It should be read as a parody on the Indesem debate of Friday 8th of may 2009 between Michiel Riedijk, Kas Oosterhuis and Robert Winkel. The image shows the architect who intervenes in the architectural debate without going beyond his own perspective. On several moments the debate was narrowed to swearword terminology and a lack of reasonable argumentation.

Whereas the 'van de Voorzitter' is an introductory article that appears in the index and opens the Stylos section as an recurring integral element. Soms zit het leven je gewoon wat tegen. Natuurlijk zijn regen en onweer niet lekker na een weekend met zonneschijn en warmte, maar soms overkomen je dichterbij huis problemen. Hoewel we enthousiast met ons thema 'parodie' aan de slag waren gegaan, hadden we niet gedacht dat de Goden der Ironie (TM) dit zo letterlijk zouden nemen. We moesten tijdmismanagement, laptopproblemen, burnouts, netwerkcrashes en fietsongelukken bevechten. Hopelijk kan ons dus worden vergeven dat deze pantheon//, met het oog op deze omstandigheden en de Crisis, enigzins crisis-dun is. Deze tweede

thunder can be a real drag when the weekend was full of sunshine and warm weather, but sometimes problems happen a lot closer. didn't think that the Gods of Irony (TM) would take that so literally. We had to fight our way through time mismanagement, laptop troubles, burn outs, network crashes and bike accidents. Hopefully, in the light of these circumstances combined with the worldwide crisis, you can forgive us that this issue is crisis-thin. Our second issue pantheon// parodie wants to show a random humoristic outlook on architecture. Irony, mockery, sarcasm, black humor everything was allowed. Train your laugh muscles - or in case it's not your kind of humor - disapproving headshakes - in different nuances. Workshop licht en decor
Op vrijdag 29 mei organiseert Stylos samen met Theater de Veste een workshop over licht en decor. Ooit afgevraagd hoe het ontwerpproces van een theaterdecor in zijn werk gaat? Hoe de aspecten licht en ruimte gecombineerd worden? Kom het ontdekken tijdens de workshop 'decor en licht' op vrijdag 29 mei in Theater de Veste! In het kader van de Delftsrood week, een week helemaal vol theater activiteiten om het seizoen af te sluiten, organiseert Theater de Veste in samenwerking met Stylos een workshop over decor en licht. Decorontwerper Michiel Voet en lichtontwerper Stefan Dijkman zijn uitgenodigd om door middel van een workshop over licht en ruimte ons de verschillende aspecten van een theaterdecor te laten zien. Michiel Voet, gestudeerd aan de Rietveld academie en winnaar van de Rietveldprijs in 1992, staat bekend om zijn openbare kunstprojecten en theatervormgeving. De afgelopen jaren heeft hij decors ontworpen voor Orkater, filmorkest Max Tak en Introdans. Stefan Dijkman maakt al jarenlang lichtontwerpen voor bekende toneelgezelschappen. Aan de hand van een aantal voorstellingen uit het verleden van muziektheatergezelschap Orkater, die in de Delftsrood week centraal staat, zal het ontwerpproces inzichtelijk gemaakt worden. De vormgevers laten zien hoe ze te werk gaan van concept naar ontwerp en hoe men rekening houdt met technische factoren als zichtlijnen. Wil je hier meer over weten? Hoe is het om architectuurstudent te zijn aan de TU Delft. Een fragment uit het leven van een studente namens de Onderwijscommissie van Stylos.

Het vooruitzicht op mijn derde ontwerpbegeleiding van bachelor 4 heeft me vannacht uit mijn slaap gehouden. De laatste begeleiding voor de tussenpresentatie. Wat voor interessante opdrachten zou ik er vandaag weer bij krijgen? Ik spring opgetogen uit mijn bed, in de douche en op de stoel in de keuken, waar ik mijn drinktontbijtje met Koolhaas opdruk opdrink. Mijn tas had ik al ingepakt, en ik kom een kwartier te vroeg aan. Koffie heb ik niet nodig, dus ik loop voorbij de koffie-automaat en ga ongeduldig zitten. De rest van de groep druppelt ook binnen, en als net iedereen zit, komt ook de geliefde docent binnen.

Mij lag een nobeler doel in het vooruitzicht; het Ontwerpen, de reden van mijn bestaan. Ik word geprezen om mijn creativiteit, de gecreëerde ruimtelijkheid, de helderheid van de proppen papier. De docenten zijn tevreden, mijn taak is volbracht. Met het vooruitzicht op nog vijf van deze prachtige en bovenal stimulerende weken, val ik met een gerust hart¬ in slaap. //

Er werd in 1991 besloten dat er een klein studentenpaviljoen gebouwd ging worden, binnen een semester en de materialen volledig gesponsord door bouwbedrijven. Na 15 kwam paviljoen Blackbox aan de beurt…
Stylos paviljoen Hens Zoet
Laten we vooral niet vergeten Toen er na 15 aan het derde paviljoen begonnen werd was de prijsvraag al uit haar voegen gegroeid. Het moest “professioneel” aangepakt worden met een jury bestaande uit vooraanstaande Bouwkundigen. Hierdoor moest Stylos een ontwerp accepteren wat in de praktijk zeer moeilijk te sponsoren bleek te zijn. Daarom werd er naar geldelijke sponsoring gezocht. Dit bleek lastiger dan voorzien en heeft de bouw aanzienlijk vertraagd. Later kwam daar ook nog de brand overheen. Na verschillende opties overwogen te hebben kwam er een mooie mogelijkheid langs. Het duurzaamheidplatform van de TU, Osiris, zocht een werkruimte. Het paviljoen leek hier geknipt voor te zijn. Na een tijdje werd helaas duidelijk dat ook deze laatste optie niet ging werken door een missende vergunning en gebrek aan geld. Daarom heeft Facilitair Management en VastGoed van de TU er uiteindelijk voor gekozen het gebouwtje te slopen. Het 115e bestuur van Stylos heeft hiermee ingestemd. We hadden natuurlijk ook liever een paviljoen gebouwd, of zelfs al gebruikt, in plaats van gesloopt. Het is heel vervelend voor iedereen die heel veel tijd en moeite in dit paviljoen gestoken heeft dat het uiteindelijk niet helemaal is gelukt. Wat mensen echter snel vergeten is dat studenten mogen falen ten behoeve van een leerproces. We moeten ook van onze fouten leren. Daarom is het belangrijk nu eens precies uit te zoeken wat er fout is gegaan en dit meegeven aan de bouw van eventueel nieuw paviljoen. Ook willen we paviljoen Blackbox niet zomaar laten verdwijnen. Door middel van een na publicatie moeten de herinneringen blijven en hiervoor zoeken we dan ook zeker de hulp van iedereen die meegeholpen heeft aan dit paviljoen. Wat nu te doen met de toekomst? Waar we vooral voor moeten oppassen is dat we niet weer zo onbevangen te werk gaan als de vorige keer. Laten we de problemen nou niet vergeten en kiezen voor een kleiner, en haalbaar project. Misschien moeten we ons zelf helemaal niet meer wagen aan de bouw en alleen de prijsvraag begeleiden. Bij de bouw van de nieuwe faculteit, of dat nou op de Julianalaan is of niet, kan misschien wel een nieuw Stylos paviljoen meegenomen worden. Laten we tot die tijd kijken wat de tijdelijke mogelijkheden zijn. We kunnen bijvoorbeeld een paviljoen bouwen wat in een uurtje op te bouwen en af te breken is. Of een paviljoen wat te boeken staat als een kunstwerk, zoals het studentenpaviljoen in Eindhoven, maar wat wel zeer bruikbaar is. Het huidige bestuur heeft door de afhandelingen van het paviljoen Blackbox niet de kans gekregen dit voorstel uit te werken. Laten we hopen dat hier in de toekomst interesse in is. //

Op woensdag 17 juni, tijdens de Sustainable Industry Day van SASBE2009, heeft Sustainablabla!? iets speciaals in petto. In de ochtend wordt geopend met een lezing van niemand minder dan Michael Braungart, gevolgd door Wubbo Ockels. ’s Middags, na de lunch, ben jij aan de beurt. Onder supervisie van Anke van Hal (praktijkhoogleraar bij RE&H) en Kristel Aalbers (docente Smart Architecture) wordt een workshop gehouden waarin jouw ideeën over (de implementatie van) duurzame maatregelen uiteengezet kunnen worden. De case: het huidige bouwkundegebouw, aan de Julianalaan. Één ding is zeker, zelfs insecten kunnen een kunstachtig tafereel, of misschien wel architectuur, tot stand brengen.
Het grootste kleintje Op de savannes zuiden van de evenaar zijn vreemde constructies te zien. Op het eerste gezicht lijken het grote stenen die op een vreemde manier gevormd zijn. Maar als er beter wordt gekeken, lijkt het meer een cementachtige structuur te hebben. De makers of architecten van deze kastelen zijn termieten die in kolonies van miljoenen werken tot een groot kasteel ontstaat. Termieten worden vaak verward als een bepaalde miersoort, terwijl ze eigenlijk meer verwant zijn met kakkerlakken. Termieten bestaan al meer dan 200 miljoen jaar, dit betekent dat ze al leefden voordat er dinosauriërs waren. Omdat de beestjes een gevoelige huid en lichaam hebben, moeten ze goed beschermd worden tegen predators als vogels en reptielen. Het is dus belangrijk dat hun woongebied ontoegankelijk is voor de grotere

dieren en dat de temperatuur en vochtigheid leefbaar blijft. Net als bij

Opvallend aan al deze prachtige voorbeelden, is dat ze allemaal milieuvriendelijk zijn. Dieren kunnen onvoorstelbare bouwwerken maken en hier prima in overleven. Waarom moeten wij mensen dan gebouwen en kunstwerken van milieubelastende olieproducten maken? Van de dieren hebben wij geen last, waarom moeten ze dan wel verjaagd en beschermd worden tegen ons? Gaia Architects in Schotland is een groep die onder andere onderzoek doet naar de architectuur van dieren en ecologisch design ontwerpt. Volgens hen kunnen we nog veel leren van de architectuur van de dieren. Alle reden voor de dieren om te bouwen is om de kwaliteit van het leven te verbeteren en hiermee hun jongen te beschermen. Het ontwerp van de structuur en sterkte, de klimaattechnische aspecten als ventilatie en het ontwerp van de schil hangt allemaal nauw samen met slechts 1 concept: veiligheid. Volgens Gaia Architects moet er nog veel meer onderzocht worden naar de achterliggende principes en hoe wij als mensen dit zouden kunnen toepassen. On the 11th of May, the seminar is already full in swing. As the organizing students, we are pleased that the theme ‘Point of View’, with the focus on experience and perception in architecture, receives a lot of attention. After the opening of Wytze Patijn the full room A, during the lectures of Herman Hertzberger and Patrick Healy, convinced us that a lot of students support the choice for this theme. The introducing lectures; the lectures of Derksen | Windt Architects about the perception of underground buildings; the debate moderated by Deborah Hauptmann, with three very different positions about communication means in architecture by Robert Winkel, Kas Oosterhuis and Michiel Riedijk; the lectures about daily life in architecture of Dick van Gameren and Takaharu Tezuka; the lecture of Paul Hekkert, to show the possibilities for the user’s perception from the field of Industrial Design; and the lectures of Winy Maas and Enric Ruiz-Gelì about their explorations: All together an interesting program with various points of view. And still we have ahead: the multi disciplinary positions of Oliver Thill (architect), Ronald Ijzermans (concept artist, Guerilla Games) and Marc Boumeester (film producer), the lecture of Marlies Rohmer and of course the final workshop presentations. We hope to offer the faculty an interesting lecture series, and most of all to offer the participants an intensive and inspiring week. Keep in mind that after the seminar the post-publication is coming!
Debate: Oosterhuis, Riedjik, Winkel (Friday, 8th of May) by Indesem spectator Rosemarie Krautheim Michiel Riedjik, Kas Oosterhuis, and Robert Winkel were engaged in a heated debate over perception, the idea as an experience and the drawing. This debate was hosted by Deborah Hauptmann, Associate Director of the Delft School of Design. The only non-TU Delft teacher was Robert Winkel from Mei Architecten, Rotterdam. The main antagonists ‘praktijkhoogleraren Architectonisch ontwerpen’ of the TU, Oosterhuis since 2000 and Riedijk since 2007 turned out to be rivals like no others. What we saw was a hot debate that momentarily twisted into a sort of mud-slinging talkshow. Communication as the subject matter of the debate, so as the theme of the Indesem, happened to shift into an elementary discussion over the question if the drawing is the only means of representing an idea and trading expletives like ‘poor’, ‘bullshit’ and “stubborn modernist”. Nevertheless, one key question was defined by Deborah Hauptmann: “Is the idea necessarily architectural or could experience also be, in this context the very nature of the idea?” - Experience the nature of the idea? The nature of this debate was definitely the drawing. But the debate itself became an experience. Riedijk stated that architecture would not be about experience at all. In his opinion the architectural design process starts with finding a position and “the idea starts with the drawing”, a composition, followed by analysis and critique. Robert Winkel defined Riedijk’s definition as poor, because it would imply that people who can't draw cannot have ideas. A drawing for him is mediating, it is communicating what it needs, but that’s it. Oosterhuis persisted that it’s possible to experience and communicate the idea, realize the idea and build it without any drawing. For him a drawing is a bypass that is not the real thing, because it cannot be used immediately.

Dit thema was voor mij eigenlijk een oase in het huidige architectonische klimaat van concepten en iconen. Het was ook precies dit gevoel dat heerste tijdens de lezing van Takaharu Tezuka, in het begin van de week. Tezuka is een japanner, een architect, een vriend en laat zich inspireren door gewoontes, het gedrag en de wensen van de gebruiker en de opdrachtgever van zijn ontwerpen. Dit resulteert vaak in een gebouw waarin niks opgedrongen wordt en alles in een zeer volledige, dankbare manier gebruikt wordt. Maar vooral in een gebouw waarin ruimte is voor specifieke oplossingen voor karakteristieke eigenschappen en prikkels. Het gebouw wordt het verhaal van zijn bewoner en de bezoeker. Op deze manier wordt Architectuur het vormgeven van een lifestyle van de gebruiker. Plotseling wordt het gebouw persoonlijk en misschien zelfs een “tool” om gedrag en gewoontes expressief te maken. De workshops gaan over de beleving van het ondergrondse. Hoe ziet deze wereld eruit. Voor het eerst heeft de architect de kans om het gebouw onder een lap grond te hangen, in plaats van het erop te plaatsen. Is deze wereld, het ondergrondse een omgekeerde ervaring? //

De betekenis lijkt utopisch, en gaat uit van een opheffing van de incompatibiliteit tussen functies en organen en een wederzijdse versterking van de onderlinge reacties. In de biologie wordt deze term gebruikt om aan te duiden dat verschillende organen samenwerken om eenzelfde functie te vervullen; omgekeerd kan het ook betekenen dat verschillende functies gerealiseerd worden door één orgaan. In de wereld van de architectuur duidt dit fenomeen vooral op het effect van een samenwerking die groter is dan elk van de samenwerkende partijen afzonderlijk zou kunnen bereiken, een thema dat zeer vanzelfsprekend zou moeten zijn. Onlangs gaf Marlies Rohmer een bescheide lunchlezing tijdens de Indesem week. Zij belichtte onder andere het recentelijk geopende ‘Moskeeverzamelgebouw’, wat in vele opzichten een opmerkelijk verhaal is. Het is uitzonderlijk om een Turks én een Marokkaans centrum (met gebeds- en cursusruimten) te combineren met een Nederlandse instelling voor werkvoorziening. Hoewel dit vooral een natte droom is van het integratie beleid, is het ook een uitdaging voor de architect om deze verschillen om te zetten in een synergie.

Volgens Urban Nouveau zijn buitenstaanders geneigd krottenwijken te zien als een besmet deel van de stad. Slechts door naar de gemeenschap te luisteren kan deze hoge dichtheid van naast elkaar geplaatste hard werkende mensen begrijpbaar en tastbaar worden. Intense workshops met de gemeenschappen waar ideeën werden voorgesteld, gebruikmakend van hulpmiddelen zoals schaalmodellen en tekeningen, heeft al geresulteerd in een fysieke synergie. Op basis hiervan, zijn drie huisprototypen ontwikkeld voor de families om uit te kiezen. Mosstika Moss gaat een denkbeeldige synergie aan met de vervuilde betonnen jungle van de moderne stad. Edina Tokodi’s groene graffiti valt voorbijgangers op veelvoudige sensorische niveaus aan. Het is zacht en toegankelijk. Het is in leven. Het is gevormd om ons aan werelden voorbij muren te herinneren.
