Subbacultcha! contributor Will Martin has joined forces with Berlin-based photographer Camille Blake and Moroccan promoter Daox to launch a series of cross-cultural musical artist residencies. The first edition brought James Holden, Floating Points, Biosphere and Vessel to Marrakech for a week-long collaborative session at the Dar Al Ma’Mûn Arts Centre with legendary Moroccan Gnawa Maâlems Mahmoud Guinia and Mohammed Kouyou. Music: Slobster
Slobster is a super-productive 21-year-old music producer from Ghent, who reconstructs emotions and energy in the form of sound. He makes two remixes a night, mixing mainstream artists like P!NK and Destiny’s Child. The result is crystalline and trippy with a recognisable sea-punk vibe, kind of like a wet dream. His first EP, Jinchuuriki, was released earlier this year and represents experimental, ambient electro beats. Download it for free from his Soundcloud page.
After a number of highly acclaimed EPs, multimedia projects and writings, multidisciplinary artist Fatima Al Qadiri is releasing her first LP, on Hyperdub. The conceptually layered Asiatisch provides a simulated road trip through an imagined China. Combining influences of classic R&B and synthetic versions of traditional Chinese music, it revolves around the fantasies of East Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture. You’ll definitely like ‘Shanzhai’, the haunting cover of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ with nonsensical Mandarin lyrics.

Who lives a perfect life? What kind of music makes you cry? The human voice is an extremely touching instrument, and classical music brings this to an extreme. I still cherish the life performance of Zbigniew Preisner’s Concerto en mi mineur (by the fictional composer Van den Budenmayer). What makes you dance? Is it wrong to say alcohol? No, it’s more about the people and the atmosphere. I guess it’s rather the vibe of the moment. Which future Subbacultcha! show are you looking forward to? A nice thing about Subbacultcha! is that you can be surprised about the events. Just go and learn something new. That said, I’m looking forward to ‘Nog Niet Naar House’ on 09 May in Ghent, for the pounding techno music.

Interview London-based Portuguese techno producer IVVVO might look like a tough guy – and he isn’t what you’d call a chatterbox – but don’t be mistaken: whether it’s due to his Southern roots or not, to this top DJ music is all about feelings. Calling cutting-edge electronic labels such as Opal Tapes, Public Information, Fourth Wave and Terrain Ahead his home, he spoke with us about cooking with hot girls and the grey world inside his head Where you at? London, home. Is it a chill Wednesday night for you? I’ve been cooking with a hot girl, so I think so. Are we interrupting your night? No, I’m done. Cooking with hot girls: is that a bonus of being a producer? Or is that because hot girls have a thing for exotic men? I don’t know how to answer this question. I was thinking of talented producers and girls who want a piece of them. Do you experience problems with this? I’m not talented. What would you call yourself then? A human.

‘I don’t think about music as a sound’ A human with a nose for good techno music. When did your love for techno start? Around 2007, I think. It started very naturally. Was it because you went to a lot of techno parties around that time? Are you assuming I make techno music? Yes. I dunno, I’ve never seen music as a genre. I think I started listening to dance music under the age of 18, when I started hanging out, and ’cause most of my close friends in Portugal were DJs. We’re probably one of the first generations that has such an eclectic taste in music. But when I listen to your mixtapes I feel that techno energy. And when I listen to your own songs I hear an artist who likes to experiment. Yeah, music for me is deeper than a genre. I don’t think about music as a sound. For me, my music is equal to my feelings. Of course my music will guide you to a genre. Speaking of emotions... what feelings do you associate with white (cf. All Shades of White released on Opal Tapes)? Pain. All my music is about pain. Is making music a way for you to torture yourself? It’s a way of getting rid of my emotions. It’s like poetry, making paintings. I use music to say what I otherwise can’t express. It’s the only way of being pure with myself. Can I ask you what you did to exorcise your feelings and emotions before you started making music? I didn’t.

IVVVO. Continued Do you dance to your own music? Not at all. Name one song that makes you dance. Colin Stetson’s ‘Judges’. Cool. He made an album with one of our favourite artists, Amen Dunes. Through Donkey Jaw? Nope, his new one, Love. Oh, dope. Do you know Colin Stetson? I saw him on Youtube... I love his work, but don’t want to meet him. I saw you’ve been posting some Tricky stuff on Facebook. Would you like to meet him? Man, I love Tricky, I love his work, I would love to work with him. I’m afraid if someday I meet him I might lose my fantasy about him. Mixed feelings. Would it be easier to meet up with you non-musical ‘idols’? Well, my father is my only idol. But there are some other guys too. Like Tricky, Colin Stetson, John Martin or Pina Baush. Their work is special to me. You live in London, your father in Portugal. Isn’t that hard? We Skype every day. We’re really close. It’s not the same as live contact, I know, but he’s always with me. His thoughts, everything he gave me for as long as I can remember, are really close to my heart. Does he understand the emotions IVVVO puts into his music? I dunno if he understands me, but he really supports me. I am who I am but he always believes in me. I’m a sad guy, the world is pretty grey in my head. Tonstartssbandht. Continued If you’re boogieing groovy on the East coast, what better way to step up your game than by taking it all the way to Eastern Europe? Originally hailing from Florida, that’s exactly what brothers Edwin and Andy White, aka Tonstartssbandht (tone-starts-band-hut) thought. Signed on Arbutus Records, home to Sean Nicholas Savage, the Brothers White spoke with us about the omnipresence of Western culture, energetic Russian vibes and their lifelong friends in Belarus Is Eastern Europe the next level shit? It’s definitely a strange place for Western underground music. I guess it’s the next level shit, it’s the next one over geographically... Russian culture is really not at all present in the mass consciousness of the West. Whereas there’d be more of the West present in Russia, in the sense that there’d be kids picking up on what’s happening. Because Western culture and art are this pervasive global thing – in an imperialist way but also in the way that it’s too late to look back because it just already is what it is. What’s the story behind your general success in that part of the world? It was just straight-up random internet shit. We first learned about it when we would Google our band and find our names on Russian

Tonstartssbandht. Continued kids’ live journals. It’s funny because it happened before we even thought we had fans in France or in the UK. Eventually, these kids got in touch with us offering to bring us to Russia. It started really small – we had a tiny Russian tour – then the next year, we did more Russian cities and some extra shows in Ukraine, where we met our friends from Belarus who took us home for some shows. Then it all took off from there. Now we have life-long friends there, so we’ll always look after them. How different is the audience in Eastern Europe compared to Western audiences? People are definitely inspired and very energetically involved. Everyone you meet there is some sort of artist. I mean, it’s similar here, but over there it’s even more pronounced. They all know each other from all these creative outlets. While we’re playing, everyone is super engaged in the show and dancing, which you can find all over, but it’s consistent in Russia and Ukraine. Not to make it sound like it’s a competitive thing, but they do let loose a lot more, but in a really good way, not in a fucked-up way. Those are the best shows. It’s the closest to the band-audience experience that we shared at those early shows that we had in Montreal when it was just all of our friends. They really open up, so we open up too. What’s next, boys? We should probably mention we have a new record, a live double LP, that we’ll be promoting while we’re in Europe. Last year, I [Andy] recorded every one of our shows in Europe, and at the end of the tour we had 13 hours of shows. I recorded them all multitrack on my computer and we brought it down to 80 minutes. The record is called Overseas and it’s gonna be Tonstartssbandht play on 14 May at DNA released on a record label out of (Buzz On Your Lips) in Brussels. Scene Report Stockholm

Most people who move to Stockholm hate it. Some people love it of course, but all sane people hate it – and with good reason. It’s expensive. It’s superficial. It’s fake. It’s huge, but not in a good way. Travelling from one side of the city to the other can take you several hours, even on the subway. But people put up with Stockholm for various reasons – the main one being: it’s crap, but it’s home. If you’re genuinely interested in music and art, you’ll have to struggle, but you’re going to end up liking it I’m Martin Herterich of Sand Circles and Broken Lights. I’m a part of the DIY collective Masskultur, a group that dwells in the depths of the Stockholm underground, occasionally organising concerts here and there. Writing a scene report about Stockholm is not easy. So much of the scene is about people moving in and out, discovering new grounds and breaking traditions, that writing about a unified scene isn’t going to make any sense. The thing with the Stockholm scene is that it’s very fragmented and changes very quickly. Obviously, Sweden is a small country and people are often connected with one another in the most unexpected of ways. But even though it’s musically diverse, there is a curiosity between scenes and genres, creating an interesting mix. With so many musicians doing so many different things, it’s impossible to talk about a ‘scene’ in the sense of a small group of friends hanging out all the time. Still, there is a blooming DIY community beneath the surface. While Sand Circles has always been a bit of an outsider project,

Scene Report: Stockholm. Continued Stockholm can pride itself on artists like Quiltland, Tar... Feathers, 1991, Ond Ton, Erik Enocksson and the Ectoplasm Girls, good friends of mine who often work in similar directions, even though the actual end result sometimes sounds very different. Several Swedish synthnoise misfits – like Time Deleters, Optic Nest and Coca-Cola 3 – are Stockholm-based. Some of these projects also have strong ties to the thriving techno scene, where there are some interesting experimental techno acts, like Varg and Abdulla Rashim. On the noisier side of things, there are industrial acts such as Händer som Vårdar, Treriksröset, Vit Fana, Ochu and my own Broken Lights. And of course there’s a huge scene for weirdo punk and bedroom-pop experimentalism around the labels Oma333 and Hockey Rawk, with bands like Munnen, Saigon, UFOFBI and Mole Says Hi. Stockholm is an expensive city. Gentrification and insane rents have driven most artists out of the city centre into the suburban areas, home to Sweden’s famous social housing projects. This has led to a constant shortage of meeting places outside of the mainstream clubs and bars. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it has sparked an ongoing process of de-centralisation of the alternative culture in the city. A lot of venues can be found in the suburbs, where old office buildings and warehouses quickly turn into art studios and overnight party spaces. Going to a show in Stockholm for the first time can be a weird experience. Even though a lot of the venues don’t have a permit and are more or less illegal, the promoter usually requires you to put your name on a list several days before the show, a strict age limit is applied and everything is generally very controlled. But don’t worry; these are actually just guerrilla tactics to appease the Swedish police. Due to the Swedish authorities’ witch hunt on underground parties in the ’90s, there is a culture of secrecy around shows. Most of these venues are short-lived. I could write about a venue that

exists this year, but next year it could be gone. Many promoters in Stockholm, including Gavin Maycroft of Mother/Oma333 and my own collective Masskultur, turn this to their advantage and move around between venues. A few of these places are worth mentioning in the hope that they stay open long enough for you to visit them. One is Tropiska Föreningen, a combined art gallery/studio space for musicians and visual artists, situated in the Stockholm suburb of Hägersten. That is where I have my rehearsal and studio space, sharing the room with Henrik

The Next Level Issue Söderström of Händer Som Vårdar and the sludge-techno artist Varg. After a series of crazy after-parties and intense shows with Unicorn Hard-On, Heinz Hopf and Blodvite nearly tearing the roof off, the space is now more low-key, but still active. Another place worth mentioning is the Solna Bunker, a former bomb shelter in the northern Stockholm suburb Solna. From marathon raves and punk gigs to insane noise shows with our Danish friends from the Posh Isolation label, the bunker has hosted some of my most memorable nights. If your thing is drinking expensive beer on crowded dancefloors and clubbing on a large scale, you might want to try Under Bron. One of Stockholm’s largest clubs, it’s run by people from the techno scene, who sometimes throw in the odd live gig in one of the smaller rooms. And then there’s Fylkingen, an important and long-established meeting point for noise musicians and weirdos in the Swedish scene. The Fylkingen society for experimental music and arts was founded in 1933, and continues to showcase extreme music on a regular basis at its venue at Mariatorget, in the midst of the hipster-infested downtown neighbourhood Södermalm. Even though they’ve been criticised by some purists for being slightly conservative, FylkinEssential Stockholm music: Sand gen has probably the best sound Circles, Quiltland, Vit Fana, Ond system for experimental music in Ton, Händer som Vårdar, Hanna northern Europe. Hirsch, Ectoplasm Girls. Most importantly: if you plan to visit Stockholm, get in touch Essential Stockholm spots: The Solwith a Stockholm native. Geert Van Hertum Photographer Geert Van Hertum (1988) shows you places that you otherwise wouldn’t notice if you were to walk by them on your way to school or work; the kind of places that tend to fade away at the corners of your eyes. They only exist because of their functionality and because they are in a way forgotten by their accidental ‘architect’. Van Hertum tries to recognise these places, capture them and make them visible for the viewer. By exploring and approaching them like they are being discovered for the first time, Van Hertum manages to create a sort of awareness. Opa-TishaWocka-Locka by Anne Daems & Kenneth Andrew Mroczek On a recent field trip to MER. Paper Kunsthalle – an independent publishing house in Ghent – we were shown an impressive number of stunningly designed monographs, photography books, zines and literal art projects in print. One tome stood out in particular: the exploration of the South Florida city of Opa-Tisha-Wocka-Locka. Multidisciplinary artists Anne Daems and Kenneth Andrew Mroczek teamed up to bring us the story of a place that is as unusual in its conception as it is in its formulation. Translated from the native Seminole language as ‘high ground amongst the swamp on which there is a camping place’, Opa-Locka was developed in 1926 by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss. He enlisted Bernhardt E Muller as city planner and proposed an aesthetic based on the One Thousand and One
Nights, following a fixation with the Douglas Fairbanks film The Thief of Baghdad. It’s hard to imagine that a small town in some random Florida county could boast the greatest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the West and not see it as a cheap effort to cash in on the cultural tourism of America’s golden years. Yet with their book, Daems and Mroczek look beyond the domes and pointed arches and deliver an all-encompassing view of Opa-Locka through stark photographs, archival material, city plans and interviews with locals that relay the trials and triumphs of a place filled with the dreams of otherness that were the basis of its creation. Japanese Red Cinema: around Masao Adachi May 2014
During the month of May, Cinema Nova is paying homage to the work of Masao Adachi, a key figure in Japanese cinema of the 1960s and ’70s. Adachi, a widely published activist and theorist, developed the concept of ‘fûkeiron’ or ‘landscape theory’ as a cinematic form. The central concept is based on the idea that the landscape around us, from its most picturesque to its most banal aspects, is an expression of the dominant political power. The quintessential film for an understanding of his work, and likely his most screened to date, is A.K.A Serial Killer (1969), a layered film essay with the filmmaker as narrator and a vital free-jazz soundtrack. Adachi’s work is (re-)gaining a lot of attention these days from a new generation of authors and filmmakers. The programme also contains films by Kôji Wakamatsu, Nagisa Oshima and Eric Baudelaire, all to be screened this month. The Japanese Red Cinema programme will be screened at Cinema Nova, Brussels, throughout May.

Films L for Leisure Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn - 2013
L for Leisure, Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn’s first feature film, is an arthouse comedy set in the early Nineties that follows graduate students on their vacations around the world. Twenty-four naive intellectual youngsters, portrayed by amateur actors, basically just hang around and talk. This episodic impression of said decade is viewed through the nostalgic goggles of television of that time. While John Atkinson’s soundtrack helpfully confirms this vibe, it’s clear that his music was made anno 2013. This underlines both the viewers’ retrospection and the characters’ introspection. If you grew up with shows like The X-files, Twin Peaks, Baywatch or Melrose Place you can’t ignore the lure of the soothingly familiar hues of the world reconstructed here. Indulging in this shameless nostalgia you feel like you’re sneakily watching your older siblings grow up. The screening at KASKcinema, Ghent, on 22 May is free for Subbacultcha! members.

Piercing through sound collages, pounding drums and voicemail messages, there’s Blunt’s sensual deep voice, guiding you into a dreamy and intriguing world.

Music: Mutual Benefit + Yuko 25 May - 4AD, Diksmuide Mutual Benefit’s Jordan Lee transforms reality into a golden-coloured dream with his luscious and harmonious guitar chords. Debut album Love’s Crushing Diamond is the sound of everything making sense, if only for a moment. Yuko states they’re inspired by coffee and sun-bleached tablecloths, just the way we like it. Apart from the subtle post rock, their latest LP, Long Sleeves Cause Accidents, even features a soprano.
Conference: Boris Groys 27 May - BOZAR, Brussels Boris Groys’ unexpected propositions are a must-read for anyone interested in the balance of aesthetic and political power in the contemporary art arena. He’s well known for producing more provocation per page than any other critic.
