The history of the Ana G. Méndez University System (SUAGM) is rich in experiences of growth and expansion. It is a reflection of the standards set by Doña Ana from the beginning: education is a right for all. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of SUAGM’s expansion to the continental United States, we have selected images and events that mark the steps taken to achieve this great milestone in our educational and cultural development. The moments captured in this book are just a sample of the great work done by all those who, in one way or another, have given their time and effort to this endeavor. Introduction Introducción
Born in 1907, Doña Ana G. Méndez was the only one in her family to attend and graduate from College. At a time when as many as 370,000 children were not in school, Doña Ana began to develop a vision to empower the people who typically did not have access to higher education.
In 1941 she opened the Puerto Rico High School of Commerce to specifically target low income students searching for a commercial or technical career. Seven years later, she founded the Puerto Rico Junior College, followed by the Universidad Metropolitana in Cupey (1966) and the Universidad del Turabo in Gurabo (1967). After a few years, the Puerto Rico Junior College changed its name to Colegio Universitario del Este, known today as Universidad del Este.
Collectively, along with Sistema TV, and Ana G. Méndez University - Virtual Campus, these institutions are known today as Sistema Universitario Ana G. Méndez.

At the beginning of the new century, our Board of Directors made the historic decision to expand the SUAGM community into the North American market. With its accelerated bilingual studies program, SUAGM stood in an ideal position to serve the expanding Hispanic population in the continental United States.

When faced with the challenge of designing an educational offering for the overseas expansion, project director Luis Zayas asked: “What does the Hispanic Community need to increase their opportunities to obtain a university education?” It was obvious that SUAGM needed to help breach the gap between the Hispanic success in education and the success of other groups in the US population.
What Mr. Zayas and his team found out was that the main obstacle for Hispanics is the language barrier.

The initial success of the Orlando project opened the doors for SUAGM to replicate the Discipline-Based Dual Language Immersion Model®, in order to serve other communities across the nation. New campuses have been inaugurated in South Florida (2006), Tampa Bay (2010), and most recently the Capital Area Campus in Maryland (2012).
Chancellor Luis Burgos reflects on the steps that brought SUAGM to the level of expansion it enjoys today: “We have filled a niche that was severely needed Luis A Burgos, Ed.D
and completely overlooked: the Spanish speaker who needed an education to get ahead but also needed to master the English language to make use of their degree. We started with 125 students, and by the third year had already surpassed the projected growth for year number five.”

Retos Challenges
Every campus presents new challenges and different demographic data. Community outreach programs and active involvement with local organizations has become a way of life for the SUAGM institutions. For each new location, new market research and focus groups are organized to develop curricula tailored to the needs of the specific groups served.

One can only wonder if Doña Ana could have ever predicted the growth of the Hispanic community in the United States, or that the institution that she established would eventually benefit Hispanics from every country in the Americas. As of 2013, Hispanics make up 17% of the nation’s population and accounted for more than half of its population growth from 2000-2010.

“As an educator in the area of Bilingual Education and Teaching English as a Second Language in the state of Florida for 35 years, and now as Director of the Tampa Bay Campus, it has been very rewarding to learn about the accomplishments of many of our graduate students. We have had two graduating classes who are now working in positions as bilingual school guidance counselors and administrators/managers in different areas. The testimonials I have received from school administrators and corporate personnel have been very positive. The bilingual counselors are making great strides working with bilingual students in grades K-12 and helping Hispanic parents to adjust to the American culture and the new school system. Former students who are now administrators for agencies and companies have expressed what a valuable resource it is to have bilingual employees who can relate to the needs of our Hispanic community. Another rewarding aspect of our graduating students is that many of them now belong to organizations such as: The Hispanic Professional Women’s Association; The Hispanic Services Council; Voz y Acción de Puerto Rico; LULAC and NSHMBA. In the ten years since the SUAGM family expanded its offerings outside of Puerto Rico, it has blazed a new trail in bilingual education. The Florida campuses continue to grow in enrollment, and the new Capital Area Campus in Maryland extends SUAGM’s vision of accelerated bilingual education further than ever before.
Not only has the Discipline-Based Dual Language Immersion Model® proven to be a success, but SUAGM has also developed new processes to better serve its student population. Among other services, the staff provide, free of charge, foreign education credential evaluation and validation for all its applicants so they need not start their studies from the beginning. Our staff is prepared to understand and serve the cultural diversity of a student population with different national origins.
Nowadays, all Florida campuses have graduates from their bachelors and masters degrees, and in 2014 Maryland will host its first graduation. There are SUAGM graduates among the faculty and staff, and the success stories are plentiful.

En los diez años desde que SUAGM expandió su oferta fuera de Puerto Rico, ha trazado un nuevo camino en la educación bilingüe. Los centros de la Florida continúan su crecimiento de matrícula anualmente, y el nuevo centro de Capital Area en Maryland extiende la visión de educación acelerada y bilingüe de SUAGM más lejos que nunca.
El modelo de inmersión bilingüe o Discipline-Based Dual Language Immersion Model® ha probado ser un gran éxito, pero además el Sistema como institución también ha desarrollado nuevos procesos para servirle mejor a sus estudiantes. Como parte de sus servicios, el personal de SUAGM provee evaluación y validación de credenciales educativas extranjeras, gratis. De esta manera los estudiantes no necesitan comenzar sus estudios desde cero en los Estados Unidos. Nuestro personal está preparado para entender y servir la diversidad cultural de una población estudiantil con diferentes orígenes nacionales.
Hoy todos los centros de Florida tienen graduados de bachilleratos y maestrías y en el 2014, Maryland tendrá su primera graduación. Tenemos graduados de SUAGM entre nuestra facultad y asociados y son muchas las historias de éxito.

“I had a big gap in my college education, and it prevented me from taking advantage of certain opportunities in life. In the year 2003, SUAGM gave me the chance to fill that gap. Two years later, with the collaboration of SUAGM and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund of Metro Orlando Campus, I got my Master’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Management. SUAGM provided me with a bilingual education, and it instilled the need for self-fulfillment in me and many others. Today, I am a PhD candidate in Management with a specialization in Finance and a facilitator within the Business Administration department at the Metro Orlando Campus. SUAGM gave me a golden opportunity that I now share with others.”

Just as Do単a Ana never stopped in her quest to develop educational opportunities, SUAGM is still forging ahead, shaping the educational system of the future.
We are making alliances with other educational system, defining services agreements with outside providers and researching markets to pinpoint where the next campus will be opened, to better serve the growing Hispanic population in the United States. All these possibilities are not reserved to the US, but include Central America and other parts of Latin America.
New fully online dual language immersion programs are in the final development stages, and will be implemented to start a new decade of dual language university education. These innovative programs incorporate visual/audio elements like video presentations, live audio chats and others that will take online educational models to another level, where the experience will be more personal and unique for each student.
These are just a few of the amazing and exiting projects that ensure a bright future for SUAGM dual language education and service abroad.

Así como Doña Ana nunca dejó de desarrollar oportunidades educativas, SUAGM sigue avanzando, dando forma al sistema educativo del futuro.
Estamos desarrollando alianzas con otros sistemas educativos, definiendo contratos de servicio con proveedores externos e investigando mercados para definir en dónde se establecerá nuestro próximo campus, para servir la creciente población hispana de los Estados Unidos. Todas estas posibilidades no solo aplican a los Estados Unidos, sino que incluyen a América Central y otras partes de latinoamérica.
Nuevos programas de inmersión bilingüe en línea ya están en las etapas de desarrollo finales y serán implementados para comenzar una nueva década de educación universitaria bilingüe. Estos programas innovadores incorporan elementos visuales y auditivos como presentaciones en vídeo, conversaciones por internet en vivo y otros, que llevarán los modelos de educación en línea a niveles donde la experiencia será más personal y única para cada estudiante.
