This photo was taken for Subbacultcha by Yael Malka in New York, USA, during the shoot with Deli Girls. In an email accompanying the photos Yael stated: “I basically just hung out with Tommi and Danny for a few hours walking around Tommi’s neighborhood. The two of them LOVEEEEE cars and transportation in general so they had a fun idea to walk around and show me their favorite cars. After that we took a walk in the park and came across a bunch of guys on their ATVs and motorcycles and they flipped out cause like I said, they love transportation so much and they couldn’t believe the shoot ended that way -- it was really sweet.” Note from our copy editor: ‘As much as sequence may be overrated, “page numbers” are two sequential words :)’
The Void has no pagenumbers. Sequence is overrated.

CEEL MOGAMI DE HAAS Interview by Angela Donskaia Photos shot by Annabel van Royen in Amsterdam, NL
Ceel Mogami de Haas is a multidisciplinary artist from Geneva, currently in the second year of his residency at de Rijksakademie. His work could be described as visual poetry translated in sculptural objects, 3D video animation, drawings and much more. On a rainy Sunday afternoon, we visited the laboratory of all his ideas – his studio.
, Dear Void, I wanted to send you some pictures I took during the time I spent in Peru. I was so happy to be walking around alone on this entire different part of the world. Being alone was a good thing, but I noticed that I was constantly afraid something was going to happen to me. I started to appreciate the safety net I have at home. I used my camera to make myself feel safe and more at home, since with my camera between me and my surroundings, it feels like nothing can really get to me.

, Dear Void, I fell in love with a new form of language, a language which already existed but is rarely noticed independently. It is the language which is found in ‘packaging materials’. These forms are considered a by-product, while visually they are in fact very diverse and interesting.
This dazzling DJ from Delft curated a pelagic playlist with trance-y tracks for every occasion: from the bluest of nights to a space shuttle trip. A music selection which feels like we’re scuba diving right into an abyss of undiscovered talent and nautical memories. A song for a walk on the beach EVOLUTION - SUB MARINE A song that reminds you of your youth / student life / forever young feels BLACK MERLIN – TRANS-80 A song to play at home or at someone’s house before going out EBOP – NOO A song as background music whilst creating art PONTIAC STREATOR & ULLA STRAUS – CHAT THREE A song as backdrop for a dinner date SAUL STOKES - SWEET PARAFFIN

Hi Void! I’m a photographer and a music artist. I made this book for my boyfriend Wesley and we would like to share it with you and the rest of the world.
A song for courage and confidence DJ UNGEL - TRANSPIRITS A song to bathe in melancholy S.E.T.I – MARE CRISIUM A song you would listen to if you’d travel in a space shuttle HAR-EL PRUSSKY – TANTRIC A song for late nights which turn into early mornings FLUX – TAC JAZZ Get infused with more wavy music selected by Woody, blended with his deep sea memories at subbacultcha.nl.
Hey Ceel, how are you feeling on this rainy Sunday? I’m a bit ill actually. Hence why I’m wearing the big artist coat. It’s one week until the RijksakademieOPEN, so the timing is not ideal. I just keep working though. Last week we had a Halloween party here, so I’m recovering from that a bit too. It was so much fun. We work here, but we also eat here, party here and basically do everything here. It’s one big community. How important is community life for your art work?
Best regards, Fahd Zidou
, Hey Void, My name is Martin, Im an Argentinean human that has been living in Amsterdam for over three years now. I make music that makes no sense, and no money, but feel free to check it out here: [search ‘tot synths, Martin Alva’ in Spotify] I have nine monthly listeners on Spotify (I’m pretty sure one of them is my dad). Most of these songs I just create with a little midi keyboard on long plane flights since I do not handle flying very well, it just helps me to take the edge off. I know I’m late for the submission but thought it was worth giving it a shot (or at least sneak in 1 more monthly listener and hit those double digits).
For me it has always been part of it. Back in Geneva, where I’m originally from, I opened up a space with writers, creators, publishers. For me it’s important to keep this collaborative aspect in my work. Through that community aspect we can think together and figure out alternative ways of doing things, but we can also think about surviving. Surviving?
What are you making in this studio right now? I’m making a 3D animation with two videos of a wolf talking, inspired by Herman Hesse’s short story Der Wolf. Wolves have always inhabited stories. In that sense I want to explore their narrative. What fascinates you about wolves? Wolves are interesting figures throughout the history of literature. They are shapeshifters, they transform. Wolves are also scarier when you can’t see them. For example, wolves have disappeared from the British islands at the end of the 16th century. People killed them all. But the fear persisted. Look at the literature that came afterwards, gothic fiction is full of nerve-wracking wolves. Like in the woods, you would be scared of not knowing where they could be, rather than facing them. In French you even say to someone when you missed each other “Je t’ai loupé!”, meaning literally “I wolfed you”. Wolves are about missing, not seeing.
In the economical sense. Like in our space we try to pay everyone. It sounds normal but it definitely isn’t in the art world. As an artist you usually work for peanuts. A dinner, maybe a drink afterwards. We want to make it a basic fact that people who work (with us) get paid. How much time do you spend at the studio? 24/7 - or well not 24, but 7, every day. That’s a lot. Yes, it’s important to know I do everything myself. Sometimes people hire technicians to do things they don’t know how to. In order to hire somebody I would need a very specific plan. Something set in stone. By making it myself I have the freedom to let it transform along the way.

Interview
RAVEN ARTSON Interview by Angela Donskaia Photo shot by Rick Erfmann in Los Angeles, USA
From our chilly Amsterdam H.Q., whilst LA was bathed in a golden glow, we spoke to the ever sunny Raven Artson. He’s currently on a getaway from his Dutch home in the land of milk and honey, seeking inspiration in the raw Californian dream. The best time to call him up for an easy breezy chat.
I didn’t feel like eating anything. But if I had to pick something, it would be the good old patatje mayo. <3 What’s the last thing you googled? Roland JX8P synthesizer. It’s the synthesizer I’m going to buy tomorrow. I have to pick it up in the super posh Calabasas celeb area. Really curious how that’s gonna look like.
How did you end up in L.A.? I want to spend some time here to discover the musical climate. Most of the music I listen to is made here. It’s exciting to see in real life what my idols have been inspired by.
Who or what would you take to a deserted island?
You will be missed in the Netherlands.
My girlfriend, friends and family. And my laptop. I write, edit and produce a lot of music with it.
Oh, I’ll still be around all the time. I’m really thrilled about performing at your launch party.
Songs you keep playing on repeat these days?
How does L.A. make you feel?
Empress Of - Within Yves Tumor - Licking An Orchid Jorge Elbrecht x Ariel Pink - Hang On To Life
To me, L.A. represents a celebration of life. It’s notable that even the music I produce here is way more cheerful compared to what I make in Amsterdam. I think it has something to do with the sunny desert climate. Life is way more funky and soulful here.
What’s the thing you’re most proud about? My music. What’s the thing you’re most insecure about?
Was going solo a long time dream already? Also, my music. I think it was the best way to put all of my ideas into action. I got my first four track recorder when I turned 15 and just started making mixtapes and demo’s. And suddenly there was ‘Mozes and the Firstborn’ – the first real band I was in. We did everything ourselves. Later on I also produced music for other artists, like Ray Fuego. I never stopped doing all of that. Going solo is just a very organic move. It just seems abrupt to the outside world. Who did you want to be as a kid? Working in music has always been a dream. I just didn’t aim for it as pragmatically back then. My life philosophy was to not overthink. So as soon as I came home from school, I started calling around venues and bookers to ask if the band could perform there. That’s simply how you got things done. What’s your favourite colour? Red. I just realised I actually wear it a lot. Sometimes I’m even fully dressed in a ketchup red suit. It’s a very romantic and passionate colour – both positive and negative. Very outspoken. Yeah, I really like it. What’s your star sign, are you a Scorpio?
What else do you enjoy doing, besides music?
So far the work of Raven Artson has been all about collaborations. Whether he’s banging the drums for his band Moses and the Firstborn, or producing music for the likes of Ray Fuego. But now for his new solo project, he’s spending time in L.A., all by himself. Serendipitously, the perfect moment to get to know him.
What do they say about Virgos? Apparently they come across quite introverted to the outside world. Yet, on the inside there is a constant urge to improve, as well as an drive
What’s your favourite music? Anything as long as I get this strong emotional connection with it. This can range from artists I mentioned above, to Kanye West, The Byrds, Michael Jackson, together PANGEA, and Rihanna. What’s your life mantra?
towards perfectionism.
Do you travel by yourself a lot?
Just try to live a little.
Yes for sure, sounds like me! But doesn’t that count for all of us? Don’t you recognise yourself in this?
This trip is the first time ever I’ve traveled so far on my own. I’ve realised that it actually helps to get new energy and inspiration. Also, it challenges me to make the best out of new situations and go for it with full energy.
What’s your favourite movie?
How do you like to escape (from everyday life or in times of stress)?
, It’s like the cute schoolgirl. It expresses an optimistic view online, a positive emotion. However, she’s still lost in thoughts.
100%! Haha, see! We could all be friends. Do you love being in groups and around people?
No, I’m a Virgo. Why did you think so? They say Scorpios are also quite the passionate type – both positive and negative.
A part of my creative process is talking to people on philosophical or psychological stuff. I love it. A lot of my friends are directors. creators and photographers. I love to hear them talk about their work and getting inspired.
I love having the option to be surrounded by people, yet consciously not ‘use’ the situation to socialise with them. When I feel lonely and don’t have people around me, I’ll call everyone to ask where they are. Being around people also gives me the space to be less self conscious. It helps me to switch off the overthinking button. It gives me space to make decisions.
I don’t necessarily hit the club straight away or start drinking a lot or anything. I prefer to first talk to a friend about the things that are on my mind. I need a psychological relief before I can go out and have fun. What’s your favourite hangover food? Anything greasy. I don’t really do too much weed, but I did it in California and it’s way stronger here. I had such a bad hangover
The Double Life of Veronique Which emoji reflects your personality most?
Who are your favourite artists? Camiel Muiser and Rik Erfmann. Art Direction: Ekaterina Galetski, Hair Styling: Hester Beek, Make Up: Joyce Clerkx for Charlotte Tilbury and Kevin Murphy @ Angelique Hoorn Management, Hair Colouring: Camilla Turelli Outfit: Demask Amsterdam — Raven Artson plays 21 December at OMG there are horses in the void! at OT301, Amsterdam. Hi Void!

I’ve been shying away from sending this stuff but I think I’ve gathered enough confidence to send it now. Here are some scans from my after school activity I call ‘lefty flip’. It’s basically me trying to learn to draw with my left hand (I’m right handed). I just wanted to let you know that I really care about this project and that I just needed to get this off my chest. I hope things won’t get awkward between us now,

Hi, Here is my story: I have a love / hate relationship with my creativity and art. The two demons on my shoulder, let’s call them ‘Perfectionism’ and ‘Over-thinker’, can totally numb out my creative process to a point of doubting myself as an artist. To overcome my perfectionism I’ve figured out some ways to reset my brain and work with mediums where I can let go of these controlling demons. So, I can tackle my ‘perfectionism demon’, but ‘over thinker demon’ is tapping my shoulder and slithers these ‘it’s not good enough’ thoughts and ensures that I never fully publish my work.

, Hi, I’m from the Philippines and 17 years old. I am a photographer, an illustrator and an aspiring creative who wants to learn more. My objective for now is to expose myself to the market, the creatives, and artists and having that connection will help me to grow and learn.

Skype interview
BEA1991 Interview by Angela Donskaia Screenshots made during the interview
BEA1991’s voice is like a lucid dream. It has an eerie register, in an almost otherworldly octave. Currently, she’s based in both London and Amsterdam. The world is her oyster. And with waves between us, we decided to set up a Skype date. A sea of thoughts on her safe ground, H2O love, and moral holidays.
‘Hij weet van theater een daad te maken.’ – De Morgen
Where are you right now? I’m at the studio now with Sega Bodega. It’s work in progress we’re really excited about. He makes hardcore clubby music, I don’t. So we’re kind of making a cross-fertilization out of that. It’s really interesting to work with people who do completely different things.

Does all the travelling have an influence on your friendships and relationships? How do you keep the feelings alive? Funnily enough, the feelings are only getting stronger. There’s a lot less noise. With distance, the people that matter most become more clear. Which life philosophy travels with you?
They say home is where the heart is. Where is that for you? I’ve learned that a physical home isn’t necessarily connected to feeling at home. You can eat and sleep anywhere, that doesn’t make it a home. Being creative with my feelings gives me happiness. Doing what I love, that is home for me. How would you describe the aura of London?
festivalinfo ita.nl/brandhaarden
Well, a lot of emission gasses, really. Interesting looking people. Incidental fashion. There’s also a very serious biking culture – dedicated, bizarre outfits, cameras attached to helmets. They’re like sci-fi bikers, adding a new dimension to the city.

How do you kill time whilst you’re travelling? I’ve just started something new, Softly John, a still life photography project. Most of the time I’m either editing pictures for that, or reading. What is your safe ground, what makes you feel calm?

I love showering, it’s so meditative. I feel reborn right after. It’s the first thing I want to do when I arrive somewhere. I also find pleasure in cooking and listening to the radio while doing so.
Poem written by Josh Woolford, 2018
What do you listen to on the radio? ADV ERTISEMENT
I don’t really listen to music on the radio. Most of the time I listen to interviews, theater plays, and podcasts. I’m a big fan of the BBC.
Fewer screens. Less laptop. Less phone. The digital world is a really good tool, but it’s shit to your physical body and mental state. Has it transformed things in your life already? I’ve been initiating more conversations with strangers (asking directions, sharing my curiosity about them) and I’m reading a lot more. The internet as a phenomenon, and “post-internet” visuals used to be part of my BEA1991 aesthetics, but it shouldn’t be at the heart of what I do anymore. What do you carry with you on tour? I’m addicted to water. I drink so much water. Even when I go out, I don’t really drink a lot of alcohol. It’s essential on my rider. Water is such a bizarre phenomenon if you think about it, how it looks, feels, moves. Tender Buttons by Gertrude Stein. Looking at the things in everyday life we got used to. That’s my philosophy in general I think. An experiment in taking steps back and reflect. How often do you go on a moral holiday then? To be honest I think my life is currently one big fat moral holiday. I constantly float in the grey space between working and playing - but always with discipline and self-reflection. I’m trying to connect both worlds in my work. That in-between zone has become part of how I look at the world. Best of both worlds. — BEA1991 plays 21 December at OMG there are horses in the void! at OT301, Amsterdam. Show free for members.

How do you feel when you’re home alone? I feel complete freedom. It’s something I’m consciously looking for when I’m home alone. I try to schedule one day a week for this. Then I just down a liter of coffee and start making a shitload of music. It’s also the time where I seize the moment to record some vocals – I prefer not to sing when there are flatmates around. When the coffee adrenaline rush kicks in, it’s awesome to watch Seinfeld or cruise through YouTube. Everything is way more funny with a load of caffeine in your body. Feels good to be home alone.

Deli Girls + Real Farmer + SEKT + Misha Gurovich
Ploegendienst Vinyl Release Party OCCII, Amsterdam
s105 (De School), Amsterdam Danny Orlowski and Tommi Kelly are the masterminds behind the relentless punk-noise duo, Deli Girls. Their compositions’ rigidness accompanied with Orlowski’s raw vocals is what draws you into their world of unapologetic sincerity. With their visceral debut album Evidence out and their infamous live shows, the New York group have built themselves a reputation, to say at the least.
Visuals by Misha Gurovich will be screened during our night on 1 December at s105 (De School)
This was posted by Tom Krell aka How to Dress Well after his show in our venue s105 on 18 October, 2018.
The self-proclaimed ‘100% anti-everything’ Ploegendienst wave their collective middle finger in the air, calling back to the hardcore heyday when Black Flag and Bad Brains were tearing it all down. The music is as messy as it gets, but it’s performed with high momentum and chokingly tight performances.

Josiah Konder’s music depicts life, as a merry-goround of both pleasure and pain with their debut album “Songs for the Stunned”. The Copenhagenbased rock ensemble ingeniously manages to touch upon the whole range of emotions through their narrative. The effect? Elegance in its purest form, followed by unexpected dynamic ruptures.

s105 (De School), Amsterdam
Sometimes the most beautiful things happen unintentionally. Working Titles accidentally created a beautiful record last spring while doing an improvised set in the garden of De School. The initial plan was to make a release out of that particular set, but their recording got lost. Plan B? Digging into the recordings of their rehearsals. The result? A hypnotic and delicate ambient record that’ll find you drifting away to a warm spring morning.
Born in Toledo; based in Berlin Charm fractures conventional views on gender and sexuality, using sound and various dance practices as a framework for unleashing emotion in live performances. Come and allow yourself to be charged up with transformative energy that outlives any straightforward party or club night.

ward-thinking artists and offering us all these wonderful shows! I managed to see some of my absolute favourite artists just because Subba was there for me and ah, the fun times I had at all these shows and all the people I’ve met! It feels like being part of the coolest secret club ever. At the beginning of each season, my heart still makes a little jump when I see that white envelope in the mail: what’s in store for the next 3 months? Always good stuff, always fun. Not to mention, my music taste really used the push from the magazine, I discovered so many talented peeps to fill my playlist for days. Now, in exchange of all the art I received from you, I give you mine. I’m mostly a collage enthusiast, very fond of chopping up magazines. My latest venture includes using damaged polaroids- small-scale experiments.
Interview
DELI GIRLS Interview by Nela Zielinska Photos shot by Yael Malka in New York, USA
What have you been up to lately? Tommi: We play a lot in New York. We’ re sort of doing everything we gotta do, here in America so we’re ready to go, hang out with you guys! You live and work in Brooklyn, New York. Is this abundance of the city affecting you in a certain way? Tommi: Totally, I mean I think making music in New York is probably pretty different from making music in a lot of other places. But you can be creative anywhere. And I think, even sometimes being in a big city could be counterintuitive for being really creative.
Danny Orlowski and Tommi Kelly are the masterminds behind the relentless punk-noise duo, Deli Girls. Their music constantly pushes the seams of belonging and genre categorisation. We caught up with them and talked all things New York, the source of their rigid approach, and how they managed to build their very own microcosm of transformative energy.
Danny: In New York, there are many wonderful, creative people. But I would say the scene is maybe not as diverse as it could be. As far as with people involved, it’s like a small bubble. Tommi: This is what I really respect about Danny. It seems like a lot of artists get on a stage so they can hide. I find that really counterintuitive, and a huge waste of time and maybe a little bit disrespectful to your audience. Both musically, lyrically, and performatively, directness is definitely a key tool for us.
And living in such an environment, can it be overwhelming? Tommi: You know what I think is overwhelming? It’s the scenes, and I think like maybe the vastness of some scenes. Especially in music, when two groups of people listen to two different genres of music that can be enough of a difference for them to not meet. And I think a lot of the shows we play, it’s not even just cross-genres. It’s sort of crossing these social scenes and bringing them together a little bit in some places. And I think those have been our best shows.
“It seems like a lot of artists get on a stage so they can hide. I find that really counter-intuitive.”
What kind of social scenes?
You always perform very close to the audience. Is the way you set up important for your performance? You, Danny, being in the crowd and Tommi staying close to the ground.
Tommi: I think that kids who are just a bit younger, right now, are looking at things in different ways, it’s really cool, that they are kind of beyond it.
Tommi: For me playing on the ground was a practical consideration. Everyone has a floor, not everyone has a cable or like an extension cord. But we figured out, I think from the very beginning, how to play in almost every circumstance.
As in not identifying with one particular group of people. Tommi: Totally. I think that kids going to the shows right now, not only are going to listen to lots of different kinds of music but they want to be around different kinds of people.
Danny: That’s another note about directness. If there’s ever like a closed stage, then I’m trying not to be on it.
Your album, Evidence, plays like a 30-minute long set cut into 8 tracks. It feels as if a live performance has been directly transcribed into a record. What’s behind this?
It also must impact the energy, when you’re being disconnected from people in a way like that. Danny: Yeah it always feels like I’m at a talent show or something.
Danny: That exactly right. It’s pretty much just a recording of one live take.
Wanting it to be as close to what a live show would feel like? Danny: Pretty much. I think that just when we’ve started out it was always more improvisational. Like we’ve had songs written, but the order, the way everything went together didn’t really matter and it was sort of on the fly. Kind of a never the same thing twice kind of thing. But now it’s more like definitive songs, more refined. In your music, you say a lot without really saying that much. Is the simplification of powerful topics something you thought about? Danny: It definitely has to be kept simple in order for it to be meaningful. We’ve been talking about this recently. About us not being merely actors. Just be real, because I can’t really fake it. I think there is a lot of music nowadays where there is indirectness, like using lyrics and covering their vocals up, just not really saying much. I just really like actually saying something. — Deli Girls play 1 December at s105 (De School), Amsterdam and 2 December V11,Rotterdam. Shows free for members.

information,
4 AM is the most spiritual hour of the day. When night dissolves into day. The magic hour. The liminoid phase of dreaming. We ask artists to set their alarm clock at 4 AM and create something covering their lucid dream state at that moment. Divine creations at the most ungodly hour. 4 AMEN.
note to self: don’t burn the flame, Janne Beldman, 2018, @studiojannebeldman
Janne Beldman is a visual and graphic designer, based in Rotterdam. A few weeks ago, she sent us her work including a short poem: THE 4LTERNATIVES — finding dark places to live, generating light to not die. creating sources to drink from and discovering ways to survive without them. It intrigued us. And we instantly crushed on her nocturnal words and aesthetics. We figured she is the perfect artist to wake up at 4 AM and make a work of art. Wanna make 4 AM last forever? We woke up more artists at this ungodly hour. Check their work at subbacultcha.nl.
