The idea resulted in the founding of Templar, a new platform for digital artists, DJs and musicians. Ambivalence is being attracted and repulsed at the exact same time; it’s uncertainty and the inability to make a decision; it’s the simultaneous desire to say or do two conflicting things. It’s also the main trait of Ambivalently Yours, an anonymous (but presumably female) illustrator exploring everyday feminist convictions and concerns. Her ambivalence lies in the embrace of contradictory feelings towards having traditionally female tastes and desires as well as an urge for radical

Over there 25 artists are challenged to create a piece that perfectly fits its exhibition space, in this case being 3000m² of slippery glittering ice. In doing so NEIN expands its search for new ways of presenting art to an audience, an interesting initiative which art centre CAMPO was more than willing to support. Interview
M.E.S.H. With the techno and minimal house scenes continuing to consolidate their reign over Berlin’s nightlife, one club night stood in unwavering defiance: Janus. Originated by artist-turnedproducer M.E.S.H. (aka James Whipple), the night came together with the object of transcending the constraints of the ‘hype, hate, copy’ trend cycle, garnering a league of like-minded contemporaries in the form of Lotic, KaBlam and Total Freedom. Said residency is now sadly defunct, but Whipple continues to channel its spirit via his own musical endeavours with his acclaimed Scythians EP, released two years ago, and a debut full-length, Piteous Gate, the following year. We called him up to discuss his attraction to the melodramatic Skype interview by Deva Rao Photos shot by Ina Niehoff in Berlin, Germany

Interview
M.E.S.H. Considering the melodrama of your debut album, Piteous Gate, I’m curious as to whether this theatricality extends to your day-to-day. Shit – that’s a good question. I guess it’s an interaction between sort of histrionic feelings, the feelings you can have in a nightclub, social anxiety and the opposite, having a dopamine rush off being with people you like or hearing good music. Maybe you feel rejected, maybe you feel horny, maybe you feel sad… these places where we experience music are places in society where we’re kind of allowed to feel these things – things you wouldn’t necessarily feel sanctioned to be able to feel in your daily life. Who would you say influenced you in making the album? That’s pretty hard, man. I mean, all my friends and the people I know that are making music right now. I mean, everyone from the Janus people like KaBlam and Lotic, to Elysia Crampton, TCF and Amnesia Scanner. Just the whole crew. You’ve spoken before about producers making unconsidered use of samples. Do you feel a responsibility to ensure sounds are recontextualised respectfully? Yeah, absolutely. As a DJ, I draw from so many different genres and it’s important for me to represent that with the way that I DJ. But at the same time, as an artist and music producer, I’m not really interested in quoting other people’s voices in that way. It’s more about drawing influence where I can, but trying to also stand on my own two feet and have my own point of view. I’m not gonna go release a conceptual ballroom vogue record, you know?

Interview
I mean, you could… I definitely could. It wouldn’t be very good [Laughs]. But it’s tricky. People are so ready to demonise people and make outrage their hobby. But at the same time, it’s a really important debate. And it’s really important to be sensitive about context. You broadened my perception of what club music can be, especially when I first heard Scythians. Do you intentionally challenge your audience during your live sets? It’s funny because I find the whole thing of, like, a DJ ‘educating’ a

‘Places where we experience music are places in society where we’re kind of allowed to feel’ crowd sort of pretentious. But it’s more like, when we did Janus parties in Berlin, they weren’t these austere music nerd kind of things. It’s more a house-party vibe, you know what I mean? It’s less about challenging people in this boring, serious music way and more like opening up what you can do as a DJ in terms of what you’re going to allow yourself to play. But not in the sense of punishing or educating people. It’s more about an expanded palette of sounds you can draw from. That’s the way I see it with my own DJ-ing. I read that you recorded a lot of the album in a state of isolation. True? I wouldn’t call it isolation, I still had healthy relationships with my friends and stuff. But I guess I was going out slightly less during that period, for sure. So you’re not, like, a hermitic misanthrope. No, no. It’s interesting that that’s come up, ’cause I’m not a super extroverted person, but… I like people, man. I leave the house a lot [Laughs]. Leaving the house is good; people are as well. It’s good to establish you’re okay with humans, set the record straight. M.E.S.H. plays BRDCST at AB, Brussels on 25 March. The show is free for Subbacultcha members.

Cocaine Piss It’s a typical story: four friends growing up in Nowhere Town, bonding over out-there music. But Cocaine Piss are not your typical band: pure, concentrated fury unfurls when they’re on stage, and when it ends you don’t know what hit you. We met them at the Sound of the Belgian Underground, and in between butt-prodding and munching apples (not a euphemism), we discussed teenage idols, reams of side projects, and the importance of never staying bored

Interview
How did you guys start playing together? Aurélie: We started two and a half years ago. Yannick: Yeah, but we’ve been friends since waaaay before. Aurélie: We all grew up in the same shitty town in South Belgium - it was so fucking boring. We were going to shows ‘cause it was the only thing to do and everyone was starting a band. All you do out there is listen to music - it sounds so old school! But if you had a great CD, you’d exchange or make mixes and that’s what we did. I was really into The Distillers, ‘cause Brody Dalle was like my idol. She looked so badass - I knew I wanted to do that one day. Yannick: Yeah, we were totally in the punk scene; back then it was all bands like F-Minus, Leftöver Crack... Mathias: Noise music! Aurélie: We were definitely into the noise scene - basically anything where you can get this sort of crazy energy.
20
Cocaine Piss
‘Everything is not about your own band all the time. It’s about the scene, and it’s all we wanna live’ What was you guys’ first show like? Aurélie: Normally it was supposed to be a one-show project and we did it at the Carlo Levi, which is closed now. Mathias: A really punk and crusty place! We had fun, though. Julien: Nobody in the public left, so...[laughs] You’ll be playing the AB twice in two months. Any expectations? Aurélie: Well, it’s very fancy [laughs]. There’s also a bunch of fucking amazing people working here; I didn’t even believe that it was possible. It’s funny because we started at the Carlo Levi and now we’re playing the AB three times in five months. It’s great, though for us it’s always, like, ‘We can play at your place? Thank you!’ What other projects do you guys have? Yannick: There’s a band called Umungus that me and Mathias play in - it’s more psychedelic/jazz/world stuff. I’ve got another band named Daggers; we’ve been playing for ten years now. Julien: Yeah, they played with my old band in Switzerland called Elizabeth - we toured three times with them, in Russia, Cuba... Yannick: But Cocaine Piss is the king project. Julien: Especially now!
21
Cocaine Piss Oh yeah, you guys have a big trip coming up! Aurélie: One week in Chicago recording with Steve Albini! We’ve only exchanged emails so far but I’m sure he’s cool, I’ve got a good feeling about him. He is a big figure for us: he recorded F-Minus and a bunch of other bands that created us. Yannick: We used to play all this stuff really loud when we were younger, so we’ve been listening to the type of sound that he’s doing since forever. Aurélie: It’s in our DNA, and the opportunity to record with him, knowing that he’s done all the stuff we were listening to when we were kids...it’s a fucking dream. Where do you guys see this going? Yannick: Right now, it’s all about the album and getting it done. It’s going to be really trashy, kind of the same vibe we had on the first one. Julien: Some slow songs and everything! But definitely more fast than slow [laughs]. Yannick: Fourteen songs, 20 minutes! Aurélie: Yeah, the album is the priority right now but it’s not like when it’s done we’re just gonna sit on our butts waiting. Yannick: We’ve also been organising shows for the last ten years as a collective [Jungle Booking]. Aurélie: It’s all part of what we do: everything is not about your own band all the time. It’s about the scene, and it’s all we wanna live: playing shows, watching shows, organising stuff, meeting new people, doing it all over again. Yannick: And never getting bored! Cocaine Piss plays BRDCST at AB, Brussels on March 24 and Het Bos, Antwerp on 09 March. This last show is free for members.

BRDCST Festival Children of the Light (Christopher Gabriel and Arnout Hulskamp) create immersive experiences and installations, with light as their main tool and canvas. As part of live music performances, they play with the oppositional forces between light and darkness. Their travelling light has led them to perform across the globe, for the likes of DARKSIDE (Nicolas Jaar & Dave Harrington) and HOWLING (RYX & Frank Wiedemann) and on stages ranging from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Art Basel Miami to the Stedelijk Museum, TrouwAmsterdam, The New Institute and TodaysArt, to name but a few. The Story behind BRDCST
Interview by Julien Van de Casteele Photos by Tina Herbots, shot in Huis 23, Brussels
Interview In preparation for BRDCST, we climbed the stairs going up above the AB Café to find ourselves in Huis 23, the cosy, vintage living room set to become the beating heart of the festival. We sat down with Mich Leemans and Kurt Overbergh, programmers at AB and the guys behind the project, to discuss the intentions of this very eclectic event and the importance for major actors like AB to keep an eye on those underground acts shaping the future of music. How long have you guys been in the music industry? Kurt: I’m the artistic director at AB, I’ve been working here since 1997. I love to do the programming for small bands but I also need to do it for larger ones that are much further from my heart so that it keeps the whole thing running. I’ve been in the music industry since the mid-’90s. I came from record company Rough Trade where I used to promote artists like Jeff Buckley and Pavement, totally unknown at the time. Mich: I started in the music industry at a booking agency that was focused solely on Belgian bands. After that, I joined AB. I’ve been here for eight years. I mainly take care of all the events taking place at Huis 23 and any other special projects like SOBU or expos. Huis 23 is one of the best things that’s happened to AB because it enables the fans to get closer and connect with bands. Kurt: Many great artists have been interviewed here, like Michael Gira
31
The Story behind BRDCST
‘The idea is to open up the minds of the people showing up at the show; lining up Battles with Mbongwana Star’ (Swans), Sleaford Mods and Squarepusher. This space has allowed us to rethink how to invite artists over. Huis 23 is really low cost and free of all the elements linked to booking an artist. It makes me jealous of Mich sometimes [Laughs]. I read that Huis 23 will be the centrepiece of the festival. Kurt: When you’ve worked somewhere for a long time you tend to go into autopilot. With BRDCST we try to reinvent ourselves. We decided to launch a festival that doesn’t use AB’s main halls but instead Huis 23 as the main venue and make it free for anyone. Mich: We like to call it the zero edition, because it’s more of a trial; we want to see if the free thing works. There’ll be talks here, guys from Rough Trade talking about their selection of the month, Steve Ignorant (Crass) who will give a lecture, people from Consouling Sounds will come over to talk about how they started their label – and concerts, of course. So there’ll constantly be something happening here. Kurt: An important part of these events is the Wondertalks, where we want to share our questions about the music industry. For example, how the hell is Rough Trade doing so well and opening new stores in a music economy that is increasingly becoming more digital? Or with Steve Ignorant from Crass, the ultimate ’80s punk band, we want to confront him with the fact that nowadays there are a lot more punk bands led by women like Perfect Pussy or Cocaine Piss.
32
The Story behind BRDCST Is that the goal, sharing your thoughts and tastes? Kurt: Yes, the idea is to broadcast our recommendations, to say, ‘Hey, listen to Mbongwana Star, to M.E.S.H., to Lotic. This is great stuff, we only discovered it last week.’ Mich: AB is lucky to have a team that has the mind of a smaller venue, but working in a large one like Bataclan or Paradiso. Kurt: It gives AB the opportunity to host events like SOBU and serve as a multiplicator. That’s the same with BRDCST, which features underground bands like Lotic, M.E.S.H. and Cocaine Piss – which are getting major press coverage. How did BRDCST come about? Kurt: Two years ago, I went to Le Guess Who and I was overwhelmed by the fact that they had Selda, this Turkish artist who has been around for 40 years, sharing the roster with Stephen O’Malley from Sunn O))) and Sleaford Mods. I had the same experience when I went to Incubate last year. Though they intermingled drone, world music, classical jazz and hardcore punk, they still managed to have an identity. We wanna do that with BRDCST. We wanted an open door to all kinds of genre, to everything that has inspired Mich and I. The idea is to open up the minds of the people showing up at the show; lining up Battles with Mbongwana Star. What’s the thing you’re looking forward to the most? Kurt: Going home after these four days having this incredible feeling of energy coming from an unknown place and telling myself, ‘Yes, it’s working.’ BRDCST, AB, Brussels, 24-26 March

Wondertalk 2: Nigel House Rough Trade and its Album of the Month Selection 25 March - Huis 23, AB, Brussels 18.00 I Free (seats are limited)
Wondertalk The Wondertalks originated from the festival creators, Mich and Kurt, wanting to share their questions concerning the music industry. Each day, artists, authors and music insiders will drop by for a chat and to enlighten us on a variety of subjects.
In 1976, the first seeds of Rough Trade were planted when Geoff Travis opened a record store in Kensington Park Road, West London. Rough Trade soon became a label and a distribution channel for various independent labels. In 1978, it was decided to split the label and the shop into separate entities. Following this, a number of young employees, including Nigel House, took over the shop for the price of the records in stock. Under the same name, they managed to save Rough Trade from ruin. Wondertalk 1: Steve Ignorant on the Legendary Anarcho-punk Band Crass 24 March - Huis 23, AB, Brussels 18.00 I Free (seats are limited) Steve Ignorant will open the Wondertalk series with a chat about his life before, during and after Crass, the ultimate punk band of the late ’70s. Ignorant is often – and rightly – considered to be the godfather of the genre. Together with Penny Rimbaud, he established the extremely influential DIY anarcho-punk band Crass, which lived from 1977 to 1984 and released unignorable efforts such as Stations Of The Crass, The Feeding Of The 5000 and Christ The

Festival programme classical music finds a new outlet in pianist/composer Michael Price, who has collaborated as music editor in Hollywood blockbusters and has appeared on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall. His latest album harkens back to a pre-war romanticism, evoking timeless emotive power and pre-digital rawness.
Music Programme Cocaine Piss + Steve Ignorant’s Slice Of Life 24 March - AB Club, AB, Brussels 20.00 I €15 Steve Ignorant, considered the godfather of punk thanks to his extremely influential DIY anarcho-punk band Crass, brings us his latest project, Slice of Life. Acoustic and intimate, it sounds like the opposite of Crass. But with the inclusion of Crass classics and spoken-word elements, this remains a very anarchic affair. And from distant Liège comes the abrasive energy bomb known as Cocaine Piss. Their debut cassette is already sold-out and contains short, sharp and explosive songs to leave you lightning struck on the spot. Watch out for their upcoming first official release, produced by none other than Steve Albini himself.
Tsembla + Pak Yan Lau 24 March - Huis 23, AB, Brussels 20.00 I Free (seats are limited)
Pak Yan is the pivotal figure in Brussels’ groove/trance project Going, plays piano with Lauroshilau and writes music for dance, theatre and film. With prepared piano, synths and toy instruments, Pak Yan Lau’s main focus is on free improvisation and poetic sound mosaics. During BRDCST she’ll present her recently released Solo Books. Tsembla is the musical alter-ego of Swedish-Finnish artist Marja Johansson. Making use of a broad range of instruments, electronica, objects and samples, Tsembla’s music surfs the waves of oblique melodies, abstract vocals and varying textures. Her loosely

GoGo Penguin + Pomrad + De Beren Gieren 25 March - AB Box, AB, Brussels 19.00 I €19
The music of London producer Visionist catapults us into the future with meticulous vocal samples that put him in the ranks of electronica conjurers like Holly Herndon and Arca. Backed by the cult PAN label, his debut, Safe, is a new beacon of minimalistic spooky electronica. The absolute revelation of the PAN night at Feeërieen was Berlin’s M.E.S.H. James Whipple’s electronic soundscapes sound abrasive, icily industrial and hazy, but at the same time have an organic and impressionistic edge to them. Texas-bred Lotic, along with M.E.S.H, is part of the Janus collective radiating in Berlin’s scintillating underground scene. His Fallout EP is bursting with unorthodox house, while his latest EP, Heterocetera, is dark and ominous.
Britain’s GoGo Penguin present a futuristic vision of jazz with sophisticated arrangements that sound light, airy and intellectual. Previously nominated for the Mercury Prize, their upcoming album, Man Made Object, has already received the legendary Blue Note Records’ nod of approval. Belgium also has jazz legends in the making: synth-jazz man Pomrad (Adriaan Van De Velde) brings Daft Punk in Herbie Hancock style accompanied by an idiosyncratic ‘wobble’ sound. As a trio, Van De Velde & Co deliver an electro-jazz spectacle at its finest. De Beren Gieren are Fulco Ottervanger on piano, Simon Segers on drums and Lieven Van Pée on bass. Their album, One Mirrors

Festival programme Monnik This Belgian experimental one-man band explores the borders of spiritual seclusion and transforms his musical drones into almost ascetic meditations through his carefully layered shamanistic sounds. BARST Relying on a series of pedals, synthesizers, samplers, minimalistic tracks, drum computers and effects, BARST manages to create a spatial, orchestral sound and break with traditional songs structures. Daghraven Also part of Illuminine, Daghraven invites you along to the purgatory party with frightening, humming drones, scary creatures and the ominous whispering of an endless day. Dirk Serries Already part of wonderful projects like vidnaObmana, Fear Falls Burning and Microphonics, Serries has also released a number of albums on Consouling Sounds. This evening he will play a minimal ambient set in which he goes back to his vidnaObmana roots. Screening ‘De Kamerarbeiders’, Stefan Serneels Stefan Serneels is a Belgian graphic artist noted for twisted and distorted perspectives through which he displays an everyday banality, presented through the visor of his own subconscious and intuitive logic. Following a one-off performance of his theatre piece De Kamerarbeiders, Serneels decided to make a short
Joan Shelley + Broeder Dieleman 25 March - Huis 23, AB, Brussels 20.30 I Free (seats are limited) Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, Joan Shelley brings us her ’60s West Coast-infused brand of folk which puts her somewhere between Townes Van Zandt and Alela Diane. Her recently released third album, Over And Even, was recorded with Nathan Salsburg, manager of the Alan Lomax archive, who will also accompany her live. With his banjo, Broeder Dieleman moonlights as South Netherlandic equivalent of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. So it’s no accident then that he released a split 7” with his hero in early 2015. Surrealistic songs about the mystical Dutch landscape are in order. Consouling Sounds presents 26 March - Huis 23, AB, Brussels 16.00 I Free (seats are limited)

film based upon the play to make its ephemeral character more tangible. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith + Mathieu Serruys 27 March - Huis 23, AB, Brussels 20.00 I Free (seats are limited)
A mini-festival on the final evening of BRDCST: another tradition in the making! Ten years after their first performance in Belgium, Battles remain inimitable. Though the departure of guitarist Tyondai Braxton left them seeking a new identity, their unique mix of art rock and avantgarde jazz is a beast to witness live. In 2013, the seven-member Mbongwana Star arose from the ashes of Congo’s Staff Benda Bilili. Punk-electronics, Afro-futurism, hip hop, electro, soukous and afrobeat are in order for a party that never ends. The latest gem of the experimental rock scene comes from Portugal. While PAUS have only one album to their name, they’ve already made a reputation for themselves with two drums, swinging rhythms and dirty riffs that will make you sway their way. Mats Gustafson’s furious sax in Fire! is a reminder of why this trio has left such a lasting impression on those who have seen them. Fire! excels at avant-garde jazz with punk influences and a generous injection of improvisation – giving the ceremonial closing bang to BRDCST!
Composer, performer and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith grew up in the countryside of Orca Island, located in the Bay Area of Seattle right off the Canadian border. The island that she describes as ‘one of the most magical and peaceful places’ has a vibrant influence on the music she composes. With her new effort, EARS, released in a couple of days, Smith wants to take her listeners into a three-dimensional journey made out of dense swirls of organic and synthesized notes mixed with sounds of the earth. Her pioneering musical techniques promise this show to be an unforgettable, immersive listening experience.

24 March - Madame Moustache, Brussels 21.00 | €5 | Free for members Fans of Acid Baby Jesus are in for a treat with the Greek Bazooka. This psychedelic garage band consists of singer/guitarist Xanthos Papanikolaou, second guitarist Vasilis Tzelepis, drummer John Vulgaris and bass player Aris Rammos. While in their first Slovenly Records-produced album they were still mainly singing in English, the new LP expected this month, Δεμένος Στο Κρεβάτι Σου, (aka ‘Tied To Your Bed’) returns to their Mediterranean roots. Always faithfully using double guitars and double drums this can only mean double eargasms!
20 March - Vooruit, Ghent 20.30 | €7 | Free for members Since we probably have some more months of rain before us, we’re so ready to be transported to warmer and more colourful places. Closing the Africa Film Festival and accompanied by the Burkinese psychedelic Yelemani Trio, the ‘Modern Ghanaians’ from King Ayisoba might just do the trick. Preaching his way through songs like ‘Wicked Leaders’, ‘Don’t Do The Bad Thing’ and hit song ‘I Want To See You My Father’, the lead singer (with an amazing haircut, by the way) perfectly harmonises the modern with the traditional of home country Ghana. Using the typical Ghanaian two-stringed kologo this ensemble is all about percussion, melody, rap and dance moves that will make you jealous.
