SONS Arno - the elusive fourth member of Belgian noiseniks, SONS - considers alternative futures and a four-headed hound. When you were younger, did you always imagine you would perform and play music? Of course, when you start playing an instrument you always dream of being in a band.
and I started jamming together in his Dad’s warehouse for fun. Our first gig was at a Halloween party. I was in a nurse costume, Thomas was a devil, Jens was dressed up as an old lady covered in blood and Robin was a priest. We played ‘Ricochet’ but we didn’t have any lyrics so we just blabbered over the music.
Did you have any other wild dreams about what you wanted to be in the future? When we were younger, both Jens and I were big into cycling. Before we wanted to be rockstars, we wanted to be professional cyclists, but that dream died when we started partying.
How do you have fun as a band on the road and how does that differ from in the studio? On the road, we spend a lot of time in the bus, so a lot of jokes and stories are told. At night, if we’re in a good city, we’ll go to a few bars. We love food so we’ll always look at what the city has to offer. Then at home, we pretty much do the same thing!
What did you imagine for the band when you first formed SONS together? In the beginning, not that much. We didn’t plan to do gigs. Robin

‘Before we wanted to be rockstars, we wanted to be professional cyclists.’ You arrive at the festival grounds early and you’re stranded on the site’s lake with only a fishing rod and some rope. What do you do? Catching fish won’t be an option because they’ll have all died of alcohol poisoning. Probably, try and have a fight with the stick and the rope. Thomas should be a strong swimmer because he’s our drummer, so he could start swimming and he can pull us to the shore by the rope. Team effort... with kudos to Thomas!
You’re stumbling back to the band’s tent at night and stumble onto your perfect afterparty, what does it look like? The perfect music would be the wrong ‘80s metal type; Mötley Crüe and Slayer. Rum and Cokes would be the drink for all four of us. It’s tacky to say but we’ve got a big friend group here in Belgium so if they could all be there that’d be the best. And the guys from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. If SONS was a mythical animal, what would you be and why? Isn’t there a mythical creature like a dog with three heads or something? (Ed. Yes, that would be the underworld creature of Cerberus) Then that dog but with four heads instead of three.

Altin Gün Welcome to the wonderful world of Altin Gün, where traditional Turkish music meets the deliciously psychedelic sounds of the ‘70s. Kitsch, joy, and reverence form the backbone of this rising Amsterdam-based band. Bassist Jasper Verhulst offers a glimpse into their refreshing perspective. How are you? Great! Really excited about everything that’s happening with the band.
band like this for forever. And so did I. When everyone in the band finally came together, we made it possible.
Does it feel good to have the new album out? Yeah, but to be honest I see us more as a live band than an album band. What we really are is a folk band. We started this project because we wanted to play standards and traditional folk songs live. You know, our singer, saz (a stringed instrument), and keyboard player, Erdinc – his parents are Turkish and he grew up with this music. He wanted to start a
You guys really show how versatile folk is – that it can be psychedelic and funky. Thanks! Well, we didn’t invent the style: it was really popular in Turkey in the ‘70s. Just like how folk rock was popular in the UK during that time. Bands like Fairport Convention were taking traditional English music and playing it in their own style, with the sounds of that time. The same thing was happening in Turkey.

‘That’s something I like about Turkish music. It has a certain kitschy-ness.’ To combine that traditional music with ‘70s psychedelia funk rock influences – I think it’s a really nice mix. Really unique. I heard Altın Gün means Golden Day. Why that name? I thought it would be appropriate to have a name that’s positive but also slightly kitschy, because that’s something I like about Turkish music. It has a certain kitschy-ness. Take Baris Manço—he was one of the big-
gest rock stars in the ‘70s, and his repertoire was mostly in the same style as ours. Just playing traditional songs in a funky, psychedelic, ‘70s kind of way. He was really extravagant, with loads of gold rings on his fingers. We’re not gonna dress like that [laughs], but I think that kitschyness is cool. What’s your dream for the band? We just want to keep playing our music for audiences all over the world. What I like most, which we never intended, is that a lot of Turkish people are really happy and proud of what we’re doing. We’re also introducing a lot of people to Turkish music. I’m not saying that we do it the best, or that we invented something new, but I think in a world that makes it hard to be optimistic, the least you can do is create something that makes people happy. •

slowthai Tyron Frampton, aka slowthai, carves a lean, mean figure as lovably gritty as his persona is surreal. Get into his unique brand of Brexit-critiquing punk/hip hop hooliganism now. Punk or grime? Or both? No genres, only music. No boxes, just expression. According to you, ‘the farmers are coming’ – should the city bigwigs be worried? Everyone should be worried. I’m like the joker with a ticking time bomb and in my life the villain always wins. As ‘the king of Northampton’, what’s it like being shot into the global spotlight at a time when Britain is at its littlest? It doesn’t even feel like that for me, but I just gotta say I love anyone and everyone that’s took the time to listen to my stuff. If you don’t fuck with me, keep it moving – and if you do fuck with me, welcome to the family.
How do you speak truth to power while still keeping the party alive? I don’t even know, I just stay real to me. I think about a lot of the shit that happens in my life and society and the world overall but I was raised to keep on keeping on, smile on my face, find truth and happiness in the smaller things because at large we can’t control the world but we can control ourselves. Going wild is serious business – how should we release our inner animals this weekend? Don’t stand around like cow in a field. Feel the music, enjoy the vibe, forget everything, put your phone away, take yourself on a spiritual journey, go fucking mad. •

Interview
Arlo Parks
Interview by Callum McLean Photography by Trent McMinn in London, UK
‘Wise beyond her years’ doesn’t quite do justice to Arlo Parks’ unique proposition. Sure, this 18-year-old Southwest Londoner is a savant soul-star in the making with a poetic bent to boot. But there’s also something understated about the way she carries her intimacies of romance, loss and hangovers. Parks captures both the personal urgencies of teenagedom and a generational malaise, and deftly flips them into pensive, slouching grooves – as if to say ‘this is our lot, might as well settle in’. On the rise to renown and still not out of school, Arlo updates us on Gen Z emo, thematic boozing and toxic relationships. 25
Interview Six months ago you hadn’t released anything official yet, now you’re about to hit the festival circuit and set off on a European tour in autumn. How’s the rollercoaster been so far? It’s been pretty wild. I’d been putting out unofficial demos on SoundCloud for a couple of years, and then it all kind of exploded at once. Which is sick but I am also still at school, so it’s tough balancing the two. It’s my last year now so I’m just doing my exams and then I’m out for good! It’s clear that London is not just your literal home but a spiritual one too. Do you feel attached to any kind of scene there? I don’t think so. I see myself in the generation of artists that don’t fit into a genre or a specific niche. I guess I’m just an Internet kid. There’s a lot of South London jazz and all that – I wish I was cool enough to slot in there, but not quite! I’m just doing my own thing. Well despite that there’s been a lot of focus on you, since Super Sad Generation, as representing some kind bittersweet, Gen Z struggle. What do you feel is special about this moment? Our generation started talking about a lot of things. Social media allows you to connect with a lot of people, but that openness also brings a lot of anxieties. You’ve been compared to Billie Eilish and a type of teen goth image, but I’m not sure I see it.
26
Arlo Parks ‘Going out with your mates is such a central part of being a teenager, so I guess that’s kind of subconsciously infiltrated my writing.’
I feel there is a little bit of that angst in my music, and I talk about quite dark things, but I don’t go into the dark aesthetic. I’m into emo – and I say that loosely, as in emotional. I mean I did listen to My Chemical Romance when I was younger, not so much anymore. You do have that lyric in ‘Romantic Garbage’: ‘I wanna put my problems inside you’. Is that a pick-up line or a threat? I feel like it’s neither… It was more about when you like someone so much that you start to overshare and trust someone to the point where you talk to them about your problems.
27
Interview I noticed that every track of your EP mentions getting wasted. Is this a running theme? Are you working through the moods? Going out with your mates is such a central part of being a teenager, so I guess that’s kind of subconsciously infiltrated my writing. A lot of the problems I’ve seen among my generation have also involved some kind of substance abuse and getting fucked up, so I guess I internalized that too. Especially in London and England in general, there’s quite a big drinking culture. In ‘Cola’, you hit back at a soured romance: ‘take your orchids elsewhere’. Did someone actually bring you orchids? It happened to my mate. I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced this, when you’re in a relationship and someone does something silly and they just give you flowers to make up for it, and they’re like, ‘Oh I love you’ That doesn’t fix anything, you’re still an arsehole. I can’t believe people still give flowers in this day and age. Yeah, and they’re expensive, man! I went to a flower shop and I was like, ‘Jeez, no, I’m not doing that…’ With so many memories of getting messed up in parks and summer romances, Down The Rabbit Hole should be a perfect fit. Where will we find you lost in the forest this weekend? I’ve never been to a festival in my life. I’m excited about the surreal, psychedelic stuff. I’m a nature fiend, so I’m gonna wander through the forest for sure. Also you’re gonna find me moshing to slowthai. That’s for sure.

Agar Agar Interview by Zofia Ciechowska Photography by Studio Racket in Paris, France
Agar Agar
Meet Agar Agar, the experimental synth pop duo from Paris named after a tasteless, odorless plant-based gelatin alternative that pools at the bottom of petri dishes, or turns vegan pudding extra thick and luscious. Clara Cappagli and Armand Bultheel crossed paths in the expansive studios of art school, where their musical sensibilities fused into Agar Agar’s shape-shifting electronic sound, ranging from witty futuristic beats to swelling melodramatic disco. At their core is a childlike delight in the absurd, the surreal and the unknown – pulsating through their improvised lyrics, grinning dogs and cracked eggs painted on their album art. After the rapt reception of their debut album, The Dog and the Future, Agar Agar are up for another round of touring before entering their next phase of writing. We sat down with Clara to learn what brings the duo together, how to sing to dogs and the story of her grandfather’s harmonica.
How have you changed since your art school days, and what remains the same? The biggest change is that our music turned into a job, and I don’t mean that in a pejorative way. It became our lives. We’re not students anymore. We enjoy
it just as much as back then; that hasn’t changed. It’s really just about having fun with music. Your individual musical backgrounds differ, you come from a DIY punk background and Armand has been in electronic

Interview ‘If my future dog is not a music lover, then I don’t think things will work out between us.’ music. Tell me more about what unites you as Agar Agar. I don’t know if I can put it into words. Armand and I went to the musical conservatoire when we were kids. When you leave such a traditional, strict institution, you just want to break all the rules that you’ve been taught! I come from a punk background. I was trying to scream a lot, invent different personalities and narratives with my voice and play guitar. When we began playing together, it was Armand’s first experience of working with a singer. For him, it was crazy having a vocals on his instrumentals. When we improvised and felt the energy, we kept going. I would have never made that kind of music if I hadn’t met Armand. I didn’t know anything about synthesizers either. Armand spent hours teaching me everything. What
unites us is that we learn new things from each other, that’s why it works. What makes you laugh? We are like little silly doggies! We’re both very childish inside. Speaking of dogs, if you could say one sentence to a dog and know they would understand, what would you say? I wouldn’t say one sentence! I’d sing some very long, repetitive yogi mantras to my dog, all day long! I used to have a dog when I was little and I would sing everything to him all the time. Now, I don’t have a dog, but if my future dog is not a music lover, then I don’t think things will work out between us. You went away to a remote place to paint and make your last album. Where are you going next? What do you look for in a place

that you want to create in? We felt like we needed to be in a place that neither of us knew. We chose to rent a house deep in the forest, not far from my parents’ home in Biarritz. We were in a place that felt very remote and unknown to us both. It it was the first time we composed music together in an environment like that. It really made us get to know each other better, and compose better music. For the next album, we
are planning on going somewhere again, we just don’t know where yet. I hear you get into rabbit holes, playing The Sims a lot when you were making your last record. What’s your new obsession? Armand is really into looking for empty warehouses in Paris right now. When he finds one, he enters and locks himself inside and waits for the cops to show up. He’s found two so far. I’m
33
34
Agar Agar obsessed with books. Reading long, bulky books feels very extravagant when touring when you’re traveling light. When I returned to Paris, I said to myself: ‘dude, you need to read a book that’s going to take at least two weeks to create more stories in your head!’ So I picked up El Salvaje by the Mexican writer, Gabriel Arriaga.
felt like a long time, they were friendly. Suddenly, they took my bag and ran off. Inside was my grandfather’s harmonica. I never got it back. It was my only one, and I was still learning how to play at the time. I’ve made peace with its loss now.
What instruments are you adding to your repertoire? While we’re talking instruments, can you tell me the story of your grandfather’s harmonica? We’ve talked about adding some more ambient chords, maybe adding to our synth set up, but it’s still going to sound like the Agar Agar you know. We like the way we sound. The story of my grandfather’s harmonica is really sad. Seven years ago, I was waiting at a bus station in Bordeaux round midnight. I was kinda drunk. Three completely average girls came up and talked to me for what
Who inspires you? Describe the people you try to surround yourselves with. Our entire tour team is the greatest I’ve ever experienced. Our music label, Cracki Records and booking agency, Pedro Booking are from the same friend group. We feel like a big family. The history of our band is not just about Armand and I, it’s also about them. I feel very blessed to have been part of so many bands thanks to this community. I feel deeply connected to them. It’s nice to do what I love with the people who I love and respect.

Cheekbones and a flattop. Heavy eyeshadow, blush worn like warpaint. Sunglasses that bounce back every question you might have for the woman behind them. But take the sunglasses off and her eyes still won’t give you an answer. This woman is all smirks and sneers. She’s all legs and angles. Miss Grace Jones owns everything she lays her eyes on, she turns everything she sets foot on into a stage. She turns complete control into a performance in itself. I’m convinced there must be a motor in there somewhere, and no button to switch it off. But Grace Jones is no machine. She’s a woman. I keep piecing the puzzle of Grace Jones’s persona together, finding clues as to who she is in her stage performances, her modeling days, Studio 54 in the decade of decadence, the hot island of Jamaica, the domineering man that cast a shadow over her childhood. Who is Grace Jones, really? There’s this thing where we confuse “emotional” with “sentimental”. “Weepy”, even. There’s this thing where we view emotions as inherently female. There’s this thing where we say “emotional” but we actually mean “sensitive” or “vulnerable”, as if aggressiveness and violence, which we associate with men, aren’t pure emotion. Watching Jean-Paul Goude transform Jones into something part car, part animal in a 1980s Citroën commercial, I doubt you would register Grace Jones as being emotional. Behind the wheel, it’s Jones again, now in her human form, part composed and part ferocious. Watching her scream at the camera, a glint of humor in her heavily made-up eyes and in her purple lipstick grin, I fail to find the right words to describe her. She’s not angry, exactly. She’s not savage, as the title of the commercial would have you think. Is she passionate? Yes, but I don’t want to use a word that’s tainted by the realm of romance novels. Is she driven? Yes, but calling her that when she’s actually in a car would be a little too on the nose. (Insert smiley face.) Is she sensitive? Sentimental? Stereotypically female? No. She is not. But she dares us to reexamine all of those words.
37
Grace Jones ‘Take the sunglasses off and her eyes still won’t give you an answer. This woman is all smirks and sneers.’ If we can’t fit her into language, we’ll just have to make up some new words. I find clues in her music, in which the beat is like a pulse; the lifeforce that keeps it going. I find clues in her movies, in which she, without fail, plays the part of the villain, a part that she, all laser eyes and aggression, so evidently enjoys sinking her teeth into. (How many men have confessed to me that they are thoroughly afraid of her?) I find clues in that scene in that perfect little documentary by Sophie Fiennes, called Bloodlight and Bami, in which we see Jones dancing till dawn in a New York club – not so much having a good time but in a trance. The beat, a pulse. I find clues in that famous clip of her slapping a TV host, for apparently no reason at all. ‘He turned his back to me!’ she laments. And yes, how could he? And yet there is vulnerability in Grace Jones. There is something soft and scared behind those sunglasses, the laser eyes. It’s the girl she used to be, back in Jamaica, that they called Beverly. If Jones is the sum of her parts, those parts do not consist of a machine and an animal, male and female, they consist of a protector and something that needs protection. We might not get to see the girl she used to be, the Beverly in Miss Grace Jones, but she’s in there. She’s that motor that drives her. The pulse, the heartbeat. Cheekbones and a flattop. Make-up worn like warpaint. A silhouette so recognizable she doesn’t even need an introduction. She doesn’t need an excuse for her many angles, her iconic evasion, her dust. She steps on the gas. •

Music Programme By Callum McLean and Derek Robertson Altın Gün 14:30 –15:30 // Teddy Widder
Editors 23:30 – 01:00 // Hotot In 2005, Birmingham’s Editors purveyed a unique sort of angst. Postpunk menace and bittersweet yearning characterized their piercing guitar leads and frontman Tom Smith’s vocals – at turns juddering and elongated like dark, stretched taffy. Six albums in, forays into dance-pop and stadium rock have matured this indie staple’s broad, deserved appeal.
Born out of hours spent rummaging around in Istanbul’s second-hand record stores, Altın Gün have one clear purpose – to reimagine Turkish folk standards and classics, injecting them with a healthy dose of funk and psychedelia. The result is an infectious, energetic mix full of feel-good vibes and summer joy. Read the interview on page 18. Borokov Borokov 15:30 – 16:30 // Future Fuzzy Field There is something delightful about the musical madness that these four Belgian scamps unleash. Punk, global pop, hardcore, HI-NRG disco, lounge music, acid-rave and performance art are all swirled together in a rush of beats and limbs: ultimate party music.
Ezra Collective 18:30 – 19:30 // Fuzzy Lop Foremost among London’s crossover jazzers, Ezra Collective fuse deft improvisation with a youthful irreverence for genre. Besides collaborations with Jorja Smith and Loyle Carner, this five-piece’s contemporary tastes shine through on new record You Can’t Steal My Joy, swallowing hip hop, Latin and soul – all fodder for pure fun, and not a fedora in sight. Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes 14:30 – 15:30 // Fuzzy Lop
dEUS plays The Ideal Crash 19:30 – 20:30 // Hotot The cult band other cult bands love to name check, for 28 years dEUS have revelled in their unique brand of art rock. For the 20th anniversary of their magnum opus, one of the great indie albums – The Ideal Crash – they’ve decided to tour it in its entirety as they gear up for their eighth album.

With three albums in four years, former Gallows frontman Frank Carter has continued to be one of punk rock’s most prolific and visceral voices. A self-styled ‘punk rock renegade’,
Friday, 5 July there’s plenty of personal and political catharsis mixed in with his lip-sneering attitude and blitzkrieg tunes, making him poet laureate for the disenfranchised. FULCO 17:30 – 18:30 // Future Fuzzy Field Having played in jazz bands, krautrock outfits and the madness that was BeraadGeslagen, Dutch-Belgian musician Fulco Ottervanger brings that all together in his first solo foray, which blends Deep South soul, indie and defiant outsider motifs into music befitting his eclectic past. George FitzGerald 00:00 – 01:00 // Fuzzy Lop
truly is a legend. Her stone cold classic hits – think ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ and ‘Pull Up To The Bumper Baby’ – remain as zesty and fresh as ever, as does her outré – and typically bonkers – stage show. Read our Grace Jones story on page 36. Job Sifre 03:00 – 04:30 // Fuzzy Lop With a reputation for taking parties to the next level, this young Dutch DJ has already gained something of a cult following, with ties to Red Light Radio, De School and Dekmantel. He blends disparate sounds such as EBM, new wave, synth-pop, industrial and experimental electro into an intoxicating, and danceable, brew. Liniker e os Caramelows 12:45 – 13:45 // Fuzzy Lop
Since 2015’s Fading Love catalogued George FitzGerald’s dancefloor disillusionment, he’s leaned a little clubwards again. Last year’s All That Must Be still headbops from the bedroom, but retraces its plaintive songcraft against the drops and breakdowns of his DJ origins – altogether undulating, festival-ready electronic pop.
Whether or not you understand Portuguese, the force of this act will unseat you. Vigorously embracing her black, trans womanhood against the conservative forces of Brazil, Liniker Barros and band rock out (jazzing equal parts Latin and contemporary soul) with fists raised. Luscious, loud and proud.
Grace Jones 22:30 – 23:45 // Teddy Widder 70 years young and still going strong, disco and new wave icon Grace Jones

Music Programme Low 16:30 – 17:30 // Fuzzy Lop One of the original (and best) ‘slowcore’ bands, Low are alternative indie royalty. Delicate, austere, and hypnotic, for over 20 years their sparse music played with tension and drama, and yet last year’s Double Negative was a reinvention: a twisted, glitchy howl of rage at the disintegration of modern society and the state of the world at large.
Peaking Lights 19:30 – 20:30 // Future Fuzzy Field Husband-wife duo Indra Dunis and Aaron Coyes are both pioneers and music veterans. Over 12 years and 8 albums they’ve delighted with their dubby krautrock-inspired post-electronica, psychedelic pop and warped house, true originals who’ve never rested on their laurels. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever 20:30 – 21:30 // Fuzzy Lop
Matt Corby 17:30 – 18:30 // Hotot
Freewheelin’ rock ’n’ rock and infectious jangle punk have made this Australian quartet stand out from the crowd, a throwback to when indie ruled alternative radio and could genuinely catapult bands into superstardom. Alas, those times are no more, but RBCF have the tunes and the swagger to transport you back to better days.
This crooner carves a much cleaner-cut sound than his bearded-dude persona would suggest. Pitch perfect, Corby’s honeyed voice sometimes betrays his beginnings on Australia’s Got Talent – except he now uses his powers for good, deftly throwing delicate James Blake-isms, soulful jazzing and looping tricks into the mix. Mattheis (Live) 23:15 – 00:00 // Future Fuzzy Field A studio wizard in every sense, the Rotterdam producer and DJ is bringing his lush, ambient washes and downtempo techno to the stage. But this is no chill out zone; there are enough hints of IDM and trance to make his music groove too.
Ronnie Flex & Deuxperience 15:30 – 16:30 // Hotot
NL hip hop heavyweight Ronnie Flex has grown to be a star that’s somehow

Friday, 5 July De Sluwe Vos & Sjamsoedin 21:30 – 22:30 // Future Fuzzy Field A double act born on the dancefloors of Amsterdam, Robert Vosmeijer and Sjam Sjamsoedin craft house, disco, techno and electro into bangers like ‘Never Know’, the smash hit currently tearing up club land. Proper dance music for the hardcore heads.
everything at once: trap and pop, loud and gentle, absurd and real, introspective and swaggering. Flanked by seasoned musical compatriots Deuxperience, Flex’s flexibility slays festivals – whether or not ‘Drank en Drugs’ are your fuel. Sam Fender 18:30 – 19:30 // Teddy Widder Bright and young – you have to be to win both the Brit Critics’ Choice Award and BBC’s Sound of 2018 poll. Yet, for a chart-bothering new artist with arena-filling anthems, Sam Fender makes music both wiser and darker than his peers’. Though singalong-worthy to a tee, these tunes tell of Northeastern blight and rock sharp-edged.
Tomo Como Rey 16:30 – 17:30 // Teddy Widder The Popular Party is the latest record from Chilean 11-piece Tomo Como Rey, and a pretty good description of their musical modus operandi. Their catchy anthems blend rock, punk and classic cumbia into something they call Nueva Cumbia Chilena, a wild and wide-eyed mix propelled by raucous brass, ridiculous drums and catchy choruses that’s impossible to resist.
Skepta 20:30 – 21:30 // Teddy Widder
De Staat 21:30 – 22:30 // Hotot
The undisputed King of Grime, Skepta is unique among British rappers for crossing over but never selling out. Beloved by Drake and Kanye, and winner of the Mercury Prize for 2016’s Konnichiwa, our Skeppy’s beats nevertheless stay raw like his lines stay London – though no one at home or abroad can match them for wit nor grit. Boy better know!
Over seven albums, Dutch alternative quintet De Staat have shifted from off-kilter, psychedelic indie to a heavier, more intense dance-based sound, a move that’s won them buckets of acclaim, awards and support slots with the likes of Muse. Come embrace their oddball songs and joyous moshing.

Music Programme. Friday 5 July Tom Trago 01:00 – 03:00 // Fuzzy Lop Beloved local Amsterdam DJ and producer Tom Trago has been honing his craft for years. As a teenager he would play in coffeeshops for hours, an education that’s led him to the colourful, emotionally-rich, synthesizer-heavy house and techno with which he has become one of Europe’s top electronic artists and household name with institutions like De School, Dekmantel and Boiler Room. Tshegue 22:30 – 23:15 // Fuzzy Lop
Tshegue are a meeting of minds, genres and cultures. Blending afropunk with tribal garage rock and Latin flourishes, the duo – French-Cuban producer Nicolas Dacunha and Congolese singer Faty Sy Savanet – have perfected a wicked brew of intoxicating rhythms, colourful melodies and trance-inducing jams that will have a magical effect on your hips and feet.

Music Programme Afra 23:30 – 01:30 // Fuzzy Lop
Afra is an old school maestro, DJing only with vinyl. Backing from the likes of Is Burning, Red Light Radio and Operator Radio and years of crate digging have given Afra Amba de Boer plenty of source material to blend into dark but danceable grooves, a blend of booty, trance, rave and old school Detroit house and techno.
Balthazar. Powered by co-frontmen Jinte Deprez and Maarten Devoldere, there’s plenty of twinkly keyboards, swanky horns and languid bass sprinkled throughout their slinky, sunset jams, particularly on recent album Fever – an album on which they purposefully ‘turned the temperature up’. Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles 13:30 – 14:30 // Hotot
Amy Root 19:30 – 20:30 // Future Fuzzy Field
They may be classically-trained musicians, but the music created by burgeoning Dutch producers Lukas Amer and Sjoerd Huissoon owes far more to hardware synths and downtempo techno. Melancholic, thoughtful electronica is their trademark, with splashes of world music giving everything a diverse, eclectic feel. Balthazar 17:30 – 18:30 // Hotot Not many are as adept as groove-laden indie pop as Belgian maestros
Keyboard sorcerer Cory Henry has commanded a mighty reputation as a member of Snarky Puppy and solo performer. Incredulous faces often crinkling in disgusted awe at his hyper-expressive play. With his own band The Funk Apostles he presents a warmer funk palate, steeped in rich tones of Prophet and Moog. Daniel Avery 03:00 – 04:30 // Fuzzy Lop From a residency at London’s infamous club Fabric to worldwide acclaim, Avery’s subdued dancefloor fillers and subtle amalgamation of acid house, techno and electro has become the standard for thoughtful, intelligent dance music you can still dance to in clubs and festival stages across the planet today.
56
Saturday, 6 July The Hacker 01:30 – 03:00 // Fuzzy Lop As The Hacker, Michel Amato has had a seismic effect on electronic music. Alongside detours into techno, EBM and sci-fi tinged new wave, he was one of the founding fathers of electroclash and released some of the early 2000’s most acclaimed – and smart – dance music. HENGE 17:30 – 18:30 // Future Fuzzy Field There’s cosmic, and then there’s HENGE. A self-styled ‘band of beings from the far corners of the galaxy’ who travelled to earth on a spaceship called MUSHROOM ONE, their spiritual psych rock and intergalactic space rave is meant to bring salvation and awaken a deeper consciousness. Jonathan Wilson 14:30 – 15:30 // Fuzzy Lop
Immersed in rock royalty, Jonathan Wilson humbly transcends eras. The stoner lullabies of 2011’s Gentle Spirit spoke to Wilson’s roots in LA’s mythic Laurel Canyon – a sound updated since directing Roger Waters’ recent tour and producing two albums for Father John Misty. Yet, pepped with synth and sunshine, Wilson’s recent output still rocks soft, dude.
Kamasi Washington 16:30 – 17:30 // Teddy Widder
Bandleader and saxophonist Kamasi Washington connects the dots between the spiritual jazz of Sun Ra and the politicised urgency of Kendrick Lamar, on whose To Pimp a Butterfly he made his name. Washington’s latest, 2018’s critical smash Heaven and Earth, defines his versatility: an astral traveller with two feet on the ground, and soul to boot. Kampire 21:30 – 22:30 // Future Fuzzy Field A key player in the Nyege Nyege scene in Uganda’s musical underground, Kampire’s bass-heavy music is a joyous mix of traditional pan-African rhythms and sounds, and Western electronica. Just as importantly, it’s also a space where peace, respect and tolerance reign supreme. Lewis Capaldi 15:30 – 16:30 // Hotot A nomination for the Brit Critics’ Choice Award and several prominent support slots with the likes of Sam Smith and Niall Horan have catapulted singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi towards global stardom – ‘Someone You Loved’ has already amassed a staggering 160 million plays on Spotify. Come

algorithms and player pianos on 2018’s ambitious Re: Member, Arnalds’ gentle minimalism still swoons at vast scales, while also soothing on a level that’s both intimate and elemental.
Mahalia 20:30 – 21:30 // Fuzzy Lop
R&B’s latest star has long been destined for stardom. Having signed to a major label at only 13, Mahalia Burkmar has since racked up millions of streams and critical acclaim. With dreamy, melodic neo-soul and her rich, velvety voice and conversational writing style mark her as a very special talent indeed.
Parquet Courts 20:30 – 21:30 // Teddy Widder From rag-tag, slacker rock stoners to cerebral indie stalwarts, it’s been quite a journey for this US quintet. Six albums into their career, literate, savvy, rock, skittish punk and fizzing guitars have marked them out as restless creatives, and brought their rough charm and catchy anthems the wide audience they so richly deserve. The Roots 19:30 – 20:30 // Hotot
Maribou State 14:30 – 15:30 // Teddy Widder Remixers to the stars – Kelis, Fatboy Slim and Lana Del Rey, to be more precise – these two Hertfordshire boys know their way around a vocal. Their slick, undulating electronic pop nestles warmly around tightly-wound hooks, whether of recurring collaborator Holly Walker or festival fellows Khruangbin. Sunny day panacea for festival-worn ears. Ólafur Arnalds 18:30 – 19:30 // Teddy Widder As both a BAFTA-winning composer and one half of techno experimentalists Kiasmos, Iceland’s Ólafur Arnalds thinks big and sounds bigger. Duelling
As a hip hop band who were equally influenced by jazz and soul, The Roots have always been a more cerebral alternative to mainstream rap, using their musical virtuosity to explore Blackness and struggle. Now on their 12th album, their message remains as potent as ever, and their influence on music undeniable. RY X 12:30 – 13:30 // Teddy Widder Quietly intense, raw and emotional – the devotional songcraft of Australian

Saturday, 6 July artist Ry Cuming explores heartache and intimacy, the minimalist beauty of his compositions wielding an uncanny amount of power. Gentle, bustling beats, skeletal piano lines and haunting vocals lie behind some of the most gorgeous, affecting music you’ll hear all summer. Catch his meditation concert at 11:00 on Sunday at Teddy Widder. Sampa the Great 12:45 – 13:30 // Fuzzy Lop ‘How you supposed to be black Down Under?’ Winning the Australian Music Prize for her 2017 mixtape, Zambian-born rapper Sampa Tembo is both celebratory and unflinching in her socially conscious flows. Set against lush neo-soul arrangements, her unique voice resonates wide and deep. Sho Madjozi 22:30 – 23:30 // Fuzzy Lop
Maya Wegerif’s stardom spans global and pan-African. Since her 2012 poem ‘Why You Talk So White?’ spread viral from an NYC basement, she turned to rap, spitting Zulu, Swahili and her native Tsonga. Megahit ‘Huku’ set the Sho Madjozi template with Wegerif fusing South African gqom and hip hop for maximum dancefloor effect.
slowthai 18:30 – 19:30 // Fuzzy Lop
Hailed as ‘Britain’s most compelling new MC’, Tyron Frampton’s hip hop and grime hybrid is caustic and abrasive, reflective of hard times and the tough estate where he grew up. Yet it’s also filled with hope, with his visceral live shows celebrating life and the people that make it great. Read the interview on page 22. SONS 16:30 – 17:30 // Fuzzy Lop With performances at Rock Werchter, Iceland Airwaves and Eurosonic under the belts already, Antwerp-based SONS have had quite the impact in the 18 months they’ve been together. But then so does their music, a clattering rush of garage punk full of pummelling drums, raucous guitars and a rabid energy that demands some full on moshing. Read the interview on page 14. Thom Yorke – Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes 22:30 – 23:45 // Teddy Widder The twitchy prince of weirdo pop, everyone’s favourite Creep returns to the stage with this all-star line-up. Joining Yorke are Nigel Godrich (producer and ‘sixth member’ of Radio-

head), AV guru Tarik Barri and cellist-producer Oliver Coates. Together, Yorke’s solo work – digitally eerie, sharply vulnerable – will be rendered in dramatic live visuals. Unmissable. Underworld 23:45 – 01:00 // Hotot
Though best known for iconic Trainspotting anthem ‘Born Slippy’, Underworld’s impression on dance pop culture goes well beyond their ‘90s heyday. Musically directing 2012’s London Olympics opening ceremony cemented their status as rave statesmen, but that’s taken no bite from their drum-and-synth fireworks today – nor frontman Karl Hyde’s gratuitous onstage cavorting. Vampire Weekend 21:30 – 22:30 // Hotot Six years is a long time to be away, but judging by the first few singles, Ezra Koenig and co’s ultra cute indie pop has lost none of its wit or charm since ‘A-Punk’. As bright and bouncy as ever, their music remains the perfectly vehicle for Koenig’s wry tales and jaunty storytelling.

Robbert van der Bildt and Boris Acket’s dreamy, ambient sets are completely improvised, each challenging the other to wring new soundscapes from their battery of synths, drum machines and other electronic frippery. The hypnotic, delicate results are perfect little moments of calm in an otherwise frazzled world.

folk and electronica into lush, glacial soundscapes. No surprise then that she’s mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Kate Bush and Björk. Beirut 17:45 – 18:45 // Hotot
Not many bands would name themselves after the substance you get from boiling red algae or make a concept record based on dog memes, but then not many bands are as madcap – or creative – as Agar Agar. Striking synth-pop and arty, surreal soundscapes complete the image of future-pop outsiders defiantly following their own creative urges. Read the interview on page 30. Amber Arcades 14:30 – 15:30 // Fuzzy Lop Over two albums and a number of EPs, the breezy, dreamy indie pop of Dutch singer-songwriter Annelotte de Graaf has charmed and delighted many. All gloriously uplifting choruses and delightful melodies, there’s a zest and bounce to her music that imparts a warm glow and the feeling that summer will never end.
Since 2006’s breakthrough Gulag Orkestar, Zach Condon’s globetrotting indie pop has feasted on French chanson, Balkan folk and Sicilian funeral music, but all the while sounding distinctively Beirut. Perhaps it’s the raggedy instrumentation, or the way it rubs against the quavering trill of Condon’s voice. Whichever, its sanguine sunniness still pleases. Benny Sings 12:45 – 13:30 // Fuzzy Lop
AURORA 16:45 – 17:45 // Teddy Widder From Stavanger, Norway, comes the latest Scandinavian pop sensation – Aurora Aksnes, aka AURORA. Famed for her quirky sensibility and dreamy, emotional pop, her songs are catchy and direct, blending elements of
Dordrecht’s chief singer-songwriter makes soft, unassuming pop to disarm. Over 15 years writing for film, his music pitter-patters quietly into your consciousness, then refuses to leave. Sunday, 7 July Bruxas 15:30 – 16:15 // Future Fuzzy Field
Is there anything Jacco Garnder can’t do? Alongside Nic Mauskoviç and Tienson Smeets, Bruxas is his tropical house supergroup, where bongo grooves, technicolour synths and Latin American rhythms combine to create something cool, modern and utterly fabulous, the perfect match for the Future Fuzzy Field. The Comet is Coming 20:15 – 21:15 // Fuzzy Lop This outfit are so far out, they’re interstellar. Reaching way beyond jazz’s cutting edge, their Mercury-nominated sound supercharges the cosmic spirituality of Sun Ra with deep, dark veins of psych rock, funk and dance music. Headed by sax-superstar Shabaka Hutchings, these are the pipers of the apocalypse, and it’s gonna be a party.
Dâm-Funk (DJ Set) 23:00 – 00:30 // Fuzzy Lop Equal parts futurist and traditionalist, Damon Riddick lives and breathes the funk. On keys and vocals, his freakouts triangulate sounds from the West Coast to P-funk and outer space. But as a selector, Dâm-Funk’s archival passions let loose, crisscrossing the squiggliest grooves in funk, disco and house, gravitating interplanetary asses to floors. David August 14:45 – 15:45 // Teddy Widder Dancefloors breed more than euphoria, especially if you’re wunderkind David August. While his much-hyped earlier releases digested club culture pensively – boshing nevertheless – August now deals in lighter strokes of ambient, psychedelia and even goth. As for his hyper-ambitious live shows, expect ambrosia for the head, not the feet. Donny Benét 16:15 – 17:15 // Fuzzy Lop
Cosmic Force 21:15 – 22:00 // Future Fuzzy Field Force by name, force by nature. Blending ‘80s electro funk, retro synths and disco motifs, Utrecht legend Ben Saander creates intoxicating tunes that sounds both familiar yet futuristic and are impossible not to get down to.
Several years spent performing Tom Jones covers and disco classics in Las Vegas has stood Australian Donny Benét in good stead. With tongue only marginally in cheek, his post-disco stylings and modern take on Ita-

Flavian Berger 17:15 – 18:15 // Future Fuzzy Field The French DJ and producer is a sonic adventurer, traversing soundscapes of drowsy electronica and madcap, krautrock-infused psychedelica with equal aplomb. Join him on his travels and let his music excite your brain as much as your limbs.
Jordan Rakei 18:15 – 19:15 // Fuzzy Lop
Foals 19:45 – 20:45 // Hotot
Few indie-rock bands from the aughts remain, but with their stadium-sized ambition and swaggering tunes, UK quartet Foals still sound like they’re ready to conquer the world. Witness their new release, part one of a double concept album. It’s as imperious and hook-laden as anything they’ve ever done.
From NZ and Oz to the UK, this soul-gentleman’s star is rising even faster than his music soars. Since a Grammy-nominated collaboration with Disclosure and signing to indie giant Ninja Tune, Rakei has proved his salt twice over on two hyper-ambitious albums. Spellbinding, their string-strewn harmonies paint a figure as melancholic as he is silky smooth. Khruangbin 15:45 – 16:45 // Hotot
Janelle Monáe 21:45 – 23:00 // Hotot Alongside her android alter-egos, musician and actress Janelle Monáe has consistently boasted the theatricality and pop experimentalism of the ever-iconic Prince, with whom she also collaborated. After two astounding
66
An alchemical miracle, Khruangbin’s formula is far more than the sum of its parts. Riffing on the grainy Thai funk records partly inspiring their name, this Houston three-piece’s gospel and soul roots add a slinky vocality to their largely instrumental work. Throw in
Sunday, 7 July surf and psych guitars and you have yourself a heady brew.
Robyn 20:45 – 21:45 // Teddy Widder
LP 13:45 – 14:45 // Hotot There’s a heavy pop sensibility to the songs of Laura Pergolizzi, AKA LP, which makes perfect sense given she’s written for the likes of Cher, Rihanna and Christina Aguilera. But the euphoric, intimate indie of recent record Heart To Mouth deals with love, loss and heartbreak – universal themes that LP addresses with poignancy and unflinching honesty. Niels Broos 19:15 – 20:15 // Future Fuzzy Field Formerly a keyboardist in cult ensemble the Kyteman Orchestra, Niels Broos has since worked with the likes of Binkbeats, Jameszoo and Daedelus, lending his jazz and hip hop wizardry and dexterity to improv shows and heady, creative flights of musical fancy.
Over three decades, Robyn has not only defined Scandipop – with every other new Nordic artist dubbed ‘the new Robyn’ – but also much of modern pop’s landscape. So her long-awaited return with 2018’s Honey both sated and defied expectations; its pristine melodic power softened with restrained production and lyrical melancholy. Matured, today’s Robyn only packs a sharper punch. Rosalía 18:45 – 19:45 // Teddy Widder
Orpheu the Wizard 02:00 – 04:00 // Fuzzy Lop Orpheu’s wizardry might often play a supporting role in his Amsterdam scene, but his selection goes unmatched. Besides close links to Dekmantel and Rush Hour, his co-founding of Red Light Radio has injected as much energy into the city as hidden gems into his legendary sets. Expect cuts deep, global and eclectic.
Rosalía is the flamenco crossover star no one asked for but everyone wants. Attracting collaborators from Latin megastar J Balvin to Pharrell and James Blake, this Barcelonan’s voice breaks hearts and boundaries – melding studied melancholia with R&B swagger and wacko production on her 2018 breakthrough El Mal Querer. ¡Ay, Sí!

Music Programme. Sunday 7 July Sassy J 00:30 – 02:00 // Fuzzy Lop
Forward thinking electronica and analogue sounds have fired the 20-year-career of Swiss-born DJ, producer, and true pioneer Sassy J. Shifting moods and grooves are her calling cards, as are tribal influences and an eclectic, unhurried approach to mixing. Silent State ft. RY X 11:00 – 12:00 // Teddy Widder Silent State will be hosting a meditation concert guided by the melancholic musings of RY X and Michelle de Bruijn. Sofi Tukker 12:45 – 13:45 // Teddy Widder
There’s a joyful madness about NYC duo Sofi Tukker that truly manifests itself live. EDM thrash, thudding bass, earworm guitar riffs, unhinged mayhem makes their gorgeous mess vibrate with energy and totally unmissable. Brash, outlandish, sassy – Sofi Tukker are all that and more.

COSMIC / AFROFUTURISM ADVENTURES / CUTTING EDGE
Follow in the footsteps of Afrofuturist visionary Sun Ra and enter a whole new dimension. Welcome, earthling, to the Future Fuzzy Field. Disembark from your spaceship and uncover this interstellar world. Ancient Egyptian-influenced outfits and radical cosmic discovery collide at full force, spawning a planet made for awe-inspiring performances. positively astral acts and performances. Groundbreaking musicians, producers, DJs and poets can be found here. Inspired by Sun Ra’s sci-fi film on space travel and black emancipation, Pretvormer introduce Space is The Place: a place for pioneering cosmic insight and artistic reverie. Create flamboyant fashion statements using recycled craft supplies and stage mystical scenes fit for Ra’s interstellar, peace-loving planet. Everyday from 12:00 – 21:00. ‘There’s no limit to the things that you can do/There’s no limit to the things that you can be.’ Hurling through space at light speed: legendary jazz pioneer and philosopher Sun Ra’s radical vision is alive on these grounds.

Theme Party Experiments
SILENCE / SURF / INTIMATE DIY / THEME PARTY
If ‘the weirder, the better’ are words to live by, then Porto-Parties x Desperados is about to become your Nirvana. To infinity and beyond, these audience-run theme parties take absurdity and rave ambition to cosmic proportions. Hosts are given two hours on the floor, professional support and no limits when it comes to the theme, playlist, outfits, decorations and door policy. Porto-Parties have upgraded to a tunnel tent this year, giving each party three times the capacity. One porto party at a time, twice as strong. All party experiments are fuelled by Desperados – rock up to make your tequila-powered party dreams come true. Find the party schedule on the app.
Dip your toes into the cool water, conquer the lake or just sizzle away along the waterfront. Grab a surfboard, raft or boat at the Surf Shack while the sun’s out and float off into the glistening water. The perfect spot to watch the sunset, made even more sublime by the audio visual installation by Tim Hoefnagel – zonder titel, 2019. A wooden cathedral without a roof, made out of organ pipes and stained glass windows that move to form a kinetic kaleidoscope. As the sun sets, The Greenhouse by Mascotte will flow with your vibe: part chilled out hang out spot, part afterhours beach club.

Side Programme Teddy Widder Yard The Finer Stuff
Let the taste and aroma of fine whisky linger at Dewar’s Scotch Egg Club, a legacy owed to Tommy Dewar, the legendary whisky baron and, curiously, world-respected chicken breeder. Step into the roaring ‘20s when you enter the spiegeltent, where fine drinks flow, the staff are sharply dressed and ladies ‘n’ gents dance to the ragtime and jazzy sounds of the 1920s and ‘30s – music provided by Natty Bo, Natty’s Solid Four and The Red Right Hand DJ Gang. Think: Peaky Blinders meets festival bustle.
WHISKY / ROARING ‘20S VINYL / MERCHANDISE

Tred these murky waters carefully, kid, you’re a long way from home. It takes hella nerve to venture into The Swamp. As the dead water seeps into your boots, amidst the stagnant scent of decay and slow dripping of sludge, keep a close eye out.
