The Growing Pains Issue

One of the biggest childhood deceptions, besides Santa and the Tooth Fairy, has to be adults promising milk-sipping seven-years-olds that growing pains will cease once they’re older. As it turns out, every other day is a chance to lose some and to win some, whether it means faceplanting after taking a leap of faith or having your heart kneaded like Play-Doh. It doesn’t make anybody wiser per se, but if you’re a creative soul it might inspire you to record the next stripped-down folk masterpiece. Otherwise there’s not much you can do about it, kiddo, so suck it up and remember: when life gives you lemons, make limoncello.

Misc.: Medieval Reactions While not a lot of people die from leprosy any more – and thankfully we’ve stopped using pig bladders for condoms – our pleasures and troubles remain similar to those of our medieval ancestors. Or at least, so it would seem if we are to believe the Twitter account Medieval Reacts. Details of medieval paintings are accompanied with references to daily life in the UK. Crazy parties and ‘wing manning for mates’ make regular appearances, but at times, Medieval Reacts can be philosophical and sensitive as well. Instead of reaching back to those tasteless Nineties, we can now get some life inspiration from the twisted Middle Ages.

What do we know about this mysterious music-maker? First of all, he’s from Chicago. Currently residing in Buenos Aires, though, literally having sold his laptop to enjoy the sweet life there a bit longer. What else? You might call him a certified stoner, a skater, a rebel... but Sean Cullen also makes music drenched in creepy, drippy, cosmic chill vibes. Somewhere in between oOoOO and Pictureplane, he merges hip hop with witch house, trap – and, actually, a bit of everything. So look out for this Young Ho Collective founder’s eclectic mixtapes. Our personal favourite: A Dance Tape for the People of Planet Earth.

she does with conventions. After recently weaving Meshes of Voice (2014) with compatriot Susanna, she comes back spinning ‘That Battle is Over’, annunciating her upcoming fifth album Apocalypse, Girl to be released in June on Sacred Bones Records. Tiptoeing through dissonance, majesty and prose, Jenny Hval delivers an outlandish, mind-fucking piece of art. www.facebook.com/jennyhval

Misc.: You Lazy Tourist Ever wanted to try new Belgian products, but are too lazy to go search for them? Well then, for you – and especially for all the tourists out there – You Lazy Tourist is the way to go. Order online and you’ll receive a box stuffed with local products right to your doorstep. Just lift up your lazy ass when you hear the doorbell ring. Founder Nadir Khiar explains: ‘We carefully choose what goes inside each box and keep looking for products that are typically Belgian, but that only locals actually know about.’ For now, You Lazy Tourist only delivers within Brussels, but they’re planning to expand to other cities.

Lyrics dark as the night and deep as the sea, slung with a heavy lob over moody, futuristic beats. Try to imagine how the future of UK hip hop sounds, and you know how Jesse James Solomon sounds. His productions are inspired by the sound of underground London dance music and diverge from your average hip hop beats. You can clearly hear influences from the likes of Synkro, James Blake and Mount Kimbie. Highlights are the slow and sad love song ‘Y.P.T’ and the dreamy ‘Lionel Jesse’.

We Visit You: Loïs Rijgersberg Photo by Adriaan Hauwaert

Your first ever music-related memory? We used to go to Trailerpop in Rotterdam when I was younger, and we got to throw eggs and tomatoes at people on stage. What’s your favourite pastime? Watching trippy, hypnotising animated videos. And I adore cheese. Like, what other food is yellow, right?! I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and doing nothing but just being. What does your ideal lazy Sunday look like? Me lying in bed, with pineapple juice and a coconut chocolate bar, watching Breaking Bad while my mom is making me dinner. Any guilty pleasures? Worn-down sneakers that look like shit. I love it. Have you experienced any regrets recently? I regret letting my hyacinth die, I was too lazy to feed her. What makes you dance? Moshpits at a Clockwork Indigo concert, gotta love moshpits. And Santana’s ‘Jugando’. What future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? Hinds!

Name: Loïs Rijgersberg Age: 18 Home: The Earth Zodiac sign: Virgo Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m an international event management student from Rotterdam. What projects are you working on? A lot! I’m interning at Subbacultcha Belgium at the moment. What inspires you? The sun, chakras and the human mind. Capital Steez taught me to open my third eye. What do you like best about your place? My papasan, it’s a chair that makes you disappear. Did you have any growing pains as a kid? I still do. Young DiCaprio on Growing Pains made my heart beat faster. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Clockwork Indigo, Clear Soul Forces, Jesse James, Powers Pleasant – all (t)rap, basically. And a mysterious rock song without a name that just happened to be on my phone. What’s the first record you bought? Illmatic by NAS. My mom and dad bought me a few John Lennon records before that, though.

Every month we visit a Subbacultcha member’s place. If you want us to visit you, please send an email to magazine@ subbacultcha.be

The Growing Pains Issue. Interview Has your appreciation for music changed since starting a band? My appreciation for the music industry definitely has. Man, it’s so complex! Managers definitely are some of the most important figures in the industry. We’re so lost in it, so it’s reassuring to have someone who knows about everything. Did you have a history together before forming the band? Not really. In 2012, Carlotta and I decided to get together after a guitar course that we both took. We enjoyed covering various songs. In April last year, we uploaded our first two songs to Bandcamp. The next day we were already getting some crazy attention. At the time, we’d only played two shows, which were awful. We were just two guitars and everyone in the audience was clapping to give our songs some more rhythm. So it was obvious we needed more band members. And that’s when Ade and Amber joined in. You know there’s a town and beer in Belgium with the same family name as Amber, Grimbergen? Yes! We know! When we discovered that in Paris, we screamed, ‘Oh my god, Amber! You got your own beer!’ How have your lives changed over the past year? Our lives now have nothing to do with how things used to be. Until a year ago, we were like every young adult, living in our city, some of us studying, having our group of friends, going out for drinks, going to concerts. Now all of a sudden, it’s 20 days of touring and just ten days in Madrid, which we spent working for the band. I kept studying as the band was growing, trying to find some space to catch up with classes that I missed and preparing for exams, which is really intense. So after my January exams, I decided to quit and focus 100% on the band. And it’s more like 200%. What’s the Madrid music scene like? The garage music scene is burning right now. Hinds was a good

Hinds. Continued door opener and gave more confidence to all the bands here. Now in Spain people are starting to know about this scene and what garage rock is. To name just a few, The Parrots and Los Nastys are growing a lot bigger. Actually, we have to thank these bands. We were friends with them before we started making music and because they were already active in the industry they coached us a lot. Why is there so much joy coming out of you all? We’re pretty joyful people, I guess, and being in Hinds really makes us happy. Making music has always been a dream for us. We enjoy meeting new people, partying and learning about new music, and the band allows us to really do that. How was your big US tour? It was so much fun. It was our best one so far. It seemed like you partied a lot. Yeah, but not more than in Europe. No one gets what touring is like until you start touring yourself. My mom always ask me things like, ‘Did you go see the Tour Eiffel?’ and I’m like, ‘Mom, I was in a car for five hours, then I got to the venue, did the sound check for two hours, then played the show, and then the only real free time we had was the night and at night everyone parties. So it’s not our fault.’ What’s your cure for painful hangovers? Ade needs coffee. If she doesn’t get her coffee, she’s a monster. Then you can’t talk with Amber, she’s listening to music with her headphones in. Carlotta and I just spend the whole car ride talking about the night before while playing stupid games.

Véronique Vincent & Aksak Maboul by Gabriela González

After a 30-year hiatus, 2014 saw the release of Ex-Futur Album, the mythical third LP by Aksak Maboul, conceived by Marc Hollander with Honeymoon Killers vocalist Véronique Vincent. This gem was written and recorded at the beginning of the Eighties, but, sadly, left unfinished and untouched afterwards. Now, this melodic avant-garde electro pop feels ever so contemporary, leading the way to a floating, almost transcendent, dreamlike world. For the exclusive live shows, Vincent and Hollander will be joined by Faustine Hollander and Amatorski boys Sebastiaan Van den Branden and Christophe Claeys 21

Always been curious about the music scene in other cities outside your own little cocoon? We assumed you were! So we feed your hunger for insights and secrets in the Scene Report. Julie Bathellier, head of communications at the Parisian agency Super – which organises the upcoming Heartbeats Festival together with L’Aeronef, Le Grand Mix and De Kreun – takes you on a tour through the dreamy capital of la douce France There are thousands of Paris city guides, so many things to see and so many options to hang out that it gets difficult sometimes to choose the right place. If you want to take in all the culture, the right food’s important. So let’s start there. Like a true Parisian, you go for Japanese. Rue Sainte-Anne is the popular place to be, but I’d recommend Sapporo on the Rue Saint Honoré, serving the best ramen, not far from Le Louvre, La Comédie Française and L’Opéra. It’s cheap and good food in a very chic district. If you’d prefer to try some bristronomique food – basically, a mix between bistro fare and gastronomic cuisine – stop by Hai Kai. The female chef prepares a different menu every day, using fresh ingredients to create really well-executed, revisited French food. And it’s just next to Canal Saint Martin, so very romantic as well, with the boats passing by. In the afternoon, Le Bal is a very nice place to take a break, near Place de Clichy. The place is dedicated to visual images, with exhibitions, events and a library. It’s in a dead-end street, so even on a sunny day it’s very relaxed. As you’re clearly fond of good tunes given the publication you’re

Scene Report: Paris. Continued ‘The music scene in Paris is very intense, with lots of shows every night’ holding, you shouldn’t miss out on the record stores. Stop by Ground Zero and National 7. Both are independent record stores where you literally can find thousands of treasures. National 7 even has a selection of vintage furniture. At Les Balades Sonores the people are very nice and helpful. With their label they’re promoting fresh French and Parisian bands and they organise showcases in the tiny shop as well. Afterwards, go to Les Petits Gros on the same street, a typically French, old-fashioned bar, for an apéro with fromage and charcuterie, a beer or a wine, and some good friends. The vibrant 11th arrondissement is a good district for drinks as well. Around metro Parmentier there’s Le Complot, a bar where they have a great selection of rums. Near Bastille and Voltaire there’s L’incognito, which is at first glance a liquor, cheese and charcuterie market, but at the same time an original bar. Don’t miss out on Le Motel, a tiny bar for a beer or cocktail that’s not too expensive. It’s a really fun place, with DJs and exhibitions by local artists. And every Sunday there’s the Quizz when you can win a bottle of champagne. The music scene in Paris is very intense, with lots of shows every night. I work for Super, an agency that represents and organises shows for more than 300 international artists. A lot of them are promising bands, some don’t even have an LP; some aren’t even being played on the radio. Over the years we see them evolve and become famous. Movement, this modern electronic R&B band from Australia, is one of them. Their show at Pitchfork Paris enthralled the audience, who were all dancing and smiling. We also work with Tobias Jesso Jr,

The Growing Pains Issue. Scene Report who is said to be the new John Lennon. At the office we like singing out loud ‘How could you baaaaabe?’ And then there’s Badbadnotgood, who I discovered live at Point Ephémère, a famous small venue next to Canal de l’Ourcq. There they gave an outstanding performance somewhere between hip hop and jazz. Apart from that, Super also produces the Fireworks Festival, a showcase for artists on the rise, Pitchfork Music Festival Paris, and now Heartbeats festival, an indie festival on the border between France and Belgium. If you want to experience a fun concert out on the Parisian streets, you can head to Le Trabendo, with its great sound system. In the ’90s it was a famous jazz venue, then it became a pop-rock joint. It’s quite big and you can walk from the pit to the bar easily, then go drink your signature cocktail on the terrace facing the newly built Philharmonie de Paris. The fact that it’s not in the very centre of the city makes for a very engaged crowd that knows it will have a great time, thanks to the carefully curated programming. Near Bastille, you can head over to Le Badaboum. Formerly it was called La Scène Bastille and it was a bit neglected. It reopened a year ago and it’s a nice venue to discover some new bands. It’s also a club where you can hang out from Thursday till Sunday. They have a delicious cocktail bar, a classy and very good alternative to the chaos of the well-known Rue de Lappe, which is just touristy, with outrageous prices and bad music. If you prefer a place in between a venue and a bar, Le Pop Up Du Label is a good option. A small venue newly opened not far from Gare de Lyon, it’s a bar and restaurant at the same time. There’s a tiny stage where you can discover the US and UK scene in an underground ambience. So, see you there!

Books Text and artwork by Gabriela González

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris I like bitchy people. I enjoy their whining, especially when it's over something trivial, compounding the gravity of the matter through neurotic, solipsistic analyses. I also like smartasses – at least on paper; I’m a child of Seinfeld, after all. David Sedaris is a good example of a bitchy smartass who mercifully got a platform to exploit the details of his life as a misfit and spin them into comedic gold. And I say ‘mercifully’ because his career as a performance artist would've been odious at best (think speed-fuelled acts involving pineapples and sock monkeys). Me Talk Pretty One Day is a collection of vignettes from Sedaris’s life, such as his speech-therapy lessons and his highly relatable (for me, at least) experience as an immigrant in France. Family anecdotes are ripe, and they’re all the better consider-

ing the potluck of characters he was stuck growing up with: a nerd father and sassy mom, a gaggle of wary sisters and a brother nicknamed The Rooster, who treats his father’s aching feet with endearing advice, such as,‘Bitch, you need to have them ugly-ass bunions shaved down… But you can’t do shit about it tonight, so lighten up, motherfucker.’ As obnoxious as he may seem, Sedaris has a knack for evoking the ordinary in the absurd and vice versa. And while some of the stories are a bit far-flung (did his cat really go on hunger strike after chipping his tooth on an aborted art project?), Me Talk Pretty is a great reminder of the embarrassing minutiae of childhood, and how adulthood is only an excuse to continue bitching about it all.

Figures of Dissent: Jean Rouch Petit à petit (1970)

‘In charge of research for the Musée de l’Homme’ reads the visiting card of the French filmmaker Jean Rouch, who is the subject of this month’s Figures of Dissent evening at KASK Cinema in Ghent. The evening revolves around the screening of Petit à petit, a semi-improvised ‘ethno-fiction’ about a group of young men running an import-export business in the city of Naimey in Niger. They travel to Paris to study the high-rise architecture and to observe how Parisians make use of it. In imitation of the ‘ethnography’ carried out by white anthropologists in their home country, they make their own study of Parisians and their lifestyle – measuring their bodies and skulls with calipers, making observations of their clothing and manners, their diet and their cars. Rouch once said that ‘cinema is a wonderful tool to approach people, cultures, societies, on the condition that it is at the service of the liberty of thinking and acting.’ One of his, rather famous, fellow filmmakers once said that Rouch hadn’t stolen the title on his visiting card, and added: ‘Is there a better definition for a filmmaker?’ Screening at KASK Cinema, Ghent on 21 May, 20.00.

42

Films Abbas Kiarostami Close-Up (1990)

‘Exactly half my life was spent in the dark. […] I spent money to buy tickets. […] I spent my time. And psychologically speaking, I sold my soul to cinema. So that’s how I spent the best hours of my childhood... in the dark.’ These are the words of Sabzian, the main character of Close-Up and after whom our website, www.sabzian.be, is named. Close-Up is an ode to cinema and to life. Based upon a peculiar news story director Kiarostami stumbled upon, the film follows an unemployed youth from Teheran called Hossein Sabzian who out of love for cinema convinces an entire family that he is the celebrated filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Using the very people involved, Kiarostami re-enacts these events, placing his re-staging in opposition to the images of Sabzian’s trial for fraud. A continuously shifting dialectic ensues: how does cinema relate to our lives? What is real? Is every fiction necessarily a lie? Screening at Cinema Zuid, Antwerp on 21 May, 20.00.

A subtle, tender and sensitive tale of self-discovery and romance for art-house lovers, that unfolds like an episode from another century. Canadian director Maxime Giroux has won several international prizes.

ly repeated, to mercilessly expose an arbitrary system that attempts to silence any critical voice. As Ai Weiwei is China’s most renowned artist, his critical voice is more often than not silenced. On charges of tax evasion, he was put behind bars for months and after a show trial lasting one day, he was ordered to pay a heavy fine. Reason enough for filmmaker Manu Riche to reconstruct this trial, turning it into a documentary project.

sour and gravely, like PJ Harvey, this guitar-drums duo will make your mood match their blues-rock inspired tracks. With Eight Houses, Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant have created exquisite, heartfelt songs. The promising homegrown band Faces On TV provides its well-organised chaos.

Véronique Vincent was, during her time as the singer of Honeymoon Killers, the first Belgian ever to grace the cover of NME. She and Marc Hollander, the founder of the cult band Aksak Maboul, have written and worked together for the past few decades. It has taken them over 30 years to finish their untouched album, Ex-Futur Album. Now as it gets positive international feedback, having been labelled as modern, you can now take this opportunity to see them play live again.

Loads of different artists, three areas, three different atmospheres and all that in one night. With this Opening Night Owls party, your opening night of Les Nuits couldn’t be more unforgettable. Count on Gazelle Twin to release all of her demons at once, combining sickly shuddering beats and synths with a whole lot of distortion, gasping and breathing. Also on the bill: Sagat, Clark, Helena Hauff, Blanck Mass, the side project of Benjamin John Power, otherwise known as half of Fuck Buttons, and much more!

Together with Margaret Hermant (A Winged Victory for the Sullen) on harp and violin and John Also Bennett, Brussels-based composer Christina Vantzou will enchant you with a wonderful piece. Count on the MP4 Quartet to perform Different Trains by Steve Reich. And Dolphins into the Future is nothing less than a real-life Gauguin story, taking you on a musical trip to the islands of Hawaii and the Azores.

Film: Anger and Beyond - Argos

Hinds (fka Deers) + Joe Speedboat

Inspired by the work of Kenneth Anger, whose subjective and singular position as an artist generated a very rich and diverse body of work, Brussels centre for art and media Argos curated a special programme of like-minded artists. Their works show their fascination for the occult, the surreal and the erotic – typical Anger themes – in their own fascinating ways.

With a wave of innocence and audacity, Madrid band Hinds revive an invigorating surf rock which perfectly intertwines with their ’60s-like vocal sonorities. Characterised by a don’t-give-a-damn attitude and a propensity to make fiesta their motto, the female quartet brings the heat on stage with a perfectly controlled nonchalance.

13 May - Botanique, Brussels 20.00 | €16 | Free for members

Between 1973 and 1991, minimalist composer and filmmaker Phill Niblock roamed the world, shooting all kinds of repetitive work done by human hands. In The Movement of People Working, this poetic evocation of labour is accompanied by drone-like music. Whereas the slowly revolving soundscapes have a strong physical impact, the action on the screen seems to become more and more of an existential non-movement. A powerful pact is sealed between our senses

LA-based Wands’ long-awaited, second psyche-garage-rock LP Golem makes for some damn fine heavy riffs and stoned melodies. Count on one-man band Jessica93 to perform dark and hypnotising rhythms. His voice creates the sound of a lonely man, wandering in the darkest streets of Paris. Cheeky, charming, touchingly direct and infectiously warm songs: it’s what makes Melbourne foursome Twerps international pop champions.
