Was it loud and clear? Did it change your hearts and minds? Did it provide you with new insights? Something new to listen to? Did it challenge you, provoke you or annoy you? Or were you just enjoying the pictures, casually flipping through the pages while your friend was getting cocktails at the bar of De Nieuwe Anita? It doesn’t matter either way. As long as you were dipping your toes into the Subbacultcha universe. Cause it’s been quite the ride. And we were happy to have you with us. As a celebration, we’ve made this publication. It’s a thoroughly subjective selection of everything we have ever printed. The process of making alone was cleansing. Like a spring cleaning that makes way for what’s next. Have you rode a horse before? Yes, we had a horse growing up. Its name was Babe. It died in a snowstorm.
There’s nothing wrong with hobbies. They help relieve the stress of everyday life and provide us with entertainment in these godless times of economic crisis and cultural animosity. Myself, I’ve never consciously had a hobby. Sure, I engage in a lot of activities that others might qualify as hobbies, but I’ve always had the naïve conviction that there should be no worktime and no playtime. There should be just one time and it’s called a lifetime. And while I am living that lifetime I am well aware that I’ve got no time to lose.

The last two years were pretty strange years for me. Close friends passed away, my dog passed away, I was integrated into the proper adult world as a father, while not feeling all that ready for it. There’ s a lot of tension with finding your way, thinking you’ll never find it. That fine dust ended up infiltrating me. It’s inevitable. You can’t sew up the cracks, its gonna seep in finally and get inside your brain.

Yeah, it really stirred up emotions of anxiety. What about Bambi?
Hmm, well I just remember my hero Mickey wearing an ass-masking dress. That changed something in my perception of men. And also that he wasn’t in a space/time-continuum that was familiar to me. Yeah, it was like a very bad dream where you were chased by dracula and then you’d trip and fall and fall forever.

Oh no, I wouldn’t say that. I think aggression and violence, when involved directly with it, can be a way of... because it is so chaotic and so much is going on, it can be a way to forget yourself and commit yourself to the now. I guess that’s why it makes sense to me.

I am alarmingly close to the amp when London-based singer Farai belts out her famous ‘battle cry’ during a rehearsal at the Music Complex in Deptford, South London. Producer Tone gets deep into his synth magic, as if he is performing sorcery rather than music. ‘Wait,’ Farai interjects. ‘Is this working?’ And ‘how should I end this?’ Tone assuredly responds with: ‘just vibe it. You don’t even have to sing. Go in and touch the crowd. Be Jim Morrison. Be a rock star baby.’

We want to distort your mind with what we’re doing with our guitars and what not. We want to expand your idea of what you’re supposed to be getting from a rock ’n’ roll band. Because I think a lot of bands will give the audience what they want, but we prefer to give the audience what we think they need.

There’s so much sexual harassment today, the soft dick rock is the friendly relationship you can have with this charged symbol, you can hold hands with it and it won’t get hard. It’s not a parody, though, I just want to take it down a notch. No middle fingers, just soft dicks.

I don’t quite understand. How do you stay true to yourself? In the light of an artist seen as an economic product, I mean? All of us as artists are stuck between two things. My authentic art has no financial framework. It doesn’t matter if I get paid for it, but then there’s the practical part of my life where money equals freedom to a certain extent and power to a certain extent. This album was a battle in that sense. When do I sell things? What I’ve decided to accept is that with every step I would make mistakes. I put to much pressure on myself, I think. Well, yesterday I was in a gondola, but that isn’t particularly wild. I live in London now and I grew up on the countryside. And when I lived there I did a lot of hiking and went hunting with my father and my dog. And now instead of that, I go shopping for clothes and visit cocktail bars. It kills your sense of adventure.
I have a soft spot for college basketball that leaves me without most of my March, because I’m glued to a TV or constantly checking the Internet for scores all month (that’s tournament time!)... And then sometimes I’ll eat an XL pizza, all by myself, after coming home from the bar, late at night. Late-night snack fest.
Are you also interested in thoughts, feelings and actions? As a kid I would walk around at night and walk past people’s houses and I’d be dying to know what happened there – like, if someone was folding clothes or eating a bowl of cornflakes, anything like that. I haven’t gotten passed this idea that everybody is unknown or mysterious. When I have the opportunity I like the questions to be able to go deeper without making someone feel uncomfortable or violated.
We’ve been spending a lot of time at Secret Project Robot Art Experiment, this art space-slash-studio complex in Brooklyn where we play together and record stuff. The weather has been great so we’ve been barbecuing a lot. Vashti makes these amazing tofu and pineapple shish kebabs, she marinades them in something magic. You can add pretty much any kind of vegetable to them, we’ve had these with peppers, asparagus, onions. Tofu and pineapple and asparagus might sound like a strange mix but it actually tastes really good! We just eat these shish kebabs straight off the stick, sitting on a folding chair in this sunny communal gravelled lot right in the middle of Brooklyn. I guess that’s what our music is like too: a skewer of five musicians with some instruments, including a saxophone, making a lot of skronky noise, and somehow it all comes together! Now that you got me thinking about food and cooking, I might look into recording some madsounding kitchen appliances for our repertoire. Where can I find a blender around here?

The other day I saw a woman holding a newborn baby. Every time there was a change in the environment, it got upset. This child didn’t know the difference between the tram riding by or feeling hungry, a deeply confusing situation to be in. As people it pays to have some sense of understanding, to know this is my own hand, this is how gravity works. But there’s also danger about preconceived ideas in that they can allow you to miss what’s actually there.

What draws you to all this discomfort?
and it would be dishonest to not address it. I mean, it’s an unusual topic in the context of underground music now, but it certainly wasn’t in the industrial scene in the ’70s and ’80s, and that’s what a lot of punks were about. That’s music that’s always been interesting to me and continues to interest me.
More than anything else, being excessively familiar with it. As a child, I was overly exposed to things I should not have been exposed to, so it feels normal. I don’t feel ‘damaged’ but my boundaries are probably wider than they should be. One thing about holidays: Every moment of existence should be treated with the same reverence with which we treat summer hoidays. Remaking our understanding of ‘holiday’ means rejecting the image of ourselves we inherit from dominator culture that of a worker, someone whose leisure must be compartmentalised into units, and who is somehow deserving exclusion from paradise. Paradise - summer holiday - is a state of mind that can be claimed by any one of us.

The memories I have from that period have been untouched by all my other experiences; they exist in a separate part of my brain, which is why I wanted to base my music on them. They are feelings that I cannot describe in words, so I just try to make music about them instead. When you are a child you don’t judge the world around you, you just take it as your reality and I think that’s beautiful.
