How do you discover new music, art, or even restaurants? It’s something I’m always thinking about. Really I think it varies from day to day, year to year and from person to person. Maybe it’s a magazine (possibly even Submerge?), a blog, movie, or maybe it’s just by accident. One thing I know for sure, and you can’t deny, most of the time it really just has to do with what’s right in front of you.

It was very random how I discovered Widowspeak, the artist on the front cover of this issue. As I was listing their name in our calendar this spring when they played Bows and Arrows, I decided to plug their name into Google and listen to their music. I loved what I heard. What made me Google their band name over others I put in the calendar? I have no idea. For all I know it was probably their hand-drawn-looking logo or their promo photo.

After listening to their music, I only wished I had discovered them earlier so I could feature them in our issue. Luckily they are touring back through our area to play Sophia’s Thai Kitchen in Davis for the venue’s season finale show on Oct. 19. Maybe this is your first time hearing about this band, or perhaps you know them because one of their songs was featured in American Horror Story. I love discovering music from TV shows and movies. I’ve discovered quite a few bands from old Sofia Coppola films and (don’t judge me) Twilight soundtracks, as well as one of my favorite TV shows, Parenthood.

Either way, we have a really great interview with Molly Hamilton from Widowspeak starting on page 20, where she talks about embracing media exposure and how losing a band member changed their songwriting dynamic. Also, I have to mention that Submerge was the first-ever media outlet to get an inside scoop on a personal tidbit about the band. Read the interview to see what I mean.

Sometimes it’s great to discover new music through a friend, a blog, or both! Thanks to Nicholas Wray, one of our contributing photographers, that’s how I first heard of Eli and the Sound Cult. His post eight months ago about a music video that he shot called “Worst Thing” made me listen to their music for the first time.

Sometimes there’s nothing better in the world than a good pop song.

They can make you tap your feet, bob your head and even want to sing along. That’s how I felt when I first heard Eli and the Sound Cult.

They have this sound I truly enjoy: a fast, catchy and clean sound. It’s always refreshing to hear a band that doesn’t overcomplicate songs.

They really remind me of a band I like called The Strokes.

In our feature starting on page 10, you can read more about Elijah Jenkins and Jason Bove, the two members of Eli and the Sound Cult, as they discuss their new album, genres, and pushing/not pushing boundaries, as well as their live shows and what they want people to take away from them.

Now, do you discover a lot of art on Second Saturday, or at art festivals or special events? I know I do. Quite a few years ago I discovered Rob-O and his sugar skulls (featured on our back cover this issue). The colorful pieces of work, the uniqueness of size and media, plus SKULLS (who doesn’t just love skulls?) made me want to feature his work in Submerge for years now. However, the timing just wasn’t right on our end. I always knew in the back of my mind that I wanted to feature Rob-O right before Día de los Muertos. This year ended up being the perfect time, not only because you can you see his work at the California Museum in Sacramento all the way until Jan. 5, 2014, but you can also attend a hands-on workshop taught by Rob-O himself on Oct. 26 for just $20 (sign up at Californiamuseum.org).

We have two other features that I wish I had more room to talk about. One takes you through our assistant editor Mandy Pearson’s experience jumping 8,000 feet out of an airplane Oct. 3 with none other than Red Bull Air Force top dog Sean MacCormac right before the Capital Airshow at Mather Airport. Mandy has had what I would classify as one hell-of-a past couple years, to say the least. Her skydiving feature is an enlightening take on life and straight-up living as we know it. Dive in (luckily with no fear for you) starting on page 18. If you get inspired, look into our sidebar info and perhaps get some “wings” of your own.

Last but not least, Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork week took place Sept.

23 to Sept. 29, and we at Submerge wanted to look back at the events that took place to celebrate our region and its lovely agriculture. Read up starting on page 14 as the region tries to be known as more than just the home of the Sacramento Kings.

Ginger-Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Pumpkin carving is one of the strangest traditions. We have manipulated thousands of years of agriculture to accommodate our desire to turn squash into artwork. As you’re carving your pet’s face into your Halloween pumpkin, take a moment to consider the benefits of the excess. Pumpkin seeds are discarded more often than not, but did you know they have nearly 10 milligrams of zinc per 3.5 ounces? Pumpkin seeds are loaded with phosphorus, magnesium, iron and copper and provide an excellent source of vitamin K. On top of the health benefits, they are incredibly easy to cook. Place your pumpkin seeds into a bowl of melted butter and coat, then add an equal measure of salt, plus a hefty dash of ground ginger and about half that much of orange zest. Once thoroughly coated, lay them on a greased cooking sheet and bake for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. It’s easy, it’s impressive and it’s tasty.

Up next is Midtown Arts Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19, with this year’s theme being “Creative Connections.” The free family-friendly event, brought to you by the Midtown Business Association, will bring together local artists and arts organizations with craft vendors, performers and kid-friendly/ interactive art activities. There will be a fashion show where a variety of local Midtown boutiques will showcase their fall fashion lines, a craft beer garden highlighting regional and artisanal beers and of course a music stage, which will be proudly sponsored by Submerge. The lineup of local bands set to play the Submerge stage is sick! Clay Nutting (of LowBrau and Launch fame) put it together, and we’re stoked to announce that Contra, 50 Watt Heavy, Gentleman Surfer and DLRN will grace all those in attendance (organizers are expecting 3,000 to 4,000 thousand people!) with their presence.

Artists Jose Di Gregorio (whom you may have read about in our last issue?), Micah Crandall-Bear and Kim Squaglia created a mural that will serve as the backdrop for the festival. Also look forward to performances from Creative Connection Arts Academy, Sacramento Ballet, Step1 Dance and Fitness, and a Macbeth excerpt from Capital Stage actors. Locally based progressive/post-hardcore band A Lot Like Birds, who are finally starting to blow up and not be so local anymore, are readying the release of a new full-length album via Equal Vision Records on Oct. 29. The record, titled No Place, is a sprawling, epic piece of work. Equally chaotic/haunting and enchanting/melodic, it’s a mind-bending album that takes listeners on a wild ride.

Thematically, the album revolves around a single concept, exploring the emotions behind rooms in a home. Ben Wiacek, one of the band’s guitarists, elaborated in a press release by stating, “The idea was to identify the emotional dichotomy of the ‘home’ experience; the home is a place of serenity and/or a place of chaos. You’ll notice this album is much darker but more focused than anything we’ve done before, and I hope we achieved something that will be considered important and relevant to a lot of people’s lives.” The album was recorded by Kris Crummett, who also worked on the band’s last album, Conversation Piece. Sonically speaking, No Place sounds incredible; the boys in ALLB were wise in re-enlisting Crummett to man the boards. In late October, the band will embark on a headlining tour featuring openers HRVRD, Night Verses and My Iron Lung, but first they are wrapping up their current tour with Lions Lions and InDirection, which will hit The Boardwalk in Orangevale on Friday, Oct. 18. Local jam band extraordinaire ZuhG is taking their annual music festival on the road this year. ZuhGFest 2013 will go down from Oct. 18 – 20 along the scenic North Yuba River, right next to a little town called Downieville, Calif. off Highway 49 at the Sierra Shangri-La Resort. “My family has been going to Shangri-La for decades every year for a week’s vacation,” ZuhG frontman Bryan Nichols explained to Submerge. “They’ve been going probably 40-plus years, and I’ve never missed a year since I’ve been born.” New caretakers took over the resort a couple years ago and really liked Nichols’ band, so naturally he talked them into letting him throw a music festival there. Nichols and his buddy, Franco, went to work booking a shit-ton of awesome Sacramento bands that were down for the trip—mixed with a healthy dose of touring bands—for what is going to be an incredible three days of music in a beautiful, remote location. Local faves like Massive Delicious, James Cavern, Justin Farren, Island of Black and White, EGG and many others will join musical forces with Jelly Bread, Mark Sexton Band, and Crush from Reno; Red Rose from Wisconsin, The Sunrise Review from West Virginia, Glimpse Trio from the Bay Area, Pine Street Ramblers from Nevada City and Stable Hands from the Central Valley. The audio on the scrambled porn channels came in well enough, but the picture could be a bit wavy and the colors were all rainbow.

Fortunately for me, my penis brain eventually figured out that if you changed the channel up and down quickly, the picture would clear up for a bit. Word spread fast at my high school and many a horny teen found themselves alone at night in front of their TVs, bathed in a rainbow glow of hedonism.

So it went, until a bunch of nerds invented the Internet and AOL brought us real, unscrambled porn through our computers. In the beginning, there were 14.4k dialup modems and things moved pretty slow. Pictures came in one line at a time from top to bottom, so it took forever to see porn. The process could take so long that you might be ready to bust by the time you finally saw a nipple. It was as if AOL were trying to create a nation of premature ejaculators.

Fortunately for us (and unfortunately for religious extremists, uptight people, anyone addicted to porn and probably the porn stars themselves), the Internet gods have made porn-hunting so much faster. Now you can see a nipple, if not a straight-up gaping butthole, in no time flat. Pictures are so last century; HD streaming video is the ticket now, and it’s made the computer the No. 1 gateway for porn.

The impacts of Internet porn have been astounding. It’s caused right-handed people to start jerking off with their left hands, so as to not dirty up their mouse with junk juice or be forced to cross streams to mouse with their left hand while they jerk with their right. But that’s hardly the weirdest thing about Internet porn.

In fact, I’m not even sure I could tell you the weirdest thing about Internet porn. You would be amazed by what you can find on the Internet.

Oddly enough, good ol’ Google won’t be the best way to navigate these dark Internet porn waters. Instead, look to the ironically named Microsoft Bing for all your porn search needs.

Just turn off the content filter, enter your kink, pull out your favorite sexual organ and get your Bing on. After all, who knows what you like better than you? Unless you forget to clear your search history between sessions, in which case, Microsoft and maybe the NSA also know that you are a disgusting pig. Now go wash your hands, you monster!

If the last 20 years of life has made me an expert on anything, it’s probably porn. My research began when I was just a young boy looking through my father’s Playboys. It was the ‘80s, and pubic hairstyles ranged from hairy to Buckwheat in a scissor-lock. In the ‘90s, we had HBO and I watched every episode of Dream On, mostly because it was a great show, but also because they showed tits on there. Even if the show had sucked, I probably would have watched it because it was softcore porn. If you want a 13-year-old boy to watch anything, tell him there will be boobs at the end.

It’s been that way since the beginning of time. Prehistoric man drew naked people on the walls of caves—or at least that’s what I was led to believe by the 1992 film classic, Encino Man. All of the great European masters painted nudes.

In the ‘50s, the so-called greatest generation was busy slappin’ pictures of pin-up girls on the sides of their planes, watching five-cent flipbook porn movies in seedy bars and jerkin’ off to Marilyn Monroe in Playboy. In the ‘60s we had nudist colonies and in the ‘70s it was adult movie theaters. The country officially had a hard-on for porn.

For almost 200 years, America tried to repress its sexual urges, but the people just couldn’t hold back any longer. Suddenly, everyone wanted to whip out their junk and do the damn thing! Fortunately, before we reached a public masturbation tipping point, we got VCRs, which brought donkey flogging and finger banging safely back into the home, where they have mostly remained to this day.

If you saw the movie Boogie Nights, you already know that VCRs and cheaper video cameras changed the porn industry in the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Production costs plummeted and the porn market was flooded with new jacks.

The old porn kingpins couldn’t keep a firm grip on the market and were pushed out by a new breed of pornographer. For the new cummers comers, story was no longer a focal point; it was just the part before the fucking.

The new formula was well received by audiences, but renting and buying porn still proved to be too embarrassing for some. Imagine their delight when cable providers started offering Pay-Per-View Playboy and Spice Channel in the ‘90s. f you think that the modern universe of pop music is composed of a homogeneous parade of sexed-up, music-industry drones, you’re probably not alone. Like an army of tongue-wagging, good-girls-gone-bad, some artists seem intent on pushing the boundaries of popular music to the brink of triviality.

For Elijah Jenkins and Jason Bove, the two members of Eli and the Sound Cult, their allegiance to the ethos of pop just might save the genre from a scourge of banality, just as long as it doesn’t interfere with their other shared passions: skateboarding, rock climbing and bread-and-butter pickles.

Drawing on a variety of sonic influences from Prince to Ween, the band’s debut album Best of Pop is an opus of sound that marries rock, soul and, of course, pop music.

“It’s kind of an amalgamation of all that stuff that we grew up listening to.” Bove says. “That spanned punk rock to metal to radio music to everything that inspired us as kids, you know, skateboarding culture and music culture.”

The two Sacramento transplants—Bove hails from Illinois and Jenkins is from Bakersfield, Calif.—realized after a chance meeting at Sacramento Pipeworks Climbing and Fitness gym that their combined talents and shared interests made for the perfect pop experiment. However, the duo isn’t looking to forge new musical trails, but rather to put out an album that provides their audience a visceral and engaging musical experience that celebrates the pop ilk.

“There are definitive things that it is not,” Jenkins says. “It is not post-anything, it’s not post-punk, it’s not trying to do anything new as much as it’s trying to exist within the walls of stuff that already exists. We’re not trying to push boundaries on this album, what we try to do is make waves within the walls that already exist.”

As a genre, pop music is exceedingly broad-based, often assimilating elements from other genres like hip-hop, dance, rock and indie, featuring accessible songs written in the verse-chorus-verse construct awash with melodic tunes and catchy hooks, and Best of Pop delivers exactly that.

“I think we push boundaries insomuch as we feel like it’s OK on one album to write a funk song, and an indie song, and a blues song, and a rock song,” Jenkins continues.

“But we’re not trying to push genre lines, we’re

just trying to say you can do whatever you want, you don’t have to be genre-specific in your music.”

“I go back to Prince as a good example,” Bove adds. “He’s pop music, but he’s not limited by pop music. That guy can do whatever he wants, so we kind of want to do whatever we want.”

Like a lot of pop music, much of the album’s inspiration draws from facet of the human condition: Love.

“We’re all chasing around boys or girls. I mean, I think that’s a large part of the pop element, too,” Jenkins says. “There’re no songs on this album that aren’t love songs, and they’re either [about] running toward it, running away from it or struggling with it. The fact that we wrote an album that’s eight love songs about five different women should be indicative of something.”

“Well, a lot of it, too, is love lost, right?”

Bove adds. “We’ve all kind of been through relationships that haven’t worked but that have brought you to a different space in life.

And then it’s trying to figure out why you’re in that space, and it’s because of your choices and your path. I wouldn’t be in Sacramento if it wasn’t for relationships.”

Continuing on this lyrical path, having recently concluded a successful Kickstarter campaign that helped the duo procure a van to take their pop party out on the road and preparing for an upcoming tour that kicks off with an album release party on Oct. 18 at Sacramento Space, Jenkins and Bove are already looking toward the future, without being bound by the trappings of their work.

Part of the band’s current aesthetic involves an engrossing live show that incorporates multi-media elements, including dynamic light installations and projected images drawing from popular culture figures syncopating in time with the beats emanating from their speakers.

“This movement is closer to a high-energy art installation,” Jenkins says. “That’s really the only sense where I feel like we’re pushing boundaries, this is an art piece, this is not a jazz ensemble.”

The duo’s genuine esteem for one another is evident, from their quip-y offstage banter to their keen ability to synthesize a singular message onstage and in the studio. Their meticulously crafted shows, like their music, is a catalyst for sparking a combustible reaction that explodes through the audience like a volcanic eruption.

“We want people to have a weird, amazing experience and walk away feeling a little changed. I want them to come away with the idea that they’ve been to a show that was well-choreographed, that was made to make them feel something emotional,” Jenkins says.

“I want people to walk away with an emotional experience, where they feel like something has been added or taken away from them.”

“I’ve definitely seen people with their mouths hanging open like they were watching somebody be killed or something they didn’t expect to see,” Bove adds.

From skateboarding around town to scaling craggy peaks, on and off tour, their personalities complement rather than collide— as the frontman and singer, Jenkins’ vociferous nature is engaging and jovial while Bove’s quiet, introspective reserve reverberates perfectly in time as softly caresses the strings on his bass.

“I think we like the constraints of having to work within what two people can do.

Essentially we have eight limbs that we can work with and that’s it,” Jenkins explains. “But the nice thing is that we only have to deal with two people’s egos, two people’s schedules, two people’s desires, and we get along. Like, I’ve never been in a band where everybody gets along. We butt heads plenty of times on vision and all that, but neither one of us are purists.

We never go, ‘It has to be this way.’”

The twosome’s frenetic energy, undeniable bond and surging creativity is the perfect recipe for musical harmony, but it’s

their boyish charm and quirky sensibility that may find their empire expanding into Vlasic’s territory.

“Pickles are fantastic. I might start pickling everything,” Jenkins beams. “Apparently you can pickle grapes; red wine vinegar, Sriracha and grapes. I had them at Total Wine; they were fantastic. The sweetness of the grape against the vinegar made them savory and the Sriracha made them spicy. Imagine a savory, spicy fruit.”

Eli and the Sound Cult’s Music and Pickle Emporium, now that has Prepare to get your pants charmed a nice ring off when Eli and the Sound Cult celebrate their record release at to it.

The Sugar Skull Master Rob-O Tells All About His Sweet, Sweet Art Words Jenn Walker

I

t is not uncommon for Rob-O to buy 900 pounds of sugar at once. In fact, in a recent phone conversation, he stated nonchalantly that he had done just that about a week before.

Why all the sugar? Rob-O makes sugar skulls from his home studio in Elk Grove as an art. He makes a lot of them, and sometimes he makes them big, as in, 35 pounds of big. If you are going to go for it, you might as well go all the way, right?

For those who aren’t familiar, the tradition of making sugar skulls stems from the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, which, in English, means Day of the Dead. On Nov. 1 and 2 of every year, people celebrate Día de los Muertos by visiting the graves of deceased family members and friends, and creating altars in their memory.

The altars are showered with gifts of all kinds, like tequila bottles, toys, candies, photographs, flowers—anything the now-deceased would have enjoyed—and decorated with marigolds and sugar skulls, or “calaveras de azúcar” in Spanish.

Muertos altar are small and cutesy. They are colorful, made of edible chocolate or sugar, and traced with frosting lines that shape the eyes, nose, mouth and several small flowers or designs.

Rob-O first began making sugar skulls in a similar fashion five years ago. Since then, however, he has taken it to another level.

Like the traditional sugar skull, Rob-O’s are made out of pure sugar. From scratch. Don’t get too excited, though. As delectable as they may look in the photos, you can’t eat them. Rob-O’s sugar skulls are not only encased in handmade oak shadow boxes, they are covered with a moisture barrier for the sake of longevity. And he is willing to bet they can last more than 500 years. You probably don’t want something like that in your system.

The first part of the process, forming the blank skull, is straightforward. It’s kind of like making a sandcastle, he explains. You mix sugar, meringue powder and water, and pour the mixture into molds. Then you flip them out of the

mold and let them air dry. If he really puts in the time, Rob-O can make as many as 130 plain white sugar skulls in a day.

The real artistry is what follows, though, when he decorates each skull with royal icing.

Each skull is elaborately masked with a maze of intricate, bright, filigree-like frosting lines, swirls and dots, many adorned with massive frosting headdresses, and each completed with a pair of glass jewel eyes.

“The eyes have to have a shimmer,” Rob-O says.

Some of his most intricate line work can be found in his series called Siblings, in which the skulls are paired into duos, and Feng Shui, where the skulls are partnered in groups of three, each representing Earth, fire or water. The work is so ornate the noses and mouths can get lost in the details on first glance.

Arguably one of his most impressive pieces, though, is the sugar skull he designed for a San Francisco Giants fan. The Golden Gate Bridge and two baseballs are perfectly absorbed into the

headdress, in addition to the Giants’ “SF” logo.

Not bad for someone who doesn’t watch baseball.

After his sugar skulls are painted, Rob-O airbrushes each one with food coloring, covers them with a moisture barrier, and seals them in a shadow box. Aside from the glass jewels, the handiwork is 100 percent him. At most, he might make eight to 10 of these custom-made skulls in a month.

Rob-O began making sugar skulls as an emotional release. It started five years ago, when his mother passed away. It hit him, hard. Little did he know what was ahead.

As he says in hindsight, “from tragedy comes greatness.”

He pauses. When it comes to his story, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. After his mother’s passing, Rob-O was looking for something positive to fill the void. With his wife’s encouragement, he decided to make a Día de los Muertos altar in his garage to celebrate his mother’s life, and invited 30 friends over to decorate sugar skulls.

His first attempt at making sugar skulls was not unlike most people’s first attempts.

The frosting wasn’t thick enough, and it had a watery consistency.

“Why do all of our sugar skulls look so sad?” he remembers asking. “It was heartbreaking.”

His skills improved the following year, however, and three weeks after celebrating Día de los Muertos for the second year in a row, Rob-O was still decorating leftover sugar skulls.

He had no idea what to do with them afterward, until his wife suggested that he try selling them during Second Saturday. He had made art all of his life, but had never been pushed to sell it up to that point. As it turned out, people liked his work, so he kept making them. Before he knew it, making sugar skulls quickly evolved from observing a tradition to an art form. He started airbrushing his skulls with food coloring, and detailing them with dots.

Next thing he knew, one of his friends, a tattoo artist, challenged him to make a giant sugar skull out of Styrofoam that he could put in the tattoo shop.

He accepted the challenge. But, he wanted to keep the sugar skull tradition true.

“Celebrating [Día de los Muertos] for my mom, decorating real sugar skulls, and understanding the level of importance of what a real sugar skull is, I didn’t want to make it out of Styrofoam,” he says. “I wanted to make it real.”

So he went home and made a mold for a 35-pound sugar skull. By the time he was done, he realized he didn’t have a plan for getting it mounted onto a wall. Fortunately, his construction background kicked in, and Mija, Rob-O’s first large sugar skull, was a success.

Since then he has made three more 35-pound skulls, and one 55-pound skull.

Still, some people just needed to see his work in a shadow box to be convinced that his work was “art.” When he first started pushing his sugar skulls in the art world, he often heard people refer to his work as a “craft” instead of an “art.”

That’s when he began putting each of his pieces into shadow boxes. The reaction was hard to miss.

As he quickly began to notice, “once framed, the perspective changed.”

“Once we framed them, it was a whole different world,” he elaborates. “People took them into a whole different light, another seriousness.”

Fast forward five years, and Rob-O now makes sugar skulls year-round, selling each skull or set of skulls in shadow boxes. He is regularly commissioned for his work. Take a look at one of his pieces and you will understand why.

And, his work has gotten plenty of notice in the public eye. Last year, his work was featured in 46 different shows. He has shown his work at Sacramento’s All-American Tattoo Festival at the Convention Center, as well as at the San Francisco Symphony’s Día de los Muertos celebration. Last year he made it into the Sausalito Art Show, and Mija also won “Valley Sculpture of the Year” at the state fair. Currently, 11 of his pieces are being shown at the California Museum, including one of his 35-pound sugar skulls, alongside an interactive Day of the Dead community altar.

In his spare time, Rob-O also visits schools to teach the history of Day of the Dead, and how to make sugar skulls. In fact, as we spoke on the phone, he was making 750 blank sugar skulls to take to a cemetery for a similar demonstration.

His next plan is to donate a piece to a museum in remembrance of his mother. That way she can be celebrated every day, he says.

And, eventually, Rob-O hopes to make the world’s largest sculpture. Lord knows how much sugar he will need for that.

On Oct. 19, Rob-O will be a featured artist at the Sugar Skull Festival in San Jose, Calif. acramento has long struggled with its reputation as a cow town. But with foodies the world over regarding our city as a culinary epicenter because of its proximity to rich harvests and ranches and its multitude of highly rated restaurants, Sacramento has decided to embrace its agricultural ties and plant its cow town flag proudly in the soil by proclaiming itself America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital and hosting its firstever Farm-to-Fork week.

The festivities organized by the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau involved largescale events. The week kicked off Sept. 23 with the Cattle Drive from the Tower Bridge up J Street, followed by Legends of Wine on Sept. 26 featuring local wines handpicked and poured by internationally recognized culinary experts Daryl Corti and David Berkley on the west steps of the Capitol building. The Farm-to-Fork Festival on Capitol Mall followed on Sept. 28, and the event culminated in the Tower Bridge Dinner on Sunday, Sept. 29. Additionally, restaurants all over town hosted their own farm-to-fork showcase events.

This was no easy undertaking, but well worth the effort, said Sonya Bradley, Chief Marketing Officer for the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“For the farmers, ranchers, food producers, chefs and restaurants, it’s their livelihood,” she says. “While our role as a sales and marketing organization is to give this movement some context and push it to the forefront so that one day saying, ‘America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital’ becomes as natural as saying, ‘Sacramento Kings.’”

On a picture-perfect Saturday in late September along Capitol Mall, with views of the Capitol and Tower Bridge flanking the rows of booths and food trucks, the Farm-to-Fork Festival

was in full swing. Among the neatly lined-up booths were California Restaurant Association, Lucky Dog Ranch, Del Rio Botanical, Passmore Ranch, Full Belly Farm, Nugget Market, Save Mart (yes, they source local produce, too!), and the Dairy Council of California, who showed up equipped with a mobile dairy classroom.

Among a sea of marketing materials promoting local businesses, Downtowngrid’s booth also handed out a flyer listing all the farmers’ markets in Sacramento. There is at least one farmers’ market cropping up somewhere nearby every day of the week, making it easy for people to buy local, seasonal food directly from farmers and other vendors who produce food within the proverbial stone’s throw. I wondered: did cities elsewhere in the country have as many proximal farms and farmers’ markets available to conscientious consumers?

Josh Nelson, whose stepfather is Randall Selland, owner of The Kitchen, Selland’s Market Café and Ella Dining Room and Bar, says that Sacramento has been America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital long prior to its recent self-proclamation.

Since opening The Kitchen 22 years ago, they’ve always shopped at the farmers’ markets for the ingredients used to create their menu. They weren’t philosophically locavores initially, but he explains that our region’s best-tasting food comes from the farmers’ market due to its freshness.

Sacramento is centered within the largest piece of Class 1 soil in the world, in a longitudinal belt running in California from Bakersfield to Redding, while also being uniquely positioned surrounding two rivers. For this reason, he feels that we’re just inherently the capital of farm-to-fork fare.

“Food and agriculture is what we are. The health and environmental benefits of eating locally grown food are now being nationally recognized,” he says, making this a strategic time to make the claim.

Feeling strongly that to tout Sacramento as America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital would promote the region and the already-popular concept in a positive way, the Selland family spent their time, money and resources to create the America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital logo and secure the handles on various social media outlets and the Web address (Farmtoforkcapital.com), wrote the resolution, and with the help of Patrick Mulvaney of Mulvaney’s B&L in the final meeting, pitched the idea to the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau and Mayor Kevin Johnson about one year ago.

They don’t think they deserve full credit for this endeavor by any means, though.

“What makes [the movement] special is that it’s not a single effort— it doesn’t work if it’s one person, one voice, one restaurant,” Nelson explains.

It’s clear the community has shown its support.

that this initiative has an army of locavores backing it.

According to Nelson, becoming America’s Farm-toFork Capital isn’t the flip of a switch, it’s an endless walk down an arduous path that involves not just marketing and politics, but grassroots participation.

But thanks to the reinforcement of the local government and the SCVB, the platform is in place for the hardworking community to continue to roll out the initiative, the benefits of which are both social and economic.

“It isn’t all about the festival,” he says. “It’s just one week that is part of a year-round effort, and the festival is to celebrate the region.”

Sonya Bradley agrees. “[Farm-to-Fork Week] allows us to tell a very real and authentic Sacramento story,” she says. “This region was built on agriculture—just drive 20 minutes south to the Delta and see the rows upon rows of pear orchards, or north along I-5 and see the acres of rice fields… It’s such an integral part of our heritage.”

T

he life-changing question from my good friend and publisher arrived during one of our regular back-and-forth editing email sessions: Melissa: Would you, if I could even set it up, be interested in skydiving to write a story with the Red Bull skydivers? They could possibly send one of our writers to fly with them at the Capital Airshow kickoff, and it’s all filmed and stuff. I’m guessing you might have to see if you could get off work and I don’t know if that’d be a problem... but it might be TOTALLY worth it.

Me: Um, I am SO down to skydive! Like WAY down. I probably wouldn’t have been before cancer, but I’m way into saying yes to everything these days. :) And that’s how I found myself, on Oct. 3, just one year and 16 days after finishing treatment for Stage IIB cervical cancer, strapped to Red Bull Air Force pilot and Skysurfing world recordsetter Sean MacCormac as we prepared to make a tandem skydiving jump above the California Capital Air Show.

Six of us, including the plane's pilot, another tandem team and fellow RBAF Pilot Jeff Provenzano, got real close real fast as we crammed into a teeny-tiny Cessna and began climbing to 8,000 feet over the Sacramento Mather Airport. Before I knew it, the pilot was giving us the five-minute warning. “OK,” Sean said from behind me, as he tightened the straps connecting us and handed me my goggles. “Now you can’t go anywhere without me.”

Can we talk for a minute about what these guys actually do? The RBAF essentially

travel the world looking for the next airborne thrill. Jumping out of a plane in a kayak, parachuting into stadiums, BASE jumping off buildings, zooming across the sky at 125 mph in a wingsuit—it’s all in a day’s work. In fact, while doing a little fact-checking for this story, I stumbled across my tandem partner’s IMDB.com page, which credits him with stunt appearances in Iron Man 3 and The Hangover Part III. Not only that, the RBAF was instrumental in this little event known as dropping Felix Baumgartner from the edge of space last October. I wasn’t just jumping with the best-of-the-best; I was putting my life in the hands of some of the most fearless dudes on the planet!

Still, by all rights, I should have been scared out of my mind. This is the same girl who, at 8 years old, insisted on riding the county fair Tilt-AWhirl alone, against everyone’s better judgment.

I could handle it, I insisted. I was no baby. But once I was strapped in and experienced the first whirl-and-tilt, I screamed bloody murder and the gruff carnie had to stop and let me and my utter embarrassment off the ride.

I hadn’t thought of that experience for more than 20 years, but I was sure it would play itself out again at some point on this skydiving adventure—maybe when I was stepping into the harness, or climbing into the plane, or creeping up to altitude, or shuffling to the open door and “dangling” (Sean’s words) my legs over the ledge— and I’d call the whole thing off, riding the plane safely back to Earth, my embarrassment trailing behind me like a spent parachute.

even as my legs dangled out that open door over nothing but blue sky and a few brownish-green squares of Sacramento Valley farmland. Or when Sean expertly leaned us out, then in, then heaved us out the door.

Our 30 seconds of free-fall went something like this: Wind. FEAR. Wind. Can’t. Breathe. HOLY SHIT I’M FLYING. There’s Jeff with the GoPro on his helmet—reaching out his hands? OK! I’ll grab ‘em! I AM TOTALLY DOING THIS! Can Jeff see that I can’t breathe? Seriously, I can’t breathe, but this is fucking amazing! Sudden inhale. I can breathe! What are those hand motions between Jeff and Sean? Jeff’s letting go! Oh! Right! It’s time to pull the chute! I’m supposed to reach behind to his right hip and find the pull…where’s the…oh! Got it!

A slight upward jolt, and…

Poof. The two of us were floating in the most serene, silent, bluest sky.

“Holy shit I just jumped out of a PLANE!” The 20-year skydiving vet with about 18,000 jumps under his belt (who probably does jumps like these as warm-ups) chuckled as he expertly navigated the chute.

“Reach up,” he coaxed. “Pull down on that cord there, see it?”

We made a slight downward-right turn as I pulled. Then he took over, and my hands returned to the straps on my shoulders.

“You know, you’re fully supported, so you can let go of your straps. Put your arms out. Fly!” My arms shot straight out to the side as if I were a 5-year-old playing “airplane” in my living room. “Woooooooo!” I yelled (even though I promised myself I wouldn’t). I could tell he was focusing on our descent. The winds were a gusty 23 mph. Once they reached 25, the team would call off the rest of the day’s jumps.

“Do you want to try a hard turn?” Sean asked.

I hesitated for a second then acquiesced. With one quick, fluid movement, we swooped in a downward, stomach-dropping radial arc.

In a rush of adrenaline, I found myself blurting, “So, I had cancer last year. And I figured if I could make it through treatment, I could probably jump out of a plane. I mean, I kind of faced anyone’s worst fears and lived to tell about it, right? So, um, thanks. For making this experience so incredible.”

It was the truth! For adrenaline junkies, these guys were some of the most relaxed, genuine, fun-loving gentlemen I’d ever met.

Soon we were landing—a bit harder than planned, due to a wind gust that dragged us a few feet in the dry field—and Jeff was pulling me off the ground and throwing me a high-five.

“Mandy! You just jumped out of a plane!”

Hell yes, I did. And I was ready to go again.

Maybe this time I’d even attempt those flips Sean tried to talk me into while he was suiting me up.

Who was this fearless carefree adventurer, and what did she do with the girl who couldn’t ride the Tilt-A-Whirl? The girl who always volunteered to stay in the boat and man the flag during wakeboarding sessions?

Transformational, even.

Right before we jumped, I felt Sean take in a deep, yoga-style breath. I leaned back and yelled the only question I could think to ask.

“Do you still get nervous?”

“Sometimes,” he yelled back. “But not today.

Not for jumps like this.”

f it were 1921 and you heard at random that Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas were coming to town, you might lock your doors in fear of being mowed down by a Tommy gun at the hands of two savage and depraved, gin-crazed hoods. But of course it’s not 1921, it’s 2013! And Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas would be none other than Widowspeak, the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based, selfascribed purveyors of “cowboy grunge” and “heartland rock.” Their forthcoming EP, The Swamps, continues along the path paved by Almanac, which, released on Captured Tracks in January 2013, was Widowspeak’s first output as a two-piece.

For their latest, Hamilton’s airy vocal delivery (reminiscent of and oft-compared to Hope Sandoval) is appropriately pervasive throughout The Swamps, which floats ethereally through oaks and bogs of a Southern landscape they’ve driven countless times on tour. And Thomas—not to be construed as second fiddle, by any means— deftly applies an understated Western handle to the song craft, carving a distinctive niche for Widowspeak’s music and allowing them to subtly separate from the more obvious comparisons to Cults and the aforementioned Mazzy Star.

And life as a tandem is good. Time in the van of late has been spent listening to Tropicalia compilations of the ‘60s and ‘70s, Os Mutantes and the likes of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood. Having just played Austin City Limits the week before, Hamilton and Thomas are currently taking a little break in Texas’ fabulous lone freak harbor, Austin. Hamilton, in fact, was awaiting a guest bartender shift at Mohawk’s later that night (“I’ve only bartended twice in my life, and I was really terrible both times”) when she took a little time to catch up with Submerge.

So The Swamps EP is your second release in less than a year—you’ve been real busy, I have to assume.

We did a three-month-long tour starting with South By [Southwest], and were gone until midway through June and then did another three-week support tour; the EP kind of just happened ‘cause we were cooped up in the car all the time. I was doing a lot of writing trying to think of what our next record was going to sound like. And even though we haven’t made headway on that record, we realized we had these songs that weren’t necessarily made for the LP but were their own cohesive idea… A lot of them were about driving through the South, but honestly I was motivated a little bit about not wanting to live in New York anymore.

You grew up in Tacoma, Wash. right? Do you miss the wide open spaces of the West Coast after having lived in New York for a while?

I definitely miss seeing any semblance of natural environment. There are amazing things about New York, but I think what draws me to a place is looking out the window and seeing a tree, or a cactus, or a mountain. I’ve lived there for seven years, and it’s not like I’m turning my back on it, but I’m keeping my ears open for wherever…[maybe] someplace you can actually afford to be a creative person.

Prior to Almanac, Michael Stasiak—who was a founding member—had left the band, which ultimately made Almanac something of a reinvention of the group.

Basically our entire songwriting process changed.

I would imagine there must have been some general strife in losing your band mate, so was there greater ease in the whole process of putting Swamps together since it’s been just you and Robert for some time?

Definitely. With Almanac it’s not that we were rushed or were even rushing ourselves; it was kind of wanting to prove that we could do it. We wanted to make a record. So when Michael amicably decided he didn’t want to be in the band anymore, we were like, “Well we’re gonna do it! It doesn’t matter!” And with The Swamps, we’d been touring a lot and had fallen into a good routine, writing in hotel rooms, working really well together. When I first met Rob we had to write together, and the band was fun, but we didn’t really expect anything out of it. I didn’t expect to have this rapport in writing with him that I do now.

– Molly Hamilton, Widowspeak I read an interview where you embraced the exposure you’ve received from having “Harsh Realm” featured in American Horror Story, which I think is the right way to feel about it.

Do you find it interesting how the furthering of technology and the scope of online media and so forth has made the concept of “selling out” kind of antiquated?

I think there’s always tasteful ways to go about doing it, and then there’s ways that you can just feel in the pit of your stomach are not a good representation of you or your band.

The thing with synching is that we didn’t realize how much money was in that sort of thing. We didn’t even realize we’d get paid for it—and we haven’t gotten much—but so many people are watching and so many people are getting exposed to the soundtracks… I’ve seen

so many bands get the attention they deserve because of random spots. Shows aren’t the evil behemoth people think they can be, and I don’t think commercials are by default, [either].

I think mainstream media these days has the capacity to be a lot more hip than when we were kids. I’m 30, and I don’t remember hearing anything cool in commercials or on network television when I was younger.

A lot of musicians I’ve respected have done commercials. I heard a Joanna Newsome song in an HSBC ad. Kurt Vile is in a couple commercials. In an interview he said something like, “Hey, I have a family.” And it’s true. It’s a job, and I don’t know if it’s fair for anybody who’s not in that position to say you

have to stick to some sort of antiquated idea of “musicians don’t do this.”

I’m curious: Does the lameness of Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas have anything to do with Rob going by Robert Earl Thomas?

[Laughs] Kind of a little bit. On the one hand, he’s actually Robert Earl Thomas III, and his dad goes by Rob. But also, he makes a ton of jokes whenever Matchbox 20 gets on the radio.

Like, “Hey guys, this is me! I’m killin’ it!” And anytime it’s 3 a.m. he’ll bust into song.

Now permit me to ask a personal question I don’t know the answer to… Are you and Rob a couple?

[Pauses, laughs.] It’s funny, we’ve actually never been asked that in an interview. Yes.

We’ve actually never told any media, and it doesn’t matter if it’s out there. It’s funny because we were always wondering when somebody would ask us. But it’s a relatively new development; we weren’t when we started. I think through the process of recording the last [couple] records, we just kinda started seeing each other. I don’t know if it’s like chicken-or-the-egg of being so intertwined creatively, but I feel like we probably could’ve continued making records if we weren’t [involved]; but I can’t even imagine it because so much time has been spent in this band that it’s kind of become my life.

Widowspeak headlines the Season Finale at Sophia’s Thai Kitchen in Davis on Saturday, Oct. 19. Pure Bathing Culture and Vikesh Kapoor will also be there for the 21-and-over show.

The grindhouse Two Captains, One Boat Captain Phillips Rated R

Words James barone Tom Hanks is one remarkable dude. He’s managed to become one of the most successful and lauded film actors on the planet, even though he doesn’t have the gravitas of Denzel Washington, nor the looks of Brad Pitt. He’s just a dude—like, a dude like you, dude.

But you know he’s not like you, because he can co-star in a film with a volleyball and still be nominated for an Oscar.

Sure, he’s remarkable, but the fact that he’s so relatable is why he’s so perfect to play a real-life character like Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama, who was kidnapped

by Somali pirates while transporting cargo around the Horn of Africa in 2009. Phillips is an everyman thrust into an almost unimaginable scenario. Who better than Tom Hanks to portray this kind of role on the big screen? Answer: no one. And Captain Phillips is proof of that.

The film opens in Vermont as Phillips prepares to leave his family once again for Oman, from where he and the crew of the Maersk Alabama will depart for Djibouti. As he drives himself to the airport, he converses with his wife about how “the world has changed.” We then cut to a dusty village in Somalia, a stark contrast to Phillips’ lush, green, upper middle-class life in New England. Four young men are recruited by a warlord to take part in a pirating mission: Bilal (Barkhad Abdirahman), Najee (Faysal Ahmed), Elmi (Mahat M. Ali) and Muse (Barkhad Abdi), all of whom make their motion picture debuts. We see them gear up in rickety boats and set off to sea in search of plunder.

Once again, we cut back to the Maersk Alabama, a ponderously huge ship with countless containers of goods piled high and equipped with a well-trained crew and plenty of technological bells and whistles. Captain Phillips, though it is a story of one man’s heroism in the face of a terribly frightening situation, also plays quite effectively with the haves versus the have-nots in our “changing world.” Director Paul Greengrass and company use this dichotomy to paint a human picture of the villains in this story (i.e.

the pirates), and in doing so give a soul to a film that could have just been a very good action film.

One of Captain Phillips’ most striking cinematic features is its documentary-like intimacy. As Phillips speaks to his wife in the car in the beginning of the film, the camera gets in close—so close you can almost count the pores in Hanks’ cheek. This technique is carried on later as the pirates attempt to storm the ship, and Phillips and his crew grapple with imminent danger. It makes for a gripping (and sometimes dizzying) viewing experience, placing the viewer in the action as if it’s actually happening. And in this case, it actually did.

Greengrass plays up the suspense of the situation marvelously.

As Muse searches the engine room for the Alabama’s hidden crew, extraneous soundtrack is omitted. Tight close-ups on cowering crew members are intercut with Muse’s predatory gaze as he grips tight his AK-47 and his flashlight stabs into the muggy darkness.

It’s claustrophobic to the point where it’s almost unbearable.

Though the suspense is riveting, the performances of Hanks and Abdi are what provide the most fireworks. The two are great at portraying the game of cat and mouse that takes place between Phillips and Muse. Both characters are sharp—especially Muse, who isn’t an easy mark for Phillips’ tricks. And while the two are brought together in an extraordinary circumstance, neither actor allows his role to become a caricature. Both Muse and Phillips are imbued with an underlying vulnerability that belies their takecharge attitudes. While you’ve probably come to expect this from Hanks, newcomer Abdi doesn’t shrink next to his superstar co-star.

Muse can be ruthless, sure, but he’s also a dreamer. He dreams of a better life, perhaps in America. With his drive, cleverness and ambition, you’d imagine that he probably could have made a good life for himself in the States, too. By the end of the film, Abdi might even make you wish Muse could have. That’s perhaps the real tragedy of Captain Phillips.

Expect this film to at least be a part of the conversation for the Academy Awards, and you can safely bet that Abdi’s name will be mentioned when the Best Supporting Actor nods are announced.

Wilson has every right to be jealous.

As of this writing, our government is still embroiled in a brutal shutdown. In the couple of weeks since our Congress thought it would be a good idea to close up shop instead of actually doing their jobs and coming to an agreement on a budget, it’s been chaos in the street. Brother has turned against brother. Our greatest cities have burned to the ground. A voracious zombie outbreak has decimated our population without a government response…

OK, none of these things have happened. For many of us, it’s probably business as usual.

More than likely, you still have to get up, go to work, get the kids ready for school, bathe (unfortunately). The government shutdown probably hasn’t affected you all that much. But if you think it’s not that big of a deal, you’re wrong. The government shutdown may hinder your access to new craft beer.

I know! You’re probably freaking out as much as I am. You may never have heard of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (or TTB) before, but this tiny arm of the Treasury Department has an extremely important job.

It is responsible for approving new breweries, labels and recipes.

It’s almost my favorite time of year. Sure, the holidays are great and all. It’s awesome to spend time with friends and family and stuff my face guilt-free (not that I feel that guilty about it the rest of the year), but the real prize of the colder months is the release of winter seasonals. I’m not sure where I’d be without Lagunitas’ Brown Shugga’ or the true jewel of beers, Anchor Steam’s Christmas Ale. I could live without them and their ilk, sure, but who would want to?

It’s not difficult to see that craft brewing has become a pretty big deal in America.

Sacramento alone boasts Ruhstaller, Hoppy, New Helvetia, Track 7 and River City brewing companies, as well as others. The surrounding area is also bustling with the craft beer craze, and new breweries are opening in Northern California as well as all over the country all the time.

Though craft brewing is nothing new, its recent prominence has left Americans hungry for more. This is a good thing, because for a long time American beer sucked. Like in many other areas of commerce, we’d fallen behind. Foreign beers—in the same way as cars and other goods— have invaded our shores. Not by force, mind you, but simply because they’re better. Let’s face it: Guinness rules and Budweiser drools.

Every time I drink Budweiser, I get sick.

Either physically, because it always seems to give me a headache, or spiritually and emotionally, because I know deep down in my soul that drinking beer is just about the most enjoyable thing that I ever do, and I’ve just squandered one of the only joys in my life by drinking some piss-yellow swill that doesn’t even taste all that good and hardly gets me drunk. Don’t even get me started on Miller or Coors. Both those companies are even worse.

They seem more concerned with improving their cans or bottles than they do with actually making their beers potable. “Oh look! Our label makes it easy for you to tell that this beer is cold (because, like, touching the bottle is so last century).” Or, “Hey! We just made the mouth-opening wider so you can drink this shit even faster! You’ll have to if you want to ease the pain of ingesting this garbage.”

For the record, Guinness has a fancy widget in its can that makes it foam up as if you just got it poured from the draft. I realize that’s a can-gimmick also, but it’s awesome and Guinness at least puts out a tasty product.

It also never gives me a hangover or socially crippling gas.

But I’m an American, you know? I love baseball and hotdogs and underdogs and a game called football that’s not even played with your feet. I like to drive someplace when I could just have easily walked. I LOVE paying a lot of money for so-so health care. And I want beer that I can be proud of. Lucky for all of us, there are many entrepreneurial Americans out there who are giving those hoity-toity fucks in Europe a run for their euros. Not only are they fulfilling their patriotic duty by proving we can make just as good, if not better, beer than some thousand-year-old brewery operating out of a hidden-away monastery in the mountains of Austria, but they’re also helping the economy by employing people and supplying their pricier (for good reason) products to bars and restaurants from Sea to Shining Sea. So you think the government shutdown isn’t affecting you? Clearly, you’re dead wrong.

Then, of course, as of this writing, we’re just a few days away from reaching the budget deadline. And, you know, if it’s not met, the government will default on its debt, which, I’ve been told could send the country back into a terrible recession. But hey, you know, no big, right?
