The setting: a war waged on a battlefield during 100 plus degree weather. There are casualties. Seeing those closest to you torn from your side and fatigued by hunger and thirst, vision is one of the first things lost after carrying 50-pound armor for days.

Despite the will to press on, your handicap keeps you doing nothing more than shooting into the abyss with the sole hope of hitting a target. You need a moment to stop, close your eyes and regroup. In that moment, breathing slows. The sound of gunfire and explosions fade, you hear your own heartbeat.

Your eye open and where there was haze there is now clarity. The iris focuses and the future is clear.

TEXT ME!

The inspiration for this issue comes from the evergrowing pop culture forged in our community for the past 10 years ushered in by two revolutionaries. I gave Scharad Lightbourne and Farreno Ferguson the concept, ‘Legends of the Fall’, and they ran with it as displayed on the cover shot by Donald Knowles. I’d like to send a special thanks to the flight attendants Erinn and De’Anna, , and the STYLEZINE team for pushing for perfection.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE I have never been more proud of my Bahamian artists. We are truly the next generation to break grounds in the Bahamian industry.

Not only are we raising the bar and setting standards, we are laying the foundation for others to come up.

People like TaDa, have worked so hard to take things to another level and shown that it not only takes talent, but heart and passion as well. Scharad and Farreno, need not say no more, your work speaks for itself.

Its evident by the amount of young upcoming photographers that you guys are doing something right!

Margaret Glynatsis, BAH VISUAL VOCABULARY Everywhere you go in this town we call Nassau, you see ladies rockin' the same clothes. What ever happened to individual style? When did the boundary between fashion & style become blurred, so much in fact that now only 'fashion' dictates what's stylish & individual style is not recognized as 'fashion'? In place of style we have slowly

started to honor Fashion Merchandise. What looks good and works for her, may not look good and work for you.

Style on the other hand, doesn't need a rack, it thrives on individuality, courage & creativity. This is what people really go for when they aspire to be fashionable, they're showing they aren't just part of an assembly line, it's all about making an outfit work for them.

Wardrobe should be our visual vocabulary, how we speak to others before we even speak.

So, what does it say about you, when you look like everyone else? You know, as Bahamian women we are blessed with curves, some more than most.

So, those fashionable skinny jeans might not work for your

bahama mama butt, or that designer halter top might make those bahama boobies look more like cannon balls in a sling. So, the next time you're out shopping truly think about your individuality, what works for you and what you can make work, instead of letting fashion & merchandising dictate what y o u s h o u l d w e a r. . . J u s t something to think about.

Tara Genea, BAH SUN SAND AND SEA As a fashion, art, and entertainment enthusiast, I almost came to a point of despair in the local Bahamian market and its appeal and development. However, 2008 was a phenomenal year for Bahamian Entertainment, Art and Fashion and truly proved me wrong. I now have faith in

Iʼm really proud of the talent here and in 2008 artists really took advantage of every opportunity to show it and I know this is just a sneak peak of whatʼs to come.

These are the days when you nod your head and recognize that beat by Frontline/Buffboo or Believe, the lyricist behind the mic is Wolf, and the teenage heartthrob is Sammie Starr. You know the voice of your in-your-face MC So$a, vocals by Be and Tada, and that signature ʻArtovationʼ is Diplight Media. No imitations of American artists and remakes that only sound worse or any “wanna-beʼs” of the sort…this is the real deal here. To all the artists and enthusiasts that are despaired or persistent, weʼre finally embracing the true quality and efforts of our own… shame on you if you didnʼt notice itʼs high time we showed our support. Finally, there is hope for our generation… thereʼs more to us than sun, sand and sea.

Camille Kenny, BAH EARN RESPECT Earning respect starts with selfrespect. Here are some of the keys to keeping the balance.

Respect Yourself Thereʼs no greater indicator of insecurity than self-disrespect.

We all know about self-respect but self-disrespect is not staying on top of your game.

Itʼs the lack of studying oneʼs craft, failure to research,

neglecting to rehearse and settling for mediocrity. Know your worth and appreciate it.

Donʼt put out to get in.

People use people. Thatʼs just the way it is. The people who get used more are those who are so quick to give something up in order to fit into a particular circle. The problem is, however, once youʼve put out thereʼs no guarantee of getting in. No one wants someone or something associated with them thatʼs common, easily accessible, cheap. Common doesnʼt equal respect.

Stop Brown Nosing I really wanted to say something else here but this is a family friendly magazine – so…I repeat, ʻStop brown nosing!ʼ Granted just about everyone has that little bit of ego that needs to be stroked, thereʼs absolutely no reason to have your head shoved so far up the nebulous crack of someoneʼs posterior that people canʼt trust you.They give compliments not because theyʼre sincere, but because theyʼre expecting something out of the deal.

People see straight through a fake. You may get ahead temporarily but stay there, you wonʼt.

Tell it like it is This is no set up people.

Really. When are we going to get to the point where we just say ʻthe hell with it!ʼ When are we going to just be honest with our ʻfriends ʼ , ʻassociates ʼ and ʻcolleaguesʼ and just tell it like it is? ʻThat hair color doesnʼt suit you, try another oneʼ, ʻthat photo isnʼt your best workʼ Or even the way producer Bigg E (Ian Cleare) asked me straight up, ʻWhy your voice sound like that in the songʼ? That was his polite way of saying he thought the vocals could use more work. If someone values your

opinion, itʼs always better to tell it like it is. That one simple concept earns you respect and believe it or not trust.

Do you Itʼs okay to look at others for inspiration but in 2009, do you.

While it takes a while to refine all those layers of sheer brilliance, itʼs much easier to refine a natural diamond than it is to chemically create one which by the way is worth much less.

Bodine Johnson, BAH MALE STYLES RISING Iʼm growing weary of seeing dudes walking around, dressed the same as the next. Where is the individuality?! A while back, it seemed as though every Bahamian male wore the typical “Tommy” or “Polo” button down, khakis and “boat shoes”; that basically became a “Saturday outing” staple. I assume guys used this as a way to fit into our “macho d o m i n a t i n g ” s o c i e t y, f a s h i o n a b l y. A

revolution of male individual style and self-expression has arisen. Nowadays, itʼs actually cool for guys to change up their personal styles more than before. The key to it however is CONFIDENCE! There is a fine line between seeing a guy (the individual) first, with nice clothes on and seeing nice clothes on “whatʼs-his-face”.

GET INTO IT— get creative; mix patters, colors and textures. Put on some sneakers with a suit, plaid shirt with striped pants, or even high-top sneakers with shorts.

For heavenʼs sake, get rid that lame “Saturday-outing” uniform! “Style fills the gap between how you see yourself and how you want other people to see you” – Mike Piscitelli, Menʼs fashion designer. Now think about that! Linkages!

Jamal Smith, aka 29 year old, Smitty from The Country is not your average sneaker head.

Being an 80ʼs baby I was raised in the Bahamas during a time when it was all about having the latest pair of Jordanʼs. Jordanʼs were like the biggest thing for youngsters, the only problem was there was not really much variety.

You had to wait until it was time for the new ones to drop. Either take a trip all the way to Miami or spend hundreds at the Sports Center or Hoffers and Sons.

After gaining vast knowledge about sneakers from research online, conversing with friends who had similar interests and keeping in touch with former employees at Nike, I found joy in “putting on“ people to what was hot. I decided on doing a little bit of business myself and imported sneakers to the Bahamas. This was still not enough to fulfill my passion until I met magazine cocreator of Stylezine ScharadL who encouraged me to expand to a larger audience so here I am putting on my KICKS.

Jordan's from his mom and he was "blessed" with and I quote "An ugly pair of no-name Converse". From there Tony went head on into what could be described today as a healthy obsession with having Fresh kicks. Asked about his ongoing love-affair wiht sneakers Tony said " I look at my sneakers like I look at women, who wants to have the girl everbody else has or had? I feel the same way about my sneakers." It's that attitude that drives him to hunt releltlessly for sneakers the averavge man may never find or even may refuse to wear. His hunger for sneakers makes him a true SneakerMonster.

KICKS are the guide to lead the sneaker joneser through the maze of ordinary, plain and lukewarm sneakers into the treasure chest of Hot, Live and out of this world tennis. Yea people in other words sneaker crack for the shoe addicts.

Even as a toddler, Tony, 28, refused to go outside unless he had a pair of shoes on, fussing and crying until someone put his socks and shoes on him to make him feel complete. Tony's, obsession with dope kicks however, officially kicked off in 1992, the year his little brother received a pair of

With Kanyeʼs increasing presence in the game and ever lasting groundbreaking moves in the fashion industry I can almost bet a conch snack that this shoe will evolve into some serious eyecandy.

SUPRA Sneaky Steve: Though there are tons of high-top white and blue sneakers out there, wear these and you're instantly "The Man". A Norwegian brand, Sneaky Steve is hard to locate outside of Europe. Good Luck finding a pair...

Kanye West x Louis Vuitton: In a word...Sick. Kanye has teamed with the legendary brand to create a sneaker designed and inspired by Kanye himself. It is good to see he takes the same approach to sneaker design as he does to his music. Apart from a few shots of him wearing them in public and Kanye's remarks about the collabo, any other info on these bad-boys is strictly hush hush.

Supras originally “beamed out of space” as a “skateboarder” or “backpacker” shoe. A wide audience is surprisingly embracing usually huge conflicts with the traditional bad-boy gangster image of Bahamian youth the shoes. Following the same path as the ever-popular “Air Force Ones” these shoes are being predicted to replace them from the east, west, over-the-hill and everything in between. Sightings of the alien shoe have been at local clubs such as “Waterloo”, “Plush”, “Uptown”, and “Fluid”. The style of the shoe is a fusion of a r t i s t i c fl a i r, skateboarding comfort and now a bit more hood swagger (Yes the most overused cliché but it serves the purpose of d e fi n i t i o n ) .

Popularity of the shoe has b e e n attributed to r a p superstar “ L i l Wayne”, Jay-z etc.

This shoe is also a favorite of yours truly who has a few on ice for that hype event.

ATO Matsumoto ATO Matsumoto. Next level would serve as an understatement to describe this apparatus of the foot (shoe for the slow people). Not your pre-paid phone card type of shoe, this is for the post-paid blackberry elite shoe junkies. At prices currently around $600 USD this shoe to a fly guy is likened to the latest Gucci or Louis Vutton bag for women. Very popular in the Asian market and making its way in the U.S. these sneakers were also made popular by music artist Kanye West in his music video “Stronger”. The shoe seems to be a take from the classic air force one highʼs with the patented leather (flow shine) Jordan material. The straps and tongue have been exaggerated, which seems to be the focal point of the shoe that sets them apart from the crowd. With the horizons of the younger generation of Bahamians being broadened this shoe might become infectious in the “mono-shoe” Air Jordan capital of the world known as the Bahamas.

I’ve been at photography for close to 8 years now, got into it during my last years in high school .

With such longevity in the creative arts where do you still find motivation to continue to evolve? What's your staying power?

FDOT How long have you been doing photography?

Well def I believe in what I do, and know that I have what it takes to make things happen. Mama always said with God all things are possible, and that’s what drives me day to day.

Your online video magazine E:Life 242 just went into hard copy.

What's the origin behind the name and the concept?

FDOT >

The origin of the name eLIFE was kind of a play on the latest CD by favorite band Mint Condition … so I grabbed it and put 242 on it to represent the ENTERTAINMENT LIFE of the 242. Everything these days is entering the digital age, so I’m capitalizing on that.

What’s t h e experience like working under a future cacique award winner Donald Knowles?

Working under Donald has been fun from the first day we met when I started at The Nassau Guardian. He always showed me he was prepared to show me all he knew, and ever since we been down. He is def a great mentor and friend.

What was the name of the very first model that you ever shot?

My first solo shoot was with the lovely Sherice Major who has no blossomed into one of Nassau’s Top Models. I remember

There has been countless comparisons between ScharadL and yourself from inception. What makes your work different from Scharad?

I make my work different. Basically who am I determines my work, so me and Scharad’s work may be similar but the laws of nature will have it where it is never the same.

So straight up who’s better you or ScharadL? Some days I am, Some days he is and some days the other photographers are. Visual arts are hard to place a best title on it, but we both doing it big and I think the general public is recognizing that.

What will iKonz be in 2015?

Competition !!! I mean I’m constantly evolving my thought process and workflow, so unless people out there plan on keeping up with my every thought I HAVE NO COMPETITION, except MYSELF !!!

Are there any other Bahamian artist you would like to collaborate with?

People out there have been calling me the Industry facilitator, which means there is not much I won’t help or collaborate on. So I am willing to collab with all once the project is right and its m u t u a l l y beneficial.

iKonzMedia will be the company to watch, and by 2015 we hope to own the industry with our different offerings whether it be Videos, Magazines or Audio.

What's next for FDOT? FDOT is a brand that I have developed and hope to see turn into a household name that becomes synonymous with good work.

I want to keep doing what I do and not look back and mind the noise in the market.

If you could be doing anything besides photography right now what would it be?

Chilling !!! I’m a workaholic so when I get a chance to break, I BREAK HARD. I chill, hang out and just have fun, anyone who has been around me on a “chill session” knows how I go .

you plan o n transferring y o u r knowledge and experience onto young up and coming artist? Do you have a protégé?

I have been transferring knowledge ever since I started this, I have to because people like Donald & David Knowles, Pat Hanna, Tim Aylen, Peter Ramsay and Derek Smith did the same for me, so I assist anyone with questions.

I am def a sociable guy, I like meeting people and learning about them.

As an artist its good to know how other people see the world, because it helps you to know how to structure a n y particular project to really grab t h e attention of the gen.

Public. At the moment there is no Official Mrs. FDOT but the clouds are clearing and there is a light beaming through LOL !!

Who is the most memorable model that you have ever shot? What was the experience like?

After shooting so many it’s hard to say who was the most memorable, but I have had fun with all of them and most of them turn into good friends. But all my Bahamian models were great to work with and the international models I have the opp to shoot

were all a blast and stay in contact with me via the web or phone.

As a forerunner in Artovation what do you feel is holding Bahamians back from that promised land of success?

WORK ETHIC & MIND SET are the biggest killers of the Bahamian Dream.. I feel we sometimes want things handed to us instantly. We want to ‘Be like Mike’ but not ever get drafted and work our way to the top of the league.

So I feel once we can show the Bahamian people that we have worked h a r d a n d have a

Like I said Mint Condition is my favorite band, so I got every album from them on there, in addition to Anthony Hamilton. Still do my TOP 40, so the new Jeezy album, the new T. I. album and a lot others are on there, but I am fan of soul music, so I keep those in heavy rotation.

Who’s album will sell more Jay-z Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's The Carter 4?

That’s a toss up … but I would more than likely buy the BluePrint 3, Jay-Z’s music has more soul infusion which is more up my stream.

If you were on an episode of Room Raiders, what would we find in your room?

My Apple MacBook Pro, a host of hard drives, a television and bed. I also have probably the best collection of KING Magazines on the Island.

How do you like your women, chopped or screwed?

The screwed thing sounds more appropriate, but I am a fan of beautiful women. All it takes is a great smile and a personality that matches to reel me in !!

What fast food franchise has made the most money off of you?

FDOT >

Not crazy on the fast food, but between KFC and Bamboo Shack they probably can write me a check for some stock dividends after the amount of money I throw down in there establishments.

SCHARADL How is ScharadL different from the man in the mirror 2 years ago?

Well I think I have more of an appreciation for life and the family and friends that I’m blessed with. I love life in general, good people and I take nothing for granted, nothing! I’ve flushed out the bad habits and evil people. I don’t waste time with insignificant things anymore. I’ve grown.

I love anything where I can be creative really, I’ve been artistic all my life, diving into different art genres over the past years but I love photography the most right now because it allows me to completely turn a blank canvas into art. I love all those art forms you mentioned but photography is the girl I want to be with the most right now.

When did you know it was time to leave your job at The Counsellors to work on your own?

There have been countless comparisons of your photography style to FDOT. What make you different and or similar to him?

What drives ScharadL?

I think we both love what we do and put time and effort into it, Its not about the girl in the bikini or how many hits we get online, its about the moment and brining this moment to the people, almost like we are disciples trying to bring food to those that want to be fed. If I had any thing that differentiates, I’d say personality. Someone told me that they made an analogy about “F” and me. they said, he is like P.Diddy and I’m like Jay-Z, both styles equally as big but definitely different in demeanor. I think that sums it up.

I think if I could say anything about what drives me, I’d say me. I want to learn and accomplish so much while I can. I never want to stop doing what I do. I think my drive is like well oiled machinery. It keeps working. What pushes that are my influences, amazing friends, loving and supportive parents and an overflow of blessings. My grandmother, I love that woman so much, her passing in this world has made me want to prove so much more to myself. That’s powerful to say but if I believe it, I definitely can do it.

Your photo shoots use to be over run by love and support from your Diplight Family.

As of recently what caused the disappearance of your supporting cast?

Over run is an interesting word. You make it sound like they were rats or something. That wasn’t the case. Well at first, it was good, I was new at this (photography) and I asked for help from partners and their close associates. It was great that we were helping one another out. My passion and discipline grew for the art itself and I think for others, it may have gone in a different direction.

Personality, schedules and interests grew as well. I think I realized that it wasn’t necessary anymore.

Being in a professional environment, I understood that you have people for hair, m a k e u p , w a r d r o b e , lighting, art direction but I was not on that level, so with those factors among others, things got downsized so that I could focus more.

It really made a difference but the love and support aspects never changed, just the capacity that it was displayed. You can’t forget where you came from or the people that helped you to get there.

You put on the Kinesis art show and had rave reviews. What was the reason that you put on a full sensory art show? How do you follow up a show that got you such critical acclaim?

I’d always wanted to do an art show but I needed a good reason to. After countless brainstorming sessions with family and close friends, I just decided that it was time to.

From November of 2007, I’d been planning and planning, conceptualizing and creatively coming up with something Nassau had never seen before. My upbringing and discipline for the arts made it so stimulating in concept that I

How do I follow up? I’ve got some projects in my head circulating around some others.

There is no doubt that my spokesperson Andre Chapelle was the most memorable. I had an out of body experience on the shoot, never before had I felt so in sync with the subject. I felt every shutter click, every breath of air that was made in the studio that day. The image that was used to promote Kinesis is one of those I think could not be bought. It is the BEST photography I’ve EVER done. I am NEVER going to have that experience ever again because something that I captured in that room will never be captured again.

Who is the biggest star that you have worked with?

Without a doubt, Jeanene Fox, international supermodel. She’s been on every European magazine cover, Stuff Magazine, and others; she’s done the Super Bowl AXE commercial just last year. She was huge and yet so down to earth! She flew down here just to shoot with me for Kinesis, her piece titled “Va Bene Capitano” got rave reviews. Check out the video on youtube for yourself.

We know you must be getting A LOT of attention from the women, now more than ever. How is Scharad dealing with it especially with the added incentive, that being you’re single now.

Right now, my biggest turn on is an independent woman. That is SO sexy to me.

I’ve learned from past relationships that this type of woman will complete you as a man; she will be the one to become your SUPPORT system. She’s intelligent, sensible and educated with tons of lady swag (coin that). She’s got to be in my dreams and not my nightmares…otherwise…NEXT! Do you like your women stirred or shaken?

Shaken…who wants someone boring? I’m already corny and boring so there has to be a balance to make the relationship exciting. I love a woman who carries herself like a lady but can still bring out the “junglass” every now and then with her gun fingers in the air screaming “pull it, pull it!”

What’s next on the agenda for you and your company?

I think staying on the forefront of innovative ideas and concepts will remain the focus.

Moderation- Anything in excess is a bad thing. Too tight denotes you might be European, a suspect character or both.
