Melissa welliver melissa@submergemag.com It certainly seems like there is no shortage of depressing news these days. From the television anchors who were brutally murdered last week in Virginia, to the two local jackasses who were flaunting a gun and trying to hunt down a guy live on the social media site Periscope because they proclaimed he was hanging out with one of their girlfriends (luckily they got arrested before anything bad took place); man, this world can be depressing.

If you watch or read the news it can be easy to get burnt out on society. Times like these make me grateful for what we do here at Submerge. I hope with every turn of the page we can lighten your mood with some good ol’ arts and entertainment coverage, thus reminding you there is still some good shit in this world, too.

The first step is reading about it. Then, you’ve got to get your butt out there to experience it first-hand.

A great place to start with some enlightening reads would be page 6, where you can learn about the 25th annual Chalk It Up Festival. Then, be sure to go experience the live art and music that’s taking place on Labor Day weekend at Fremont Park. Trust me, it’s beautiful to see the chalk art sidewalk transformations.

Don’t miss it, because the art does fade fast once it’s over.

Sometimes the best way to deal with stupid shit that’s in the news is to take it on in the most sarcastic way possible.

Bocephus’ column “The Optimistic Pessimist” always seems to give me a good reason to chuckle about those ever-so-eye rolling topics. On page 9 he dives into the whole AshleyMadison.com fiasco.

In this issue we have a double dose of highlighted events in the area that we think are notable to go out and see, hear, touch and taste. Check out our “Submerge your Senses” section on page 11 and page 13. Some of my favorite events coming up are Sugar Bowl’s Lake Mary Cabin Dinner Series that benefits local nonprofits, the Sac Open Studios Tour kick-off and, since nothing beats a good metal show, we highly suggest checking out Cattle Decapitation at The Boardwalk.

Sometimes a good beer or cocktail is in order to take the edge off and get you to relax. One of my favorite places in town to do that is at Elixir. They’re celebrating 10 years in business this Sept. 12, so be sure to read up on this fine local establishment starting on page 14.

There’s nothing like going to see some live music to make you turn off that TV and live in the now. Whether it’s one of your favorite bands from back in the day doing an anniversary tour (The Get Up Kids, perhaps? See page 16), or seeing a local guitarist like Adrian Bellue celebrate the release of his new album (page 20), or checking out a folk/americana festival in one of the most beautiful areas in our region, Lotus/Coloma, because American River Music Fest’s lineup is stellar (including the Shook Twins, see page 22).

Sometimes a pretty picture can also do the trick. Besides Chalk It Up and the Sac Open Studio Tour, you can also check out the artist we have featured in this issue, MJ Lindo, on page 24. This Bay Area artist has work up through Sept. 12 at Lux Quaubas Gallery in Old Sacramento.

Keep in mind that for every depressing story on the news, there are hundreds of positive stories and things to do out there in the world. Pick up Submerge every other week to help you figure out what some of those things are on the local level.

One weekend a year, hoards of artists converge upon downtown Sacramento to create hundreds of temporary masterpieces.

Their canvas: The sidewalk. Their tools: Chalk. Lots and lots of chalk. You guessed it folks, it’s time for Chalk It Up, Sacramento’s sidewalk chalk art and music festival. This Labor Day weekend (Sept. 5 to 7), marks the 25th anniversary of this gathering of local artists, musicians and community members at Fremont Park to create beautiful chalk art and a festival experience unlike any other.

“At 25 years, Chalk It Up is kind of its own force of nature. It’s just too beloved to ever go away,” executive director Jerry Perry recently told Submerge. “We often joke that even if we weren’t organizing it, the artists and public would still converge every year to create and watch the creation of the chalk art in Fremont Park!”

He’s probably right. Chalk It Up is wildly popular amongst Sacramentans, and the numbers prove it. Last year, the event drew a whopping 35,000 people over the course of the weekend. “It’s hard to believe there was a time that it didn’t exist,” Perry says of the fest. “And major props to the handful of artists back in the ‘90s that willed this event into being. What a wonderful gift and legacy they’ve passed on to us!”

To those uninitiated in the ways of Chalk It Up, it’s a free, three-day event

where local artists are invited to use chalk to create colorful works of art on the sidewalks that encompass Fremont Park, located at 1515 Q Street. Many of the “squares” are sponsored by local businesses and organizations to raise money that benefits children’s art education and activities. Community squares are for anyone and everyone to chalk up. There is always a plethora of live music, food, a beer garden for those of drinking age, activities for the kiddos and so much more.

Chalk It Up is truly a spectacle to behold, especially by the end of the weekend, when the artists are done with their squares.

The artwork is often jaw-droppingly good, and every year it seems to get better and better. Just a few of last year’s highlights included an incredibly detailed Jimi Hendrix portrait by artist Julia Flippo for sponsor 101.5 K-HITS, a Maleficent-inspired piece by artist Missy for sponsor Isabella Corsetry, and (we’re obviously biased on this one) a Submerge-sponsored double square drawing of Beavis and Butthead sitting on their iconic pink couch by artist Raymond Roberts with help from his sons Michael and Alex.

Not to be outdone by their chalk wielding visual artist counterparts, local musicians are also well represented at Chalk It Up. At least 30 regional bands are set to perform at this year’s festival

including The Brodys, Honyock, Kevin Seconds, Drop Dead Red, Wasco, Century Got Bars, The Ancient Sons, Mondo Deco, Anton Barbeau, The Phantom Jets and many others. Music runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days!

For its 25th year, the organization’s goal is to give out 25 Chalk It Up youth art grants/scholarships. Whether it’s for art materials, musical equipment, speaker or guest artist fees, transportation for arts related field trips, attendance fees to performances, museums, classes, etc., Chalk It Up gives out mini-grants in amounts up to $500 for qualified educational activities that meet their criteria. “Art and music are such a crucial part of learning how to learn,” Perry says.

“The introduction of art and music education into children’s lives actually programs the brain to more abstract thinking and comprehension. And then there’s the whole spiritual/soulful/emotional human aspect of art and music as an outlet and a language.

To nurture such profound and moving forms of expression should be considered an essential building block if not the foundation in youth education. We do what we can through our youth art grants.”

Having someone that cares about you is just the worst. I can’t believe that person even has the gall to stick by your side after all of these years. What do they want from you?!? You know how you can get them back for all of that misery? You can cheat on them!

Cheating is the best! Your spouse just keeps trying to work things out night after night, saying things like, “We’ve got to keep the family together! Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.” Who wants to hear that noise, when you can avoid that snooze fest and get some nookie? It’s a win-win, for you.

Of course, you could just break up with the person you no longer love or never loved to begin with, but that’s not fun.

There will probably be yelling and crying and more questions. Next thing you know your clothes are out on the front lawn and she is keeping the TV. Why go through that when you can just lie about everything? Life is so much easier when you’re living in a fantasy world where you get to do what you want without consequence, anyway.

That was the sales pitch, in a nutshell, for the website Ashleymadison.com.

Surprisingly, it actually worked for Avid Life Media, the people behind the site, who claim to have signed up 37 million people to cheat on their spouses. Think of it as OkCupid with shittier people, if that’s even possible. Not only did they get people (almost entirely men and a lot of fake

women) to sign up, they got a lot of them to pay $250 for the privilege of doing so.

This is crazy!

Apparently, I am not the only one to think so. Recently, hackers calling themselves the Impact Team posted information stolen from the website. Impact Team was upset that Ashleymadison.com charges its users a $19 fee to cancel their accounts and erase their information, especially since it turns out they don’t actually erase the information anyway. The hackers claim they gave Avid Life Media a chance to stop their fuckery and shut down the website before the data was released, but the company refused, and now we reap the rewards!

So far the hackers have leaked internal company emails, user email addresses, first names, billing information, IP addresses and sexual fantasies, with spectacular results. Naturally, Josh Duggar of child molestation and 19 Kids and Counting fame found time in his busy schedule of bible thumping and leading the cause to censor television to try and get him some of that away booty. He wasn’t alone. The prosecuting attorney in the Casey Anthony trial also got caught with his pants down, as did some dipshit Christian vlogger who recently blew up for scooping his wife’s pee out of the toilet to find out if she was pregnant with the baby Jesus.

Those are only three of the millions of geniuses that thought it would be a good idea to cheat on their spouses via the

Internet with their credit cards. Politicians, government employees, members of the media and many others have been found with their hands in the cookie jar. The Internet is going ape shit as people more patient than I slowly comb through all of the data released so far to see what other secrets it contains.

While the Internet gnashes its teeth for more, some of these cheaters are busy putting together a $576 million classaction lawsuit against Avid Life Media for failing to keep their information secure.

Unfortunately, the clock can’t be turned back and the world knows that these people are shit bags. I’m not really sure how this lawsuit thing is supposed to put that genie back in the bottle, especially since it’s going to keep this hack and these people in the news. Of course, these people have a history of making bad decisions so it shouldn’t really be that surprising that they would choose to sue instead of quietly skulking away.

At Ashleymadison.com they say, “Life is short. Have an affair.” They certainly have part of it right. Life is short. It’s definitely too short for you to be wasting your time talking to fake women on the Internet while you try to dodge your real life problems.

It’s also too short to be suing people because you got caught cheating. When will someone involved in this mess stop thinking with their dick/wallet and start thinking with their brain? I guess life still isn’t short enough for that.

Well, such is the case when two local MCs, Mahtie Bush and Kham Raw, joined forces recently for a hot new EP titled No Days Off. Cattle Decapitation’s North American Extinction Tour Hits The Boardwalk • Sept. 15 Practically every major magazine has been gushing about San Diego’s death-grind gods, Cattle Decapitation. Recently the band released The Anthropocene Extinction and fans are proclaiming it is the new standard for like-minded bands of the genre. And while the band’s tour schedule is completely bonkers this year in support of the new record, the band will come destroy The Boardwalk in Orangevale and all that lie in its path. One listen to “The Prophets of Loss” will make most death metal bands hang up their equipment in utter defeat.

What started in 1996 has blossomed into something much larger than fans expected, yet the band is still steadfastly dedicated to writing smart lyrics and demanding song structures that educate rather than cause random acts of violence. I

’m going to be totally transparent here and immediately profess my unabashed love for Elixir Bar and Grill.

It is hands down, bottoms up, my favorite bar in Sacramento. And I’m not alone.

It’s not that they have the best craft cocktails I’ve ever had—although they have a fairly-priced full bar with great craft and cheap beers alike on tap.

It’s not that the decor and ambiance are an expression of good taste and elegance—although it’s clean and comfortable, has Skee Ball and Big Buck Hunter, sports on flat screen TVs, a jukebox and a cozy, covered patio.

It’s not that they have the best bar food you’ll ever sink your teeth into— although the food is really goddamn good for a dive bar, and I’m consistently impressed with it.

It’s definitely not that they have clean bathrooms—although they’ve at least painted the walls a welcoming shade of grayish-lavender recently, which were previously black and covered in bad graffiti.

It’s the people. From the owners— quarrelsome but inseparably close brother and sister Christina and Curt Pow—to the staff, to the patrons; you can always be certain that you will have a great fucking time and make some new friends at Elixir.

So it’s no wonder that they’re celebrating their 10th anniversary on Sept.

12. This is not a bar reliant on gimmicks to have enjoyed its longevity, but a consistently chill place to hang out.

Curt and Christina bicker like siblings often do, but it’s clear that they are also best friends. Curt had other business ventures in mind when he conceded to opening a bar with his little sister, who had a background in the industry. For Christina, there was no question what she wanted to do. “It’s always been a dream to open a bar or a restaurant—and not only that, an office job didn’t suit me,” she says. “We come from a long line of business owners, so it’s just innate. And that’s what makes Elixir: our presence here.”

Elixir means a potion that makes you feel good, and the name was borrowed from Christina’s favorite bar in San Francisco. The auspicious location on 10th Street between S and T was secured by Curt. They rolled up their sleeves and built out the bar together.

Back in 2005 when they opened, the Fox and Goose and Old Ironsides were the mainstays in the vicinity, and the most popular bars in town were Golden Bear and Monkey Bar. There were many trials and tribulations getting Elixir off the ground. “Oh, we didn’t know what the fuck we were doing,” laughs Christina.

“We took it for granted when we opened that we’d stay open,” elaborates

Curt. “We were like, cool, we have a business … It was kind of a clubhouse at the beginning, but to a detriment. We learned that we shouldn’t be drunker than our clientele. I was relying on my sister on that one, having been a bartender previously. I was like, ‘Are you sure we should be doing shots right now?’”

“The greatest lesson we’ve learned is how to work as a team,” admits Christina.

With that knowledge acquired, Elixir seems unstoppable. While a growing number of modern, upscale, pricy, mixology-centric establishments are opening to great reviews all over Sacramento and the nation, there will always be barflies gladly occupying dive bar stools—especially in a place where you’re made to feel like Norm from Cheers.

“It’s all craft cocktails now,” says Curt. “It’s awesome that people want to make the best cocktails there are.

We’re not a craft cocktail bar. It’s not what our customers want. Occasionally they do, and if I’m inclined to, I’ll make you a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned or whatever, but for the most part, no, that’s not what we’re about. I don’t want to spend 20 minutes making you a drink. Not that I’m knocking anyone that does that, it’s just that it takes all kinds of places.

You can get a drink anywhere. I think what sets us apart is the vibe, the mood, the setting.”

The Get Up Kids buckle down for 20th Anniversary tour Words Daniel Taylor

is a notable year for The Get Up Kids. It marks the 20th anniversary of the band’s 1995 formation in Kansas City, Missouri. It also marks the 10-year anniversary of the band’s 2005 breakup following their ascent to (and subsequent self-propelled descent from) the forefront of the early-’00s emo explosion.

It seems, however, that time has healed all wounds, not just between frontman Matt Pryor and the rest of the Kids—guitarist Jim Suptic, drummer Ryan Pope, bass player Rob Pope and keyboard player James Dewees—but also between the band and their role in shaping what became one of the decade's most enduring musical styles. The band’s second album, 1999’s Something to Write Home About, is arguably the genre-defining album for what became known, for better or worse, as “emo,” a term borrowed from from the ‘90s hardcore underground and repurposed to describe the earnest, melodic, guitar-driven rock music that bubbled out of the turn-of-themillennium indie rock scene.

But The Get Up Kids never seemed comfortable in the role of torchbearer. The band followed up Something to Write Home About with a markedly different sound on 2002’s On a Wire, trading in the upbeat, bombastic sound of the band’s first two full-lengths for a more subdued, introspective approach that, both literally and figuratively for many fans, wasn’t exactly something to write home about. The band continued to explore new territory on 2004’s Guilt Show, but were again unable to shake the expectations generated by their past success, going on hiatus shortly following the album’s release before calling it quits officially in early 2005.

In 2008, the band announced a reunion tour to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Something to Write Home About the following year. That tour in turn spawned an EP and, eventually, a new full-length, 2011’s There Are Rules. The band is now preparing for a spate of both domestic and European tour dates to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary, including a stop through Sacramento, Sept. 6 at Ace of Spades. Although The Get Up Kids have worked through their past difficulties, as frontman Matt Pryor explained during a recent interview, these upcoming shows could be the band's last for awhile.

When you were first starting the band in 1995, did you ever imagine that you guys would make it 20 years?

Oh god no! [Laughs] I don’t think anybody thinks about that.

Was there a certain point, though, where you thought, “Maybe I will be doing this for a long time?”

Well I remember a point on our very first tour; we were originally just gonna go on tour then go back to school. Just take the summer off and go on tour.

But we were like, “We can do this.” And then we kind of just kept going from there.

Twenty years later, do you ever wonder what would have happened if you had said screw it and went back to school instead, or do you still think it was the right choice?

Well it’s still my job and I still like it, so you can’t really ask for much more than that. I’m not really qualified to do anything else at this point.

Do you think that it would be possible to do what you’ve done if you were starting now, or have things in the music industry changed as far as what bands can and can’t do?

I think it’s changed, but I don’t think that that’s a bad thing necessarily. I think that there’s a lot more connectivity between bands and their audience now; it’s a lot more like the small scene that we came out of in the ‘90s where everybody knew everybody and there wasn’t a difference between the band and the crowd necessarily, we were all part of the same show.

And I think that that’s kind of similar to how it is now, where you do have to have a personal connection with each of your fans and answer questions on Twitter and all that kind of stuff. I don’t know about starting a band now. It seems like, like anything, you have to learn how to adapt to the changing landscape.

Has that changed what you guys do with the band, as far as the format of putting out a record and touring to support that record? It seems like touring has sort of become more of the end itself rather than the means.

Well, I think that that’s evolving, but the players in the game, they don’t treat it like that. Like our booking agent, or promoters of different shows, want there to be some sort of angle.

– Matt Pryor, The Get Up Kids or something like that. We’ve always just kind of toured when we’re available because we have such busy schedules. But I think that that system is still in place, as far as promoters and agents go. I think don’t think people give a shit. People are just excited that you came to their town.

It’s a been a few years since you guys have put out anything new. Does that make it strange to tour? Do you have new stuff, or is it just “here’s our catalog?”

We’re treating this as more of a nostalgia show. We’re playing a lot of old songs; I mean, they’re all old songs. The last time we did a record was 2011, so even the new songs are old now.

Does that make the shows more fun, or less fun, or just the same, but in a different way?

It’s just a different way; it’s a lot less stressful. You don’t really have to make any creative decisions, you just have to pick which songs you want to play.

Was there a certain point where you, as a band, just sort of accepted that a lot of people want to hear the old stuff?

Ahhh … I guess that’s just kind of how it is. There really wasn’t any sort of “aha” moment.

Is that a bummer?

Well, you want to think that your best work is in front of you and not behind you. So in that sense, I wish that more people would give newer stuff a chance. But at the same time, I’m just stoked that they’re there at all. And if going out and playing our first records front to back will then make us enough money that we can then go do something else that’s more artistically rewarding, then I think that’s a fair trade.

You all have other projects going on, so has this become something that you do just for fun, or maybe just whenever the opportunity presents itself?

Well, and we’ve been talking about this for a couple years now, there happens to be break in people’s schedules that coincides with the 20-year thing. So it’s really more of

just, it’s our 20th birthday, and we have sort of this window of opportunity before people turn back into a pumpkin, so it’s really more a matter of scheduling than anything else.

It’s also been almost exactly 10 years since the band split up.

Did you think, at the time, that it was going to be something you were going to come back to?

Oh no, I quit. I never wanted to play with these shitheads again.

What changed?

We got away from each other for three years. I mean, bands don’t really ever break up. It’s always there somewhere, in the back of your mind. When you’ve been living in a van with four other dudes for 10 years, you should take a break, and I didn’t know how to do that. We didn’t know how to do that. The only thing we knew how to do is call it quits.

So has this sort of reset the dynamic of the band? Given you all a fresh start?

We still fight about the same shit. But now we’re mature enough to say, “OK, you’re pissing me off, I’m gonna go for a walk.” Where in the past, we’d just get drunk and fight, now we just get drunk and say we won’t talk about it any more.

What’s next for the band?

Our window of opportunity is through the end of next summer, and then Jim’s going back to school. We’re gonna go back to Europe again in the spring, and then we’re trying to figure out what we’re gonna do next summer. And then that’ll be it.

Is it sort of a “make hay while the sun’s shining” type thing, where this may be the last chance?

It’s probably one of the last times we’re gonna do a proper tour, I would guess.

Fu Guitarist / Throat Singer Takes on the World

A

drian Bellue is something of a musical warrior and well-focused global nomad. Born out of the belly of Sacramento, he’s now traveling the continent (and imminently overseas) bringing his unique brand of instrumental guitar playing and Tuvan throat singing to all those who care to bear witness. On Sept. 16 at Harlow’s, he will debut his new full-length album, Steppes, which marks a turning point in his handcrafted career as a solo artist.

“A big part of my performance is the ‘muse’ part of the music,” exclaims Bellue. “Each song has a separate story and inspiration.” Though, it’s not always a happy one in his case. The first track off the record, “Return to Dawn,” was written after losing a close friend, drummer Broughty Cole—who went missing in March 2014, only to be found dead off the banks of the Sacramento River. From that day on, Bellue drastically changed his direction in life. “I quit my job, cut the lease on my house, turned in my car and got a hippie van … loaded up, and went out on the road. I dove into the deep end.”

Through his fearless efforts in braving a boundless tour schedule, Bellue has certainly made a name for himself as a hard-working, finger-grooving freewheeler.

He skillfully incorporates aggressive slap/tap technique to the guitar, rooted in everything from world music to heavy metal to kung fu. Topping it off, the dude can beat box and throat sing at the same time! Not easy.

A fan of the hard stuff in his youth, he took to shredding on a BC Rich Warlock electric guitar. “The ‘Slayer guitar,’” laughs Adrian. “And I was the kid with long hair and the Iron Maiden shirt—the weird kid.” It was right around this time that he discovered his passion for throat singing. “In the metal community, it’s all about making crazy noises with your voice,” he adds. But once he delved into the exotic overtone style, which allows vocalists to hit up to three notes at once his taste in guttural sounds suddenly began to change. “I couldn’t listen to much metal after that.”

Years later, he attempted going to college for a guitar major only to quickly notice there was a real road ahead of him, as many of the resident collegiate pickers were more conventionally advanced.

“Everyone was good, and I wasn’t so special anymore,” he says. “So, I put down the guitar for a long time and picked up martial arts. It helped clean me up; I was kind of going on a bad path.”

NEW In time, with his newfound knack for the art of kung fu, he realized himself on his way to being a pro martial artist—that’s until he tore up his knee quite badly and underwent serious surgery. Subsequently, while on disability, a familiar road led back home for Bellue. He found himself bedridden with nothing but an old beat-up acoustic guitar this time around.

“It didn’t even have all the strings.

That’s when I started to use the guitar to create my own soundscapes,” he recalls. “It influenced me to do ‘guitar kung fu.’ I would practice hand strikes on the body, like I did on wooden dummies—only the percussion.

Martial arts are all based on rhythms and melodies, even. I started hearing the music in my head.”

Four years later, and he’s on a roll.

Having just recorded his first complete album in Montreal with producer and renowned guitarist, Antoine Dufour, Bellue has also been privileged enough to be accepted into the solo guitar community with the likes of Andy McKee, Don Ross and Thomas Leeb.

“Andy’s embraced my music and helped me work toward a path with this,” Bellue remarks. And to show his appreciation, he covers McKee’s “Ebon Coast” on his upcoming release, adding a “reggae feel” to the tune that he chiseled out while touring in Hawaii (where his island buds are in reggae bands). Don Ross’ “Dracula and Friends” makes its way into the lineup, as well, but Thomas Leeb (a.k.a. the “Groove Nazi”) beyond a doubt inspired one of the original tracks, “Dream Walker.”

“Thomas is known as the ‘rhythm and percussion guy’ since he studied in Ghana,” says Bellue. “His teacher would smack his hands with sticks if he didn’t get the rhythms right. It’s pretty militaristic how they coach their students out there. If you screw up, your instructor can lose their reputation. Last year I did a competition where Thomas was the main judge; he grilled me pretty hard on my groove, but in a constructive way.”

This eventually led Bellue to having stress dreams about Leeb in which he would wake up in the middle of the night with the taskmaster pointing at him, saying, “Don’t lose the groove!” It, in turn, stirred him to practice his own restless nocturne, so to speak. “I didn’t think I’d get away with calling the song ‘Groove Nazi,’ so, I called it ‘Dream Walker’ instead,” Bellue says.

As far as trajectory goes, Adrian Bellue is definitely forecasting to play several international dates in the near future, but his vision is: having the opportunity to travel to Tuva, which lies at the Russian steppes of the Altai Mountains. Moreover, he has determination to make a documentary film there about the pastoral throat singers of the region through an independent Kickstarter campaign. His approaching record was funded in a similar fashion by merely using his iPhone everyday—making videos and reaching out to a community of online lookers and listeners to raise his rites.

“Making money’s good, paying your bills is important, but … ultimately, that’s all just icing on the cake for me. It’s really my therapy when I can captivate someone; influence them,” he candidly says. “It’s about the person who reaches out to you and says that they love your music. Thank you. I always get the right reminder at the right time of what I’m doing.”

From performing at big venues like John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom Room, popular breweries and wineries, to doing house parties and occasionally dropping in on open-minded churches; whatever it takes to make day-to-day gigs happen, Bellue heeds the call. It’s unarguably a full-time job for the finger-style virtuoso. What’s more, he writes his own business proposals, attends trade shows to gain sponsors and extends salutations to local colleges to enlist budding photographers and videographers.

“It’s a free exchange of services and contacts,” he admits. And his advice to anyone struggling, “Build a team, because, Rome wasn’t built in a day—or by one person. I tell my friends in bands that it’s a ‘do-it-yourself mentality,’ but, a lot of the best things are made by teams. It’s all about people who are part of an active network of other people.”

On the whole, Steppes symbolizes that newness is goodness for Adrian Bellue. In fact, his Tuvan-tinged beat-boxing style (from the album’s hidden track) has been slaying crowds ever since its inception into his repertoire. He’s even made his own mother an admirer of traditional throat singing after taking her to a live show of the authentic group Huun Huur Tu, which consequently brought her to tears. The fresh direction of his tonal odyssey is that of someone dedicated to their craft on every level. When setbacks pop up, he is consciously prepared for them.

“Challenges, they come and go, and they’re different all the time,” he says. “I try to plan the next move, and always have a finger on the pulse of my career. With music, you can really go deep and pull someone’s heart strings, and you never want to close any doors. I used to be in a dark spot, and music got me out of it.”

ortland-based band Shook Twins has dubbed their sound “quirky folk.”

The adjective, in this case, does its job. As a genre, the word “folk” connotes something simple, straightforward and steeped in tradition. “Quirky” modifies that descriptor by sprinkling some uniqueness atop that tradition without bastardizing it in the process.

Shook Twins are, primarily, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, who were raised in a small town in Idaho, but packed up for Portland some years back to make a go as musicians.

They’ve carved out a solid following in the years since.

Katelyn and Laurie, who are identical twins, carry the band’s sound with their harmonies and a mix of instruments—some traditional, some not so much. In recent years they’ve fleshed out the band’s sound and added members Kyle Volkman and Niko Daoussis.

They also picked up a large golden egg in the process.

That probably sounds like a random sentence that doesn’t fit in this story. But it does belong: that golden egg that has become a key part of the band’s identity.

In 2010, Laurie saw a man with a large golden egg outside a show in Seattle, so she asked the guy what the deal was. He told her a lady had given it to him and told him to sign it and pass it on.

“Pass it to me, then!” Laurie said. The man signed it and gave it to her, and she kept it in her home for a year before she suddenly had the glorious idea of turning it into a giant egg shaker. She poured popcorn kernels into the tiny hole at the top of the egg, transforming it into an instrument.

And then she stuck a sticky contact microphone on the egg and started hitting it like a drum. She was able to create kick drum sounds and snare drum rim shots. The giant golden egg immediately became a part of the Shook Twins story, so much so that there’s a whole section dedicated to it on their website, Shooktwins.com You can check out the show in person at the American River Music Festival in Coloma on Saturday, Sep. 19.

We caught up with Katelyn Shook by phone as the band was driving west toward the Oregon coast to play a private wedding show. We talked about everything from their early influences and the band’s evolution to apocalyptic megathrust earthquakes and the best parts about playing festivals.

What did you grow up listening to as kids?

We were always really into music. We listened to all the popular stuff in the ‘90s, like Celine Dion. All the badass female singers inspired us. It was the first time I heard music that meant something to me, and I was old enough to really understand what it could do.

No, I don’t think we have ever played in Sacramento.

How did you end up at the American River Festival?

We just get offers and some of the agents take them. We don’t really deal with that side of it at all. We get an offer presented to us, and we check it out and see if it’s something we want to do. That’s how it goes.

In the song “Shake,” you’re sort of painting a picture of an earthquake destroying everything and the post-apocalyptic existence that follows. Is that song about the megathrust earthquake from that viral New Yorker article a couple of months ago?

[Note: If you don’t know what this is, Google “Megathrust earthquake Oregon” and prepare to be freaked out.]

Yes it totally is. We have been aware of it for a while now. Our bassist is really aware of it and has been telling us about it for years. Living in Portland, it’s the kind of thing we thought everyone should really know about, and I’m actually really thankful the news blew it up for a second.

It’s a really freaky thing and it kind of infiltrated my mind. I was thinking about it a lot and what the aftermath would look like. The song just came out, and we decided to make it more of a story.

We follow these two fictional couples and made it more about characters in an apocalyptic scenario.

It’s genuinely fascinating and frightening.

Was it well known in the Pacific Northwest prior to the New Yorker story?

Some people over there are into geological stuff, but the average person didn’t know.

We would talk about it at our shows a lot but we didn’t get any kind of response.

We would say “Cascadia subduction zone earthquake,” and nobody really reacted.

It’s crazy how many people are totally clueless. Scary.

As twins, do you co-write the songs, or does that process happen individually?

Each of us orchestrates some on our own, and we’ll also write together. It depends.

Do you think being twins gives you two a unique musical connection?

Yeah, because we kind of have the same exact vision as we write a song together. It comes out a lot easier when you have two minds going toward the same goal. We feel fortunate that we both agree on something and we can easily tell each other, “Nah, I don’t like that.” We just get straight to the point and get it done.

Shook Twins songs are loaded with harmonies. Did that come naturally, or was it learned?

We started out singing when we were really little. We would always sing in unison and then later we got into choir. We had an amazing choir teacher from middle school all the way through high school. Just being surrounded by different harmonies made understanding that concept super easy.

How much time do you spend on the road playing shows?

We average about half the year on the road.

It seems like a lot. We play an average of 100 shows a year. We’re going to try to cut the tours down a little. It’s wearing on us all.

It’s hard to be away from home that long.

After being home for a while, do you get the desire to get up and go again?

Yeah, totally. That’s how I know I still do enjoy it. We don’t have other jobs, so when we’re home it gets a little restless. There are not really things to fill your day up every day. When we’re on the road for so long, I can just chill for weeks. It’s so great.

Is “quirky folk” an established genre, or something you came up with?

It’s self-proclaimed. I don’t think I’ve heard any other band claim that. Nobody has responded to it really well. Our publicist and our management, too. It’s the word “quirky”—I guess people automatically think it has a negative connotation, but it totally fits the definition. It’s totally us. It describes us really well.

So are you sticking with it?

Now we go a little bit more mainstream, I guess; we just call ourselves progressive indie folk now. Not as cool.

Did you grow up listening to any folk music?

We discovered all of that later. After middle school I got into more of the folk scene.

I started listening to The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and all the classics.

Do you think your non-folk background is what spikes your music with something unique and, ahem, quirky?

Yeah, when we first started writing songs, they were cheesy singer/songwriter-y and then it came into folk. We piddled around.

Your latest album, What We Do, is more fleshed out with electric instruments. How conscious was it to make a bigger sounding album?

This latest album is quite a bit different. It has a drum kit, electric guitar. It’s just a gradual evolution of our songwriting. We’re pretty slow at recording. It took three years between albums.

It’s an evolutionary change in our style.

We’re doing like 15 to 17 festivals this year.

How do you like them compared to a club show?

Festivals are great. For an up-and-coming band like us, it’s nice to not have the pressure of filling the club. You kind of get to borrow everybody else’s fans, especially if you’re on a festival with a whole bunch of bands you look up to. But club dates are great, too. I like being with the fans who are there for you. It’s a little more personal.

What’s next for Shook Twins?

We’re touring out until November, which is crazy.

We’ve got lots of festivals still to come. We do tours and the festivals get tucked in. The festivals pay a lot more. They have a bigger budget, so we gear our tours around those.

Painting Her Heart Out

MJ Lindo shares vulnerable, exotic dreams on her canvas Words Nur Kausar

M

J Lindo speaks with vulnerability and self-awareness that is sometimes rare for a 27-year-old.

The Santa Rosa-based artist has always painted what she felt, using her childhood, dreams and nightmares as muses, but she knows this opens up her insides to criticism, and she doesn’t pretend that it’s easy.

Lindo’s first solo gallery show opened Aug. 22 at Lux Quaubas Gallery in Old Sacramento. Speaking with her just a week prior, she said she was excited but extremely nervous.

“I don’t know anyone in Sacramento, so it’s scary, especially because I worked so hard. I’m still trying to finish pieces I will have to drop off the day of,” she says as she walks her Neopolitan Mastiff puppy near her new house in Roseland, an unincorporated area within Santa Rosa with diverse cultural influences on art, food and local events.

Lindo has been drawing for as long as she can remember, but only started painting at age 15. She began by working for a Santa Rosa mural restoration project with the city, and worked in groups on large murals until she was 21.

The experience taught her more than just how to accomplish large-scale murals, but also how to offer a unique perspective to the public and how to preserve cultural art.

From there she worked in acrylics, but it wasn’t until she started oil painting at 25 that she found her current style.

“It was a different media, and I could do a lot more of my ideas with it,” she says. “If you look at my older work, I used to be obsessed with zombie girls that were very dark and creepy, but I switched to oils and my work got happier. Part of it was my boyfriend’s influence—he was just somebody I can bump ideas off of. He pushed me to a different level.”

Lindo’s work from about 2008 to 2010 is slightly on the darker side. She always paints women and uses animal motifs, but the grotesqueness levels shifted over the first couple years. 2010 to 2011 got straight bloody, with animal motifs being part of the female body.

Her later work in oil, however, is sensual and has more actual creatures but less darkness. Her most recent pieces show the greatest shift to something very light, silvery and mystical, with water instead of death being more central and wood often used as a substitute for canvas.

Lindo’s art offers insight into a more contemporary woman. Her influences are sometimes obvious—beautiful flowing hair, full lips, perfect shapes. She admits that a childhood filled with recreating Disney princesses made it

easy for her to stick to the female muse. However, some recent inspiration has come from non-gender specific images she sees on social media, and she has started experimenting with painting men as women.

Since her switch to oil, Lindo has started showing in galleries across California and that exposure has pushed her to another level, she says.

“I would do a lot of Santa Rosa stuff but then I started showing in the city [San Francisco] and LA, which is a completely different talent,” she says. “People move to L.A. to be artists and you have to stand out. I still feel like I have a lot of work to do and a lot of growing to do. You shouldn’t compare yourself to others, but you can let it influence you and grow from it.”

Influences on Lindo come from a childhood that will harmonize with many young women in her age group, in a hilariously nostalgic and happy way. She is obsessed with Sailor Moon, the female anime character that blew up in the United States in the '90s and still has a large fan following. It’s the only anime she likes or watches.

“I’m obsessed. I was on Amazon today and I bought a Sailor Moon teacup,” she says, her boyfriend laughing in the background. “I literally have dreams about Sailor Moon like every other night. It’s so weird, but what happened was when I was in Canada when I was like 8 years old, I watched it every day back when there were new episodes coming out. But then we had to move to Central America—my parents are from Nicaragua—and I couldn’t finish the episodes. It was the end of my life at that time.”

with it possibly affected her more than she realized, and the imagery of what she remembered as a child showed up in her artwork. As she got older, other situations also came to life in what she drew.

“I think when the girls I was drawing were really zombie-ish, my life was tough at that time. But then my life changed,” she says, referring to when she met her boyfriend and fell in love.

One of her art influences is Sylvia Ji, known for her Day of the Dead women. At 19, Lindo saw an interview with that artist in which she said some of her best work was done was when she was very depressed.

As a young artist, Lindo was blown away by this, she says.

Artists who delve in mythical images, animals, and surrealism impact Lindo most because she likes to paint what she dreams, and that’s usually where her mind wanders.

“I always want to paint something that I could wish

come true,” she says. One of her wishes, for example, is to have a miniature zoo, where all the zoo animals are alive but tiny. Thus in some of her paintings she will have a tiny elephant hanging out a cup held by a distressed woman, or a small panda on a chopstick.

Her colors lately also evoke a more surreal theme, with pastels on wood causing a transparent effect. The women seem to be wisps of their actual selves and images of water and hair flowing only add to their transparency.

“That’s what I like to see in other people’s art too— something impossible,” she says.

THE MIRROR GAZES INTO ITSELF Queen of Earth not Rated Words Andrew C. Russell To quote a fellow critic, the characters in Alex Ross Perry’s terse new study in human relation, Queen of Earth, are “privileged, selfobsessed and unsympathetic.” This is merely a starting point. All of the auxiliary flourishes are merely variations on this theme. It is well-studied in its influences, aiming to capture the pointless cruelties of early Polanski and the agonizing impersonality of Antonioni; there is a palpable effort in Queen to evoke a bygone style or mood, with many clear nods of appreciation to other works to keep many a cinephile busy. But resting uneasily in this fauxdated, satin-lined frame is a clunky mumblecore plot populated by smug Gen-Y Americans, adrift in questionable dialogue and ersatz wit. Is the average foreign ‘60s arthouse film any better? Arguably not, but in the absence of real cultural and temporal distance, we are left chillingly sober and painfully aware of the rough edges. Those of us that can get wrapped up in the formalities of performance and representation will appreciate this exercise, but for others, an exercise is all it will be.

Elisabeth Moss (of Mad Men fame) is Catherine, a woman in crisis and the “queen” referenced in the title. We are introduced to her as the film opens, in the wake of her father’s suicide and just as her long-term boyfriend rejects her. It marks the beginning of her character’s spiral toward a psychotic break, as she struggles to cope with the depth of human grief that her life-long codependency has shielded her from.

Catherine retreats to upstate New York to spend time with her closest friend, Virginia (Katherine Waterston), who lives rent-free at her family’s upscale lake house. It is clear the two have grown distant; regular flashbacks to a similar trip one year prior show a poisonous dynamic, with a then-happy Catherine invested solely in her boyfriend and emotionally oblivious to Virginia’s own crisis.

This year, the tables have turned, and the two women settle in for a week of poorly concealed spite and growing tension.

The overall effect of the tight close-ups, cryptic expressions and brooding score that round out the rest of the film is that of an ‘80s slasher film married with the melodrama of ‘70s Italian

giallo. The atmosphere is overwhelmingly indulgent, the characters more believable as archetypes than as rational agents, and the overall reverence for bygone cinematic tropes tends to push even the most earnest scenes into luminous quotation marks; in one sequence, Catherine keeps an uneaten salad next to her bed that Virginia had made for her, initially a sign of suspicion between two former friends, and eventually a (quite literal) symbol of a decaying friendship. This device mirrors one used in Polanski’s timeless psychodrama Repulsion (1965), where a roast rabbit was used to the same effect. But what made the earlier film gruesome, intense and personal, makes this one ironic and unsubstantial—a mere formality.

Queen of Earth is often more compelling in moments of expectation than of revelation. Virginia’s boyfriend, Rich (perhaps a play on the cardinal sin and primary characteristic of the film’s characters) is a mocking presence (played by Patrick Fugit), showing up now and again to take attention away from Catherine and give her disdainful, impish looks. The whole of the film feels like a buildup to her violent retaliation against these two unsympathetic presences. Adding to this impression is the film’s method of marking the days of the week in flowering, blood-red script between scenes. Has this device ever been used in a film for anything else than to foreshadow an atrocity?

Moss’ portrayal of eroding sanity is oftentimes rewarding, but never quite rings 100 percent true. I had to rewatch the opening scene twice to determine whether her character was really arguing with her boyfriend, or whether she was an actress doing a readthrough of a scene with the help of her best friend. I believe this is more a fault of the script than anything else, which blends into the film about as well as a fistful of eggshells in an omelet.

As of now, there is an eerie consensus by critics that this film marks another triumph by a budding auteur. A triumph it is, perhaps—a triumph in aim, but not in execution. The themes— depression, insanity, passive-aggression, ennui, and loathing—as they are played with here, do not suggest the same reservoir of emotional experience that is readily evident, in say, a Lars von Trier film. While this film is sure to find its audience (it is currently being distributed by IFC), for the majority of viewers, this is not a picture that will make you want to smoke after watching. It’s one you’ll want a smoke to get through.

You may not remember 1982, but I do. It was probably the best year of my life (at the very least in the top three). I was 5 years old.

I remember one Sunday night my parents gathered my sister and I into our maroon Ford LTD station wagon and drove us to the movies.

They took us to see E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. We probably begged them to do so. I mean, who could resist that garble-voiced, blue-eyed, ubercute little alien dude? To make it even better, the adorable alien with amazing powers befriended a young boy who was close to my own age. I could have been Elliott, after all, if only E.T. had chosen me for a buddy.

I’m sure a lot of parents fell into this trap: thinking what a great family movie E.T. was. And for the most part it was, until towards the end when it morphed into something more like another Steven Spielberg film, Schindler’s List, with our cute alien hero tortured and prodded to the tearfilled horror of his loving, adopted Earth family— and every child in the audience, myself included.

Maybe I blocked the horror out of my mind, because despite witnessing the atrocities E.T. had to endure at the hands of our federal government, my memories of the film remained fond. E.T. was my favorite character ever. I had an awesome E.T. plushie. I wore an E.T. costume to school for Halloween that year.

Pushing the awesomeness of 1982 even further, Santa brought me an Atari for Christmas that year. It’s been 33 years now, but I can still almost feel the excitement of unwrapping that box and finding my very own 2600. In fact, the sound of my rapturous screams may still be well on their way through the cosmos as I write this and may one day find the ears of a ridiculously adorable alien thing who, out of curiosity, will get in his spaceship and follow the sound it heard all the way to Earth, and I’ll finally get my very own E.T. buddy to go to the bar and play darts with. Cool, right?

So I had my E.T. obsession and my Atari; therefore, the next logical piece that would complete my Holy Trinity of Awesomeness would come in the form of the E.T. Atari game. We bought it at a Toys “R” Us and I couldn’t wait to get home to play it …

Though now I’ve been through enough trials, tribulations and Mets’ late-season collapses (please, God, let this year not be one of them) to have rounded into a mature, cynical, critical jerkface, back then, I still had a positive outlook on life. I didn’t really know what it meant for something to suck.

I played E.T. and wandered through its perplexing environments and tried to dodge a seemingly omniscient FBI dude and fell into just about every hole imaginable with no hope of rescue.

Maybe I kept playing hoping I’d find the good in it, like years later when I listened to Metallica’s Black Album over and over again, refusing to believe that my favorite band hadn’t just become the new overlords of butt-rock. It was all for naught, though, I’d learned the meaning of disappointment.

Innocence was forever lost.

The E.T. game was so legendary in its awfulness that it was blamed for setting the video game industry back a few years. On Netflix, you’ll find a great documentary, Atari: Game Over, that seems to unravel that myth while also finding truth in another. Tales told of a mythical dumping ground somewhere in New Mexico that became the final resting place of all the unbought or returned E.T. video game cartridges. The story quickly became an urban legend, but no one was able to determine whether or not it was actually true. Director Zak Penn created a humorously nostalgic piece of investigative journalism that culminated in a 2014 excavation of a site in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where, sure enough, a hidden trove of thousands of Atari cartridges (E.T. among them) were unearthed.

According to Rollingstone.com, those cartridges recently came up for auction on eBay. Almost 900 were sold, and they netted a sum of $108,000. The single highest selling E.T. cartridge sold for $1,535. Proceeds from the auctions went to the city of Alamogordo and the Tularosa Basin Historical Society. Hopefully they put those funds to good use. If only I still had my own E.T. game, I could’ve been a thousand dollars richer. That’s, like, two student loan payments. Luckily, by now, I’m very used to disappointment.
