SUBU ANNUAL REVIEW
2016/17
FOREWORD We are extremely pleased and proud to inform you that SUBU has had a stunning year in 2016/17. Many of the things that were beginning last year have been continued successfully and with some distinct growth. In particular, we have seen many more students engaging with SUBU from diverse backgrounds, this culminated in the biggest SUBU involvement in Black History Month which ended with our first ever awards ceremony for students from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. We’ve been working hard to ensure equality and diversity isn’t just a buzzword, ensuring we make real positive impacts by doing all we can to create an atmosphere that makes all students feel included irrespective of who they are or where they are from. However, there is still more work to be done and we are ready for the challenges ahead. Through our great partnership with the University, we have been able to lobby for a free inter-campus bus service for our Lansdowne taught students. SUBU Debates was another great initiative that started this year to get students from different backgrounds air their views on certain topics within a safe zone.
FULL TIME OFFICERS
We’ve had an amazing year working with SUBU and want to take this opportunity to share with you a few of our highlights.
We really appreciate our partnership with BU. We recognize that the University and all of its staff care and do their best for the students. We are constantly reminding them of the value of the student voice, and highlight issues and concerns that may not have been there before. The new role of VP Community, enabled our Community, Volunteering and Green department to go from strength to strength and we are rightly proud of the work that they have done, especially in the local community. With campaigns such as People and Planet Go Green and the annual Big Give being the biggest and most successful due to the new role. For the first time ever we have had a really close working relationship with SportBU. This has enabled us to work together on a number of things this year, including more of a SportBU presence in Lansdowne, more SportBU involvement with our events and more support for sports teams. This year we having been working on a brand new ‘Inclusion Sports League’ launching in October, enabling students with disabilities to take part in competitive sport. A huge thanks to all the students for helping, advising and at times cajoling us. Thanks to all the part time elected officers working tirelessly and without pay on councils, not forgetting the Club and Society committees , the Nerve Media team, RAG and other student leaders. We also sincerely thank our tremendous SUBU staff team who are supported by over one hundred student staff.
It is the third year we have had an elected officer and council predominantly devoted to welfare and liberation issues. We have been able to cover a wide range of activities and campaigns from the fantastic Disability History Month, LGBT History Month to the Don’t Panic campaign, One World Festival and our first ever Mental Health Zone.
Much of what we do is brought to you from the SUBU Communications team. This year we had an individual communications executive, who has been devoted to supporting the full time elected officers with their campaigns and events. They produce materials for us from flyers to posters, videos to social media, even this very guide, so a final big thanks to them.
We have also been active with our Representation department, and SimOn, our award winning Rep feedback tool. Faculties and Professional Service departments of BU seem to appreciate the feedback that they get from the reps. This helps them build an even better student experience.
Looking forward, we hope to not only build on the work of this year but also do more on mental health; advising students on how to manage their landlords and housing issues; engaging with students of all abilities in activities, and encouraging participation in all things SUBU has to offer.
Our Insight and Policy team have developed from providing research based evidence to playing a huge role in guiding and advising the elected officers on issues of importance for students at both a local and national level. Their ‘insight’ enables us to influence BU for the benefit of the students. Our link with the University continues to remain strong and we’ve seen great achievements which includes the new Laptop Loan Scheme, and the League of Entrepreneurs, which has allowed students to develop business and networking skills.
Best wishes, Daniel & Alan

Daniel Asaya, SUBU President Serving as SUBU’s first ever elected International, Postgraduate and Black President over the past year has been a great honor. It has not only changed the way I think, but has given me the opportunity to positively change lives everyday. Glad to have being part of a team of Sabbs and staff whose main goal is to make a positive impact in every student’s life irrespective of background, race, gender or sexuality. As Chair of the Trustee Board/Executive Committee, officer for Lansdowne council and founder of SUBU Debates, I’m so privileged to have worked with a set of incredible volunteers who give up their time for students. Also proud of our strong relationship with the University, something my colleagues in other Unions are jealous of. It has been a great year and I’m looking forward to working with everyone for another year to take our Union to even greater heights.

Georgia Larkins, Vice President Community

Charlie Souter-Phillips, Vice President Welfare
This year has been an absolute whirlwind, and I have loved every minute of it. I threw myself into the role knowing very little about how to make change, and now I look back and am very proud of the things I have achieved (Working with staff and students to make things happen!). SUBU has given me the opportunity to develop personally, and professionally. I’m so proud of the empowerment and opportunities SUBU provides for our students, it’s been great to see so many of them engaged in what we’ve done over the past year. This year I’ve been working closely with SportBU, and one of my highlights was the Sports and Societies Festival we hosted; a week celebrating Sports and Societies here at BU, with more than 30 clubs hosting taster sessions and showcasing what they do throughout the year.
Working with SUBU has been challenging, but an experience that I would encourage anyone to do, it has helped me grow as a person, I would do it again. I have learned skills here that I cannot wait to take with me into my next adventure. This is a busy environment, one where you have the responsibility to do right by and lead students, but also dipping your toes into all sorts of projects and jobs. I’ve experienced attending important formal meetings, had opportunity to influence the Vice Chancellor and MPs with regards to student housing. Having vision on how our campaigns look, monitoring the success of campaigns, sat on interviews and hired even more wardens this year to help students in housing, made a safe taxi scheme, hosted events and had to make real tough decisions and to think about what is right by students.
Back in March 2016, I had considered my running in the elections to be a moderate risk to my career progression and personal growth – but I decided that on balance I was happy to take the risk. Looking back I can now honestly say that working as a sabbatical officer was one of the best decisions I have ever made. After putting my head above the parapet, and taking those first steps to develop relations with entrepreneurs in the community; I had quickly developed a new found sense of direction and self-belief. I had a network of people who were knowledgeable, kind, and willing to help students. After testing the waters with an inaugural entrepreneurship event at BU, it was quickly apparent that there was indeed an appetite from students to learn how to become self-starters. The League of Entrepreneurs was born, and we ran multiple events across the year in an endeavour to support budding entrepreneurs.
It’s been an amazing year as Vice President Welfare, I’ve learnt so much in this role and the support from SUBU staff has been incredible. I’m really thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given to develop both personally and professionally and I hope I have been able to empower others to do the same. It has been so rewarding working with the students, running campaigns and organising events for the diverse community here at BU. It’s hard to pick a proudest moment because there has been so many, being part of SUBU and helping students feel more confident and able to be themselves is very fulfilling. I’m really looking forward to another year in this position, where I can use the experience of the past few months to develop the work that I have started and to shape new projects such as the Mental Health Zone.

AWARDS & SUCCESS SUBU has gone to new heights this year, with students and departments going on to gain local and national awards for their hard work. A huge thanks to all of the incredible students who work tirelessly and passionately to improve the Students’ Union, and to the full time and part time officers for continually inspiring and developing new ideas and campaigns.
Finally, thanks to every staff member who contributes to the success of SUBU day in and day out.

RAISING AND GIVING RAG is the fundraising arm of the Students Union. It gives students a chance to give back where they can while experiencing some once in a lifetime adventures.
chair@bournemouthrag.org.uk
Students can fundraise for various charities throughout the year and sign up for both community and overseas expeditions and trips.
This year RAG has focused on increasing opportunities for students to get involved in their local community. We have worked closely with our local Core Charity, Dorset Blind Association and increased the number of community events offered in order to engage more students. We have also been recognised with two National Student Fundraising Association Awards: The Hope For Children RAG of the Year Award and SU Staff member of the Year Award.

SHANNON KNIGHT It has been a pleasure to be able to lead RAG this year. It has been a challenging year, not just for Bournemouth RAG, but for fundraising nationally, however I am certain we have built a solid foundation for next year. From the beginning of my time in RAG in 2013, I have wanted to give back more to the local community, which is why, as Chair, I supported and encouraged the Leadership Team to introduce new community events which I hope will be continued into the future. As a final year student I will be sad to leave RAG but it’s now time for someone else to push it forward and continue with a RAG passion. A massive thank you to SUBU Activities for their help - without them we would not have achieved what we have. 7
CLUBS AND SOCIETIES Clubs and Societies are an essential addition to student life. Being a member of a Club or Society can really shape a university experience and help students to develop key life skills. Not only this, but clubs create fantastic opportunities for students to make friendships with a group of like-minded, It has been another record year for Clubs and Societies! With an established presence on the second floor of the Student Centre, students are even more inclined to approach the friendly Activities Team with questions and ideas.

passionate people, learn key transferrable-skills that will make them more employable, and it’s even been proven to help increase retention rates within the university. There really is something for everyone with clubs and societies here at SUBU.
With even more Clubs and Societies to get involved in, there are now more ways for committee to train and communicate ideas, and an even better recognition scheme.
Clubs and Societies, as a department, have pushed an increase in the number of activities available to students, along with an increase in engagement across the board.

ALEX BUDD I feel that I have got a lot out of helping to run the Performing Arts Society. I was the Producer for this year’s show, American Idiot, which meant that I was in charge of all the finances and marketing/publicity for the society. I feel that my confidence has built and that I have voiced my opinions more often. I have also felt that I have made a lot of good friends within the society which has made me feel much more comfortable for my time at uni and made me meet and socialise with people I normally would not have, which has been great! On a professional level I feel that it has greatly helped me as my future aspirations are to work in managing the arts. Running PARTS has helped me to learn more about working as a team and into how to run a mid-scale arts event, as this year we ran our event, American Idiot, very successfully.

DEMOCRACY AND EQUALITY The Democracy and Equality Department is there to do 2 things: to empower and enable students to have a say in decisions that impact their student experience; and make sure that those voices reflect the diversity of our student body.
In this second year of the department, we have exceeded and bettered all the achievements we had last academic year. For the first time all our Big Student Meetings reached quoracy; there where several campaigns run by the VP Welfare working with the Equality and Campaigns Coordinator. We introduced BME Champions who were instrumental in ensuring that we reach out to underrepresented groups.

There are various channels for students to have a say on issues, including the officer elections, Big Student Meeting and student councils. We also support students to run their own campaigns, addressing local, national or global issues such as LGBTQ+ rights; cultural unity; BME Champions and many more.
The department ran five elections in total; both our Fulltime Officer elections and Part-time Officer elections were record breaking in terms of participation. We also saw a very diverse Executive Committee elected. There were a number of outstanding events starting with the Black History Month Awards which saw over 300 students attending to PRIDE which was much bigger than the previous year.

JOANNA ANN I got involved with SUBU as soon as I arrived at Bournemouth, I first got involved with the ACS (African Caribbean Society) before I made the life changing decision to run for an elected position of Education Council Chair which meant that I also seat on the SUBU Executive Committee. I also applied and was successful to become one of the student trustees of SUBU. Since acquiring all the positions I have had an amazing student experience that has made me very aware of most issues that face students and a deeper understanding of the Students’ Union. The Democracy and Equality department has always been there to assist me. I very much feel that I am part of the SUBU family.

SUBU has been super supportive and helpful, providing lots of volunteer experiences and opportunities that helped me win volunteer of the year, I’d never have been able to even be nominated or considered without all the support from volunteer leaders and their dedication to the volunteers and their work, they were also very supportive organising an amazing awards night to celebrate all our achievements and hard work over the year, encouraging us to work harder and volunteer more, making all the work that has been put into volunteering a positive and worthwhile experience.

Student Reps have had another phenomenal year. They worked tirelessly throughout the year to collect feedback from their students, represent it to their Faculties, and share any outcomes of the feedback back to the students they represent. SimOn has continued to be used as the way Reps collect feedback. The simple online tool that was created by SUBU, is now being used by two other Students’ Unions, and is looking to be taken on by at least another two at the start of next

The Senior Reps have been particularly strong this year, creating a mechanism that allows broad feedback to be heard beyond Programme Level. They met monthly with the Full Time Officers to feedback on topics that affected the wider student body, the Officers then fed this into their ongoing work with their respective Councils.

GEORGINA MARKEY Being a Student Rep has been a life-changing opportunity, one that I will forever be grateful for. A year ago, I suffered from terrible agoraphobia, and while I still do struggle with anxiety, I honestly did not imagine the difference one year could make. With the help and encouragement of SUBU and BU staff, I have gained massive confidence, now I have been organising socials for my course, speaking in packed lecture theatres and gaining feedback. SUBU is one of the best Students’ Unions around, and the evidence is apparent. The staff are some of the most fantastic people I have ever met, it has been a pleasure working with them. My course has made significant changes – changes that have come because of the feedback from students and then brought up in faculty meetings. Being a Student Rep has taught me massively about my course, the university, and myself. It has been an amazing experience, one that I would recommend to anyone, and one that I hope to continue for the rest of my time here at BU. 19

I was drawn to apply for the role within SUBU Advice as it was extremely relevant to what I had been doing already on placement, and potentially after I graduate. Not only this but SUBU is a fantastic place to work whilst completing your final year. The amount of support I have had this year has been unfathomable. Working anywhere else I might have had to fit my uni schedule around my work schedule, and sometimes put the job first. Working for SUBU has given me the freedom to work around my studies. I have had the opportunity to work on many great projects, such as Money Matters, and lead my own campaigns this year, helping me develop my own personal skills. Not only have this but I had a first-hand glimpse at all the great work SUBU does for students, and even got involved in things I would have never thought to.

Working as the Digital Engagement Coordinator for my placement module with SUBU has been a very positive and pleasurable experience. Throughout each stage of my developmental stage, SUBU has made me realise my potential. Nerve TV hit the ground running, releasing multiple videos a month and provided the main coverage of SUBU’s Summer Ball. Nerve magazine released six editions this year, including a limited-edition BU vs Solent Varsity issue, attracting numerous student readers across BU. Nerve Radio soundproofed and rebuilt their

JOSH STEVENSON Joining Nerve this year has been such an amazing experience and allowed for so many opportunities that I wouldn’t otherwise have had. Being the head of a new department was daunting at first, but the rest of the team have been so welcoming towards my entire committee. I have been able to practically apply the skills that I have learnt whilst at university to work towards producing regular content at a professional level; as well as encourage students that never considered TV as an option to try their hand at something new. Nerve Media as a whole are going from strength to strength and I can’t wait to see where we end up this time next year.

STUDENT COUNCILS ACTIVITIES COUNCIL
COMMUNITY COUNCIL This has been the year of the first ever Community Council and it’s been a real privilege getting to know those on the council. They have achieved so much individually and as part of a team, whether that be working in pairs together on projects or morally supporting one another. Our Volunteer Chair led a fantastic volunteer week gathering members of the council, and students to be involved in volunteering. Our Green Chair has worked alongside the Green Taskforce with the support of members of the council, to run sustainability campaigns such as ‘how bad are bananas’. Our Green Chair also ran campaigns against Barclay’s fracking investments which has been a part to play in the wider people and planet campaign that has encouraged Barclays pull out of Third energy Fracking Company. Members of the council also worked to promote awareness of the National Student Survey and Teaching Excellence Framework by running an information campaign with the Executive Committee. Two of the Part Time Officers worked together to set up a housing buddy up scheme, whereby students in second and final year could help first years look for housing. Their research has been invaluable.
The main focus for the Activities Council this year was promoting and advertising all of the wonderful clubs and societies to reach out to as many students as possible! The Council worked on building relationships with the societies from promotional videos giving even smaller and quieter clubs a big shout-out (and highlighting the Cultural Societies we have here at BU), hosting Clubs Committee Board where Clubs and Societies meet and discuss issues or provide suggestions on improvements with the Council, to organising a really successful Refreshers fair! We’ve made sure that we are available to help out any societies that needed extra support. Our very first Sports and Societies Festival was amazing, many societies were involved and provided showcases and give-it-a-go days to encourage students to try something new. Overall it’s been a fun year trying new ways to help societies get heard and getting students involved in them, hopefully this will continue onto next year making it even better!

LANSDOWNE COUNCIL
EDUCATION COUNCIL
Lansdowne Campus has often been overlooked. Working together with pure diligence and hard work, the Landsdowne council have managed to overturn that train of thought. Lansdowne is now more of BU than one would’ve thought. This past year has been one full of achievements. A notable success would be free bus for Lansdowne taught students to go to the Talbot campus every Wednesday to access our events and university facilities there. We also hosted our first ever Lansdowne week with lots of events which included a mature students social, international students day, SUBU Debates as well as a Lollipop afterparty. One of the highlights for Lansdowne week was our collaboration with SUBU Debates to host a debate about the privatisation of the NHS. It was great to have been able to engage our HSS students and learn more about certain topics. This debate was well attended and this is something the council plans to continue next year. Daniel the SUBU President and full time officer in charge of the council has worked hard to ensure that no Lansdowne student feels isolated because of the nature of their degree of location of study. This has made him to start working twice a week from Studland House and also working with Ally Hanks the Lansdowne Campus Manager to offer practical support to the students there. I believe that our council has done its best this year to offer students the greatest University experience that they could possibly get. Their happiness is what drives us and our aim is to continue doing what we do for the students we love so dearly.
This year the Education Council has worked on a variety of different projects; these include current and future education issues along with student specific issues. The council has followed a trial by the University to implement anonymous marking for all units, this has been particularly successful and the university are looking to action this gradually in the future. We have also followed up on student feedback as to where they feel that their work is not being marked out of 100% and that the appropriate feedback is not always received. To examine this further the part-time officers have spoken to their faculties who are investigating the matter further. One of the PTO’s has also worked on improving communication to placement students; the University has been particularly receptive to this and are working on a more inclusive strategy. Finally the council has been working on the integration of PANOPTO, although this is fully reliant on the academic staff embracing the technology, we have worked closely with the faculties explain the advantages of using it to the staff and there students.

The welfare council have worked hard this year to make BU the best place for all students. Through individual campaigns and the work we have done together as a council we have been able to achieve some amazing things. As a council we were instrumental in the SUBU Safe Walk campaign which aimed to make students feel safer walking home following instances of sexual assault close to campus. Furthermore everyone’s dedication and motivation has meant that Bournemouth Student Pride and One World Festival have been bigger and better than ever this year! We were even able to take a group of students to Southampton join the Hampshire reclaim the night march which was incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. The welfare council is made up of passionate individuals who want to make sure every students needs are met, this includes student parents and mature students and as a result of hard work from members of the council we have been able to increase events and socials where they are the focus. Overall this year has been incredibly successful for the welfare council and it has been a pleasure to build friendships with a team of such hard working individuals who are so passionate about being a part of positive change.

We also negotiated cheaper deals in student accommodation over the summer; positive impact for Faculty of HSS students, postgraduates and international students planning to stay for this period. We developed excellent relationships with Dorset and Wilts Fire service and Safer Neighbourhood Team resulting in awareness campaigns with the SU. And finally, we developed positive working relationships with the Faculty of HSS resulting in more specific and timely communication helping students to get involved with the SU.
