You can recognize a survivor when you see one. Running a pageant campaign that can only be rivaled by a political campaign, our cover story lived the past 12 months in the local lime light. Her efforts to gain supporters can not be denied so it comes as no surprise that the unfavorable results left her and her fans alike in awe. Our last issue The Fighter featuring Erin Ferguson was a great way to end off the summer shedding the light on a man that fought against all odds in his life and career and still managed to prevail. A huge thank you goes to all of our loyal advertisers and the many first time supporters. Also never to be forgotten, a thank you to all of our contributors, readers and the Stylezine Family. THE OCTOBER ISSUE FEAT SHANAE STRACHAN
BEHIND THE SCENES We had an amazing time photographing Shanae Strachan for this issue. We called on The Royal Bahamas Defense Force to facilitate our location and their base and patrol vessels served as amazing props and backgrounds to shoot Shanae against. We called out an even more amazing style team to help us bring the looks together and we got some really incredible frames. Our main photographer, Scharad Lightbourne pulled out the ‘big guns’ in a sense to produce frame after frame with Ms. Strachan as his muse.

HUDEN JOHNSON www.hudenjphotography.com I picked up my first camera about 4 years ago. It was a point and shoot camera, with limited capabilities. I started shooting a lot of natural elements like buildings, plants and animals. I was very fascinated by what I was seeing. I then took on the task of shooting a person, which I knew would be hard knowing I have very little knowledge of photography. About a year later, I boughtI bought a professional camera and started watching a lot of tutorials and assisting other known photographers who had been in the business alot longer than I have. I worked and learned the craft as much as I could even up to today I find myself learning new skills and techniques of this field.
MEET THE PHOTO GRA HERS We had a great group of contributors in this issue. With a diverse range of photographer, learn a litle bit more about who they are; this issue’s contributing photographers.
Leo Creary www.leocreary.com As a perpetual photo student I have been deciding what style of photography I want to be strongest in. While I do not want to dedicate myself to one thing, I do want to be good in a few. I have been researching the various styles of photography. I need an adventure: something beyond landscape, and street photojournalism. I have attempted a little and fashion over the past years. In this series, I found it rather interesting. Fashion Photography is not just about taking images of pretty girls in nice dresses. It is about making clothes look good in magazines and print ads. There is a lot of detailed work that goes into fashion photography, from color coordination to hair and lighting. But I decided to be more adventurous and be more creative when I shoot trying to manipulate all of the elements present doing ideas what most people are afraid to do.

Brie Russell Horoscope Sign: SAGITTARIUS Age: 17 Citizenship: Bahamian Measurements: 34-28-40 Current Location: Abaco Defining career moment: It is very hard to choose just one, seeing how I have always viewed modeling as a ‘hobby’ of mine; however, being chosen as the spokes model for the Layers Project I would have to say was my “defining career moment.” Stars you are most compared to: I get told all the time I look like Nicole Scherzinger (the lead singer from the girl group The Pussycat Dolls) and Shay Mitchell (Emily from the hit show Pretty Little Liars); they are both beautiful women so I always take it as a huge compliment. Turn on’s: Ha, physically I like tall guys, pretty teeth and smile; I have a slight obsession with guys that have pretty eyelashes (weird, I know right?). Most importantly though I like a guy who has a good head on his shoulders, protective but not crazy jealous, intellectual, someone who’s well-mannered/respectful and it doesn’t hurt if he has a sense of humor. I like guys who can make me smile.
makeup bag, a few pageant trophies along with sashes and crowns, a workout calendar, a lot of pictures of my family/ friends and candles (I LOVE a good smelling room). Who or what is your greatest inspiration? I love feeling inspired, it somehow gives me an extra confidence boost when I need it most. My mother June Russell has forever been my greatest inspiration; she supports me in anything I set my mind to, she’s encouraging, intelligent, hardworking, independent, and beautiful from the inside out. I hope one day to be half the mother she is, and that would be enough. (I love you mommy) What’s your biggest fear? My biggest fear besides SNAKES would be disappointing my parents. They say “you were not put on this earth to please anyone but yourself ”; however I must disagree. Whatever I do I always question 1.) Is it pleasing to God…and 2.) Will it please my parents? Finish the sentence… “What really makes me smile is…” My family. No matter what I am going through they are my backbones and do everything to cheer me up or encourage me, and if that doesn’t work… they call Shawny’s (chicken snack EXTRA hot sauce). HAHA.
Turns offs: SHORT GUYS and ugly teeth!! I cannot stand an immature guy, or someone who is cocky (like, really? Do you have to brush your hair every 5 minutes?) A big turn off to me also is someone who is too serious all the time… live a little…go be adventurous. MAJOR turn off.. being too pushy.. or what do we call it now? THIRSTY. What are you listening to right now? DRAKE’S NOTHING WAS THE SAME ALBUM!! If we were to raid your room right now what would we find? HAHA, I have OCD so my room is super organized. You would find a color coordinated closet, a bookshelf that I use as my high heel holder (which is also color and style coordinated), a ton of hair products, my

Hues of burgundy and rich leathers set the tone for any outfit this season. Guys, play up the color in varsity jackets and shirts. Anchor your look with brown leather pieces; a casual boot and leather watch tie the look together, elevating what could have been a casual ensemble to seriously smart attire. Ladies, look to leather accents for fall in the form of tops and fierce ankle boots.

Seek out variegated shades of blue this season. Cast the notion of needing a dark blue jean for every outfit aside by opting for navy trousers instead. A polka-dot down vest and crisp white sneakers uplift this look. Ladies, go for structured navy jackets, statement necklaces, and heels that teeter as you walk hand-in-hand with your one and only.

Eat
Drink P a r t yhere BY: KHASHAN POITIER
With a party hop, a few delectable bites and savory sips, this column aims to dispel the myth that has plagued the young, single socialite’s calendar since the demise of culture clubs and $3 gin and orange juice-’there’s nothing to do in Nassau.’ From my weekend taste ‘n tells, I hope to introduce you to the tapped and untapped world of food and entertainment in the capitol. Like most Bahamian women, I love to eat and I like new t’ings. I also love rediscovering social scenes we have forgotten or didn’t know existed. The party scene is forever changing in Nassau, but I promise you: there are places to enjoy good music, good vibes with like-minded people. Here’s proof... Eat Here: I have passed Conch ‘N Kalik a few times in my comings and goings, but it took a few months before I was waited on by the genuine, smile-infectious waitresses. Sipping on signature drinks, like the Kalik-arita, we nibbled on the biggest onion rings your eyes have never seen. As big as the palm of my hand, the appetizer also pairs well with a raspberry mojito called, the Brown Gal. Try not to each too much or risk running out of room for Conch ‘N Kalik’s mountain high burgers. Seasoned just right, each is layered with a jumbo onion ring (the burger is so intimidating that I took my onion ring off). Ever been full, but the food is so good that you flirt with the idea of dying from gluttony? Yeah, that’s the guilty pleasure
you’ll feel eating through this meaty feast. #licklips Drink Here: Olives Mediterranean Cafe is definitely not new to the downtown area, but it was new to me... until a friend of mine suggested it for a quickie chat-it-up lunch date. Following her lead, I ordered the Mango Daiquiri. The sweet tang from the mango and tantalizing trace of gin on our tongues was all we needed to kick off the weekend. Party Here: It’s football season #fistpump and there are so many places vying for your dollars that I bet it’s hard to choose (unless you already have a bar where everybody knows your name). You’d have to visit every corner of this island to cover all the sports bars... and ain’t no one got time for that. So, here are few on my list: Twisted Lime has large flat screens to watch multiple games. With a small football crowd, you can enjoy Happy Hour drinks and a revamped appetizer menu, that include wings, artichoke spinach dip & their signature nachos.

At the tender age of two, Shanae developed a passion for beauty pageants and modeling. Her first official introduction to pageantry was when she competed in the Jr. & Teen Model Competition, 2000 which was then headed by the late Cindy Thompson. This was just the beginning for Shanae. Having garnered support and training from people like Phyllis Garraway, Deborah Greer, and Dwain Lamm of Yodephy Modeling Agency, Shanae quickly found her lane, participating in countless fashion shows and advertisement campaigns. At the age of 16, after completing high school at Kingsway Academy, Shanae took her journey on the road to New York in pursuit of her passion. Having lived in New York for almost five years, while studying Tourism and Hospitality and working at prestigious hotels such as the Ritz Carlton and Mandarin Oriental NYC, she received extensive training and first class experience in her respective fields. With her early start in pageantry 48 S T Y L E Z I N E S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 3
and modeling, Shanae decided to pursue other pageants, subsequently being crowned Theodore Elytt’s Miss Teen Bahamas, 2007. Despite any disbelievers Shanae thinks the Miss Teen Bahamas title and crown was fairly and fiercely won. “There was no controversy, just a very fierce competition. I believe I was one of the [hardest] working teen queens.” Shanae made herself indispensable to any charitable organization that promoted HIV/AIDS Awareness during her reign. One of her proud moments during this particular pageant was traveling to Lima, Peru and bringing back the Miss Teen Continents of The World crown.
Having the heart of a humanitarian, Shanae’s journey detoured her away from pageant life to volunteering in Kampala, Uganda the summer of 2010. A few days prior to her arrival, there was an Al Qaeda bombing a few miles from where she was staying. In spite of the looming dangers, Shanae followed her heart and spent that Summer caring for 27 children whose parents had either died of AIDS or were victims of war. “We had a few fundraisers in New York [and] I was able provide a very generous gift for the home where i was staying.” During her stay in Uganda, she made it a point to tell all who would listen about her country, The Bahamas.
There was no controversy, just a very fierce competition. I believe I was one of the [hardest] working teen queens.
She found pleasure in teaching them about our West Indian influenced culture. “I found that the people of FASHION . ART . ENTERTAINMENT. LIFESTYLE
the villages that I worked with gave me more respect, attention and care. I could relate to them on a level that most volunteers that traveled there could not” One drawback for her trip, she noted “it’s a shame that THE FIGHTER ft ERIN FERGUSON
most people of African descent are so afraid to visit the Motherland when they desperately need our help. If we don’t help them who will?.” Shanae tries to encourage as many people as she can to volunteer in Africa before they venture into any other continent, like South America and Asia. “Give back to your people because they need us.” Shanae’s journey of enlightenment brought her back to the native soil to embark on the title of Miss Universe Bahamas, 2013. When asked what she thought differentiated her from her competitors, her answer was simple yet extraordinary. “ My love for pageantry. I knew the history of the Miss Bahamas and Miss Universe Organizations inside and out. There were a lot of people that made the business decision to invest in my dream. There was a lot on the line, so I gave it my all.” Shanae seemed disappointed to hear other young women say that they enrolled in Miss Universe Bahamas for “the experience.” She seemed even more disillusioned to hear them say they were expecting Miss Bahamas to help them find their purpose. “You’re not supposed to come here looking for your purpose. You’re supposed to already know who you are. You are the product that you sell.” Determined to win, Shanae put together an aggressive campaign that could mimic any political campaign. Shanae, took this time also to become an agent of change, especially concerning Women’s Rights. With her platform ‘Domestic Violence Awareness’, Shanae raised over $5,000.00 for a foundation geared towards helping abused women in the Family Islands. to her, Shanae has devoted her life to advocating for Women’s Rights. As a member of NGO CSW (Committee on the Status of Women), she has helped to raise funds and awareness for abused women from Bangladesh to South Africa, and the world over. In August of this year, she helped launch ‘End the Silence Bahamas’, which is a year-long initiative to raise $100,000.00 for the Crisis Centre Family Island Outreach Program. Shanae officially started her Miss Bahamas campaign from the day Miss Bahamas 2012 was crowned. “I became a pageant warrior. I studied every international pageant.” She was so resolute on knowing all there was to know about this pageant that she studied the history of the Miss Universe Pageant. “Every day I worked [towards] my dream in some way, shape or form. Modeling in fashion and runway shows, actively participating in charity events and even attending the Miss Universe Pageant, 2012 in Las Vegas, Shanae was resolved to acquire as much experience in an effort
“We worked hard. Really hard! I’ve never seen anyone in [a] Bahamian pageant do what we did.” On September 8, 2013, the judges Shanae’s journey had an unfavorable event. After being awarded the ‘ Best Evening Gown, 1st runner up in the Swimsuit Preliminary, Miss Photogenic, Critical Beauty, Best Costume Awards, and Most Ticket and Ad Sales,’ being crowned Third Runner Up was disheartening. “There was no area in the competition that I felt I was not the best candidate. When I heard my name and was presented with my flowers, I was beyond shocked.” Understandably, Shanae was upset and some would say rightfully so. What seemed to have stunned Shanae the most, apart from her loss was that the person she thought of as her biggest competitor didn’t place.
to win Miss Universe Bahamas, 2013. “My campaign as a contestant was not just for the Miss Bahamas Competition but to make history for the Bahamas at Miss Universe too.” Shanae had an arsenal of support behind her and her campaign, the most notable being Lu Sierra, the runway coach of Miss Universe and Miss USA, for the past seven years. Equipped with a group of her close friends and family who dedicated their time and resources to her dream, Shanae began the sale of her “product”…herself. Having the responsibility of selling tickets and sending out media blasts, her family and friends constituted a well-oiled machine. Describing her beauty and fashion team as “unmatched” Shanae’s squad consisted of Tara Miller of Metamorphosis Beauty Salon, the Staff of Baha Retreat Spa, and designers David Rolle, Theodore Elyette and Juju Johnson, to name a few.

The comments that poured in on her page were remarkable. However, there were some colleagues and friends all around the world who were sorely disappointed and felt that her efforts and talents were shunned in her own home. Nevertheless, Shanae wishes Lexi Wilson, the reigning Miss Universe Bahamas all the best as she represents the country in Moscow, Russia and hopes that maybe she could put The Bahamas on the pageantry map and pave the way for the other queens to come.
