intro
20something There’s too much to do around here, too many stories to tell. It often happens that you hardly ever see the storytellers; you only see their paintings, their films, their externalised tales. Perhaps you don’t see anything at all — you only listen, let all other senses feel out the unfolding narrative. Creativity is often unassuming, but wherever it manifests it does so uncompromisingly, running deep and seeking the right course to disembody into the pantheon of stories that need to be told. We searched for and found 20-something examples, 20-something reasons to remind us that more than a trait, creativity is a presence: it can be embodied by anything, anyone, as long as they are willing to surrender completely to its force. 5

National Crime Lydia Ainsworth History release party Ft. Orphan Swords + Onrust + Ripit and Icon Template music
2 June – Magasin4, Brussels 20.00 – €8 – free for members
2 June – Trix, Antwerp 19.30 – €15 – free for members
Think hypnotic techno, EBM or post-industrial music and National Crime History might just come to mind. For the official release of their compilation produced by Belgian labels Silken Tofu and Idiosyncratics, National Crime History have put the spotlight on four central figures of today’s Belgian industrial techno scene. They begin with Orphan Swords, known for their dark electro and wild performances. They’ll be joined by Onrust, ‘queen of the killer beats’, Icon Template’s insanely paced techno and Ripit.
The Toronto-based songwriter is back with a second album, and continues to confound attempts to define her hybrid musical style. Her mystifying voice finds echo in songs like ‘The Road’, which she defined as ‘a marriage of Enya and the Weeknd’. Diving into a poppier universe (reminiscent of FKA Twigs), she combines what seems like a mix of postmodern R&B with electronic music, while dark synths and majestic piano chords result in an eclectic album full of nuances.

Mannequin Pussy
The instruments and props used for his compositions range from guitars and sitars to more electronic soundscapes created by drones.
6 June – La Zone (PopKatari), Liège 20.00 – €7 – free for members
The Experimental Tropic Blues Band + the Glücks
Between explosive guitars and powerful drums, Philadelphia punks Mannequin Pussy are not for the faint hearted. The sharpness of their songs reflects in Marisa Dabice, lead singer and guitar player, who doesn’t go in for subtleties in her lyrics or vocal style. Mannequin Pussy is able to balance chaotic yet tuneful and energising melodies, which should equally enchant death metal, shoegaze and mosh pit amateurs.
Six Organs of Admittance
8 June – Botanique, Brussels 19.30 – €15 – free for members Six Organs of Admittance is guitarist Ben Chasny’s project that began as a solo endeavour but now features other musicians on stage as well as on his records. His fascination for Eastern and Western music generates a folky, trance-like and mystical sound, inspired by musicians such as Roy Harper and Davy Graham.
9 June – KulturA (JauneOrange), Brussels – 20.00 – €10 free for members Think rock’n’roll is dead? Meet Dirty Coq, Boogie Snake and Devil D’Inferno – aka The Experimental Tropic Blues Band. They specialise in raw unpolished blues blended with rock’n’roll and a sniff of punk. The three-piece saw the light in 1999 in Liège and has since shared stages with acts including The Black Lips and Heavy Trash all over Europe and North America, while also working alongside legendary musician/producer Jon Spencer. Now they’re presenting their new album, Spit’n Split, and a film about their on-the-road adventures. They’ve had some memorable shows (flashing dicks included), so this isn’t one to miss.

Friday night’s line-up will feature underground, experimental and playful bands like BeraadGeslagen, Philadelphia-based producer and drummer NAH and Austrian rapper Koenig with his smooth fusion of hip hop and techno. The party continues with Venderstrooik and Flat Earth Society & David Bovée, all promising wild performances.
Noura Mint Seymali + Xylouris White
10 June – Vooruit, Ghent 20.30 – €15 – free for members
Plant your feet at Vooruit; let your ears travel all around the world. Noura Mint Seymali is a Mauritanian griot singer. While griot may sounds like the African version of riotgirrrl — a genre we would love to discover — it is in fact a form of musical storytelling. On her much lauded debut album, Tzenni, Seymali mixed her singings and harp-playing with the psychedelic guitar of husband Jeiche Ould Chighaly. Geographically closer to home is the music of Cretan lute player Giorgos Xylouris. Together with Nick Cave compatriot Jim White, he plays the traditional folk music of his island with a punk-like intensity.
Ray Fuego + UMI 16 June – In De Ruimte, Ghent 20.00 – free for members Described by one of our colleagues as a ‘punk and posh version of 2Pac’, Ray Fuego hails from the outer edges of south-east Holland to bring us his smooth-as-silk brand of trap. Formerly of the Bummy Boys, Fuego’s solo project sees him weaving between Dutch and English and laying out his worldview over heavy, gloomy beats that are as stylish as they are catchy. As part of the SMIB collective, he’s already a fixture in the burgeoning experimental hip hop scene over in the Netherlands, so it was only a matter of seconds before we saw him turn up in the rest of the Low Countries. Support comes from Brussels-based UMI, aka Zwangere Guy’s DJ. Expect some dark and hard shit.

3 Years Foot Juice XL 26 June – DOK (Democrazy), Ghent 20.00 – €16 – free for members
30 June – Het Bos, Antwerp 22.00 – €TBA – free for members
On their third album, 1000 Days, Los Angelenos Wand added some progressive folk rock sounds to their psychedelic mix of fuzzy guitars and meandering tracks. While the sounds seem more streamlined, the Ty Segall proteges still manage to hide an LSD trip — albeit a bad one — in the lyrics. Lines about paralysis, fear, paranoia and curdling dreams are juxtaposed with sweet folky garage pop. The end result is reminiscent of The Soft Machine and Hawkwind, and the group is a shining star in the current LA psych universe.
Foot Juice is a collective in which members share a passion for footwork, booty house and jungle, and which quickly became a record label with the ambition to further promote these genres of music. Today the collective turns three and Het Bos has agreed to host a lineup devoted to the Chicago scene.

L’auberge espagnole 16 June – Cinematek, Brussels 18.30 – €6 – free for members A lot of folks in their twenties and thirties would be lying if they said L’auberge espagnole didn’t somehow inspire them to venture out into the world and meet the people that eventually shaped them. A film that stays relevant through the years, Cédric Klapisch’s best-known movie will be screened in the presence of the filmmaker himself. A story to relive as if it had once been your own, way back in the Noughties.

SLOW #2 1 June – KVS, Brussels 20.30 – €17 – free for members 9 June – Cinema Zuid, Antwerp 18.00 – €5 – free for members Oscar goof notwithstanding, there’s good reason why Barry Jenkins’s coming-of-age drama deserved the accolades. This delicate triptych covering three phases in young Chiron’s formative years paints a subtle yet powerful picture of what it’s like to be an outsider when you’re already different. And like a painting, the colours are beautiful, the characters vibrant and the interpretation deeply personal.
SLOW (Slam Our World) puts urban word art and theatre together. After a successful first edition, a new international artist is invited to take residency in Brussels for a couple of weeks and share the stage with local artists. This time it’s Quinsy Gario who will attempt to portray the colourful and multifaceted soul of the city. Born in Curaçao Gario was raised in St Maarten and the Netherlands, where he studied film, theatre and television but always with a focus on gender and postcolonialism.

Dutch artists Villevoye and Dietvorst make videos that explicitly distance themselves from the purposeful aspect of documentaries. Evidence is their first major solo exhibition featuring ‘Evidence and Showcase’: a double projection that consists of scenes from existing movies and new fragments. The fragments are shown in no particular order and without narrative or causality, to create a feeling of instantaneousness. The projection focuses on two major themes: the memory of World War I and the encounter with the Asmat people in the Papua province of Indonesia.

Fleur De Roeck ‘I really feel the urge to make things’ Fleur is a painter. And a drawer. And a sculptor. She’s all that at the same time. A resolute and imaginative drawer as a kid, her passage through graphic design school drastically limited her creative spirit — a bit hard for someone who looks up to artists like Per Kirkeby or Niki de Saint Phalle Tarot Garden. What keeps her going through the struggles of an artist’s life? The ‘urge’ to create, even if things don’t fall in place instantly. As she says it herself: ‘Keep going and don’t give up even when you have the feeling you’re alone on your path.’ And it seems to be working: her collages, paintings and sketches have appeared in exhibitions in Belgium and more recently Paris. Next stop: the Oude Beurs in Antwerp this June, together with Kop. Age: 25

Sam Gunst ‘Make it your obsession, choose your priorities and try not to lose your focus’ Art director and graphic designer Sam Gunst is all about supporting noise pollution and presenting the wrong. Working under the alter ego 1STE VERDIEP, he began publishing art books, which led to the creation of the creative studio and publishing house EURO2000. The latter focuses on artist editions and techno/acid tape releases, having recently worked on the KERM-released Weird Dust EP. Sam is also part of the In De Ruimte team and is active in the Camping Penrose silkscreen collective. Taking cues from other Ghent stalwarts such as Social Harmony and 019, Sam’s tentacular reach is currently handling several projects: more KERM releases and compilations coming out this year, plus a mystery project titled ENERGIE01, promoting, in his words, ‘the research, support and presentation of the sonic symbiosis of experimentation and captured dancefloor motion’. Indeed, something to check out in the (hopefully) very near future. 25

Chloë Delanghe ‘I don’t really have a motto or anything like that, I just feel the necessity to make my work and I hope that someone will appreciate it’ Artist and filmmaker Chloë Delanghe knew what she wanted to do from a young age: at 12, her father gave her a book about Diane Arbus which set her off a decisive path into photography and, ultimately, film. Her fascination with portraiture, specifically with its themes and structure, is palpable in poised, contemplative works that reflect her interest in the distance and longing of image-making. Projects such as Reasons To Be Cheerful, a fragmented portrait of her mother reconstructed through photographs of objects, rooms and family pictures, represent contained gestures seeking both closeness and distance. Currently a resident at FLACC in Genk, she is working on a short film portrait of her brother playing magic cards. She will soon begin production on a film about a group of pigeons in Tokyo, following her show Minnebrieven at WIELS and correlating said pigeons with the universal language of love letters. 26

Shirley Villavicencio Pizango ‘People really fascinate me, specifically how unique each person is’ Shirley Villavicencio Pizango is what may be called a multifaceted artist. Passionate about painting portraits and an art teacher for children on the side, she invests a lot of her time and energy into meeting new people who will trigger a unique, moving inspiration for her portraits. As an amateur potter, she also strives to combine her passions, and plans on moving to Japan for a month to take her first steps in applied arts. Her inspirations include Frida Kahlo and Picasso, but there’s nothing like positive energy to keep her going through her projects; because things aren’t always easy and can take some time, patience is a really important quality. In her own words: ‘You will always find someone who likes your work or feels a connection with it, and that’s the most beautiful thing.’ Age: 29 29

Umi & Kaito Defoort Umi: ‘I was born into a musical family … All those paths led me to sitting behind a computer all day and using all those experiences to make the best music I currently can’
Kaito: ‘Always make music for yourself first, and if other people like it, then you should just keep trusting your taste’ Brothers Umi and Kaito Defoort share more than (frankly, pretty great) genes. Their love for music runs in the family and currently has them both pursuing this passion in their respective ways: Umi as Zwangere Guy’s partner in crime, and Kaito as a music producer seeking to flourish as a full-fledged fruity loops master. Kaito, who is also a part-time model signed to Rebel Management, is well past the Ableton stage, developing a vision inspired by the likes of Monte Booker and Lege Kale — without sacrificing his social life, of course. As for Umi, his latest ventures include producing a song for Dave Budha, ‘Niet met mij’, and working on his own musical project; in fact, he’ll be opening for Subbafave Ray Fuego at In De Ruimte on 16 June. Siblings taking over: that’s how we like it ’round here. Kaito Age: 18 Location: Brussels soundcloud.com/kaitodef @kaitodefoort

Miles Fischler ‘I like it when photographs are complex and confusing to the viewer or when they start resembling paintings because of their play with light and reflections, or their low quality’ Remember that kid in school who was always taking photos, making movies, dangling between the real world and their own version of it? Antwerp photographer Miles Fischler was certainly in that category. She’s still up to all sorts of cool things — working for The Word magazine, freelancing for miscellaneous publications (including yours truly), organising exhibitions and artistic activities with the RUIS collective and on her own … you get the picture (pun intended). This month her work will be exhibited alongside that of fellow 20-somethinger Fleur De Roeck at the Oude Beurs in Antwerp, as well as in the 80 Days of Summer photography festival in Ghent. Inspired by the likes of Alex Webb, Harry Gruyaert, Giacometti and Matisse, Fischler approaches street photography with the disposition of a painter. Her belief? Everything is relative and nothing is worth overthinking. Also, to smile a lot. Age: 26 33

Tiny Geeroms ‘My dream is to mean something for the weaker people and nature’
If you’re a Subba member, you’ll probably be familiar with Tiny Geeroms, who has taken pictures for various features in the mag. She even might have photographed you for We Visit You. When her work is not commissioned,Tiny (pronounced ‘Tee-nee’, by the way) captures landscapes of the US fauna and flora and is planning to work around portraits of people in the street. Her photography endeavour started on a road trip to Spain back in 2014 when, after scrolling through snaps of the day, acrylic artist, friend and mentor Shirley Villavicencio persuaded Geeroms to share her work. With inspirations like Patti Smith and Sam Dillemans, her drive and confidence come through in her work. Geeroms is on a continuous experimental journey, but as an occupational therapist graduate she hopes that one day her work could be perceived as support to the weak. 34

Laura Geiregat ‘I often struggle with the concept of ‘fashion’, but then I try to remind myself that it’s just a really creepy word. I feel more comfortable in knowing that people actually can feel a non superficial happiness through clothes’ Laura Geiregat is a fashion designer just about to finish her master’s degree at the School of Arts in Ghent. At 16, she was sketching outfits spotted on YouTube and soon figured that she might as well try her hand at making them; she bought her first sewing machine for next to no money and carried it home on her bike. Geiregat’s come a long way since then, developing a style heavily centred on texture and colour and integrating artisan techniques like weaving on an old loom and silkscreen printing, techniques that allow her to work on a more intuitive basis. For her, the ‘mistakes’ that come with the craft are what make it interesting; the ‘ugliness’ resulting from missteps is often the most beautiful and surprising part about the creative process. Through all of this, Geiregat maintains, there is still space for storytelling, poetry and subtlety. Age: 25 37

Guillaume Brevers ‘Being able to share your knowledge with some new people and invite them to a common project is a remarkable thing’ Hailing from a tiny town in the heart of the Ardennes, Guillaume Brevers used to book punk shows in his region, all DIY and with all the MS Paint flyers you’d expect. Nowadays he runs his own agency, BFOS Booking, whose roster includes artists with strong musical identities such as Yung Lean, A$AP Mob, Lil Yachty, and more recently Princess Nokia, Tommy Genesis and Nadia Rose. Through his work, Brevers provides the artists with a platform to spread their message and consolidate their art. Inspired by team dynamics such as that of role players in basketball, he appreciates taking a backseat from the spotlight and providing the essential support that will see the team to the finals. For Brevers, being an agent means putting yourself in the service of the artist — and, by extension, their art — and also participaing in their development, not in order to shine, but to put a light on them. Elise Peroi
‘My work feeds on many thoughts and readings that all lead to reflections on the richness of nature: every element in nature is structured and connected to create perfect shapes and harmony’ Specialising in weaving, French textile artist Elise Peroi breaks down landscape images and reconstructs them on canvas. With the concept of weaving at the epicenter of her work, Peroi has also investigated the fields of performance and installation which led to a recent collaboration with Hong Kong choreograph and dancer Mui Cheuk-yin. The confrontation between two distinct cultures evolved into a fusion of ancestral weaving techniques with traditional Chinese dance. After presenting the performance in Halles de Schaerbeek, they are now looking to transpose it to the Hong Kong Arts Centre. As a dance emerges when the artists’ gestures and movements succeed and cross one another, the performance comes to symbolise how Elise perceives weaving as an expression of the whole body. 40

Stikstof ‘Make credible music before you brag and boast in videos’
Emerging from the famed hangout spot that is Saint Catherine in Brussels comes a five-headed beast upping the ante in the Belgian rap game. STIKSTOF is Jazz, Omar-G, Astro, Rosko and Deejay Vega, who have been making music together since 2013. Inspired by acts like Opgezwolle and fellow Belgians Romeo Elvis, Le77, Gandhi and many others, STIKSTOF was born from a series of writing sessions and jams in their DIY basement. Their latest release, STIKSTOF/02, was followed by stints at Couleur Café and Dour festival last year; nowadays, the family has grown into the full-blown collective FRONTAL, which runs a hip hop radio show, organises local concerts and parties and is in the midst of building a neighbourhood-oriented studio at Biesterbroek. Watch out for their third album/mixtape set to drop spring next year; you’ll be hearing a lot about these guys in the not-so-distant future. Age: 5 41

Thomas Huyghe ‘I always like it when something’s finished and I can say, “I made that.” That’s the reason I make things, to finish things and be able to look back and be proud or ashamed’
While his creative roots are now all tangled up in the Flemish media landscape with his contribution to the writing and presenting of several TV shows, Huyghe’s wheelhouse was originally drawing and storytelling by means of animation. That’s why — when he happens to have some time on his hands — he still puts his visual artistic skills to the test. This smorgasbord of talent makes Huyghe evolve professionally — as a successful lone wolf at times, and as part of the thriving pack at others. No matter the medium, be it storytelling, animation or even music, Huyghe has this spark of passion that spreads like wildfire in the minds of all who are hungry for creation and inspiration. ‘I have a lot to thank the internet for; it literally shaped the way I create and look at things and I’m very thankful for that. It’s a pretty big part of my work as well. Thank you, internet’ Though his artistic output includes making electronic music as well as sculptures, installations, drawings and digital media, Mathias Mu isn’t defined by a single discipline; rather, he sees his multiple practices as one cohesive body of work. In his own words, what he creates is closer to a language, a concept or an entity, using elements of modern society and which reflects on everyday reality. A self-taught musician, he studied fine arts and organically began combining the two; he recently did a performance at De Biënnale Van België where he combined sculptures and music in ways that blurred the boundaries between instrument and artefact. His upcoming projects include an exhibition this month at Soil Collective in Brussels and a new music project with Lisa Lotion called LOTOMU followed by a duo exhibition at the Pinkhouse in Antwerp. A dynamic process, always gaining momentum. Age: 26 45

Atelier Brenda ‘You can sense when a design is well thought out, and grew from a strong conceptual idea or thought, and represents it. Everything can be inspiring, from a simple biscuit wrap to typography in the streets’ You might have seen their offbeat, somewhat eerie style shoot for us a while back, or come across their highly distinctive visual world on flyers and brochures all over the place. Graphic designers and creative directors Amélie Bakker, Sophie Keij and Nana Esi run one of the most prolific, exciting and oddly subversive collectives out there. Through Atelier Brenda, what started as an online portfolio project turned into a creative platform for the trio to present their bold conceptual imagery and an aesthetic that lies squarely between the deliberate and the haphazard. While they each pursue their own individual projects in their own corner of Belgium, they collude every Thursday for their job as graphic designers for Beursschouwburg and do what they do best: communicating with imagery Names: Amélie Bakker, Sophie Keij & Nana Esi and staying chill the whole time. Louise Osieka ‘The most meaningful experiences I’ve had so far happened at the intersections between seemingly banal encounters and what I thought to be logical next steps; a transparent, linear path is an illusion’
Currently acting as artistic and general director of CIAP, Nieuwe Kunstverein in Hasselt, art historian Louise Osieka has long been interested in contemporary artists, namely in the strategies they use and the issues they address. Today she witnesses an emerging generation of ambitious and engaged women. Inspired and influenced by her peers, Osieka continues to challenge conventions and to experiment in the unconventional atmosphere that so characterises CIAP. Next on her list are solo shows by Brussels’s own Aline Bouvy and British artist Dan Walwin, both set to open on 11 June, as well as a collaboration this fall with an external curator for a group show relating to the periphery as an artistic strategy. Leonardo Van Dijl ‘I’d like to be Batman … when you think about it, he really is the coolest. He always wears black, his cars are insane, and he invests all his private funds into making the world a better place. That’s just very classy’ You might know him for the slick videos he’s made for Oscar and the Wolf, School is Cool and Soldier’s Heart, but Leonardo Van Dijl is up to a lot more these days. Take his now-infamous TOMBOLA parties, which began as a way to rid himself (and his mom) of the books, films and music he collected obsessively as a teen. Preferring to give them away rather than sell them — ideally in a way that would benefit the greater good — the first edition of TOMBOLA was thus born. All proceeds go to Cinemaximilaan, an organisation that stages cultural gatherings bringing together undocumented immigrants and locals, and the concept has become one of Van Dijl’s current preoccupations — aside from writing an upcoming feature film, that is. To quote our generation’s foremost authorities on the subject of positive thought, Leonardo has this to say: ‘Just spice up your life.’ Age: 26 50

Amina Saâdi ‘I like to think that I’m free to develop a project based on meetings or observations and not by being involved in the art world’ As a graphic designer, Amina Saâdi is about as real as you can get. In fact, exploring social and economic realities lies at the heart of her work. Her interest in social housing and its architectural impact on people was the inspiration behind her book project, Versailles. In it, the eponymous housing project where her father lives is juxtaposed with the famous French palace after which it was named, emphasising questions of territory, community and identity. With her residency in De Koer, Saâdi hopes to once more focus on the her immediate surroundings and explore the different flavours of her neighbourhood — such as the Palestinian baker who’s been providing residents with homemade pastries for years. In so doing, her aim is to develop the noun ‘graphic designer’ into a verb, presenting the occupation as an active and — most importantly — curious one. 53

Marine Dricot ‘When I work on a music video, I always put myself in the shoes of someone who doesn’t like the song, and try to find a way to intrigue him enough to watch the clip to the end’
Filmmaker and photographer Marine Dricot has recently focused on making video clips for bands including Odezenne, Girls in Hawaii and Robbing Millions. A quick glance at her work reveals a perfect fusion of appealing objects and unsettling images, which unite to transport the viewer to a unique, dream-like world. Her efforts go well beyond the construction of intriguing-butbeautiful universes, however: she always strives to add an explanatory level to a song with her imagery. With music guiding her creativity, Dricot enjoys exploring the dark sides of humankind while breaking down the myth of the modern American dream.

Liyo Gong ‘Work with ethics, keep things fun for yourself, never stop learning’
Liyo Gong is a busy multi-skilled bee who is continuously expanding her horizons with multiple personas. You’re probably familiar with her thanks to the He4rtbroken parties she organises in Brussels with close friend Stef, and which Subba has helped promote in the past. But Gong is foremost a freelance video editor with a master’s degree in politics who volunteers for the China Independent Film Archive, an organisation helping and curating Chinese independent filmmakers. With two years of experience with He4rtbroken, Gong and Stef are now looking to take it to another level; more collaborations with like-minded organisations such as Kunstenfestivaldesarts and a compilation featuring new tracks from some of their favourite artists. Just a few more items to add to her infinite to-do list. Keep it going, Gong keep us hungry for more. Age: 28 57

La Superette ‘Don’t quibble and be generous’ Liège collective Superette unites designers and plasticians to combine forces and develop innovative conceptual projects. Covering a large spectrum of activities from event production and product design to filmmaking, scenography and communication, to name but a few, Superette is the ultimate content platform. The collective’s variety of disciplines, experiences and influences makes each project the result of a complementary — and often spontaneous — collaboration. RIN ‘In a live setting, it’s always inspiring to hear and see people’s reaction to my music. If I didn’t play live, I think RIN would have a short life’
Behind the moniker RIN lies the striving for a forgotten cultural identity that is brought back through pantomimic melodic acrobatics. Having come into being in the context of dance, RIN’s musical experiments have gradually morphed into a self-sustaining form of art that still gets its momentum from its choreographic potentiality. As the loud fall of a tree in the woods, her songs only exist because of the people they reach. RIN’s whole approach to her work as an artist is to purposefully overlook the process in order to focus on the effects and consequences of what she delivers. Age: 28 61
