SMALL TALK
THIS ISSUE
Small Talk by Kurt Vile. Mr Vile sent us this image when we asked him about small talk. We can not really link one to the other besides the assumption that Kurt either doesn’t like small talk or that he thinks small talk is pure poetry. Whatever it is, we wanted to share the insight. ‘I think this is one of the best album covers, because it displays the perfect image of a mad genius. A typewriter, faded acne, pill bottles, chocolates and coffee strewn all over the place. You just get the vibe he’s been up for days writing his beautiful insane poetry.’
EDITOR’S NOTE Last night I woke from a dream where I was at a Bill Callahan concert. He was playing inside this big hole in the ground, with the audience gathered around it. I am really enjoying it, when all of a sudden the people around me start talking. You know, about petty things like new shoes and ex-girlfriends. I try to ignore it, but the talking just gets louder and louder, up to a point where I can no longer hear the music. I want it to stop, so I start screaming: “Shut up, shut up!”. But I can’t even hear my own voice. Sweat starts pouring down my face and then I wake up. I’m in my bed. And the silence wraps itself around me like a warm blanket. I play Bill Callahan on the stereo and the sun is rising.

People: New interns. All we have to say is…this machine is on a roll!
DVD: Mad Men 4 Ok, so Jon Hamm aka Don Draper is a pretty lousy actor. And not all of the story lines are of the same standard. But damn, Mad Men is so bloody addictive! We received the new series, watched in a frenzy and now we’re craving for the next.

New phenomenon: Hipster Joggers With the sun being out more often these days, we sometimes set up shop on our sidewalk terrace. And while sitting there we’ve started to notice a new phenomenon: Hipster Joggers. You know, big glasses, tight neon leggings, bandana… the works. And you thought we were hipsters.
Playboy Bunny Hey Subbacultcha! Gotta love the weed + alcoholz. We can hardly even begin to tell you how psyched we are about this show. But we’ll try. LA-based Luis Vasquez’s solo project The Soft Moon is all about great songs, great art work and great videos. His selftitled debut album is yet to get a proper release over here in the Netherlands, but who cares! It’s out there. And it’s one of the best records we’ve heard in a long time. Also on are local favourites The Moi Non Plus, who know a thing or two about pulsating grooves and sinister soundscapes, too. So wise up kids and come on down, cause this is THE show to see this month.

WHITE CAR
Tri Angle records released some of the most talked-about albums of last year. But what else would you expect from a label that uses a triangle as their logo? Anyway, their new prodigy is named Holy Other. His work fits right into the realm that most of this record company’s artists explore: creepy melodies, eerie soundscapes, drowsy beats and screwed-up vocals, all giving you the feeling you’re listening to something that’s not quite human. If you’re
Elon Katz and Orion Martin make the kind of electronic music that can only be made using analogue equipment. From their socalled ‘techno dungeon’ in Chicago, these guys bring on the funk. Not like James Brown, more like a 1980s industrial band mixing that shit up with some groovy
Detroit techno. They’ve already gloom-and-doomed their way through two excellent EPs, so it’s about time you catch on. white-car.net
DOG LEATHER
The powerful vocals of Shannon Funchess remind us of one hit wonder Q Lazzarus, who recorded the beautiful song ‘Goodbye Horses’. Backed up by the highly danceable synths and drum machine rhythms of Bruno Coviello, we dare you not to move to this perfect blend of Italo disco and pop music. Let’s hope they will take a little break from their ongoing tour schedule and take some time to record an album. www.myspace.com/lightasylum

CHELSEA WOLFE
Sometimes supergroups are awesome. Sometimes they’re not. Dog Leather are not a supergroup, but they are one hell of a combination though. Their latest album has lots of paranoid beats and distorted rapping, but also some laid-back tracks to catch your breath. We’ve written about DJ Dog Dick and Sewn Leather before, and with their solo projects they were two vile sons of bitches already. But together… I guess this team up was inevitable. ehserecords.com
LIGHT ASYLUM If there’s one band likely to get their shit together in 2011, it’s Light Asylum. Having just released the In Tension EP, the duo have created a lot of buzz lately.
Chelsea Wolfe is a singer-songwriter hailing from Los Angeles, California. Her personal details are unknown, but she makes doom-folk songs that would have got you burned at the stake a few centuries ago. These slow-paced ballads are, without a doubt, bewitching in every sense of the word and make all those pretentious witch house bands look like your average bible camp. Her new limited edition 10” Apokalypsis is coming out this summer. www.myspace.com/chelseawolfe

NEW MUSIC
FELT DRAWINGS Dominic Tiberio is a Los Angeles native playing synth pop songs about heartbreaks and long-lost girlfriends. Where have we heard this before? Yup, it won’t be a surprise that the man behind Felt Drawings is close friends with Former Ghosts’ Freddy Ruppert. We’re not saying these two bands are like two drops of water but we can definitely see the connection. His new album Body is out now and takes the synth pop genre on a pretty successful trip to hip hop and R&B. www.feltdrawings.com
NIGHT GALLERY
with occasional darker themes, bring us straight back to watching fairytale movies on a Sunday morning wearing our Ninja Turtles PJs. www.myspace.com/nitegallery
FRIENDO Oh how we cried when Women broke up. One of our favourite bands of the past decade, shot to pieces. Well I guess that’s just the way things are sometimes. But luckily enough, most of the band members are still involved in other projects. Like drummer Mike Wallace, who’s in this great band called Friendo. They play pretty noisy psychedelic pop songs. Lots of dissonant melodies. You know, the kind of stuff your mom calls ‘out of tune’. But it’s pretty engaging nonetheless. Come check them out live at OT301 in July! friendo.bandcamp.com/album/ cold-toads
THERAPIES SON
22 END
I guess we are all getting tired of those ’80s-inspired synth pop bands that’ve taken over the blogs the last couple of years. We said goodbye to the ’00s a few months ago and it’s probably time to start reproducing some other forgotten era. There are a few exceptions to the rule, though, and Night Gallery are one of them. The warm and tropical synth melodies, combined
Therapies Son is Alex Jacob from California who’s just released an amazing psych-pop EP called Over the Sea. He recorded it all on his own. Which is truly amazing, considering the fact that a) the melodies are outstanding, b) sonically it’s very challenging and c) he’s only 19 years old! This music sure makes a lot of the lo-fi chillwave kids sound like a bunch of fucking amateurs. therapiesson.bandcamp.com
THE SMALL TALK ISSUE
SHUT THE FUCK UP
ONE e are the Facebook generation. Social cohesion is turning into an abstract and virtual idea instead of an actual real-life experience. We fight over the phone in a busy street, we talk about our alcoholic uncles, anorexic friends and nightly adventures on a full train. We are alone if we think we are, even if we are surrounded by millions. Social experience is in our heads and we stop noticing the world around us. It is understandable though. The world is crowding up, morals are fading and the brainless masses rule the ‘real world’. So a virtual social structure seems the perfect saviour for you... and your friends.

Okay, we’re here because of your new album w h o k i l l (4AD). I reckon the title is a metaphor, but I have to know: did you kill or are youabout to kill anyone or anything? Just to set things straight right from the start, to keep in mind when asking you these questions, as well as from a karma point of view. Phew. (Does this sound tedious?) 34
Yes, that is a metaphor. I didn’t actually kill anybody nor am I about to. I take care of my karma. It used to be ‘Women Whokill’ then it changed to ‘Cities Whokill’. It just seemed like this word that could mean everything instead of making it a narrow definition. It could be a lot of things. To me it could be a bird call (imitates a singing bird). It’s also about killing parts

of myself in this way of leaving the past behind. With leaving the past behind you mean moving from Montreal to California? Yes, but also the change in my life of now being more in the public eye. People are listening to me now. (smiles) Even without the paint strokes on your face you have quite an impressive appearance. I got a bit scared on our way over here. So, I’m definitely listening! But I guess you’re referring to the fact you’ve been picked up by 4AD, an established record label with artists like Ariel Pink, Deerhunter and Gang Gang Dance. (roars with laughter) Just the fact that I’m here with you is a new level of exposure than I was maybe expecting.
I don’t quite understand. How do you stay true to yourself? In the light of an artist seen as an economic product, I mean? All of us as artists are stuck between two things. My authentic art has no financial framework. It doesn’t matter if I get paid for it, but then there’s the practical part of my life where money equals freedom to a certain extent and power to a certain extent. This album was a battle in that sense. When do I sell things? What I’ve decided to accept is that with every step I would make mistakes. I put to much pressure on myself, I think.
Would you rather sell your tunes to Apple? I don’t know. I think that’s just as bad. Bad because they’re made for little money by people in China. If I continue to say no, it’s my form of protest. But when I made some money with I really like the jubilant and upbeat my first record, and off Blackberry, I vibe of the song ‘Bizness’. “I DIDN’T ACTUALLY KILL ANYBODY NOR AM I ABOUT TO. I TAKE CARE OF MY KARMA” Nowadays a lot of artists, especially ones in the chillwave genre, are using spacings and symbols in their band names. Are you maybe the one who catalysed this trend after the ‘The’ revival? I’m like why did I ever do that? A lot of questions are asked about this. I wonder what the other artists say about their goofy-looking band names. But is there a message behind it besides the attention it generates? Again tedious. What it is, is the effort I put in it. At first it was to get attention. No one knew about me. It looks visually different. I’m just a woman with a ukulele. Why on earth would people listen to me? Is the ukulele to you what the harp is to Joanna Newsom? Also, what’s up with all the sax sounds on the album? For me it was easy. I like the sound of the ukulele. It has this childlike quality that I like a lot. You can make it sound sweet and angry at the same time. For this album I wanted background singers, but then I went with
the saxophone, two, actually! They have little voices. I learned to love their nasal sound. Was the progression from lo-fi to a more hi-fi sound a natural one? I resisted it! I didn’t want that to happen. I think people will be put off by the professional sound. (laughs) I think I’ll go back to that way of recording. Well, you know it is what it is. And it’s quite wonderful. We shook our booties at the office. Your first album, you put out there with a paywhat-you-want construction (like Radiohead). Now with 4AD you’re on the payroll? Are you now a corporate wage slave? If you put it that way it feels gross. (laughs) I won’t ask if they make you wear certain clothes then. How are you on the collaborating front? I used to do everything myself, but for w h o k i l l I brought a framework to Nate, my bass player. He had a big role in the recording process. It still is hard to come to terms with the fact I CONTINUE 37

roll over, all in a month. -Wow, smart pup. What else are you up to? -I just got a job at Gumbo Ya Ya – it’s a Cajun restaurant here in Lexington. Doing about 30 hours a week. It’s temporary. -Like it? -It’s great. I’m friends with everyone

and the food is delicious. Also I make tips, which helps a lot. -Nice. Do you feed your puppy food from Gumbo Ya Ya? -Ha, nope. Not yet, anyways. Maybe some jambalaya soon. -Cool. I saw the artwork for your album Paddywhack. Who’s done it? -Ah, yes. Robert Beatty. He does some amazing airbrush art, among other things. You should google him. Lexington dude… also check out the collective Resonant Hole. -I will. What is Kentucky like right now? -It’s raining cats and dogs. And horses. And basketball. Actually, basketball’s just ended… we made it to the Final Four for the first time in 15 years. That’s a big deal, if you don’t know… -You’ve toured Holland before. How did it go? -I love it! All of my shows so far have been great. Everyone is super nice and speaks English perfectly. If I lived in Europe, I might live in Holland. -Yes! So, what music are you listening to now? -I’ve been trying to get suggestions on where to start with Nick Cave. I love what I’ve heard. I want to dive in. I’ve been listening to Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk a lot, still. I may never stop. Also, this new local group called Street Gnar. Actually, Case has been doing Street Gnar solo for a long time. But, now he has a full band and it
completely kicks ass. Even more. Cuz it kicked ass before, too… -What’s been your favourite food lately? -Grilled cheese. Because I can make it at home and it’s cheap. I want some good sushi, but it’s 3.30 am and I won’t be able to find any. I like cereal…I’m like a big kid. Is there good Thai food in Holland? I love Thai food. Mmmm. -Tie food? Thai food? I don’t understand. -Ty food. Like the beanie babies. Do you know what a beanie baby is? -What’s a beanie baby? -A little stuffed baby animal. They were hugely popular here in the ’90s. Grandmas would buy hundreds of them for their kids. They would sell for thousands on eBay. Like Tickle Me Elmo. -I see. Did you have beanie babies? -No, but I did collect Pokemon cards. I got a bunch of ‘holographics’ and sold them in middle school to kids for $20 each. I remember making about $120. I was 12! What the heck… -Well, this concludes our interview. Any parting words? -Yes. Zie je in mei! Idiot Glee plays on 14 May at the Walk The Line Festival alongside Teeth, Creep, Crystal Fighters and many, many more. MUSIC NEW RELEASES These are the new releases that you can’t afford to miss By Carly Blair
SECRET CITIES
Strange Hearts (Western Vinyl)
The sophomore offering from this North Dakota trio maintains the breezy, eclectically orchestrated baroque pop of their debut. Instrumentally and production-wise, Strange Hearts is clearly indebted to sweet ’60s pop, but unlike so many contemporary bands mining this fruitful musical era, they capture not only the sound, but also the feeling of the music of those times and then transcend it. It’s too easy - too lazy - to write off a band using the musical tools of a bygone era as derivative. The music here is, quite simply, too complex and relevant to a modern audience, and for me, it’s deeply moving. Their debut was under-appreciated; I sincerely hope this even more wonderful album brings them the attention they deserve.
BILL CALLAHAN Apocalypse (Drag City)
On his latest, Bill Callahan (aka Smog) continues to hone his own heavy-hearted take on the American folk tradition. He’s said about the gorgeous album closer ‘One Fine Morning’ - ‘I wanted that open feeling Westerns give you. They’re kind of minimalist because the landscape is so blank and stark, which means that when people appear, they stand out, and their personalities are magnified because there’s nothing much else around.’ In a way, this statement sums up my impression of Apocalypse as a whole: Callahan’s luscious baritone and his insightful and often humorous storytelling stand out against the slow tempos and stripped-down instrumentation like a silhouette against a sunset.
THE WEEKND
House of Balloons (self-released)
52
This mysterious Toronto collaboration has risen rather meteorically to internet fame in indie circles and beyond, presumably due to
their fashionable blend of leftfield indie and R&B, plus their underground-friendly marketing (everything is free), promotion (basically, a download link), and aesthetics (tasteful, beautiful, sexy photos). And why not? The way they wed the aggressive sexiness, debauched glamour and shamelessly eager, pretty vocals of R&B - things usually considered embarrassingly zealous by indie rock fans - to the more understated beauty of bedroom electronic recording projects and a more self-conscious viewpoint is refreshing and addictive.
MUSIC NEW RELEASES
PANDA BEAR Tomboy (Paw Tracks)
Noah Lennox must’ve felt quite a bit of pressure to top 2007’s beloved Person Pitch. As a testament to the ridiculous amount of hype surrounding this follow-up, bootlegged and early versions of several of the songs on it have been pored over in the blogosphere for years. This approach seems as weirdly obsessive and possibly self-defeating as checking up on a girl every six months in anticipation of her eventually becoming a beautiful woman. Thankfully, I mostly avoided it, and skipped ahead to the good part: the all-grown-up Tomboy doesn’t disappoint. More cosmic and less swampy, more constrained but no less ambitious than its predecessor, it shows that Lennox (and Animal Collective) are still rulers of the territory between experimental and pop music.
GANG GANG DANCE Eye Contact (4AD)
Gang Gang Dance are never short on ambition. That the lead single for their latest was not the poppiest ditty but rather the sprawling, genre-defying 11-minute opus ‘Glass Jar’ made it clear from the get-go: man up! You’re going to need to bring your A-game to wrap your ears around the shit we’re about to unleash upon you! Production whiz Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Beach House etc.) is behind the boards again, lending the album a sound that’s cleaner than their previous re-

leases. The band’s eclectic mix of heavy tribal percussion, R&B, electronica and Lizzi Bougatsos’ Eastern-influenced vocals morph into new and consistently interesting configurations from track to track. While not particularly cohesive, it’s definitely one of the most exciting records of 2011 so far.
MUSIC NEW RELEASES
CRYSTAL STILTS
In Love with Oblivion (Slumberland)
Like many other (NYC) bands, this fuzzy, neo-psychedelic rock outfit garnered comparisons to various late-’70s to mid-’80s musical godheads (e.g. The Velvet Underground, Joy Division, The Clean) upon the release of their 2008 debut. They were even praised for being especially proficient copycats. While their second release retains the monotonic vocals and instrumental signifiers of their debut, its improved song craft and wealth of addictive melodies makes the accusation of ‘wearing your influences on your sleeve’ seem just as superficial as the metaphor inadvertently implies - the stylish trappings of these songs are an enhancement rather than a substitute for their underlying virility.
CASS MCCOMBS Wit’s End (Domino)
Cass McCombs has developed a reputation for being extremely forthcoming in his lyrics and extremely private in person. This odd mix of reclusiveness and confessionalism has helped McCombs quietly build up a cult following. His fifth-anda-half album is perhaps his darkest, lyrically-speaking, but the depressing subject matter is often obfuscated by gentle and sweet instrumentation. Given McCombs’ unwillingness to share, and the contrast with the relatively upbeat nature of his last album, I can only speculate he’s suffered some rocky times of late. In any case, while being pulled in such different directions sounds good, it ultimately leaves me feeling somewhat unsatisfied.

THE ARBOR
(Clio Barnard, 2010) (Verve Pictures)
FILM DVDS TO SEE Door Gert Verbeek
THE HUNTER
(Rafi Pitts, 2010) (Artificial Eye)

Serves: 4 hipster goths Ingredients: 1 large courgette, sliced lengthwise into ribbons with a peeler 2 medium-sized carrots, sliced lengthwise into ribbons with a peeler 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 small handful of dried porcini mushrooms 300 g Arborio rice Approx. 700 ml vegetable stock 1 tsp tomato puree
1 tsp rosemary Olive oil Butter Parmesan Salt and pepper Before you do anything else, soak the porcini mushrooms in a bowl of hot water for an hour or so. Drain and chop them, mix the remaining water into your vegetable stock.
WHAT’S COOKING? WE ARE COOKING FOR.... oOoOO
Preheat your oven to 200 C. Place the courgette and carrot ribbons, two of the garlic cloves and half of the chopped onion in a baking dish, splash with some olive oil, salt and pepper to taste and place them in the oven. Roast until golden brown, stir occasionally. While the vegetables are roasting, prepare your vegetable stock in a small pot. If you’ve got some time on your hands, make a nice basic homemade stock, if you’re short on time, use a good-quality stock cube. Add a teaspoon of tomato puree to give your rice a nice red tinge. Keep the stock boiling on a low flame while you make the risotto. Now it’s time for the risotto. Gently heat a generous splash of olive oil and a knob of butter in a large cooking pot. Add the rosemary, remaining onion and garlic and cook for about 10 minutes. Add the risotto rice, turn up the heat slightly, stir until it’s coated in the oil and turns pearly white. Add the porcini mushrooms. Finally, add a splash of white wine. Stir well until the liquid is absorbed. Add enough stock just to cover the rice, stir and turn down the heat. Maintain the rice at a gentle simmer and stir until the stock has been absorbed. Repeat, adding stock and stirring, for 10 minutes. Keep on tasting your rice and adding small splashes of stock until the rice is al dente. After 5-10 minutes more, when the rice is just cooked but still has some bite, remove from the heat and stir in the butter and cheese. Add the roasted vegetables and stir. Cover with a lid and let it rest for 10 minutes. Remove the lid, sprinkle with more parmesan and eat out of the pot with a wooden spoon. Mamma mia!

Hexnut vs. Edward Burtynsky WRENCH Sunday 22 May, 19.15, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ For the WRENCH project, contemporary composers write music to accompany the epic, almost apocalyptic industrial landscape photos of Edward Burtynsky. The result is a series of astounding interactions between sound and image that portray the results and the dilemmas of modern day society. It doesn’t get more contemporary than this. See this show for only €10. Experience a great concert, check out the marvellous building and get a free drink on the side.
Early Birds Everyone under 30 for €10,- to Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ 68

If you want a preview of the art landscape of the coming decade, go pay this expo a visit. Well worth it. SEWN LEATHER & DJ DOG DICK 11 May – OCCii, Amsterdam Sewn Leather and DJ Dog Dick both walk the same path of synth/ punk/noise destruction. They also operate as a creatively-named duo, Dog Leather. artists that are usually only booked by bigger venues. The experience was so tasty, the people are back for seconds this year, and the lineup looks just as solid. Nice to hail Den Haag for something other than the Queen!
San Francisco duo The Dodos blend interests in African drumming, furiously finger-picked guitar and progressive metal into an unpredictable and unique take on indie rock which is surprisingly exhilarating live. Openers The Luyas are exciting in their own right, specialising in endearingly weird indie pop music featuring a dazzling array of instruments.
KURT VILE & THE VIOLATORS 15 May – Tivoli de Heling, Utrecht 16 May – Bitterzoet, Amsterdam Folk friend and former War on Drugger Kurt Vile will cheer you up with darkness. Don’t miss. (See page 14-17 for more info)
MOUNT KIMBIE + DAEDELUS 12 May – Ekko, Utrecht You can debate as much as you like about the genre you could use to categorise Mount Kimbie: dubstep, ambient, hip hop, experimental… You’d be easier off just calling it electronica. Same for Daedelus; all of the above influences are recognisable in his work as well. One thing’s clear: you’re in for a night of dancing!
THE BLACK LIPS 16 May – Trouw, Amsterdam This garage rock band is about to release their sixth record, Arabia Mountain, which should be a nice addition to the already impressive catalogue of these hillbilly hipsters. The Lips are known for their messy but awesome shows in which they always pull unexpected shenanigans, so come and join the mayhem.
PERE UBU PERFORMING THE MODERN DANCE LIVE 12 May – Patronaat, Haarlem This long-running experimental rock band will perform their classic album The Modern Dance in full, a record considered by many critics to be one of the most influential rock albums of the late ’70s.
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE + TEENGIRL FANTASY 17 May – Paradiso, Amsterdam While various AC members have been focusing on their solo projects lately - which are awesome in their own right - one mustn’t forget the amazing music these experimental pop pioneers have released as a group. Merriweather Post Pavilion made most of 2009’s year end lists and is widely considered to be one of the most important releases of the ’00s. Rietveld-descendants Teengirl Fantasy kick off the night with their intelligent disco oeuvre.
EKE + SOL12 13 May - Bimhuis, Amsterdam CD release show by Amsterdambased avant garde noise/jazz trio EKE. Also playing are sol12 featuring Luc Ex on Bass. WALK THE LINE FESTIVAL ft. Suuns
INDIESTAD FESTIVAL ft. Emeralds, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Caribou, Cults, etc. 18-25 May – various locations, Amsterdam For an entire week, you’re invited to imagine yourself transported to a magical wonderland where as far as the eyes can see, the jeans are skinny, the shoes are Chucks, the cheap beer flows like wine, the tattooed women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano, and the sweet sounds of indie flood the airwaves. Not sure if the dark-framed glasses through which they view the world have a prescription or not, but ’tis a utopian vision in any case. Check their site for the solid indie rock lineup. Highlights: Julianna Barwick (get ready for a transcendent experience), Oneohtrix Point Never (synthpacked waves of drone), Bill Callaghan (the poetry of life, baritone style), Emeralds (electronic drone dreams), Cults (mysterious boy/girl duo finally reveal themselves!) and usual suspects like Toro Y Moi, Ariel Pink, Caribou and Twin Shadow. GANG GANG DANCE 19 May – Melkweg, Amsterdam 50% DISCOUNT FOR ALL MEMBERS
Because Gang Gang Dance has such a diversified sound, it’s unbelievably hard to label this band. Their latest, Eye Contact, drops soon, and it’s even more vital than their percussion-based electronics record, Saint Dymphna. Highlife will open this experimental dance night with his afro-pop tunes. And don’t miss the after-party!
DEUS 24 May - Trouw, Amsterdam Flemish art pop legends dEUS are on the brink of releasing a new record. If you were lucky enough to get some of those scarce tickes, you’re bound to hear some brand new material tonight. PARTS & LABOR 24 May – dB’s, Utrecht These Brooklyn experimental rockers and Jagjaguwar regulars combine noisy guitars and sparse electronics with poppy hooks and delayed vocals and have just released a new album. Support by Lost Bear, an Utrecht-based indie rock band with two drummers, touring in support of their upcoming debut. SECRET CITIES 20 May – Ekko, Utrecht 21 May – De Nieuwe Anita, Amsterdam 22 May – 013, Tilburg Avant pop trio Secret Cities are touring in support of their wonderful new album Strange Hearts. (See page 14-17 for more info) TY SEGALL 20 May – Vera, Groningen 21 May – Paradiso, Amsterdam 22 May – 013, Tilburg THE heir to the throne of the flourishing San Francisco neo-psych garage scene. Segall’s raw but melodic take on rock ‘n’ roll, masterfully displayed on 2010 stand-out Melted, is as simple and effective as a kick in the nuts.

These are just a few genres on offer at the first edition of Here’s Your Future, which should deliver an evening packed with lo-fi drenched music and a worthy excuse to venture outside of the randstad. THE WALKMEN + ROYAL BANGS 23 May – Vera, Groningen 24 May – Melkweg, Amsterdam FREE TICKETS. SEE PAGE 66/67
Over the course of their decadelong run together, NYC’s The Walkmen have served up album after album of singular indie rock, sometimes atmospheric, sometimes brash, but always cathartic. The eclectic and exuberant indie pop of Tennessee trio Royal Bangs should serve as a fitting amuse-bouche.
night is Jelle Buma, playing some mean industrial soundscapes. PETER HOOK & THE LIGHT 28 May - Paard, Den Haag 29 May - Effenaar, Eindhoven Peter Hook is one of the original members of Joy Division, and tonight he will perform the landmark Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures with his current band The Light.
AGENDA SHOWS IN MAY
SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE 28 May – Paradiso 29 May – Vera, Groningen Six Organs of Admittance is a musical project by Ben Chasny. With his experimental folk music, he was one of the pioneers of the New Weird America movement. Come to one of the shows in May if you’re in for some droney, eclectic chanting. 3 NIGHTS IN HEAVEN 24-26 May, Catharinakerk, Eindhoven FREE TICKETS. SEE PAGE 66/67
Bottom line of this three-night event: See three bands in the beautiful setting of a church with great lights and even greater video. Not a bad idea we say. Low will play on 24 May. The amazing very modern classic Ryuchi Sakamoto & Alva Noto on 25 and Absynthe Minded on 26. Head down, let go and live that ‘almost religious’ musical experience.... even for atheists. THANK YOU + JELLE BUMA 25 May - OT301, Amsterdam Baltimore-based Thank You is a wavy post-punk trio signed to the awesome Thrill Jockey records. On their new album Golden Worry, the band further explores their progressive noise rock sound. Opening this
This multi-platform project, initiated by sympathetic Dutch band LPG is a year-long feast of collaboration between talented souls on art, music and literature.
