This month First and foremost: it is now a known fact that 16% of the Dutch voting population are racist, xenophobic illiterates. Kind of a rude awakening for those of us who have been part of the Subbacultcha! Hippie Hipster community (see page 26). But there is also good news. The summer is here and you’ll be happy to know that you’ll have two months to read this magazine, for we won’t be back until September. In the meantime we’ll be down at the EXIT festival in Novi Sad, doing some gardening in Amsterdam and making some noise in France. But we leave you good things. We give you Deerhoof, Sonic Youth, Marnie Stern and loads more. New music: NAMEDROPPING

S

ummer is here. The wait was long, but now the wait is over. In music land this means mucho festivals and minimal releases. This is the time when bands and booking agents make the big bucks they so eagerly crave. All in the name of entertainment. Luckily there’s a whole bunch of Subbacultcha! favorites roaming the old world during the festival season, bringing their noisy entertainment to those in search of pleasure. To kick start your festival season, head out to Metropolis in Rotterdam (Europe’s new capital of intolerance) to see The Soft Pack (Good thing they are no longer called The Muslims), The XX, Golden Silvers and Fucked Up. Mid July you’ll be confronted with a tough decision, since 5 Days off, Valkhoff Affaire & Dour are all in the same week. But choices are what the free world is all about, so take your pick: Dour has on offer: Fuck Buttons, The Dodos, Sleepy Sun, O’Death, Caribou and Animal Collective, 5 Days Off gets you going with Crytsal Castles, Thunderheist and a whole bunch of art & electronics, keeping it real down in the ol’ Amsterdam. faire in Nijmegen is FREE, which is a major pro and with bands like Deerhoof, Lucky Dragons, The Strange Boys, Mahjongg and Bishop Allen you can’t go wrong! Mid August comes the time to head out to Germany, where HEALTH will play the Haldern festival, along with Loney, Dear & Blk Jks. At the end of August Pukkelpop is happening in Hasselt, Belgium, with appearances from Gang Gang Dance, Micachu & The Shapes, Telepathe, HEALTH & My Bloody Valentine. Seeing all those bands at Pukkelpop will also save you a trip to Lowlands, cause Lowlands has Brussels sprouts written all over it. That’s just fine, if Brussels sprouts are your thing, but personally, I think you’re better of downloading porn on the couch. In terms of releases, you can take it easy this summer, indulge in the records you acquired in spring. Don’t forget to download the new albums by Future of the left (22/06), Oneida (07/07), Bowerbirds (07/07) and Nurses (04/08) before you pack up your camping gear. None of these records will change your life, but they are good records and will saturate your craving till the next tsunami

With downloading gone rampant, a proper indie band make their money on the road, living from hotel room to minivan to backstage, but generally wouldn’t have it any other way. Deerhoof are that band. Constantly surprised by the amount of Deerhoof fans around the globe, drummer Greg Saunier talks to Subbacultcha about playing in communist countries, bootlegged t-shirts and a peppercorn banned in all 50 states of the US. eerhoof seem to be on the road a lot. Is being in a band your reason for travelling or is travelling your reason for being in a band? I’ve never had the travel bug personally. I know Satomi always has. But either way travelling with a band is not really the same thing as travelling for pleasure. We don’t usually have time for sightseeing etc. The part of a city that we always see is the inside of some rock club, and actually these places are not especially

different from one another across the globe. But then again we have an excuse to meet people that the average sightseer doesn’t have. People come to our concerts and they like to talk to us. So in a way our travel experience is much richer. What is always in your carry-on luggage? We always try to carry on guitars but we get dirty looks from the attendants a lot. They aren’t really carry-on size. continue 13

What’s the band’s preferred mode of transport; minivan, tour bus, hitchhiking, private jet, Trans Am? Well, there is our preferred mode and then there is our usual mode. Preferred mode would be either train, or maybe driving, but taking all side roads and small roads. The rare times we can do this are such beautiful scenic experiences. We are able to take the train sometimes in Japan. And driving from Poland one time we had no choice because the only road was a small road. It was snowing and the countryside and little towns we passed through were stunning. But usually we are 14

in a rented minivan, and we need to take the main motorways in order to arrive on time. You recently played the Strawberry Festival in China and you saw a girl advertising “Bootleg Deerhoof T-shirts”. Did you introduce yourselves? Of course. She was very nice actually. She was a big fan of the band so that was quite a surprise -- we didn’t know if anyone knew our music there. At the same time, she didn’t actually apologise for the shirts. But she did give us some. One design was of Milk Man, one of our albums, so we got one of those for the origi-

nal artist who made that image—we knew he would think it was funny. At the festival, you said the Chinese audience seemed new to rock music and they had not yet found their niche as fans , was such naïve openness refreshing? I think actually it would be condescending to put it that way. I’m not sure if there is any advantage to finding one’s niche. That just means that there is more that you don’t like. More potential for unhappiness, don’t you think? Maybe us over-specialised over-hip subgenre defenders are actually the naïve ones.

Tell me about how Chinese food is different to ‘Chinese Food’ in America. In the US, the Chinese food I’ve had all tastes pretty similar. Like, if each person in the band orders a different item from the menu, we could still get away with combining them all. You’d hardly notice. Because basically you either get the “brown sauce” or the “white sauce”. For all I know those sauces exist in some region of the enormous country that is China. But I didn’t find anything like that in Beijing. We were treated to a lot of dishes and there is no way you would combine any of them, they tasted so utterly different from each continue 15

venue feeds you at every show. Here in France we are treated to the most amazing multi-course meals. All the staff and bands eat together and everyone says “Bon appetit”. other. And wow, some seriously spicy food. There was this particular peppercorn that apparently was banned from being imported into the US until recently. I don’t remember ever having anything like it. It sort of makes your tongue feel like it is disintegrating. Will you eat anything on tour? Are you confident to immerse yourself and eat what the locals eat? Well, we’re impossible because we’ve got one vegan, two vegetarians and one omnivore. But I always love coming to Europe. (I am writing to you from France.) Here, the 16

You also just played Moscow and St Petersburg. You mention on your blog you wanted to go via the Trans Siberian Railway, will you return to that some time? Oh, that would be an adventure. Trouble was it only left twice a week from St Petersburg to Beijing, and the trip was a week long. It didn’t leave on the right day for us to be able to make it. What surprised you about Russia? That it was real. I always feel that way going to new place that I’ve always heard about. How were the crowds there - any different from a normal Deerhoof crowd? No such thing as a normal Deerhoof

preconceptions destroyed over and over. It is possible for people to live and organise themselves in all kinds of ways that the American media doesn’t want you to know about. In some countries they actually don’t want any impoverished class. Or they give themselves health care. Or they don’t allow themselves to carry guns. The fact that we are welcomed is of course a shock, partly because I never expect anyone so far away to know anything about our obscure band. I’m so thankful for the welcome that we get. But I can never figure out if it’s a sign of some great universality of our music or just the Americanisation of the entire globe. What does ‘home’ mean to you? I was going to say hotel room but actually the place that feels like home to me the most is the stage. Can you record on the road or get much time to write? I suppose you could record while touring but we usually take our time and record ourselves, so it’s not practical to do that during the rush18 end

ing around of touring. As for writing, I would guess that every member of the band would give you a different answer. We all write our music in totally different ways. Like John writes on guitar a lot and I hear him noodling around backstage all the time so he might be writing. For me, I often feel like my songs write me rather than the other way around. Ideas just come to me, and they can come whether I’m on tour or not. I just keep my pencil and paper within reach. I have to say though that I don’t tend to get as many good ideas on tour. I think it is because the music floating around in my head is just a lot of Deerhoof songs that we are playing every day. They sort of cancel out something new. Have you got any Paulo Coelhoor Paul Theroux-styled travelinspired words of wisdom? Who’s that? Deerhoof is playing at the Dour Festival in Belgium (16-19 July, www.dourfestival.be). And during the Klub Radar weekend in Tivoli, Utrecht (18, 19 July)

Fact Check: Sonic Youth

- The eternal

verf rollen.

Godver. Was ‘t nou eendekut of eendenkut? Of paardelul!

“I’m coming out of my cage.” Johan in Artis?

Subbacultcha! shows in JUly and august

Disasteradio

10 July. De Nieuwe Anita, 20.00, €6 Songwriter Luke Rowell, from Wellington, New Zealand, has been pushing his Disasteradio 8-bit solo project for a decade already - pretty much ever since the internet allowed him to freely distribute music digitally. Melody-friendly electro pop is the simple formula he’s striving for, but throw in a fascination with retro computer games, retro hardware and retro software, and you end up with charming results. Influences include Sparks, Kraftwerk, Devo, Pere Ubu, Ariel Pink and Add N To (X).

Marnie Stern

15 July, Studio 80, 22:00, €6 After cancelling some dates of her tour in May (including her Subbacultcha! show on the 22nd) Marnie Stern is back. All fresh and exciting. And we’re glad. There’s not a single review of Marnie Stern in the whole wide internet that doesn’t have the word ‘shred’ in it. Or ‘tap’. Usually both Sleater-Kinney and Van Halen are mentioned, too. And also, the words ‘female guitarist’. She is widely hailed as one of the best of the latter - and sometimes that’s even leaving out the ‘female’. Do women shred differently than men, one wonders? Marnie, for one, doesn’t really care. She just shreds. (And shrieks, and rocks.) And does so pretty 44

fantastic. This night is put on together with Katapult. Dance Dance Dance!

Oneida

15 August, EKKO, 20:00, €9 Their love of cheap organs and droning repetition draws comparisons with Amsterdam’s own zZz at times. But this Brooklyn quartet have created a fairly experimental back catalogue over the past 12 years, blending Krautrock, indie and psych sounds. Some albums have been more accessible than others, their live shows are traditionally dangerously loud, and this summer they’re releasing the second CD of their Thank Your Parents triptych.

Telepathe

21 August, De Nieuwe Anita, Amsterdam. 20.00, €6 After Telepathe’s amazing show at the Subbacultcha! magazine party in May, we are very excited to host them again! This time at our ‘cutting edge and yet super gezellig’ home-base De Nieuwe Anita. Telepathe are from Brooklyn, they sing, and they used to be in guitar bands. (They also have good clothes and elaborate hair.) But despite the guitars (and the hair), they’re actually pretty much all about the beat. Many, many layers of beat with bass

Agenda

and drums and synths, and then, on top, come the vocals that are lovely ‘n’ cool. The beat is way more important to them than the guitar ever was - or so it sounds. And it sounds good. Then they say ‘I’ll fuck

it up, you ought to know,’, and we really, really don’t want to believe them. If that doesn’t sell it to you, Mr Hipster, TV on the Radio guitarist Dave Sitek produced their debut album Dance Mother. end 45

Hot 8 Brass Band 8 July. Paradiso, 22.30, €14 The Mars Volta will be in the main hall, attempting to breakdown the space-time continuum faster than CERN, but upstairs it’s all about good-time party sounds with a brass twist. This New Orleans group found fame after Hurricane Katrina, but they’re no novelty act. Mixing up jazz, funk and hiphop with cool covers, they’re as hot as the name proclaims. If in need of another like-minded brass fix, Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble can be found at Raw Rhythm Festival (1 August).

11 july. Paradiso, 19:00, €7 School’s out for summer, but there is a lesson or two (or eight to be exact) being

taught in rock and roll at Paradiso. Garage rock legends Oblivians and The Gories will rock out. Expect Texan hard rockers White Denim and funked up rockin’ beats by Brooklyn’s !!! pronounced (Chk Chk Chk). Drive Like Maria who have bagged support slots for ACDC and ZZ Top; will rock you. Also rolling out will be The Night Marchers, The Wooden Constructions and E.T. Explore Me. For those about to RAWK, we salute you.

Master Musicians of Bukkake 15 July. OCCII, 21.00, €7 There’s a full-on freak alert in place for this night. This loose Seattle collective formed back in 2003 and have been exploring alternative plains of music and reality ever since. It’s percussive, psy-

Things to do in AMSTERDAM chedelic, fuzzy and features members of Sunn O))), Earth, Grails and Secret Chiefs 3, so there is some actual pedigree to it.

Howlin’ Rain / Tweak Bird 22 July. Paradiso, 20.00, €8 Big riffs, big voices and big fuzz is the Howlin’ Rain formula. This Californian sextet is fronted by Ethan Miller, known from Comets on Fire. Where this newer project differs is that Howlin’ Rain aren’t afraid to show some humour, melody and roar through songs in a traditionally bluesy and soulful range. Following in the psychedelic trail is Tweak Bird, who’re harder, rawer and more experimental – not so far from Comets on Fire actually.

Pluk de Nacht 7-16 August. Het Stenen Hoofd. 19-23 August. Studio K, Films start at dawn (between 21:30 and 22:00), Free The great open air film festival is a must this summer. When the sun goes down, grab a friend and a beer, wrap yourself in a blanket and sink into a beach chair to watch a great selection of films. Besides the main programme, with films like ‘The Squid and the Whale’ and Harmony Korine’s ‘Mister Lonely’, there will be a variety of side treats such as the video archives of artist Constant Dullaart, the music video collection of James Houston and much more. On Wednesday 13 Au-

gust there will be a special programme dedicated to music and film. Make no mistake... go!

Oneida 14 August. Paradiso, 22.00, €7 See page 45.

Blitzen Trapper 17 August. Paradiso, 21.30, €10 Portland’s fuzzy indie folk from the Sub Pop world. They’re still mainly plugging last year’s surprise hit, Furr, and that’s fair enough as it’s good fun. But they’re also quietly working away on its follow-up, so expect a few of those new tunes to overspill into the live circuit this summer.

Vetiver / Beach House 18 August. Paradiso, 20.00, €10 American indie folk. Vetiver’s tender and lulling music has been prolific these past few years, but that’s often overshadowed by the presence or at least the desire to see occasional collaborator Devendra Banhart. That’s less likely these days, and they really don’t need him anyway. Then there’s Beach House, who may well steal the show tonight. This dream pop duo from Maryland conjure memories of Mazzy Star, Cocteau Twins and (somehow) Neil Young. It’s unassuming lo-fi really, but some cracking melodies emerge from their hazily produced cocoons, just perfect for a lazy summer evening. end 51

Things to do in ROTTERDAM This is a selection of shows in Rotterdam that we think are worth a visit. So get out there and indulge.

Metropolis Festival Sunday 5 July. Zuiderpark, free This year’s Metropolis Festival is providing another eclectic mix from all corners of the music scene. It’s somewhat forbidden to miss Fucked Up, the long-time, ear-shredding Toronto based heroes of the noise-punk scene. If it’s clappy cowbell happy indie dance pop you want, check out Golden Silvers from the UK, or The Asteroids Galaxy Tour from Denmark. Dreamy prog-rock comes courtesy of Portugal. The Man (from Sarah Palin’s hometown of Wasilla, Alaska), and Edinburgh’s Broken Records will provide for any hankering for maritime folk, ringing bells for those into The Pogues and Beirut. Many more acts are sharing three stages too, on what will hopefully be a beautiful July day in the park. Plus, it’s free, so you have no excuses.

Secret Chiefs 3 Thursday 9 July. Worm, 21.30, €12 If Ennio Morricone had grown up with the Beach Boys and was a Baghdad goth, he might have sounded a little like Secret Chiefs 3. This is some trippy shit: an alchemic mix of sitar-heavy psychrock, noisy goth-metal, lurid soundscapes, epic drumming, and a bunch of

oh-man-I-dunno-what. If you still require a certificate of weirdness, the project is driven by Trey Spruance, formerly of Mr Bungle and Faith No More.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Wednesday 5 August. Rotown, 21.00, €10 The Pains of Being Pure at Heart may not be set on breaking new barriers and changing the musical spectrum, but these kids are one of the most exciting breakthroughs of 2009. Mastering a palette of happy yet melancholic tunes, reminiscent of twee pop, shoegaze and new wave, they’re coloring inside the lines but still manage to get terrific songs out of it. Hit, don’t miss.

The Mummers Thursday 27 August. Rotown, 21.00, €9 There’s nothing not to love about Raissa Khan-Panni’s voice. Drop the surrounding violins, cello, double bass, trombone, French horn, flute, drums and keyboards, and it still sounds like it’s coming from a clear glass bubble outside of our space and time. She might be Björk’s secret sister, or she might just be a geniune jaw-dropping act. Go see it to believe it. end 53
