2022 Colts Coach Report

In order to look forward sometimes we must look back and I find it interesting every year we are asked to write a snapshot for the Annual Report to look back on what was written the year before and see how we have lived up to what we wrote. Last year I wrote this. “Regardless of what happens, this will be my last year as Colts coach at Subiaco. There are facets of our program and delivery that I felt I didn’t quite nail this season and I want to see if I can improve our program and players before finishing up. That will be the challenge in 2022, can we get a more connected group both socially and onfield, can we further educate players around craft and standards to see them improve and can we reach the heights we think the talented group that is coming through is capable of.” So, while 2022 from a pure wins and losses viewpoint was a significant improvement, the most pleasing aspect of 2022 was the cultural connection of our group both on and off the field. We made a more welcoming and educational environment that although consistently challenged continued to find a way to make the most of almost every opportunity. Ultimately our season ended on the preliminary final day at the hands of the eventual premiers by 10 points. We faced significant injury issues throughout the season which meant some of our most talented individuals were not playing in that game and for large parts of the season. Even with those players out though such was the depth and adaptability of our team we were able to remain competitive right up until the end and fell just sort and it took a premiership team to beat us. This is a credit to our whole program. We were represented in the Western Australian state program in 2022 with both players an integral part of the under-18’s team.

Congratulations to the players selected; Under 18s Tyrell Dewar and Koltyn Tholstrup We were led in 2022 by Captain Jacob Evitt who is a perfect example of what the Subiaco Football Club can help create. Jake’s development as a person and footballer over the last 3 years has been immense and I am incredibly proud of him and his family. Even after a season-ending injury his ability to stay engaged and help his teammates was never doubted. Helped by his greater leadership group of Ethan Barbieri, Jack Gouge, and Riley Wills who all did a good job helping foster a good group feel and standard in 22. We are blessed to have such great sponsors that help us to continue to drive our program. Thank you, to our Talent Pathway Partner, AE Hoskins Building Services as well as Holman, Bendigo North Perth Community Bank and Vision Financial Strategies. We are forever grateful for your continued support. We continue to try and build our connection to the community in which our players come from and I thank all the community coaches who I work with week in and week out when our players are playing community football. Thank you for providing feedback on our players and for housing them when not playing at Subiaco. I also thank our regional academy which continues to do great work in promoting regional players and preparing them for working through the talent system. As with any football program, many hands work hard to make it happen and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for the effort and dedication they have to our talent program. So, to all listed below, I thank you. Assistant Coaches Josh Leunig, Ryan Redfern, Brent Snook and Alan Gibson

Support Staff Craig Francis, Karen South, James Claxon Talent Board Director Gary Addison Runner Matt Pannell

Strength and Conditioning James Mckee, Andy Bottega, Joel Broad and Samantha Harvey and the many wonderful assistants who go above and beyond to help our players. Thanks also to the Subiaco Executive led by President Mark Lawrence and CEO Peter Capes for again supporting the talent pathway. I made it my mission to make sure the pressure was sustained to get the club to invest and improve the facilities for the talent program which have been neglected over the last 5 years and with their hard work and that of others there is light on the horizon. I would also like to thank both Beau and Dicko from within the Senior Program who provide great support to talent and have focussed on transferring talent from the Colts system and integrating them into the Seniors. We have exciting times ahead with our local talent.

Thanks also to Stuart Berryman who was much better placed as we headed into season 2022. I know he has a great vision for continuing to grow the SFC Talent Pathway and I thank him for his support. I will look back fondly on my time with the colts at the Subiaco Football Club for giving me such a great grounding in elite coaching. I have been blessed with great people, great players and great fun. I look forward to watching the program develop and helping where I can as I embark on the next football challenge.
