LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

THE NEO-BAHAMIAN ARTIST What I’ve seen as well is a larger support from locals who NIK BARNES CEO. FRONTLINE feel the need to lift up these PRODUCTIONS young role models instead of bring them down. That has been a major push because not only were these numbers never seen before but the support has spread across all ages.

the 3 stars was an ideal fit. They loved it and were all game for the transformation.

We have to being to support each other more because that’s the only way this new movement of “NeoBahamian” artist are going to move forward. With so many new studios and recording houses, it is proof that if one can think it they can do it and more and more young people are starting to “do it.”

Buttons Formal Wear were super helpful in helping us give the boys a new look for the teaser and the official cover which again lends to the fact of local businesses support of young, hip artists.

THERE IS TALENT here in in this small archipelago. Over the last 4 years, there has been a tsunami like surge of young, fresh and hip talent that span across a wide area of art genres. Visual, recording, literary, per formance and even culinary arts have been blanketed with the new age Bahamian artist. Personally, I’ve had to opportunity to influence many of these artists myself, from Sammi Starr, 21, Tada, Sketch, CJ Priest, Be and many more just to name a few.

Just like our last issue which featured Leah Eneas, this issue hopes to give you a more personal look at 3 of the hottest male musicians in the biz. Sammi Starr, CJ Priest and Sketch have all made major waves around these 700 island and cays. Using their celebrity status, we hoped to make this issue’s theme fun and young again.

I did’nt have to say much, once ScharadL got the concept, he ran with the idea completely and has shown that this issue may be the most creative to date.

Through social networks like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and chat clients, these artists are able to get themselves out there in numbers as well as be accessible to fans and supporters alike. Stylezine has taken on this same approach and I trust that you will enjoy this issue; The Heart-Throbs. I spent all my minutes texting this letter to my editor so Ive got to get a phone card. Enjoy! What I loved about the ar7cle was that she really shed light on how females today see themselves. The TV and other types of media create such a facade that some of our women get lost in whats real and whats not. Keep up the good work. Keith Rolle, BAH PUSH THE ENVELOPE

TURNTABLE COFFEE

This month's gadget section is a bit different cause the focus is on a furniture piece. @ first sight this piece had to go straight on my dĂŠcor list. This modern piece could accent any creative space and fits the interior design needs of any urban or metropolitan theme. The way cool and trendy coffee table is made of a clear pine construction. All of the legs are made from brushed metal and have a poly resin coating with a glass table top to add a stylish art deco feel. Imaging of the turntables and Dj mixer on the top surface is from a photo transfer. I must conclude it's a must have for a lounge, studio or a Club. The retail pricing is listed as $895.00 US and not too pricey for those ballin' on a budget. Check it out on www.bughouse.com stylezinemagazine.com :: October 2009

JULIEN THOMPSON

“It doesn't cost a thing to think BIG” was a quote Julien heard a lot from his father growing up. It was sentiments like this that inspired Julien to become the person and singer/songwriter that he has developed into. He established early on a belief that he could become anything he set his mind to if he worked hard to accomplish it. Julien was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, the small island paradise in the Atlantic Ocean. Growing up in the Bahamas offered Julien exposure to both a cosmopolitan way of life combined with what is known as traditional island living. The degree of Julien’s ambition to become a musician, however, was not always fully understood. As the son of a policeman and schoolteacher it was often difficult for anyone, even his parents, to understand his compulsion to do music. “Every time you walked past or heard Julien in the distance he was singing,” his mother says. “I couldn’t understand it, Julien absolutely HAS to sing!” By the age of 11, Julien was actually selling his own lunch to buy CDs. His favorite artists included Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, Joe, Bob Marley, and Ronnie Butler. Not only did he listen to these musicians, he dissected their lyrics and started fashioning his own writing style. At 12, Julien joined a singing group at his church, and so began his development as an artist. To read more about Julien, click on the artist spotlight page on the main website.

ALBUM RATES If you haven't herd of Courtney John as yet, get familiar people. He hails from the land of jamaica. I must say he's not the run of the mill reggae artist. He stands out amidst the mediocre gumbo of tradition yet still remains indigenous. His sound is sonic a hybrid of Motown meets Doo Wop meets Rocksteady. Vocally it reminds me of Curtis Mayfield and Eddie Kendricks but with a reggae accent like Slim Smith it's even similar to some of the earlier Bob Marley and The Wailer Joints. To date " Made In Jamaica " is his 3rd LP and in my opinion his best work thus far. The lead single is " Lucky Man " and you should probably watch the vid it was cleverly shot and coincides with the music. My fav song on this disc is a remake of the Rose Royce classic " I Want To Get Next To You " It's a clever remake with a skank to it that sets it apart from the original. All in all this is a breath of fresh air for the reggae community @ this point in time and his nostalgic sound gets all my kuddos. Check it out ! wwww.courtneyjohn.com

FALL TRENDS

Boyfriend Blazer The Boyfriend Blazer: Nothing says chic like taking your boyfriend’s clothes and making them your own. The boyfriend blazer takes that concept and uses to add instant sophistication to any look. Throw it on over a romantic ruffle skirt (we love the flirty but structured look this gives) or wear with that classic white shirt and favourite jeans for a smart casual feel.

The White Shirt:

Classic and ever trendy, the white shirt and all variations of it can be found in every fall issue. The versatility and timelessness of the white shirt allows it to be paired with any trend no matter the season. You can opt for a simple button down blouse (Banana Republic has great options) with jeans for a relaxed look or a more extravagant blouse paired with lace or leather for an evening look.

Hot Pink:

Of all the 80’s inspired colours that paraded the runways earlier this year, hot pink was chosen to represent fall. We know what you’re thinking, how can HOT PINK possibly be fall colour right? Well we couldn’t be happier that everyone got tired of using purple, burgundy, and burnt orange for fall and decided to opt for a bolder choice. The best way to wear hot pink for fall is by pairing with something grey. Grey is the new black for fall and is the per fect way to keep your outfit grounded. And the best part is there are so many shades of grey to choose that you will never get bored.

TOP 10 MUST HAVES (from page 1) Leather & Studs: Remember when the leather and stud combo were worn only by the Goth kids and biker dudes? Well now we can join in the fun too. Leather and studs are the perfect match for any outfit. You can wear a leather dress with leggings and studded shoes or a studded leather jacket with a white tee and denim skirt. We don’t care how you pair, just wear it!

FALL TRENDS

STYLES TO WATCH

Metallics: No longer reserved for nightlife only, metallics can now be wor n (in moderation of course) during the day. We’re not suggesting that you wear your gold lamé dress to lunch with mom, but you can pair it with your new boyfriend blazer and cute pair of booties and go shopping with the girls.

Bib Necklaces: Keeping with the bold necklace trend, the new fall accessory is the bib necklace. The name is pretty selfexplanatory and is the ideal item to complete a simple outfit. No need to search for extra jewels, remember less is more when it comes to bib necklaces. Don’t want to break the bank splurging on trendy designer baubles? You can find very affordable and equally beautiful necklaces at Forever 21.

Over-the-Knee Boots: Not exactly the most practical accessory for the tropical C E R T I F I E D islands, but hey fashion over function remember? Besides, there’s always Junkanoo (if you can get a VIP seat and save yourself the walk). The great thing about these boots is that they totally dress up your outfit without much work. Going casual - wear them over jeans. Going glam – wear them with a micro mini skirt.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So this concludes our romp through fall fashion wonderland. This season offers something for everyone, from the ultra-chic and feminine to the badass biker babe, we all have something to satisfy our fashion needs. One thing we’ve realized though is that fashion is more than just what’s current and style is more than just what you wear. Having said that, stay tuned for MODA, etc. – coming soon… -end- (as in the article is over)

THE XJ900 HORROR

KIDS EDITION Jamal Smith James McKinney

Okay when myself, James and ScharadL came up with the back-to-school concept for KICKS I thought to myself great this should be a piece of cake or duff (for my Bahamian p e o p l e . ) I had joyful flashbacks of buying the small black safari backpack and airbrushing my nickname on them (Dang! Stef is old!) I remember going to G.R. Sweeting's for Clarks or other stores for Travel Fox, Gino D’s, Buffalino, Simba or whatever school shoes were “carrying on”. All these great memories had me very nostalgic then a bit of emotional pain shadowed my soul. The gloom immediately

door “bucking my toe” twice in the process. I belted out to the top of my lungs “Mummy you get my tings?”

My L.A. gears had made me so cool; the neon green and bright white color gleaming brighter than the smile of the ladies trying to braid the t o u r i s t ’ s h a i r . The checkerboard laces intricately intertwined and the signature license plate tag that slapped along your shoe. I was fresh! I still shake at the thought of this memory but to prevent any shame or disgrace for your future children I would face my fear. I was a young lad and my L.A. gears, which I spent all of my packing boy money had started flapping from the sole (NB: Yes, I was the first yellow B a h a m i a n p a c k i n g b o y ) . What a tragedy! My “foot trophies” were ruined, t r a s h e d a n d d e s t r o y e d . Devastated, I decided to approach my mother because my father was very “economical.” My whole re a s o n i n g w o u l d b e t h a t because my mother knew how hard I worked to purchase those shoes she would take pity on me and work out a new pair for me. I came upon my mother’s presence and immediately told her about my heartache and school had just started a week ago so the fresh back to school feeling was in full effect. My mother gracefully touched my head like only a mother could look me in my yes and assured me that she would handle the situation. I was ecstatic could not wait to get back my “mantle of cool”. PhysEd was in two days so I could “buss” my new shoes again. The next day the car pulled up and I scurried out the

She nodded and told me to check the trunk. I popped the trunk and all I could see where a bunch of plastic grocery b a g s . Bewildered and dumbfounded I asked again. Perturbed, she handed me one of the grocery bags. Folks nothing good can every come out of the sneaker combination of kicks and bags from the food store. I stuck my hand in the bag and retrieved the ugliest looking sneakers I have ever seen. It was certain that my friends would tease me. The smell was a mixture of Alpo dog food and Pine-Sol disinfectant. Across the side of the tennis written in a big and bold manner was XJ900! Oh the horror! What in the world were XJ900s? Not Nike, Adidas, Converse or even Pumas but XJ900s! I would have even settled for Kangaroos at that point. Needless to say I bent down on my knees and thanked God for crazy glue and the show “MacGyver.” I patched those L.A. Gears up like a government road and snuck those with me to school on P.E. days because my mother expected me to leave the house in those XJ900s. The moral of this story however is parents and future parents don’t do this to your kids. Just reminisce how you are/were about your kicks and sneaking your brothers, cousins and uncle’s kicks to look fly and imitate them.

SPOTLIGHT Bringing back that same late 80's look and feel that made the brand so popular when they originally launched in 1985 by the Jack Schwartz Shoe Company. From '85 to the early 90's BK's rose to the highest level in the athletic footwear industry. They catered specifically to the urban hip hop set, with endorsements by MC Hammer, resisting endorsement by professional athletes until signing Derek Coleman of the New Jersey Nets to endorse their new Dymacel technology. Rumor also has it that the sneaker was popular in California with the Crips gang as BK stood for "Blood Killer". Now relaunching with models replicating that same look and feel from their heyday. Any pair of these will make you stand out in a crowd. And if they remain true to their old ways, prices won't be astronomical. Funny, just had a flashback moment, remembering how cheap and cool BK's were and my mum STILL refused to buy them for me. What brand of sneaker was I blessed with? Well I was maybe one level up from Smitty and the food s t o r e s n e a k e r. . . b u t n o t much. I was forced to wear what appeared to be a Nike and a Reebok sneaker wrapped in a Deathlock struggle for life called...JOX. Oh the pain! Children today are so lucky!

SS: Pre Production set up, Pro Tools, MacBook Pro 17", iPod touch, creative recs, Gucci shoes, flat screen TV, a few diamonds, money, fan, home theatre system, and of course Gucci cologne NB: Have you ever been dumped and why? SS: Yes, I had nothing going for me then, so I was told, she went with the guy that she thought was cuter, imagine that? Where you at now? LMAO!! NB: Oh snap! Cocky…but what do YOU bring to the table in a relationship sir? 1. Billionaire Boys Budget! Everyone’s ultimate goal is to be “stanky” rich, but what steps have you taken to get there? Creating a fixed savings account can help you best save your money and manage your future at the same time. Consider $50 from your weekly salary. At the end of a year, you would have saved $2,400 that can be invested in an asset to produce a higher return on your money. 2. I need some me time. Single, married or dating, it’s always best to take some time out for yourself. Most men fear individuality because they won’t ideally fit in to society. Taking time out to be alone allows you soul search and appreciate yourself. I think this is the only way some men can empathetically learn to appreciate others. 3. Square Boy. Being “square” in some societies suggest that a person is very repetitious and lacks spontaneity. Add some excitement to your life; grab a friend and go parasailing, swim with sharks or just do anything outside of the routine of your life. You’ll discover that there are more things that you like that you thought you did! 4. Stop lotioning dudes! This movement has been around for ages and the guys responsible for this action are only seen as “spineless douches”. It’s good that you can “bigup” your boy for doing something good. But it’s those common, extreme cases of calling him “da boss” and publicly admonishing that he’s superior to you… that’s just weird to me. 5. Effortless Effect. Any guy that looks like he spent an hour getting dress, risk the chance of looking like a looser! Stick to your own style, but learn to tailor it for each event. Before leaving the house, make sure you look like YOU, and not Kanye West or Zac Efron!

D E I F I T R CE D’ANGELO CHARLTON PRESENTS

stylezinemagazine.com :: October 2009

DC: So do you feel any pressure being the first female featured for Phresh? Or is it no big deal for you? ND: No pressure. I wouldn't say that it's no big deal though. I am honoured, flattered, excited and the list goes on...but pressure isn't on the list. DC: Before we get too far.... Does the phrase "Stop Lotionin’ these gals" sound familiar? ND: LOL yes it is all too familiar. It seems to be catching on! DC: It’s practically a movement. Just had to clarify for those who will think we are doing just that right now. ND: [laughs] DC: Speaking of movements, you are host of the popular growing show; Talk 242 on JCN. Did you always want to be a talk show host?

on a STYLEZINE teaser cover. It's a little island, you see the same people ALL the time and I am new in the mix...I'm sure it will wear off shortly. DC: Maybe, Maybe not. I know that whole 'new girl' in town thing is bringing you lots of attention. Having fun? ND: Ummm...I don't think I get as much attention as you think I'm getting. But so far so good...I'm having lots of fun DC: Either you're being modest or I need to hit the cell right quick and ask certain people what’s up. ND: Be sure to let me know what 'certain people' say

DC: It's either dreads or epic failure?! ND: No, it’s definitely not a failure. You just have to be somewhat good looking, have a great sense of humour, be passionate about something and be humble!! Dreads might add to all that.. [laughs], but they are definitely

“It's a little island, you see the same people ALL the time and I am new in the mix...I'm sure it will wear off shortly.”

ND: Well at first I went to JCN looking for a PR position and as luck would have it, I was asked about the opportunity of doing a talk show. I jumped at the chance because it was a great outlet for me to “join” the movement.

DC: Listen to t h i s observation. If she's bright, has good hair or both, wears Rasta paraphernalia (pins, bracelets, belts etc),

DC: In 4 months, you’re out stunting females that never left the country.

ND: [laughs] I know where this is going

ND: [laughs] I guess because I'm the "new girl" in town? I've been gone for so long and then boom suddenly here I am on TV out in the club from time to time, passing people on the road even

dated two 'dread heads', a huge Bob Marley fan and went to Queen’s College. So I guess what I can say it sounds about right.

DC: Loves Bob Marley (or any reggae artist with locks), has or dates someone with dreadlocks (or would like to), she's from Q.C. ND: [laughs] WELL...I would love to disagree because I hate the whole stereotype deal. BUT, I have

not a must DC: What if he's a notorious lover boy but is willing to change just for you? ND: ha ha ha...Right!!! I don't fall those lines. I don’t buy dreams. DC: Switching lanes right quick. I hear you're leading the effort to bring the prettiest faces in your place of employment since another 'jewel' of a media house

has that title. Well at least that is what someone told me. ND: [laughs] L-O-L!!! I have no idea what you're talking about. I would like to know who told you so I can give them a call. I mean If I'm gonna be leading any kind of effort to do anything...I'd like to be prepared. DC: Dinner and movie or a home cooked meal with a DVD cuddled up on the sofa? ND: Can I choose both options?? Believe it or not I like to cook, love cuddling and watching a movie…so I'll have to go with that option. But going to dinner and the movies is fun to…[thinks] maybe if we alternate weekends?! DC: Some courageous young man wants to approach you after reading this. He doesn’t have dreadlocks, what’s his best approach? ND: Just to re-iterate...you don't have to have dreadlocks!! [laughs] but anyway, this is a difficult question to answer. See the

problem with Nassau is that men will hit on a woman no matter what she looks like or who she is. So when a woman is in the club, i n t h e m a l l or p re t t y m u c h anywhere, they get bombarded with guys trying their luck so to speak. So even if you have the 'per fect' approach, if you're attractive, successful or whatever, it probably won't get through to

“See the prob with Nassau is that men will hit on a woman no matter what she looks like or who she is.” me. All I can say is good luck! DC: I'm coming in Waterloo with a dozen roses on bended knees in the middle of Champion Bubbler! ND: [laughs] I don't know what I would do! DC: You better at least take my roses and help me up off my knees…Wild seed flowers ain't cheap! ND: I could do that for you. DC: This interview is over. I spent all my money on flowers so I have to hop the wall and sneak in. ND: Yikes!

Anything dominated with skullsDid you not get the memo? The Shop Boyz flopped terribly, the Skull and Bones society went into hiding when Barack Obama became president and oh yeah....Ozzy Osbourne called, he asked that you return everything he loaned you.

Some things should be made official, others should be made extinct. What’s right in and what should be left out! •

Media case- Are so necessary! Trying to fit money, iPhone/Blackberry/Smart phone and other items into slim pockets are proving quite cumbersome these days. LRG ®, Bape® and BBC® have put their spin on a modern day fanny pack for the Phresh ones that conveniently attaches to the belt loop.

Bead bracelet- Bling is dead and the David Yurman bracelet is beyond played out. The malachite bead bracelet is a nice alternative that works well from the two piece suit to the t- shirt and jeans. Don’t believe me? It’s been cosigned by your favourite celebs from Bill Clinton to Russell Simmons. NICE!!!

Patterned Belts- Whether your shirt and pants matches or clashes, a pattern belt always bring a welcomed layer of complexity. The only rule is, the belt of choice must complement the shoes. Otherwise it’s an epic failure!

Camouflage pants- They are simply just PHRESH! Whether paired with a t-shirt, a fitted and a crisp pair of kicks or cleaned up nicely with a contrasting polo or button up and boat shoes, these were made for the man on the go that doesn’t like to bother much. Extra points because they don’t necessarily require ironing. Unless you serve in the armed forces, stray away from using the replica found at your local outdoor sporting goods shop.

Four In Hand Knot:

Windsor Knot

MAN UP! Even grass grows baby. Plants become trees, young boys become grown men! Below are different necktie knots to aide you when it’s time to get suited ‘n booted:

The windsor knot is a wide triangular knot that is usually worn for formal occasions, this type of knot should be worn with wide spread collar shirts. 1. Begin with the wide end on your right and extending real low leaving the narrow end quite short. (Pictures are mirror images, in other words images are what you would see if you were looking in a mirror.)

(Most popular type of knot and easiest to learn, probably over 80% of tie wearers knot their ties with this. The knot is long and straight but slightly lopsided).

2. Bring the wide end of the tie over the narrow (right side to left side). 3. Bring the wide end up through the middle of the loop and to the left (left side to left side).

1. Put your collar up, and place the

inches (depending on your height and neck size) of the narrow end. For regular sized ties leave much less

6. Bring the wide end around the front (left side to right side).

(about 2 inches). Place the wide end of your tie over the narrow end.

end of the tie. 4. Pull the wide end of the tie, and wrap it around the right side of the tie near your collar. Make sure that there is

9. Remove your finger and tighten the knot

a loop where the knot will be. Pull the narrow end through the loop.

10. Hold the narrow end and slide the knot up to the collar.

5. Tighten the tie knot by pulling on the narrow and the wide end of the necktie at the same tie. Put your collar down and align the tie knot so it sits at the center of your collar. The Four in Hand knot is especially well suited for shirts with a narrow collar spread, and a more pointy collar. stylezinemagazine.com :: October 2009
