International Film Festival Rotterdam
If you’re not a fan of Belgian filmmaker Fien Troch, you will be thanks to her new film, Home. This will be in no small part due to the amazing soundtrack by LA producer/Chromatics multiinstrumentalist Johnny Jewel. Jewel’s score sublimely captures the intoxicating atmosphere of Troch’s dark coming-of-age story. Featuring songs from Chromatics and Symmetry, the synth-laced melodies and thumping beats perfectly evoke the invincibility and melancholy of teenage years. Home comes out 11/01/2017, but thankfully the soundtrack is out there, waiting for your listening ears.
Between 25 January and 5 February, movie lovers should head to Rotterdam for the 46th edition of the IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam). With an accent on new and up-andcoming directors, the festival showcases over 500 films from 50 different countries. Our personal picks: Home, our own Fien Troch’s dark coming-ofage story; David Lynch: The Art Life, John Nguyen’s masterful documentary about the otherworldly master himself; and of course, Gimme Danger, the much, much, MUCH anticipated Jim Jarmusch documentary about the baddest band ever, The Stooges. Rotterdam is close enough: no excuses!

Last issue’s Featured Artist Spencer Clark has something up his trickster sleeve once more; namely, four evenings of projections and performances devoted to ‘unheard masters of reverie’ over at Bozar. This series illuminates the depth of non-academic fantasy art and its practitioners in the 20th and 21st centuries, and celebrates artists on this and other dimensions. Having started last month with a look at HR Giger’s universe, we can still enjoy three more sessions: 16 December with Unarius Foundations (relating to the San Francisco UFO cult); 24 February with Alien Nasty Boys: The Myth Stories of Credo Mutwa; and 28 April with Edens and Auroras, byf the wonderful Amy Roselyne Faust. What’s the first record you bought? Back in 2012 at Techno Import in Paris I bought Freerotation by Soulphiction and this various artists Rawarious.
Tell us, what do you do in life? With three other friends I organise the Deep in House events and outside of that I work at eFarmz, this online store where you can order organic products to be delivered at home.
Your first ever music-related memory? The first Gorillaz album. I was nine at the time and it was the first album that I bought with my savings. I would listen to it every morning on my way to school.
What projects are you working on? I am mainly working on the 5 years party for Deep in House that will take place at the beginning of the summer.
What’s your favourite pastime? Listening to music while smoking dope. Any guilty pleasures? Cookies in milk.
What inspires you? People and the cosmos.
Any regrets recently? Not taking the time to visit my grandma more often.
What do you like best about your place? Its high ceilings. And My housemate Souf who’s one of my oldest friends
Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? The Subbacultcha five-years anniversary party at Beursschouwburg. Deep in House will be curating the music in one of the rooms. We’ve never played at Beurs so we’re pretty excited.
What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? M9 by Alex Picone. Also, I’ve been digging Cosmic Perspective by Mndsgn, it’s the kind of tune that feels good with this coming winter. I recently bought this record Black Fire by Andrew Hill at Crevette Records, it’s perfect to relax to at the end of the day.

Princess Nokia There’s no way of expressing the sensation of glee, release and satisfaction the audio-visual delivery of ‘Tomboy’ brings, Princess Nokia’s track that’s paving the way for her album, 1992. In it, Destiny Frasqueri chants about her little titties and fat belly, flashing cars from an overpass, chomping on cereal on the couch, crouching on car roofs in baggy clothes, sporting a middle parting and wire-rimmed glasses. It’s a smart, playful middle finger to limiting prejudices and biases, and a contagious spark that pushes us to meet this Nuyorican rapper, singer and activist. We called up Destiny as she was chilling on her rooftop in the Bronx. ‘Tomboy’ is a fucking awesome song because of its honesty and playfulness, it’s really dismantling the constraints imposed upon women. Tell me how you came up with the concept for it and, more broadly, 1992. Tomboy is really just my style, my flavour – everything that I give off. A really messy, low-maintenance, cool, crazy weirdo girl who’s totally out there, like a total outcast. She’s just the baddest fucking bitch in the world, y’know? She’s just that girl that no one wanted to be friends with, where all the other girls would be like, ‘Eww, you smell!’ I am that girl. But I love the fact that I carry myself with such bravado, people just pick up on it. That’s what

Princess Nokia ‘Tomboy’ is about, that’s what my new project is about, and that’s what I’m about: being as cool as I could be, being as comfortable as I could be, being as raunchy as I could be. Because that’s who I am. What messages are the most important for you to spread today to your fans with this release? Definitely tolerance, and awareness of white supremacy. I think America’s problem with police brutality is really a problem with white supremacy, which is this infectious disease that lives here in a way that it just doesn’t elsewhere in the world. It’s very saddening. I think topics of awareness, self-love, self-motivation, protest, community, solidarity and support for black people, for the Black Lives Matter movement, and for the families of all those that have suffered losses, are important. LGBT rights. Feminism. Indigenous rights. Immigration rights. Those are all important to me. The right to be yourself, and be happy. I promote kindness and love more than anything. As a born and bred Manhattanite, you say you miss the old NYC. Can you describe that city? I miss the old timers’ block parties. There used to be this stickball tournament, and these huge pina coladas for all the old-school neighbourhood people, the heads, old guys from the neighbourhood. I miss dancing to classic house music in the middle of the street, playing under the fire hydrant spray. That used to be our reality in New York. In some ways it still is for the young girls in my neighbourhood, but it has also been pushed out, into the ghettos, which are being gentrified. Princess Nokia plays 5 years of Subbacultcha (day 1) at Beursschouwburg, on Friday 27 January. The show is free for Subbacultcha members.

Crammed Discs by Tina Herbots
Here’s a freebee: read ‘crammed’ backwards in French and suddenly it all makes sense. Crammed Discs was founded by Marc Hollander in the early 1980s (‘De Mmarc’– get it?). ‘Crammed’ was probably also meant to describe Marc and his mates’ mental musical database filled with excessive amounts of artists coming from all around the globe. The label became an outlet, joining forces together into a multi-functional-zord and releasing albums and singles from various musical genres including homegrown experimental rock, Congolese electronica and American post-punk. Today, Crammed is seen as one of the most adventurous and avant-garde labels worldwide. 31

Joëlle Dubois Are there any objects you like to surround yourself with while working? Plants are very precious to me. They’re always present in my room and in every piece of art I create. We live in such a digital age, we sometimes forget how important nature actually is. We used to have a lot more trees in cities, for example, but now everything tends to become more industrial. That’s why, in my paintings, I like to contrast new-media related topics with the use of plants.
man. Sometimes I wonder where all of this will take us, and I’m curious as well. Most of us are inseparable from our phones, iPads, computers… which ultimately flattens us as human beings. When I’m walking on the street I try to catch people’s gaze and smile. But when I do, people sometimes look at me like I’m weird. I’m not claiming I’m immune to new media; I also catch myself entangled into it, and it bothers me. That’s why I consider painting and doing things manually as an outlet. You’re doings things, you create something.
Are media and technology turning us into robots? In a way, yes. We live in a world where people almost get run over by cars because they’re trying to catch Pokémons with their phone. I got hooked on the Pokémon game for a while too, even though the app is kind of creepy as it can track your every move on an actual map. Like, your phone knows everything about you, Siri even recognises your voice. They can create a digital world on that tiny screen, and, probably, reality and technology will become even more intertwined in the future. We won’t have any private place any more, and I believe people need their secrets to stay hu-
I also think it’s important to remember it’s all fake in the end. Online we present the best version of ourselves. I have a lot of friends watching a lot of beautiful women online, constantly. We’re surrounded by these perfect creatures, and we forget how many filters they actually use. How can we fight this force? Strong female characters are my heroes. That’s why I use them in my work so often. Women who expose themselves physically, sexu-

You can find a lot of feminist movements on Instagram, for example if you think about the female protesters posting pictures of their bloody period underwear, or the ones painting their armpit hair in flashy colours. The first pictures of these women were removed, but they unchained a se-
ries of online action by women who want to share the same message. I mean, female body hair and period blood are such natural things… Maybe it’s nature that’ll save us all.

A Cyborg Manifesto by Donna Haraway Disclaimer: This isn’t about a book per se; it’s an essay-turned-chapter of a book that is probably better-known than the book itself. I’ve never seen a copy of it myself; everything I know about this essay comes from machines and the artificial intelligence apparatus that we call the internet. Fitting, really. Donna Haraway, professor at the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California and ‘Generally Delightful Person’, penned A Cyborg Manifesto in 1985 to address socialist feminist preoccupations in light of rising neo-liberalism. In her diffuse prose, Haraway tackles the Western patriarchal tenets of dualism that establish tensions between a dominant society and its perceived ‘Other’. The metaphor of the cyborg is used not only to erase the barrier between human and machine, but also between man and woman, effectively nuking traditional feminist stances of hierarchy and identity. A cyborg world might be about lived social and bodily realities in which people are not afraid of their joint kinship with animals and machines, not afraid of permanently partial identities and contradictory standpoints. Yep, not an easy read – not even for those familiar with the concepts that she breaches. Yet the overall sense one gets from Haraway’s writings, and indeed from her lectures and speeches, is one of universal equality, of trans-species fusion. Maybe it’s an effect of her esoteric formulations, or perhaps of her self-deriding sense of humour and infectious laughter, but you can’t help feeling optimistic with people like her who are actively striving for a better, more cohesive world – if only conceptually.

Sleep Andy Warhol, 1963 ‘Amazing turnout, 500 people. Sleep’s first shot, which lasts about 45 minutes, is a close-up of man’s abdomen. You can see him breathing. People start to walk out, some complaining. People getting more and more restless. Shot finally changes to close-up of man’s head. Someone runs up to the screen and shouts in sleeping man’s ear, “WAKE UP!!”. Audience getting bitter, strained. Movie is silent, runs at silent speed. A few people ask for money back. Sign on box office says no refunds. One man pulls me out into outer lobby, doesn’t want to make a scene but asks for money back. I say no. […] “Look you knew you were going to see something strange, unusual, daring, that lasted six hours.” One redfaced guy, very agitated, says I have 30 seconds to give him his money back or he’ll run into the theatre and start a “lynch riot.” “We’ll all come out here and lynch you, buddy!!” […] When 30 seconds were up; he ran back toward the screen. Thoughts of recent football riots in South America. People angry as hell, a mob on the verge of violence. Red-faced guy stomps toward me: “Well, what are you going to do?” “I’ll give out passes for another show.” Over 200 passes given out. Decide to make an announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen. I believe that Sleep was properly advertised. I said in my ads that it was an unusual six-hour movie. You came here knowing that you were going to see something unusual about Sleep and I think you are. I don’t know else I could have said.” Sleep continued. Projectionist kept falling asleep. […] Fifty people were left at the end. In Valerie and her Week of Wonders, Jaromil Jireš adapts a surrealistic story into an even more surrealistic visual experience. In a small idyllic village, we follow a 13-yearold girl on the eve of her blossoming into womanhood. As a result she becomes plagued with bizarre dreams and nightmares, evoking familiar stories such as Alice in Wonderland and Little Red Riding Hood. And speaking of Red Riding Hoods, for the second round we have The Company of Wolves, a unique and visually alluring take on that famous story. Neil Jordan subverts expectations and creates a film brimming with symbolism and allegories that no doubt were influenced by Jaromil Jireš’s work.

Darling is a contemporary dance performance that expresses the dialogue between South-African Moya Michael, born in the violent political setting of Apartheid, and Igor Shyshko from Belarus, who grew up facing the Chernobyl disaster. Though the two share different stories, they have seen their lives similarly influenced by these events, making their encounter almost choreographed.

Among those movements, impressionism, neo-impressionism and symbolism are the ones the man felt the strongest about. Observer and actor of his epoch, Verhaeren is a major character who deserves to be paid homage.

Eraserhead, shot on a modest budget (for Hollywood standards) whilst the virtuoso artist was still studying filmmaking at AFI, is a surrealist cocktail containing a dash of Gogol and a couple of shots of Kafka.

His most seminal film, Deer Hunter, deals with a group of lifelong friends and their experiences in the Vietnam War. It’s the type of war movie that takes its time to develop characters, create mesmerising sequences and not substitute lack of plot with countless explosions and violence. Go see this epic the way it was intended to be viewed: in 35mm on a large screen.

5 Years Subbacultcha Five years ago, on an October evening in 2011, Kasper-Jan and Herlinde Raeman were about to launch the Belgian edition of a subscription model dedicated to promoting upcoming artists. Subbacultcha! (remember the ‘!’?) would give its members first-hand access to a curated agenda of events taking place throughout Belgium. More than 300 concerts, movies, plays and exhibitions, 50 magazines and other weird shit later, it’s time for us to thank you for keeping the community alive.
