After gracing our shores for a Boiler Room session back in May, Detroit’s techno pioneer K-Hand returns for her Belgian follow-up, this time at the inner sanctum that is C12. Joining ‘The First Lady Of Detroit’ on the decks is Siren, the London-based queer DJ collective fresh out of their Southbank summer residency, and Deep In House’s very own Chris Ferreira.
Drab Majesty, the project of androgynous and provocative producer Deb Demure, eloquently mixes the classic new wave of the ’80s with dark wave and gothic wave, all soaked in soulful ritual lyrics. This dark synth-pop band was initially a solo project; in 2016 following insane success Drab Majesty turned into a duet with unconventional double keyboard accompaniment under the direction of MonaD. Over the last couple of years, Drab Majesty has managed to collaborate with such genre coryphaeus as Psychic TV, Clan of Xymox, The Frozen Autumn, Prayers, Youth Code, King Dude and Cold Cave. Shall we go check them out? Leaning toward ‘hard yessss’!

Treading a 100-year-old path of Thomas Mann and his pivotal work Magic Mountain, Louis Janssens and Ferre Marnef continue writing Mann’s literary wonder in a way they know best – on the theatre stage. Their piece Toverberg speaks to the greatest social impasse of our contemporary times, exploring the widening abyss between the poor and the rich. As the fictional mountain between them grows, Toverberg seeks to view it in its towering entirety, while paying attention to those who are left to sow the bitter realities of hardship at the darkest edges of the mountain base.

In The Last Tall Man, directed and performed by Montignards#3, three characters engage in an intellectual boxing match, trying to unravel the complexities of the modern world amid the deafening cacophony of discordant voices. A relentless TV presenter seeks to uproot the values of white male privilege, each question a painful blow to the white old man, hiding in the comfort of his ivory tower. Sitting on the cloud is the consciousness of the world, imparting her wisdom to the warriors on stage. Who will come out the winner?

Abigail Child, which attempts to dissect the viewer’s train of thought through our contradictory feelings towards satisfaction, focusing on sexuality and the erotic. Second film on the list is Els Van Riel’s poetic homage to the slowly vanishing techniques of analogue filmmaking, Gradual Speed.

His obsession for materials and textures is shown through the four parts of the exhibition: paper, plastic, metal and construction materials. Helena Deland It’s always special to witness the first steps of an emerging artist – and that’s especially true in the case of Helena Deland, who we’re relying on to add a breath of fresh air to our (fingers crossed!) upcoming Indian summer. The young Canadian has released five EPs so far, and has opened for familiar faces like our favourite weirdo Connan Mockasin and autumn boys Whitney. After giving us a sneak peek at Liège during a European tour, Deland is set to record her first full length album, for which she’ll do pretty much everything – DIY in full splendor. Since we thirst for Deland’s blend of tender folk, electropop and ’80s-inspired alternative, we grabbed a little Facetime to see what she’s up to these days and hear what’s going on in the land of beavers.

When did you start making music and how? HD: I guess I’ve always been playing music and as a teen I was already writing songs. I regarded it as a fun hobby. I started taking it more seriously about four years ago when I realised that it was what I wanted to do with my life. Did you go to college? HD: Yes, I was studying French literature in Montreal. It was a fun degree but I remember being a bit overwhelmed when I started touring before I finished my degree. I had to write an essay about a George Perec novel while my friend was driving us from venue to venue. We were in the green room and I was in my glasses highlighting passages in the novel. I remember the other band didn’t know I was in my finals and they were thinking, ‘Wow, she’s an intense reader!’ My first tour was in support of Whitney. They’re a pretty huge band from Chicago. Such sweethearts! It was a very lucky first experience because they’re killing it and personally we got along very well. If you could restart one episode of your musical life, which would it be and how would you change it? HD: There isn’t any part of my music life that I regret or that I would do differently because

everything was a learning experience and I’m quite happy with where I am now. I really had to learn to not be as self-conscious as I was and be less preoccupied with how things should be and how they would come across. It’s a coming of age in general to realise that the only way that makes sense is the way that feels
right as long as it’s obviously respectful. If I could tell my younger-self anything, it would be to worry less about what I come across because it doesn’t matter. I think that being genuine is so precious. It’s actually hard to not do things artistically for hype or for other people but it’s crucial. You’re still at the beginning of your career. Have you set yourself goals? HD: Yeah, for sure. I just started recording my first full-length
album. It’s kind of a reaction to what I’ve just been telling you about. So, I’ve decided to reel it in. At this point, I need to make something that depends as much as possible on me, where I have as much control as I want. I’ve worked with producers who I admire a lot but I feel like I have to prove something to
myself. Now, I work with a friend who acts as co-producer and sound engineer but I’m writing all the arrangements and also playing them. It’s a lot of work but I feel pretty confident about what’s coming up. Studio time is planned just after we come back from the next EU tour in September. We often meet indie bands that go on tour for a long time and come home broke. What’s your situation? HD: We’re lucky for that in

Canada, because we get government support to promote our culture abroad. It’s very helpful. If I didn’t have that, I would have to work a side-job which at this point seems impossible because of the schedule. It’s a tough conundrum. You’re too busy to have a side-job but you’re busy with stuff that doesn’t bring in any money. It’s always a struggle in the beginning, but I have the positive sensation that it’s going to get more stable for me in the future. How do you get ready for a tour? HD: I usually get stressed out a couple of days before leaving. I think the way to get ready is to find a lot of reading and download a lot of podcasts. You also have to be very open about what you’re going through with the other musicians so that people know what to expect from your energy level. Being open and having stuff to do in the van is the right method… Are there some artists of the past that inspire you? HD: I really love Joni Mitchell. She wrote some of the songs where I’m just like, ‘Wow. I really wish I wrote that.’ I think she has a playful relationship to music. Her themes are really common but very well described. Drab Majesty ‘Two modern minds won’t say what they want to / To push a button in real time, with an undo.’ These two lines have been firmly stuck in our heads since mid-April. They make the perfect chorus for 2019’s post-punk/darkwave/dream pop/goth rock anthem: Drab Majesty’s lead single ‘Ellipsis’ from their latest album, Modern Mirror, a gorgeous collection of well-crafted, ’80s-inspired pop songs. We made a WhatsApp call to Drab Majesty’s founder, Deb Demure aka Andrew Clinco, while he was playing a synthesizer in the back of their tour van.

D:
This is your third full-length since 2015. How does this one differ from the others? A: I don’t really know. The songwriting is more mature and the overall feel and mood of the album is lighter and more optimistic, while the older records were a bit more written around pain, depression and suffering. D: How come the change of tone? A: I was very happy when I was writing it, living in Athens, Greece. The landscape and people were very inspiring and just being by the ’ ds of myself was really important. I s an song started to learn about myself, about how my brain works when I don’t have to actually engage with anyone for any kind of work-related thing. That opened up some new kind of creative pathways in my mind and was very healthy. D: Some people are saying the myth of Narcissus is an inspiration for the album. What role did it play? A: Greek mythology can have a very present-day adaptation. In these myths, we can learn a lot about others and ourselves. And, there’s something very contemporary about the Narcissus myth

in particular. Narcissus rejects Echo’s advancements in love. She is a true living creature, but he instead becomes enamoured with his own reflection, which is quite abstract. To me, it’s a very clear metaphor for losing oneself in one’s own digital identity and forgetting about the human interactions that are actually more important than having a separate identity on the screen. It gets pretty startling realising how many people start losing the

ability to love and have meaningful interactions when they’re so fixated on their screens. I’m not saying I’m not part of the problem; we all are to some degree. I just see that there’s a parallel between these two stories. D: That isn’t a very positive view on contemporary times, yet you said the new record is more optimistic. Is that a paradox? A: It’s sonically optimistic: the chord progressions are more major instead of minor. But a lot of
my critique on the record doesn’t come from anger or sadness; there’s humour in it as well. It’s the Drab Majesty tongue-in-cheek style; we don’t take ourselves too seriously. This record is even less serious when it comes to being dark, or the goth aesthetic. I’m trying to get away from that, to be totally honest [Laughs]. D: Focusing on the lyrics again, what writers inspire you? A: I think Charles Baudelaire is the clearest example. I love his wordplay and how he speaks of quotidian things and makes them interesting. He can extract so much meaning about something very basic. In general, I really am inspired by wordplay, twisting language and having fun with that. There are endless opportunities to make interesting plays on words, puns… D: There are a lot of references to the 1980s in the band’s music. Why this period? A: A lot of the gear we use – synths, guitar effects – are from the ’80s. I think the musical equipment made at that time is pretty amazing, more than in any other time. But if you took away the particular sound palette that we use, kept the chords of the songs and played it with a piano or acoustic guitar, it would sound more like folk songs. The band was never made to be intentionally

referential to that period; I’m just drawn to these instruments. D: Will you make a folk record? A: Quite possibly. Maybe even an acoustic record. I love writing on acoustic guitar, it’s both liberating and limiting. D: We’d be very curious to hear it… A: Me too! I’d get rid of all of my goth fans though [Laughs]. D: Are you part of a specific ’80s/gothic scene? A: For sure. We’re all under the umbrella of post-punk, there’s a movement happening in the US. D: Are there people who are in their 50s and 60s attending your shows? How do you feel about that? A: Absolutely. I appreciate that a lot. If anyone can comment on this music, it’s someone who grew up in the ’80s and has these references, especially from a live perspective. I never saw any concert in the ’80s, so it’s nice to get that approval from someone who’s a veteran in the scene.

Anouk Friedli
Theatre director Anouk Friedli graduated from Ritcs School of Arts in 2016, then earned a master’s degree in writing. As a theatre director, Friedli is drawn to the beauty of hidden human desires, which she explores in the context of a continuous struggle between humanity and the rigid ideologies that have weaved our socio-cultural fabric over the years. She believes that the mission of theatre is ‘to hold up a mirror to society and to tell a subjective truth, which shouldn’t necessarily be understood, but rather felt.’ Friedli’s latest piece, Alex Moons, is both an ode to imagination and a critique of the restraining power of hierarchical systems in contemporary society. In Friedli’s enchanting musical odyssey, we witness a shift in the traditional hierarchy of power, where visionary mushroom growers and erotic activists now hold the upper hand to illustrate the force of emancipatory counterculttural sounds. Following her urge to speak out against hierarchical patriarchy, Friedli presents us with an alternative to our male-dominated hierarchical system. For one night, imagination reigns free and reality as we know it takes on a completely new, subversive form.

Jaouad Alloul
Multidisciplinary performer Jaouad Alloul started his creative journey as a drag queen, diving into the world of acting and singing soon thereafter. His personal experiences have always been the driving force behind his work. Torn between his Islamic background and his budding sexuality, he stepped away from his family and religion in search of himself and his place in this world. Out of his personal experiences grew a belief in God rather than religion, which he says numbs the expression of our sexuality and gender. Alloul believes that ‘everyone is its own unique godly person’, created in resemblance of the all-accepting God. To break taboos around oftentimes oppressed societal narratives, Alloul fosters a dialogue around themes of sexuality, gender, identity and self-acceptance. He works towards nurturing our emotional intelligence to prevent the collapse of our collective values as human beings. His premiere, De Meisje, is a poetic reflection on Alloul’s life, which speaks of family, forgiveness, love and hope. ‘If you give yourself the freedom to explore your identity instead of forming one according to how society wants it to be, you create a sense of happiness that comes from within.’ November also sees the release of his EP #messias, a collaboration with producer Aiko Devriendt.

Mira Bryssinck
Theatre maker/actress Mira Bryssinck is fascinated with the absurd. She was always drawn to ‘la condition humaine’, the existential dilemma of simultaneously wanting and not wanting to be, and contradictions fuel her creative work, allowing her to poetically reflect on important societal issues in a joint moment of contemplation with the audience. On her quest to better understand the human existence, Bryssinck delves beyond the façade to bring forth emotions and experiences that we oftentimes (un)intentionally wish to escape. Made in collaboration with dramaturg Daan Borloo, Glory Box is ‘an image of a constant struggle with loneliness’, an intimate meditation on the effects that isolation can have on a person. For Bryssinck, loneliness is an overwhelming feeling ‘that disconnects you from where you are and from whom you’re with’. In Glory Box, we see a woman gradually losing her sense of reality without ever knowing whether she’s trapped in the surrounding darkness of a building or within the inescapable labyrinth of her own mind and body. Yet humor also shines through her work. On her quest ‘to express the inexpressible’, Bryssinck communicates emotionally-intense moments of life in which we always recognise ourselves.

For Love at First Sight, Montignards#3 is comprised of theatre director Jonathan van der Horst, assistant Rani Decock, and actors Tim Bogaerts, Lien Thys and Marie Pien. In their piece The Last Tall Man, the voices of three distinct characters coalesce into a joint social commentary trying to comprehend the complexities of the contemporary world. Hiding behind his intellect, an old white man feels his world slipping away as he enters into a boxing match with a relentless interviewer, who seeks to counter white male privilege through her sharp interrogations. Floating above is an angelic being, the consciousness of the world, holding the key to thousands of years of history and knowledge, which she uses to give a sense of distance and context to the raging battle on stage. Marie: For me, being an artist means to have an opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings on stage in ways other than the daily ones. Tim: To keep actively searching for answers in life, even if you can’t always find them. Jonathan: About changing and bringing new perspectives. Lien: The moment of mutual connection and exchange of feeling between the audience and the performers.

Hannah Vanspauwen In a world driven by excessive consumption and increasing detachment from reality, designer Hannah Vanspauwen returns to core values of morality, truth and honesty, seeking to infuse meaning and emotion into the oftentimes soulless industry of contemporary fashion. Working with post-consumer textile waste, last year’s finalist of the H&M Design Award strives for a more sustainable future within the fashion world, where consumerist logic is replaced by a genuine connection with the garment. A collaborative project between Hannah and her sister Geraldine, Paule Josephe’s latest shirt collection carries an aura of authoritative femininity, somewhat fragile yet tough in its execution, speaking to the need of rediscovering intimacy between the consumer and the clothing.

Where do you draw inspiration from? H: It comes from my general life. Paintings, music, the energy from my friends, all my travels. I recently went to Russia and I was fascinated by the work of painter Natalia Goncharova – the colours she uses, the natural imagery. I’m really inspired by that. I also live surrounded by nature, and a lot of that scenery comes into my embroideries. How do these different cultural influences feed into your designs? H: I think that’s not something you can directly recognise. Film, perhaps, is more of a concrete influence, while philosophy relates more to my own values and the values I want to communicate through my clothes. With music and poetry, it’s more about the vibe. It’s all interconnected. Fashion is important because it has the ability to connect with all artistic mediums. Clothing is always present, and in that sense, fashion is a very powerful tool. What’s your reflection on the fashion industry today? H: Philosopher Jean Baudrillard says that we’re moving to a phase where everything has lost its meaning – ethnic symbols, for example, get torn away from their original meaning and are used for plain aesthetics. I’ve created an additional phase,

where I see fashion as visual fiction. Fiction can change things in reality, especially in our society today, where what we see is largely what we know. Through a certain story, fiction can help represent people in ways they haven’t been represented before. For me, fashion is about going from the meaningless phase to the idea of fashion as visual fiction, a tool to break boundaries. How do we see these ideas in your own designs? H: I look for honesty. There’s so much material in the world that you can re-use. That gives more

value to the piece, instead of less, as many now believe. That’s a boundary I want to break – to tell new stories through the old ones which already inhabit the shirts I use. It’s a story I might not know, but it’s still there. At its very core, what should fashion be about? H: Honesty – in what you produce, in how you produce, in what you want to say. I think that we don’t feel any connection any more, that’s why we throw clothes away so easily. I don’t want to participate in this abundance. I want people to

feel a personal connection with the garment. How did your education at KASK contribute to your vision? H: KASK taught me to work really hard. I especially loved my last year there, when I was working on my master collection. I chose Marina Yee as my mentor. She talked a lot about not trying to fit into the fashion industry, and I always felt the same way. She forced me to get out of my comfort zone while allowing me to stay true to myself. Learning from someone whom I respect inspired me a lot, contributing, in a way, to what I aspire to do now and in the future. Marina Yee and Bram Jespers, my second mentor, were very critical and honest about my work, but always in the most respectful way, which often isn’t the case in fashion education. I evolved so much more when there was a positive atmosphere instead of a fear to show my work. My teachers were always supportive and encouraging. I’m very grateful for that.

This summer, 11 young actors have pitched their tents at CAMPING SUNSET to do what they like to do best: act. Based on the proposition that a performer truly becomes a performer by confronting an audience, the rehearsal and public performances have been turned upside down. After just two weeks’ rehearsals, we’re invited to come see them play each night for a span of three weeks. They’ll bring us their interpretation of Summerfolk, a piece written by Maxim Gorky in 1904 that dramatises the lives of a group of Russian petite bourgeoisie who are spending their summer in a country dacha. Like the Summerfolk characters, the 11 actors are escaping the city for a five-week getaway at the Lübeck site – which is located on the outskirts of Ghent – to have fun in the sun, talk about life and explore Gorky’s piece. Peenoise comprises Gilles, Cesar and Titus, three brothers who hail from a lineage of theatre performers – although music was always their first love. They began experimenting with sound when they were rugrats, which developed into the formation of a grown-up band two years ago. Minimal synth lines, crunchy guitars and melancholic vocals are the ingredients of their dark and intimate sound that conjures uncanny yet comforting memories of the future. Keep an eye on the release of their first debut album at the beginning of 2020.

Cowgirl Clue describes herself as ‘a genie inside of a lava lamp making tunes’, and in a weird way we get what she means. Texas-born Ashley Rose Calhoun creates her own magic fairyland through bubblegummy Vada Vada (she’s the girlfriend of The Garden’s Wyatt Shears), glitter eyeshadow and cute, colourful music videos in which she often appears as an elf. It’s no surprise that she calls Deee-Lite her all-time top influence. Under the moniker Wu-Wu, Calhoun achieved local fame with her EP Limelite in 2016, but it’s her recent debut album, Icebreaker, that really caught our attention. The wacky beats, corny lyrics and playful aesthetic feel as if you’re at a crazy Hawaiian party with some fellow aliens.

Wobby is an independent Dutch risograph-printed magazine for visual arts and literature created by artists Jeroen de Leijer, Marjolein Schalk and Steppie Lloyd Trumpstein. Four times a year they let national and international artists work around a theme, ranging from ‘Wicked Women’ to ‘Fear my Dear’. Wobby is an approachable way to discover established and upcoming talent from the fields of visual arts, comics, illustration and literature, all with a weird sense of humour in common. Among their Belgian discoveries are Joëlle Dubois, Ward Zwart and Tieten Met Haar. In addition, Wobby organises various projects and events to bring artists and their audiences together. Who wouldn’t want to visit Wobbyaanland, or their zine fest Wobby Wonderland?

Amapiano
While gqom is reaching sound systems worldwide – DJ Lag even made a gqom track for Beyoncé (go figure) – South Africa’s house scene is once again reinventing itself. Originating just last year, the sound known as ‘amapiano’, or ‘piano’ to the hip, inherits its genetics from lineages of music made and popularised in Joburg’s townships. It’s a mix of gqom drum patterns and kwiato basslines with a late ’90s South African house tempo, all mixed in with the jazzy, soulful sound of a piano. Where as gqom was more suited for sweaty nightclubs, amapiano is preferably consumed during a laid-back listening session at home or in the chill, summery open air. Start digging amapiano with tunes from producers like VigroDeep, The Lowkeys, De Mthuda, DJ Mariphosa, Spooko, Tall Arse Tee or JazziDisciples. And oh, apparently there’s no escaping amapiano when in a Joburg cab.

Stephanie Smit is what we call a true creative, pulling off stand-up comedy and acting gigs before taking up her latest alias, Giek_1, which focuses on contemporary music and performance. She explores vivid and meditative lyrics and a deeply personal, trance, gabber and R&B nostalgia infused with experimental ambient pop. Her confronting and passion-fuelled live sets touch upon the borders of a trippy rave party, questioning the audience’s existence on the dance floor. Over the last two years Giek_1 has featured on Soul Feeder and OXYORANGE compilations, and she’s currently working on a series of no less than seven EPs alongside 15 videos, including a virtual reality experience, to be released later this year.

we visit you Linde Stevens Tell us, what do you do in life? L: I’m starting my third bachelor’s degree in photography at Narafi Brussels. In my free time I work on my personal photo series and I do some small jobs as a photographer. I’ve also started to do a bit of model scouting recently, which is a very fun thing to do. What do you like best about your place? L: I live in Brussels and Antwerp and I like both my places for different reasons. In Antwerp, I have my vinyl and my cat. In Brussels, I have a lot of plants and a fish called Swim Shady. My house is located on Sint-Katelijneplein in the heart of Brussels so I don’t have to walk too far for food or activities. There’s a rooftop terrace where me and my housemates have a lot of barbecues and drinks in the summer. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? L: I kind of listen to everything. But if I must choose one band, I choose The Smiths as my all time faves! What’s the first record you bought? L: I had to ask my parents and they told me it was an album by K3. Big fan!
