A letter from the wild things Dear visitor, Welcome to the third edition of our bungalow festival Where The Wild Things Are. We look towards a weekend full of quality music in a beautiful bungalow park, with the comfort of your own bed, bathroom and fireplace. Taking full advantage of the location, the grounds of Center Parcs De Eemhof serve as a place of fun and relaxation for a weekend getaway with friends, music, good food, swimming and other activities. On the following pages you’ll find a complete guide to the festival, including – if we do say so ourselves – this year’s jawdropping music programme, the special afterhours programme, interviews, a timetable and map, festival tips and cures for the morning after. In addition to our music programme, pay heed to little gems like the film programme in the Action Factory Cinema, Lucy’s Wijsje – a musical exploration through the woods of De Eemhof – and several daily activities in the Saffraan. Ever played Rummikub against a world champ? Now’s your chance. We also love a flexible audience so head to the swimming pool on Saturday morning for yoga with Maxim Hartman and Tim den Besten. Upon arrival, start planning your weekend and don’t forget to open the fridge for a little surprise. Stock up on supplies at the supermarket or frequent the Market Square and Food court if you don’t feel like cooking. Please have the time of your life and treat your bungalow like it was your favourite aunt’s. Thank you for being here. Enjoy! WTWTA team

Hi-Fi Klubben
Pub Quiz
Scandinavian audio gurus Hi-Fi Klubben are here to prove to you what you’ve known for years but stubbornly refused to admit: those weary headphones and blown-out laptop speakers that sound like someone’s hissing in your ear are impeding your ability to truly experience the music you love. Setting up shop in Bungalow 124, they’ve invited a few of each festival day’s acts to preview their latest efforts on a sound system fit for kings. They’ll even stick around for a vital parental scolding of a lesson you should have learnt long ago: ‘Bad sound kills good music.’
This is not your typical garden-themed variety show. The Pointy Hats are back, and you’ve been challenged to a night of Kinky Kabouter Kwis, which is code for ‘we’re in the woods, base humour is permitted’. But enough gnome humour, this is a serious pub quiz and it requires a serious sign-up at the festival desk. So if you’re up for quickfire questions on a wide range of obscure topics, swing by the festival desk upon arrival to register your team (up to five members).

Lucy’s Wijsje
Looking for a way to walk off that Friday night hangover? Rather than wander aimlessly through Center Parcs, better join Lucy’s Wijsje. This guided walk will take you to six special places that are to remain hidden from sight to the rest of the mortals and revealed to you and only you. In each spot you will encounter a band playing an intimate set, a performance or an art exhibit. It’ll be like hanging out with fairies.
Remember the good old days? Before mobile phones, tablets and endless wifi? The days you’d huddle around a table with all of your friends to play a wholesome round of Rummikub? Well they’re back, and then some. Challenge your bungalow mates to a brain-straining game of hungover Rummikub, and once they’ve all thrown in the towel, join Saturday’s Where The Wild Things Are Rummikub tournament in the Saffraan or take on Dutch National Rummikub champion Peter Mentzij.

Jungle. Continued Tom McFarland and Josh Lloyd-Watson’s sound is much like their studio moniker: an organic ecosystem filled with wild organisms, unexpected pathways and the dominant rhythm of nature. As Jungle, the London duo produces a funk-laden pop sound, infused by tropes of soul and synthesized biology. We called Tom to talk about tapping into the fountain of youth, his ambitions as a veterinarian and getting older Hey Tom! As you probably know, Where the Wild Things Are is a famous children’s book… Yes, indeed. It was actually one of my favourites as a kid. Really? Did you ever have wild fantasies like the young protagonist in the book? Definitely. I imagined I was a deep-sea diver. I’d sit in the park for, like, five hours, making up this underwater world where I’d have to find a treasure. It’s still really important for me to connect with that inner child, and feel the freedom of imagination again. What did you want to be when you were growing up? According to my parents, I changed my mind every five minutes. One day it was an astronaut; the next day it was a fireman. I even went through a stage in which I wanted to be a vet. I don’t really know why, I think I just found animals adorable or something [Laughs].

Jungle. Continued ‘When I’m on stage, I forget that everything hurts. I fall into some kind of childish euphoria’ Why did you give up on those dreams? Music came on very early. As a 14-year-old kid, I understood how important this aspect of my life was. I would literally walk to school everyday, instead of cycling, just so that I’d have time to listen to an album on my Walkman. And then at school I’d still listen to music, during class, during lunchtime. Always. You met Josh when you were nine. How did the two of you spend time together? We used to get in quite a lot of fights [Laughs]. We grew up in this busy neighbourhood so we had to claim our territory from the other kids. Back then we used to get on the bus and go to this big park in central London, where a lot of roller-skaters would congregate. We got a lot of bruises from hanging out there. You were little troublemakers! Well, yeah, as a kid you try to stretch the rules as far as possible. When you get older, you have to abide by this set of rules that society expects you to follow. How much of that youth is left in you? I think a lot! There are bits of my body that feel old, like my knees. I used to play a lot of sports when I was younger, so they aren’t in very good condition any more. When I’m on stage, I forget that everything hurts. I fall into some kind of childish euphoria. Everything still feels new, and that’s nice because when you’re getting older, it’s easy to get in the whole ‘been Jungle play the Willem Ruis Tent at 19.25 there, done that’ kind of stuff. on Sunday, 08 March

ecstatic praise. It’s no stretch to say he’s accustomed to scrutiny, and so we delved into tough topics like his new album, Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper, choosing rap names and nipple exposure 27
Panda Bear. Continued First off, what does the Grim Reaper represent to you? Change, sacrifice, relinquishment? At least in terms of the songs, it’s hard to say; it’s like a concept record in that way. It’s not like every song addresses that subject, but insofar as he does connect to stuff that’s being talked about in songs, it’s always in terms of change, and how a big change can often mean something dying. I didn’t want it to be overly dark, which is why the album title, I feel, sort of sets it up for being kinda cartoony and sort of playful, which I liked… but I never meant it literally as, like, death. So it’s not as morbid as it seems. I never meant to suggest that I was gonna die. Apparently 9th Wonder is a pretty significant influence on your new record, and certain tracks definitely have a hip-hoppy feel to them – rhythmically, especially. What is it that draws you to hip hop? I like hip hop straight up. But there are particular producers who’ve used samples in ways that are sort of magical to me. But also, the spirit of the music I respond to, there’s a kind of toughness that I like a lot. Sometimes there’s sort of a more laid-back vibe to it, which I also really dig. Rhythmically, it’s something I tried to steer clear of for a really long time, which is part of what we talked about earlier with the Grim Reaper and feeling like something had died. So let’s say we’re in some alternate universe and Animal Collective is a rap group. What would your rap name be? I’d just go with Panda Bear. It’s so infuriating to middle-aged dudes… like, they just hate it so much. It’s so delicious. They just think it’s so lame that a grown man labels himself ‘Panda Bear’. I find it’s a good douchebag repellant. You’ve been playing live for years now. Do you still have to deal with on-stage nerves? Fuck, yeah. The solo stuff is a thousand times worse than the

Panda Bear. Continued ‘I never meant to suggest that I was gonna die’ band stuff. It’s like jumping off a diving board or ripping off a BandAid, you just have to not think about it. And once I shuffle out there it’s like, [groans] ‘I guess I have to do this again.’ Yeah, it’s tough, man. I don’t feel like I was really born to do it. Yet here you are. You seem like a fairly even-tempered guy… is there anything that makes you angry? I’m not the kind of person to get angry too often, but if you push me beyond a certain threshold then I just totally freak out. A lot of times, like in competitive sports, I’ll get real hyped up. Competition definitely brings it out in me. Beyond that, physical altercations will do it. If I see a member of my family get attacked in any way I’ll get pretty pissed off. Have you ever had to deal with fans overstepping their boundaries? People are pretty cool, people don’t get too weird. Sometimes it’s a little odd, but I appreciate that people are just really excited… I don’t really feel like it’s me that they’re attached to, it’s more the music and this idea of whoever made the music, so I try not to really think about it too hard. But yeah, no one’s done anything really weird… I’ve signed a nipple or two, dudes’ nipples. Being alive, you’re gonna be exposed to nipples sooner or later. It’s true. I mean, the likelihood of being near a nipple really early in your life is very high. Yeah, so I hear. Panda Bear plays the Action Factory at 20.30 on Sunday, 08 March.

Radio Noet Noet by Florian Braakman
Versed in all manner of African song, the four selectors that make up Den Haag’s Radio Noet Noet have quickly risen to become one of Holland’s liveliest flocks. Their soaring sets take you on a frenzied flight to the far reaches of the African continent. From Nigerian disco-funk and Angolan kuduro to South African deep house and psychedelic Saharan blues, they leave no stone unturned. And we haven’t even covered the exotic dress they pick up along the way. We sent local wildlife photographer Florian Brackman over to their PIP nest to capture the Noet Noet brood grooming their vibrant plumage ahead of one of their famed shows 33

zZz. Continued How would you describe your musical taste? Björn: Diverse. I’m into jazz, kraut, disco, stoner, electro; everything you can imagine. Daan: I’m also very much into classical music. Björn: Oh yeah, me too. But I think Daan is more into it than me. I also like punk and garage. Daan: Don’t forget psychedelic music from the Sixties. Björn: Also Can. Daan: And Miles Davis. Björn: Mad Professor, The Jesus and Mary Chain. Daan: Aphex Twin. Jeez. Is there anything you don’t like? Björn: Everything they play at ‘Vrienden van Amstel’. Daan: I’m not into all those subgenres of metal. Björn: Except for Slayer. Daan: I’ve had times when I saw a good metal band play at a festival, but that’s something I mostly enjoy in that particular moment. I wouldn’t play that at home. When you listen to something new, and you’re not immediately blown away, do you make an effort to appreciate it? Björn: I have the feeling that Daan is someone who will give something like that some time. I’m usually pretty quick to decide if I think something is amazing or not. Daan: I’m more of an album freak. If an album has got one good song, and the rest is not that spectacular, I’m not really inclined to listen to it – or the album, for that matter. Can you give me an example of an album that you can listen to without skipping a single song? Daan: I love classics like The Velvet Underground or Selected Ambient Works by Aphex Twin.

zZz. Continued Björn: For me that would be Bitches Brew by Miles Davis What kind of music did you hear when you were growing up? What did your parents listen to? Björn: My dad listened to The Shadows and The Spotnicks a lot. You know, that kind of instrumental guitar music. Daan: I grew up with a lot of classical music and jazz. Were you able to appreciate those styles as a youngster? I mean, jazz and classical aren’t exactly the easiest genres to get into. Daan: Oh yes, I loved it. And I continued listening to it. My parents were into popular classical music, Mozart and stuff like that. But when I was around 12 years old I had already advanced, and I was in the attic listening to Mahler symphonies. My parents didn’t really like that as much, though. If you could steal a song and present it as your own, and no one would ever find out, which song would that be? Daan: That’s a tough one. Give us a moment... Björn: Yeah, let me look at my playlist real quick. Daan: Uhhhhhhhhhhm… That one song by The Flaming Lips? Björn: The Cure, maybe? They have some good songs. Nah, there’s just too many I can think of. Brian Eno? Daan: Wait... Björn: Oh yeah! We’ve got it: ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie. Daan: Yeah, we’re in agreement here. What was the last song you heard that completely blew your mind? Björn: Can I do this one? The last thing I heard that blew my mind was by Dirty Beaches. Especially ‘Horses’ and ‘Sweet 17’. That’s probably the last thing I heard that made me go wild. Björn, I hear you’re also a chef. What’s up with that? Björn: Well, not really. I really love to cook, though. I ran into the guys that run the restaurant BAK, and they’re fans of our band. I

They said: ‘Well, why don’t you drop by?’ So I did a six-month internship in their restaurant, and now I work there as a chef from time to time. Just to practice my skills in the kitchen. I really like cooking and eating. And wine. Is there a link between cooking and making music? Like, when you record songs, do you follow a recipe? Björn: No, not really. That just comes into existence through working with Daan. But the things that are on our new record were sort of made in the kitchen. It’s a nice eight-course meal, so to speak. With a huge dessert. But being in the kitchen, like with those guys from BAK, is really a rock’n’roll thing to me. Almost as rock’n’roll as making music. The only thing it can’t beat is playing live; that’s still the coolest thing there is.

Have you ever played in a weirder environment than a bungalow park? Let me think… Mostly we play rock clubs, but there are some unusual places. Your music is pretty wild and upbeat. What usually goes on backstage after a show? Crazy partying, you know, with groupies, I think – I can’t remember mostly. I’m just joking. We’re pretty tame actually. No groupies. And before? We act like crazy animals and jump around a lot. That’s the ritual; holding hands and jumping in the air. We need that to have the energy onstage. The video for ‘Hot and Cold’ shows you on a date with rock’n’roll wildcat Ian Svevonius. What makes you hot in the real world? [Laughs] That depends! That song’s about someone that you try to figure out, figure out what that person is thinking – which is confusing sometimes. The music isn’t that confusing. It’s fun to play songs that put people in a good mood. Did Ian pass on some of his wisdom? Ian is our old buddy, he’s been my friend since I was a teenager because we both grew up in Washington DC. I played in Chain & the Gang for a while – our bass player still does, and my boyfriend plays drums, so we’re all pretty connected to him. He’s got a really unique view on things. That’s why we turned to him when we needed a band name. We showed him our list of ideas and he immediately picked Ex Hex. It sounded great when he said it. And we trusted his judgment. Any expectations for your European tour? We’ve never played in Europe with Ex Hex before, so we’re pretty excited to hop on that plane. I hope there are a lot of wild animals to meet. It’s definitely gonna be a girls’ night out kinda thing for us. We have a lot of fun together. Ex Hex play the Desparados stage at 18.45 on Saturday, 07 March.

Meatbodies With a pseudonym like Meatbodies, you’d expect Chad Ubovich to be a huge meat lover. In truth, he only eats animals on special occasions, and lets his vegan girlfriend do most of the cooking. This month’s recipe was actually conceived by his girlfriend, but he does make it from time to time. Chad is pretty conscious about his shopping, but he’s not a picky eater. We called him to chat about food, and since it was his birthday a day earlier, we were dying to know what he had for his celebratory meal.
was called ‘Jump in the Fryer’, a play on ‘Jump in the Fire’. It was a cheeseburger and on top of that was fried chicken, and instead of the hamburger buns, there were waffles. It was ridiculous. Have you ever eaten so much you felt sick? This one time we were in Philadelphia, and that city is famous for cheese-steak sandwiches. I used to live there for a tiny bit, so I had my favourite cheese steak place and a favourite pizza place. Before the show, I showed the band what cheese steaks were.We played a show and got drunk, followed by another cheese steak. After that, I took them my favourite pizza place. By the end of the night I was sweating in the back of the van and desperately wanting to go to bed.
Hi Chad. Happy birthday! Did you have a good birthday meal? Oh, I had so much to eat last night. We went to a hamburger place called Grill ’Em All, which is a play on the Metallica album Kill ’Em All. They specialise in really big cheeseburgers and weird stuff. All the food is named after people in the metal world. So for instance, they had a burger named the Dee Snider. Music programme Friday, 06 March Afterpartees A reckless abandon and wild-eyed enthusiasm gives the self-styled ‘bleeding heart powerpop’ of this Dutch five-piece a certain edge and vitality. There’s plenty of energy on show, but it’s charming and scruffy as opposed to angry, a ray of sunshine amid black jeans and cracked leather jackets.
Benjamin Booker Appropriately enough for an album recorded at a place called The Bomb Shelter, Booker’s garage rock has an explosive, unpredictable quality that is by turns raw, passionate and furious. There’s an illustrious lineage being distilled here, but he manages to keep everything the right side of fresh and interesting.
Allah-Las Extensive experience working at LA’s colossal and revered Amoeba Music store informed the keen pop sensibilities of this Californian surf-rock band. Treble-heavy guitars, simple harmonies and softly bustling beats recall the mid-Sixties’ British Invasion, and the era before garage rock discovered acid and went full-on psychedelic.
Bombay Don’t let that moniker put you off. Linda and Mathias can whip up the kind of storm that launched the careers of various acclaimed double acts – specifically the Stripes and the Keys. But it’s not all raw fury; a keen pop sensibility and an ear for killer melodies lend their music a softer, more accessible quality.

Music programme. 06 March Friday Dekmantel Soundsystem Famed for their MC Theater weekenders – and recent excursions to Het Twiske and the Amsterdamse Bos – Dekmantel founders Thomas Martojo, Casper Tielrooij and Jan van Kampen have forged their own electronic fiefdom in a measly eight years. Bearing crates of the finest house, techno and disco treasures, these Three Kings of Amsterdam nightlife now set out to conquer the green pasture.
Krill Its no secret: home to the most prestigious tertiary schooling, Boston is a Mecca for intellect. The sheer volume of it appears to have even rubbed off on the locals. Take Krill, for example, a brainy Bean Town trio whose snarky wit, off-kilter deliveries and quirky indie rock make even the most mundane songs feel like ground-breaking discoveries.
dEUS The cult band other cult bands love to namecheck, dEUS have done it all over a roller coaster 20-year career. Blending twisted pop, skeletal blues and crashing art-rock – sometimes all in the same song – they thoroughly deserve their status as one of alternative music’s most inventive, imaginative bands.
Magnus Ten years after their debut, Magnus – CJ Bolland and Tom Barman – are back with a new LP, a slow-burn collection of retro-futurism that swings from sultry, late-night dance tracks to glistening, Euro-pop stomps. With a new live band in tow, their show promises to be a full-blown spectacular. Maribou State Proving that producers don’t have to create with the dancefloor in mind, Maribou State deal in down-tempo, late-night jams. More chillout than chillwave, their soulful tracks are more suited to come-downs than

Music programme. 06 March Friday St. Paul Host of the Pop-O-Matic nights at Tivoli, Paul Nederveen has risen to the status of St. Paul through his unwavering love of all music genres and absolute devotion to vinyl. He’s playing the Desperados stage at an ungodly hour; go get blessed in the river of pop, soul, indie, hip hop, and electronica.
freak-outs, the sort of gently atmospheric beats that are perfect for a 3am walk through deserted city streets. Oscar and the Wolf While most modern electro-pop favours four-to-the-floor conformity and a brightly polished sheen, Oscar and the Wolf dance in the opposite direction. Woozy and dream-like, their songs unfurl at their own, languid pace and gently worm their way into your brain, all the while remaining just as potent as the best dancefloor fillers. Palace Soft, melancholic indie is the name of the game for London four-piece Palace, but there’s a sweet undercurrent to their music that stops it from falling on the wrong side of maudlin. Letting their songs gently caress your ears is like dozing off in the late afternoon sun – a pleasure that’s all too rare.

Music programme Saturday, 07 March Akwasi A member of the Zwart Licht collective, Dutch rapper Akwasi’s distinctive spoken-word/rap stylings sit neatly on top of piano-heavy tracks that recall early Nineties era hip hop. Daar Ergens, a tribute album to Bram Vermeulen, is a good place to start for those unfamiliar with his stylish, eloquent verse.
because I’ve taken the leftovers of everything I’ve encountered – gospel, soul, R&B – and put it together’. In his hands, that’s quite the combination.
Death From Above 1979 Like a Phoenix rising from the flames, the rock’n’roll juggernaut that is Jesse & Sebastian has returned for another round with more gargantuan riffs and pounding, blitzkrieg drums. The Physical World may be leaner and tauter, but they’ve lost none of the muscular brawn that their most thrilling tracks had in spades.
All We Are Built around lethargic, snaking bass lines, there’s more than a hint of funk about this multinational trio’s music, but their cheerfully high-pitched harmonies hark back to pop’s Golden age – the ‘Bee Gees on diazepam’, according to their Twitter. Their unique blend of musical heritages lies at the heart of what makes them so interesting, and the songs so catchy.
Disco Dolly Soundsystem In just over a year, Disco Dolly has accomplished the unthinkable: erased all memory of Amsterdam’s trashiest hovel, whitewashing it with their own brand of week-long party. Now a weekday home to many of Amsterdam’s finest selectors, the Disco Dolly boys are out to prove some of that’s rubbed off when they bring their sound system to the Saffraan on Saturday.
Curtis Harding The rich, easy tones of Curtis Harding wrap themselves around your ears like plush velvet, a soothing, comforting drawl that’s the perfect complement to what he calls ‘sloppin’-soul,

Music programme. 07 March Saturday Ex Hex Few bands manage to sound so assured, and so complete, after little over 12 months together, but then Ex Hex are not like any other band. Penning fast and furious garage-rock songs tinged with a keen pop sensibility, they have a vitality that burns the ears and jolts the limbs.
Gallowstreet Brass Band Bringing the New Orleans vibe to Zeewolde are Gallowstreet, whose ethos is if you can blow it, you can play it. Giving hip hop, house, and traditional-jazz covers the Brass Band treatment, this good-time party collective is sure to put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Ganz Holland’s answer to the electronic bass scene birthed by Rustie, Hudson Mohawke and Flume, GANZ has already broken through the proverbial glass ceiling. Riding a wave of euphoric, synth-driven crescendos, abrupt breaks and smooth R&B, GANZ’s acclaimed flips and debut EP have garnered him praise the world over. Now heading out on his first ever US tour in March, GANZ graces us with one final performance before he embarks on his American dream.
Fink There’s such warmth in Fin Greenall’s softly-spoken acoustica that it’s hard to believe he comes from a DJ background. Crafting sweet, contemplative arrangements on guitar, strings and drums that occasionally swirl off into chaos, the best approach is to let the loveliness wash over you and sink right in.
Jameszoo Jameszoo is the unofficial local master of idiosyncratic DJ sets. His love of avant-garde jazz and leftfield music is only equalled by his joie de vivre. But expect no cheap thrills: this is a man with a vision and it’s no mistake that he can hit that sweet spot any time he wants.
Full Crate x Mar (DJ set) No festival is complete without at least one serious bout of romance. Here to mediate are Amsterdam duo Full Crate x Mar, whose recent musical marriage has set alight all solo aspirations, and their soulful rhythm and house. Gone are the blues, relieved of their melancholy by a deep-seated sense of euphoria, itself awash with sensual vocals and future beats.

Music programme. 07 March Saturday Lola Colt Transpose Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy to the modern world, and Lola Colt would provide the soundtrack. Moody, noir rock that’s been baked under the desert sun, the razor-sharp riffs and rivers of reverb suck you into its dark heart and coil around your brain, never to let you leave.
men. Notoriously stubborn and unruly, their brash and brawny post-punk can dish out a beating. Saint Motel Saint Motel couldn’t be from anywhere other than California - the state’s laid-back vibe and easy-golucky charm is baked into every jaunty guitar line and pointed lyric. Imagine if Morrissey had grown up in Venice Beach and gone surfing every morning, and you’re halfway to capturing the essence of this band’s magic.
Meatbodies Chad Ubovitch, bassist in Fuzz and Mikal Cronin’s touring guitarist, has stepped up to the mic and into the spotlight. And boy, can he shred. Ripping through loud, kinetic, two-minute blasts of garage rock, he’s also not afraid to indulge his psychedelic side, occasionally slowing things down to a sweet, acoustic strum.
Saux Fully devoted to soulful sounds and sultry voices, DJ and producer Saux could easily be mistaken for a smooth operator given his flair for swift transitions from underground pop to tropical music, from soul to electronic. Guaranteed to put you in a flirtatious state of mind.
Rats on Rafts Reared in the bastion of Dutch bluecollar swagger that is Rotterdam, it should come as no surprise that Rats on Rafts take their cues from Brit specialists and red-brick legends The Stone Roses and Echo & the Bunny-

Dubbed ‘organ rock’, their searing assault of frenzied dance punk and mind-melting krautrock will thrash all of your vitals when they take to the Subbacultcha stage deep into the Saturday night.
The Black Tambourines 'Youth is wasted on the young' definitely doesn’t apply to the snarling, fizzing mess that lies underneath the beach-punk of this fresh-faced trio. Loud and raw, the way all youthful endeavours should be, the relentless guitars and ragged grooves channel the endless possibilities of seaside living. Tourist The best music takes you places; close your eyes and William Phillips will whisk you off to a tropical terrace, cocktail in hand, just as evening turns to night. The driving pulse and sundrenched melodies of his euphoric, Balearic-house are masterfully crafted and offer a tantalising glimpse of paradise.

Music programme Sunday, 08 March Elias Mazian Once upon a time, a young Elias Mazian belonged to Amersfort collective Barre Tijden, revealed a soft spot for hip hop and soul and dreamt of one day playing Trouw. Flash forward, Mazian has exceeded his own expectations and then some. Emerging as a staple at Amsterdam’s hallowed ground in its final stretch, the house DJ/producer dazzled as Resident of the Month in August and soared with his Voyage Direct debut. If there’s one newbie that’ll close this fest to a standing ovation, its Mazian.
roque-pop is obviously in thrall to the late Sixties. But by infusing his music with a jaunty, fanciful air and clever little flourishes, Gardner crafts special songs that refuse lazy comparisons and excite on their own terms.
Jungle A slick re-fashioning of early 1980s UK soul saw Jungle anointed as one of last year’s hottest bands, and listening to their debut album it’s easy to hear why; their smooth grooves, polished production and stylish synth flourishes neatly update an iconic sound for urban millennials without tipping over into retro pastiche.
Froth For a band who started out as a joke, Froth have come a long way – it’s not everyday you get handpicked by Heidi Slimane to soundtrack an Yves Saint Laurent fashion show. But then their dreamy, neo-psychedelic rock and meditative surf-pop has an enticing charm all of its own.
Mister & Mississippi It’s not easy to pull off soft, shimmering indie-folk, but this Dutch fourpiece do it with aplomb. The beauty of their chiming guitars, gorgeous melodies, and hushed, unhurried rhythms elevates them above the ranks of twee navel-gazers and justifies the faith shown in them by V2 and an army of loyal fans.

Music programme. 08 March Sunday Nouveau Vélo Suburban isolation and dreams of escape are the twin forces driving Nouveau Velo’s dream-pop. They may not paint with the darker shades of melancholy, but there’s plenty of angst and frustration bubbling under the music’s bright surface, not to mention desire; to escape, to feel and to live.
PAUW Three friends crafting away in a garage studio for a year is exactly the type of story rock’n’roll dreams are made of. Amid all the bombast and sage nods to the blues and Sixties and Seventies psychedelia, there’s a homespun charm and honesty to their take on mind-expanding grooves that shows just how much effort they put in.
Panda Bear One of the most acclaimed and influential experimental musicians of the last 15 years. Over nine albums with Animal Collective and five as Panda Bear, Noah Lennox has crafted bewitching, hard-to-pin-down pop that drifts through the mind and teases the soul; soft and dreamy one moment, bustling and angular the next.
POND Taking their cues from Sixties and Seventies psychedelia, Aussie poprockers POND have a lazy haze and retro charm that’s all their own. Wit, joy and good ol'-fashioned stomping tunes are their calling cards, a potent mix that’s like the Summer of Love on a sun-kissed Bondi beach. Radio Noet Noet We’re going to sidestep the vast jungle of punny Africa references and metaphors to say this: Radio Noet Noet will make you sweat; a sticky, tropical sweat. For four Dutch DJs born and raised in Den Haag, their love for African music is so deep and undeniably true, it’ll make you forget we’ve swept an entire continent into

Sekuoia There’s a dreamlike quality to mysterious Danish producer Sekuoia’s music, so full of delicate wisps that you fear it might disappear into the ether at any moment. It’s minimalist yet urban, a sleek, shiny tapestry that blends both organic and synthetic sounds into something undeniably modern.

Skip & Die Some music defies categorisation, Skip & Die’s being a good example.
