SHOPPING TIPS
B
uying vintage clothes can be exciting because you can find designer ítems at good price. But have in mind that you are going to spend a lot of time looking through rails and rails of clothes and you may not find anything. Check out the condition: It sounds obvious but if you skip this you can find surprises when you have arrived home. Missing buttons, the zipper in not working, the fabric is too old and it is not going to last for more than a wash. The main areas you need to check: armpits, buttons, zippers and the slips and bottom borders to confirm they are not scratched or wasted. Do not think about the size: Vintage labels may not be the same as now. Have in mind that shapes and sizes, as well as trends have changed a lot. You need to make sure that the piece suits you, so do not be afraid to try it on. Normally, vintage ítems are one or two sizes up from the today´s fits depending on the decade they came from, this means that if you are a size 8 now, you will probably need a 10, or 12 on vintage ítems. Talk to the assistants, they will help you find what you are looking for. Also, some of the pieces have a very interesting background that maybe you want to know about. They are the only ones that can tell you about them. Do not buy anything that may need a lot of repairs: it just does not make sense to buy a broke jacket just because you think that it can be repaired. Some places where you can find vintage clothes are Vintage Kilo Fairs, University Vintage Fair, vintage boutiques, and second hand stores. Also, you can find them online, on websites like arizonavintage.com. Written by: Ana Riviera Designed by: Anthony thomas

3 Pieces, 3 looks. W
ith these tips, you can easily transform one core garment to work in any situation. Whack it on in the morning and effortlessly change your look by switching up other pieces of clothing and accessory, depending on whether you want to look more formal, edgier or all glammed up. Sorted! Casual A-lined Black Dress School Girl vibes: Who knew you could wear your little black dress to a 9 am group seminar without looking overdressed? Wear it under a cosy, long cardigan and wrap a voluminous scarf around your neck, allowing the ends of it to hang around your hips. Then, tie a thin faux leather belt on your waist over all the layers to appear both put-together and casual. Compliment with a pair of suede ankle boots. Go for either black/grey or brown/copper tones throughout the look, with freely having and/ or adding white bits in as well. Rock Chick: It is a common misconception that being edgy means being tomboyish when it comes to how you dress. If that floats your boat then for sure, however you can make a black dress look cute’n’cool by pairing it up with coal grey denim skirt overalls and knee-high boots. Night Out: Want something different this time than your go-to mini dress? Look no further. Tie a statement/designer belt on your waist and wear strappy heels (matching the belt’s colour if possible) and suddenly your whole outfit will look a lot more expensive than anything you could even afford. Checked Flannel Shirt School Girl vibes: Button the shirt all the way up, tuck the hem in mum jeans and finish the look off with an oversized denim jacket with its sleeves rolled up. If you’ve got glasses, wear them with pride with this look, and if not, just get cheap frames from an accessory shop! Slip into a pair of leather loafers and go wow everyone.
Rock Chick: This look is absolute fire - or how does this sound to you: high waist patent leather trousers, buttoned-up shirt with its ends tied together on the waist, a shiny black tie and chunky platform shoes. So chic. Night Out: Wear a white body with an open back under a just-above-the-knee denim skirt and tie the flannel shirt on your waist from its arms. Make it fancier by adding a black velvet choker and same coloured ballerinas and you’re sure to be the sassiest looking girl on the dance floor. If you still need more convincing, remember that by wearing this you will be the lucky one with something warm to wrap on when you are walking back home at 3am. Black Lacey Bustier School Girl vibes: Yeah, you probably would not think a sexy bustier is something you would wear to public, however wear it under an army green blazer with only a little bit of lace showing underneath and a small silk scarf tied around your neck. Keep your trousers simple (read: back skinny jeans) and wear oxford flats in your feet. Suddenly, you are the fashionista of the office. Rock Chick: This look is mainly inspired by Versus’ SS17 show and its cool rock chick looks. Pair your bustier up with a long sleeveless duster jacket, black flowy palazzo trousers and statement sandals. Simple as that (and stunning). Night Out: Talking of simple, this outfit is all about it: a pretty bustier plus a puffy chiffon skirt and wedge heels. You will look like you have been pulled out of an old, dreamy, romantic book - and guess what? You are the heroine.

Beaut Vlogg Review

ty ggers ew Y
ouTube vlogging is gaining more and more popularity every day and some of the most famous vloggers are the beauty vloggers. Through the years, I have been following dozens of them and have been gaining ideas and inspiration from their videos. They are the perfect source of information about all kinds of make-up products and different techniques. So here, I pick my top 4 beauty guru’s that I absolutely love. Carli ByBel Her channel has almost 5 million subscribers and she is making collaborations with a leading make up brands. She is doing lots of “Get ready with me” make up tutorials, showing looks that are more dramatic, her videos are great for special occasion inspiration, but in her channel, you can find make up routines for daytime as well. She has big eyes and full eyebrows, she is always playing with different color eye shadows, but her secret weapon is the eyeliner. Most of the products that she is using are high end but she always recommends a similar affordable drugstore product. Shaaanxo Her channel has nearly 3 million subscribers and she is making lots of reviews and first impression videos on different makeup products. She has unique makeup style, usually using bright lipsticks and eye shadows. Her looks are sweet and feminine, and her makeup techniques are spot-on. Lipsticks are her weapon, I still have not seen her with a colour that does not look good on her.
If you need help with choosing the right colour or brand lipstick, this is the channel that you are searching for. In her videos, she is using both – high end and drugstore products. This year she made series of Halloween-inspired make up videos, which are absolutely amazing! Lauren Curtis She is Australian beauty blogger and on her channel, she has over 3 million subscribers. Her make up tutorials are more simple and applicable for everyone’s daily routine. In her videos, she is showing that less is more – flawless base, highlighter, big lashes, defined brows and you are ready. She is with fair skin so she is making videos with tips and tricks for redness, dark circles, and correcting blemishes on a light skin in general. Like Shaaanxo, she is making lots of reviews and first impression videos. She is using mainly high-end makeup products, but sometimes she makes videos using only drugstore make up. Michelle Phan She is one of the first beauty vloggers that I follow, now she has almost 9 million subscribers and her own makeup brand - EM Michelle Phan. Since the very beginning in her videos, she is using affordable products and making simple tutorials. She has many videos that help with choosing the right product, simple tricks how your mascara or cushion compact to last longer or how to wing your eyeliner perfectly. In addition, I like that her reviews are always helpful and honest. She is known for that she can transform herself into everything using only everyday products. Zoella She has more than 11 million subscribers in total, which makes her one of the most famous beauty sensations. She is mainly posting videos about her favorite beauty items and the best thing is that she is absolutely honest about her opinion. Her videos are perfect for every beauty beginner. Zoella makes step-by-step tutorials on her everyday makeup look that everyone can remake at home. However, she knows how to make every simple look glamorous. She is using both high-end and drugstore products, which makes her channel even better. Also, she is making themed videos so you can find ideas for every occasion. Her channel is a mix of makeup tutorials, product reviews and funny videos. Wirtten by: Zlatna Nedeva Designed by: Anthony Thomas

Botox Patches. I
n a recent video, Australian make up artist And vlogger Stephanie Lange introduced her viewers to the Innoxa SOS No Tox Eye Patch. The patch has built in needles that penetrate the skin so that it delivers hyaluronic acid deep into the skin without the pain of Botox. Each patch will smooth out wrinkles, refresh and pump under the eye. For it to have its full effect it needs to be left on for a minimum of two hours and should ideally be kept on overnight. The technique which is an alternative to Botox, is supposed to give the same affect but doesn’t have any of the dangerous toxins. The eye patch needs to be used at least eight times to work their full effect and they will then last for up to four weeks compared to Botox which can last from three to six months depending on the procedure. Whilst the patch may be an alternative and more practical than injections, should vloggers be using their platform to advertise a product which could potentially be dangerous and harmful? Especially in a society where people struggle to accept themselves. As a vlogger with a large platform, with almost 900,000 subscribers in fact. Stephanie Lange should be concerned about those watching her videos. As she is a make up artist by trade there will be young girls that will be watching her videos in order to copy what she looks like. This is concerning considering that this is a product that clearly should not be used by anyone below their mid twenties. Too many products are now focusing on improving your look using unnatural ingredients which if went wrong could be very painful. The patch which is supposed to sit directly under the eye could cause intense swelling with worrying consequences. Before having Botox doctors can test you if you are worried
about any allergies. With the Innoxa eye patch there is no way to test if there are any allergies therefore using them could be potentially damaging especially with it being put so close to the eye. However, whilst there are many problems with the patch, they do not cost anywhere near the price of Botox done in a surgery, which can cost anything from £100 to £500. Alongside this, Botox can be painful and whilst the eye patch is described as irritating for five to ten minutes the pain should then go after. So for those who fear the pain of Botox this would be a great alternative. With advertising the patches on a platform as big as YouTube, it causes concern at just how anybody would be able to get hold and use the patches. Girls as young as 10 are now watching make-up tutorials to improve their look. In a day and age where everyone looks up to celebrities such as The Kardashians who are no strangers to enhancement, watching reviews of possibly damaging products will only encourage children into thinking that the only way to look beautiful is by changing their looks instead of staying natural. While these patches will work for some people, I think that advertising the Innoxa SOS No Tox Eye Patch on a very modern social media platform is dangerous to society; even though not all of Stephanie Lange’s audience will be young and some will benefit from using the patch. Vloggers should be careful at what products they are showing on their channel and keep in mind the age of their audience. Written by: Naomi Doddridge Designed by: Anthony Thomas

Eyelash Permanent vs. Eyelash Extensions Since I always wanted to make my life easier in the morning, I have decided to make a change on my eyelashes. Spent hours and hours of reading reviews and watching vloggers, until I have decided to get the eyelash permanent. This will save you so much time if you actually consider doing any of the procedures. Eyelash permanent It lasts up to three months and it spares you of using the curler every morning. You can use makeup or any other product you want on your eyes for as long as you want, but only 24 hours after the procedure was done. If you are a young professional, really busy, with deadlines and you really value those 15 extra minutes of sleep every morning, you might consider getting this done. You only need to apply mascara and you are good to go. 3 minute make-up routine. I got them done for only £30 in Boscombe, at Blush Beauty Lounge. I am adding this here because I have tried it, it worked, and it is worth the money. The one thing that no one tells you in their reviews is that you still need tinting. Tinting is a separate process where you (obviously) DIY the eyelashes so that they have more impact and look more voluminous. The other thing that no one tells you is that it costs extra £45. Therefore, I bought an eyelash and eyebrow DIY myself, Diva 30 Day Mascara, for no more than £2.50. No side effects, no wasting time and money, but really easy and effective. Bear in mind that: it is not harmful, you have no restrictions of what you can do to your eyes and eyelashes, and, the most important, the results are different from one person to another. If you already have long
thick eyelashes, getting a permanent will only make them pop even more; but if your eyelashes are short and thin, then you might consider the extensions. Eyelash Extensions They last about a month, maybe two if you are lucky. Extensions are convenient for those who have short and thin eyelashes as every piece of hair is applied individually to your eye. They give the effect of false eyelashes, and you do not have to apply them every day. Having said this, I still did not get them even though I was tempted; hence a lot of people had a bad experience with them. Some reviews say that it affects your natural eyelashes, stopping them from growing; other say that once the extensions start falling they take with them the natural ones as well, therefore, NO EYELASHES AT ALL; some say they paid too much and the extensions lasted for no more than a week; and so on. To make things clear, I have asked the lady that did my permanent. She said that eyelashes can break and can damage the eye if they are not being taken care of properly. However, it is unlikely for the eye to have no eyelashes at all (natural or false) after getting this done. One other thing that I did not like in particular is that I could not do my make-up. This is one of the maintenance requirements for the eyelashes; also, you are not allowed to sleep with your face down, so that the pillow will not break them. My reasons were not major; therefore, if you think they suit you, go get them done! Always make sure you analyze every option (pros and cons) and you choose what suits you best.

CELEBRITIES private vs public life? We live in an age where becoming a celebrity is as easy as ever, with people often asking the question: do they deserve privacy? As a celebrity, they are placed into the public view. Take The Royal Family for example, they cannot help being famous but are instead born into this life. They should be allowed privacy for this reason. One of the strongest calls for privacy has come from Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate, who have experienced various incidents of photographers intruding on them and their children’s lives. They never asked for Prince George and Princess Charlotte to become Royals, yet this is how they have to grow up. However, it can also be argued that due to their public life, and the huge public interest in it, that they should simply just get used to the fact that the paparazzi will want to gain pictures of them and their children. The Queen has also encountered arguments over privacy following the death of Princess Diana in 1997. When the news was received by The Royal Family, they chose not to rush down to London to grieve with the British public, but instead to stay in Balmoral, the Royal families’ Scottish residence. The alternative was to abandon her two grandchildren who had just lost their mother, the ‘people’s princess’. More recently there has also been a series of incidents in the YouTubing community.

For vlogger and beauty power couple Zoe Sugg (Zoella to her fans) and Alfie Deyes (PointlessBlog), it is not an uncommon sight for fans to ask for photos in the street or even showing up at their house for autographs. With their lives being so public on the Internet, surely being recognised is just part of the job. In March this year Alfie himself acknowledged this during an interview on ITV’s This Morning:
“
It’s really hard, and because I film everything, I love showing everything, so I probably encourage quite a lot of it.
”
These kind of celebrities deserve less privacy because they are the ones who choose to put so much about themselves online. So many celebrities these days do it and they share intimate details about their lives – so how can they want a private life when they offer information so publicly? Everyone deserves privacy, but as a celeb you must accept that part of the job. You are in the public spotlight and if you’re using Snapchat and Instagram everyday – you are just furthering it. Techo-esteem This month has seen the arrival of Netflix’s ‘Black Mirror’ and although fiction, the first episode is spine-chillingly accurate.
NM // 20
For those of you who have not yet seen the premier of season three Black Mirror let me give you the 411. The episode, named Nosedive, takes us to a pastel coloured town where everyone is overbearingly friendly. Soon enough we realise why. This dystopian futuristic world is a place where people rate each other out of 5 stars after every single encounter. In other words, we are all Uber drivers in the world of Nosedive. Your social media footprint dictates everything you have in your life, from your social standing to your career prospects and housing. We follow Lacie (Bryce Dallas Howard), a woman in her early-mid 20’s who is a little too over invested in her ranking. Throughout the day she shields her face with a fake and somewhat awkward smile being overly nice to everyone she meets. The show has been described by Netflix as “twisted, high-tech near future, where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.” However, get rid of the awesome high-tech projections and the electric cars and we are disturbed by the fact that this episode is all too real. Throughout the episode Lacie continues to gain ratings in order to acquire ‘the perfect life’ and complete happiness. She takes photos of her perfectly constructed food, her adorable teddy bear and even photos of herself at elitist events and then waits desperately for ratings and likes. Starting to sound familiar? Nerve spoke to students and asked them whether or not they would consider getting rid of their social media sites.
“
International student Nina Nagel said: whilst living and studying in another country, social media is one of the only ways I feel connected when we can’t physically meet
”
Second year university student Leyan Yucel said:
giving up social media if I felt it “ I’dwasconsider taking over my life and I felt addicted to it or in danger
Statistics show that 2.34 billion people use social media sites. But what most of us are not aware of are the dangers they pose. As human beings we are known to possess a fundamental need to compare ourselves to others. In a study undertaken by Nesi and Prinstein (2015) they found that the role of technology based social comparison and feedback seeking was found a lot in the development of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Given that our social networking sites tend to show a distorted portrayal of humans and their lives, it should not be surprising that individuals are concluding that everyone is happier than them. Last year, Australian model Essena O’Neill decided to remove her Instagram and the millions of people who followed her. She said: “For me, it personally consumed me. It wasn’t like living in a 3D world. I remember obsessively checking for likes and comments”. Essena has now launched a site called ‘letsbegamechangers.com’ which features creative and inspiring content such as blogs on veganism, creative imagery and poems. Social media is not all bad. Used for marketing and as a platform for important news, the benefits of this technology are definitely there. However Black Mirror really helps its audience see how destructive false reality and self-comparison can be to their selfesteems. The last scene of ‘Nosedive’ shows Lacie in prison screaming and cursing. Although this sounds like one of the worst possible places she could be, the audience soon realise that she is the freest she has been in the whole episode. Social media sites are found to be extremely addictive, but this episode answers the question: if social media really is a drug, what are the side effects? REVENGE PORN:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Being arrested for sending a photo on your phone seems ridiculous. However, in this day and age, it can happen. These are not the photos of your dog looking cute or from Friday night’s Lollipop, but instead those explicit photos aimed to be private. Over the last couple of years smart phones and social media have become a staple in most lives, with the rise of revenge porn following in pursuit. Revenge porn is the sharing of private and sexual materials of another person without their consent in aim to cause embarrassment or distress (gov.uk). This could be uploading it online, sending a photo via WhatsApp or even handing your phone around with the picture on screen.
porn were reported to the police, with 60% involving those under 25. And it was also revealed victims as young as 11 were reporting their experiences (BBC). Psychology student Evie, whose name has been changed, was a victim of revenge porn. She said: “Years ago my ex-boyfriend sent a video of me to my former friends who shared it further to people I knew, and he even threatened to show my parents. The worse thing was that I didn’t even know he recorded me. “I kept to myself for months after, and shunned myself. I’m just glad it never went online for millions to see.”
Anyone can fall victim to this crime; who could forget the infamous iCloud hacks of 2014, where numerous celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton had their private photographs leaked.
Some people may think someone must be insane to send nude photographs or videos to a random person, but it is not always that simple. In many cases, such as the one quoted, it is done by people that you think you can trust and you may not even be aware.
Though finally being made illegal in the UK 2015, this is still a large issue. Last year over 1000 cases of revenge
Speaking to Maddie, a victim whose name has also been changed for the purposes of this interview, she
explained: “I was humiliated, it was the most embarrassed I have ever been in my life. But the worst part was how I had no control, people I knew and even those I didn’t were seeing me naked, and it was disgusting.” Maddie is just another example of revenge porn sent by an ex online. But unfortunately at the time this was not illegal. It is important to remember that just because you have these photographs on your phone does not mean you own them. The truth is people do not understand the implications to their actions. With 2000 revenge porn websites worldwide, any of us could fall victim. Being a fairly new law people still do not seem to the seriousness of it, but this offence can actually result in a two-year jail sentence. So please, before you show your friends the new photos you have been sent on Snapchat or the photos of your ex, just think. But equally think before you send. Microaggression While blatant racism and prejudice is not something most POC (people of colour) will experience at face value, it does happen. Unfortunately, hidden beneath the surface of some people resides an inclination to be dismissive, stereotypical and to make assumptions based on someone else’s ethnicity, gender or religion and this can often manifest itself in the form of microaggressions. This is something that most POC do actually experience. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, microaggressions consist of acts or things white people say to POC without having any real awareness of the hidden meaning or effects it could have on the person. Here are some of the most common examples:
Regardless of colour, people are not walking, breathing caricatures. The colour of someone’s skin is only a fraction of who they are as a person and no two people are alike.
“You’re not like most black people…”
Between models on catwalks, movies and adverts, you could be forgiven for believing that blonde hair and blue eyes were the definition of beauty. Except they are not. It is important to understand that beauty falls on a spectrum and each colour is beautiful. To limit yourself to only one race of people is to deny yourself an opportunity to find love in other places.
How can you act black? There are over one billion black people across this planet, each with very different tastes, personality and ways of life. Inferring there is only one way to act black is to ignore the rich complexity of the culture and condense it into ghetto living, saggy pants wearing and gangster rap listening stereotypes, perpetuated in Hollywood films.

This has been frustrating for Amelia and international student from Nigeria, whose named has been changed for the purpose of this interview: ‘“A lot of the time I hear people say he or she is from Africa”. That baffles me because ideally in this day and age, you should know no one is just from ‘Africa or Asia’, they are from ‘Nigeria, Japan, India, Botswana’ specifically…”
“I’m not attracted to Asian guys…”
“Where are you originally from?” “England.” “No, where were you born?” “England.” At this point it is very obvious what answer they really want to hear- some place exotic, foreign, and inherently ‘other’. Obviously, their intent was never to offend, but when a white person asks someone of colour this question, even though that person sounds as English as they are, it is as if they are questioning their identity and forcing them to qualify their Englishness. Whilst it would be slightly unfair to call this racist, it is undoubtedly misguided and unfair. If someone was born and grew up in this country, regardless of what ethnicity they are, why is their British nationality second-guessed? In multicultural Britain, it is a source of pride to see diversity and people from all parts of the world and walks of life accepted with such open arms and warm smiles to this country. However, with that
same multiculturalism it is important to open up the definitions of what it means to be English, because being English should never be restricted to what your birth certificate says, shackled to the language your parents speak at home or chained to the colour of your skin, being English is about what your heart says. Nigel Farage constantly complains about how Britain is becoming overly PC, which can be easy to believe when you have been part of a demographic that has never truly experienced racism. Conversations about microaggressions are not ploys to call out white people as racists or POC trying play the victim card. Instead it is an attempt to raise awareness of how people can be affected by the things we say and to help each other avoid situations where someone may feel uncomfortable or hurt, ultimately this is about respect. THE SMART PILL MYTH AND WHY THEY DON’T
MAKE YOU SMARTER It sounds too good to be true: a pill that makes you study harder, longer and faster. Tempting, so it is understandable that around one fifth of students admit to
taking non-prescribed medication to help them work (TheTabOfficial 2014).
NM // 26
The most popular of these ‘smart’ pills goes by the name of modafinil and it is used to treat narcolepsy and daytime sleepiness when prescribed by doctors. It works primarily by releasing CNS (central nervous system) histamines in the brain and initiating the stimulation of various neurotransmitters by binding with their corresponding receptors. It is the chemical binding of these molecules that creates its wakefulnesspromoting response. A common brand of modafinil is Provigil, which is both illegal to supply and buy without a prescription. An alternative drug also used as a cognitive-enhancer is Ritalin, a drug mainly used to treat ADHD, again illegal to buy and supply. Harvard and Oxford Universities have announced Modafinil as “The world’s first safe smart drug” with little risk when taken in the short term (Zand 2016). It is also seen to be the most effective in providing a beneficial cognitive response for tasks that are longer and more challenging (Battleday and Brem 2015), so it is no surprise that students are tempted to use them for late-night revision sessions. A number of students have even reported feeling more alert and focused when on the drug. Talking to the Guardian in 2016 one student explained how she felt she ‘…could study for 10 hours and then go to the gym’ feeling as if she was ‘superhuman’. Although this all sounds great so far, there are an abundance of reasons why modafinil might not be all that it is cracked up to be. Firstly, this smart pill does not replace sleep. It has been seen that students who have used the drug as a sleep alternative can suffer from a range of symptoms such as: • • • • • • • •
Headaches Drained of energy Rashes Loss of appetite Constant need for the bathroom Insomnia Anxiety Dehydration
It also is known that sleep provides an important time for your memories to consolidate. Missing out on this vital period can result in declines of cognitive ability and all that time spent studying would be wasted as you fail to remember what you have tried to learn. Writing for the Psychological Bulletin psychologists Smith and Farah concluded that smart pills are “inconclusive and ambiguous”. Although the response so far has been seen to be beneficial, there is no significant evidence to show what effects long-term use of these drugs can be. The European Medicines Agency has also gone as far to say that modafinil should not be prescribed at all for less severe conditions due to risks of serious skin reactions, depression, suicidality, psychosis and adverse cardiovascular effects. It is also important to note a lot of medication should not be mixed with smart pills, including birth control tablets. Speaking to a second year Bournemouth student who we shall call Chloe, she explained her hesitation and worries about these popular pills: “I think not knowing if what you are actually taking is what it says it is puts people off - it could be anything from dishwasher powder to sugar in the pills. You never know exactly how trustworthy these so-called ‘government-approved sites’ can be.” There is also the whole ‘unfair advantage’ aspect. Would you be happy comparing your exam results when other students have been popping the smart pills and you have not? Now you know the facts; it is up to you on what choice you make. But remember, you can never be entirely sure what is in the foreign pills you ordered online, and who says you are not going to be one of the ones suffering from severe side effects? T
Tis the season to be nostalgic With Christmas just around the corner, it is time to take a look back at the nostalgia-filled toys of our youth. Here are just 10 of our old favourites: 1) Tamagotchi – The Tamagotchi brought a lot of excitement to a generation. Whether it was watching the tiny egg wriggle and hatch into a digital pet, feeding them, or even seeing the dreaded skull icon on the screen; it could keep a child occupied for hours. This was the ultimate gadget, with one simple rule… keep your pet alive, or if your school were cruel enough to ban them, pass the responsibility on to one of your parents (if you were brave enough). 2) Electronic diaries – Password and voice-activated journals were the perfect place to write all about the top-secret goings on in your life, hidden away from the praying hands of family and friends. Writing all about the excitement of the day or about that one person you fancied at school. You thought no one would find out, until they eventually did. Sadly, they were not as secure as you first thought. 3) Stretch Armstrong – What better way to spend your time as a kid than stretching and pulling the arms and legs of a blonde man in a sporty attire to lengths of up to four or five feet? Although he was supposed to be almost unbreakable, the ultimate goal was to stretch him until he did eventually surrender. 4) Scalextrics – Whizzing remote control cars around a track always ended up with cars flying left, right and centre around the room. It was also a great way to stir up a bit of sibling rivalry. Screams of ‘You knocked my car off’ and ‘You’re on the wrong track’ were often accompanied by regular bursts of outrage and cars being thrown around the room. 5) Troll Dolls – These dolls were admittedly creepy looking but still every child wanted one. Coming in all shapes and sizes, with hair in a variety of rainbow colours, they appeared in multiple different forms. From key rings, to pencil toppers, to plush toys, to necklaces and even a Troll-themed Barbie - they completely took over in the 1990’s-2000s. 6) Furbies – These fluffy creatures came in a variety of different colours, with blinking eyes and moving ears and feet. Furbies would come pre-programmed speaking ‘Furbish’, but would supposedly in time come to learn words of the English language. But this was just more nonsense that no one could understand. 7) Yo-yos – Yo-yos saw a resurgence in the late 1990s. Voted the ‘craze of the century’ by The British Association of Toy Retailers, you were either a yo-yo-ing master or quite the opposite. 8) TY Beanie Babies – You could not escape the Beanie Babies craze even if you tried. Whether at a Christmas bazaar, summer fete or a sleepover, there they were piled up, possessing you to buy them. Favouritism would be continuously switched between each toy, or whichever one was the newest and shiniest. 9) Bop It! – The simple yet addictive game with commands that are probably still ingrained into every player’s brain. ‘Flick it’, ‘Twist it’, ‘Pull it’ and of course ‘Bop it’ to name a few. Everyone knew someone who was an unbreakable Bop It! genius. 10) Game Boy Colour – Game Boys were, to the children of the late 20th century, what game consoles are to the children of today; except they were small enough to be portable and you could even buy one in Pikachu-yellow. Pokemon and Super Mario were the ultimate games to play, even if they were in 8-bit. Everyone misses those days. fter coming together in 2012 in Sydney, Australia, the three-turned -ix-piece band ‘DMA’s’ have been making a name for themselves across the UK in the past year. They have made appearances at big name festivals such as Reading & Leeds Festival, T in the Park, and even their own secret set at Glastonbury Festival. Nerve spoke to frontman Johnny Took about their fondest memories from festival season and what touring is really like. Whilst they have made their mark in the UK music scene this year, their most memorable highlights involved gigs at a more global scale. “T in the Park was really good. That was a great festival, it was kinda cool because it was raining and the crowd still stuck it out. Down The Rabbit Hole in the Netherlands was great and Fuji Rock in Japan, there’s just

nothing like it. I really like it there.” With so many festivals under their belt, DMA’s have seen their fair share of success. But rather than thinking too much about the future, they instead focus on remaining wholeheartedly grateful for every opportunity they have had. “We’ve been pretty fortunate with the ones we have been to, like Glastonbury was pretty cool. We got stuck in the mud twice.” However, Johnny also reflected on the downsides of touring and how a busy schedule can sometimes get in the way. “We left 20 minutes after [the Glastonbury set]. Touring is a lot like that sometimes, you think you get to play amazing festivals but even at Latitude we were playing on the same stage as Kurt Vile, we wanted to stick around and check it but we
had to go.” The band have played a whopping 124 concerts in just 2016 alone, but DMA’s are trying to find ways of making the gigs more exciting for fans and for themselves. “We’ve recently added ‘Step up the Morphine’ to the set which is nice because we’ve been able to play it for a while and a song only really starts to come together once you start playing it live a bit”. Since forming the band four years ago, DMA’s have gone from strength to strength, featuring at iconic festivals and making memorable debuts across the world. Their shows in the UK have now ended but they continue their travels in a European tour before heading home to Australia.

h en Jake Bugg performed in Bournemouth, he blew the crowd away. As soon as he came on stage, the energy in the venue shifted. Opening the show with on my one, the titular song off of his latest record, all I could think was “I really felt that.” The crowd lit up at the upbeat songs like Two Fingers and regardless of the fact Jake didn’t dance or even wink at his screaming fans, I had never felt more enthralled by an artist. He has his own charms, and that’s what made the show so authentic and genuine.

MUSIC James Vincent McMorrow gig Written by: George McMillan
P
erforming to a sold out Roundhouse in the heart of Camden, James Vincent McMorrow captivated an audience of 1,700 into complete silence at his biggest headline set to date. Playing alongside his four-piece band, McMorrow warmed the hearts of the London crowd on a bitterly cold Monday evening in October. Debuting tracks from his new album ‘We Move’ released only a month prior, alongside other hits from his back catalogue. His cover of Steve Winwood’s classic ‘Higher Love’ being a notable favourite of the crowds in which
you could hear a pin drop in between the powerful falsetto and solo piano played by McMorrow with no assistance from his band, a striking contrast from the original 80’s hit. He then proceeded to play through some of his less well known tracks which he timidly and almost unconvincingly introduced as “the funk portion of the show” breaking away from the Irish folk roots of his debut album released six years prior and displaying his newly crafted style - a luscious and tasteful blend of guitar, synth and harmonies. Despite a sold out show and a rapturous applause from the audience after every song without fail, James Vincent McMorrow has clearly not forgotten his roots. Taking time to give a heartfelt thanks to the audience, reminiscing on his first London show to 60 people stood on a couple of milk crates. His modesty only added to his charm.

“WE’RE INFLUENCED BY A LOT OF STUFF BUT HOPEFULLY THE MIX IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT ELSE IS AROUND AT THE MOMENT.” NM // 34
Two weeks ahead of their UK tour, Nerve speaks touring, recording and more with Natti Shiner, lead singer of up and coming pop band ‘Fickle Friends’. Although only recently coming onto the radar for many after an exhausting festival period for the band, such as their notable performance at Reading Festival, Fickle Friends have been grafting and perfecting their style over the past three years. Forming back in 2013, Natti moved from Liverpool down to Brighton to study at BIMM and met her fellow band mates. “I started the band straight away because I wanted to get a head start. It’s so competitive in your first year at music school because everyone is nabbing the best musicians.” Fickle Friends posted a demo online in early 2014, debuting their track ‘Swim’. This was released two years later after they signed to Polydor Records (home to some of the biggest and most legendary artists) with better production and a more beefed up sound. Drawing comparisons to the likes of ‘The 1975’ and ‘Haim’, the bands indie-pop feel good style consists primarily of funk infused syncopated guitar riffs, tight four-to-the-floor drums, and often contrasting bittersweet lyrics about feeling drowned in relationships or battling anxiety. All this is wrapped up in a snug blanket of warm synths and harmonies to create the unique sound that is Fickle Friends. The kind of music that sets the mood for a good night out, whether you like it or not your head is usually bopping and feet tapping by the end of every song. “Everything is a little bit derivative but we kind of fall between pop and indie, our record is a lot more pop but obviously people haven’t heard that yet. I think the problem is people can’t pigeonhole us because it falls somewhere in between… I’m not sure I could compare our new record to anything, obviously we’re influenced by a lot of stuff but
hopefully the mix is different from what else is around at the moment.” Surprisingly, many tracks released since the original release of ‘Swim’ have been “binned” such as ‘Play’, ‘Shake Her’ and arguably an audience favourite ‘For You’ as Natti explains, “They’re all songs that are dead, they’ve had their time and that’s it.” She even suggests that latest single ‘Cry Baby’ is a slightly outdated version of the bands new sound. “That’s still more on the indie pop end of things to be honest which is why we put that out next because, we didn’t want to put out a crazy pop track because it’s too far away from what people are familiar with. “I want the album to be out because it’s so different. Obviously there’s some old stuff on there but, everything out is so old.” Despite recording their record out in LA, the band still have a UK tour to prepare for, which includes their biggest headline show to date at the iconic London venue ‘Heaven’. “It’s been a bit of a ball ache the past few months, we got back from LA yesterday so I’m really jet lagged and we’ve got so much work to do on the set to make a new live set to change it up. “We’re very nervous because we haven’t got a lot of time until we have to do all our stuff for it, it’s a big venue. We’re nervous about selling enough tickets and design a lighting show and the set, it’s exciting but it’s very daunting.” Fickle Friends new track ‘Brooklyn’ is out now and you can catch them on tour from the 18th of November. Horror films: Terrifyingly bad?
1
Shocking and frightful- just two words that are often uttered from the mouths of horror film viewers upon leaving the cinema. Surely perfect adjectives to describe a movie of this genre, right? Well, the majority of the time they’re not used to praise the film’s sheer terror but are in fact referring to the weak storyline and awful acting that now seems to synonymous with most horrors. It is not just these 2 things which are making films of this nature quite frankly hard to watch however, it is more to do with the predictability and erringly similar plots that they all possess.
Each horror movie seems to contain the same archetypal characters regardless of whether they are directed by the same person or not.
that is put to them as ‘just your imagination’- until of course they are proved wrong and end up losing everything, exactly like Keri Russel’s character in Dark Skies (2013). Don’t forget about the stereotypical female character either, the one who is portrayed as completely stupid and is just awaiting her imminent death. This seemingly sexist character tends to feature less nowadays however, rightly replaced by a female protagonist instead; Blake Lively in The Shallows (2016), for example. But don’t panic because the final character is here to save the day, the classic hero who just happens to have that extra bit of know how in comparison to the other expendable characters. This person often appears as the ‘wise old head’, using their expertise to overcome the villain, just like Lin Shaye’s character in Insidious (2010).
You have got the main antagonist who can be human, alien or a paranormal apparition. The character that appears to exist regardless of how many exorcisms you perform or how many times you shoot them down. You Predictability is not the only down have also got the classic ‘non-believer’ who fall with these movies however, it is the completely implausible plots. seems to doubt everything and anything
NM // 36
You may be thinking: ‘how can Horror films be implausible, surely the whole concept of the genre is?’ Yes, you are probably right... but there is a certain limit to what an audience can perceive as believable. Take the Purge for example; how in any universe is it acceptable to legalise any crime for a specified period of time, even if it is a film? It is not realistic in any sense of the word. Let us not forget the acting either, whether it’s because of the poor screenplay or just amateur individuals, the majority of performances in some of these films is certainly not up to scratch with other genres. M Night Shyalaman’s, The Happening (2008) is a prime example of this. With a cast boasting the likes of Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel you’d expect something better than the end result, but perhaps surprisingly- Wahlberg was panned by both critics
7and fans alike, with some describing his performance as ‘comical’.
Granted not all horror films contain such mediocrity however. In recent years films like The Shallows (2016), Don’t Breathe (2016) and The Conjuring (2013) to name a few, have provided fresh takes on the genre. The latter has a novel plot and superb acting from its stellar cast, including Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Its success was epitomised with a sequel based on The Enfield Hauntings this year and plans have already been made for a third instalment allegedly involving Werewolves. This originality is proof that the genre may not be dying just yet but innovative horrors are certainly few and far between nowadays. -----------------------------------------------------------------Love a good horror? Gengahr are one of the freshest up-and-coming bands in the British Indie music scene. Named after the ghost-type PokĂŠmon, they are unapologetically different and prior to the beginning of their UK tour, Entertainment Editor Lily Coleman caught up with vocalist Felix Bushe to discuss their favourite gigs and what we should from the band expect in the future.
Words by Lily Coleman // Design by Agata Winiarska // Artwork gengahr.com
That’s a tough one. There’s been so many good ones [gigs]. All the festival stuff was exciting; it was a big deal for us playing the main stage this year at Green Man Festival. That came from playing [there] two years before when we opened the festival with another band. Getting back on stage a few years later was a pretty big moment for us.
dates, Felix shared what it felt like to finally achieve a goal in being able to create a physical album and when there will be more music to add to the list.
”Alongside their festival appearances this year, and their upcoming UK shows, Gengahr have seen much success. The four man band have played across the country, but have especially enjoyed the chance to tour with big Indie bands like Wolf Alice.
“We’ve recorded [new music] now so it’s just being mixed into one album and it’ll be out early next year. We’re going to play some of the new stuff when we tour.”
“It was good fun. We’ve toured with them a whole bunch of times now. We played with them in our first UK tour and it’s good to see that we’re still friends. It’s just nice playing with people you know, I guess it makes it that much more enjoyable.” In light of their imminent tour
“It’s cool, it’d be better maybe if it was a gold one or a platinum one… but no it’s pretty good. It was definitely a box that needed to be ticked for all of us.
When asked what the future has in store for Gengahr, Felix joked that he sees them “on a beach maybe” before sharing his true ambitions for the band. “I’m pretty cool with things right now. It’d be cool to have a whole stack of albums to be proud of you know rather than just the one. There’s a long way to go I think for us.”
Gengahr have described themselves as a “life affirming” band and are set to make a splash into the indie rock scene with their eerie-pop sound, but getting to where they are now wasn’t easy. Felix had some advice for those who are similarly seeking a career in music. “Be prepared for it to be harder than you possibly thought it could be. It’s taken us probably ten years to be in a position where we feel like we’re just about doing what we want to do now. It’s very difficult to make a career in music now, there’s only a small percentage of people who do it and actually are able to live off it. It’s not going to be profitable thing for you, but if its what you love and what you want to do then I think that’s important. For us we always wanted to be in a band and we get to do that now so the fact that we get to travel and tour makes the whole thing a bit more special. Being with your friends recording music and writing music everyday is not a bad life.”
Gengahr begin their tour in Sheffield on November 16th.

WINTER FESTIVALS A
s the nights feel longer, the weather gets colder and our thoughts slowly turn towards Christmas, the atmosphere could not be any more different to that which surrounds summer festivals. But winter festivals have had a major resurgence in recent years and this year the UK is set to host some of the best talent in a variety of genres. Whilst they do not boast the epic scale of Glastonbury or the wild themes of Boomtown, they do offer a unique experience at a fraction of the price. The Big Reunion – 18th-20th November/25th-27th November One of the most popular winter festivals is annually held at Butlins, Skegness and is renowned for its impressive line-ups. Held over two consecutive weekends, The Big Reunion is most similar to a conventional summer festival and always draws a huge crowd. Previously it
has featured big acts such as Example, Lethal Bizzle and Danny Howard. 2016 lives up to the high expectations, with Rudimental and Hannah Wants headlining the festival, and key performances from Blonde, Sigala and Shift K3y. Tickets to The Big Reunion will set you back £175 for two days, including accommodation.
sure a fantastic weekend of top quality music. The Warehouse Project: October-January Whilst not a festival as such, The Warehouse Project in Manchester hosts a series of events across the city and sees some of the UK’s biggest acts take over three key venues – Albert Hall, Granada Studios and the city’s Store Street warehouse. DJ EZ and Skepta are just two of the biggest and well-known names on the list, but tickets are selling out fast for some of the key dates in the line-up. Closing on January 1st, the 12-week music event is a celebration of house and techno music and tickets are currently being sold for around £40 if they are not already sold out.
Skamouth: 25th-28th November: Skamouth flourishes in terms of the number and variety of acts they host across the weekend. Both a Summer and a Winter music festival, Skamouth weekend are held at the Great Yarmouth Vauxhall Holiday Park and weekend tickets are available for as little as £75, a reasonable price if you’re interested in seeing ska, reggae, mod and northern soul legends. This years line up features big name acts such as Winter festivals have so much to offer with a Ken Boothe and The Blockheads, whilst a selec- wide and somewhat eclectic variety of music tion of DJs are also set to take the stage to en styles to enjoy without breaking the bank.

Don’t be silent if someone is being violent Should it be acceptable for people walking home late at night to be scared of who might be lurking in the dark? Harassment is a form of violence and it should not continue to be a ‘social norm’ or accepted in society any longer. Due to recent news, following the attacks on model Gigi Hadid and TV star Kim Kardashian by ‘prankster’ Vitalii Sediuk, the majority of people in countries internationally have been up in arms about the topic of harassment. But harassment, whether it be physical, sexual or verbal, is happening all the time with or without the media unveiling it. Whilst men can be subject to sexual harassment,
“Females are more likely to be wolf whistled at or called names on the streets...” beeped at by a passing car, approached in the dark of night or groped provocatively in a club. Shaming people is not acceptable just because it has become common on social media and the type of clothes you wear does not mean that someone is ‘asking’ to be sexually harassed. We should not have to experience this and shouldn’t have to wear more clothes on a night out to prevent being indecently touched because the harsh

reality is that wearing more clothes probably wouldn’t stop that from happening anyway. Young men are deemed to be tough, strong and independent – so if this situation was to happen to a young man, they might not want to tell anyone due to the social stigma. However, no one should feel alone. Male or female, speak to someone, don’t feel alone and afraid. The more people that are made aware of harassment, the less it will happen. Famous businesswoman and feminist, Amber Rose has recently completed her second ‘Slutwalk’ making people aware of gender equality, sexuality and sexual violence whilst shifting the paradigm of rape culture. Anyone and everyone is invited to join in with this event, promoting equality as a whole and promoting individuality –
“No one deserves to be publically shamed on social media...” this is just as bad as harassing someone in person. What ever happened to free will?
So to put this into fewer words...
“Let people wear what they want, do and act how they like and let them be their own person whilst being your own.” Individuality is a blessing not a curse and can be promoted in many ways such as freedom of dress so encourage and don’t discriminate. Everyone should be treated with respect and if you feel like you aren’t then speaking up and talking about it will help wonders.– the freedom to act how we like. If you or anyone you know has or is experienceing any form of harrassment, SUBU Advice are there to help along with several other organisations: Victim Support, Support Line.

My Housing Disaster Renting accommodation shouldn’t be difficult, but at university it can be very stressful. Going from living in halls to sourcing your own accommodation and sorting out finances can be a shock to the system for many students. This is what I had to experience. In the beginning our estate agent seemed like one of the better ones (I’m sure you’ll hear about who not to go to during your first year), but then came the day that we could move in. When I arrived at my house it wasn’t as I remembered since the viewing eight months prior. My dad dropped me off with all my life packed in the back of a small Toyota Corolla and went around with me while I went through the inventory with my estate agent.
The property had not been cleaned since the last tenants had moved out, as it said it would in the contract we signed. The extractor fan was hanging off the wall and could fall on anyone if they went to use it, creating a danger hazard. The mattresses were even questionable if you would be able to sleep on them. Then I noticed the fire extinguisher was five years out of date, at this point I knew that this house was not actually safe to live in.
I wanted to just run out the house and go straight home with my parents and all those home comforts I already missed. Since then the problems have been rectified after I contacted the council and they advised me on what to do and inspected the property. They were extremely helpful and got involved straight away and wrote to the estate agent about the house. I would definitely advise contacting them if you ever come across problems with renting. SUBU advice worker, Neill Gallvin has said that if you feel like the landlord is not being accommodating, there are other options to take the case higher. “You can contact the property redress scheme/property ombudsman scheme. But to get to this stage it is vital you write a formal complaint as soon as possible. If you have an issue with damp you can contact Bournemouth’s Environmental Help, they will then arrange a home visit to check whether or not you do have damp.”
Neill also said that students should not be afraid to reach out at university for help when it comes to accommodation –
“SUBU is also there to help as well, whether you’re with BU lettings or not. We’ll even help AUB students if they need it... And if there are any complaints or issues we will be there to help every step of the way.” If you are looking for accomodation for next year and are needing advice SUBU can help: Bournemouth House office: 01202 967369 E-mail: subuadvice@bournemouth.ac.uk Twitter: @SUBUAdvice Facebook: SUBUAdvice Bournemouth

The Iskra Lawrence Impact
COMMENTS Some of you would have seen her on Instagram dancing and showing off her curves, but do you really know the girl behind the pictures?
British model Iskra Lawrence was selected as the lingerie brand ambassador for Aerie in February, and has been breaking the internet ever since.
Aerie hires women with natural looking figures and refuses to Photoshop their photos. It is a brand of lingerie from the retailer American Eagle, and since Iskra’s arrival the campaign’s sales growth is outpacing that of Victoria’s Secret. In a video for the brand, the model gets emotional saying she is so happy that an agency has told her she is beautiful just the way she is. Iskra has famously posed in the past without any altering to make a statement.
The model regularly posts pictures on Instagram showing her cellulite and stretch marks... explaining that she shouldn’t feel insecure for any perceived imperfections. Iskra was initially signed by Elle when she was 13 after being entered into a competition by her mother, but at 16 she was dropped by her agency after being told she was ‘too curvy’. In a recent interview Iskra explained the struggle of trying to fit into the modelling world - “my hips would keep getting measured and I realised that I wasn’t fitting into the sample size clothes.” At such a young age the rejection led to her unhappiness - “I thought that I had to change my body to achieve my dream of being a model.” Lawrence later discovered the plus size modelling world and went to an agency in London but was turned away because she was too small. This meant that she was deemed too big for straight modelling and too small for plus size. Following this, she attempted extreme diets in a desperate attempt to fit into one category. At that point she was a UK size 10-12 and realised that there is a whole group of women that were
not being represented in the modelling industry.
The National UK average for women is a size 14...
leaving a grey area for those who do not match the criteria to be either a ‘plus’ size or a ‘straight’ size model. In an interview with Aerie, Iskra said: “The advice I would give my younger self would be that life is about confidence, life is about believing in yourself and I would stop listening to all the people that said I didn’t fit into the industry.” Lawrence caught the world’s attention when she hit back at an anonymous online body shamer. The cyberbully said that the model was a “fat cow” that ate too many crisps; Iskra retaliated by posting a picture of herself laying on top of crisp packets in her underwear. She wrote a caption addressing the anonymous troll saying “This is for anyone who has ever been called FAT.” The model illustrated just how easy it is to fake photographs by saying, “No thigh gap or thigh gap who cares. We all think we want different things and we should because we are all different, there’s no wrong way just be the healthiest and happiest for you.”
She has been smashing through beauty ‘standards’ all over the modelling industry and continues to go viral. Iskra has plans for the future - “to get compulsory self-care classes into schools, body image and mental health. So if they see a picture of a model or celebrity, instead of it making them feel lesser of themselves or worse, we educate them to realise that it doesn’t matter and that they are perfectly imperfect the way they are.” In a society where a person’s value is based on their follower count and images presented online, she says the most difficult challenge is to stop people obsessing over their own body image and to focus on the inside. Ultimately, her aim is to empower women and to leave a lasting impression and a legacy.

CATFISHING
COMMENTS
The growing popularity with online dating has drastically changed the way people meet. ‘Catfishing’ refers to a fictional character with the sole purpose of luring another person into a fraudulent romantic relationship. Deception online is more common than ever and the idea of actually meeting someone face to face can be intimidating in the current age.
catfish [kat-fish] verb To pretend to be someone you’re not by posting false information
The term Catfish originated by Nev Schulman on a documentary he made whilst experiencing a personal misleading relationship himself. Towards the end of the documentary, the catfishes husband (a fisherman) described the altercation similarly to a catfish. “They used to tank cod from Alaska all the way to China. They’d keep them in vats in the ship. By the time the codfish reached China, the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with the idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them and the catfish will keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in life. They keep you guessing, they keep you thinking, they keep you fresh.” I spoke to an anonymous source that admitted to using Facebook to ‘catfish’ other people. They thought of the idea as a bit of fun at the beginning, emphasising on the idea that “I could be someone else other than me.” This new found freedom outweighed any thought process about how it could actually have a severe impact on other people’s lives.
“One person wanted to meet me but I got too scared and always put it off, saying I was busy or on holiday.” At this point they realised that things were being taken too far and what they had thought was a harmless hobby was having some secondary consequences on an innocent person.
Unfortunately, some people don’t stop here and lure another to meet the hoaxed person, at some points causing mentally and financially damages. 63% of Facebook profiles are automatically set ‘visible to the public’, meaning anyone can access all information the user chooses to put up. There are still not many measures put in place to prevent catfishing, yet if someone suspects a profile to be fake they can report it and it can be taken down, depending on whether Facebook agrees it is breaking their community standards.
Whether it’s out of curiosity, loneliness, revenge or boredom... an emerging class of internet predators cite dozens of reasons for scamming their way into romantic relationships with unsuspecting victims seeking love online. It is easy to be blinded by feelings of affection, especially when someone is giving you more positive attention than you have ever gotten from anyone else before. Just remember to stop and think about the possibility that someone might be taking advantage of you and proceed with the utmost caution. Grin and bear it Written by: Chloe Desave // Designed by: Rebecca Miller // Image source: The Guardian via Google
Some of the UK population who voted remain in the EU referendum have accepted the fact that we will no longer be part of the bloc and have started to plan their brexit future. However, on the 3rd November a high court ruling involving brexit challengers and the government took place. The high court ruled that parliament must have a say on triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which has left the government unable to begin the exit negotiations with the EU on their own. Gina Miller is the lead claimant in the high court ruling and challenges the details of brexit. The investment manager made it clear however that the court case was not an attempt to overturn the referendum decision but instead to scrutinise the details of how we leave and how we are going to negotiate. Since the decision for the government to get parliament’s approval of the exit of the EU, Gina Miller has been experiencing a social media hatestorm even though the brexit challengers were supposedly representing the popular vote. I think it was because the population believed that this ruling would mean that all the campaigning and backstabbing running up to the EU referendum, would have been for nothing and that we would stay in the EU if the parliament agreed to.
In simple terms, the government cannot trigger Article 50 without holding a parliament vote first.
NM // 48
I think the first thought on people’s minds was if brexit was going to happen or not and will the parliament vote to remain. Since the majority of the population did vote leave, I doubt we will do a U turn and turn our backs on democracy.
However, parliament could decide not to give the go-ahead on the EU exit, which could cause uproar among the public. The 48.1% who voted remain would be overjoyed by the fact that parliament could change the outcome of the vote, but what about the 51.9% who voted leave and are expecting to actually leave the union. Democracy has existed since 508 BC in Ancient Athens, so why would we go back on democracy and the popular brexit vote. I say we should grin and bear the result of brexit, which happened on the 23rd June and hope that the country will not fall apart due to the new high court ruling. The government has appealed the court’s decision and our prime minister Theresa May says she is “confident” that the government will be successful. I do not understand why it is such a big problem if the parliament are involved in the process since the high court did reiterate that parliament is sovereign as they can make laws or take them away. Maybe the government should not be the one’s fully in control of our futures since when we finally do leave the EU and trigger Article 50, it will be a monumental event for our country.

2016 SPORT AWARDS
SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR: ANDY MURRAY
COACH OF THE YEAR: EDDIE JONES
Topping 2015 must have looked like a tough ask for Andy Murray when he fell on to the clay in Ghent, having just secured the Davis Cup for Great Britain. Yet, with eight ATP titles – including Wimbledon - already in his tennis bag, an Olympic gold around his neck and the possibility of spending Christmas as the number one tennis player in the world, 2016 might just be his best year yet.
Think back to the end of 2015 and, specifically, think about the state of English rugby. You may remember an organisation that had been humiliated at a home World Cup and a team that looked bereft of ideas. Yet now, at the end of 2016, England sit at second in the rugby world rankings and enter the upcoming Autumn Internationals as favourites against all but New Zealand. For that, English rugby have Eddie Jones to thank. The man who had guided Japan to that victory over South Africa stepped in to the breach at the head of English rugby in November 2015 and hasn’t looked back since. Jones’ impact has gone past just results, however. England now have an ‘identity’, and look much more like a unit than at any time since the World Cup winning side in 2003. They play without fear, knowing that Jones will back them if they give maximum effort.
Murray’s list of achievements this year is as long as it is impressive. In 2016, Murray became the first tennis player to successfully defend an Olympic gold medal; he won Wimbledon for the second time; he reached the final of three of the four Grand Slam tournaments; and, to top it all off, he became tennis’ world number one for the first time – the end result of a lifetime’s work.
TEAM OF THE YEAR: TEAM GB HOCKEY TEAM Many would have been expecting to be captivated by a penalty shoot-out in the summer of 2016, yet few would have expected it to involve Great Britain’s women’s hockey team. Of all the successes at Rio 2016, none grabbed the attention of the nation more so than Great Britain’s victory over the Netherlands in the hockey final. In fact, the match was so gripping that it even delayed the BBC’s Ten O’Clock News. Great Britain started the match as underdogs and trailed for most of it. However they kept coming back and when the match finished at 3-3, penalties beckoned. Step forward, Maddie Hinch. Great Britain’s goalkeeper had already been the game’s best player in normal time, yet surpassed herself in the shoot-out, saving all four of the Netherlands penalties. Hockey is usually a fringe sport at best, but through the efforts of the Great British Olympic team, it entered the mainstream, if only for one night. For that, they deserve to be team of the year.
SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR: DAME SARAH STOREY
Deciding on a winner for the women’s category was a harder decision than that of the men’s. The award could have gone to so many – Johanna Konta, Charlotte Dujardin, Maddie Hinch and Laura Trott to name just a few. However, in the year that she became Great Britain’s most successful female Paralympian, it seems fitting that Dame Sarah Storey should be our Sportswoman of the Year. Over a 20 year career, the 38-year-old has competed in both disabled and ablebodied competitions, during which she has won an amazing haul of 13 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medals, placing her among the world’s top athletes. Storey’s gold in the C5 3000m event at Rio 2016 moved her ahead of Baroness Tanni-Grey Thompson in the medal list for female Paralympic athletes and cemented her status as one of our great Olympians.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CONTENDERS
Aside from the 3-3 stutter at Celtic Park, Manchester City were ill-fated to be beaten by such a heavy deficit at the Camp Nou in October, and they proved why in the reverse fixture at the Etihad.
City were fast, dynamic, and looked like they had finally found a great balance. But more importantly, they took their chances, something so vital when coming up against opposition such as

They were relentless, they could and should have scored more, and they are now in control of their own qualifying campaign.
They are contenders and I say that not just because of how dangerous they are on the counter attack; let’s not forget City dismantled Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 in week one, a team known to sit – who adopt a ‘come and break us down’ approach. Manchester City
Writing as we exit week four of the Champion’s League group stages, Michael Cox has a look at two teams that have impressed so far, whilst taking a guess as to who will lift the trophy at the end of the season.
Atletico Madrid are not the same team that lost to local rivals Real Madrid in the European final last year. They are
Upon strengthening, they focused on forward players, and upgrading the offense, but their defensive steel has been absent.
There is an astounding fluidity; Atleti have scored four or more goals in four separate fixtures so far this term, including a 7-1 battering of Granada at the Vincente Calderon back in midOctober. The forwards are sharp, the full backs are tireless.
La Liga is the best league in the world, and Atleti are as much a contender as any, if not, the favourite this year. When a team is at a high standard but wishes to improve further, they run the risk of losing a part of the qualities that made the unit so fearful in the first place. This is what has happened to Leicester (minus their sensational European run). Atletico did not; writing this (November 4), Diego Simeone’s side have conceded seven goals in 14 combined domestic and European fixtures this season, the fewest of any team across Europe’s top five leagues, shipping just one in the Champions League.
The one-nil kings ran out Premier League champions last season, a team that was so tough to break down throughout the campaign.
But this is not the Atletico of old, one that would win 70% of their games by a one goal margin.
Simeone is finding the perfect balance between defense and attack, and it could be their title to lose.
Kevin Gameiro, Saul Niguez, Koke, Fernando Torres and Yannick Carassco have taken turns to get amongst the goals, not to mention Antoine Greizmann who loves a big occasion, something found in all top teams.

SPORT
FormulaOne:SeasonReview Writing with two races left in the Formula One season, Michael Cox analyses some key talking points of the year.
One of the closest driver’s championship battles this sport has seen for years pegs Mercedes team-mates/bitter rivals Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg head to head for the title, and with two races remaining, it’s anyone’s trophy. Although Rosberg sits 19 points ahead of Lewis and is clear favourite for his first career driver’s championship victory, the German is due an engine failure during the last race and there is a spanner in the works for his long awaited title to elude him still. The best of the rest are the Red Bulls; Max Verstappen has had some eye catching performances, whilst being called out on a number of occasions from separate drivers for dangerous driving. This has led to stricter rules on moving under breaking, something that the field has struggled to get used to.
It’s been another year of up’s and down’s for McClaren-Honda, and particularly down’s in recent weeks. Fernando Alonso, hailed by many as one of the best drivers to grace Formula One, has grappled with his car throughout the season, but has failed to put together momentum in gaining points. That said, he sits in 10th position, 31 and 50 points ahead of teammates Jensen Button and Stoffel Vandoorne respectively, and despite the clear disadvantage of McClaren’s technical difficulties, he remains one of the best drivers in world racing.
Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikonnen will be disappointed with their efforts this season, both driving in the much anticipated Ferrari car but never really troubling the Mercedes boys. It will be interesting to see Ferrari’s approach next year; Vettel and Raikonnen are two of the best drivers the sport has seen, there is no excuse for the capitulation and overall technical inadequacies on show from Mattia Binotto’s team this year.
The new Azerbaijan track was a clear highlight of the 2016 season, with a pit stop that spans almost 2,000 metres; Rosberg qualified first and came out on top overall much to the despise of Lewis who was nowhere to be seen throughout the race. Alonso took second place.
We shall see…
Once again it is Lewis chasing the title like we have seen so often in recent years but can Rosberg do it? He’s left it late.

TYRONE MINGS - My ACL Injury -
NM // 56
12 months recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury can be a long time side-lined for a player; Michael Cox caught up with AFC Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings to find out just exactly what it is like dealing with such a serious injury in professional football.
MC - Nice to see you Tyrone, MC - 9-12 months recovery how are you feeling towards period for an ACL injury is the new season? a long time, how did you “Very optimistic, obviously for missing cope mentally knowing the majority of last season I am now in a much better place physically and mentally that you were not going to to cope with the demands of the Premier play football for such a long League. I am training every day and feel fitter and stronger than I was this time period? last year, so I am very excited for the new season.”
MC - What were your first thoughts when you suffered the injury on pitch, how serious did you think it would be? “My knee felt like it was on fire, it felt red hot so the physiotherapist came on and tested it out. Shock set in and I felt like I could carry on, I felt like I could stand up and try and give it another go. The physiotherapist told me that this wasn’t wise, and made the decision that I should come off. At the time I knew it could be fairly serious, but how serious it was in reality I definitely did not expect.”
“I didn’t at the start, I must admit it took its toll on me. I had to be admitted back into hospital in November and I had to have a knee manipulation procedure as there was too much scar tissue building up in my knee. They put me to sleep, and basically bent my knee apart multiple times whilst I was under to try and set it into a mould where it could heal properly. So that set me back. Everything went okay after that, I was working with the club physiotherapist and in working in the gym as much as I could to try and speed up my recovery. But then in March, when I tried to start running outside, the pins in my ligament were rubbing against each other, which caused inflammation inside the knee cap. I was rushed back to hospital to undergo another operation, and the pins were then removed, setting me back a little further once more. In total, I was out for 12 months. Mentally it was tough, very tough.”
MC - How important were your friends/family and the club in supporting you on the road to recovery? “Family always gave me the best advice, they were always my number one source for support, and obviously the club as well, the sports psychologists who work with the club are very good.”
MC - How much focus was there in terms of one-to-one support, were you at all left to your own devices? “I worked one-to-one with one of the sports psychologists here for about 10 months, we would get together a lot to speak about how I was feeling. I would call him a lot especially when I was feeling down, there were many frustrating times throughout the rehab process. It can be a very lonely place, so speaking to as many people as you can is really the best way to try and feel like the rehabilitation is important. People want to see you back fit and that is always one of the most encouraging things.”
NM // 57
SPORT MC - Was it hard knowing MC - How did the coaches MC - What are your personal that you may never play the manage your inclusion back goals for this season? same way again? into training? “Maybe once or twice I had those thoughts. Definitely after my first operation. When I woke up, I had about 30 staples keeping the skin on my knee together, two new ligaments had been created inside and there was a big strip of my tendon that had been removed from the front of my knee cap. My knee felt like it had been sawed in half and sellotaped back together, it felt that loose. So then, naturally, one of my first thoughts was, there is no way I am going to come back from this. But gradually, one, two, three weeks later, the rehab progresses and each week you feel more comfortable extending it and working with the physiotherapists. But in the long run, I never set that limitation on myself, would I ever be the same? I am glad I didn’t because I am stronger, faster and quicker than I was in the tests from last year’s pre-season so hopefully I am doing something right.”
NM // 58
“It was a mixture really, there are some tests that the physiotherapists can do to test the stage of recovery in your knee. Strength tests, power tests and jump tests can be carried out to assess whether you can cope with the physical loads of Premier League training. We did a lot of straight line running to start with, after that I started twisting and turning, then change of direction, and then a lot of reactive work, gradually making me think about using my knee without always being in a controlled environment. Sometimes I would join in training and it would just be a passing drill, then it would be a match but the others couldn’t tackle me, so just stuff to get me thinking about playing again but not always throwing me in the deep end. It was good because when the day finally came for me to join back into training fully, it had been such a gradual process that I thought I could have probably joined in three weeks prior, but it was a case of easing me in slowly.”
“At the moment it is just to train every day, and try and prove to the manager that I am better than the other defenders that are playing week in week out. I am knocking on the manager’s door asking how I can improve and what I need to do, to be at the level he expects. My personal goal is to get back into the team and hopefully my performances from there will make everything else take care of itself.”
MC - Thanks Tyrone, and all the best for the season ahead! Written by: Michael Cox Designed by: Joshua Browne Image Sources: AFC Bournemouth

ENGLAND IN BANGLADESH in review
The drawn series has posed more questions than it has given answers to England’s Test problems In days gone by, a Test series drawn against Bangladesh would have been a calamity for English cricket. Not so now. Bangladesh are a team in the ascendency and, at least on home soil, are a tough test for any side. As Alistair Cook said after England’s collapse in the Second Test: “defeat by Bangladesh is not the toughest I’ve had to bear”. With England, the problem lies not in the result but in the manner in which they lost. Nobody said that playing cricket in the sub-continent would be easy. However, the manner in which England batted against Mehedi Hasan and the other Bangladeshi spinners should be ringing alarm bells amongst the England coaches with a Test series against India just around the corner. The first issue on England’s agenda should be to decide on their best XI and stick with it, thus allowing each member of the team to relax and play their natural game. A case in point is Zafar Ansari, the newest recruit to the England team. Ansari’s brand of left-arm spin is naturally attacking, its main aim to take wickets.
NM // 60
However, against Bangladesh Ansari was used to tie up one end and prevent any runs being scored, forcing him to move away from his natural game – the same game style that got him in to the England team in the first place.
Aside from deciding on their best XI, England’s next priority should be their fielding. The old adage that ‘catches win matches’ still rings true. It’s no secret that when Trevor Bayliss first took over the England side he extolled the virtues of catching and sent the England team on a training camp in Spain purely to work on the skill. It may be time for another trip.
“Defeat by Bangladesh is not the toughest I’ve had to bear” There were positive elements to emerge from the two Test series, however. Ben Stokes continues to go from strength to strength as an all-rounder and showed that he can play the match situation when needed with his three-hour 85 in Chittagong. Ben Duckett, another new addition to the Test fold, also gave a good account of himself and looks like he may be the opening partner Alistair Cook has been searching for.
Bangladesh provided a stern test and England struggled. Let’s hope they sort out their problems before they face India – an even tougher examination.

PREMIER LEAGUE FOCUS: the importance of ozil Written by: Josh Keen // Designed by: Joshua Browne // Image source: Pinterest via Google
Arsenal playmaker and German international Mesut Özil is playing at the top of his game for club and country as the first phase of the 2016/17 season comes to a close. The midfielder has always had an outstanding reputation throughout his career from early club days with Schalke 04 and Real Madrid. With the recent Ballon D’or shortlist being announced, it seems strange that the Arsenal star has been excluded as a result of his recent form this year. Özil has been involved in seven goals in his last four games for his club, whilst securing his first ever career hat-trick in a 6-0 win against Ludogorets in the Champions League. Özil’s superb form has not gone completely unnoticed however, as he and fellow teammate, Alexis Sanchez, have both been included in the FIFA’s 23 man shortlist for ‘Player of the Year’ – a separate ‘Best Player’ shortlist to the Ballon d’Or following the collaborative split of France Football and FIFA.
The midfield maestro was awarded Arsenal’s player-of-the-month in October, as well as goal-of-the-month for his flawless volley against Swansea City in a 3-2 home win. Fellow countryman and Arsenal teammate Shkodran Mustafi said in November that Özil is a “Special player.” Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal striker, Charlie Nicholas, was full of praise for the German after the consistent high standard of performances: “Ozil is from another planet.”
Wenger’s main man will be pivotal to the success of the North London club as not only is he assisting his teammates – he is now taking the responsibility on himself to get on the scoresheet. If he continues to play with full confidence, it will be a struggle for the fans favourite to not attract attention of world’s most elite clubs.
It may have taken him a couple of seasons to get into full swing in London, but there is no denying Özil’s ability as a creative midfielder. If Arsenal are going to achieve success this season, they will need their record signing to keep playing to the standard he currently is.
