FESTIVAL

Programme 5th - 8th Feb 2018

Welcome

VP Activities introduction

Your one way ticket to unforgettable experiences How to get involved: 1. Choose the activities you would like to do

Welcome to your Sports and Societies Festival 2018! A week celebrating and showcasing some of the amazing sports, societies, and activities that we have on offer for you at Bournemouth University! Even bigger and better than last year, this is your chance to GIVE IT A GO and try out a whole range of fun extra-curricular activities, for FREE! Freshers’ may be over, but all of the activities we have to offer fit nicely with our Refreshers Fair which is on Thursday 8th February and is a great opportunity for you to sign up to some of the activities on offer, helping you to get the full University experience.

All of the activities have been designed to give you an insight into what its like to be part of a Sport, Club or Society, and the small tasters mean you don’t have to commit or take too much time out of your day to try them.

So what are you waiting for, go get involved and have fun! Yours Sincerely, Brooke Elias (VP Activities)

Whilst I was studying, being involved in a society (The BU Falcons Cheerleading Team) and taking part in other things like LEGGIT, made my experience a thousand times better than it would have been if I had chosen to just focus on my degree. If anyone asked me one piece of advice whilst at University, it would be to get involved in as much as you can!

2. Check if you are required to book online 3. Book your space (if indicated)

SUBU clubs and Societies Clubs, Societies and Networks are here to provide you with extra-curricular activities that improve your overall University experience. Joining a society can be one of the best ways to meet new people, discover new abilities, and find that work life balance. At SUBU, you can choose from over 120 Societies and with more being created each month; you won’t be disappointed.

WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE IT A GO Being a member or on the committee of a Club or Society will improve employability and make your CV stand out. Your time management, organisation and team working skills will naturally develop by being involved in a society. Clubs and Societies can help you find like minded people that share similar interests that you may not find in your course or in your student housing. Self development is paramount. The SUBU Vision is to have a positive impact on every BU student’s journey by 2018 and by joining a Club or Society, you become part of not just the Society but you become an ambassador for SUBU and get to represent your University in your chosen activity.

Climbing Societ

As a member of BU Climbing I’ve been able to keep training and competing during my studies, make lots of new friends, and help introduce the sport to so many awesome people from Uni. As a committee member I’ve been given the opportunity to learn valuable skills and work with some really nice people to make climbing a safe, fun and approachable hobby for all of our members.

Photography S

Being President of the Photography Society has allowed me to not just share my passion with other students here at BU, but also allowed me to develop my own leadership skills. Meeting new people and organising exciting events is always a privilege and we hope we continue to grow.

Being involved in the Reducetarian Society has been the best decision I have made in my final year. Being around others who share the same vision and seek a more compassionate world is something words can’t describe. I am beyond thankful for the opportunities and people this society is bringing my way and am excited for what the rest of the year has in store.

Trampolining

Netball

SportBU has allowed me to develop my Netball coaching and I am now the University Netball Officer (UNO) for Bournemouth University. This opportunity has allowed me the chance to develop links with many external partners; such as England Netball.

Activities range from no commitment pay and play sessions which include Basketball, Trampolining and Tennis to weekly coached clubs which include Netball, Badminton and Women’s Football. For those looking for a more competitive option, Campus Leagues provide the chance to play football, netball and badminton in organised weekly fixtures. This term, 10 brand new courses have been added to our existing course programme, including Capoeira, Olympic Weightlifting, Clubbercise and Fencing. Also new this term are our inclusive sports, comprising of Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby and an Inclusion League. Getting involved in Campus Sport is a great way to stay fit, meet new people and have fun doing it! All information can be found either on our website or at SportBU reception.

All of the opportunities and experiences provided to me by SportBU stood me in great stead to push on in my career after University. Having been a Campus Sport Activator and RELAYS ambassador in my final year, specifically coaching Trampolining.

s u p cam ts spor The Campus Sport programme offers students and staff of any ability the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of recreational sport. The timetable currently boasts 63 regular sessions per week across 40 different sports.

Men’s Rugby

Being in a sports team will help fulfil your Uni aspirations, going out on weekly socials, running on to the rugby pitch with your best mates who end up becoming part of your brotherhood! There’s honestly no better feeling. You’ll regret not joining a BU sports team!

Men’s Table Ten

Women’s Footb

Being part of the BU sports team had it’s own charm. You get to compete head to head with the best any University has to offer with world class equipment and you get to do all that while wearing the vibrant blue jersey.

I have loved being in a sports team definitely because I have met a lot of new people that I have now become such good friends with and other than being in the same sport we would have never met. I love the bond and the connection we have within the whole team. Definitely do not regret joining.
