It’s a point of departure, the beginning of summer, an opportunity to shed your skin. July and August Recommendations Each month our staff provides you with a selection of the finer things in life. Enjoy!
Style: LRNCE
Music: First Hate
As LRNCE, Laurence Leenaert designs bags and accessories. One of the key elements that sets her apart as a designer is her ability to combine different textures and materials, mixing graphic prints, organic forms (which take shape in neoprene) and coloured fabrics. The new 2015 collection, SUN OUT GUNS OUT, began in the Moroccan desert, M’hamid, where Leenaert arrived with nothing more than a sewing machine. The life of nomads and their recycling of items influenced it, as did the symbols and colours that Laurence came across in the desert.
If melancholic, detached and dreamy synth-pop rocks your boat, First Hate is definitely worth checking out. This enigmatic duo, consisting of Joakim Nørgaard and Anton Falck Gansted (yes, they are Danish), use sparkling synth sounds and dreamy vocals to ensnare listeners in a dreamy, melancholic universe. A bit of The Cure, a bit of Trentemøller and lots of alcoholic beverages seem to have inspired their first, self-titled EP. Their tunes are confusing, but immersive, and strangely addictive. First Hate makes the perfect music for chilling out after a long summer night of raving. And if you need further convincing, the guys from Communions are fans, too.

ing of tastes and genres at the heart of the fervent Walloon city.
Naming his alter-ego after the mouse Ignatz, from the 1910 comic Krazy Kat, Belgian artist Bram Devens creates contrary lo-fi blues, that’s as noisy as it is grand and ethereal. Reckoning with the gravity of the past, this experimental composer combines single guitar with dual pedals, a sampler and vocals that sound like a cross-over between Karen Dalton and a young Indian squab named Wingo, as Devens explains. Catch Ignatz live at Gent Jazz where he’ll take over the Garden Stage on Thursday, 16 July, together with De Stervende Honden.

Misc: Artlexachung
No, you aren’t suffering from dyslexia. You read it correctly. Artlexachung, or surrealism 2.0. Now can you tell what model and contributing editor at British Vogue Alexa Chung and painters such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frida Khalo and Lucian Freud have in common? Well, they are the infinite source of inspiration for Artlexachung. Pairing pictures of the fashion muse with the classics of painting featuring a similar outfit and pose results in very funny diptyques. If you’re a fashion junky eager to learn about art, this just might be the right Instagram for you. Take a break from paparazzi shots: it’s time for more subtle views.

We Visit You: Hannes Verhoustraete Photo by Stephen Freeman
What do you like best about your place? My garden. And the silence. What are you listening to at the moment? I’ve been listening to lots of jazz lately, looking into the improvised work of Joe Mcphee, for example. What’s the first record you bought? Dancetrain 7 in the Nineties. Your first ever music-related memory? Dancing to The Temptations in a tank top at the age of five in our living room. What’s your favourite pastime? Drinks with mates. What does your ideal lazy Sunday look like? Waking up late, be slow, go out to the market at Midi station for breakfast, read a book, solve a crossword puzzle with my girlfriend, catch a movie… Any guilty pleasures? Many. Any regrets recently? Nothing I’d remember. What makes you dance? Quite a lot. Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? I’m curious about Wastelands this summer in Ghent.
Name: Hannes Verhoustraete Age: 28 Home: Brussels Zodiac sign: Scorpio Website: www.sabzian.be Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m a documentary filmmaker and freelance journalist/cameraman/editor. I also volunteer at Sabzian.be, a cinephile website that publishes articles and mapping film events in Belgium. What projects are you working on? Currently I’m shooting my first feature documentary on the Congolese diaspora in Brussels. I’m also working as an editing assistant for Jasper Rigole’s upcoming solo exhibition in Z33. What inspires you? I’m quite eclectic in my interests. It’s always a combination of things, moods and people that puts me in a good working mood. What’s your favorite film festival? Courtisane Festival in Ghent offers a wide array of inspiring films. They see cinema as a network of shared sensibilities, and each year they carefully curate a dialogue between old and new work. I always come back filled with energy. It’s like a yearly trip to the watering hole or something.

The Festival Issue. Interview Ever since we caught wind of his debut Dreamzone, Jaakko Eino Kalevi has been enchanting us with the sounds of his musical odyssey. If there’s one word that would do right to this long-haired Fin, it’s
Jaakko Eino Kalevi Interview by Maija Jussila Photos shot by Ériver Hijano in Los Angeles, USA
probably ‘dreamy’. Because like a real dreamboat, he creates lush, psychedelic lo-fi pop. With the impending release of his selftitled full-length, we sat down with Jaakko to explore his image as a daytime star-gazer and expose who he really is 12

Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Continued Did you just move? You’re living in Berlin these days, right? Yeah. I imagine that’s quite an adjustment from your life in Finland... It is. It’s pretty different to live here rather than just visit. There are a few difficulties, because I don’t speak German, but I get by pretty well with English. Yeah, I’ve lived abroad too, and it’s definitely pretty different from being in Finland. Do you feel it alters your personality at all? Yeah, I think so – or I feel like it does a bit. That also depends on who I’m with. On the other hand, that’s also true for when I’m in Finland. It kind of depends on whose company I’m in. Do you feel there’s any difference between public and personal life? For example, are you recognised more in Finland than in Berlin? Not really. In Finland I just know a lot more people overall. Although, this one time I was at a supermarket close to my home and a woman came up to me and told me how much she loved a new song and said that she couldn’t wait for the new album. That was pretty strange. About the new album. The opening track is named for the initials of your name and in the chorus you repeatedly chant your own name. Is that a way for you to present or establish yourself? Well, difficult question... I mean, how does that tie in with your identity? I don’t think it relates to it all that much. I would say it was inspired by some rap songs, playing with repetition. I think it’s fun. A lot of people can’t pronounce my name. Maybe I play with the rhythm partly because of that too – not really in the way that my name is pronounced, but more in terms of how the rhythm in the song is a bit strange. Are they all your names? Yeah, they’re my first names.

The Festival Issue. Interview It seems like a certain type of image has been constructed around you, the way you look and the way you’re often portrayed. Have you always been the same or did you face the cliche identity crisis as a teenager? [Laughing] I doubt I’ve always been the same, but I don’t know. What kind of an image is given off about me? It’d be fun to know. Perhaps a dreamy image. Oh, I’m not very dreamy. Do you ever daydream? Not really. Well, actually I wonder if there’s any point to dreaming? Ha-ha. Of course there is a point. What do I dream about? Now I’m dreaming about getting the internet at home. [Laughing] What about dreaming at night? Actually, I had a dream last night or the night before, but I didn’t write it down… I just listened to Perttu Häkkinen’s radio show the other day and it was about spiritual growth, and there was a good thing about dreaming and daydreaming. What did he say? That people dream about a better life and make radical decisions and then the same emptiness follows them. That it’s better to live in the moment, and that dreaming is not that. On the other hand, there are many ways of dreaming. You can dream about this perfect, blissful life, but you can also dream about having the internet. Perttu Häkkinen’s shows are good, but I guess change is also refreshing. Is there anything you’ve changed in the past year? I’ve learned that it’s good to save up money. Even though I haven’t. I theoretically have. Jaakko Eino Kalevi plays Wastelands on 08 August, at 019, Ghent. The festival is free for Subbacultcha members.

Communions
The Festival Issue. Interview Over the years, a thriving noise, punk, industrial and synth scene has developed in Copenhagen. Though Communions’ postpunk has always sounded oddly sunnier than that of their brethren, their new selftitled EP sports a clear melodic pop rocky vibe, with an epic feel. As vocalist Martin Rehof tells us, it was only back in 2013 that he and his brother Mads joined Frederik and Jacob. Two EPs later, they’re playing Roskilde. And Wastelands Interview by Julien Van de Casteele Photos shot by Kasper Palsnov in Copenhagen, Denmark
Your new EP just came out last month. How do you feel about it? We’re very excited. We usually move on very quickly after we’ve recorded something, but I think the songs are a good representation of our sounds right now. Three of the songs on the album are older and I think you can kind of hear that; ‘Summer’s Oath’, ‘Wherever’, ‘Restless Hour’. These are very short, straight to the point, melodic pop-rock songs, which are the ones that people would most likely think sound like us. The other two songs point to a new direction: they are more elaborated and more expansive in a way. I think this is where we’re heading. The production has been really important,
19
Communions. Continued we teamed up with Malthe Fisher who plays in Lust for Youth and his friend, and I really think we hit something with this EP. Is Copenhagen a hot scene for punk and noise music, with bands like Iceage, Vår, Lust for Youth and Marching Church? Yeah. Mayhem, where we share our rehearsal space with all of these bands, is an interesting place. I don’t know if it has anything to do with that, but the concerts that are held there kind of have a life of their own; there aren’t any rules or restrictions on how you’re supposed to arrange a concert. It’s an abandoned warehouse that became a venue and a rehearsal space run by musicians. So there’s a lot of freedom to do whatever you want and experiment and have a concentrated area where people can come listen to that kind of music. However, I don’t think we see ourselves too much as part of that scene, I don’t think we’re particularly comparable with the other bands. I agree more with people who call our music pop rock. So Mayhem is a bit like Christiania? Ha-ha, yeah. Except Christiania is ran by motorcycle gangs. Who is that sexy dude on your album cover? It’s Ezra Shami, this beautiful model guy that we’re friends with. We wanted something with a sense of athleticism, so we went to this stadium and tried taking pictures of Shami running around and jumping. Those pictures weren’t really what we expected. But then there was this weird shot of him in this weird pose where he’s in mid-action of getting up. We kinda like this sense of ambiguity. Now we’re shooting a video with him for one of our songs, so it’s a continuing story. Where’s the best place to catch a summer concert in Denmark? There’s a lot of outdoor stuff in Copenhagen. Smash! Bang! Pow!, our management, hosts a lot of events during the summer. And there is obviously Roskilde and we’re part of the line-up this year.
20
Communions. Continued ‘The songs point in a new direction. They’re more elaborated and more expansive in a way’ What are the challenges of playing a festival compared to playing a gig in a concert venue? Different vibes. When you go play at a venue there’s a lot more preparation going into it because you have time to do long sound checks and kinda plan how you’ll be doing things. At a festival, you don’t even have time to do a sound check because you’re on stage within a second and do a live sound check. And the sound is probably gonna be very fucked for the first songs no matter what, so you kind of go in knowing that. But I’m not saying that one is better than another, because playing in front of a large audience is super exciting and fun. Any Danish bands we should check out? We’re good friends with the band First Hate, which is the first band we went on tour with. And I really like what MØ makes.

Bright Entity by Tina Herbots
They’ve been composing since 2009, but with Flying While Standing, duo Ciska Thomas and Michiel Claus, aka Bright Entity, just released their first EP, out on Holger Tracks. And bright it is – sweet, sugary and with a hint of upbeat melancholy, like ‘a riddle that’s crystal clear’, as Ciska sings in ‘El Pauji’. Using mainly synthesizers and drum machines they’ve created six lush tracks, a lovely blend of pop music for Roland dummies. As ‘Movin’ and Romancin’’ indicates, this is a soundtrack for cruising and dancing, for making out and romancing. In short: all the things you – and we – love. It’s eighties synth-pop, but without the cheese 25

Scene Report Ostend
Text by Lennart Dutrieue and Joris Roobroeck Photos shot by Tom Jonckheere in Ostend, Belgium

Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! So we feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. Since the seaside’s the place to be on hazy summer days, we asked triplethreat Kamp Noord, a bicycle workshop, serigraphy studio and exhibition space, to take us for a tour around Ostend. Generating a hotbed of creativity for young artists, Lennart Dutrieue and Joris Roobroeck know exactly where you need to be
Three years ago, we decided to start screen printing without any prior knowledge, but by trial and error we taught ourselves an effective technique. We moved from studio to studio, with just two original members. Our story took a whole new turn when we found our current studio, back near the sea where we belong. It was an old bottling plant and it was actually way too big for us – but you know what they say about love at first sight. Now we have room to let our imaginations run wild and to host exhibitions and concerts. We’re inspired by art movements like Dadaism, Wiener Werkstätte, the Parisian impressionists, ’90s squatters in New York and children from the suburbs in Paris. Our heroes are Jean Michel Basquiat, GG Allin, Jimmy Frey and Fausto Coppi. But we just see ourselves as simple draughtsmen, screen printers, ‘Flandriens’ – or real Ostend fishermen.
29
Scene Report: Ostend. Continued ‘Lately, Ostend is becoming a paradise for tourists with a lot of basic shops that sell the same stuff’ Here in Ostend, we all get along just fine. For youngsters like us we have Vrijstraat O, an art centre with a beautiful view of the seascape, our recently redesigned post office CC De Grote Post and our new basement concert venue The Elyséé near the entertainment district. If we want to get really wasted we go to the Krush Club, a trendy place near the Casino – if they let us in, that is. Lately, Ostend is becoming a paradise for tourists with a lot of basic shops that sell the same stuff. It’s very hard to find something you like, especially if you like to think outside the box. Luckily, we still have the Ostendse Ploate, where we can find the vinyl and music we want. Each year, there’s a free six-day festival in Ostend called De Paulusfeesten (10-18 August). Afterwards, there are official after parties in The Elyséé, organised by Klub Fel, where we work together with other organisations from the area to keep these parties accessible for everyone with a love for music and art. There will also be a big Kamp Noord night with live screen printing, a big graffiti canvas to let your creativity go nuts and a six-hour back-to-back DJ set from our very own Kamp Noord Soundsystem. Apart from our studio, you’ll also find us on the Oosterstaketsel, in Frankenstein, an ugly, super-scary skateboarding park in a garage; or 3 Gapers, a monument in Ostend where us youngsters hang out on our bikes just rolling around. When it comes to ‘scenes’, we don’t do pigeonholing. We have influences from every scene here in our city. Because we live near the North Sea coast, there’s a lot of music that

The Festival Issue. Scene Report blows over from the UK. That, and a lot of drunken British sailors. With the musical background we have from Marvin Gaye, Arno and even The Van Jets, you might say that we are open to any kind of music. But if we had to pick out one scene, we’d go for the psychedelic garage/surf-rock made by our friends at Alpha Wale, who have the salty water of the North Sea running through their veins. They can be proud of their debut album. With Bed Rugs from Antwerp, The Tubs from Ghent and Thee Marvin Gay’s from Tongeren, you might say there’s a music scene right there to look out for. And you could check them all out at Rock Zerkegem this summer. Our goal is to keep on growing and become a valuable mix between a cultural centre, art studio and a sports bar. Our ‘Kamp Noord Market’ is well-known in our region. Three times a year, we give everybody a chance to set up a stand in our studio to promote their artistic goods or services. Together with Steer Shop Bruges, we hope to organise special bicycle events in the future. But someday, our dream is to rent an even bigger hall or shed with room for big containers on wheels. Each container could be a serigraphy studio, kitchen, bicycle store, pop-up store… you name it! And of course: united we stand, divided we fall. We exchange services as much as possible. That way, you get to know a lot of people and you have the opportunity to discover different places. People you better recognise: type and web geniuses Arthur Haegeman, Solid Crew (Wouter Adam, Tom Jonckeere, Daniil Lavrovski, Ben Bonneure) – a cool crew who fill their time with taking pictures and riding bicycles. Cray Cray Luciano Janssen, aka lucienlucienlucien – an upcoming flash tattoo artist. Bokeh & Kumar – two chaps who give themselves completely to the Kamp Noord project and also DJ and produce when they have some spare time, and the brothers Debruyne from Ratpooh (The Brown Collectiv), a stoner band from Ostend.

The Modern Utopian by Richard Fairfield I think most of us would be lying if we said the idea of communal living hadn’t seemed appealing at one point or another. And while alternative communities are still very much present, there was certainly a time when their allure – and propagation – was far more real and intense. In The Modern Utopian, Richard Fairfield compiles a series of essays from the eponymous publication, all written by folks who either lived in or witnessed the internal dynamics of different types of wannabe utopic playgrounds in the Sixties and Seventies. You have the (literal) trips to Timothy Leary's Milbrook and other psychedelic communes; the religious subset led by zealous charmers with hilarious photo shoots; the nudies, the foodies, the yogis and the Father Yod. And yet for all the different ideals that each of these stood for, their reality was strikingly similar. It’s at this point where the promise of countercul-
ture begins to crumble, what with the equating of leaders to personal gods, the rampant misogyny that prevailed in spite of – or perhaps as a reaction to – women’s struggles in ‘straight’ society, the populist and dangerously paternalist streaks and the catastrophic results that these infamously engendered. Nevertheless, The Modern Utopian can also serve as a guideline to how to do things now, and better. Because in the end, hundreds of thousands of kids didn’t leave home because they couldn’t have their ice cream: they, too, wanted to break out of the capitalist-enforced robotism they were born into and find their self-made Walhalla. And their eternal summer they found. At least they looked for it, which says enough.

Summer Film College Vlaamse Dienst voor Filmcultuur
Eight days, 20 lectures and more than 30 screenings make up the biannual Summer Film College in Antwerp. This year’s edition focuses on the work of the famous actor, acrobat and film producer Burt Lancaster, with screenings of Fred Zinneman’s From Here to Eternity and Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece Il gattopardo, both starring Lancaster. There is also a master class with a summer guest, the Scottish director Bill Forsyth. His Local Hero, a darkly serious comedy that one could link to the work of Robert Hamer, has gained international attention. Secondly, the Summer Film College is dedicated to the late, one could say autobiographical work of the self-proclaimed dinosaur, gardener and country doctor of cinema: Jean-Luc Godard, at once a relic of the past and a messenger from the future. Applications for the entire programme due 06 July (info@vdfc.be). Place to be: Cinema Zuid, Antwerp, 19-26 July.

Films Jacques Tati
‘[De] Sica and Tati changed film because in their work nature is actor, object [is] star, the studio is eliminated, time and space unite and multiply one by the other. The word is visage; and the visage, immensely deepened, is character, and the whole is written there only in the language of the screen,’ dixit Marcel L’herbier. If you had to think of a filmmaker you’d skip a summer evening for, leave your drink and go spend two hours in the dark for, chances are it’s Jacques Tati. Fans in Brussels shouldn’t bet on that tan this summer. In Tati’s world as visage, the mouth on this face is probably shaped by its continuous pronunciation of colour. Never has a palette been as eloquent but this visage is not only the vehicle of a huge colour spectrum. All the while, it evokes those human tragedies common to us all – whilst poking lots of fun, of course. Tati re-introduces you to the world you belong to and will provide a reinvigorating holiday for those stuck in the city all summer. 12 July-30 August at Flagey, Brussels, in collaboration with Cinematek, Brussels.

Expo: Michael Dean - Jumping Bones
Expo: The Camera’s Blind Spot II
As a platform for the production, presentation and debate of artistic practices, Extra City Kunsthal presents Michael Dean’s first institutional exhibition in Belgium. For his work, the London-based artist borrows instruments and strategies from the practices of the sculptor, the writer and the typographer, reorganising these in a singular syntax intersecting texts and bodies, abstractions and invocations, figures of speech, sight and touch. The unsettled and interdependent objects and sentences of the exhibition suggest an experience where seeing is indistinguishable from ‘being with’. Intimacy might be said to be the engine of Dean’s practice, as he’s working on the abstract reconstruction of it.
After a first edition in Nuori, Italy, The Camera’s Blind Spot II focuses on the relationship between sculpture and photography today, featuring emerging and established artists. It aims to explore the ways in which contemporary art reconfigures the reciprocal gaze between photography and sculpture, manifesting as sculptural works that are presented as photographs, or pushing the materiality of the photographic image to the point that it turns it into a sculpture in its own right. This is not just an exhibition of prints, therefore, but a wholly different project, which includes installations, videos, objects ambiguously poised between two and three dimensions and, last but not least, sculptures.

04, 11, 18 + 25 July - Cinema Galeries, Brussels 19.00 | €8.50 | Free for members Amira Daoudi created her first movie poster for Gust Van den Berghe – an important task, since the poster is, together with the trailer, one of the major ‘sells’, seducing and convincing people to go watch a film. What began as a favour to a friend, soon resulted in a flood of assignments from the film industry. As an artistic director, Daoudi worked for an impressive list of directors. Cinema Galeries now presents an exposition and retrospective of her work. All the films Daoudi has contributed to are free for members. Screenings are on four consecutive Saturday evenings, at 19.00: Joachim Lafosse’s A perdre la raison (04 July), Pieter Van Hees’ Waste Land (11 July), Fien Troch’s Kid (18 July) and Eva Küpper’s What’s in a name (25 July). The exposition runs until 28 July.

cal bands coming from different regions of our tiny flat country, with a special interest in the psychedelic, surf and garage genres. With beers at the stunning price of just €1, go enjoy Cosmonauts, Moaning Cities, Bed Rugs and more.
09 July - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €8 | Free for members Stargazing is a common hobby in Chile, and psych-rock band The Holydrug Couple provides the perfect music to listen to while pondering the miracles and mysteries of the universe. Layer upon layer, they construct sometimes complex, yet always highly enjoyable, soundscapes. The blues are always just around the corner, while a bit of lo-fi grain adds to their mystique. On their third LP, released on the brilliant Sacred Bones Records, they sound more distilled and catchy than ever. Come and be enchanted!
Party: Borgerwood Avondfeest
25 July - Trix, Antwerp 23.00 | €10 | Free for members After spending the first day of eclectic sounds on an old railway site in Borgerhout, the after-party of Borgerwood Festival is at Trix. Here’s the fine selection of DJs: Kim Ann Foxman, Sixsixsixties, the Antwerp-based specialist in dream house; a timeless house DJ set by Studio Brussel’s Kong; and the electronic sad house of Andras Fox, coming especially from Melbourne. It’s a party for the ’hood, but also a wonderful welcome to a house filled to the brim with, um, house.

tionally high standards of musical integrity, throughout clubs such as Fuse and Magic Mirrors. Recently, they stepped up their game, taking their beats to Paris. We aren’t exaggerating when we call this event a true treat – what else would you call a 12-hour party on a boat to celebrate their third birthday? Hell yes. Catering to you are residents Kafim, Chris Ferreira and Silicon Vallée live. Flying straight from Berlin, Privacy’s got what it takes to top things off. Come and get deep!
30 July - Madame Moustache, Brussels 20.00 | €8 | Free for members Hailing from the suburban sprawl of Orange County, this four-piece garagetrance outfit creates malcontent dronepop melodies, offering you a glimpse of Southern Californian 21st-century rock’n’roll. Having supported established acts at home and abroad (think: The Growlers and Ty Segall), they’re back to tear up Madame Moustache, together with The Glücks, who’ll treat you to raw garage rock.
Arto Lindsay
30 July - DOK (Democrazy), Ghent 20.00 | €16 | Free for members From the late ’70s onwards, this American has been exploring the boundaries of mainstream and avant-garde music. He was a founding member of the nowave band DNA and in his solo work, he blends rock and electronics with samba and bossa nova, creating refined and subtly catchy melodies. Brazilians like João Gilberto and Tom Zé – names that are bigger than Mount Everest in the bossa nova and tropicália world – asked him to produce their albums. And on his latest LP, he got a helping hand from Brian Eno, among others. The result is music like a swooning love letter, in the hot evening air.

For the fourth time, we’re organising quite the festival. Finnish dream boat Jaakko Eino Kalevi takes over your heart with lush psychedelic lo-fi pop and Danish quartet Communions peddle post-punk with a clear melodic poprocky vibe and an epic feel. Whilst singing about poisoned candy, raven Molly Nilsson brings dark and deeply romantic songs. And Dublin boy Rejjie Snow is going to make this evening as sultry as a summer night possibly can get, rapping ever-so-temptingly about fake Guccis, riots and the Illuminati. Also on the bill: the enthralling mix of reggaeton, grime, kizomba and R&B of Blaze Kidd ft. Kamixlo and Uli K;, DSR Lines and Bright Entity.
Festival: Micro Festival
07-08 August - Espace 251 Nord, (JauneOrange), Liège Fri 18.30, Sat 13.00 | €15 | Free for members Micro Festival is all set for its sixth edition. Curated by the Liège-based collective JauneOrange, the key elements of this two-day party remain the same: in green surroundings, right in the heart of Liège, all kind of genres get mixed up, from the primal punk rock of Danish band Iceage to the ethereal neo-psychedelic pop of Dutch artist Jacco Gardner. A ravishing gathering of tastes!

With the ever-growing success of its socalled ‘pop mainstream music’, Thailand is experiencing a rebirth of its deepest cultural roots. Y/Our music narrates the stories of nine contemporary Thai artists whose backgrounds and expressions vary from traditional countryside music to hummed labour songs to underground indie rock. Through their eyes, the focus is placed on how Thai music can reinvent itself based upon a cultural heritage that has spanned castes, days and ages. Part of the musical summer screening programme Sound/Track/.
‘I can play all day, with my eyes shut, with you on my mind all the time.’ The tunes of 18+ always get stuck in our head for several days straight. With its elegant minimalist R&B, the LA duo know how to hit it off in an extremely sensual, dreamlike world, invigorated all the more by their haunting videos. After online mixtapes, last year saw the release of their debut LP, Trust, on which they’re casting a critical eye over our internet obsessions. When you hear them sing ‘Listen sister, I’m your only mister’, you’ll have to bow your head in agreement, boys and girls alike. Steamy Subbacultcha sesh!
