intro

Sunburned Like the white markings left by pressing fingers on red skin, summer blazes its way through our habitually pasty bearings and just as quickly ditches us with either a golden glow or a scorched back to remember it by. So no time to waste, because options abound: festivals in the city and in the middle of nowhere, rad kids connecting over pastis on the Ghent docks, sights to see, braincells to simultaneously enhance and ruin. Before you know it, you’ll be back to the old grind. So ignore the jetlag and ditch the lotion — let the sunburn define you this time around. 5

GAIKA

This Brixton-born underground artist makes a mix of dancehall, R&B, grime and hip hop with the ferocity of a robot and the dark aestheticism of artists like Mykki Blanco, with whom he collaborated last year. He’s a fan of FKA Twigs, Tricky and the Melvins, and generates music equally unfit for definition. 7 Jul – Cinema Zuid, Antwerp 20.00 – €5 – free for members

Iceage frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s solo-to-full-band-project Marching Church is a reincarnation of the early Birthday Party infused with the kitsch of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Last Shadow Puppets.

A documentary about the life of Danny Fields, who’s played a major role in 20th-century music since the Sixties. A Harvard Law School dropout, Fields went on to work with The Doors, Cream, Lou Reed and acted

25 Jul – Cinematek, Brussels 21.00 – €6 – free for members Often named rock’n’roll’s own Zapruder film, this portrait centred on the ill-fated Rolling Stones Altamont Free Concert 1969 captures the debauchery that put a shocking footnote to the post-Woodstock summer of love vibrations. Tracing the steps of Lou Ottens, the inventor of the cassette, Zack Taylor and Georg Petzold’s documentary traces the medium’s role in the democratisation of music and the way sound has been conceived and recorded ever since. Dutch artists Villevoye and Dietvorst make videos that explicitly distance themselves from the purposeful aspect of documentaries. Evidence is their first major solo exhibition featuring ‘Evidence and Showcase’, a double projection that consists of scenes from existing movies and new fragments. The fragments are shown in no particular order and without narrative or causality, to create a feeling of instantaneousness. The projection focuses on two major themes: the memory of World War I and the encounter with the Asmat people in the Papua province of Indonesia.

Marthe Wéry

until 23 Jul – BPS22, Charleroi 11.00-18.00 – €6 – free for members Belgian painter Marthe Wéry (19302005) was famous for her geometric, monochrome works that test the strength of light and of colour. Today the ‘carolo’ museum BPS22 — which, by the way, basically stands for the location of the building — holds the largest collection of works, documents and research by the artist. So come to bâtiment provincial (boulevard) Solvay (numéro) 22 to discover some of her most famous paintings as well as some previously unseen ones.

A Temporary Futures Institute

The Still Point of the Turning World — Between Film and Photography

1 Jul-31 Aug – M HKA, Antwerp 11.00-18.00 – €10 – free for members While crystallomancy, palmistry and I Ching divination are funny diversions, nobody is able to predict the future with complete certainty. But imagining possible, probable and desirable futures is a clear way to a better understanding of the past and the present. In this spirit, M HKA brings together futurists and artists to reflect critically on what lies ahead of our times and abandon anachronistic visions of the future. Curated by Anders Kruger and Dr Maya Van Leemput, the exhibition combines visual displays and artworks by, among others, Michel Auder, Agence Future and Stuart Candy.

1 Jul – 30 Sep – FOMU, Antwerp 11.00-18.00 – €8 – free for members from 1 July until 30 September ‘Photography is truth. And cinema is truth twenty-four times a second.’ There’s no second guessing which of the two artistic media Jean-Luc Godard preferred when he uttered this aphorism, but what he certainly didn’t want is to place a wall between photography and cinema. Neither do the filmmakers and shutterbugs included in this exhibition. Hiroshi Sugimoto, Jeff Wall, Jason Dee and Mekhitar Garabedian show that beauty can be found on the dividing line between the still and the moving image.

YO — Brussels Hip-Hop Generations

Manufactories of Caring Space-Time

1-31 Aug – Bozar, Brussels 11.00-18.00 – €10 – free for members

1-27 Aug – MSK, Ghent 09.30-17.30 – €8 – free for members MSK presents the culmination of two years of their collaboration with the 49 Nord 6 Est FRAC Lorraine in Metz and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona. From 2015 to 2017, three artist collectives investigated the possibilities of collective and more sustainable art practices. Working with broken objects and neglected sources of knowledge, they tried to stir up depleted economic models and art circuits. The final exhibition presents the work of Patricia Esquivias, Grace Ndiritu, Oriol Vilanova, Slinkachu and Manoeuvre alongside their conclusions.

Brace yourselves, hip-hop lovers. BOZAR has cooked up a summer exhibition paying tribute to 35 years of hip-hop culture in Brussels, from its origins and evolution to its current scene. Divided into four central pillars of hiphop culture — rap music, breakdance, graffiti and DJ-ing — the exhibition features a handful of archives, including photos, videos projections, original documents, but also graffiti workshops, artist talks and dance battles. Thanks to the help of youth clubs and neighbourhood centres in the event organisation, an ‘urban programme’ is emerging all around Brussels, so expect more of that good stuff to come.

GAIKA Two self-released mixtapes and one EP on Warp have made GAIKA one of the most exciting prospects in modern electronic and pop music. His solo work stands out because of its daring emotionality, sound design and mix of registers. He is an outspoken interviewee who, just as his music, likes shifting where normal is or is supposed to be. An interview about influences and artistic perspectives.

Interview by Rafael Severi / Dj Sensu Photos by Guillaume Blondiau shot in London, UK 19

Your music is often defined as dealing with issues of race and masculinity. I find it often transcends those things. I do not really fit into a box so people that interview me ask me about identity politics and I then say how I feel the world is today, not how I feel the world should be or how I want the world to be. I try to make art that is utopian or ideal, but my philosophy is not caught up in identity politics. I make my music to be transcendent to those things, but in doing so it then means I have to have a conversation about them. In

interviews they then ask me about race and masculinity. Of course I have a political opinion, but that is not all I have to say. Is there a science fiction influence on your work? I think I make music that is a reflection of my reality. I am not a science fiction nerd. My dad was a scientist so I am more interested in science fact. I do dream of tomorrow. My work is kind of based in a speculative world, but that does not mean science fiction. Most of my music is made on analogue equipment and on real world

20

There is something very unashamedly romantic about your music. My music is unashamedly romantic and that is because I am. With my music I try to represent who I am and what I do. I am out in the world. I have my loves and losses, we all do. And what about grunge having an influence on you? I only try and make stuff that takes me back to that pure feeling of being young with everything being new and incredibly intense, as if I am trying to recreate the feeling I have

instruments when it comes to percussion for example. I do not have the newest plug-ins. I do a lot with my voice which I then manipulate into textures just to give it humanness. What I am not into is that really perfect pop music sound. To me that is science fiction and it terrifies me. It is about frequencies that are supposed to have an effect on your body but that do not actually mean anything. Given that I use quite old school equipment, the fact that I often get asked about science fiction I find quite ironic.

21

‘My music is unashamedly romantic and that is because I am’ when watching this movie about my life, about my prepubescent and teenage years. Sometimes some of those influences come out. It is definitely there. I do not necessarily know where it comes from.

doing a show. I want to engage with people, stimulate them and make a point. An artist functions as society’s conscience. If not it would be simple self-indulgence, which is something many mainstream artists of today do. I want to do stuff that is musically interesting with lyrics that matter. I do not know if I have been successful but that is my aim.

Do you remember the very first music having an impact on you? That would have been Berlin with ‘Take My Breath Away’ from the movie Top Gun. Or Roxette with ‘It Must Have Been Love’. I have been pretty much making that record over and over again. [Laughs] Shabba Ranks with ‘Ting-ALing’ was also one of those first pieces of music that impacted me. Those are the things I grew up with, the things my parents listened to or that people would play at family parties. When you are a small kid and you watch Top Gun, you have no idea whether the music is cool or not. It just has a big emotional impact. Overblown rock ballads and the beginning of dancehall, those are things I remember. There is more to GAIKA than just the music. For me there has to be more than putting a record out and then

Kedr Livanskiy

There are some artists out there that easily fit into a specific mould. Be it hair-metal, powwow step or Muzak, everyone’s got a genre they like to call home. Which is why when an artist like Kedr Livanskiy comes along, all bets are off. Combining her love of pop, electronic and the avant-garde, Kedr swirls her influences together, creating an idiosyncratic sound that would be impossible to duplicate. Her EP January Sun shows a musician that is traveling on an artistic trajectory, one that allows her to explore herself and to express her personality to the world. We sat down with the Russian musician, to look back at some of her past, and discuss what the future holds for the ever-growing Lebanese cedar.

Interview by Alexandre Ermakov

28

Photos by Sasha Mademuaselle shot in Moscow, Russia

29

When did you first start playing music? When I was 17, me and a friend formed a sludge metal group. I played drums. Then when I was 18 or 19, I assembled a poppunk group that played in Russian. We even released an album, our band was called Hesburger. What made you transition from punk to more electronic-based music? I mostly listened to punk during my teenage years and at one point I realized it was sort of the only thing I was listening

to. And so I began to sort of see the limitations of the genre. Film school changed my perception of what music can be. Whilst studying, I learned that film is essentially built through editing. I started to relate this idea back to music — that music is made through editing, particularly electronic music. I began to see a completely different approach to making music. Are there any similarities between Kedr Livanskiy and your earlier bands? I was a completely different person back then, my aims were different. With Kedr, it’s a much more personal thing; where it’s just me and my music, and me trying to understand myself through my music. For your most recent music videos (e.g. Otvechai Za Slova (Keep Your Word)), did you film them yourself or did you work with someone else? Me and my friend filmed the latest music videos. We didn’t really approach it with a screenplay or with a concrete plan, and sort of approached shooting it in a documentary style. Now I feel like I want to create something with a story, with continuity, something much more structured. But I enjoy both styles equally, and I want to

30

‘It’s sort of like you’re floating in this ocean and you slowly start to find the melody and the movement’ mix them up. The locations are mostly places near where I live or ones I see when I’m travelling. If I see something that speaks to me, I make a note of it and when it comes time to shoot a video, I think back to that place and head over there with a camera. What is your recording process like? I like to start to just jam out and look for musical patterns or specific synth sounds. It’s sort of like you’re floating in this ocean and you slowly start to find the melody and the movement. You start to realize that this pattern speaks to you. Once I get a feel for the song, and what it’s going to be about, I start to add vocals. It’s hard writing lyrics. It’s easy to do a text that’s just a phrase, like six words on a loop. Most of my older songs are like that. With my newer material, I’ve started to approach the vocals in a more structured format. It’s been challenging, causing a bit of a block. I don’t want my words to interfere with the rest of the song, I want it to fit phonetically.

Do you find that you’re influenced by things outside of music when writing your songs? Yeah, I find that visual art and movies tend to influence me. I find that you can find influence in a multitude of different things. But also in terms of music, I find that my influences tend to change. I’ve currently gone off ‘90s electronic music and started exploring ‘80s music. Recently, I’ve particularly been getting into a lot of Russian groups, like NII Kosmetiki. Are you considering a switch from electronic music to something else? I don’t really think in terms of genres. I don’t want to be labeled as “Techno Kedr” or anything like that… and like to keep people guessing. I’m making what I like in the moment, and what works for me.

Blanck Mass The beats are brutal, noisy and hypnotizing on World Eater, the latest effort of Benjamin John Power with his project Blanck Mass. Yet, Benjamin, also one half of Drone band Fuck Buttons, balances it with soundscapes of serenity, making this record your best bet if you have a curiosity for electronic noise music but want to start it off chill. A love for theatre is something that needs to grow, mature, be nurtured. Theatre has an ancient feel to it, it reminds us of Romans, of Shakespeare or, in some cases, it transports us into the future; the highly experimental performances we encounter on some small stage in a hidden place. Love at First Sight is the second edition of a festival created from a never-ending love affair with the art of theatre making. This year they will present five premieres created by young upcoming theatre makers guided in their process by a temporary alliance of Belgium’s greatest: Arenberg, De Studio, d e t h e a t e r m a k e r, Monty, Troubleyn/Jan Fabre, Zuidpool and Toneelhuis.

Talitha De Decker

When Talitha went to first grade she was searching for a hobby. It was only when she went to see her cousin perform at the local dance school that she found her passion. Talitha fell in love with bodily movements, its nuances and possibilities, and hasn’t stopped dancing ever since. She says dance is like communicating, believes movement isn’t just about virtuosity, and finds complexity in the pure and simple without forgetting that which we tend to crave most: laughter. Alongside Troubleyn/Jan Fabre, Talitha will premiere Tinkling, an interpretation of the likewise named traditional Philippine folk dance.

37

Moreno Perna XYX is Moreno’s second piece as a professional theatre maker. It is a play on gender, seen as a cultural contract we can break away from in order to find a much more fluid essence; something spiritual, non-defined, or in other words, human. Working in nightlife and for cabaret shows, he got in contact with the audience in a totally different way than he could in a theatre. It is also why he loves to mix different body knowledges; from contemporary dance to vogue, from ballet to pole dance, from physical theatre to fetish practices. Because we shouldn’t forget how important it is to be entertaining and not only conceptual in theatre.

Kuiperskaai Together with Victor Lauwers, Romy Louise Lauwers and Oscar van der Put, Lisaboa Houbrechts founded the theatre company Kuiperskaai, an artist collective of performers, musicians, visual artists and writers. They used to live, work and perform in the exact same space, sleeping in tents while rehearsing and organising expositions. From there, they burst open into everything they are today. For their play,1905 words will form the basis for a physical interpretation of a story about moderation, extremism, and a mystery that pervades a zeitgeist

38

39

Kuiperskaai

Reynout & Bartel

Last year Reynout Dekimpe and Bartel Jespers made a play every three weeks. It taught them to trust their intuition and imagination. Their love for theatre sprouts from a co-experienced rhythm, the co-construction of a world, the reciprocative play between audience and actor. How a theme, for approximately one hour, comes to life. In De Spits van de Koude Oorlog, they will bring a play on the conceit of a Russian society that existed not so long ago, a land they didn’t know much about, but in which they found more familiar than they expected. Just for a brief moment.

For their upcoming play Pygmalion, Eva Binon, Jason Dousselaere and Louise Van den Eede reflected on man as a creator, and ended up with the concept of the creating theatre spectator. With an aesthetic drenched in abstract enthusiasm, they aim to liberate our imagination. They told us theatre is fleeting; it is magical and coherent, creating a temporary sense of another time and space, away from the ordinary. Compagnie Frieda doesn’t feel very different from the theatre makers before them; they try to be as free from tradition as can possibly be, while simultaneously knowing it is impossible. The nonsense of their premise has a mouth and it smiles.

recent finds DOUR

Between 12 and 16 July, the town of Dour will once more see its horizons expanded in the most melodious way. And this year’s Dour festival looks to be a pilgrimage worth undertaking, with headliners like M.I.A, NAS, Die Antwoord, Earl Sweatshirt and too many trailblazers to name in one breath. Besides perennial favourites like Alex Cameron and Blanck Mass as well as local sweethearts Robbing Millions, Zwangere Guy and Roméo Elvis, we here at Subba have more ideas about which acts you absolutely cannot miss this year. Our picks: hip hop collective Le 77 with their soulful, vibrant vibes; British producer Powell laying out his electro-rock sound experiments; young glam-rock prodigies The Lemon Twigs who may well be living in the wrong decade; Berlin-based Palms Trax with his heavy Detroit-/Chicago-infused brand of house; and Wastelands ’15 alum Rejjie Snow bringing it all the way home with his melancholic, chill-inducing flow. In short: see you there!

facebook.com/1STEVERDIEP.EURO2000

Because it’s important to follow those you support: one of our 20-somethings, Sam Gunst, is all set up with his graphic design project/ publishing label 1STE VERDIEP. This creative studio materialises Gunst’s oleaginous aesthetics into the form of art books, posters and sleeve designs with and for established contemporaries like the Social Harmony crew and KERM records. Disproportionate typeface, car mechanics and found images interact in sleek compositions, defining Gunst’s specific approach amongst the new generation of underground graphic designers. Keep an eye out for Other Galaxies, the latest machination to come out of this first floor multiverse.

Brussels Starterpacks instagram.com/bxl_starterpacks

Is it a visual guide for new arrivals in the Belgian capital, or perhaps a pictorial encyclopedia of all the elements that make Brussels Brussels? Whatever the case, the images found on Brussels Starterpacks are instantly recognisable and perhaps even relatable for anyone who’s ever spent enough time in this strange little city. Entire scenes are reduced to four vignettes and a caption, and the results are as hilarious as they are spot on. A turtleneck, a bike, sneakers and the Supra Bailly are the ‘I’m a design student at the ERG’ starter pack, and a lot of us would blush upon realising the Arthoe De Brussel had us in mind. You’d have to be from here to get it, or you’d have to make the move and get a starter pack of your own.

recent finds Vincente Minnelli at Cinematek, Brussels

by Sabzian

Sabzian is a collection of online reflections on cinema, and maps cinephile events in Belgium and its surroundings. Articles are written in Dutch, English and French.  sabzian.be

At the foot of the stairs, a woman pulls a mirror out of her stuffed bunny purse and decides to apply a bit more make-up. It’s all quite banal. Why is it, then, that the viewer feels a tug at his heartstrings? It’s because this woman performs the gesture as if her entire life depended on this missing make-up. Of course, she puts too much on. And it is in fact her life that she’s staking when she walks up the stairs to ask if the English teacher is or is not her rival. It’s enough to see the joy illuminate her face when she hears the haughty teacher reply, with ice-cold irony, that she has nothing to worry about on that front. Where could she have learned that words say something other than what they’re saying and that the ornaments you use to make you attractive are also indicators of your class? Jacques Rancière wrote these lines on Some Came Running (Vincente Minnelli, 1958) at the occasion of our second anniversary in 2015. Read the whole text in three languages at Sabzian.be ‘Almost all of Minnelli’s films are versions of Cinderella. Two situations: a false one and a real one, that has to appear as real life. The world is very deceitful — after all, what is, isn’t necessarily real! Minnelli tells us that the world and our consciousness undergo metamorphoses, his films are stories of initiation. There is a before and an after: what is given and what is dreamt, what is dull versus what is fulfilling, reality and art. One can think of numerous terms for this polarity — Minnelli used them all. But he is less a filmmaker of dreams, fantasy or art, than one of metamorphosis. From walking to dancing, from the filled and stable film frame to the choreography of crane movements, from tranquil nature to the wind, from indifference to an acknowledging “you!”, from reality to the enchanting spectacle.’ (Dirk Lauwaert in 1987)

recent finds Abyss X

by Hannes Rooms

soundcloud.com/abyssxxx

Versatile composer and performer Abyss X draws inspiration from gothic, new wave and industrial to create a surprisingly harmonic sound hovering between noise and ambient. The duality in her work is reflected in compositions that either attract or repel, while antic vocals balance the scales. During her confrontational live acts this dichotomy becomes even clearer. It’s performance art fuelled by aggression and energy that ultimately channels a threat of doom and despair altered with soothing and aerial vocal interludes in a contemporary take on how the lament could possibly sound and be played in ancient Crete, her homeland. To get the full picture of her musical persona, check out her live show or go listen to her nomad radio show SHAME on NTS, BCR, Hong Kong Community Radio and more. In the past she’s released on Halycon Veil, Extasis Records and Infinite Machine.

A.Chal soundcloud.com/achal

What makes us appreciate one piece of music more than other? There’s probably no right or wrong answer to this question, but we’re convinced evoking emotion differentiates songs according to our personal preferences. Following this premise genres become subordinate and therefore man’s wide-ranging and eclectic taste can be justified. In the light of this idea we’re convinced A.Chal’s music relates to that of Abyss X, but in a fashion that is generally considered more accessible. Ever since Alejandro Salazar uploaded his first track, ‘Round Whippin’, on YouTube we’ve been curious to see if his other songs could live up to the expectations. He employs his impressive vocals together with an intelligent use of Atlanta trap beats to shape his own kind of R&B. His Peruvian origins and LA residence weigh heavily on the vibe of his music, ideal for consumption in the summer months. The mainstream potential of A.Chal’s work is undeniable, so it’s only a matter of time before you’ll see him peak in the charts. With the recent release of sophomore album ON GAZ, this may happen quite soon.

until 30 Jul Gouvernement, Ghent free entrance gouvernement.be

Vive la fête! During the Gentse Feesten when the city is on the brink of insanity, art space Gouvernement will celebrate the ‘Homo Festivus’ with an orgiastic art festival. As true Masters of Ceremony, 20 artists from varied disciplines — including Bert Jacobs, Charlotte Adigéry & Nicole Twister, Joris Van de Moortel and Pieter Ampe — will invite you to surrender yourselves to their musical, performative and visual reflections on celebration, transcendence and rituals. Like the smell of sweat and poor beer that rises from the Vlasmarkt days after the Ghentian saturnalia, Gouvernement will exhibit the physical traces of these artistic interventions as one big ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ from 27 until 30 July.

MORE MUSIC BOX until 24 Sep Frans Masereel Centre, Kasterlee free entrance fransmasereelcentrum.be

‘9 artists, 9 songs, 9 posters, 1 box and Martin Kippenberger.’ Sounds like the beginning of a really bad joke. Instead, it’s the tagline of More Music Box, an expo curated by MOREpublishers, a Brussels-based publishing platform. As a reaction to the overproduction of their own practice and in homage to ‘Schon Wieder 1 Kippenberger 5X’ (a tube containing five posters of Martin Kippenberger’s work), MOREpublishers developed a collection box that functions both as an exhibition and as an object. The box consists of nine posters created by nine artists (including Jakup Auce, Sophie Nys and Leen Voet) who were invited to work around a chosen music track. Frans Masereel Centre offers you a one-time opportunity to catch a glimpse of the whole series.

we visit you

Tell us, what do you do in life? Loads of good stuff, people and concerts are everything, and casual drinking too. Oh, and I work as a lobbyist. What projects are you working on? Finding a girlfriend, and then mainly just floating along and writing some stories that will be done when I’m sixty. What inspires you? Intelligent people and the stuff they express, say, study, write, sing, act or dance out. What do you like best about your place? My seven bikes that I like to fix, cooking in the kitchen and my part-time roommate, a journo from Lille.

Name: Jeppe Bo Rasmussen Age: 31 Zodiac sign: Virgo Instagram: @jeppebor Subbacultcha member since: November 2016

What’s your favourite pastime? Travelling, I guess, and sailing and dancing. Any guilty pleasures? Loads, yes, lately I’ve had a bit of make-up on which is apparently still viewed as rather unusual and weird. Have you experienced any regrets recently? Not getting my anchor tattoo when I was 20, way too late now. Any plans for the summer? I’m going to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan for some weeks with the coolest person I know.

Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? What kind of music are you listening to at The Fortune Collective Festival looks the moment? great! Perfume Genius in AB Club recently was intense so that’s still on. Slowdive’s resurrection is appreciated, Cigarettes After Sex is just a brilliant name, Drugdealer was the best Subbathing for me so far. The Danes from Gents will rule the world soon. Check them out. What’s the first record you bought? Not really a record but the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction, bought it while wearing my brother’s oversized Guns N’ Roses tee.
