The Funny Issue

This image shows confetti that was thrown in the air by this month’s featured artists Iris Donker & Katinka van Gorkum. It was supposed to get picked up by the wind and swirl from the sky like a shattered rainbow bringing glory and happiness to those within its reach. But it didn’t. There was no wind. Life can be funny like that. It’s okay to laugh when something’s funny, though. So we decided to make the funny issue. Because you know, a little lightness and laughter is good for the soul.

November recommendations Each month our staff provides you with a selection of the finer things in life. Enjoy!

Music: Valby Vokalgruppe

Music: Sonic Death

We’re about to reveal Copenhagen’s best-kept musical secret, Valby Vokalgruppe. This experimental group is made up of four ladies: Anja Jacobsen, Cæcilie Trier, Lil Lacy and Sonja LaBianca. Their sound resembles a snowball that starts off as a single note and turns into a terrific rolling ball of human voice layers, trance patterns, effects pedals and beats. Think of a choir of Julianna Barwick’s with a lot more pep and oomph than ever before.

Not the Sonic Youth album. According to their bandcamp, these horrible Russian motherfuckers have problems – but thankfully for us, they express these through music. We have no idea what they’re saying and we’re not sure if they’ve ever left St Petersburg, but they sound like a perfectly dark November soundtrack that makes us turn to a liquid vodka diet to keep out the cold. At the moment of writing, they have 666 Facebook ‘likes’. Ùspeh.

Film: American Indie Competition A murder among Beat writers, James Gandolfini and a David Sedaris adaptation: it’s safe to say that the Leiden International Film Festival jury made a fine selection for this year’s American Indie Competition, combining prestigious previews and one-off screenings. Not to be missed is the latest effort by former mumblecore giant Andrew Bujalski, the strange and very funny Computer Chess. Art: Ritual of Queer Rituals

While strolling through the amazing De Herontdekking van de Wereld exhibition in Huis Marseille, we found ourselves getting lost in ‘Moonlit Disk’ by Simon van Til: a big moonshaped reflection screen, photographed using only the light of the moon. For a moment we felt like we were staring into the vast endless universe.

As part of the celebrated exhibition The Temptation of AA Bronson (on at Witte de With in Rotterdam until 05 January), the symposium Ritual of Queer Rituals brings together a group of artists and thinkers who give insight into all things queer in the context of representation, spirituality and the body. The ‘rituals’ in the exhibition include interventions, talks and performances.

Food: Scanwiches

Online architecture magazine Uncube recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. The goal of this online journal is to address ‘architecture and beyond’ and is all about grand ideas, small towns, big architecture and much more. The site’s handsome design is the proverbial cherry on top. It has the ease and the comfort of print, and the high-tech tricks of digital. The only thing that seems to be missing now is an exclamation mark.

Make yourself a creative sandwich, cut it in half, take a photo and there it is: a scanwich. Graphic designer Jon Chonko has dedicated a whole blog to this singular phenomenon: food porn avant la lettre. The blog proved so popular he’s already moved it into print: indulge yourself with Scanwiches. The Book – just in time for National Sandwiches Day on 03 November.

We Saw You: Spotted at Subbacultcha! Photo by Mariska Kerpel

What’s the first record you bought? The Spice Girls. Your first ever music-related memory? Getting annoyed by my brother trying to rap like Eminem. What’s your favourite pastime? Soul-searching and looking for the perfect balance between making art and sipping my drinks. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Unfortunately I’m too restless to be lazy! Any guilty pleasures? Men. Any recent regrets? Yolo. What kind of music makes you cry? The song ‘Avond’ by Boudewijn de Groot. It has a line about lifeless things in the room which goes straight to my heart. What makes you dance? ‘SOS’ by ABBA! At age 16 my best friend Bernice and I enjoyed watching the film Tilsammans a lot. This song is part of it and makes you want to eat life. Which future Subbacultcha! show are you looking forward to? I’m looking forward for Subbacultcha! coming to my beautiful city behind the dunes, The Hague.

Name: Anna de Vries Age: 22 Spotted at: No Age, DOKA, Amsterdam on 15 October Home: The Hague Keywords: ikbenanna.tumblr.com, Wim Wenders, Kawaii, Stanley Kubrick, The Strokes, Long Island Iced Tea, oats with honey, fine arts student, thrill seeking Zodiac sign: Gemini and Goat Anything funny (or unfunny) happen yesterday? The toilet attendant used her megaphone on girls who spent too much time on the toilet. She also had a large assortment of sweet, sour and salty candy and I even won an erotic fridge magnet, so, love ya! Would you care to share a joke or funny personal story? Just kill ’em with kindness. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? ‘Bitches Brew’ by Miles Davis. At times I feel Miles is the only one who understands me. The rhythm of his music is similar to the rhythm of my brain processes. If he was still alive, there’s a big chance we would be best friends.

The Funny Issue. Interview Enigmatic New York singer Arthur Ashin tells us that the entire Autre Ne Veut project is satirical. So in terms of funny things, there’s that. He also told us a very long joke about polar bears. Other than that, he doesn’t really like comedy all that much

Autre Ne Veut Phone Interview by Koen van Bommel Photos shot by Katherine Squire in Austin, USA

I thought it’d be good to start off with a joke. It’s hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs, because they always take things literally. Ha-ha, that’s a good one. Can you tell me a joke? Uhm, I only have one joke, and I’ll give it a whirl, but it’s long. That’s okay. One day in the arctic tundra, Baby Polar Bear comes home from

19

Autre Ne Veut. Continued school. He’s got a worried look on his face. Mama Polar Bear says: ‘What’s wrong?’ Baby asks: ‘Am I a real polar bear?’ Mama says: ‘Of course you are!’ And Baby looks relieved. Mama Polar Bear leaves it at that, but she’s worried and she doesn’t understand. Two days later, Baby Bear and Daddy Bear are in the tundra building a tree igloo, having a good time, when all of a sudden Baby Polar Bear gets the same worried look on his face. Daddy Bear says: ‘What’s wrong?’ Baby asks: ‘Am I a real polar bear?’ Daddy says: ‘Of course, why?’ And Baby says: ‘Nothing, I’m just worried.’ Mama and Daddy have a conversation about this, but conclude everything is okay. A few weeks go by, till there’s a great polar bear family fest. Everyone is eating salmon and having a good time, laughing and whatever, until suddenly in the middle of dinner, baby gets the same worried look on his face. He asks: ‘Mama, Daddy, Grandma, Aunt, am I a real polar bear?’ Everyone says: ‘Yes, of course! Why?’ And Baby Polar Bear says: ‘Because I’m freezing.’ What’s the first thing that jumps into your mind when I say the word ‘funny’? It worries me, because I don’t like comedy. I like laughing and I think people are funny, but I don’t like formalised comedy, it doesn’t feels genuine. You dislike comedians? Well, every once in a while I like a comedian. I was staying at my dad’s house a while ago, and I couldn’t sleep. So I watched this Robin Williams stand-up show and in my weird insomnia haze, it cracked me up. I also like Eddie Murphy and Louis CK, although he seems kind of evil. But even if I think something is good comedy, I don’t think it’s funny. I guess I’m just slightly genetically different from other people. Have you ever tried to work humour or some kind of inside joke into a song?

20

‘I also like it when humour is painful for everyone involved’

21

Autre Ne Veut. Continued

I try to walk a line with my music, to be 100 per cent earnest, but also be 100 per cent tongue-in-cheek at the same time. The entire project is satire. I love satire. I also think it’s funny that a song like ‘Counting’ is kind of a dark joke. It’s a song about my fear of my grandmother dying. But to most people it feels like a sex jam. Wow. Can you describe your sense of humour to us? I like situational humor. As a kid, I was kind of small and effeminate, and even though I was never really picked on, I would do this thing where I’d try to control the situation. Like, trying to control bullies by guilt-tripping them. For some reason I think that’s funny, but it might also be kind of sociopathic. I try not to do it as often nowadays. I Autre Ne Veut plays on 25 November at Rotown in Rotterdam and on 27 Novemalso like it when humour is painber at Trouw in Amsterdam. Huerco S. Continued Kansas City-born lo-fi producer Brian Leeds aka Huerco S. headlines the first installment of our brand new, unclassifiable and genredefying dance night, Somewhere Else (‘cause we always want to be somewhere else, don’t we?). Besides crafting the abstracted collages and strange grooves of his new album Colonial Patterns, Brian’s got a pretty interesting sense of humour. Turns out he thinks a bit of bullying is pretty funny. Oh, and sarcasm. ‘It probably wouldn’t be the first time someone told me I wasn’t funny,’ On these pages we’ve printed a snippet of our interview with Brian, as well as two photos that are part of a great series shot by Daniel Shea in New York, USA

She totally freaked out, jumped up and tore the sheets off. I had to tell her I was kidding. It’s not very funny; it’s actually kind of mean’

Magik Markers. Continued

28

In her novel How Should a Person Be? Sheila Heti states: ‘If you know where the funny is, you know everything.’ Meaning, there has to be a core of funny in art for it to be good. I think it is not 100 per cent true that all art throughout all of history contained a core of comedy to have the sort of subjective and arbitrary mantle of ‘good’. I like the idea that all art must contain a window, or a door, some means to connect to it. I like the idea. Do you think there’s any ‘funny’ in Magik Markers? I guess it depends on how it’s defined. Maybe ‘funny’ has got something to do with taking liberties. There is a weird surface of vulnerability and humility to comedy or being funny, but it belies a subversion and aggression. When we started playing shows, there was this instant antipathy. We would be opening for much more ‘straight’ popular bands and there would be these apoplectic dudes in the audience, just screaming, ‘YOU SUCK!’. We would hand our guitars to the audience, because we were just improvising and thought it was important that people know that literally anyone could do this. It seemed silly to stand on a stage and pretend we were special. Or different, or important. Wow! Did you do that a lot? Yeah, especially the first few years. Just the act of not thinking we were anything special was somehow aggressive. The audience found it aggressive? Yes. I understand now. You had people who practiced alone in their bedrooms their whole lives, and maybe the way we were playing was tacitly implying that that was unimportant and music could be arbitrary, as long as it wasn’t cowardly or phoney. I mean, consciously they just genuinely thought we sucked for sure, but imaginary rock’n’roll was intimidating. In what situation are you most desperate for humour? I think I am most grateful for humour when it’s unexpected. I love when it just happens on public transportation; you see something absurd and you lock eyes with someone and you share that second

29

Magik Markers. Continued where you are both laughing, or rolling your eyes. And when is humour the most inappropriate? I am often the person committing the inappropriate goofiness. In romantic situations, especially when I was younger and not necessarily passionate about the person I was with, just cracking up at something someone says in an ‘intimate’ moment. Or laughing when you are kissing, because you are bored and start thinking about how ridiculous it is. I take my work very seriously, but I really hate pretense or self-importance, so I like to joke. Some people misinterpret this as an actual lack of seriousness. Do you use jokes or turning a situation into a joke as a defense mechanism? Fuck, yeah! This interview is turning into therapy. GChat into the calm. But don’t you need a deadly serious side as well if you want to get somewhere in music – and life? I think there’s a difference between taking ideas seriously, taking your work seriously and taking yourself seriously. I take my work very seriously. You cannot create a thoughtful body of work without a serious commitment. You are taking your own, and by proxy, the idea of the human imagination and the unconscious mind, seriously. You are quieting the voice that works hard to tell you your ideas are stupid and that you should be quiet. You are putting something vulnerable into the world without any defences. You can’t really do this without humility and discipline. Magik Markers play on 17 November at WORM in Rotterdam. The show is free for Subbacultcha! members. Other live dates: 19 November - Extrapool, Nijmegen

The Funny Issue. Interview

John Wizards

Phone interview by Brenda Bosma Photos shot by Nico Krijno in Cape Town, South Africa

33

John Wizards. Continued John Wizards, the band built around Cape Town whizz wonder John Withers, just might have made the most magical album of 2013. The self-titled debut combines a range of global sounds, with the African flavour on top. It definitely gets us in a good mood. We spoke with John about humour in music and how to tell a joke properly – and in the end he cracked one with us On the album there’s the song ‘Leuk’, which means ‘nice’ or ‘funny’ in Dutch. What is so ‘leuk’? Actually there’s a funny story to that song. I have a friend whose parents have a holiday house near the coast. Once a year they open up the house to people who need a place to stay or who want a holiday place. These people looking for a place leave a note on this message board. On one of the notes a kid had misspelled his name. He signed it as ‘Leuk’ instead of ‘Luke’. Me and some friends ended up reproducing all of the quotes that were up there and signed them as ‘Leuk’. That’s a sweet prank. We thought so too. Sweet pranks are nice. There’s also the song ‘I’m Still a Serious Guy’. Are you? I used to be. For instance, when I was younger I never really liked reggae music. I thought it was a little silly. I think I just became more of an open person as I got older. Now I really enjoy it.

34

Are you the one to crack jokes in the band? No, no – that would probably be our bass player, Alex. Do you know one yourself or can you reproduce one of his? Maybe... give me a moment... It’s not something I usually do. I would love to have a whole repertoire of jokes in my pocket. You know how some people laugh before they get to the point when telling a joke? Well, yeah, that’s usually what happens to me. I end up laughing way too soon and it ruins the joke. Maybe that’s why I don’t have a collection at hand: I know it almost never gets through. That sounds like a Catch 22. Do you also ask people if they get the joke after telling one? Well, I never get to that point. As for me getting other people’s jokes: I think I do, but I never can seem to remember them unfortunately. Analysing humour has been compared to dissecting a frog. Nobody enjoys that. Also, the frog dies. That’s probably true. It’s such a funny thing to think about why it is you’re laughing exactly. It has something to do with timing and the energy you radiate. Sometimes someone will tell a joke and people will acknowledge it. Then someone else in the group elaborates on it with the right amount of energy and enthusiasm and everyone will laugh much more. I’d probably put myself to the former group. Luckily I laugh enough. [Laughs] Your music is very joyful. Thanks. It’s also maybe a side that’s a bit neglected in music. Do you think humour belongs in music? Definitely, it’s something that you should be able to find in music. It’s nice to shed a light on both ends of the spectrum, the serious and the light side. Do you think you can come up with a joke now? For a moment there I thought that I’d got away with it... I can only think of one really terrible one, though. It’s a joke I ended up hearing

35

John Wizards. Continued when I was a child. I think this is how the joke goes. You might have a similar thing in Holland – I’m sure loads of countries have these kinds of joke. Here it goes. There’s an Englishman, a Chinese man and a Mr Van der Merwe, a typical South African surname. So, you have these three characters. They meet this leprechaun and he tells them if they’ll slide down the rainbow and shout what it is they want at the bottom of the rainbow it will be there. The Englishman slides down

and shouts: ‘Gold!’, and falls into a pot of gold. Then the Chinaman slides down and says: ‘Girl!’. A beautiful woman awaits him at the bottom. Then Mr Van der Merwe goes down the rainbow and while he’s going down he just goes, ‘WEEEE!’. That’s really funny. John Wizards play on 16 November at Well, I’m glad you laughed. Featured Artists: Iris & Katinka Interview by Floor Kortman

Who are you? Iris Donker and Katinka van Gorkum, visual artists. How did you two fall in love? Iris: I thought you were mysteriously dry. Katinka: You were the only one who spoke to me. During a course at the academy it was love at familiar sight. We ended up together in front and behind the camera and we got to know each other through the record button. Initially it wasn’t productive, we got stuck. We had a lot of imagery, but there was no real content to be found. In January 2012 we made Zelfredzaamheid, a compilation video of everything that ‘failed’ during our projects together. Since then it’s been on: we’ve been an inexplicable duo. Can you explain how you work together and how you find balance between bumming around acting silly and actually asking questions? The combination of our mutual awkwardness in our improvisations, and at the same time trying to make serious works, is like combining water and fire. The questions we ask in our work therefore emerge from the friction between

our imaginations and reality. We’re in a bubble, we’re aware we’re in a bubble, and this bubble is held together by sticky tape. The process of your works is very visible, especially in the performances. I guess in a lot of cases, the process is also sort of the end product. Is this a correct assumption? What’s the relationship between the process and the end product for you? We’re sorry, we’re not very good at answering multiple questions at once. Can you number the questions and give them different colours? That would help. When was the last time you made each other laugh? 23 September around 4pm. Is there anything to look forward to in the future? Iris: No… Katinka: Yes, our TV SHOW! Starting January 2014 we’ll create a monthly TV show called LIVE – Straight From Reality, which will be available all over the internet. Both the video Zelfredzaamheid and the performance registration In de Gloria by Iris & Katinka will be on display at Le Mini Who? exhibition, 30 November, Kapitaal, Utrecht.

Books: Rock ’N’ Roll Library No 7 By Marc van der Holst. Image by Lonneke van der Palen

Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link

Every month we add a rockin’ good book to our Rock ’N’ Roll Library I’ve never been a big fan of fantasy stuff. There’s something about the likes of elves, orcs and leprechauns that just doesn’t appeal to me. So when people I know and trust kept recommending fantasy writer Kelly Link’s stories I was sceptical at first. Could I believe in magic? The answer is yes. I believe. Link’s second short story collection, the appropriately titled Magic for Beginners (2005), has worked its literary magic on me. These stories will play some new tricks on your mind. They are populated by zombies, ghosts and devils, but don’t let that scare you off. This is fantasy done fantastically. I can’t and won’t reveal any of its tricks here, but the haunted house story ‘Stone Animals’ was my personal favourite and worth the admission price to this magic

show alone. A freakily familiar-yetunfamiliar Lynchian – no, Linkian – folk tale featuring rabbits. Many, many rabbits. Link pulls a lot more out of her hat in this book, though. There’s the metafictional magic of the title story, the fairy-tale feel of ‘The Faery Handbag’, the devilishly layered ‘Lull’... This book will haunt and enchant you. Several of these stories, as well as Link’s complete first collection (Stranger Things Happen, 2001) have appeared magically (and legally) online. May they trick you into buying her books at your local bookstore. Poof!

have the ‘wow factor’. At first I thought I’d cut off a turtleneck, but there it was: a green shimmery shirt and again I was like, ‘Oh shit!’ Any shoes? Well, I did try to look for them with a couple of different ones in mind – creepers or sneakers, for example. But it just didn’t work out with my outfit. I like your fashion principles. If you could sing a duet with Autre Ne Veut, what would be the name of the song? Somehow I’m fascinated by pretty boys who look like true ladies, so let’s say ‘Ladyboy’.

What do you think of his tunes? Autre Ne Veut surprised me – in a good way; his vocals are slightly over the top. Fashion-wise, it gave me a clear picture of a luxurious, theatrical ’90s outfit. How did this vision help you compose an outfit? I found a store in Utrecht where this guy just made up a price of €2.50 for my fabulous black pants with the occasional glitter. I was like, ‘Shit! Jackpot’. Sounds like a bargain. Yeah, although they’re a bit daring for my style. I also found a bunch of tops, but they just didn’t

Food: Cooking With... By Zofia Ciechowska. Image by Carlijn Potma

Jackson Scott Every month we ask an artist to share a recipe of their favourite dish Jackson Scott spent most of last year living in a ramshackle house called Melbourne in Asheville, NC. With no TV or internet, he spent all his time listening to and making music, wearing gym shorts, drinking local hoppy beer and cooking pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. This recipe originates from a time when Jackson got really into cooking and went through a phase of making cookies. Pancakes are like cookies, but even better. Add chocolate chips to these babies for an extra treat. ‘This recipe is for one of my favourite dishes that I’ve loved since I was a kid. It’s a classic. Breakfast food is the best. My mom would make pancakes with maple syrup and bacon for me when I was little. I’d eat them at the table. Funny thing is, I’ve never owned pyjamas, I’d just sleep in my clothes, so I’d

eat them at the breakfast table in my rumpled clothes.’ How to make Jackson Scott’s Pancakes with Bacon and Maple Syrup • Whisk up the egg and the milk. • Mix the baking powder, salt and flour in a separate bowl. Add the egg/milk mixture. • Fry the bacon on a medium heat, flip constantly. Melt some butter in another pan. • Pour the mix into the pan, add chocolate chips if you want. • Put the bacon on top of the pancakes and serve with some good Canadian maple syrup. • Eat whilst listening to Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 or Boléro by Ravel. Jackson Scott plays on 10 November at Tivoli in Utrecht. The show is free for Subbacultcha! members.

Music Reviews By Carly Blair

Cass McCombs Big Wheel and Others

Kevin Morby Harlem River Woodsist

Domino

Although he originally hails from Kansas City and now lives in LA, Babies singer/guitarist and Woods bassist Kevin Morby called New York City home for five years. His solo debut, Harlem River, is an homage to his adoptive home town, named after the river that separates Manhattan from the Bronx. Much like the humble waterway that is its namesake, Harlem River meanders along at a variable but mostly relaxed pace, occupying a territory somewhere between the Babies’ exuberant garage pop and Woods’ stonery jams. Though the album focuses on tales of desperation and failure, Morby’s world-weary vocals are wonderfully counterbalanced by hopeful and lovely guitar melodies that seem to hint at why, in spite of terrible odds, so many would move to NYC in pursuit of their dreams.

This Northern California songwriter has developed a reputation for being forthcoming and emotive in his lyrics and defensively private in person. This odd mix of rebelliousness and confessionalism has helped the enigmatic vagabond build a cult following over his decade-long career. Following his two acclaimed 2011 albums, Wit’s End and Humor Risk, McCombs returns with Big Wheel and Others. His most stylistically diverse and ambitious release yet, it plays like a soundtrack to a road trip across the American landscape, with McCombs collecting tales of religious doubt, sociopolitical tension, and romance as he travels between rock ’n’ roll, blues, jazz, and folk. The journey is a bit overly long, but nevertheless landmarked with some of his finest work yet.

Music Reviews Continued

Cate Le Bon Mug Museum

Moonface Julia with Blue Jeans On

Wichita

Jagjaguwar Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug began recording his fourth Moonface album at the same time as his underrated collaboration with Siinai, 2012’s Heartbreaking Bravery. His self-proclaimed ‘love record’, Julia, features just piano and Krug’s voice. The stripped down surroundings throw his songwriting into sharp relief; thankfully it is more than eloquent and moving enough to withstand the added scrutiny.

Like tourmate and collaborator Kevin Morby, Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon recently relocated to LA, where she recorded her third fulllength, Mug Museum. As with 2012’s solid CYRK, the oddball structures and unequivocally lovely vocals on her new album evoke the palatable prog pop of former tourmate St. Vincent, albeit with a warmer and hazier vibe befitting her new home base.

Tim Hecker Virgins

Wooden Shjips Back to Land

Kranky

This Montreal-based experimental electronic musician’s blown-out digital shoegaze is among the most instantly recognisable and distinctive ambient/drone music being made today. Utilising a broader sonic palette and a more impressionistic than abstract approach compared to 2011’s Juno-awarded Ravedeath, 1972, his new album Virgins is tighter and less sinister-sounding than its predecessor.

Thrill Jockey

After 2011’s West, half of this SF psych quartet moved to Oregon. Due to the lush landscapes, or maybe just doing less drugs, Back to Land finds the band adding terrestrial touches like acoustic guitar to their usual spaced-out sound and taking a more grounded approach to songwriting, resulting in their brightest and most universally appealing album yet.

Music Reviews Heavenly Beat Prominence

Diane Coffee My Friend Fish

John Peña played bass in Beach Fossils before leaving the band to focus full-time on his rather different solo project, Heavenly Beat. His debut album, Talent, flew under many a radar when Captured Tracks released it back in 2012, but the feather-light and impressively consistent dream pop it contained left those who did detect it hungry for more. Inspired by a breakup and the vibe of Primitive Radio Gods’ ‘Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand’, Peña’s elegant new album flaunts his increasingly refined gift for crafting danceable and distinctive melodies, skilful arrangements and honest but understated approach to confessional lyricism. Much as its predecessor lived up to the promise of its title, Prominence is outstanding and should succeed in generating the attention Peña deserves.

Being a child star seems to be a recipe for either failure of catastrophic proportions or fascinating character building. The tale of Shaun Fleming, aka Diane Coffee, follows the latter script. After spending his early years acting and doing voice work for various Disney films and TV shows, he joined Foxygen as their drummer for a spell before picking up and leaving his Southern California hometown for New York. Welcomed to the city by a drained immune system and wallet, he holed up for two weeks to write and record My Friend Fish with whatever ramshackle equipment he had on hand. Despite the quick turnaround and his extremely limited means, it is a remarkably accomplished debut, filled with rousing and soulful ’60s-inspired gospel pop ’n’ roll that leaves you eager for a sequel.

New Films By Basje Boer

La grande bellezza Paolo Sorrentino

La grande bellezza is definitely a rare pleasure. The film’s protagonist is socialite Jep, a one-hit-wonder of a writer who has just turned 65. When this senior party animal learns that an old flame has passed away, it dawns on him that the party might soon be over. In his existential search for ‘la grande bellezza’ – the great beauty – he befriends a forty-something stripper, turns to both Botox and the Catholic Church and wanders the streets of majestic Rome till the first light of day. Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, Italy’s best director working today, La grande bellezza is a piece of pure cinema magic. It’s as melancholic as it is funny, with such a lust for life at its core that it’s hard not to leave the movie theatre with a smile on your face. Release date 07 November. When you’ve finished this one, start watching... • Of course, La grande bellezza was heavily influenced by Italian great Federico Fellini

and his La dolce vita. But the movie also bears a resemblance to a very different kind of Italian cinema: the seedy subgenre of the giallo. These operatic horror whodunnits are as over the top as Sorrentino’s work – though admittedly they feature a lot more fake blood. • Before ‘the great beauty’, there was the similarly great Gatsby. There is definitely a connection between La grande bellezza’s delicious party scenes and the kitschy blockbusters of Baz Luhrmann. For Luhrmann it’s the cancan and the Charleston; for Sorrentino it’s Italodisco and Eurotrash.

ways-awesome Seventies, the film revolves around two brothers, one a bad-to-the-bone criminal, the other a goody two-shoes policeman. Uhoh. Though very male-orientated, the film also features some damn fine female performances, most notably by Marion Cotillard, who portrays a tough Latina prostitute with a drug habit. Release date 31 October.

José Luis Valle - 2013 Having worked at a light-bulb factory for 30 years, Rafael is ready for retirement. According to his boss, no immigrant can expect a pension. On the other side of the Mexican-American border, Lidia works as a housemaid in the kitschy residence of an elderly lady. When said lady dies leaving her estate to her dog, Princess, the pet becomes Lidia’s new boss. This bittersweet view on today’s working class is both funny and touching. Release date 24 October.

This experimental arts festival’s multimedia programme presents critical and creative views on contemporary media culture. Besides its Panorama programme, which features the finest new film and video, the festival also has a thematic programme. This year’s theme, Capitalism Catch-22, will examine the dilemma of capitalism in a world where it’s increasingly obvious that rampant consumerism has become unsustainable. Their music night will feature a DJ battle designed to get your hips as well as that hamster wheel in your head moving, before Laser Poodle and DJ Fellow help you forget society’s impending doom with an eclectic selection sure to help you party like it’s 1999.

Santiago, Chile’s Föllakzoid surrendered their souls to rock’n’roll about five years ago, and they’ve been jamming together ever since. Their guitarist, Domingo García-Huidobro, claims that being in Chile brings you closer to the stars, and explains that the band finds in the cosmos ‘a source of inspiration where everyone, no matter where he’s from, can be separated from his body’. Whether they’re actually closer to the stars or just closer to a good source of ayahuasca than most, their trance-inducing take on kraut-rock just might blow your mind too. Wash down the first couple of beers of the night with a gulp of melodic punk and smart-alecky stage banter from Leeds’ Eagulls.

10 November - Tivoli, Utrecht 19.30 | €8 | Free for members Jackson Scott moved to Asheville, North Carolina to go the college, then promptly dropped out and recently lost a job at a college bookstore because he ditched a shift to see a Ty Segall show. Clearly a subscriber to the Tao of Slack, he’d better hope the whole ‘promising young bedroom musician’ thing he’s got going pans out. His Syd Barrett-inspired lo-fi pop is already garnering him comparisons to Southern indie icons like Bradford Cox and the Elephant Six Collective, so I’d say he’s off to a pretty good start.

In this installment of the ‘Listen To This’ series, Bang on a Can All-Stars will follow up performances of works by the likes of Battles’ Tyondai Braxton, The Books’ Nick Zammuto, Julia Wolfe and more with a victory lap featuring legendary Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo. In addition to the main event, we’ve curated a side programme featuring dark noisy electronics by new RVNG signee Gardland as well as performances by Bismuth and Michiel Klein.

Gary War + Purple Pilgrims

13 November - Melkweg, Amsterdam 20.00 | €16 | Free for members

13 November - dB’s, Utrecht 21.00 | €8 | Free for members Legend has it that the first thing avantpop genius John Maus ever tweeted was “GARY WAR IS THE FUTURE”. While this might be a slight exaggeration, we have reason to believe that War may actually be from the future; on his first full-length release, Jared’s Lot, he effortlessly extirpates our perceptions of the boundaries of psychedelic music and thrusts the whole genre forward drawing from the most unexpected of outside sources. Opening the show will be Hong Kong-based dream pop outsiders Purple Pilgrims and the ghosts living inside their amps.

From the feverish startle that was their debut Street Horrrsing to the universal acclaim of Tarot Sport, Fuck Buttons have established a musical identity that has roots in post-rock and at the same time manages to fit in thick walls of psychedelic drone and hypnotic tribal rhythms. Famous for their apocalyptic/borderline punkish live shows (they were among the highlights of both Best Kept Secret and Le Guess Who?), they’re coming back to make us pour gallons of sweat once again. Their behemoth of a third album Slow Focus came out this summer, so they’ll even bring a fresh round of ammunition.

After previously playing with various bands, John Wizards’ mastermind John Withers’ new project got its start when he met Rwandan singer Emmanuel Nzaramba by chance in the streets of Cape Town and the two bonded over music. Aside from being a musical omnivore with an appetite for everything from African highlife and mbaqanga to disco, Withers is also a whiz at writing jingles for commercials, and these loves for pan-global genres as well as compact and cheerful melodies are reflected on the band’s eclectic and kaleidoscopic new self-titled debut.

In addition to being a virtuoso violinist in a traditional sense, Finnish fiddler Pekka Kuusisto has earned acclaim for his versatility and rare enthusiasm for improvisation, informed by his experiences outside the realm of classical music – namely, playing jazz with a trio called Töykeät and other progressive musicians like Finland’s RinneRadio; dabbling in electronic music ranging from hip hop to noise; heading his own Finnish folk ensemble, the Luomu Players; and appearing on various Finnish rock and pop releases.

New Hampshire noise-rock duo Magik Markers built up one hell of a reputation with their alternately sexy and snarling vocals, manic energy, commanding stage presence and the kind of dedication that once left singer and guitarist Elisa Ambrogio smeared head to hip with her own blood after she smashed her nose with her guitar and kept playing anyway. After a four-year hiatus, they’re back on the road with a bassist touring in support of the longawaited follow-up to 2009’s Balf Quarry, entitled Surrender To The Fantasy.

After releasing EPs on highly regarded labels such as Opal Tapes and Future Times, the up-and-coming Kansas City producer seems set to take the electronic world by storm. Charismatic 65-year-old magazine writer Jep wrote one promising novel in his twenties and has been living the party life ever since. He roams the streets of Rome exploring the outskirts of the cities fashionable nightlife, surrounding himself with beautiful women and highclass splendour, parading in shallow amusement. An unexpected event makes him continue his search for ‘La Grande Bellezza’ (the great beauty) but with a refreshed side now looming over it. An at times funny and melancholic cinematic gem exuding lush Roman decadence by Italian’s finest contemporary director Paolo Sorrentino, also known for ‘Le conseguenze dell’amore’ and ‘Il Divo’.

A documentary about American actor, singer, and drag queen Divine. Born Harris Glenn Milstead (1945-1988), Divine was life-long friend and collaborator of filmmaker John Waters. Waters featured the big haired, arch-eyebrowed 300-pound star in almost every single one of his early movies, catapulting the ‘Goddess of Gross’ into cult heroism even while he was alive. Built on the insights of his closest companions, Waters, Divine’s mother and some of the actors and crew Divine worked with, I Am Divine charts the infamous diva’s rise from a bullied, overweight schoolboy to icon.
