The old classic saying is that to know where you are going you must first know where you have been. If the year 2011 for STYLEZINE is any indication 2012 will prove to be a huge year. We end off the year with our winter issue, PAIRED UP the second installment of this series. The debut issue featured a female look book for styling during the eventful and stylish holiday season but this time around all of our writers worked in teams to bring you a jam packed issue with articles for everything you could possibly be looking for. Some will make you think, head down to your favorite clothing and accessories store and maybe even shed a tear or two. It is sure to evoke some sort of emotion. A special thank you to all of our sponsors that made this issue possible. editor@stylezinemagazine.com
Everything that inspires you inside these pages we want to hear from you. Send us pictures or stories of your PAIRED UP experiences. In 2012 continue to explore, experiment and inspire.

VOLUME 6. DECEMBER 2011 AM I MY BROTHERS’ KEEPER? I came across an article in a book one day. The cartoon inset captured a message that has forever been etched in my memory. It was the picture of two men in a little sailing boat. The man at the left of the boat was furiously bailing water out of the boat. The man at the right side of the boat was relaxed with his hands behind his head. The caption at the bottom of the cartoon revealed what the latter was thinking: “I’m sure glad I’m not at the other end of the boat!” Now this may seem hilarious to some to see the stupidity of the relaxed man, as the failure of the man working to get the water out of the boat would result in both men going down in the boat. However, how often do we turn a blind eye to the struggles that exist in certain pockets of our society with no inclination whatever of helping? In the story of Cain and Abel, many of us are like Cain—we wonder why we are held responsible for the actions of others. We wonder why we should care and be concerned about what goes on around us. We wish that we could just be held accountable for our tight knit family—us four and no more. However, the very nature of community is in opposition to this notion. The fact of the matter is what happens around us does impact us. We are interdependent. Yes, we are independent in many ways and can determine our own destinies and future. However, we are also interdependent. What happens in our circle of life is largely dependent on a great number of people around us. Family is the structure of community. Therefore, we are not “an island to ourselves.” We have many good citizens in our society today, who will never dream of committing violence or misdemeanors against the state or another person. In other words, they are well meaning, law abiding citizens. Many of my peers, who are hardworking professionals, who give their time and resources for the betterment of society, struggle with just how involved do I have to be? How responsible am I for the chaos around me? Many choose to give what they can from a distance, jump in their expensive cars and drive away to their gated communities. The big question is how long can we survive by 8
DECEMBER 2011
simply building more gated communities and trying to hide away from the rest of society, whom we deemed have fallen too far to be reached? Sometimes we are under the misguided belief that “nothing can be done” or “we are too far gone” or “what can I do to make a difference?” Such should perhaps have been the thoughts of Mother Theresa when she left the safe confines of the Catholic Convent and ventured out, with no funding and resources, to reach out and help the poorest of the poor in India, a seemingly endless stream of poor people. The Bahamas has many examples of persons who left their comfort zones to reach out and help their fellowmen and build a nation in the process. We all need to examine ourselves and find ways that we can give of ourselves to help build our nation. The spirit of volunteerism is too weak in our country, particularly at a time when it is most needed. As a child, I remember that there were several civic organizations with meaningful, character-building programs, such as Boys and Girls Brigades, Boys and Girls Scouts, Kiwanis, Brownies and Girl Guides— programs that filled the otherwise long idle after school hours. Today, many of these organizations lack volunteers. We, in our society, have become too busy; too busy for children, too busy to shape the future, too busy to mold a generation. I urge every well-meaning Bahamian to remember that we are all in this same boat. There are severe cracks and outright holes in many areas of this boat—let’s not seek to bailout in this time of trouble. Instead, let us seek to help plug the holes, fill in the missing gaps and come alongside the struggling families. Let’s do our part to save this Bahamaland—the mother ship for us all. Our Bahamas is worthy of being saved and we have what it takes to save it. Bahamians working together can do this, we can make it happen, we can create a new Bahamas—ONE BAHAMAS! I hoped you enjoyed this article. Let me know what you thought and it might end up in the next issue. Tweet me @tkdadon and let me know your opinion!

DECEMBER 2011
This go around I’ve got two tapes for you to check out. I ‘ll start off with one that you might have expected (or not). Lupe’s “Friend of the People”. A tape that was suppose to be released in 2009 but was cancelled by Lupe. I guess the fans kept asking for it so late in November he decided to shell this one out to the people (You know, being their friend and all lol). The tape’s cover is a simple black cover with the name “Jesus” posted boldly in the center. I haven’t heard anything as yet, but I pretty such thats gonna bring him some controversy (but hey that’s probably exactly what he wants right now). Lupe drops just twelve joints on this one, with a modest two features from relatively unknown artists “Dosage” &”Lil Ronnie”. Dosage shares the title track with Lupe, while Lil Ronnie is featured on the fast paced “Joaquin Phoenix” track. This tape has gotten a lot of attention most likely due to it’s long wait more so than the tracks themselves but there are some superhot songs the help pull the tape up where it falls. If you’re a Lupe Fiasco fan you’re definitly gonna wanna play “SNDCLSH In Vegas” & “SLR” among the other nice joints on there. Next Up, “Diary of a Mad Man” a tape I’m almost surprised I’m talking about, but definitely worth the wordage. I started listening to tank pretty heavy about six months ago (No. I’m not in love). I had listened to his music for years but only recently realized how much I liked his style and consistency as an artist. He’ an artist I can definitly put up there with the likes of a Ginuwine, a Joe or a Tyrese. I won’t get into any of his album songs (that’ll lead to a whole other thing lol), but just know that his upcoming album “Savior” is due out this month (December) and if only based off of what he did on this mixtape, it’s something that you guys out there are gonna wanna get to play for that lady in your life and something for you lady’s to help your guys remember how powerful emotions can be. Hot tracks to check out, “Underrated” “Don’t Be Mad At me” & “Stars Girl”. Enjoy!!!
>ARTISTWATCH HEAVY D
Over the past two or three years the number of iconic artists that have lost their lives too far soon has continued to grow at an almost steady pace. It seems like every other day someone else loses a battle with death. Performers and musicians many of us have grown up listening to and simply never expected to lose continue to fall. That said, One of the most recent has been Heavy D. The former Heavy D & The Boyz front man, left behind many unforgettable hits that hopefully won’t be lost to the generations. His charisma was unmatched. His style, incomparable. He was a master at what he did and will continue to be seen as such. Heavy D was an inspiration to many of his peers and many around the world, so it could only be expected that a few people would want to leave
their last thoughts and memories of him on wax. Multiple records have surfaced since the time of Heavy’s demise. But one of the best Tributes I’ve heard so-far though, has been from a close personal friend of his. The legendary DJ Quik. DJ Quik drops off a short but sweet tribute to the fallen soldier, over a dope beat that just kind of makes your heart beat a little harder. The track is called “Heavy Mr. Big Stuff” and sums up what Quik had to say nicely, leaving you wishing the track didn’t have to end and reminding you how HEAVY one man’s influence can be. R.I.P. >ANTICIPATED These Albums are just a few of the ones that have been announced with dates close to the holiday season that you may want to gift yourself or someone else with Rick Ross’ “God Forgives, I Don’t” Ross & Jeezy’s little dispute lead to fans hoping their favorite artist would drop firs to slump the sales of the other. It also lead to a lot of back and forth between Ross and Jeezy, after which Ross stated in an on-air radio interview that his album would definitely drop first and have no push backs. Guess he was wrong. His album is now rescheduled to drop about two weeks later than planned, but still a few days before Young Jeezy’s. Let’s see what the numbers are like...Men lie, woman lie. You know the rest. The album drops December 13th. Common’s “The Dreamer, The Believer” - Appropriately titled, Common’s next album features tracks heart-set on making you both dream & believe. Even the album’s cover artwork and single art are inspiring pieces, that u can’t simply pass by without staring at them for a minute or two. Having released a few singles so far we can see that Common is in a state of continuous growth and maturing as an artist. Go out and cop this album on the 20th. Tank’s “Savior” - Now Tank has been doin’ it for a minute, makin’ tunes that we’ve all sung along to; but everything he’s released in the last two years has been like he’s trying to make music to help repopulate a dying planet. (A little overboard I know, but you get the gist). His last mixtape and album were total bangers and if compared to the two tracks he’s released so far from “Savior” (“She Got That” feat. Keri Hilson & “Compliments” feat. Kris Stephens), the rest of the album is a sure banger...no doubts about it. Savior is set to drop this month, no exact date yet but keep an eye out T-Pain’s “RevolveR” - Originally set for a
44
DECEMBER 2011
2010 release, T-Pain’s “RevolveЯ” album has garnered a lot of talk and seems to actually be dropping when it’s suppose to this time. December 6th, all you Pain fans can look forward to this stocking stuffer making some numbers. The album give the impression that it will have some hot tracks, though songs like “Take Your Shirt Off”, “Rap Song” & “Reverse Cowgirl” that brought the album considerable attention have now been announced as promo tracks and are no longer on the track list, we should still be able to expect some good joints...or at least some of the catchy stuff that we’re used to from Teddy Pender like “5 O’clock” which features Lily Allen & Wiz Khalifa. Young Jeezy’s “TM: 103 Hustlerz Ambition” - Jeezy is coming back at ‘em again with his fourth solo album and the third installment of his “Thug Motivation” series. Hot on the heels of his very popular mixtapes “The Real Is Back” parts 1 and 2. I’m sure Jeezy is a very happy man right about now, he’s got what seems like a definite release date set for the 20th of the month after a hay-load of push-backs and hold ups. This album is turning out to be worth the wait. With songs like “F.A.M.E.” feat. T.I. (The album’s third single) & “I Do” on there, there’s almost no way this album can fail. The all-star lineup that Jeezy put together for this album is also pretty darn impressive. Young has got himself features from T.I., Jigga, Andre 3k, Eminem, Fabolous, and Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa among others. I do wish he had more solo tracks, but I’m sure the album will do great even though it is a little feature heavy. The Roots’ “Undun” - The Original Hip-Hop band gets set to drop another banger of an album this December. The Roots are not a group that’s known to disappoint so we know without much promotion that the soulful feel they always bring will be the heart of this project. The album is set to detail the life of fictional character “Radford Stephens”. Notable features on “Undun” include Big K.R.I.T., Bilal & Phonte. By the looks of it this one is going to be another game changer for The Roots. December 6th is the date for this one.

This was my longest shoot to date, but I was still wide awake for each moment. After 9 hours, 5 hilarious models, 1 techno-hyped photographer and 3 vodka and tonic later, we wrapped on my most diverse photo shoot. I was excited to style guys from different backgrounds and show other guys how to use minimum pieces for multiple looks. The biggest misperception of most guys is that they can wear anything they see on a mannequin. Because we’re all different sizes and lead different lifestyles, that is simply impossible. In this edition of “Paired Up”, I was able to show varied ways of dressing well for your specific lifestyle. I hope that most of y ou are able to incorporate the tips given and apply the styles to your body type. All the best on your journey to a more “dapper” you!

THE BLACK SUIT WE ARE MOVING INTO THE 22ND CENTURY AND SO SHOULD YOUR SUIT. Nothing says ‘MAN’ more than a suit and moreso the make of the suit. Whether the finish, fabric, smaller details, buttons, shirt, tie or fit, all these elements blend together to make the perfect statement. WIth so many patterns to choose from like solids, stripes, herringbone, windowpane or tweed, nothing says ‘Im confident’ as a well dressed suit on a man. The key thing with men is that some find it hard to fit the right suit. We’re going to show you what a good fitting suit should look like and how it should fall on you. This is the true definition of style.

“I’d say my style is classic mixed with trendy elements, but I tend to mix it up every once in a while with urban pieces. I suppose I dress the way I do because I like tailored looks since I’m so small. I also prefer to wear things I’m certain most guys in Nassau or the Bahamas would wear. It’s important to stand out.”

THE BLACK SUIT
The SHOULDERS of the suit jacket should fall slightly over your own. Usually this works by going a size down on your jacket. The SLIM suit is called ‘slim’ for a reason, make sure your complimentary pieces are ‘slim’ as well. Your shirt, tie, tie clip and watch should have this feel as well. Get a good TAILOR to taper your suit jacket. Have him taper the sides to conform to your body. Opt for a SHORTER jacket as well. You should be able to fit your hands under your jacket and into your pants pockets comfortably. Your pant LEG fall just above your shoes (this is good). Don’t be afraid to show some sock action either. Divorce the ‘bunched up’ look for a more sophisticated shilouette.

“Every year I spend a lot of money on custom made suits because I hate wearing store bought suits. Being a young CEO of multiple businesses, I am unique and so is my style...therefore my suits should reflect that! Tailor made just like me.”
“A man in a suit is sexy because it adds another dimension to his character. It makes him look confident, professional and in charge. A suit isn’t worn everyday, unless you work on Wall Street and so when he does wear one, it amps up his sexiness!”

AT WORK Pair your suit with black dress loafers, a pattern shirt and tie. Throw in a pocket piece and you are looking sharp, professional and clean at the same time. Walk in the office looking like this and that promotion may be on the way‌(maybe not) but you get the picture.
CHRISTMAS PARTY Switch things up by pairing some embroidered suede loafers, a bold solid colour (plum: seen here) and a skinny tie and you will STILL stand out in this environment.
HAPPY HOUR Feeling a little lazy? No worries. Lose the suit jacket, open up your tie and shirt, throw on a stylish pin and you will be as good as gold with this look.

Everything slims down with a well fitting suit. LAPELLES slim down giving the body a more slimmer look. Add a POCKET PIECE. It gives your suit that pop it needs. If you have a patterned shirt and tie, go with a patterned pocket piece as well. If your shirt’s STRIPES go up and down, you can pair a diagonal stripped tie with it. Trust us, it looks GOOD! 58

AT WORK Just because you work attire is rough and hard does not mean your ‘play’ clothes have to do the same. Don’t worry about your size. Here’s how we make it work…
60
DECEMBER 2011
AT PLAY Mix and match solids in your closet. Patterns can exagerate your size. Keep these to a minimum.
Patterned SHIRTS work well as an accent with your outfit. For larger males who wear too much pattern, this will over-emphasize your frame. If you don’t want too look too ‘fixed’ shorten the sleeves to ‘cool’ down your look. And please! Your sleeve should be pulled midway between your elbow and wrist. Any higher and you might as well wear a short sleeved shirt. The CARDIGNitself works well for guys who dont do suits or jackets. This piece can be equally as dressy. Button it up for a clean, refined image.

“Classic cool with a little bit of fashion sprinkled in. My look must stay timeless. I dress the way I do because I’m a large man and what looks good on me is a timeless classic style. I like to give my look a bit of ruggedness because although I like to look good I never want to look as if I planned out my whole outfit. That’s for women.”

“I dress the way I dress because it is comfortable for me and expressive. Clothing should be fit to suit my size and allow me to look neat. The image I go for expresses how I want clothing to look on me. I either want to look neat, let the clothing show off my physique to a certain extent or look laid back and chill. V-NECKS are great for athletic frames. The sleeves are shorter and they highlight arm definition. We also like Vs because they hug the shoulders really well. The ladies seem to love well defined shoulders on a man. Add a VEST to take your casual style up a notch. It should fit well (not baggy). Don’t be afraid to wear a BELT. Seen here is a casual belt to add to this style. Wearing a belt shows off your smaller waist which then emphasizes your ‘V’ shaped torso.

THIS IS THE ONE PIECE OF JEWELRY EVERY MAN SHOULD TAKE SERIOUSLY. IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AND EVENTUALLY WHERE YOU SEE YOUR SELF IN LIFE. A WATCH ALSO DEFINES STYLE WISE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MAN. LETS SEE HOW THIS SMALL STAPLE MAKE A BIG STATEMENT. Ok honestly, if you’re not an astronaut, deep see diver, scientist or race car driver. Your watch face doesn’t need to have 1 million dials on it. You know you really can’t use any of them, so truly, you just bought the watch because it looked good. Well fear not, a man who knows his watch and whos watch fits his lifestyle will carry one very far up the success ladder.

His watch can also define his social status, accentuate physical features and prmote a helathy lifestlye. I always keep these things in mind when noticing or buying a man’s watch. So keep in mind, the same way he buys a watch is the same way he will buy a suit or pair of shoes (wink)!” “I’m a big fan of watches, but for me, the face of the watch says A LOT. If that does not grab my attention first…its not worth buying.”
STEEL Classy, stylish and sharp. Spend some more money for a quality steel watch. Wear it with casual or dressy styles but make sure it fits you!
BIG WATCH FAN MATT BAIN Model
“I like watches that are simple with a sharp finish. I LOVE seeing a man with a watch that stands out but isn’t too flashy.”
KEEP IT SIMPLE Aneka Stewart Retail Manager
“In my line of work, my watch defines my personality. It’s the one piece of jewelry I take seriously according to my lifestyle.”
UTILITY Ok, we usually are not big fans of the G-Shock because of their over-run popularity, but they fit the utilitarian man very well. Work hard with this watch on or play harder with it on as well.

A PAIR OF 5 SHOE S EVERY MAN SHOULD OW N
www.stylezinemagazine.com
It was once a time when the average man bought shoes out of necessity. Hence he would own at the most 3-5 pairs...six if he was trying to be a “big spender”. Nowadays, the average man has more shoes than men of bygone days would even dream of having. There are however Five Staple Shoes that should always be in every man’s wardrobe. Even if he were to throw out all of his other footwear, this five is essential to the wardrobe of the well dressed man. Take Note...

LACE-UPS (OXFORDS)
You cannot achieve the proper look without a pair of classic lace-ups. You can chose between black or brown, or have both. Brown hints at luxury while black lends itself to practicality and a chic cool. A pair of brown shoes are the perfect accessory to a navy blue suit or for dressing up a casual look for everyday coolness. Black makes certain outfits more sleek, especially more formal night-time affairs. A decent pair of oxfords can last you many years.
THE DRIVING LOAFER
Originally made by Tod’s in the 70’s “Driving Loafer” simply refers to the pairs that sport the little pebble-like nubs on the soles. Since then, there are many brands and styles of driving loafer to chose from. It gives him a less stuffy look than the man who wears his dress shoes with his more causal outfits. A pair of dark denim or khakis, a crisp white button down oxford shirt and a pair of driving loafers can be your staple look for all smart-casual affairs. Driving loafers should be simple in design and either dark brown or light brown, leather or suede.
THE BOAT SHOE
A timeless classic that has made a resurgence into the wardrobe’s of men worldwide. Best for any casual look or even a dressed up look that you want to give a bit of casual pop. The staple colors to buy this in are either dark brown or navy blue. Since you may already have a pair of dark brown driving loafers, buying these in navy blue gives your footwear a splash of color while remaining strong and masculine. Paired with long or short khakis, polos, button ups even t-shirt, khakis and a blue blazer, boat shoes show you can relax and take it easy while staying grown man sexy.
THE CANVAS SNEAKER
The most versatile of al staple footwear in a man’s wardrobe next to the boat shoe is the canvas/leather sneaker. It can be worn with all casual looks. For a flair of cool, pair them with a relaxed suit and a brightly colored watch and look like your the guy people want at all their parties. When looking for a pair, lean toward the more simple designs and the most classic pairs from your favorite brands, namely, Converse Alll Stars and Jack Purcells, Adidas Stan Smith’s, and if your willing to spend a little more cash, Common Projects. Color-wise it’s best to stick with all white for versatility purposes. Or black with white bottom or white with colored bottom.
THE JORDAN I & III SNEAKER (Unofficial Staple) The best of the Classic J’s to chose from are the 1’s and the III’s. These designs have the most timelessness and easygoing sleekness of all.

“I think the (fire lens) Oakley may be the most atrocious accessory EVER! How does anyone find them attractive? Once I see them on a man, its an automatic turn off. I think a guy who wears stylish eyewear says that he is regal. Those Oakley shades are rediculous. Mature your style and man up! Get grown and sexy.” www.stylezinemagazine.com

HOW 1 PAIR OF JEANS GOES A LONG WAY IN A MAN’S WARDROBE.
www.stylezinemagazine.com
TURTLENECKS are great pieces to pair with jeans. They don’t always have to be worn with jackets. Wear them with your fav pair of jeans. We only endorse the LEVI 501xx. We love them for one reason and one reason only. They work with ANY outfit. Pair them with a tee shirt, or with a dress shirt and blazer, a sweater. They go great with ANYTHING you own already. BOOTS and jeans go together like chicken and fries. Maintain this rugged look by adding a pair.

“Hands should be free to do other things than hold your jeans up! Plus, I don’t wanna see your underwear! If you’re my man... other women don’t need to see them either! Grow up and show some class.”
“I dont think certain men take wearing jeans seriously. I don’t want to see ballhuggers on a guy nor do I want to see him in parachute pants either. The right fit makes him the right man. Believe it or not, women DO notice a man’s butt in jeans.” “A man looks very sexy, seductive and alluring in a pair of fitted jeans, especially if he has a great physique. Once he carries himself well, I find that to be so debonair.”

JEANS TIP YOUR JEANS SHOULD FIT YOU WELL ENOUGH TO SIT ON YOUR WAIST WITHOUT A BELT. THE INSEAM OR SEAT OF THE JEANS SHOULD FALL JUST BELOW YOUR CROTCH. STRAIGHT & RELAXED JEANS ARE ALWAYS THE WAY TO GO.
