The Religious Issue
‘Dude, do you believe in God? Do you actually believe in something, at all?’ Who hasn’t asked this before, Big Lebowksi style? You’re sitting there, in the dark corner of a shabby café. Leaning forward towards your mates, pondering life’s big questions, hoping your buddies can tackle them, their faces lit by flickering candles. Obviously, the easy option is to say that you don’t. But come on, couldn’t there be something more? You probably won’t be picking apples in an orchard engulfed by the brightest light ever, but still. In our Halloween state of mind, we just couldn’t resist wondering...

Music: Babe Rainbow
Music: Éthiopiques
Just like a rainbow gets its beauty from its different colours, Cameron Reed likes to play around with different sounds. Whereas his first Warp EPs Shaved and Endless Path were more vaguely post-dubsteppy, Falling Apart showed a shift to more synth-driven ambient narratives. Being one of the vanguard of Canada’s electronic music output, Reed is now totally into brooding but soothing piano compositions, as his aptly named Music For 1 Piano, 2 Pianos, & More Pianos shows. Released as cassette via 1080p, these lullabies are your excellent companion for trips far behind the rainbow, to the promised land where My Little Ponies roam freely and – most probably – mildly depressed.
We know the Great Elsewhere was last month’s theme, but we can’t help but dip into the Éthiopiques collection now. It’s been around for ages, but what if some of you have been missing out on the sweetness? So for the sake of our night’s rest, here it goes. At the end of the ‘90s, Paris-based world-music label Buda Musique decided to release compilations of albums and singles previously released in Ethiopia in the ‘60s and ‘70s by Amha Records, Kaifa Records and Philips-Ethiopia. We’re completely smitten with the incredibly heart-warming melodic blues of Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam – a nun! – and the uplifting and festive tunes of Bèzuayènè Zègèyè and Mahmoud Ahmed.

Art: The Heavy Collective Sydney-based Jack Harries and Geordie Cargill make up The Heavy Collective. Together, they showcase photographers through creative projects, exhibitions and online media. Being struck by the power of some portfolios – more often than not with a socially relevant, documentary interest – is the basis for the Q&As they present with the people behind the projects. After releasing the EPs Girl and You Are Like LA, Danish singer and producer Anders Rhedin is now freshly signed to our long love Captured Tracks, with his recent Oui! EP. Though his sound defies simple classification, it’s a tasty combo of Europop and darkwave. Or, as Rhedin poetically states, Dinner sounds a bit like ‘a sun-bleached cassette tape you’d find stuck behind your car’s dashboard, last played at a party in Dusseldorf in 1984, full of echoes of sweaty depressions, spiritual longings and earlymorning trances’. And that’s just the stuff we like. Currently based in LA, he’s working on his 2015 LP.
Label: PC Music Being draped in an ultra-glossy cloak of mystery, the exact nature of Londonbased label PC Music is hard to pinpoint. One could say it’s a label, subgenre and subculture at once. AG Cook seems to be the man in charge, Danny L Harle (from Dux Content) and LOGO Magazine’s Hannah Diamond are his partners in crime, although Sophie, Kanye West and GFOTY also frequent the inner circle. Incorpor-ating whatever influence they find suitable, PC Music is releasing some of the freshest and most exciting pop around these days, sounding colour-

Magazine: LOGO Magazine
Since you’re in a PC Music vibe anyway, make sure to check out LOGO Magazine as well. Specialising in the intersection between art, music and style, with a particular emphasis on the latest aesthetic and digital trends, LOGO wants to create and showcase forward-thinking, progressive creative work online. From style profile shoots – with Taiwanese Tumblr sensation Lolo Chinghsuan, for example – to inspirational interviews with fashion designers worldwide and Subaru-themed mixtapes, it’s so futuristic, you’ll feel like you’re living in 2025.
Having founded the Danse Noire label with like-minded friends, Aïsha Devi is central to it. After previous releases from Vaghe Stelle and El Mahdy Jr it was up to Devi herself again. Stepping away from the more pop-oriented Aura 4 Everyone, the Hakken Dub/Throat Dub EP reveals itself as a true gabber anthem tribute. ‘Hakken Dub’ has so many beats per minute that even a blitzkrieg seems slow, and is guided by Devi’s haunting vocals. For ‘Throat Dub’, Devi seems to have found inspiration in the tradition of throat singers. The release is topped off with remixes by Hieroglyphic Being and our friend IVVVO.

We Visit You: Mats Van Eccelpoel Photo by Sam Smekens
What’s the first record you bought? Thomas Azier’s EP Hylas (last year – shame on me). I saw him at a festival in the Netherlands and it was amazing. Your first ever music-related memory? Well, from what I remember, the DJ was pouring some red liquor into my mouth while my head was on the stage. Best. Party. Ever! What’s your favourite pastime? Drinking coffee before 12, drinking wine after. What does an ideal lazy Sunday look like for you? Doing absolutely nothing, and I’m good at it! Oh, and waking up next to my boyfriend! Which future Subbacultcha! show are you looking forward to? Definitely Wastelands Festival! Filming last year’s Wastelands was awesome. Since we’re being religious this month, are you a believer? I don’t believe. I’m just trying to believe in myself most of the time.
Name: Mats Van Eccelpoel Age: 21 Home: Ghent Zodiac sign: Taurus Website: matsvaneccelpoel. tumblr.com
Tell us, what do you do in life? I just graduated as a ‘digital designer’ from LUCA Ghent. Now I’m working as an intern at Turbulence. I also love to hang out with friends and drink wine. What projects are you working on? It’s always something different. I love video, so most of my work is videos, animations, 3D stuff… I’m also doing graphic design for brands/bands. What inspires you? The simplicity of things. You sometimes can’t tell, but, I love the saying ‘less is more’. What do you like best about your place? It’s big, white and filled with the things that I love. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? I discover new artists every day – thanks Soundcloud! Most of what I listen to is XXYYXX-minimal-ish. It keeps me focused and at the same time relaxed.

The Religious Issue. Interview Fights, self-abuse and jail: though you can’t tell from these pics, taken with drummer Kyle, Domenic Palermo has had a rough past. It wasn’t the super deep conversation about religion as a third grader that really

Nothing. Continued How would you describe the music you’re making? There’s always a hidden beauty and melancholy in our music. For anything we produce we try to be really pretty and sad at the same time. That’s really the only basis for anything we ever do. Do you think that melancholy is related to your rough past? My life is no different than a lot of people’s. Everyone has their rough patches – mine happened to go on for over a decade. So I have a cynical way of looking at everything, it’s kinda hard not to. But there are a lot of positive things that come out of things like that – not to say that I am positive in any way, but it could be worse; I could still be sitting in a cell like half my friends, or be dead like some of the people I grew up with. What helped you move on from this dark sequence of events? I never really came out of it. When I came home from prison, it was really dark. I went through self-abuse with heavy drinking and drug use. During this phase I was really stagnant, not really doing or creating anything. I don’t really know what the real turning point was and what made me pick up the eight-track to start recording guitar stuff and write. It’s always good to have an outlet and not keep everything bottled up. Whenever things are getting too heavy, music definitely helps in coping with them. But it’s nice to have something beyond that as well, like being able to write a song and have the writing making an impact instead of just being on a piece of paper. Were you raised in a religious family? I was born Roman Catholic. My dad left the house pretty early on, so my mom had to take care of my sister, my brother and I. My mom was working two jobs so she could pay the bills. We were living in this very poor neighbourhood in Philly. Even at a young age I was kind of always getting into trouble, but my mom always stuck it out

The Religious Issue. Interview ‘My mom told me, “There is no God. You are your own person, faith in your hands,” which was really deep for a third grader’ with me. She decided it’d be good to send me to a Catholic school for a couple of years to have a fair chance of staying out of trouble. In third grade I got hit by a car. I broke my finger, my left arm and, like, five ribs. I was in this body cast, stuck in the house. My mom would take time off of work to make sure I was okay at home. We didn’t have the money to stay in the hospital – the insurance company wasn’t really covering anything – and the school was on my mom’s back asking for tuition fees. Even knowing the situation we were in, the school was relentless about this tuition, so my mom decided to take me out of the school. I remember having a conversation with her about religion, she told me, ‘There is no God. You are your own person, faith in your hands,’ which was really deep for a third grader. I kinda got what she was saying. This conversation really did change everything for me, honestly. It gave me a head start to form my own opinion about the world. Is Guilty of Everything a repentance? It’s more of a confession. I’m not speaking for myself, I’m speaking for humankind as a whole. We’re not what everyone thinks we are and for the most part we’re not a good thing. The Religious Issue. Interview As a kid, Matt Flegel felt pressured to stand up on his chair at Bible camp because everyone else did. Yep, that’s what it took to prove your love for Jesus. Later on, he started playing bass in several bands, most notably Women, but now he’s working on his own stuff with Viet Cong. And we’re hella excited about it! We talked transcendental experiences, absurdism and the ritual of eating Interview by Gerlin Heestermans Photos shot by Colin Way in Calgary, Canada
Were you raised religiously? I was. My mom’s parents were Mormon but she detached herself from that and turned to Christianity, and then my Dad wasn’t religious. But as kids we went to church every Sunday or we’d go to Bible camp. It was Anglican. It’s different from Catholicism ’cause it’s more… Jesus, it’s full-on Jesus. It’s less ritualistic; it’s more of a social thing. After church there would be another two hours of drinking coffee and talking about Christ. How does your mom feel about your lifestyle? We don’t talk about religion because she knows it’s not a conversation that will go anywhere good. But I don’t love her any less and I understand why she needs religion. I don’t condemn anyone who

Viet Cong. Continued needs it to be alive; I just don’t like it when they push it on others. Do you believe in anything? I’m more of an absurdist. I feel like everything is ridiculous and there’s not really an explanation for anything and I’m fine with that. I do believe that there’s maybe some kind of weird energy or that there’s something different happening in a different universe. Who knows? Do you have habits/rituals you perform at certain moments? I think eating is a ritual [Laughs]. Seriously though, when you’re on tour, for me one of the exciting things is finding that region’s food. Like when you’re on the West Coast, you want to eat fresh fish or seafood because it’s everywhere. I live in Calgary in the middle of the prairies and there’s no fresh seafood here! And drinking. Drinking beer is absolutely a huge tour ritual. Is it a bonding thing? Yeah, I think so – both the drinking and the eating. I think eating is a huge ritual for everyone all the time. People don’t respect it enough. Another ritual is that sometimes before we play a show we’ll all stand in a circle and put our hands together. We’re usually laughing our asses off when we do it, though. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where it felt almost like a religious experience? I think so. We did a tour on the East Coast of America early July and we had a day off and we were recommended this spot in upstate New York and we just wandered up this river all day and it was beautiful and we didn’t see anyone. That kind of thing. A lot of my writing I do in my head before I even play an instrument or sing a note and sometimes when everyone gets together and it sounds like what I had going on in my head, then you get sort of a religious feeling. Maybe ‘religious’ is not the word, though.

Viet Cong. Continued ‘I feel like everything is ridiculous and there’s not really an explanation for anything and I’m fine with that’ Transcendental? Yeah, that makes more sense. When it’s something beyond what’s happening. Would you ever consider getting a tattoo that says, ‘Music is my religion’? [Laughs] I would never even consider getting any tattoo. I’m too hairy. You wouldn’t even see it. I’d have to be shaving everything all the time. What’s your favourite religion and why? If I had to choose one, I’d go with Buddhism. They’ve never been responsible for that much war and violence, whereas the other big religions have. And they don’t come knocking on your door to convince you to convert to Buddhism. Do you know about the Church of Dudeism? It would probably be right up your alley. Oh yeah, is that from The Big Lebowski? That would probably be just as good as Buddhism.

Iceage From the triskele and triquetra of Celtic mythology to the athame, hecate and pentacle in Wiccan tradition: symbols bear a powerful meaning. And what’s the harm in using them, if it may help to bring about a desired goal? Though it probably won’t be for crop germination, we can’t be sure what the tattoos of Elias Bender Rønnenfelt & co mean. Listening to their brand new LP, it might be the power of a new sound that’s less furiously dark. Scene Report Amsterdam

Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! Every month we’ll feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report When you enter Amsterdam as an outsider, you’ll probably notice a couple of things. First, there are the heavily populated bike lanes, in which the in-crowd aggressively ring their bells and get pissed off at unsuspecting tourists crossing the road. Which gets us to the second main feature of the town’s infrastructure: there are a lot of ‘visitors’ dwelling around in this city. And technically I, Sander van Dalsum, am one of these people. I write for a bunch of publications based in our capital, like Glamcult, Noisey – and of course, Subbacultcha!. Although I prefer Rotterdam as a place to live, it’s Amsterdam I go to when I want to enjoy live music or a good club night. While the rivalry between those two cities doesn’t go much further than some sports-related foolishness, the music scene in Amsterdam is much more cultivated, and people actually show up at gigs. Hopefully none of my Rotterdam acquaintances will read this. There are a ton of promoters in Amsterdam who organise quality shows. Much like Subbacultcha!, there’s the DIY spirit of Indie Indie, curating small, eclectic nights in several venues. The folks of Knekelhuis don’t feel like committing to one genre either, their italo-disco affection gets tangled with a fascination for black metal. And there’s The Rest is Noise, inviting experimentalists from all over the globe to perform their arts in carefully selected venues. The renowned Pitchfork-approved bands get lured to this city to play, but also the less established artists make their way here to do intimate shows. The crazy thing about this whole affair is that even
31
Scene Report. Continued the smallest, least social-media savvy acts will draw a decent crowd. De Nieuwe Anita is a prime example of this magic. This cosy, living room-like bar has all the stuff you need to feel at home – the couches, the dinner tables, the soft lighting that makes you feel pretty – but there’s also a stage down in the basement. It doesn’t matter who plays there, because these evenings will sell out in no time. If you’re looking for a closely knit rave in a grittier atmosphere – and who doesn’t love just that? – then head to OT301. This venue has a robust but fantastic sound system, cheap beers and has housed some of the better club nights I’ve attended, with the likes of Huerco S., Teengirl Fantasy and Holly Herndon taking the stage in recent history. If you like to take this a step further, you’ll definitely fancy the notorious Trouw. The most relevant electronic musicians and DJs play here and these nights seem to go on for ever. Be quick, though, as this club will close soon. The list goes on; near the Vondelpark you find a colourful little squat named Occii. The interior doesn’t have as much glow as the outside, but you’ll definitely embrace this gloom and doom if you appreciate a good garage-rock band or anything that specific. But let’s not forget about the audiophile haven of Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, or the lovely view at Canvas, all of them rest stops to zone out to new music. But let’s talk a little about the local artists playing these venues, and the labels that release their work. I’ve been listening a lot to Young Marco, who recently released his first LP full of house-tinged exotics, referencing Yellow Magic Orchestra on the go. Then there’s lots of talk about Bea1991, with her down-tempo electronic pop music sounding like MTV’s chill-out era got locked up in stasis. Noisemakers Katadreuffe and Apneu are defying genres with their jangly, deranged guitars and drums, roleplaying in each other’s bands and making names for themselves while doing so. Back to electronics,

They do a good job distributing the works of labels like L.I.E.S., Future Times, Peoples Potential Unlimited and many other suppliers of abstract music. Much mystery surrounds Zoology Records – I’m not even sure they’re based in Amsterdam, although their Facebook page says so. I consider this label as one of the most forward-thinking clubs of musicians in the country, with their ’80s-referencing, post-modern pop music sounding like it’s way more otherworldly than Amsterdam could ever be. Also be sure to check out the varied back catalogue of Subroutine Records, or the weirdo pop music of NON Records. Books Text and artwork by Gabriela González
The Pagan Dream of the Renaissance by Joscelyn Godwin Before embarking on what would turn out to be a very peculiar trip to Italy, I heard about a book that could serve as an unofficial guide to the villas and gardens of the Renaissance. It wasn’t until I got my paws on it that I realised it was much more than that: Joscelyn Godwin’s meticulous research and hypnotic prose vividly outline the process wherein magic and imagination were reinjected into the strict religious societies of postMedieval Europe. Pagan and mythical gods, though abhorred by the powers of the Church, never truly abandoned the Western psyche, with their existence standing in as a projection of the archetypal patterns that reign human behaviour and desire. Oddly enough, this shift in consciousness was instigated by religious leaders themselves: with progressive patrons such as the
Medicis, it’s no wonder the clergy would sidestep doctrine to summon the symbolic power of pagan figures as strong allegorical and political tools. Godwin explores and extols the worldly results of this divine seduction: the garden as a meeting place under the watchful gaze of Apollo and Athena; the various godly interventions in the frescoes and murals we all know; the long-suppressed bursts of joyous celebration, undoubtedly blessed by Dionysus himself; and the euphoria of feeling, for the first time in centuries, that our humanity is not a sin in itself, for its downfalls and mysteries have long preceded us and lain dormant on the highest slopes of our shared Olympian dreams.

Zéro de conduite: Story of Kindness
In 2013 the documentary filmmakers Elias Grootaers, Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes founded the production platform Zéro de conduite. The name is a reference to Jean Vigo’s eponymous film, a lyrical ode to youthful rebellion. For this evening they selected a programme around the committed and vibrant film Chuyen tu te [The Story of Kindness or How to Behave] (1987) by the Vietnamese documentary filmmaker Tran Van Thuy. Dying of cancer, the cameraman Dong Xuan Thuyet asks his friends to make a film on the subject of ‘tu te’, on human relations, fraternity or, simply, kindness. ‘The idea of tu te has its origin in two old Chinese-Vietnamese words. “Tu” means the smallest element. “Te” is the most subtle matter. These two words combined mean that we have to pay attention to the smallest details.’ A film evening on kindness, sensibility and how to engage with the world and its dwellers. The Zéro de conduite evening takes place at Beursschouwburg, Brussels on 05 November, 20.30.

Phill Niblock music and films
Cinema of poetry from Chris Marker and Marguerite Duras. Through conjugation of all the tenses, distorting the relation between sound and image, these films are geo-temporal maps for time travels in imaginative realities, echoing possible futures from perspectives of historicity and actuality, all constructed from the raw material of reality. Duras’ empty city is a blank page from which memory emerges. Marker’s abundant photo album invites you to dream the world. The double bill screens at Art Cinema OFFoff, Ghent on 17 November, 20.30.
The Movement of People Working (1973-1991) is a series of films by the American filmmaker and composer Phill Niblock. Weaving, painting, carving, threshing or fishing, bodies are set in a relentless motion creating a hypnotic tapestry of gestures and techniques of immense choreographic beauty. The films, often presented on several screens are accompanied by Niblock’s live music, making it both the least obvious and the best possible screen expression of his musical and cinematographic vision. Go to Concertgebouw Brugge on 08 November, 15.00 (Slow Festival).

We have a true Burger Records night coming up for you! Gap Dream’s most recent release, Shine Your Light, features fuzzy garage rock, psych-pop melodies, surf-pop harmonies and a little glam thrown in for good measure. You’ll get a hint of The Beach Boys, Velvet Underground and Animal Collective all rolled into one. Although frontman Fulvimar has said goodbye to his ‘going nowhere life’ in Ohio, he’s still a dreamer who likes to stay put in his chill spot, jamming on his vintage drums and keyboards, singing about empty days and a broken heart. Tomorrows Tulips are totally into the Nineties DIY aesthetics and just released their third LP, When. Come check them out!
In between Liège and Aachen, the informal capital of German-speaking Belgium, all-round collective Meakusma presents Lord Tang, Tim Berresheim and Floris Vanhoof. There’s a timeless quality to Lord Tang’s sounds, reflecting the moonlight of a future time, floating in a twilight haze. Being a contemporary German visual artist, Berresheim doesn’t mind taking a trip to the sonic spheres. He also runs the New Amerika label and produces music together with fellow artist Jonathan Meese. Needless to say, our friend Floris Vanhoof is one of Belgium’s most original performers, mixing his musical vision with a wonderful visual component that is also manipulated live.

their 2011 self-titled LP, out on Slovenly Records, proved to be interesting, sporting psychedelic rock’n’roll, influenced equally by the Western pop past and Greece’s folk history. Whilst working on their second LP, they recently released their Vegetable EP. Deeper and deeper into the sonic soil they dig, harvesting fresh, organic ingredients for their psychedelic salad.
03 November - OFFoff, Ghent 20.30 | €9 | Free for members French artist and alchemist Gaelle Rouard is a well-liked guest at many alternative film festivals. She treats the pellicule chemically and manipulates two 16mm projectors live, creating a completely new work of art, a live crossover between film, music and improvisation. Using manipulation rather than editing, double projection rather than superimposition, Rouard thus reveals a true poetics of gesture on a material as uncertain and fragile as film.

Martin Scorsese says it left him ‘speechless’. And for Nick Cave, it’s ‘the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence’. Yep, Wake in Fright might not ring a bell, but released in 1971, the same year as A Clockwork Orange, this lost classic from the Outback is at least as good as – if not way better than – that popular flick. John Grant, a bonded teacher, arrives in a rough Outback mining town, planning to stay overnight before starting his holiday. But one night stretches to several and amidst fighting kangaroos and crazy-eyed inhabitants, he seems to be plunging headlong towards his own destruction, sipping one drink after another. An exquisite thriller, one hell of a ride!

But when it comes to their ambitions, they really do know what they want: ‘We have the tools and we have the talent. No show too small, no fee too big. We're ready for anything.’ And yes,

Black Emperor, inter alia, making this year’s debut LP More Than Any Other day all the more a baffling and welcome surprise. As a kid, RussianAmerican Nika Roza Danilova was fixated on becoming an opera singer. Luckily for us, she chose a different path. Boy, every time we hear ‘Avalanche’, we still get the chills. Now her fifth studio album, Taiga, is out, named after the Russian word for boreal forests. Again, it’s filled with lovely dark synth pop, albeit more poppy than before.

Domenic Palermo used to be the brain behind hardcore act Horror Show, but when that was put on hold after a twoyear prison sentence, it took him a while to find his way back to music. But he got back on his feet. Nothing started out as a solo project, resulting from Palermo staying indoors all the time, creating an online demo with a hundred cassettes that sold extremely quickly. After going through countless members, Palermo and his new-found band mates released the critically acclaimed LP Guilty of Everything. Five-piece band Newmoon’s debut EP featured post-punk layered in reverb, hinting at Slowdive and bands like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Together with Ghent-based Mahdieh Fahimi, Amirali Ghasemi from the Teheran Parkin Gallery has launched an open call in Teheran. At OFFoff they will be showcasing a selection of shorts that reveal the psychological vulnerability of the Iranian people. Therefore, it might be useful to know ‘parishani’ means ‘confusion’. From music videos to performance fragments and animation shorts, it’ll be interesting to see how the theme is approached from different angles. Bigger names and young talent will be alternating.
The fact that A Most Wanted Man stars Philip Seymour Hoffman for the last time should be more than reason enough to go watch Anton Corbijn’s exquisite third feature, a thriller based on the novel by John le Carré. But, since you might want to know something more, here it goes: when a half-Chechen, half-Russian, brutally tortured immigrant turns up in Hamburg’s Islamic community, laying claim to his father's fortune, both German and US security agencies take a close interest. What is his true identity? Is he a victim or a dangerous extremist? Nerve wracking till the last shot.

Just as lead single ‘The Lord’s Favorite’ made us guess, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt & co have adopted a whole new sound on their brand new Plowing Into The Field Of Love LP. This shouldn’t be a complete surprise, since You’re Nothing, the 2013 follow-up to their 2011 debut New Brigade, already showed a more refined take on their raunchy and passionate post-punk. But still, the leap from the initial furiously dark sound to the present alternative rock vibe that sometimes reminds of Nick Cave, is pretty big. But don’t be fooled: singing ‘Whatever I do, I don’t repent. I’ll keep pissing against the moon’, Elias is still the angry Dane you got to know three years ago.
British indie-rock outfit Catfish and the Bottlemen, formed in Wales, initially started out by playing Beatles covers in local bars. But in the soundproofed room of singer Van McCann’s family bed and breakfast, they really hit it off and started looking for something more. Playing over 250 shows in 2012 and the beginning of 2013, they got signed. Last September, they released their debut LP, The Balcony, on Universal. Their single ‘Kathleen’ was produced by Arctic Monkeys producer Jim Abbsiss. Young, energetic and a tad nostalgic.

Originally formed seven years ago as an electronic project that quickly gained popularity at Portland house parties, Wampire totally shifted directions throughout the years. Debut LP Curiosity was an alluring combo of different sonic flavours, on which you’d recognise surf-rock, kraut, new-wave and psychpop influences all at once, and there was even more going on. It was silly, frantic, paranoid, surreal, playful and danceable. Together, the chemistry of Rocky Tinder, Eric Phipps and producer Jacob Portrait, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s bassist, is nothing but infectious, setting your legs on fire.
Though it might sound like a minor mission impossible to combine Yemenite folk singing with electronic dance music and a lot of natural groove, that’s what A-WA, pronounced Ay-wa, does. The three sisters, Tair, Liron & Tagel Haim, grew up in the small desert village of Shaharut in the southern Israeli Arava Valley. For their debut album, they’re interpreting women’s love and protest songs in Yemeni-Arabic dialect that were first recorded in the early ’60s by the Yemeni singer-songwriter Shlomo Moga'a. That their sound is exotically fresh seems to be the least you can say.
