EDITORSLETTER VOLUME 4. SUMMER 2012
When you mix great people, and a tranquil location you create smooth perfection. It is said that “success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts’. The ‘Bay’ debuted last year as our editorial take on lifestyle living/visiting at the most beautiful beaches in the world, The Bahamas. The ‘Bay’ went on to record +3000 new readers and currently holds the title as our most read issue since inception of our Magazine. The task at hand this year was to recreate a tranquil atmosphere this time at a beach home down at. We took our time to ensure that it represented a fun yet realistic depiction and out do the previous effort put forth. To all our sponsors, models, the ‘TEAM’ and hard working staff at Stylezine Magazine, I say thank you. We present to you The Return to The Bay.

FANLETTER VOLUME 4. SUMMER 2012 I’m very glad that there is a Bahamian magazine that digs into the depths of fashion, culture, entertainment and style. The chief editor and his marvelous team have opened my eyes to a wider variety of fashion senses that is mind blowing to me. Every month I get “antsy” and “giddy” when I see posts of their upcoming issues. From the feature stories on the creativity of Mr. Stefan Davis ‘ airbrush artist, Freddie Lightbourne’s fitness and how he juggles being a father, down to the “Heart Throbs” with their melodious voices; Mr. Sammi Starr, Sketch & CJ Priest. Yes, there are ALL a few of my favorite issues, but out of them all is “The Bay,” the magazine’s first swimsuit issue. Wow! (Mudda-sick!) “The Bay,” screams summer bodies with beautiful people and that ‘sweet’ island life. Victoria Secret and Ralph Lauren models don’t have ANYTHING on the models in this magazine. Ok, so that’s a ‘slight’ exaggeration but they do recruit some very attractive people. Every time I turn the page. (BAM) there’s a guy with his ripped body that’s to drool over, or some female whose body I wish I had! I also enjoy the feeling of getting to know them a little bit more without meeting them in person with little descriptions of them by knowing their Zodiac sign, what interests them, their likes and dislikes and how they keep their bodies fit. This magazine by far is the best, hands DOWN! Oh, have I not mentioned that I so love how they ALWAYS have me on the edge of my seat when they send updates on Twitter and Facebook? I can’t wait to tear through the pages of The Bay 2012. Maybe one day, I’ll have this body ready for The Bay. (sighs) Stylezine is the best! 8

TENIKA MAHONEY LV: Can you introduce yourself to the audience? T. Mahoney: My Name is Tenika Shauna Mahoney, I am 23 years of age and was born in Birmingham, UK. Now living in London, UK. LV: What is your background? TM: My background is British-Caribbean (Jamaica) LV: How long have you been modeling? TM: I have been modelling professionally for 3/4 years LV: What has been your most m e m o r a b l e modeling gig to date? TM: I have two m o s t memorable gigs. The first one was modelling and dancing for american rapper; Nelly at the UK 2010 Mobo Awards in the UK and the second was Flying out to
Russia to model for a fantastic Australian salon named ‘E Salon’ at the 2011 Alternative Hair Show. LV: If you had to choose a dream shoot what would it entail? Who would shoot it? Who would you wear? TM: My dream shoot would be modelling along side supermodel Omahyra Mota doing a very chic edgy style shoot. Something similar to Rihanna’s spread in Vogue Italy. LV: What qualities do you think are needed to become a ‘Supermodel’ TM: To become a supermodel, I personally think you need to have a strong sense of uniqueness. There are a lot of supermodels that have gained such high success due to their strong qualities and individuality. I believe a ‘supermodel’ is more than a pretty face but one who has many aspects to bring to the fashion industry. LV: Given your wealth of experience, what advice would you give to an up and coming model? TM: My advice to up and coming models would be to firstly do your research!! Find out what the common do’s and don’t’s are within modelling industry and master them as much as possible. I would also suggest that they should know what type of model they want to become, whether its a high fashion model, lingerie model, glamour model etc they should take time to completely understand what would be required within that specific area(s). And most of all enjoy it! The pressure of the modelling world can be very intense but the rewards will be even better! LV: Runway or Photo Shoot? Why? TM: RUNWAY!! I prefer runway over photoshoot as strutting down the catwalk gives me the ability to demonstrate my full character live in person. LV: What’s the best advice ever given to you as it relates to your modeling career? TM: The best advice I have received thus far is to always stay true and comfortable with any projects I do in modelling and never feel pressured to do anything just because the money may be right. LV: If you had to choose one song for your runway walk as you opened your favorite designer’s show, what song would it be? TM: The song I would love to walk out to when opening a designer’s show would be The Fugees - Oh La La La Thanks LaVaughn ‘LV’ Adderley

iPod – Whether it is downloading your favorite magazine or a DJ App to assist with your playlist, technology is advanced now where you can download & go. Fedora/Beach hat - Throw a trendy straw hat into your beach bag to keep your head cool. Hats add a special touch to any swimwear attire. Beach Cover Up - As the day progresses and evening comes, the weather can become cooler. If you get a little chilly, you’ll be prepared with a beach cover-up packed in your beach bag. Sunscreen - Be sure to always wear sunscreen before heading outdoors. Try a waterproof variation to ensure it will stay on when you’re in and out of the water. Sandals - Select a pair of comfortable, yet sassy sandals that pair well with your bikini choice. Lip Balm - To protect your lips from the hot summer sun, you’ll want to bring along a lip balm with SPF. Sunglasses - Not only does your skin need protection from the sun, but your eyes are also at risk for sun damage. Sunglasses are not only for sun protection, but can give you a sophisticated and sexy look. Try a dark shade to keep the sun from irritating your eyes at the beach. Waterproof Mascara Waterproof mascara is a must-have product for women who love to wear makeup. It won’t run even when you’re having fun in the water and will continue looking great throughout the day. Simply reapply when needed and your eyes will maintain their “wide-eyed” appearance. After Sun Treatment - Once you’ve spent some time in the sun, you’ll want a soothing after-sun treatment. Apply the solution several times throughout the day to hydrate the skin and provide relief to hot skin. Water - Take a refillable water bottle. Sun, sand and sea water are three of the most aggressively dehydrating forces. So make sure and bottle up. Beach Towel – While lounging on the sand, a colorful beach towel can reflect your personal style. The brighter is always better when it comes to beach style.

Making your way to the beach this summer? These two albums are awesome riding music to play on your way there. Numbers four and six on the billboard charts respectively. Big K.R.I.T. ‘s “Live From The Underground” and Curren$y’s “The Stoned Immaculate” are making waves in the recording industry. These albums are a reflection of years of hard work from both artist. Though Curren$y has been signed before, multiple times in-fact, this is still his major label debut album. He has only ever released street/independant albums and mixtapes, until now. We won’t get too In depth about track lists and songs, just know that if you’re trying to get some chill music for the summer, these are the two albums to get your hands on. Each of these albums also had some “pre-album” music drop via mixtapes that you might also want to check out. Krit’s “4eva N A Day” mixtape, which is considered one of the best mixtapes this year and Curren$y’s “Smoke One For Spitta” (Exclusively On LiveMixtapes.com), which didn’t get much acclaim but seeing how it led to the album, I guess it’s still worth a play before you throw the album in. This summer is gonna be one for the books musically, so definitely check out these joints while history is made, also check the videos below to see the process behind making Curren$y’s debut album and the official video for one of the lead singles from the album “What It Look Like”, Featuring Wale.

The most anticipated album of the summer is set to be released by the G.O.O.D. Music family sometime within the next two months, featuring the entire G.O.O.D. Music team titled “Cruel Summer”, which is set to be released along with a film of the same name which is inspired by the the album. The short film was premiered in the Cannes just a few weeks ago (You can check out the movie poster on this page). They’ve already released a dope video for their lead single “Mercy” and we know Ye has some more genius up his sleeves just waiting to be played. Until then check out the video for Mercy and Yeezy’s controversial track “Cold” (formally Thera Flu, then changed to Way Too Cold) and I hope you have a G.O.O.D. summer.

SWIMWEAR If you actually do decide to stop profiling on the sidelines and dive headfirst into all the action, make certain you leave the basketball shorts courtside and invest in an actual pair of swim trunks. Keep it simple, or if you’re a risk taker, go for stripes or bold prints.
LINEN SHIRT No. These aren’t your grandfather’s shirts with the weird mothball scent. Linen shirts have long been in a staple in many a Bahamian man’s ensemble for an upscale occasion. Contrary to popular belief, they can actually be pulled off, if worn in the right size. Perfect for pre-dip festivities, a slim-fit linen shirt will help you beat the heat because of its breathable fabric.

Summer’s here, and its blistering heat attacked without ample warning. But before you become even more dismayed about the weather and more pressed about not being able to keep up with the cool kids at this season’s events and parties, we’ve got you covered for what’s sure to be one of many pool parties…even the ones after sunset.
SHORTS If you actually do decide to stop profiling on the sidelines and dive headfirst into all the action, make certain you leave the basketball shorts courtside and invest in an actual pair of swim trunks. Keep it simple, or if you’re a risk taker, go for stripes or bold prints.
BRACELETS & WATCHES To complete the look, add some gear to your wrist. A fly watch is enough to get people ogling, but why stop there? Amp it up a notch with cool beaded or leather bracelets, but not so many that one may think you can make an acoustic guitar and incense manifest itself out of thin air.
STRAW FEDORA Despite it being night time and considering it will be outdoors, a straw fedora would be more apropos for the event than a pair of sunglasses. Wearing one is also an excellent way to conceal an askew hairline courtesy of the new barber you went to hours prior.
And there you have it. Looks that will have all the ladies trying to garner your attention as they try to decipher whether it’s the weather or you bringing all the heat to the party.
TOMS, THE SLIP-ON or ESPADRILLES Air Forces Ones? Naah…those days are over. Slip on a pair of Toms, slip-on’s or espadrilles for an easy going, laid-back look while simultaneously bringing the hype.

Number 2: Did you know that the body takes energy to regulate the temperature of cold water? The body does burn a few calories in order to process cold water, so that is a small tip for you weight watchers out there. Room temperature water is better if you’re dehydrated, because the body can absorb it immediately. Also, it is good to drink room temperature water in the morning to delay those extreme feelings of hunger before your 99 cent grits and tuna.
H2NO
You know what really gets on my nerves? The fact that we need to drink water on a daily basis. I think it was designed as an additional irritant in our lives to have to consume water in order to survive. Personally, having to drink water is annoying to me, and I don’t like it. I can go one or two days without drinking water directly – I drink juice, coffee, milk, beer, anything to avoid consuming water deliberately. What’s the hype about anyway? It doesn’t taste any kind of way, it isn’t fun to drink, it doesn’t make you tell the truth like alcohol does, and it is boring to look at. Apparently, it is necessary for life, cleanses the body, helps you to have healthier and better looking skin, and improves your ability to deposit waste at the end of the day. Bleh. Whatever. You know these fancy scientist people don’t know what they’re talking about half the time anyway, with their fancy white robes and degrees. Poppycock. The cons far outweigh the pros in my opinion! However, I’ve been told it is necessary. So! In order to improve my daily water intake, I went to the encyclopedia of our generation – google.com – to find ways in which I could drink water without having to think about drinking water. So you can utilize these handy dandy tips (that I have tiefed), as I will, in order to ensure that you drink enough water on a daily basis. Number 1: (this one was more effective for me) – Buy a bottle that can hold the amount of water that you wish to drink in a day. Take the bottle with you on your snack and lunch breaks, rather than getting a soda or drink with that combo. In this manner, you can take little sips here and there throughout the day, in order to finish it by the end of the day. Bring it to work and fill it throughout the day as well, or on a daily basis. You dun tiefin their pens, might as well carry some water too.
38
AUGUST 2012
Number 3: Employ a timer. Set your alarm timer or watch to beep every hour or give you a reminder to drink some water. Sometimes you tend to lose track of time, and by setting a reminder for yourself, you can remember to hydrate before moving on to the next project. Number 4: (my favorite) – add lemons or lime to your water. Get little fancy and let your inner bourgeoisie or in local layman’s terms BOO-JEE come out. By adding lemons, limes, or even cucumber to your water, it can make you want to drink more of it as it adds some flavor or a little taste to it. This is also cheaper than buying those fancy bottles of flavored water, and can make you feel a little happier too. Number 5: eat foods and drink juices that are naturally high in water content. Watermelons are a good source of water, as well as cranberry juice. A tomato is also 95% water, and an egg is 74% water. Find foods that are high in content that can assist you with your daily water intake. Irritating as it may be, drinking water is a necessity for you to remain healthy and active. Summer is upon us, and our need for water to keep hydrated and not pass out is increasing. Hopefully these few tips can assist you in your daily intake. If not, it’s whatever. *sips beer*

AU COURANT THERE WAS high fashion meets street wear and THERE IS Au Courant. The latter perfectly crafts the juxtaposition of street wear and high fashion that makes every attempt before it seem substandard at best. Influences, though not obvious, include Ricardo Tisci, Balmain, Wings + Horns and Rick Owens. Through his Tumblr , Chaz Jordan (who previously worked for Don C and Virgil Abloh) allows visitors to view his “luxe subconscious” filled with tastefully nude women, an obsession for everything Mercedes Benz, the poetic verses of Kanye West and occasional snapshots for foodies. If his subconscious has a playlist, I’m sure it includes Track 13 from Jay-Z’s Black Album. The offerings from Au Courant range from the screen printed Félin/Félin Noir, a remix on the exaggerated base layer t-shirt dubbed Samouraï Noir and a personal favorite, Kilt D’agenau, jogger pants with a lamb kilt. Many items are bespoken and details are carefully crafted. Jordan takes time each day to respond to customers and interested minds, reblogging their queries, creating a community that will indeed foster his success. An investment in Au Courant items are $150+ and are sure not to crash unlike Facebook’s IPO.
