VARSIT Y 2017 IS FINALLY HERE AND WE COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED! For anyone that hasn’t seen or heard of this event before, Varsity is an annual sporting tournament where athletes from local rivals Bournemouth University and Southampton Solent University compete in over 25 fixtures. This year our teams will fight to retain the Varsity trophy for another year, having taken it home in the inaugural Varsity event of 2016 in a 14-7 fixture victory. This year BU are lucky enough to hold the home advantage once again, allowing us the opportunity to expand this event so it’s bigger and better than ever! Our 2017 Varsity will see the introduction of two new sports (Volleyball and Tennis) giving more athletes the opportunity to compete but also giving our supporters even more variety. Games start on Talbot Campus from 10.30am and 12.00pm at Bournemouth Sports Club. There will be a variety of sports to watch throughout the day with all sorts of entertainment for everyone including: Nerve Radio, Viper 10, garden bars, BBQ, speed guns and other give it a go sessions. BU Teams will be wearing rainbow laces for the second year in support of Stonewall and “Acceptance without Exception” #rainbowlaces. Make sure you look out for these and our players in their Varsity 2017 T-Shirts. Varsity 2017 will culminate with the showcase of Women’s Football and Men’s Cricket at Bournemouth Sports Club, Chapel Gate. Last year saw 1200 people at our final fixture, we encourage all students, staff, friends, family and alumni to save the date and come on down to support TeamBU. This spectacle of sport is in every athlete’s calendar, giving our students a final opportunity to represent Bournemouth University in their chosen sport before the end of another sporting season and some their university career.

#TeamBU will be hoping to get their own back in this year’s fixture, following a defeat to #TeamSolent in last year’s competition. The players who took part in that game will be chomping at the bit to show that the league table isn’t representative of their quality on the pitch. Rest assured, #TeamBU know it won’t be easy, as #TeamSolent are a division above them in the University tables (finishing the season in a respectable 3rd place following 3 wins and 5 defeats), but an underdog upset would lift the spirits and indicate the foundations on which success can be built in next year’s campaign. A common theme among BU’s teams, a win against #TeamSolent will be the signal to “drink heavily” during the evening. Mind you, a defeat might have the same effect. AMERICAN FOOTBALL

A RESPECTABLE BEGINNING

FORTUNE CHANGES FOR #TeamBU

Bournemouth University Mixed 1st’s American Football team have had a difficult season, finishing the campaign second from bottom and on 4 points with just 2 wins from 6 games. Despite this, a goal difference figure that’s more reasonable than their lower-league counterparts suggest they haven’t made the wins against them easy for the opposition.

The 2A South West division got off to a troubling start for #TeamBU when they lost their first game in a heavy 28-2 away defeat to University of Gloucestershire Mixed 1st. It was also the first time in BU’s history that they have beaten the American football side of Plymouth. Similarly to the #TeamBU Ultimate Frisbee team, a debut defeat would go on to inspire two consecutive wins for the side from the South Coast, first in the nature of a convincing 24-8 victory over Bath Spa University Mixed 1st, and then – back on home soil – a huge 13-12 win over title favorites University of Plymouth Mixed 1st – it was the latter’s only defeat of the season.

Unfortunately for #TeamBU, they would not taste victory again for the rest of the season, as the matches that followed resulted in 3 successive defeats, turning what could have been a decent league table position into one that leaves a lot to be desired. Losing 17-12 to Oxford Brookes, 7-0 to University of Bristol, and then 2-0 to Aberystwyth was a tough way to end their season, but #TeamBU suggest that those annoying January exams and assignment deadlines were part of the reason why, with so many key first string players in third year missing out, the team struggled to pick up results.

Looking ahead to the big game against #TeamSolent, #TeamBU will be desperate to get revenge, following a draw and a defeat to their rivals in the league this season. Meanwhile, #TeamSolent will be hoping for more of the same, albeit in a season that has seen them finish just above Bournemouth on 8 points with 2 wins and 2 draws from 10 games, only behind their University of Southampton counterparts on goal difference. Dylan’s is the venue for a pint each for #TeamBU if they are to pick up a win at Varsity 2017. Clearly, the captain has been inspired by Claudio Ranieri’s philopshy to reward his team.

FIRST YEAR’S STRUGGLE TO FIND CHEMISTRY

RESULTS DON’T REFLECT PERFORMANCES

It’s been a season to forget for Bournemouth 1st’s badminton team, who find themselves relegated to division three following a difficult season in which they failed to pick up a single win. 3 draws and 7 defeats mean they end up 5 points behind Southampton Solent in division two ahead of Varsity 2017.

Defeats came via the hands of University of Southampton Men’s 2nd before an 8-0 loss to University of the West of England Men’s 1st in the cup. Bournemouth were then once again able to find some sort of stability in a 4-4 draw with University of Bristol Men’s 2nd, but that result would be followed by two more successive defeats, to University of the West of England Men’s 1st and University of Bath Men’s 3rd, before yet another 4-4 draw, this time with University of Southampton Men’s 2nd. That would-be Bournemouth’s third and final draw of the season, as Southampton Solent, University of the West of England, and the University of Bristol all inflicted defeats on the side from the South Coast to dump them at the bottom of the table.

Despite all of this, #TeamBU suggest that they were “able to establish some partnerships, even if it was a little too late”, and that “the whole season hasn’t been nearly as bad as it seems on paper”. Accordingly, the team feel that they can have “high hopes for the following seasons, considering the talent of some of the first year players”.

A first 8-0 defeat to University of Bath Men’s 3rd was followed by a 4-4 draw with, of all teams, Southampton Solent University Men’s 1st who only turned up with four players instead of six, something that #TeamBU humorously admit is the reason they were able to pick up the draw. But the following teams they faced would all field a full side, and made life difficult for Bournemouth as a result.

They’ve had an emphatic season in the Premier South Division and will also have the confidence of last year’s Varsity success. PENDULUM SWUNG AGAINST CHAMPIONS EXETER

CREDIBLE SEASON ENDED WITH A MIXED 2017

The team got off to a tricky start down the road against Southampton but bounced back straight away back at home against Cardiff, a victory that turned out to be crucial in terms of the league standings by the end of the season. The team struggled for momentum in the early stages, winning then losing a few times in succession, all by fine margins.

Despite a rocky start to the season, the team were still playing well and faced two crucial fixtures against in-form Exeter. The first leg was a visit to the southwest team. Despite a valiant effort from the lads, they travelled home empty handed. They didn’t have to wait too long to seek revenge with Exeter visiting for the return fixture the following week. The team managed to more than hold their own and make plays under pressure in a close battle. They managed to pip it by 2 points and go into the break full of confidence.

A win against Middlesex in the first round of the cup gave the team a last 16 tie against Essex away from home back in February. With at least four fixtures to play in the New Year, the team had to secure their status in the Western 1A as a tight relegation battle was happening. With two victories against Plymouth and Swansea, focus turned to the cup game against Essex. The home team proved too strong for #teambu but following a 2nd place finish with another in the league is nothing to be ashamed with.

WESTERN 2A CONTINUES TO PROVE TOUGH BUT 2017 PROVED BETTER

BIG FINALE AGAINST BRISTOL 2ND’S

Pretty much a completely new team took to the court this year made up of 11 first years, 2 second years and a single final year student. The youthful team found the going tough from the start with a couple of tight losses to Winchester and Gloucestershire, followed by a heavy defeat in the cup to UWE 2nds.

3 defeats followed leading up to the end of 2016. A couple of fair 10 point losses left the side still with some hope going into the new year. A couple of victories both home and away against Marjons left BU all but clear of relegation. The team started to play a lot better, particularly in defence. The first win against University of St Mark & St John Mens 1s was a turning point for the side and 2017 wielded a very credible 60%-win ratio.

The team ended on Talbot Campus against 2nd in the league Bristol 2s. The defence had come on leaps and bounds from the start of the season. It was on point, and the buckets the team were making were outrageous. It was a huge win to end the season and with the team being so young and appearing to have transformed throughout the year, there’s no doubt the vast amount of potential and talent #TeamBU have going forward.

#TeamBU will no doubt be excited to face rivals Southampton Solent at this year’s Varsity day. With no points at stake the game is for pride alone and the team will be hoping to win the game, secure bragging rights and maintain their unbeaten title. The teams haven’t met in a while so there is no telling what kind of Solent side will turn out on the day. However, in the previous meeting between the two, #TeamBU were victorious and confidence is high in the camp that they can replicate this result when the two meet again. The plan in the event of a victory? An unflattering fancy dress theme and a night out! The only way varsity teams know how!

THE SEASON IN SUMMARY

COPING IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES

#TeamBU Women’s Basketball team is made up of a variety of age groups from 1st to final year. Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports around and it is great to see #TeamBU enjoying success in the women’s game.

The squad’s season got off to a flyer with a new look team travelling away to Cardiff and recording a highly impressive 71-37 victory. The league campaign was largely consistent with the team performing well and developing well as a unit.

The season has by no means been plain sailing for the team either. In a tough away game at Southampton, #TeamBU suffered a devastating injury to one of their key players to make things even harder for an already depleted match day squad. However, the team showed great character to continue battling to the end, showing real class despite unnecessary comments from the home side. The team’s character was once again on display in a local league match where bad traffic saw them play the entire of the 1st quarter with just 4 players instead of the usual 5. Despite this however, the team showed great fighting spirit to triumph by a single point. Definitely a proud moment.

However, in the cup, #TeamBU suffered a shock 1st round defeat to the University of Essex which was a bitter pill to swallow, especially as the team had gone unbeaten till that point in the season. This is no doubt a result they will be looking to avenge when the two teams meet in the Premier playoffs.

BU STUDENTS IN HISTORY MAKING, DORSET COUNTY WATER POLO TEAM Dorset won the south west inter-counties water polo tournament for the first time this millennium and it featured three Bournemouth university players, Matthew Helps, Jackson Mullins and Nathan Perren.

It was an early start when Dorset triumphed 11-2 over Somerset with BU’s Mullins and Perren scoring most of the goals. Next up was an extremely close game against Devon in which Helps scored a wonderful goal to level the score and then set up the winner in the dying seconds to win 8-7. Dorset then cruised past Cornwall 7-4 with all the BU players scoring yet again. However, Dorset then narrowly lost to Devon 6-7. This set up a winner takes all match with last year’s winners Wiltshire. The game started off tight and tense with the first half ending 3-3. Goals from all BU representatives with no reply took the score away from Wiltshire with Dorset coming out victors 8-3. Dorset winning the trophy was a great achievement for the BU boys and team

members stated how vital they were in winning the tournament. BU have recently set up a water polo club and this highlights the potential the university has in the pool. Hopefully this win encourages new participation and interest in the incredible sport. Looking ahead to this year’s competition, the BU Boat Club will be confident heading into it and keeping the momentum going heading into the summer months. Despite a well contested battle on the river last year, the BU Boat Club will have the psychological edge knowing they got over the line in 2016. It’s not just pride the crews will be battling it out for – the result gives either club a leader board score to see how they rank against other universities

FIRST YEARS PROVIDING A FRESH OUTLOOK

STRONG FINISH FOR THE WOMEN, FAST START FOR THE MEN

The year got off to a flyer as two athletes from the senior men trialled for GB and got through the first stage. This set the tone for the first half of the season as the club have continued to compete on a national level. Arguably the biggest turning point came at the start of the season back in December.

Although it being so early on, the boat club saw its largest fresher intake in years and therefore needed to quickly adapt. The turning point came after the first whole club meeting of the year at Bristol University Head Race. For the seniors, this was the first point in the year where they could match themselves against other University crews, whilst for the freshers it was their very first race in a Bournemouth boat. This race is always key for the club due to its position on the calendar, however with the number of new faces around it was especially poignant.

The Head Race season came to a climax for the women in impressive fashion, placing 8th out of 88 at the largest female only sporting event in the country. This was the best performance by a #TeamBU crew at the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race and is certainly something the crew can be immensely proud of. The men have also had a very positive start to their season placing well in all races undertaken so far.

MEN'S CRICKET Road to Varsity 2017

The team have had a long pre-season and at the time of print, are training on grass nets for the first time just weeks away from the opening game of the 2017 season against Portsmouth. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a tough pre-season putting in a lot of effort and will have extremely high expectations and will be backing themselves for a good finish in the South A Division. Due to the nature of the league, the season is brief and is over in the space of 5 weeks. Therefore, a fast start will be necessary otherwise promotion hopes will be over quickly. At the same time, a few strong results in a row early on will chuck #TeamBU straight amongst it. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no doubt the difficulty of getting a result in this one - #TeamSolent have a side packed full of talent boasting a host of county players. They also play their cricket in the National League, travelling across the country to play. For both teams, they will be eager to win so early on in the season but also in front of a large crowd being the showcase event of the day. If #TeamBU can pull this one off, it could be a massive moment!

The ladies will also have a tough test this year, #TeamSolent also play to a high standard. Their season is also short by nature so the significance of a strong performance at least will give the team some hope for the league. #TeamBU are realistic about their chances in this won after losing last year by a large amount. However, like the men they know how significant a win will be in the grand scheme of the whole day as #TeamSolent will be expecting to get a point in this one.

BU WEIGHTLIFTING TAKE 2ND AT ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIPS Olympic Weightlifting is on the rise with 55 medals won internationally for GB since 2014 and increasing popularity in gyms and Crossfit boxes nationally, this year’s championships registered record breaking entry’s with over 170 weightlifters qualifying. Lifters from the Bournemouth University club qualified in force with 8 lifters having a chance to clinch medals. The weekend started well, with an early start for Noorin Gulam coming back from injury to pick up a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category, swiftly followed by a Bronze for Head Coach Stuart Martin in the Men’s 105kg category. On Sunday, Nam Ahmadi picked up silver in the men’s 69kg after a difficult weight cut

of nearly 10% his bodyweight followed by another silver medal for Kathleen Spears in the Women’s 90kg Category. The last group of the weekend was the men’s 85kg where a fantastic performance from Lewis Ridett earned him the Gold medal, beating his opponents convincingly and laying down a strong marker ahead of his campaign to qualify for the commonwealth games in Gold Coast 2017. Head Coach, Stuart Martin said: “It’s great to see the team out there competing with the best in the country, over the last 3 years we have grown our numbers at national competitions every comp and it is testament to the environment the guys create for each other week in and week out that has got us to this point.”

MEN'S football 1st'S Road to Varsity 2017

Despite the Football teams ultimately poor season, ending in relegation, there is undisputed quality in the squad shown in the win over Swansea. #TeamSolent managed a 3-1 win in last year’s Varsity fixture so Bournemouth will be desperate to right that wrong, as well looking to establish some early dominance heading into next season as the two teams will battle it out in the Western 2A division. Always a fierce fixture, expect goals, drama and some big tackles – the men’s Football is not to be missed.

UPS AND DOWNS

TOP OF THE LEAGUE TOPPLED

The Football team have endured a tough season as they will be keen to finish on high by achieving success at this year’s Varsity. The squad will look to improve next campaign by bedding some new recruits into the set up as some squad members leave for placement and graduation.

#TeamBU have had a mix of results over the course of the season and after a brilliant 4-2 win against University of Southampton in their first match, the team would go on to lose 6 out of their next 8 games.

However, the real highlight of the season came about when the team squared up to face league leaders Swansea, known for their passing game and dominant displays of possession aided by their 3G home pitch in Wales.

Beating Southampton home and away, as well as earning a tough point in a well fought encounter against Cardiff Met represents some positive performances and results for the team to be proud of and build upon.

A solid defensive line lead by captain Mitchell Coombes held strong for the 90 minutes and despite a short lapse of concentration allowing Swansea to peg one goal back in their favour, the attacking threat of Bournemouth’s pacey forwards proved too much for the league leaders. Two goals from Clive Makoni and a brilliant free kick from Derek Hayford contributed to a strong team performance on the day as Bournemouth ran out 3-1 winners.

Despite a disappointing end to the season, the team should be immensely proud for what they have achieved. A victory at Varsity will offer the perfect chance to celebrate before much of the team goes their separate ways. They’ll be careful about their chances after last year’s 4-2 loss but being one of the showcase games of this year, Tape’s team will be looking to impress the large crowds. The visitors however will be full of confidence following promotion from the Western 2A Division so will also be looking to deal a psychological blow ahead of next year.

Unlike a lot of teams, the Women’s Football side only welcomed 3 first years so had the advantage of previous experience together. This paid dividends as the Ladies got off to a flyer with two wins on the spin, including their biggest score line of the season, a 7-2 thumping of Cardiff Met. The next few games were a case of two steps forward and one step back as the team struggled to put performances together.

The team headed into the year with the opportunity of a chance to go deep in the cup and a shot at the league title. It was in their hands, with only 3 games to go and at the top of the table but 4 other teams were all within a shot for a place in the promotion playoffs. A gutsy performance at home to Bristol 1st team setup a cup quarter-final away to Loughborough. The Ladies struggled and were narrowly beaten, leaving all hopes down to the league. With certain results happening elsewhere and a seemingly innocuous postponement of a game against Cardiff, the battle for the league built up to an enthralling climax.

The whole season came down to a home game against Cardiff in front of a strong crowd at Chapel Gate. The equation was simple – whoever won the game would win the league and go forward to the promotion playoffs for an opportunity to play in the Premier South division next season. With this likely to be the final BUCS game together for many of the team, a lot was on the line. After a nervy start from TeamBU, Cardiff took the lead with ten minutes played. Bournemouth then managed to get a hold on the game and create chances. Half time perhaps came at the wrong time for Chloe Tape’s team as they began to look the more dangerous team going forward. Immediately after the break the home team were back level and back in to the game. But Cardiff, only needing a draw to win the title defended well for the remainder of the game and denied BULFC the league.

Back-to-back wins in the league against Bristol and UWE reinvigorated the side, but progress was halted a little with a defeat at home to Exeter. In the first round of the cup, TeamBU hosted fellow South Coasters Brighton which will go down as one of the most enthralling games of the year. The home side fell behind early on but a late winner gave them an emphatic 4-3 win and epitomised cup football – just get your name in the hat for the next round. The year ended on and even further high with another large win on the road against Cardiff Met.

Both teams head into this year’s Varsity in great form and will feel confident facing the #Teamsolent sides who have both struggled this season finishing bottom and second bottom of the Western 1A league. A win would mean a lot to the teams in terms of bragging rights as they attempt to emulate the success of last year’s Varsity. The sesh is expected to extend into the early hours of Thursday morning following what should be a dominant display of silks and tekkers.

TRICKY BEGINNINGS

TURNING OF THE TIDE

The #TeamBU Men’s futsal 1st and 2nd team’s made up of an eclectic mix of first, second and third years, will be keen to produce results at this year’s Varsity. Despite tough starts to the season for both teams, the quality and effort of the players has gone a long way in ensuring the two teams have conclusively had successful campaigns and are still fighting in the two national cups.

Naturally, the start of the Futsal season always proves to be difficult as pretty much all of the new recruits are former football players who need time to learn and adapt to the differences between the two sports. The combination of this and the fact that the teams are competing at the highest university level led to not getting the results that were desired. In fact, the 1st team lost their first four games of the season and the 2nds won one out of their first four games.

The Christmas break proved to be a pivotal point

for the Futsal club as a much needed pep talk from the coaches meant that commitment and levels of desire were raised to ensure the team’s poor results could be improved upon. The 1sts have managed to pick it up winning their last 4 games in a row finishing 3 points away from the top and have qualified for the last 16 to try and make it to Super 8s. They beat the league champions, Cardiff, 10-5 in their last game and stay in the new Southern Premier format next season. The 2nds managed to end up 2nd in the Western 1A league, 1 point away from 1st after beating Southampton Solent 28-5 in their last game of the season after being promoted last season from Western 2A. They are also currently in the Quarter Finals of the Trophy aiming to go as far as possible in the cup #RoadToStGeorgesPark!

Both teams have had very solid seasons, with noticeable victories throughout the season. Bournemouth managed to win 21-4 against Anglia Ruskin in the cup. Solent managed to come away with a 16-2 victory against University of the West of England. Both teams come into this game after a loss in their final league games, and will be wanting to enc their seasons on a high. Overall, Bournemouth have had the better season, progressing further in the cup and finishing higher in the league. However even though both teams did pick up consecutive victories, their form as of late has not been great. If Bournemouth’s female futsal team do manage to win in their Varsity match against Solent, it will be a great victory, and whatever the result, it will be the start of a great rivalry between the two. Revenge is on the front of Bournemouth’s minds, which could affect them both positively and negatively, but whatever the result, it will be a great game. WOMENS FUTSAL

TURNING IT AROUND

GETTING REVENGE

The Women’s Futsal team has just formed this year, and they have had a fantastic season, coming second in the league and reaching the last 16 of the cup. The team is a mixture of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years and the range of ages has seemed to work well for them, ensuring that in their first season they were no pushovers.

The team started off badly, losing 5-1 to #TeamSolent in their first ever game but then managed to turn it around by going on a 5 game unbeaten streak. By doing this, it kept them in the running to win the league but sadly Gloucestershire managed to break their undefeated status in the final league game which was head-to-head. They narrowly lost 8-7 but their overall performance over the course of the season shows that next year they should be able to contest the league again, a great feat for a team just formed.

#TeamBU have never played #TeamSolent in a varsity match however as mentioned before they did lose their first ever game to their rivals 5-1. After seeing their results after the loss and looking at their cup run which had one of their best performances, the Varsity game is likely to be completely different more even. #TeamBU ended the league just ahead of their Varsity opponents on head to head, finishing 2nd and perhaps taking the mental edge ahead of the 10th of May.

The team will be hugely determined to put the disappointing 2016/17 campaign behind them with a large win in this year’s Varsity. Losing would be hard to take especially with Solent also facing relegation and following on from last year’s 3-0 victory. Having been promoted the season before, Team Solent haven’t managed a win thus far in the Western 2A Division so TeamBU will certainly fancy their chances in this one.

A HUGE LEARNING CURVE

SQUEAKY BUM TIME

The season got off to a solid start with a productive pre-season welcoming in a whole host of 1st years – over half of the squad. During pre-season, local rivals Portsmouth were dispatched in comfortable fashion giving the novel-looking side a much needed boost heading into their debut appearance in the Western 1A Division.

The season then took a turn for the worse with a number of poor results both home and away. It left the side out of the Hockey Trophy after suffering a 6-3 loss away to Oxford 1sts. Several defeats in the league left the team desperately fighting to survive in a tight scrap at the foot of the table. With two games left of the season following the Christmas break, TeamBU needed to pull something out the bag and find two monumental performances.

With both the Exeter 3rd team and Cardiff 2nd team also trying to avoid the bottom two, #TeamBU faced a crucial home game against Exeter. With the faintest chance of staying up, the boy’s pulled out arguably their best performance of the season and scraped a 3-2 win. This increased the morale of the team allowing them to train harder and become a tighter nit group. With a 1-month gap between the penultimate and ultimate game of the season, there was plenty of time to think about what was at stake against Plymouth 1sts. A win and results going their way elsewhere would offer a chance of avoiding the dreaded drop. But 2nd place Plymouth proved too much to handle and confirmed relegation. For everyone involved, the first taste of Western 1A Hockey was certainly a huge learning curve but the team should use this season as a stepping stone to become better players and come straight back up next season.

But soon the harsh reality of a brand new team playing in one of the top divisions of the country set in. The calibre of opposition seemed to not relent in the early stages of the year. In the very first league game, a tough trip to Exeter ended in a heavy defeat to the champions elect. The team then managed to get their first win on the board against fellow strugglers Cardiff at Chapel Gate.

As for the fixture against #TeamSolent, #TeamBU will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s outing which they won 2-1. Solent have had a difficult season themselves, currently 5th after 9 games with 4 wins and 5 defeats in division three. A win for them and a defeat for Exeter is necessary on the final day of the season if they are to stand any chance of finishing higher. As for #TeamBU, champagne is on the cards if they get the win over #TeamSolent for a second year running.

SEEING POSITVES FROM DEFEATS

Bournemouth University’s Hockey Women’s 1st team is largely made up of first year’s, perhaps justifying a season in which they have struggled to pick up the wins and find themselves being relegated to the second division as a result. Their form was perhaps understandable considering how important it is for a hockey team to be able to gel, and how difficult it can be for that to happen quickly among freshers.

Bournemouth’s season got off to a difficult start with a 7-0 defeat to Cardiff University Women’s 2nd, followed by an 8-1 loss to University of Plymouth Women’s 1st. Things weren’t so simple for their opposition when they faced University of Warwick Women’s 1st in a cup tie, but the latter came away with a narrow, surprise 3-2 victory.

Successive defeats to University of Gloucestershire Women’s 1st, University of Bristol Women’s 2nd, Cardiff University Women’s 2nd (Medics), and University of Plymouth Women’s 1st saw #TeamBU fall further down the league standings than they would have liked. Nevertheless, they believe that their performance against Cardiff – despite being a 2-0 defeat – demonstrated an improvement on the one prior in the season which they had lost 7-0.

There was a faint glimmer of hope when Bournemouth beat their follow relegation candidates, and the only team unable to register a win, University of South Wales Women 1st 3-0. But, despite what #TeamBU call a “turning point”; one in which “the team started to play together fluidly” and signalled “more determination, leading to higher attendance at training sessions”, they would not be able to scalp another win for the remainder of the season.

Once again, the other struggling side, University of South Wales Women 1st, represented an opportunity for Bournemouth to pick up a point in a 2-2 draw. But Bournemouth would go on to lose their final two games of the season – firstly 4-0 to University of Gloucestershire Women’s 1st, and secondly in a 6-1 defeat to University of Bristol Women’s 1st.

BU STUDENT ALICE KOZLOWSKI WINS BUCS TOURNAMENT IN ASTON On the 16th-18th October, 6 BU students went to compete in the BUCS Midlands Tournament at Little Aston Golf Club. The events started on the Sunday with the team arriving on Saturday. The guys found the course hard especially not being allowed to have a practice round on the Saturday due to club rules but the weather was great for golf. Kozlowski on the other hand had a great start and was 3 under par after 5 holes and maintained steady play up until the 11th. The last 7 holes were a struggle but she managed to finish 1 over par for the first round and lead the tournament by one shot. Monday morning saw Alice making 6 birdies during the round and finished at 1 over par again. With just one round remaining, she was 2 over par and leading the competition by 4 shots. The final day had strong winds and the temperature had dropped, which was quite different from the first two days meaning that

Kozlowski had a tough test to finish off her hard work from the previous two days. She started the last round with a double bogey on the 1st but bounced back immediately with an eagle on the 2nd. The conditions proved to be challenging on the back 9 leaving her 5 over for the day. Another competitor had a brilliant round of 1 under par with a birdie on the last which meant that Alice needed to get down in 2 shots from a 30ft putt. She played her first putt within 3 feet and confidently holed the next to edge the tournament by 1 shot. Here’s what she had to say about her impressive victory: “It was a very nerve-racking experience but I am so happy and proud to win representing Bournemouth University and SportBU” Three of the boys made the cut for the final day which was a huge positive for the travelling squad.

Despite a difficult season, they’ll get the chance to finish it on a high against Solent. After last year’s huge win, the team will be looking to take a much-needed confident boost from that and put it into action. They’re opponents have also struggled and have faced relegation to the Western 5A division, therefore #TeamBU will go in to the game as firm favourites. The team will be adopting a similar tactic to what we’ve seen before utilising both their first and second teams, allowing for a constant supply of fresh legs. With the result meaning nothing in terms of league standings, Somerville’s side are still hungry to take the spoils against their local rivals. With bragging rights at stake, the Netball team will be desperate to add a point to the #TeamBU total and be able to shout about it with drink in hand in the evening! NETBALL 1ST’S

TOUGH START FOR FRESHERS

GLIMMERS OF HOPE

After last year’s emphatic promotion to the Western 1A division, this season was always going to be a difficult one. With many of the squad moving on, the predominantly first year squad have had a tough time of it but will be in good stead for the years to come. However, there were still some excellent performances, most noticeably against Bath 2nd team in the cup. After losing to the south west team last year by a small margin, a gutsy performance against a strong Bath team gave the youthful side a deserved win.

The season started off with a tight loss away to Exeter as the newly formed team got to grips with playing each other for the first time. Wounds were quickly licked and the team bounced back emphatically against Cardiff Met winning a tight game back at home in Winchester. Progress was stunted as the side, led admirably by Amy Somerville, struggled to 5 defeats in 6 leading up to the Christmas break.

The team still maintained hope with a promising performance against eventually League Runners-Up Exeter. Despite still losing, signs of the team working together as a unit began to emerge. 2017 saw the team working harder to improve and learn from the mistakes made in the early part of the season. Although no more victories were recorded and the side ended up bottom of the table, the team will feel hard done by as many games were lost by the finest of margins. Such is the way of university sport, I wouldn’t bet against the Netball team bouncing straight back up to the Western 1A Division with mainly the same squad and their high work ethic!

But with the nature of university sport and the constant changes in squads, anything can happen but I’m sure #TeamBU will remain quietly confident heading into the game.

ATTEMPTING TO ACHIEVE THE UKNOWN

Following the opening win at Bath, the next few games were a struggle. Defeats at home to Exeter 5ths and Bath 3rds interspersed by a tight loss away to Royal Agricultural left the team desperate to change their fortunes as they found themselves near the bottom of the division. A much-needed win in the first round of the cup came away at UWE which appeared to have stopped the rot.

With the Christmas break in sight, the team remained in full focus and strung together three straight wins. A comfortable away performance against Winchester took the team into the last 8 of the cup followed by two important wins in the league to end the year. The festivities arguably came at the wrong time with the team starting to work together and play some fluid rugby.

With a solid run of results to end the year, the team albeit secured their Western 2A status for another season. All eyes were now on cup success and with an impressive win away against Bath 4ths in the quarter-finals, TeamBU reached the last 4 for the first time in 5 years. But what no Bournemouth University rugby team has done is reach the final of the Western Conference Cup. Up against a Cardiff 5th team two leagues below, the home side fancied their chances in front of a partisan crowd at Meyrick Park. But Cardiff themselves had only lost one game the whole season and were destined to become champions of their division. The game ended in a 14-15 defeat but despite the narrow loss, the cup semi-final performance against Cardiff was one of the most spirited efforts the team had produced all season, with the second half comeback epitomizing the players’ ability to compete against the top sides.

A mixed set of results left the team frustrated at times mixed with a lengthy injury list for games against the best sides in the league. But no doubt to make it to the semi-finals of the cup, a competition that the club hasn’t always performed well in will leave a degree of optimism going into this year’s Varsity.

#TeamSolent will be going into this one as underdogs but after revenge following last year’s 60-0 thrashing. But #TeamBU will be out to prove their promotion from the league both sides were in last season. Solent have had a mixed bag in the Western 2A Division earning a mid-table finish. After facing the likes of Hartpury, Cardiff and Swansea with internationals amongst their ranks, the fresh looking #TeamBU side should be more at ease against Solent. However, this is Varsity and with pure pride on the line, anything can happen!

ROCKY START

MIXED BAG TO END 2016

After a ground-breaking 2015/16 season, the Women’s rugby team faced an uphill battle from the get go this year. Plagued by injuries and low numbers, a fresh crop of first years came to the rescue. Add to the mix several second years taking up the game for the very first time, the first few weeks of the season was all about getting to know each other and learning the rules of the game. The youthful side were dealt with a huge blow at the start of the season when Vice Captain Shannon Tilley tore her ACL. With no actual kicker in the side, training sessions comprised of finding and training a replacement. In stepped Elle Carlisle, a complete natural and provided the side with a much-needed boost.

After already overcoming such difficulties, the season finally got under the way in Cardiff. Making their debut in the Western 1A Division, the first few games were a real struggle. Suffering a vast lost at home to eventual League Champions Hartpury College, everyone really pulled together and built on the skills learned in practice. In arguably the side’s best performance of the season, the team bounced back superbly with a 20-0 win against the University of South Wales. Up against a team with strength in the forwards, #TeamBU had to adapt their playing style showing real grit and determination and earning their first victory of the season.

After the impressive performance against the Welsh side, #TeamBU continued to improve and won their next two games. Two tough fixtures followed, both ending in defeat leaving the Women’s just above the relegation zone heading into the Christmas break. Despite promising performances and real progress, the New Year didn’t bring new fortune. However, the team have just about done enough to remain in the division and can certainly be proud of that achievement. A season of transition with the likes of Katy Walker, Daisy Lee and Alice Hagan scoring some invaluable tries will no doubt hold the team in good stead for next year.

#TeamSolent also head into this one on the back of a promotion winning season with an impressive 9 wins from 10. They will play in the Western 2A Division next year – the league #TeamBU just won promotion from. The home side will be looking to emulate last year’s convincing 5-0 win over Solent. Current skipper Ian Morris will be looking to have a greater involvement in this year’s proceedings having missed out in 2016 due to a wrist injury. In fact, he missed watching most of the match also fetching a pint at the bar, such was the pace of the victory.Success this year though would mean a lot for the Squash team. Several squad members will be taking on placements or graduating this year so will be looking to end on a high note. The team will no doubt be confident after the bar-setting season they’ve had and will intend to continue their winning ways. However, make no mistake the visitors will be back for revenge and not be willing to lose either – mark my words, this could be one of the games of the day! SQUASH TEAM

FLYING OUT THE BLOCKS

The Squash team have been one of the stand out performers for #TeamBU this year, winning the league and making it to the semi-final of the Conference Cup. The team has gone from strength to strength helped by a diverse mixture of ages. This has no doubt been the key to their success with the more experienced players in the group filtering their knowledge down – the Freshers have certainly given the old dogs a run for their money!

The team, aided by newly appointed captain Ian Morris, started on a positive note nicking a 3-2 away victory against Exeter 2’s. Back-to-back defeats to eventual 2nd place Bath 2’s did not deter Morris’ men – five big victories from the next five left them going into 2017 on a high at the top of the table. The new year didn’t bring too much change. In fact, it was very much business as usual with three wins and a walk over in the next four. This left the team in a strong position heading into the final stages of the season having already made a decent cup run and the league title in sight. Battling it out neck and neck with Bath 2nd team with only a few games to go spurred the team on to the next level.

It all came down to the penultimate game of the season with a journey across the south coast to Plymouth – a side beaten comfortably 4-1 earlier on in the season. But with Bath 2nd team level on points and promotion to the Western 1A Division at stake, the stage was set for a nerve-jangling encounter. The team arguably pulled out one of their best performances of the season and held it together for a 3-2 win and sparked jubilant scenes!

But #TeamSolent have had a strong season, just missing promotion from the Western 2A division with a return of 6 wins from 7. However, #TeamBU will be determined to put a difficult season behind them and battle through to become Varsity champions for the 2nd year running.

MUCH NEEDED BOOST TO END 2016

The Men’s Table Tennis first team have had tough season but just managed to battle through to retain their place in the Western 1A Division. Their campaign got off to a great start with a big result against relegation rivals Bath just edging it 9-8. But a tough run of fixtures leading up to the festive break left the team in a dangerous position lingering around the relegation zone.

The side, with a whole mix of ages (1828!), were given some rest bite before Christmas with Cardiff 2nds unable to field a team then a thumping of Essex University in the cup to end the first half of the season as they started it. However, improvements were going to be needed to secure their Western 1A Division status for another year.

The new year saw a league visit to Cardiff immediately followed by a return leg in the cup back on the south coast. Unfortunately, both games ended in defeat with a minor cup run over and a possibility of relegation. However, results went their way elsewhere and a hearty win against league champions Exeter confirmed safety. in the league. But no doubt to make it to the semi-finals of the cup, a competition that the club hasn’t always performed well in will leave a degree of optimism going into this year’s Varsity.

#TeamBU will head into this contest full of confidence having only suffered two defeats over the course of the season. Not to mention that they ran out comfortable 5-0 winners over #TeamSolent last year. Chloe won her first singles match 3-0 and then took on their number one player, also sealing a 3-0 win to secure victory in the tie. Although the result means nothing in terms of context in the league, a victory over their main rivals would mean that the ladies can walk away with big smiles on their faces, knowing that they have done BU proud. They plan to celebrate if they win by having a pint in the car park and watching other sports!

AN EMPHATIC START

EXETER END BOURNEMOUTH’S WINNING RUN

A RETURN TO WINNING WAYS, BUT DISAPPOINTMENT IN THE CUP

Bournemouth University Women’s 1st Team, consisting of Captain Chloe Thomas, second year student Min-Chen and first year student Charleigh Kirby, made the perfect start to their season, romping through their opening four matches. The women thrashed Sussex and Cardiff 2nd team 5-0, saw off Bath 4-1 and then defeated the Cardiff 1st team 5-0.

On November 16th 2016 the team travelled to face title rivals Exeter, but they were without their captain Chloe due to exams. Despite Charleigh’s experience and a huge effort from the team their rivals were just too good on the day, running out comfortable 4-1 winners. Despite finishing on the same points (21) and having superior game difference, (26-15) that win for Exeter was all that mattered as the league is decided on head to head. Although there were still games to be played, with both sides only losing one match each that loss was pivotal.

In the second half of the season the ladies bounced back with excellent 5-0 wins over Southampton University, Southampton Solent and the University of South Wales. However, when they met South Wales again in the Trophy Cup they came up short. It was a close match and it all came down to the deciding doubles match after two victories for each university in the singles. Bournemouth battled back from 2-0 down to force a fifth and deciding set, but despite leading 8-6 they produced some untimely unforced errors which cost them the match.

Their first big challenge came against Aberystwyth, a team which featured a Welsh International Player. Min-Chen played exceptionally under pressure to take the deciding match, completing a 3-2 victory, setting up a top of the table clash with Exeter.

TeamBU managed to see off the final half an hour with not to many issues, helped by substitutes Adetiba and Bodley. In the dying embers of the game, a Swansea shot hit the post but it was not enough to deny TeamBU a huge win.

The 2nds will be determined to take away the spoils and prove how far they’ve come whilst the 1st’s will be looking to add to their successful season in a Varsity debut for Volleyball!

The 1st team successfully battled on all fronts this year, including a respectable defence of their Premier South Division title finishing 3rd. An early loss to eventual champions Essex was quickly followed by four successive victories against opposition that surrounded them in the table. This left the side near the top of the table again but the sole defeat to Essex turned out to be costly, as they appeared to be running away with the title.

A few losses around the festive break all but confirmed that their Premier South crown was going elsewhere but the team still had chances in the cup competition. After qualifying through the Super 8s, the team went through to the Semi Final’s of the cup away at Sheffield Hallam. A narrow loss away from home meant their campaign came to an end but following a memorable 2015/16 season, a cup run and a third place finish in the league is definitely not to be belittled.

The team also pretty much started from afresh with the majority of players in the squad just starting to play volleyball. The team had a whole variety of ages and a mixture of postgraduate and undergraduate students, which proved difficult playing against teams in the division with a lot more experience than them. The team found it difficult to get off the mark in the Western 1A but continued to work hard.

Plagued by injuries and feeling the need for a change, the second half of the year also proved to be difficult. However, the team showed real signs of development and unity and came together. In the final game of the season, a long trip up to Edinburgh in the playoffs provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the improvements made. The side had no coach, and despite losing 3-0, it was a great way to end the season. Both victories against Sussex meant the ladies drew level on points with them but stayed up due to head to head.

TRAMPOLINING CHAMPIONSHIPS Coventry hosted the 2016 English Trampolining Championships over the weekend of the 19th and 20th of November, here is competitor Ed Weedon’s account on the event:

Warm ups went well and I was feeling nervous but confident with my routines. My initial routine started well however the timing was off and I lost my balance on the last move causing me to land on the end deck. Up next was the voluntary routine, this went well and I managed to complete all 10 moves. The final meant having to repeat the voluntary routine and was optimistic in myself. The first 5 moves of the voluntary were great, high, tidy and powerful, then sadly move 6 just got away from me putting me on the end deck. One mistake cost me my position but this is all about performance and striving for perfection. Here’s my overall thoughts about the day: “Stressful, lots of ups and downs, and mistakes but a positive attitude at the end of the day knowing that this is the

experience I need and that it has motivated me to go back to training and train harder than ever before” Next up was the Gold Synchro event. After the first synchro set routine myself and Lewis were looking strong and had a huge chance for a gold medal. The voluntary routine however saw myself make a large error by doing the wrong move at number 9 meaning we were only marked out of 8 moves. We still however placed 2nd. Finally, was the Silver Team event. My set routine went well receiving high 8’s for it. The voluntary routine was successful with all 10 moves being completed. It was not the tidiest however it had a high enough tariff to put myself and my team in a strong position.

HIGH HOPES FOR THE FUTURE

LOOKING OVER THEIR SEASON

The Athletics team is currently a team which is in progress, and at the moment their main goals are to build a good squad with a lot of depth. Currently they have a mix of ages, ranging from people in first year to an Athlete who is doing a masters.

The Athletics team is currently one which focuses mainly on indoor Athletics, but looks towards the Outdoor Season with high hopes. Their aims are to have more athletes competing at the outdoor event, which they feel will be a great achievement for sport at Bournemouth. Fitness events are the ones in which they feel like they could excel at when they make the big move to outdoors events.

For #TeamBU Athletics, the Sheffield BUCS competition was their highlight of the season. It was the event which they identified what they would improve on for the outdoor championships and they also had a lot of support. As the outdoor season hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t started yet it is hard to predict how it will go. In comparison to recent years, #TeamBU have a lot of people to compete at BUCS.

CONTINUED LEAGUE FORM AND INROADS IN THE CUP

The golf team got off to a solid start with some consistent results winning their first three games in the Premier South Division. In the run up to Christmas, the team only lost once narrowly to Exeter but bounced back straight away against the University of Surrey away at Slivermere Golf Club. Further large victories against Buckinghamshire New and Bath left the side going in to the festive break near the top of the league.

The side, with a mixture of first, second and third years didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t eat to many pigs in blankets over Christmas and continued where they left off straight away in South Wales with a 4-2 win. Up next was a crucial top of the table clash against Exeter away from home. The game was closely contested and both teams shared the spoils. In terms of the league, the game ended up being the decider with both teams going on to win their remaining fixtures. Exeter just pipped it having beaten #TeamBU back in November narrowly and going unbeaten all season. Nevertheless, Bournemouthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success on the course continued in the cup with victories against UCLAN and then a huge win against Northern League champions Durham, one of the favourites to win in the competition.

At the time of print, the side are preparing for a huge clash against the University of Stirling up in Scotland on the 25th of April. Victory will mean a place in the Championship Final for the first time in 5 years for #TeamBU. The side will be desperate to get through to the final as golf is not part of Varsity. They will hope to extend their season beyond the 10th of May where they will be in support of the rest of #TeamBU.

THE SEASON IN SUMMARY

THE FUTURE?

The men’s Lacrosse team at BU is predominantly made up of first year students, many of whom have never played the sport. The team have enjoyed a mixed bag this season with some fantastic performances but a few slip ups have hindered the quest for major honours. However, the team’s commitment and togetherness stands them in good stead for the coming season, and with plenty more fresher’s sure to join the set up in 2017/18- exciting times are ahead for #TeamBU.

With high expectations, ahead of the seasons kick off, #TeamBU were looking to push for the league title. However, despite their best efforts, the squad could only muster a 3rd place finish with 6 wins and 4 defeats across the campaign to finish on 18 points. The squad enjoyed some big scalps, noticeably a 7-1 victory against rivals Marjons and only the second ‘lock out’ in BULC history in a storming 15-0 win against USW.

With no varsity match for the squad this year, focuses will be on watching the rest of #TeamBU and cheering them on. Focus will then turn to the 2017/18 campaign and pushing for league success.

Despite some impressive results however, the team suffered some narrow defeats including a devastating 9-8 defeat to Gloucestershire. Defeat to Surrey in the cup set the team on a 3-match losing run which extinguished any hopes of title success but the squads attitude could not be faulted throughout the campaign with fantastic togetherness and team spirit shown even in the face of defeat.

The team also enjoyed cup success this season, taking home silver to add to their fruitful league campaign. With many of the players only being introduced to the sport this season, there is hope that the squad can build on this success next season.

The team have enjoyed success both home and away with a 30-0 home win vs UWE at the end of February a stand out result. The squad have also had to dig deep across the season with perhaps the most impressive result coming in mid-February, defeating rivals Plymouth 15-6 to avenge the defeat to the same opposition earlier in the campaign. This result made even more impressive given that this was an away match and a cup quarter final!

STRONG START AT THE BUCS SHORT COURSE NATIONALS

LUCY PEARCE SHINES IN LONG COURSE NATIONALS

STRIVING TO ACHIEVE MORE NEXT SEASON

Of the 16 swimmers competing at the Short Course Nationals, George Gibson performed to a very high standard over the course of the weekend, reaching the final of the 50m Breaststroke. It is no surprise that the team named him their standout swimmer of the year, after he also took home a collection of medals at the Dorset Counties Championships.

Looking back at the season, the big turning point came in February for the team thanks to Lucy Pearce. She finished 11th in the 200 Individual Medley, a feat which has not been achieved by a Bournemouth University student for many years.

Following successful recruitment ahead of this season, taking in their largest intake of 1st year students as well as attracting 2nd and 3rd year students, the team have high hopes next year. The team praised swimmers Matt Ginn and Sam Gray for their commitment and improved performances at competitions. They may not be competing in the Varsity games but watch this space in 2017 for the #TeamBU swimming team!

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

WAKE-UP CALL, FOLLOWED BY RESURGENCE

STRONG PERFORMANCES MARRED BY POOR RESULTS

It’s been a season of mixed results for the #TeamBU Ultimate Frisbee team, who have finished 4th following 2 wins and 3 defeats in the league. The departure of many experienced players at the end of last season, combined with an influx of fresh faces from first years, culminated in a difficult start to their campaign. Nevertheless, as the season moved forward the squad were able to scalp some positive results against what was, on paper at least, tougher opposition.

The beginning of the season made the BU newcomers aware that their opponents weren’t going to make it easy for them, with University of Southampton Mens 1st beating them comfortably 15-4 on the opening day.

Bournemouth’s following game, a narrow 9-8 defeat away to University of Exeter Mens 2nd, was cited by the former as a turning point in performances for the rest of the season, despite the result. There’s reason to believe that claim, as the very next week the two sides met once again in the Western Conference Cup, this time with #TeamBU coming out on top in another tight game that ended 11-8 to the team from the South Coast.

Nevertheless, #TeamBU were quick to respond with two successive, convincing wins; first a 15-4 victory over University of Plymouth Mens 2nd, followed one week later by dispatching University of Southampton Mens 2nd team in an 11-3 win.

But that’s where Bournemouth’s winning ways would come to an end, as the two defeats that followed – firstly losing 13-10 to University of Plymouth Mens 1st, and secondly suffering a 15-7 cup defeat away to Cardiff University Mens 1st - marked an inconsistent season that could have been worse but could have been better. Despite this, #teambu believe that they put their strongest performance in in the defeat against Plymouth, stating that the former showed “pure grit and determination” and were unfortunate not to get the result.
