What is subu community volunteering?
Community Volunteering is when student volunteers give their time to help charities or not-for-profit organisations in the local community, and encompasses a variety of student-led projects and one-off MAD (Make-ADifference) Days both on campus and in the wider Bournemouth and Dorset community. 3
It is all about what students can do to make a difference and improve the lives of others. From 5 Minute Volunteering to much longer projects, we encourage students to take part in a range of activities, events and campaigns to become more involved with the local community.
Is community volunteering a big commintment 1
BE A COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
As a community volunteer you can do short bursts, or long bursts of volunteering - as much as you want - and be completely flexible, to fit in with your academic timetable at university. More information about this is on Page 13 of this booklet.
2
BE A VOLUNTEER Leader
As a Volunteer Leader, you will own a specific project and be fully committed to helping regularly on specific community projects. You will team up in pairs of leaders to run a project and be responsible for recruiting student volunteers to help on your project, and arranging meetStudent ing points and transport to the projVolunteers and ect (with lots of help from SUBU Leaders are led by a 4 of course!!) More information person Leadership Team, about this is on Page 20 with a Chair, Vice-Chair, of this booklet. Media and Events Officer, and Lansdowne Officer. You can find out more about the Volunteering and Leadership Team and what they do on Page 13 - 14 of this booklet. 4
Our volunteering projects Beach Champions Bournemouth’s greatest asset is it beautiful sandy beaches. Our Beach Champions volunteer to help keep the coasts clean through regular beach cleans to stop litter getting in to the sea and harming our environment. Help the fight to keep our beaches litter free!!
Slades Farm Community Garden Project
Which beach would you prefer, a dirty beach filled with trash and dangerous obstacles, or a clean beach where you can play without worrying? I would choose the latter, and that’s why I chose to volunteer with the Beach Champions. Steve Sim, Beach Champions Volunteer 2015 - 2016
At Slades Farm, just a short walk from Talbot Campus, volunteers muck in to help build and maintain a community garden. Get involved with digging, planting, pruning, weeding and maintaining the frog pond while learning all about organic gardening, to make Slades Farm a nicer environment for everyone to enjoy. Volunteering at Slades Farm throughout my 3 years at Bournemouth University provided me with an opportunity to meet other people as well as to create and maintain something special. You can see the instantaneous changes that you make to the site meaning that the local community can see these changes too. It’s amazing to return to Slades Farm and see how the garden has changed for the better over time and know that you were a part of that. Corina Lees, Volunteer 2013 - 2016
Conservation Rangers If you love the great outdoors, or want to learn more about the beautiful Dorset countryside and how to look after it, then being a Conservation Ranger is for you. With regular afternoon and weekend activities, you could well find yourself ‘pine-pulling’ on the RSPB nature reserve, helping members of the public learn more about the countryside at the Kingfisher Barn, or learning about hedge management in the countryside.
5
Mural Painting If you enjoy art and painting this is for you. The Mural Painting Volunteers will design and paint murals for local schools and charities. Last year, our Mural Painters painted some fantastic walls in the waiting room of the local charity Rape Crisis.
6
Our volunteering projects Alzheimer’s Society Our two Alzheimer’s support projects are the Memory Café and Singing for the Brain. At the Memory Café, student volunteers come and chat to people suffering from memory conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, enjoy a cuppa, and playing table top quizzes and games, or just being someone there to chat with to brighten their day. At the Singing for the Brain project, volunteers join the community members as they sing songs which can aid the memory and improve their general wellbeing. So if you want to put a smile on people’s faces, this project could be for you!!
MAD Days MAD stands for Make-A-Difference and does exactly what it says – getting a group of students together to make real change and improve people’s lives. Examples of previous MAD Days are:• • • • •
Making Christmas decorations for a Residential Care Home Urban Weekenders Conservation Project at Upton Heath Litter Squad Community Litter Pick Chocolate Sleigh Making for Trussell Trust Food Bank Toiletry Bags for the Homeless – Hope for Food
I was involved in several MAD Days because I wanted to help local community while strengthening my teamwork and communication skills. It was a great experience and I learnt how big the impact we could make bye our small act of kindness, either towards other people or the environment. For me, MAD Days is a brilliant platform for everyone to develop beneficial skills, which are essential for personal and professional development, and it feels good to help others! Yeyen Sinarta, MAD Days Volunteer
Hope for Food Hope for Food is a charity based on feeding the homeless, and helping out around 200 families in the local area, who are struggling with poverty. Volunteers help out on a regularly weekly basis at the local ‘Soup Kitchen’ in central Bournemouth. Students also donate their unwanted bedding at the end of the year such as duvets, pillows and sleeping bags.

Education for Sustainable Development This is a campaign to lobby the university about how they can be responsible for better education for students on sustainable development. The campaign will help other students on and off campus, and in the community, to ask questions about understanding and awareness of sustainable development and lobbying the university to be better educated on how to live more sustainable lives.
Divestment from Fossil Fuels
Ethical Food Campaign
Divestment from Fossil Fuels, means campaigning to organisations who invest their money with banks, who in turn, invest the money with companies who fund programmes to extract fossil fuels for industry from the earth’s natural resources in an unsustainable way. This is a campaign to raise awareness about encouraging companies to divest their money away from fossil fuels, and to encourage all students to think about their graduate careers, and ask the question of any organisations they work for about their ethical and sustainable investment practices.
With this campaign, you will be asking other students things like ‘how bad are bananas?’ You will be making students and staff think about the carbon footprint of food production and sales around the world and asking things like what has the highest carbon footprint – a bunch of bananas or a pair of new jeans?
