Treat Yo' Self! Pullandbear.com
A
s everyone else around the world cozies up in front of a fire, enjoys chocolate fondue, or is whisked away on an impressive date, you sit at home contemplating whether you can hack another episode on Netflix. Valentine’s Day is all about treating the ones you love and here at Nerve Magazine we are all about promoting self-love, therefore this only means one thing. From the wise words of Parks and Recreation: Treat Yo’ Self! Here are five trends every fashion blogger and their neighbour will be sporting this spring and you should too! Update your wardrobe and Treat Yo’ Self!
1. DIVERSE DENIM. Last year many people experimented with denim: more rips, embroidery and patches. Whether this means branching out of your committed relationship with skinny jeans, adding a pin to your denim jacket or fraying the end of your jeans, you should totally jump onto this experimental denim bandwagon. 2. FLORAL, FLIRTY, FRILLS. You may think wow floral for spring, what a shock. But this year, spring dresses are getting frillier, daintier and even more feminine. If this is not your style, throw on a leather jacket and pair it with ankle boots to dress it down and add a little edge. 3. SASSY STRIPES. The striped button-down is an absolute classic and screams sophistication. But mix it up this season by sticking with the corporate stripes but trying out these twists on a classic. 4. CLOTHES BRIGHTER THAN YOUR FUTURE. Last year, due to the “Yeezy Effect” everyone was sporting neutrals and earth tones like khaki and beige. But this year is going to be much brighter, particularly in street wear, as people will be incorporating more colour into their wardrobe.

5. THINK PINK. The reoccurring theme in many spring 2017 shows, such as Valentino and Celine, was the colour pink. Whether it is blush, bubblegum or fuchsia, all shades are in!

There are many ways to stay healthy and have fun at the same time. Going to the gym and running on the treadmill for hours is not a thing anymore. It is not about sizes anymore, it is about wellbeing.

1. Classes That Combine Workout Styles
Now there are many classes like dance and strength training or combining pilates and yoga. Physique 57 is one of these classes. It is a barre-based workout blended with intervals of cardio, strength-training, stretching, and recovery. Cardio, strength training, and stretching combined with the formula of interval overload create long, lean supply muscles in the shortest period of time.
2. Bodyweight Training
This type of workout is perfect for the people who do not have enough time to go to the gym or simply do not like to do it. Bodyweight training is easy, no equipment needed, they can be modified to suit any ability level, and they can be done just about anywhere. Moreover, it gives you the chance to get fit for free!
3. Virtual Reality Workouts
Considering all the VR technology that is out there for entertainment purposes already, now there is a very high chance you can look for in-home workouts that incorporate this tech in 2017. There are fitness companies that already offer this kind of training sessions. Now instead of staying in the gym and trying not to get bored, you are able to put on a headset, sit on a station ary bike and literally feel like you are riding through a virtual environment.
4. Yoga & Meditation
Many yoga studios are now offering mediation classes which are suitable for any ability level; they help with relieving stress, improve creativity, and boost energy levels. It is perfect after a hard day at work and the benefits are not only physical but mental and emotional as well.
5. High-Intensity Workouts
HIIT’s result in good muscle density, which helps you burn calories fast by alternating quick bursts of high-intensity exercise with short rest periods. There is growing recognition of the benefits of strength and interval training and it can be found in all types of workouts, from Pilates to CrossFit and boot camp classes
6. Online Workout Training
More and more websites now offer web personal training. The biggest advantages are that the training sessions are not only affordable but you can train whenever you want wherever you want. There are many options, for example, doing YouTube workouts, weight loss competitions or fitness challenges. More and more people are choosing online workout training because of their hectic lifestyle.
7. Active Recovering & Stretching
According to the the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), 2017 will see these fitness trends continue to flourish but also with a bigger focus on recovery to balance out these intense workouts. Those kinds of exercises are often recommended but also often forgotten as part of an effective workout regime. They are designed to encourage a slower approach to recovery, make more time to stretch and foam roll to heal muscles, relieve muscle tightness and spasms, improve circulation, and recover in order to optimize each workout. 3 EASY STEPS FOR HEALTHY NAILS
Unfortunately, getting Instagram worthy Gel and Acrylic manicures can leave the natural nail damaged, impossible to sustain fake tips for future manicures. Therefore, it is important to give them time to heal to become polished and strong again. To help your nails back to their natural beauty follow these 3 easy steps to help.
2. Say Goodbye to Your Claws Sadly, once the gel tips are gone the nail that grew underneath is too thin and brittle and will tear shortly after being exposed. To help the natural nail grow stronger right from the beginning and not have to deal with tears you have to file down, not cut, the nail to 1-2mm length. Using a glass file, filing in one direction only, and going from the corners inward is the best way to prevent future cracks.
NM // 9
1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize The most important thing to do for your nails is to bring moisture back to the nail bed, cuticles, and surrounding area. To do so, you should invest in an intense hand cream or mask with Vitamin E to help nail growth. A specific oil and cream for your cuticle area is recommended as these absorb faster into the skin.
3. Get Strong Again Apply nail hardener thinly every week until any visible damaged has grown out. This will help to feed minerals to the newly growing nail and thickening the layers.
Do not be impatient with this healing process, all the damage done from the electric files needs to grow out. This can take up to 6 weeks and is a frustrating time for nail polish lovers. But as long as you follow the steps above, your nails should grow stronger and more beautiful than before, allowing you to wear them natural again if you please so. LAZY AND FABULOUS 101
Lately, fashion magazines such as Marie-Claire, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and also brands like H&M, NYX, Mac, are trying to switch the focus from a “traditional way of wearing make-up to a more original, outside the box one. Instead of staying in the comfort zone wearing red lipstick, black eyeliner and smoky eye for a night out, articles from magazines or from social media sites (especially Snapchat), try to educate individuals on how to combine colours in a fashionable way, without having a heavy look. However, there are some products that can be used solely on a daily basis, easy to put on, and also, affordable.
NM // 11
NYX Vivid Brights NYX launched a range of 8 eyeliners that come in extremely bright colors (hence the name). When purchased, the eyeliners have the same colour on skin as they show on the box, they are really pigmented (only one application is enough), and they cost no more than £5.50 from any Boots store. They can be used alone or in combination with other eyeliners or eye shadow. However, considering their rich pigmentation, it is recommended to be used alone. Complete it with a nude, peachy, or brown lipstick, and a popping highlighter, focusing on the high points of your cheeks so you can make those eyes stand out.
Highlighter Used for strobing, after Kim Kardashian made the concept popular, make-up artists such as Jeffrey Star and brands like Make-Up Revolution created their own unique highlighters. Jeffrey Star’s Skin Frost collection is a bit more expensive, being £25.50; it comes in black, pink, blue, grey, gold, and purple shades and it is absolutely amazing and pigmented. A black highlighter during the day is too much, but for a night out it is perfect, especially if you want to stand out from the crowd. I Heart Makeup Unicorn sold by TAM Beauty is only £5 and offers a range of five different highlighting colors and its texture creates a perfect glow on the face: not too much, not too little (also, you can also add more if you feel like it). Complete it with a subtle contour, as the highlighter is already dramatic, and a shade of lipstick that contrasts the shade of highlighter; for example, if wearing gold, peach, light green, go for dark lipstick, and if you are wearing black, grey, purple, go for peachy and nude lips, as there always needs to be a balance on the face.
Gold Eyeliner Everyone has got to love a little bit of gold in their life. When you just want to make a statement without putting too much effort, then go for a gold eyeliner. Being the peak of this season, there are a range of brands to choose from. Lush is selling gold eyeliners (on top of emerald green, sparkly pink and intense blue) for £14.50; NYX offers both liquid eyeliners and pencils, which adjust to every customer’s way of doing make-up; or Urban Decay Razor Sharp liquid liner for £16. Pay attention to the Lush one as its pigmentation will make your eyes look a bit too much if used alone. Therefore, feel free to try different looks (even though they might seem odd when you picture them) by having a thick line of black eyeliner and a thin gold one on top, or a bit of gold in the corner of the eye, or half gold, half another color, etc. Complete it with a matte complexion with a deep contour, and a purple/dark red/ black/grey lipstick. Try to avoid highlighter and any other glitter as you do not want to look too sparkly. Written by: Raluca Rusoiu Designed by: Olivia Pooley

GYM KITS It is that time of the year where the gyms are full of people trying their best to start and stick to their New Year’s Resolutions of staying healthy and getting fitter. But let’s be honest, how many of us actually stick to it and still feel motivated to get our gym gear on and work out? Especially when it is freezing cold outside, the exam revision and assignments are piling up, and all you want to do is lay in bed all day, binge watching Netflix. Finding the motivation is hard but a great way to get yourself started is to invest in some new gym gear; we all love getting new clothes and there is nothing that says motivation like a retail haul. irst up has to be a good pair of gym leggingsThe gym can be an intimidating place sometimes and there is nothing more embarrassing than see through leggings. It is important to feel confident and comfortable when working out. Do not be fooled by the brands and price; even the best of brands can still catch you out. If you are looking for a lower budget pair, Puma have some great ones. Adidas and Gymshark have also proven to be non-see through and come in a range of different prices and designs, and they are also really durable and last. But if you are a keen gym goer and willing to spend a bit more, it is worth investing in a pair of LuLulemon leggings. They are quite pricey at £88 but are amazing quality and the designs are so flattering and an instant confidence boost; some of them come with a side pocket to hold your phone which is a really handy feature to have. Next on the list has to be a decent sports bra. Again, feeling comfortable in the gym is key, and a sports bra with no support which does not fit right is not just uncomfortable, but can also cause damage in the long run. It is best to go into shops and try out a variety of different supports that they are offering. They come in such a range of different styles, colours and prices. H&M and Forever 21 have some really nice designs that are comfortable, affordable and long lasting. Nike and Adidas are a little pricier
but are super comfortable and have a bigger range of designs; and you can use Uniday’s student discount on the Adidas website. If you are looking to spend a little more money, then check out Victoria’s Secret and Sweaty Betty. Sweaty Betty’s site has a helpful online size guide that contains two steps to finding the perfect bra. And finally, accessories. There is nothing worse than working out to no music and with your hair falling all over your face. Headphones, hair bands, and a resistance band are key accessories to have in your gym bag. Wireless headphones are a great investment; they are a lot more practical, comfortable, and easier to wear. They do not have to be expensive or bulky either. Check out Amazon for a great range of different styles, colours and prices. A resistance band is also a great little added essential as it means you can work out wherever and mix up your work out’s to keep it interesting and to keep yourself motivated. They are super easy to get hold of and most importantly, they are low cost. Take a look on Ebay, Amazon and Sports Direct, or on many online and in store shops which sell them.

The Dark Side of Social Media Social media is great. You can chat to friends, watch endless videos of cute puppies, follow your favourite celebrities and even stalk that fit girl or boy you pulled in Cameo last night‌ the possibilities are endless! But what if social media is not as amazing as we all first thought? Think about it, if you take away all of the positive attributes these sites possess, could social media actually be making us sad? Written by: Megan Horton // Designed by: Rebecca Miller Illustration by: Ellie Buchanan
NM // 17
In 2015 researchers at the University of Pittsburgh discovered a direct correlation between social media usage and depressive states of mind. For most, social media has now become a part of the daily routine, you wake up check your phone and then get ready, and a similar event happens at night. So considering how much time most individuals spend endlessly scrolling through these sites, is this any surprise?
From smoothing over wrinkles to Photoshopping their bodies, it is hard to go a day without seeing at least one edited image on Instagram. Just take a look at Kris Jenner’s photo with Gordon Ramsey or Mariah Carey’s attempts at Photoshopping if you want a laugh. No matter how perfect you may think someone is, they all have their insecurities.
Fear of missing out or FOMO, can often leave one feeling isolated and lonely, and social media just adds fuel to the fire, with Snapchat being one of the biggest culprits of this. You know that feeling, either all your friends are at a party you were not invited to or you have had to stay at home in preparation for the massive presentation you have in the morning, so what do you do? You take a quick look at your friend’s Snapchat stories who are all having ‘the best time ever.’ But then you are stuck, whether you like it or not, your whole night will now consist of endlessly checking their stories to see what is going on, wasting so much time that it probably would have been more productive to just go to the party. But let’s be honest, if the night was that great surely they would be spending less time online and more time actually having fun.
It is time to look at the bigger picture, just because you think someone has the perfect life, body, relationship and career. They probably do not, and it is more likely they are just posting what they want you to see, because remember no one is perfect. So relax, who cares what everyone else is doing, it is time to focus on you. And in light of all this, is it time we all take a step back and have a break from social media? As terrifying as that sounds, maybe it is what we all need.
Self-comparison is another factor social media heightens. Social media means people can now share their lives with anyone, because of this many find themselves posting photos of themselves on holidays, or tweeting about their amazing new job offer. With everyone choosing to post the ‘best’ bits of their lives online, this can often leave some comparing their lives to others, feeling resentful and jealous towards them. However in some cases this can lead to bigger issues. Lisa, whose name has been changed for the purpose of this interview, explained her experience with this; ‘I have always suffered with body issues and I’ve never been happy with the way I look, but over the last couple years it just got worse. And when speaking to the counsellor I found that a lot of this came from me comparing myself to people I follow online.’ Realistically most of what we now see online is just a false representation of reality, even most selfies are now distorted by numerous filters before being posted. But most of us are culprits; even the ‘perfect’ celebrities you know and love do it.

T
here is a growing sense that people all over the world are becoming desensitized to graphic content. Pornography is more available than ever, celebrities now walk around half-clothed, and videos of terrorist attacks, beheadings and torture are all common occurrences online. It is not surprising then, that the BBC, a typically PC and family friendly entertainment station, has recognized the need to become more aggressive with who they offend to keep up with modern audiences – firing Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear for his archaic views only pushed the show and subsequently its huge audience, into the hands of Amazon who clearly felt no remorse for the ordeal that had gone on. Whether we like it or not, these brands are business orientated, and they sink or swim when an industry becomes untenable. With new shows like Revolting, which critics blasted for being insensitive for their Housewives of ISIS sketch, it is apparent that there is a niche for this type of television, those that are tired of the rhetoric that stops them from expressing their thoughts. The rise of patriotism and populism in Britain with Brexit suggests that there should be a platform in our democracy for these types of people. To quote a viewer, Timmy Poncho, “This is fantastic...people bang on about politically incorrect humour...this is brave and funny and about time we poked fun at these morons!” Moving away from politics it is questionable, whether our moral code is met with this craving for colourful content that ventures into the dark abyss, one that we would not want to associate ourselves with in any circumstance. Another new BBC instalment is Tom Hardy’s Taboo series, taking the prime time Saturday spot on BBC1.
NM // 19
With graphic images of crabs feasting on the remains of a heart-less body and incestuous secrets it fills the gap for TV that you cannot turn away from. Hardy’s acting is wickedly candid, which aims to shock and provoke viewers, testing the boundaries for what is and what is not acceptable. The show is partly saved by the era in which it is set, 19th century London, and presents a London completely different to our own, one where viewers can lose themselves in the viciousness of history. However, the fact that these shows are being broadcasted on prime time television leads to conclude that this is where TV is heading. When does it end though? How far can it go before viewers demand a show is too much? It is exciting to say the least. Lets not forget Big Brother, which constantly makes headlines in the newspapers for crude behaviour. All the while the executives watch and laugh at the outrage they have created as pound signs roll back into their eyes as their ratings continue to increase. People like the show because - at its core – it exhibits the raw sexuality that naturally occurs when people are forced to be in the same room as each other for weeks on end. Either way, the people that are put on these shows come out with their reputation tarnished or empowered and this kind of drama is the reason why it will never go away any time soon. With this in mind, the notion of a ‘Battle Royale’ type reality show is not that far away and already there is the development of Russian survival show, Game2, which boasts compliance to broadcast potential rape and murder, even if this is later used as evidence when arresting the individuals involved. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED? This is the thought that crosses the minds of any great athlete, musician or artist. As people get older they tend to romanticize the thought of leaving a legacy, something that people can remember you by when they turn the dusty pages of the history books. Think of all the greats who retired or died after producing their best work or mastering their field. 2016 took some of the greatest talents that our world is yet to see, like Carrie Fisher, David Bowie and Muhammad Ali. Written by: Jacob Donohoe // Designed by: Joshua Browne Image // Source: Pexels
NM // 21
By definition, the word ‘tragedy’ comes from Greek trag idia “a drama about the misfortune of heroes” and in this context represents the eternalized image of remembering someone in the peak of their time. It feels as if they were taken from us, and we lash out at the injustices of the world, which only draws you in closer to your crystallized perception of them, whilst completely ignoring any vital human flaws that would shatter this image forever. The more experience you have with people, the more you understand that these pedestalized figures of our society have just as many imperfections as we do, however well they are hidden by the glitz and glamour of the camera flashes. Instead, when you ask the people closest to them, they will tell you of their character rather than their achievements, which lets people delve into something deeper. As time goes by, it is sad to watch the people you have grown up with become consumed, and this is partly why degenerative disorders like Parkinson’s are so traumatizing, not as much for the person affected, but for the others around them. It has been said that we only remember 3 things about an event; the beginning, the emotional peak and the end. Most people like to think they remember most things, but looking back, the space in-between these 3 things seems to have been washed away overnight. A student (who will remain anonymous) recently lost their grandparent to Alzheimer’s and is quoted as stating: “The worst part about losing someone with a condition is not just the loss itself, it’s the process leading to it, it’s
the knowing that you nor anybody else could do anything to stop their slow descent into the abyss of their mind. My grandfather was my hero and I can only compare it to watching a great historical castle being taken apart very slowly brick by brick.” Many have felt the same shock with the recent losses that have taken place over the last year. However, if you are someone that possesses that everlasting drive to do great things and change people’s lives, it is worth asking yourself this question. “How would you like to be remembered?” When you consider this, you will pay closer attention to the little things in your everyday interactions as well as the big things. Obviously this will be different to each person, but it is something that everyone can practice. Even something as simple as being the brother that your sister knows she can tell anything to. It is the depths of our relationships with others that creates the lasting impression that we leave, all those artists, musicians and athletes already know this and there really is no easy way to do this apart from investing your time in cultivating these. This means putting your phone down at meals, weddings and reunions. Whatever is waiting on that little blue screen is irrelevant, it cannot be more important than what you are portraying to people in that moment. There is no need to fake interest or emotion, because realistically who is better qualified to play you than you, but if you ever find yourself forgetting about this just think about how you would like to remembered if you vanished tomorrow.

New Year, New Me‌ New Diet? Jam jars of bananas and chai seeds on the beach, bowls of leaves and avocados in the sunset, smoothie cups containing anything that will fit in the blender – a typical morning scroll through Instagram. Health crazes have really hit it off and show no sign of stopping in 2017.

Since 2013, research has revealed that adults are either meeting or exceeding their vitamin and mineral recommended amounts, but they are eating far too much saturated fat. So how do you do it? Which diet is the healthy diet? And could we be obsessing over ‘clean eating’ just a little bit too much? First off, we have all seen ‘gluten free’ hitting the headlines with our favourite celebrities. A gluten free diet is the only treatment for those with forms of gluten and wheat allergies, but it has become popular to follow this lifestyle out of choice. Wheat, barley and rye contain gluten, but they also contain fibre, which helps the digestive system run smoothly. Larina Robinson, founder of The Body Dietetic, is both gluten and dairy free, when speaking to her she stated “A healthy diet really comes down to adding as much colour to your plate as you can, based upon your own unique nutrition needs – no fad diet required”. So if you think gluten is not for you then by all means pursue a gluten-free diet but remember to keep that plate colourful with different beans, potatoes and fruit which are all packed full of fibre. Similarly, the veganism community has been growing exponentially. According to the Vegan Society there are three and a half times as many vegans as there were in 2006 – that is over 500,000 in Great Britain alone. When speaking to Beth Yarrow, The President of the Royal Holloway University Vegan and Vegetarian Society, she stated; “Since being vegan I have more energy than I have ever had. I get all the nutrients I need so easily, and my blood test results are better than ever. I genuinely love this lifestyle for not only my physical health, but also my mental health and general wellbeing.” Written by: Anna Redding Designed by: Rebecca Miller
The paleo diet has also been known as the caveman diet and involves going right back to our Neanderthal days, eating only what was available to us then. This means no Pot Noodles, Nutella or Pringles. But it also cuts out pasta, cereals, legumes, dairy products and processed meats. Whilst this might seem like ‘ultimate goals’ on the healthy eating front, has it gone a bit too far? Variety in our diet is important because each food offers a slightly different combination of nutrients. We need a bit of everything, no food group should be coined ‘bad’ – we need carbohydrates and fats. Orthorexia is a condition involving obsessive behaviour about eating healthily. Laura Ford, a nutritionist and dietician from Melbourne, said, “There is growing research that highlights that a fixation on ‘clean eating’ is actually creating an unhealthy obsession with food”. Trying to be happy and healthy is fantastic and is something everyone should pursue, however it is important to remember that healthy is a broad term and doesn’t just involve food. ‘Healthy’ should involve your brain as well as your body. Andy De Santis, a registered dietician from Toronto, concludes “Dietary trends and fads come and go to the point that it is questionable whether to even take notice of them anymore.” He states his number one piece of advice, relevant to almost anyone, is more fruit and vegetables “These are the foods that will never go old and out of style… and are time and time again associated with positive health outcomes”. So as cliché as it sounds; do what makes you happy. Get out and stretch your legs, munch on your over-night oats and see it as a hobby not a chore. If you are going to make any drastic changes to your diet do some research first, and if in doubt talk to an expert.

BEWARE OF THE QUARTER LIFE CRISIS A midlife crisis… really? Do you want to know what a real crisis is? Try being between 21-25 and being ambushed everywhere you turn by society as it tries to shove endless expectation down your throat, until you can do nothing but gag on all the debilitating possibilities. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose your soulmate. Choose your future. Choose the rest of your life - is the constant banshee scream awaiting the ears of young adults across the country as graduation looms. People talk about a midlife crisis, as if it is this big scary thing- but is it? Let’s be honest, all a midlife crisis really amounts to is a shiny new car, some new ‘young people’ clothes and possibly even an affair with the next door neighbour. A quarter life crisis on the other hand – well that is different, even Hollywood could not make a horror films as scary as that. As recent graduate Rebecca Pates puts it: “Since the age

of four, you’ve known the following year you will go back to school or college or university and then suddenly, there is this big blank part of your life which you’re not used to filling.” But what happens when you are in the quarter life crisis? Nothing much really, it is like a casual stroll in the park – well, until the clouds overhead slowly blacken, swell up and then drench you in a deluge of confusion, self-doubt and the crippling fear of not knowing what to do next. The world can be a scary place which you are looking at from the bottom of a mountain. One minute you are the biggest fish in the pond, the next you are barely a drop in the ocean. That is why it is so daunting making the transition from adolescence to a credit card holding, mortgage paying, 9 to 5 working, full blown adult. And unlike our grandparents who had their entire lives mapped out from the day they were born, our generation has been both cursed and blessed with endless possibility.
And the internet does not help. Social media has made a crisis of identity even more acute for millennials, now it is practically impossible not to scroll through feeds and not instantly succumb to self-loathing as you are bombarded daily with other people’s successes and how much better their lives are than yours. Not to mention that modern society is obsessed with youth and achieving success as quickly as possible, leading you to constantly compare yourself to those achieving more, quicker and younger than you.
“Malala Yousafzai received a Nobel Prize at 17, Jennifer Lawrence won an Oscar by 22, Emilia Cline signed a three book deal by 25 – Jesus. What am I doing with my life?” So what do you do in a quarter life crisis? Instantly you panic and then you panic some more. And when you are all panicked out, finally two things go through your mind: firstly you think about doing a masters in some vein hope
of recapturing your glorious university days and more importantly, avoiding the real world for just one more year. However, the potential reality of being saddled with even more debt, quickly dashes that dream. Secondly, you think about working some dead end job in the hopes that within 6 months you have made enough money to pack your bags and go ‘find yourself’ in South-East Asia, away from the stress of the west. You decide to follow the latter. But it never leads to riding elephants in India and shaving your head in Tibet, because before you know it you are trapped in the seduction of the easy pay cheque and your parents have suddenly decided to start charging you rent – so yeah, welcome to the quarter life crisis, it is going to be a bumpy ride.

AHEAD OF THEIR SOLD OUT SHOW AT THE OLD FIRE STATION, NERVE SPOKE TO NUMBER ONE ALBUM-SELLING AND NOW, BRIT NOMINATED BAND, BLOSSOMS FROM EVERYTHING LIKE THEIR LIFE ON THE ROAD, TO THEIR ODD PRE-SHOW RITUALS… With a staggering number of live dates in 2016, it’s fair to say that Blossoms number one debut album was well deserved. Despite this, the band stays humble as they chat about touring life. Lead singer, Tom Ogden and drummer, Joe Donovan go off on a tangent about their worst and best experiences in the vast number of airports they have spent time in over the year. “I’d say Luton is up there with the worst. We were going to Romania the day after we had got to number one and we arrived at Luton airport… Not exactly the most glamorous place… You need bringing down though don’t you.” Turning to preshow antics the rock stars of Stockport open up on their, not so Rock n’ Roll routines, “We usually go for a spa actually, it’s nice before a gig to just get in a steam room, a Jacuzzi to just chill out, then spag-bol, get back to the venue and start having a few beers while we’re listen to some tunes and go on! It’s not a diva thing, we pay for it ourselves.” This then lead to an in depth conversation regarding Spaghetti Bolognese and Tom went as far as calling themselves ‘connoisseurs’ of the Italian dish. The guys have clearly endured an extensive amount of their time on the road into making it their duty to find and crown the restaurant who best serves the dish, Joe intercepts the conversation to name Jamie’s Italian as the winner. Drawing comparisons from The Doors to Arctic Monkey’s ‘Suck It and See’ phase, Blossoms appear to be a combination of every 80’s band our dad’s bang on about, but the only difference is that they come twenty years later. Rest assured, the leather jackets and overdue haircut look still remains. Ogden’s lyrics are the kind you see tattooed on a hipster kid’s skin:
mysterious, slightly ambiguous and eluding to the topic at hand, only making them all the more relatable. “With me it’s usually stuff about relationships, or I’ll read stuff and take it if it looks good written down or sounds quite dramatic. You know what I mean? I can’t explain it but I’m always looking for stuff and listening for things people say. I like song titles, I’ll read through things looking for song titles.” In my brief time spent with the five-piece Stockport band it was easy to see how they had built up such a dedicated and enthusiastic set of fans, their authenticity and down to earth attitude combines to give off a charming image, refreshing from the abundance of indie bands floating around the circuit currently with a very self entitled opinion of themselves. This modesty is not to be mistaken for a lack of confidence though, as Tom talks of the stigma that Manchester based bands often find themselves under the scrutiny of being compared to the big names that have come before them. “I wouldn’t say there’s a pressure, we embrace the whole thing, if we can get people talking about us in the same breath that’s pretty cool but you don’t really feel pressure because you’ve got to believe in your own songs as a band. We’ve had that kind of confidence from our early rehearsals, before anyone was making those comparisons.” Blossoms UK tour continues from March onwards and you can vote for them as British breakthrough act of the year at www.brits.co.uk/nominees. Five films
we are Looking Forward to in 2017
British gem Emma Watson stars as Belle in this iconic Disney remake that sets to follow the same success as the live action retellings of Cinderella and The Jungle Book. With a great cast and incredible cinematography and CGI, this flick will send you back to your childhood and make you momentarily forget about any university woes.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Marvel films never seem to disappoint, and the first instalment of this fan favourite was one of the best films to come out of 2014. This year we re-join Star Lord, Gamora and beloved Groot in an inter-galactic adventure that promises entertainment for everyone.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
The Zookeepers Wife
Academy award nominee Jessica Chastain stars in this film based on an incredible and emotional true story based in Poland during World War 2. This story follows a Zookeeper hiding Jewish people within her zoo to fight against the Nazi invasion, saving hundreds of lives in the process. This film is set to be emotional, powerful and thought provoking, and hopefully a cinematic
Sceptics may think that the story of our spidey-superhero is overplayed, but this Marvel remake adds a new twist to the story. This time we see Spiderman with a much younger face and we’re also one step closer to seeing him join The Avengers. How cool is that?
Spiderman: Homecoming
Kingsman: The Golden Circle This epic spy film returns with dreamy Taron Egerton back as everyone’s favourite working class hero Eggsy. However, this time this elite group of British spies hit the USA for what they describe as a “crazy” sequel to the original spy/ comedy film. But will Colin Firth be making a triumphant return? We have to wait and see…
We all like emojis, and we have all sent a sarcastic smiley or the eggplant now and again, but a whole film dedicated to them? That’s just ridiculous. It is films like this that worry me about the future of Hollywood, and if this is a thing that is actually going to happen, what’s next? I dread to think…
Five films we CANNOT BELIEVE EXIST!
Emoji Movie
The problem with this film doesn’t concern the actual plot of the movie itself, but actually the recent footage from the making of the film that shows mistreatment towards dogs and animal abuse. A petition has now been made to boycott any and all showings of A Dog’s Purpose to show that there is no support for animal abuse, and that this behaviour is never acceptable.

A Dog’s Purpose
Normally, everything Pixar make turns to gold. But this film franchise really needs to die out. Cars is by far their worst creation, and while most of us could just about suffer through the sequel, a third instalment is crossing the line. And the fact this is realised before Toy Story 4 or Incredibles 2 is just heart-breaking.
Cars 3
FIFTY SHADES DARKER
Did anyone even watch the first one? Or was it just our mums? This incredibly cringey trilogy is still lingering on, no matter how much we pray it ends. And no, a track by Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift won’t change my mind. Sorry. Does anyone else not think that this is just an entire ball of cringe? With little else to offer but watching half-naked good looking people run about on the beach, this isn’t a ground-breaking piece of cinema. Zac Efron is great, but not enough to justify sitting through this.

LIFE BEHIND
DJing at a house party has to be one of the most stressful but fun experiences. Turning the kitchen of a flat or the lounge of a house into a dancefloor and playing in front of friends is very rewarding. But wait, do I have that song she asked for? That guy just moaned at me because he doesn’t like House and this other guy wants me to drop some Drum and Bass! Okay good the crowd is loving this mix they’re up and dancing, but now most of them are going outside for a smoke! This is hard work…
NM // 31
I recently played at a party with a mate of mine and we were both looking forward to it because it was going to be huge. When I say huge I mean there was about 200 people spanning across two flats both housing DJs with lights, strobes and some mean sound systems. For the flat I was playing in, my co-DJ, ThisIsCallum and I were asked to play a mixture of Chart, House, Tech House, Garage and Drum & Bass. The other flat was playing RnB, Hip Hop and Trap music
so there really was something for everyone. When people started to arrive we went in with some Tech House which went down a treat and the dancefloor quickly packed out. A lot of people don’t understand that when you have a DJ performing while people are starting to arrive, you can’t just tear it up and expect people to start going all out with some mean dance moves, this being said Tech House is a great place to start.
THE DECKS
DJ Harvey Squires delivers an insight into the complicated world of DJing and explains the taboos around the daunting task of performing at parties.
For those who don’t know or can’t exactly tell the differences between house music genres, Tech House is a house music subgenre that combines elements of techno with house. It is one of my personal favourites which I feel is hugely misunderstood, but I digress. At a previous house party, someone came up to me and said: “Have you even changed the song yet?” I had been playing for half an hour, so yes about ten times. Which DJ doesn’t like having their seamless mixes complimented! Playing in front of people does make DJs nervous even if it is just to a group of friends, so chastising them for playing too much of this and not enough of that, or not having ‘your’ song rather than showing a bit of appreciation for the skill that they are displaying is why some people get put off of fulfilling their ‘DJ dreams’. Getting out of the bedroom and into playing at bars and clubs is hard enough anyway because everyone and their mum is now a DJ. We also have to face the ignorance of the select few people who think DJs ‘just push buttons’.
I would like to see them even try to load two tracks onto my decks and get them beat matched together by ear, without any guidance. At a party not long ago I was half way through mixing two tracks and this guy waves his hand in front of my face and says: “What would happen if you stopped touching all those buttons and knobs for five seconds?” What he thought he was seeing was me just messing about with some faders and EQ knobs which was doing nothing. What I was actually doing was slowly bringing in the next track whilst also swapping the basslines, then applying a beat effect to create a smooth transition between the songs whilst simultaneously ‘trying’ to listen to my transition through my headphones. These are some of the many things DJs are doing whilst they are ‘ignoring’ you. Trust me we aren’t ignoring you we are just concentrating, be patient and most DJs will talk to you and happily take requests if they can fit them in. Well, back to this party I was banging on about at the start. Everyone was having a great time.
To round off my long stint of DJing, which included mixing back to back with another DJ that I only met that night, I dropped my famous Drum & Bass ‘power hour’ which actually got me noticed by a promoter who took down my details after he, alongside everyone else, had finished raving to my set. Being a DJ comes with a copious amount of work and practice so it feels really rewarding when you get the compliments for your mixing. For me, the reason I do it is for the reactions you get when you throw that track in that no one is expecting or the smiles you get when you create a mashup on the fly that gets everyone going. So, next time you’re at a party that has a live DJ playing, give them some love and appreciate the work they are putting in no matter what they are playing, it really does take some guts to do what they’re doing. Forget genres, just dance! Written by: Harvey Squires Designed by: Joshua Browne Image: Harvey Squires

LA LA LAND REVIEW By Reece Shrewsbury Just when you thought the musical was dead and buried, Damien Chazelle breathes new life into the genre with La La Land, a feel-good, highly stylised shoe-in for multiple Academy Awards. Having blown away the competition at the Golden Globes, it’s easy to see why the film was met with such success, with lead actors Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling doing some of the best work of their careers, and a surprisingly great job singing, too. The songs are terrific, capturing the journey of the protagonists in beautiful 3 minute sequences, accompanied with perfectly choreographed dances. “A Lovely Night” is a personal favourite, and is a shining example of the amazing work done to capture the chemistry between the two leads. Stone’s turn as Mia is the perfect realisation of the self-doubt and dreams that live in anybody aspiring for something exceptional, and this is made even better by Chazelle’s clear passion for the genre and the script, creatively capturing every feeling of joy, sorrow and elation with his outstanding direction. Believe everything you’ve heard about La La Land, it is simply breath-taking and a joy to behold.
WILEY GODFATHER
SUPERHANS @THE OLD FIRESTATION
By Shaquira Jeyasingh
By George McMillan
With the release of Godfather, Wiley has cemented his legacy as “The Wickedest MC Alive”.
More commonly known as ‘Super Hans’, his crazy character in the critically acclaimed BBC show ‘Peep Show’, Matt King rolled down to Bournemouth on the first week of December alongside his mates and of course, the Big Beat Manifesto, for what was set to be an interesting night.
The aptly named Godfather of Grime has smashed his way back onto the scene with an album full of songs that are guaranteed to be classics.Godfather is littered with features from the biggest names in grime (Skepta, JME and Ghetts, to name a few), but it is Wiley’s solo efforts that steal the show. In the opening track “Birds n Bars” Wiley crushes any concerns that he is anything less than a musical legend, spitting lyrics like “Even when I’m dead, my vibe will be alive.” In “Can’t Go Wrong” he proclaims, “They could never control how man are doin’ it, it’s authentic, can’t go wrong.” The sentiment rings true throughout Godfather, with authenticity and a ‘back to basics’ theme evident in every track. It may have taken him a while, but we can now say with confidence: the old Wiley is back.
After debuting his show at Glastonbury earlier in the year, Hans later announced he would be going on tour around the UK much to the excitement of the Peep Show cult fan base. Despite a half-filled The Old Fire Station, Super Hans fans were not left disappointed with an evening of ‘big beats’, catch phrases from the character’s catalogue, and a definite sense of dread. With a two-hour slot he rolled off hit after hit. From Bowie to The Beatles, and Depeche Mode to Kanye West, before coming back on for an encore with a bass-heavy remix of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The music was eclectic, and simply amazing. At one point it seemed as though the set would be cut short when in true Super Hans character, he lit a cigarette on stage much to the dismay of the venue’s security who looked as though they were about to escort him offstage, but judging by the heavily intoxicated audience they went for the safe bet and let him finish as to avoid an imminent riot from the hardcore fan base. To sum the evening up in one word, it was ‘moreish’.

PERFECT STRANGERS NO MORE Singer and songwriter, JP Cooper, spoke to Nerve News Entertainment Editor, Charlie Kinsella, about life beyond 'Perfect Strangers' and being given the chance to perform at one of Europe's hottest music events.

J
ohn Paul Cooper (or JP for short) is one of the UK music scene’s up and coming fresh talents. 2017 may have only just begun, but for this guy, it’s got off to quite the start. JP’s solo single ‘September Song’, was released back in September of 2016. But since then, the single has continued to climb in the charts, having entered the top ten by mid-January; “Having my first [kinda] top twenty, and rising it seems, is an amazing start to the year. Everything seems to be starting in the right place this year.” As well as chart success, JP also performed at the Eurosonic music festival in January, hosted by European music platform ‘Eurosonic Nooderslag’. The event held in Holland, gives artists from around the world, the opportunity to showcase their work to an international audience. JP said; “It’s quite hard to actually get to play, so I think we’re quite lucky… it opens up the artists to a lot of the bookers for festivals around Europe.” “So obviously, we’re going there with the hope to meet a few people…get to play to some of the Dutch fans and hopefully it will end up with us being out and about around Europe a lot more over the summer.” Although JP has done festivals before in the UK, Eurosonic is attended by industry professionals and JP said that this is why it’s so important for acts to make their mark at this event. However, in his mind, any festival helps to push a musician’s career forward; “That’s the great thing about festivals, you tend to [kinda] stumble across things that you wouldn’t have really found... it’s great for reaching a broader audience.” Having said that, JP is no stranger to chart success, providing the vocals for UK chart hit ‘Perfect Strangers’ by Jonas Blue. The track made it to number 2 in the official UK music charts and has become a major hit in the house music genre. “At the beginning, it was a very modern way of writing together. Jonas… had written the backing track and he’d sent it through to me. I hadn’t even met him. It [kinda] came through some other people I knew.” Cooper added; “The first time we actually met was when we recorded a live session for it. Since then, we’ve done a lot of festivals together… so getting to know him, he’s an amazing guy.” The two also collaborated in the BBC RADIO 1 Live Lounge during the summer, to record a cover of Dua Lipa’s, ‘Hotter than Hell’, mashed up with the horn section of Major Lazor’s ‘Light it Up’. The performance has racked up over 145,000 views on YouTube. 2017 looks promising for JP, with a direct focus on his solo work, rather than recording more collaborations; “For now, I’m taking a bit of time just to focus on me. “I’ve got a song that is on the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ soundtrack, so yeah, plenty to kick off the year.” But don’t fear, this singer-songwriter hasn’t ruled out more sensational collaborations in the future; “I love collaborating so they’ll be lots more in the future.”

ITS OFFICIAL TRUMP IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
O
n January 20, people across the world sat down and watched the infamous Donald Trump become the 45th president of the United States of America. It is funny to think that a few months ago, we were watching the states turn from blue to red in a matter of hours. Some of us were jumping for joy whilst others were bewildered and still in shock hours after it was announced that Donald Trump had won the US election. As I sat and watched the inauguration ceremony, I noticed a vast lack of people in the crowds. News organisations took a crowd photo from both Trump and Obama’s inaugurations and compared them. Perhaps it was the rainy weather that kept people away or maybe it is some sort of pathetic fallacy for what is to come in the near future. It was clear that Obama had a enormous
turnout in 2009 compared to the new president. The first 100 days is known to measure the early success of a president and in Obama’s first couple of months he signed the equality for women’s pay law, legislature for a healthcare reform and supported the UN declaration on sexual orientation and gender identity. I cannot wait to see what Trump will do first. In past interviews, Trump promised that on his first day in the White House he would begin working on the so-called wall on the border of Mexico, ask congress to revoke Obamacare and cancel Obama’s orders on immigration. So far, he has withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and has cut funding for international groups that perform abortions. The order comes two days after the Women’s Marches that took place across the
globe, show ing the depth of the anti-trump movement. There were 20 countries that marched against the newly sworn in leader however the main focus was on the overcrowded march in Washington. The vast amount of banners and a call for action conquered over the turnout of Trump’s inauguration just a couple days before. The London March organisers are now asking the protesters to email and write to Theresa May about Donald Trump. They want to ensure May’s commitment to reaffirming the UK’s human rights. Theresa will be the first foreign leader to visit the president at The White House and I’m slightly intrigued to find out what will happen on her visit. Both Brexit and the presidency have swamped the globe but the only thing we can do is sit and watch the events unravel.

Kim Kardashian breaking her social media silence
Kim Kardashian West is back in full force and breaking the internet once again. After a three month break in the wake of her terrifying Paris robbery in October, the social media queen has finally broken her silence, but is she back to her old ways? After Kim was held at gunpoint and had millions of pounds worth of possessions stolen, it has undoubtedly left her with a severe mental impact. It is clear that in the past months, the star has been figuring out whether she wanted to come back to sharing her life with the public. Younger sister, Khloe Kardashian spoke on behalf of Kim a week after the robbery, stating that “it’s just a wake-up call to make a lot of life adjustments.” And it was indeed Kim who had the journey to make back from the unrecognisable place she found herself, after sharing intimate details of her life with tens of millions of people every day. “This is a really serious matter for Kim. I think that’s really personal as to when, that emotional terror, you could move on from that. I think for us it’s all a wakeup call for all of us, but definitely just to make sure our sister’s OK.” Kim made a low key social media return, by her first posted Snapchats including images of herself and her mum and also uploaded pictures on Instagram with her
NM // 39
family in polaroid’s. The message behind what she’s put on Instagram so far seems fairly clear: No matter what happens, it’s all about my family. After posting emotive images of her family, Kim confirmed that allegations of any divorce between herself and husband, Kanye West were false. Yet, she has now ditched the emotive images and is back to living the high life, posing on a private plane as she jets off to Dubai. Is the reality star back to her flashy ways? Adoring fans were ecstatic to see the queen of all things extravagant back to her high maintenance lifestyle, while others claimed that she was ‘as fake as ever.’ However, it is good to see that Kim is bouncing back from what must have been a traumatic experience. It is also clear that this has taught her an unpleasant lesson to not be so open with the world, and to not share every aspect of her life with millions of people. With technology such as Snapchat and Facebook allowing others to identify your location, we live in an age where you have to be wary of the impacts caused by the pressing of a button. “Drunk girls that wear short skirts provoke rape”
The idea that clothing can lead to a person’s sexual assault might sound familiar to you. Statement’s such as “she was asking for it” have gone under the radar for years, along with rape victims actually being asked what type of clothing they were wearing. This ludicrous concept blames the women themselves for the act of violence, rather than the men carrying out the attack. In a recent Sky News debate, Stephen Dixon prompted anger after suggesting that drunk women who wear short skirts must take personal responsibility if they are sexually assaulted. Alongside weather woman, Nazaneen Ghaffar who ignorantly questioned “why are they wearing short skirts when they go out – for what reason would you wear a short skirt?” A guest on the show responded; “If you are walking down the street and you get pushed in the face are you responsible for having left your house? Women are free citizens in our society and they’re allowed to be out and they are allowed to drink.” Although there has been many myths about sexual violence, in a day in age where the UK are on the path to completely equal rights, it has disheartened the nation that derogatory opinions such as these are allowed to be broadcast. Dixon has created a social media frenzy and has been heavily criticised for his comments, which have been labelled as “disgusting” and “disgraceful”. The question has been raised by Twitter users whether - if a man was assaulted or attacked while intoxicated, would anyone ask what they were wearing or how much he had to drink? It has been argued that Stephen was playing devil’s advocate, but it seems he bit off more than he could chew. Ironically, just days after the Sky News broadcast, half a million people protested in the US in a women’s march to demonstrate the equality of the sexes. The march also focused on Donald Trump’s agendas with abortion, gay rights and diversity. Labour MP Yvette Cooper addressed the crowds stating that “When the most powerful man in the world says it’s okay to sexually assault women because you are rich and powerful we have to stand up and say no way.” Trumps presidency has already highlighted that it has become the aim of our society to relieve a rapist of any fault, attempting to make the victim accept part of the responsibility. It is important to remember that the fault of any rape is with the rapist. If both men and women continue to empower the world by standing up for what is right, it won’t be long until accusations such as these are discarded for good.

ANALYSING GARETH SOUTHGATE. THE FUTURE? S
am Allardyce’s comments leading to the premature end of his brief England tenure came as a shock to many, but despite the damning words casting a dark shadow over the uncertainty between football and its unseen hierarchal powers, there was a hint of sympathy surrounding the separation of a man and his dream job. But overshadowing that subtle hint was a big question: where now for England? Weeks of speculation as to who would succeed Roy Hodgson to coach England’s senior football team ended with a name that most largely agreed on, a man whose career purpose had been leading to this moment, a man who threw it all away sitting at a table with an undercover Telegraph reporter. There was one other name briefly in contention though, and he, Gareth Southgate, is now England’s new coach. But does Southgate have a plan to make England a side who can be feared again? Is he the right man for the job? On an initial temporary contract, Southgate oversaw the England senior side across four matches. England’s 3-0 victory against Scotland in the Euro 2018 qualifiers was the standout highlight, but two draws and a meagre 2-0 victory against Malta wasn’t enough to convince all. He was handed a four-year deal. Four-year-contract doesn’t really mean anything anymore, Allardyce being just one example. Coaches are as dispensable as a three-pack of razors, despite the England executives dubbing Southgate as a man for the future. But, it wouldn’t be fair to judge Southgate without looking a little further then a Martin Glenn press conference. Coaching the under-21’s from 2013 onwards, Southgate’s finest memories will be England’s success in the Toulon Tournament, a competition that pegs national side’s together from all corners of the globe. England’s last success in the tournament came in 1994,
and Southgate and his young guns ended a 22-year wait for a Toulon trophy. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was named player of the tournament whilst Lewis Baker grabbed the top-goalscorer crown, both of whom play for Chelsea. The side won all five of their matches throughout the competition, whilst overcoming highly-rated France 2-1 in the final. It was an impressive feat for 46-year-old Southgate. Southgate’s involvement within the England set-up is argued to be key to his appointment, understanding how affairs within the national side are dealt with, not least managing the relationship with clubs. But Southgate also managed Middlesbrough before his time within the England setup, spanning a three-year period between 2006 and 2009. Taking over from Steve McClaren in the summer of 2006, Southgate inherited a side that had seen a fair share of success in the two years previous to his appointment. McClaren had guided Boro to 7th place in the 2004/05 season, whilst qualifying for the UEFA Cup; they would go on to place runners up the year after, losing to Sevilla in the final, and despite finishing 14th in the league, there were high expectations from fans to see similar success from Southgate’s tenure. But Southgate did not live up to expectations, and after placing 12th and 13th in his first two seasons, Middlesbrough were relegated in Southgate’s third term in charge; he was sacked. His record on Riverside leaves much to be desired. In 151 games, Southgate oversaw just 45 victories as coach, a 29.8% win record (Draw 43, Lost 63). And so, the blip on Southgate’s CV will remain as a warning sign for the FA and England fans alike, but for once England have a manager that is of home origin. Hopefully he can prove his doubters wrong.

EVALUATING SIR ANDY MURRAY’S AUSTRALIAN OPEN CHANCES The Scot will be hoping to add to his major title haul at Melbourne Park Topping 2016 will be hard for Andy Murray. The Scot’s annus mirabilis finished with an unprecedented third Sports Personality of the Year award and a knighthood, recognising the superhuman feats Murray had achieved in the previous twelve months. 2016 saw Murray reach the final of three Grand Slam events, win Wimbledon and become the first tennis player in history to retain their Olympic gold medal - all before the notion of achieving the world number one ranking was raised. However, a glorious autumn campaign set Murray up for a showdown with Novak Djokovic at the ATP World Tour Finals, with the winner of the match ending the year at the summit of men’s tennis – something Murray hadn’t even considered six months in to the year. Nonetheless, Murray prevailed, beating Djokovic 6-3 6-4 in a comprehensive victory that cemented his status as the world’s best and setting the Scot up perfectly for 2017. Tennis’ first stop in the New Year is in Melbourne, for the Australian Open. As this magazine goes to print Murray has just eased in to the fourth round with a routine win over the American Sam Querrey. However, the big news from Melbourne is that Djokovic - the defending champion - is already out, having suffered a shock loss to Denis Istomin.

The Australian Open has been a thorn in Murray’s side for several years. A six-time finalist, the Scot is yet to carve his name on the trophy. However, with Djokovic already out, this year represents Murray’s best chance to add the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup to his haul of major titles. When asked about his chances before the tournament, Murray said: “I do love it here. I love the conditions.” “I have played really well here over the years, and just haven’t managed to obviously get over the final hurdle.” “I think I’m in a decent position, for sure, to do it. I think I have a chance to win here. “Obviously nothing’s guaranteed. But, yeah, why not? I’m playing well. Practice has been good. I feel healthy. I’ll give it a good shot.” Murray will play the German world number 50 Mischa Zverev on Sunday in the last 16. It’s not hard to imagine that the Sunday after will see the world number one standing on Rod Laver Arena with the trophy held aloft.

PREVIEW A look at the sides competing for this year’s title. Written by: Jonathan Coles
ENGLAND
Last year’s Grand Slam winners enter 2017 on the back of an unbeaten 2016, which also included a series win in Australia and victories over South Africa and Argentina in the Autumn Internationals. Understandably, England enter the tournament as favourites and are odds-on to repeat the Grand Slam. Should they claim back-to-back Slams, they will make world history by becoming the first Tier One nation to win 19 Tests in a row, overtaking New Zealand's current record of 18. However, victory is not assured. Ireland in Ireland is always a tough proposition, and injuries to the pack have caused slight unsettlement. Still, England are the team to beat.
ITALY
The perennial whipping boys enter this year’s tournament with little to be optimistic about, even compared to previous years. Although introducing new blood after the World Cup can be seen as a positive, the extent of inexperience could be an issue. Additionally, Italy’s draw – just two home games, against England and Scotland – has seen them dealt a tough hand. Whilst there is little doubt that we’ll see a committed, tenacious Italian side, there is also little doubt about where they’ll finish. It’s hard to see the Italians leaving the foot of the table this year.
NM // 47
IRELAND
With the Irish going in to this year’s tournament with a completely healthy squad, you’d have to argue that they represent the biggest threat to England’s tilt at the Grand Slam. For them to succeed the men in green will be hoping that Jonny Sexton, their influential fly-half stays healthy throughout. If this happens, bet on the Irish to run England close. Ireland also have the advantage of playing England in Dublin this year, which could prove crucial.
SCOTLAND Scotland should enter the Six Nations with confidence after winning an important game for their 2019 World Cup campaign against Argentina. For so long the second worst team in the tournament, this year the Scots will be hoping to achieve more than a win over Italy and proud losses elsewhere. Interestingly, Scotland haven’t opened their campaign with a win for more than a decade. Whilst the majority would argue that playing England in the first rubber means this is unlikely to change, there is cause for optimism. A flowing back line and a scrum capable of contesting with the world’s best comprises a solid foundation. If the Scot’s can triumph in the Calcutta Cup, who knows?
FRANCE
It’s an oft-used cliché that French rugby has two personalities – one side consisting of mercurial flair and attacking, expansive rugby; the other composed of laziness, arrogance and heavy losses. With a new coach and a new captain, the French will be hoping that it is Dr Jekyll and not Mr Hyde who starts to appear more frequently. Two home games to open their campaign (the first of which is against Italy) means that the French team could get off to a flyer. However, even if two wins on the first two weekends are achieved, it’s difficult to see the French winning the whole tournament. An improvement on last year’s poor showing is much more achievable.
WALES
For Warren Gatland’s men it’s all about consistency. The Autumn Internationals saw Wales showcase all of their different personalities; they were embarrassed by Australia, then struggled against Japan before beating a talented South Africa side. If Wales are to succeed in this year’s tournaments they need quicker ball and fewer mistakes. However, as the victory against South Africa showed, they are capable. Expect them to be challenging for the title come the final weekend.

ALTHOUGH ALASTAIR COOK DESERVES TIME, HE MIGHT NOT GET IT COOK IS CONSIDERING RELINQUISHING THE ENGLAND CAPTAINCY ROLE Ex-England batsman Geoffrey Boycott feels Cook should step down as Test captain soon to give Root time to settle in to the role. “Cook is a top professional and a top batsman,” said Boycott. “But I don’t think it’s helpful to him, the team or English cricket if he’s in two minds what to do. “This hasn’t just happened. It’s obvious that this has been on his mind for some time,” he added. “Whoever captains in England this summer has seven Tests [against South Africa and West Indies] before the biggest series of all in the Ashes. “If it is going to be Root - which it will be - he needs seven Test matches to put his stamp on it. Players need to get with his style.” There is another issue to consider before Root assumes the role. There is a touch of the poisoned chalice for batsmen who take on the captain’s role. Many successful batsmen - of which Root is one – struggle for runs once they assume leadership, finding it difficult to balance the responsibility of both roles. In fact, it is testament to Cook that he has continued to be England’s rock at the top of the order during a sometimes tumultuous captaincy.
It’s hard not to feel for Alastair Cook. The England cricket captain has never quite found the favour of the public and pundits alike, despite having led his side to several famous series wins during his four-year reign. Now, in the wake of England’s 4-0 series defeat in India last month, it has emerged that Cook is considering stepping down from the role with Joe Root being touted as his most likely successor. When pressed about the issue after the fifth Test match, Cook simply replied: “I’ve got to go away and do some thinking”. Unfortunately for Cook and England, time isn’t on their side - an Ashes series in Australia looms large on the horizon.
England will need Joe Root at his best against Australia, so need to ensure he has found a balance between astute captaincy and continuing as one of the world’s best batsmen. If Alastair Cook does step down in the near future, his tenure at the helm of English cricket should be remembered fondly. Joe Root could do worse than emulate his successor. AFC BOURNEMOUTH Mid Term Report
Following their fine first campaign in the Premier League, AFC Bournemouth have set about avoiding the dreaded second season syndrome. They carried on undeterred over the second half of 2016 after avoiding relegation with ease at the first time of asking, but as Jason Lewis writes there is still room for improvement.
After another busy summer in the transfer window that saw a host of new faces join Eddie Howe’s side including Jordon Ibe from Liverpool for £15m, Bournemouth began the season with back-to-back defeats at home to Manchester United and away at West Ham. In the second round of the League Cup, a much-changed side scraped past Morecambe before the first team returned to lose a lead late on at Crystal Palace. It provided the first point of the season, but overall it was a disappointing start to the season.

Festive Highs and Lows Jack the Cherry In one the most dramatic deadline day moves in recent years, Jack Wilshere made the switch to Dorset from Arsenal in the search of regular football. He did not start the game against West Brom, featuring off the bench, but it seemed no coincidence that this match provided Bournemouth with their first league win. A slick finish from Callum Wilson scoring his first goal since his ACL injury in September 2015 was enough to secure all three points. The Cherries then travelled to the Etihad, but were truly outclassed by Pep Guardiola’s side. The League Cup run was cut short in embarrassing fashion with a home defeat in extra-time against a Preston side who themselves made changes. A home game against Everton offered Bournemouth another 1-0 victory thanks to a stunning strike from Junior Stanislas.
Consistently Inconsistent Throughout October and November in-between the customary international breaks, the Cherries showed real signs of progression whilst also failing to turn up at all at times. October saw three solid performances with a dramatic 2-2 draw at Watford, a 6-1 hammering at home to Hull before holding Tottenham to a goalless draw in a televised lunchtime kick off. The back-to-back defeats that followed stalled any momentum that had been building. At Middlesbrough, Bournemouth were outplayed from start to finish. A week later, Sunderland hardly had a kick, but snatched a 2-1 win despite playing the last half hour with 10 men. A response in one of the most unlikely of places followed and gave the Cherries their first away win of the season. Although it came in fortuitous fashion, the 1-0 victory at Stoke gave a much needed but short term boost with November ending with a battling lose at Arsenal.
A busy December schedule began with arguably the game of the Premier League season. 3-1 down with 15 minutes on the clock, a Ryan Fraser led comeback saw Bournemouth claim a historic 4-3 victory over Liverpool. The pattern of the season followed with defeat at Burnley and then returning home to beat Leicester with ease. The search for consecutive league wins continued as Southampton came and put the Cherries to the sword and it was festive blues against league leaders Chelsea. The year concluded with only the second away win of the season at struggling Swansea.
New Year, Same Story 2017 provided no change in the tale of Bournemouth’s season. An excellent performance and 3-0 lead against, ended up becoming holding on for a point. The FA Cup went much the same way at the League Cup. 11 changes to the side that played against Arsenal, saw a woeful performance against Millwall duly taken apart by the League One outfit. The Lions did well to only run out 3-0 winners at the Den. To make things worse there was no response in the Premier League this time around as away struggles continued with a defeat to Hull, before a identical 2-2 draw at home to Watford.
Shape Up or Tail Out No Bournemouth fan can complain with their 12th place position at the end of January, already 10 points clear of the bottom three. Nevertheless, to go through 22 games of the season without back-to-back victories and shipping 39 goals in that time there is work to be done. Some organisational improvements at the back and more consistent cutting edge in front of goal and the Cherries could muster a top half finish. Continue as they have thus far and they may slide like they did last season once safety is secured.

ANTHONY JOSHUA The British heavyweight is a breath of fresh air in a sport saturated with money
It’s not hard to imagine how Anthony Joshua’s career would look plotted on a graph. The British heavyweight’s rise has been exponential since his gold medal win at London’s Olympic Games in 2012 Now, the Watford born boxer is preparing for his biggest fight yet – taking on Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley in April.
Following Joshua’s third round knockout of Eric Molina, it was announced that the Brit would take on the Ukrainian great in a fight many have been calling for. On the surface it seems that Joshua versus Klitschko is the perfect tale – old against new; East against West; power against attrition. However, there are voices from certain corners of the boxing world that argue this fight has come too late. Klitschko will be 41 by the time boxer’s touch gloves, which some feel is too old.
NM // 53
Critics also cite the Ukrainian’s loss to Tyson Fury, claiming that it should be the semi-retired ‘Gypsy King’ who is taking on Joshua instead. Despite this, there can be little dispute that Joshua will be the best practicing heavyweight boxer in the world if he defeats Klitschko. Therefore, it is a credit to Joshua that throughout all of his successes, he’s remained so grounded.
But I learnt money can’t make me, because if I show someone with money a watch they’ll say, ‘Well, I’ve got three of them.’ It’s about staying focused, your class, your morals, what you’re about, more than just boxing. That’s why I’m on my grind. Boxinga is just part of the journey. All the other stuff is a bonus, man, trust me.”
When asked about how he stays so grounded during his post-fight press conference after knocking out Eric Molina, Joshua said: “This is all nice, the lights and stuff, but it ain’t about the money. When I was on the streets, hanging out, doing my thing I was like, cool, you can come around and I’ll show you a little watch. We’d be riding our bikes, and I went,
In a sport famed for its plutomania, Joshua is a breath of fresh air. Yes, you could argue that he’s hardly going to be out of pocket after the Klitschko fight. But, such is the way Joshua conducts himself, it’s hard to care. The boy from Watford has already endeared himself to the public. And he’s only just getting started.

SPURS’ SUMMER STANDOUT Written by: Michael Cox Designed by: Joshua Browne Image: Premier League via Google
Arriving in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £11milllion, Victor Wanyama’s switch from South Coast Southampton to Spurs went largely unnoticed, writes Michael Cox.
But
for those that did notice, the Kenyan’s role at White Hart Lane was widely agreed within the English media to be that of a squad player, adding depth to Spurs’ midfield ahead of a season that would see Champions League football.
In addition, among midfielders, only Juan Mata (90), Georgio Wijnaldum (89) and Ander Herrera (89) have recorded, on average, a higher pass completion percentage than Wanyama (88) in the league this term (players who have played 16 games or more).
As Eric Dier grew into a key centre-defensive midfield role for Tottenham last term, few believed the Englishman would lose his place in the starting eleven to the former Celtic man, but Wanyama has proved crucial to top-four chasing Spurs so far this season.
Critics will say the Kenyan has a tendency to pass backward/ sideways, but his tally of 21 key passes this season would suggest otherwise, as only Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen can boast more within the Spurs set up.
Wanyama has not only snatched the starting spot, the 25-yearold is the only first team Spurs squad player to have featured in all 22 of the North London side’s Premier League fixtures; he has only missed 36 minutes of top flight football this term.
Since finding form after crashing out of the Champion’s League group stages, Mousa Dembele, supposedly the finer technician, has partnered Wanyama above the back-line, but it is the latter who has contributed most offensively between the pair.
Among the goalscorers during Spurs’ comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Hull City was Wanyama, but it was his maiden Tottenham strike against Crystal Palace that proved most important, rising highest to head from a corner handing his new side three points and a 1-0 victory; Dembele is yet to notch an assist or goal the Premier League season. Wanyama’s case proves that no matter how settled a squad looks in this modern era, hard work and quality can knock players off their perch. He has not only succeeded in doing so, the former Southampton man has become a vital ingredient to Mauricio Pochettino’s everdeveloping Spurs project.
