BEFORE YOU GO OUT

Eating before going out will help your body absorb alcohol and give you energy for the whole night. Keep your valuables and your room locked up during parties and when you’re out. Plan ahead. Remember, ID, fully charged phone, cash for drinks, emergency bank card, separate cash for taxi and house keys. Think to yourself: ‘keys, money, phone, plan to get home?’ Agree to stick with a couple of friends, between the dancefloor, toilets and smoking areas it can be easy for groups to get split up. The faster you drink, the faster you’re off to bed. Do you want to last the night or be tucked up at midnight? Thinking of getting lucky? Get a degree from University, not an STI. Carry a condom.

WHILE YOU’RE OUT... Spiking can leave you vulnerable. Do not take a drink from anyone but bar staff. Keep your phone and wallet in a secure pocket or bag. Groping is gross. Don’t touch without permission. Having water or a soft drink every couple of drinks is less embarrassing than being ‘the puker’. Know your limits. Drinking in rounds is expensive and stops you drinking at your own pace. “I was drunk” is never an excuse. Just because you won’t remember, doesn’t mean others won’t. Watch out for the friends you agreed to stick with, make sure to look after each other. Never let a friend leave alone. You cannot give sexual consent whilst bladdered. Consent requires a sound and sober mind. Sex without consent is rape.

GETTING HOME

Avoid leaving the club alone, do you still have your agreed buddies with you? Drunken swimming is dangerous. No seriously, save the beach trip for daytime. If you’ve made it to the small hours then a taxi is your best option. Booking directly with a taxi company ensures a legal licensed ride home, phone or use a smartphone app to do this. Be considerate, neither your housemates nor neighbours will appreciate being woken up. One Last Pint. Have a pint of water before bed, hungover you will be grateful.

SAFE TAXI SCHEME

If you find yourself in a sticky situation on a night out, with no money to get home, and the only option is to walk back alone in the dark then you can use SUBU’s emergency Safe Taxi Scheme to get home. You have to call United Taxis and make a booking, you must quote the account number 999 and the words ‘home safely’ along with your student number e.g i7709705. Your fare will be held and payable to SUBU reception within one week.

THE OLD FIRE STATION

The Old Fire station is committed to keeping people safe on a night out so if you need to take a friend home let a member of staff know and you will be allowed to re-enter, and if you are a designated driver then let the bar staff know and you can collect your free soft drinks.
