Partner Colleges Guide 2014

Page 1

HELLO!

A massively warm welcome to SUBU! The Full Time Offices are recent graduates of BU who have been elected by the student body to work at SUBU full time for 1 year. Thier job is to represent students across all areas of the university including Partner Colleges.

Partner College students are just as much a part of BU as students that study at Talbot & Lansdowne – so make sure you take advantage of everything we have on offer! Meet your Full-Time Elected Officers:

Chloe son, il del-W Schen sident Pre

BEU SP RU NT ESID

Peter Briant, VP Lansdowne

SUBU

VP LANSDOWNE

Chloe Schendel-Wilson: SU President - I represent you on issues locally and nationally. Peter Briant: VP Lansdowne - I represent all the students that study at the Lansdowne Campus to make sure their voice is heard.

SUBU VP EDUCATION

Ellie Mayo-Ward: VP Education - If you have any academic issues, I will work on them on your behalf. Reece Pope: VP Welfare - I work on representing minority groups and run campaigns around dignity, diversity and equality.

As a Partner Student you also have Kerry, your own dedicated SUBU staff member who will keep you up to date with opportunities and news of how you can get involved with SUBU.

YOU & SUBU

As a Partner College student, when it comes to SUBU, you will fall into one of two categories:

1) Full Members of SUBU (if you are on a Franchised course) or

2)Associate members of SUBU (if you are on a Validated course)*

How it works:

ALL Partner students are able to access Advice, be a Student Rep, do some Volunteering and take part in Nerve Media. You can all get into events at The Old Fire Station – no difference there at all! However, there are a few things that as an associate student, you cannot do: Associate members can join clubs and societies, but not run them; eg. you could not be the President of a club. You are also not able to vote or stand in elections, or propose or vote on motions in general meetings. This is because all validated students are full members of their college’s students’ union. *If you are unsure if your course is Franchised or Validated, please check with your Programme Administrator or Course Leader.

WHAT IS SUBU ABOUT? Students define the direction SUBU takes, giving you complete control over how life changing your student experience at BU can be.

SUBU follows 5 main ideas, we call them strategic themes, to make sure you get the very best out of us:

SUBU is independent from the University, so although most of the time we work positively and collaboratively with BU, we also work on holding BU to account on your behalf.

A MAJOR COLLECTIVE FORCE FOR ALL STUDENTS From hundreds of students going on a charity hitchhike and raising thousands of pounds, or the 700 student reps coming together to improve your course.

HELPING STUDENTS TO REALISE THEIR POTENTIAL From building an amazing CV through volunteering opportunities, or even running in the SUBU elections.

CREATING FRIENDSHIPS Uni is quite possibly the best time of your life, and we are here to make sure you enjoy it with life-long friends by your side.

UNDERSTOOD AND RECOGNISED & MORE ACCESSIBLE AND APPROACHABLE TO ALL STUDENTS

VISION:

BY 2016, SUBU WILL MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT UPON EVERY BU STUDENT’S JOURNEY. 4

There’s incredible diversity at BU and want to make sure that everyone has their say and feels valued – there’s 700 student reps who represent your views to the BU.

ETHICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL Green initiatives underpin everything we do; from the paper we print on to the t-shirts worn by the staff in our bar.

SUBU is run by students and full time staff and is led by your four Full Time Elected Officers: Chloe, Peter, Ellie and Reece. Everything SUBU does is about improving your experience where you study and our vision and values influence every decision we make.

We are non-profit organization and every penny made in The Old Fire Station, our bars and shops goes back to improving the services that we can provide for you. This includes things like the Students’ Union media, Nerve, or allowing you to set up your own club or society.

5

STUDENT COUNCILS Each of the Full Time Officers takes responsibility for an elected student council, each one made up of current students and focussing on a specific area. The four councils are:

The Activities Council ACTIVITIES

COUNCIL

Led by the President, the Activities Council represents you and runs campaigns that involve you with SUBU, the University and community.

The Welfare Council WE L FARE

COUNCIL

Led by the Vice President Welfare, deals with matters involving minority groups and diversity, student welfare and equal opportunities

The Education Council EDUCATION

COUNCIL

Led by the Vice President Education, this council focuses on academic matters, representing you in these to the university.

The Lansdowne Council LANSDOWNE

COUNCIL

Headed up by the Vice President Lansdowne, the Lansdowne Council looks at issues that specifically affect students at the Lansdowne Campus.

Franchised students can stand in the elections so check out our website www.subu.org.uk to find out more.

Ideas

We take your your ideas, very seriously. Every idea submitted to us is considered and taken to the relevant council for discussion. Ideas can be about us at SUBU, BU or Bournemouth in general. From here, the council vote on whether to make the idea a reality or, if they can’t agree, they may send it to one of our ‘Student Shout’ events to be voted on. You can submit your ideas on our website, www.subu.org.uk/ideas

6

Link Reps

LINK REPS

In an addition to the 4 councils above, we have positions for Partner College students at Link Reps. We recruit at least 1 student from each Partner College to represent the students and Student Reps at their college and act as a SUBU representative. This is great opportunity for you to shape the HE experience at your place of study! No specific skills or experience are required. For more information check out the Partner College page on the website or email kdean@bournemouth.ac.uk

Now you know what SUBU is, let’s take a walk on the wild side and do something completely new. You can quite literally skydive, trek in Morocco, edit a magazine, run your own club or society, run a campus-wide campaign, and even help lead your Students’ Union, a £3 million turnover charitable organisation. You don’t need us to tell you how competitive it is in the job market. Employers are always telling us they look

for those ‘extra’ elements that make you impossible to ignore. So for your own benefit, take us for all we’ve got and make sure you’re the cream of the crop. See your university life as like a cake – it’s only as good as the ingredients, so don the apron and get cooking (and yes, we do have a Baking Society) These next pages will guide you through every single opportunity we’ve got going, so get your notepad and start planning.

7

Be a partner in your uni experience Student Reps exist to make your experience better. There’s one for every 20 students, so a rep is never far away! You can recognize a student rep by their distinctive purple hoody*. At the beginning of the year you and your course mates will elect the rep responsible for representing views on your course. This is important to ensure they are representing students’ best interests. Your newly appointed rep will go on to receive training from SUBU to equip them with the skills to ENSURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD. This will involve both the issues affecting you on your course and the great things about your experience at your place of study. A Student Reps first port of call is to talk to students and gather opinions on a variety of issues. They will then take this to course leaders and staff and feed back to you what happened as a result. *Only Franchised students will recieve a rep hoody.

The rep system gives every student the chance to speak out and make every student’s experience a better one. 8
