Balearic dreams are on the rise: in the distance, songs so old that they never aged stir hips and contort bodies into sinuous twists. Toma que toma, toma que toma que toma, toma que toma que toma ta. The distance becomes a blur; heat, so present it’s almost solid, absorbs the landscape and draws our previously dormant desires into its haze. From self-releasing their EP on Bandcamp to recently releasing their third LP with Anti Records, Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, aka Girlpool, have come a long way since their early DIY days. Binh is a superstar in Berlin, as one of the faces of the trance minimal house scene, and now he’s taking Europe’s clubs by storm. Brassac resonates with all the party monsters in Brussels, as he’s played most of the best electronic parties in town.

performance in the flatlands that fans couldn’t wait for anymore, the South African, gqom-influenced, music and performance duo FAKA has confirmed their flights to join the party. Also, on the roster is none other than French postclub virtuoso coucou chloe who will follow the steps of last year’s Oklou’s beautiful performance. Subba hasn’t forgotten about those who only swear by the strings as indie troubadour UruguayanAmerican Juan Wauters has been called to give some musical texture to those sangrias we’ll all be sipping on. The Sting is a 1973 multiple Oscarwinning picture, telling a story based on true facts about two professional grifters taking revenge on a mob boss for a murder in 1936 during the Great Depression. The film’s brutality sent shock waves across the world after it premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year but was at the same time praised for the lead act’s performance and director’s technical craftsmanship.

YEAR0001 Swedish independent music company YEAR0001 has been managing the Yung Lean and Bladee entourage since the early days. Lots of trailblazing acts have joined the roster since. Founders Emilio Fagone and Oskar Ekman are on a constant hunt for the exceptional in music. Their main asset? It’s their different musical background, allowing them to be flexible, eclectic and contemporary. We’re happy to have pinned down the boys for their first interview ever, for a chat about how it all came together, Yung Lean and the liberating feeling of organic music.

Emilio: It’s a music company based in Stockholm. Three and a half years ago, me and Oskar started the management, mainly managing Yung Lean, Gud and Yung Sherman, but also Drain Gang with
their shows and became their manager.
We felt that there wasn’t a fitting spot for them to drop their music, so we started a label. Oskar: It started out when me and Emilio realised that it would be better to work together than apart. Back then, we ran separate management companies but we shared a studio space. How did you meet Yung Lean and his entourage? E: I’ve been managing them since day one. I met them in early 2013. Back then, I was a club promoter and I was running a music and arts festival in Trädgården, Stockholm. Apparently, Yung Lean asked an artist from the UK I had booked to collaborate with him. So, he asked me if I knew him, but I didn’t. I wanted to book Yung Lean and the Sadboys for one of my club nights but they were too young at the time. I had to book them in another city where their age was allowed. It was after that first show that I started booking all
it’s just an independent music company. We don’t try to chase any genre. It’s just more flexible rather than to tie yourself down to a single thing. Mine and Emilio’s backgrounds lay in different genres. It was just natural for us to be completely independent instead of being tied down to one genre. The theme of the summer issue is ‘¡ Ay, Qué Calor !’, which is Spanish for ‘Oh that’s hot!’. Next to the artists on YEAR0001, who’s bringing the heat in 2019? E: S/o to Palmistry, his sophomore album, Afterlife, which recently came out on Mixpak, is truly a modern pop classic. Oli XL has a bright future ahead with his debut album coming up. Holly Herndon’s Spawn project is quite astonishing and Objekt’s live A/V show with Ezra Miller is something you shouldn’t miss this year.

There’s more guitar-oriented music coming out on the label (Viagra Boys, Död Mark). What do you think about the present or future of rock music? O: I think we’ve had a period where people considered guitar music to be less important. Technology was advancing and after a while, the whole technology behind recording a live band became more and more irrelevant as bedroom recording became more accessible. I think guitar music will always be relevant and needed, especially in times where people are looking for something with more of a live element to it. At a time where a lot of electronic music is completely on the grid, listening to something more organic can feel liberating. E: Oskar comes from the Swedish hardcore scene and I grew up on ’90s, ’00s indie/avantgarde music, which were all guitar-oriented genres. We also share a lot of musical references with the artists we work with so it came naturally, I believe. What do you seek in a potential artist to release on YR1? O: We’re looking for something exceptional. With the increasing accessibility of recording technology came a lot of mediocre music. We’ve been fortunate enough to find musicians that are completely genius

in what they do. And we just want to amplify that. When you already have four or five guys who’re considered afraid of challenging the status quo, you start attracting similar artists. We’re trying to work with people who are constantly pushing the edge of what music can be in 2019. What’s the thing you definitely want to accomplish with the label? O: I don’t think we have a goal with what we’re doing. Rather, we have a drive to do things. I always considered drive to be stronger than having goals. Me, Emilio and the whole staff go to work every day wanting to do something better and bigger and continuously push the boundaries for what we can do as a music company and to form a cultural hub. E: I always try to explore what other fields you can use music in or mix it with. I would love to start a gaming company where artists we work with would make the soundtrack of games.

Girlpool Girlpool made its name five years ago with minimalist indie folk ditties that were living off a bass and a guitar. Since then, the world of this singular duo has evolved both musically and physically. These days, Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad have been joined by a drummer allowing them to take their production to a whole other level. Cleo underwent hormone replacement therapy, altering her appearance and presenting a more masculine voice. The difference between Girlpool’s first recordings and the fourteen solid new songs that appear on today’s What Chaos Is Imaginary (Antirecords) is impressive and concurrent with the band’s emotions. It is fascinating to observe how different the band is today, but what remains strong is a remarkable friendship and a passion for music.

While we wait for the heatwave to hit Belgium, which will most likely be there when you arrive, what will you pack for your tour? Is it important for you to think this through? Cleo: To be honest I haven’t really begun thinking about the apparel I’m going to choose to take for this tour! I typically haven’t been very interested in shorts, but I think I’m going to have to get over that seeing as the heatwave we might encounter. Exactly. Any plans for a dip at some during the tour? To relax… Harmony: Absolutely. Which country are you most excited to visit?

C: France. Have you seen much of it so far? H: Yes, quite a bit. We love travelling through the mountains from France to Italy or Switzerland. It is a great experience. Every new Girlpool album is completely different from the last. Is that something you intended? H: Definitely not. We try to honour what we feel. The creative process depends on where we are but it’s not calculated. Can you choose three words to describe your new album? H: Exploration, self-reflective, growth-oriented.

Was the creative process different for this one? H: Yes, a lot of the songs that Cleo and I wrote almost came completely independently and then we got together to record them and explore where we could take them. You guys don’t live close to each other? How often do you see each other? H: Well, at the time we weren’t living close to each other. We were living in different cities (Philly for example) when most of this work was made but now we live in the same city and we see each other almost every day. [Laughs] Or every other day. We hang out a lot. Can you summarize the lyrical content of your last record for us? H: Oh, it encapsulates a lot. It’s really hard to get all the lyrics in there. It’s not really one message you know. It’s a bunch of different personal ideas. It deals with friendship and evolution for sure. Do you feel close to some bands in the States / L.A.? H: Yes, definitely. There are a lot of amazing creative people here doing amazing things – It’s very inspiring. Many bands come to mind: Lala Lala, Vagabon, Porches, Sasami, King Princess, Alex G, Hand Habits, Tomberlin.

Do you have unexpected tastes? Things that you love and no one would guess you’re into? H: [Laughs] I love philosophy books and new age spirituality books and I love bad TV: Vampire Diaries, Riverdale, etc. I guess it’s not bad TV, maybe more like reality TV shows? But it’s not great TV. Do you have a favourite venue in Europe? H: Botanique in Brussels is one of my favourites, it’s so beautiful but there are a lot of gorgeous venues there. We played on a boat once in Bristol and that was amazing too. Do you feel like a professional musician building a career with this band? H: I have a lot of passions and creative outlets. I love performing of all types but yes, it is a career for the both of us and is currently supporting us. It’s very amazing getting to play and write for a living. I love to write. Could you advise our readers to read one book that really speaks to you? H: Letters to a young poet by Rainer Maria Rilke.

coucou chloe A glistening underground sound and dainty dark aesthetics. That’s coucou chloe at first glance. She blends vocal raps through her synths and evokes a software sound with a clubby atmosphere. On top of that, she’s the co-founder of the NUXXE label, together with Sega Bodega and Shygirl. On an early morning in L.A., while she was getting her first cup of coffee, we chatted about surprises at the airport, sour candy and self-love.

A: Cutest desire you have? C: For a long time, I’ve had this obsession with wanting someone to pick me up at the airport, holding a board with my name on it. I wish a friend would surprise me like that. Sometimes people have these crazy drawings for the people coming home. I’m always so touched by these kinda things. A: Occasions you’ll never forget? C: It could be anything, it could even be someone smiling on the street. Whenever I’m performing in a club, people are shouting and showing love. That feels really special. Lately, I’ve caught myself so many times performing and about to cry on stage. A: Love of your life? C: I guess that’s gotta be myself. I mean, it’s important to not forget you. At first, I wondered why I’d be loving myself consciously. But lately I started to and it made sense actually. It’s not selfish or too self-centred. How could you get to something healthy without loving yourself? Sometimes I even listen to ‘In love With Myself’ by David Guetta, ha-ha. A: Candy you love most? C: Oh, there are so many things to say. I really love the big Chupa Chups lollipops, with the chewing gum inside. They’re the best. Mmm, and the little candy eggs. They’re my favourite, together with Bubblizz. And soft cherries too,

actually. I feel like when you get candy, you can’t just get one bag. It’s a whole experience, and you should get all the flavours you like and balance them out. A: Hazards of getting to know you? C: I have a lot of love to give, so be careful. And I also don’t give a fuck, so be careful.

Two years ago, Sint-Niklaas-based designer Nicolas Erauw built his own machine, called TONK!, and developed a fresh way of working which combines two oldschool techniques: candle-dipping and casting. His shiny yet vigorous objects are bringing him to the attention of the rarefied echelons of the design world.

What are your designs based on? N: My ideas often stem from basic objects or techniques. I was trained as a furniture designer so I’m very much used to working from the ‘form follows function’ mindset. However, the more I make, the more I try to deviate from this initial approach. Lately, I get inspired by a lot of shapes on the streets, like concrete sewer pipes. Does the explicit visual character of your objects come from the techniques you use? N: Yes, mostly. The machine I work with has a set of limitations that I have to keep in mind while creating. I always start with designing the separate basic components of the shape I want to make. For each part I draw vertical constructions with strings, as I learned that dipping works best with vertical string setups. Then I drop the string constructions in a bath of hot wax. Once they’ve reached the right width, I take them out of the machine and bend the wax before it cools and sets. People from a bronze foundry in Oostakker put the structures in a plaster cast which goes into an oven. The wax melts and aluminium is cast into the void. Finally I polish all the casted components and assemble them into an object. What attracted you initially to making furniture pieces?

N: I initiated my interior design studies at a point in my life when I really wanted to go back to physical labour. Being in touch with a material was very important. I like things brutal. The designers who inspire me distinguish themselves not through a specific aesthetic but through their common interest for manual craft.

Who are those designers? N: For example, Anton Alvarez, who I interned with in Sweden. He also builds machines for his designs and that really sparked my enthusiasm to make my own.
There’s this interesting tension in your work between on the one hand the machine, which stands for reproducibility, and on the other hand, the interest in manual work and the individuality of each of your works. N: Indeed, each piece is unique. The machine allows me to make similar objects which serve the same purpose while still remaining completely unique. It’s a way of working that sometimes makes me more of a sculptor.

How did you experience the transition from the safe environment of school to the art and interior design scene in the outside world? N: I calmly kept developing my works and technique. You need to have faith for a while. It’s a whole new world you’re stepping into. Social media is a big help. It makes it more easy to spread your work or to connect with fellow designers, gallerists etc. For example, my collaboration with the new Antwerpbased Everyday Gallery started from a conversation on Instagram with founder Boris Devis. It resulted in a fun group show with a lot of talented young designers. What other projects can we expect from you in the near future? N: I’m looking for a new way of working which could translate my fascination with the marble carvers of Carrara to a project with a cheaper and modern material. Besides that, I will keep on perfecting my machine. I’m hoping to find possibilities to build bigger and more complex structures.

For her debut event at Zomerfabriek, Belgian photographer Aurélie Bayad brings a queer night of music, artworks, audiovisual installations and performances to give us an intimate glimpse into the genesis of a different queer universe. Appropriately named Softcore, the collaboration between Bayad and other like-minded artistic talent, including Günbike Erdermir and Anais Kim, explores the collision of softness and hardness when probing questions of gender fluidity, sexuality and sentimental awareness. Abandoning stereotypes and deconstructing the barriers of queer prejudice, the collective offers a safe space for companionship and self-discovery, where experimentation and exploration of the self is approached with mutual love, support and compassion. Bayad’s vision for Softcore is a onenight oasis where you can continuously create and reinvent yourself in all the ways you’ve ever longed and desired. Visitors are invited to partake in this immersive multisensory experience to gain better insight into what queerness is and stands for.

Tropical Diskoral showcases new electronic dance sounds from the Philippines archipelago and its wider diaspora around the world, initiated by Belgian producer-and-DJ UNOS, who wanted to pay tribute to her heritage. She joined forces with Manila-based artist similarobjects and the Tropical Futures Institute, a cultural research entity based in Southeast Asia. ‘We hope to increase electronic music coverage of Asian scenes as we feel that there is a lack of representation on Western-oriented music blogs, for example.’ The first compilation of the series was released on Philippine Independence Day (12 June) and puts a wide variety of voices – separated in space – together on a virtual island group. It features the likes of similarobjects, Pamcy and BP Valenzuela, blending house, disco, pop and leftfield. Certified club gold: ‘Luções’ by LIKE ANIMALS, a carefully built track that sizzles to a satisfying climax.

Another person from the Filipino diaspora is Countess Malaise. Born in Reykjavik, based in Amsterdam, this singer/rapper is raising the bar for herself track by track. On our radar since a year or two, but every release of hers continues to surprise, solidating her up-and-coming status. Her beats are mostly co-produced by Lord Pusswhip and she has a collab track with Englesia and LYZZA. The latter inspired her, both being WOC producers, ‘because all of my producer friends at that moment were all white and all dudes’ she told Glamcult. LYZZA hosted Countess Malaise’s first official gig back in 2017: ‘That is the first time I felt part of the music scene in Amsterdam.’

Sabzian is the cinephile’s guide for Belgium and its surroundings. It offers a free multilingual platform for writing on cinema and visual culture. Every week, Sabzian selects and contextualises three to four screenings. Its agenda is more than a list: Sabzian aims to provide a thorough background to a network of events, screenings and exhibitions that reveal the potential outlines of a cinephile fabric. Each summer, the cinema hesitantly moves outdoors for screenings in the open air. In Bruges, for instance, ’90s classic Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993) will be screened at Fayard Pop-Up Cinema. ‘Spielberg is the Walt Disney of the New Cinema who has brought family entertainment to a new level. He makes movies that are extensions of theme parks, which are already extensions of new cinema sensations. Film shapes the body image of children, it draws mental patterns upon which a future life will hinge its fictions. In Jurassic Park images don’t function as images, they induce physical sensations and stories that thrive on ambivalences. The disobedient children have adults at their side to who responsibility is unimportant. Spielberg lets his characters and the spectator simmer in that pot. The adult spectator easily recognises himself in both the panic of the children and the limitations of the adults. Tell us, what do you do in life? Z: I’m working as an application & operations engineer for a financial transaction company called Atos. And I’m getting a degree in IT. What do you like best about your place? Z: It has a lot of light and plenty of space for my cat to enjoy herself. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Z: Mostly electronic music, I really enjoyed Helena Hauff’s set at Listen! Festival. I hope she comes back soon. But I also enjoy local hip hop like the upcoming rapper Frenetik. What’s the first record you bought? Z: I don’t think I’ve ever bought a record. But in primary school one boy bought an album by Sexion d’Assaut on CD and we all listened to it together. What’s your favourite pastime? Z: I really love food. I love cooking, I love people cooking for me, I love eating out… I think it’s an addiction and I get grumpy when I’m hungry.
