WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? The SUBU Leadership Elections offer a range of different roles within the Students’ Union to students who want to become more involved and become leaders in their chosen area. As well as the elected positions detailed in this guide, there are a number of appointed positions available which are listed on our website at www.subu.org.uk/leadership

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE All Part Time Executive Officers (PTOs) are members of the Executive Committee, the key decision making body of SUBU. In partnership with the full-time Sabbatical Officers, the Exec Committee lead decisions about the future of SUBU, continuing with their studies at the same time as volunteering with SUBU. Executive Officers are therefore essentially non-sabbatical activists whom SUBU supports with resources, professional expertise and staff time; they help make general or specific changes for the students that they represent and more broadly serve directing SUBU and responding to University plans.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE If elected, you will be expected to pro-actively champion the rights and needs of SUBU members. You will help lead the development and oversight of SUBU’s work and support Full-Time Union Officers and Students’ Union staff deliver relevant campaigns and policies. You will talk to students electronically and face-to-face and share their concerns and ideas with the relevant groups or to sign-post them to the relevant people. You will be expected to be professional in fulfilling your elected role and duties, staying within the policy and procedures of the Students’ Union at all times when representing students or the Students’ Union. This is a part time unpaid position, but Executive Officers are expected to attend Exec Committee meetings for one hour every two weeks; beyond this, you are free to choose how much time you dedicate to the position.

RAISING AND GIVING (RAG) RAG stands for Raising and Giving and is the fundraising arm of the Students’ Union.

RAG organise loads of cool events throughout the year from volunteering trips overseas, to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and charity Skydives. If you want to lead a team of passionate student leaders as RAG Chair for 2018/19, then this position could be for you.

RAG CHAIR The RAG Chair is elected part-time officer role and is responsible for overseeing and leading the RAG Leadership Team. You are responsible for chairing all RAG Leadership Team meetings. You will receive training to help you achieve all of this, as well as an amazing team and support network made up of both staff and student volunteers.

MENTAL HEALTH ZONE The SUBU Mental Health Zone is made up of students who are passionate and engaged in promoting positive wellbeing and mental health for students whilst studying at BU. The Mental Health Zone Committee is made up of the Chair, Vice-Chair, Communications Officer, Lansdowne Officer and Events Officer. Together the Mental Health Zone will be responsible for improving the student experience, promoting positive mental wellbeing and challenging mental health stigma by running campaigns, events and managing peer training.

MENTAL HEALTH ZONE CHAIR The Mental Health Zone Chair is an elected part-time officer role and is the chair of the Mental Health Zone. You will be responsible for leading the Mental Health Zone and supporting the project leaders, alongside four other officers. You are responsible for chairing all of the Zone meetings. You will work with VP Welfare & Equal Opportunities to interview and appoint the four Mental Health Zone Officers. You need to be understanding of mental health issues, how they affect students and be passionate about improving the student experience. We are looking for a passionate and dedicated student who wants to create change for BU students, and challenge mental health stigma. You are not expected to be a mental health professional.

SUBU VOLUNTEERING Community Volunteering is made up of on-campus and off-campus projects that benefit both BU and the local community. These can vary from 5 minute volunteering to running a long term project. Community Volunteering is where you are expected to dedicate your time to people in charities and organisations, for example volunteering with patients with Alzheimer’s, litter picking on the beach, or conservation work in the environment. If you want to help run these great events and have something great on your CV, then this position could be for you.

VOLUNTEERING CHAIR The Community Volunteering Chair is expected to host the SUBU Volunteering Fair (October), the SUBU Refreshers’ Fair volunteering area (February) and national Student Volunteer Week (February). You are also expected to organise and run on campus volunteering and community campaigns. As Chair, you should be organised, prepared to put the time in and passionate about volunteering and the local community. You will be responsible for chairing leadership team meetings, and you will receive training and support from the student volunteers and staff in the SUBU Community team.

GREEN TASKFORCE The SUBU Green Taskforce is made up of students who are passionate and engaged in making a change to the sustainability and the green impact the Students’ Union and BU have on the wider community.

You will have an ethos for wanting to encourage all BU students to question every aspect of their life, as to how they can live it in a more sustainable way, during their time at BU and in the future.

GREEN TASKFORCE CHAIR You will be expected to attend the NUS Student Sustainability Summit (usually at the beginning of November), and are expected to organise and run Go Green Week and other campaigns such as Fairtrade Fortnight. The Chair needs to attend all Leadership team meetings, so a flexible and adaptive person is a must. As Chair, you will also be expected to attend as many events and campaigns as possible, that have been organised by your leadership team.

SENIOR REP ELECTIONS If you have been a Student Rep before, and want to build on your experience and represent student feedback at a higher level within BU, then nominate yourself to be a Senior Rep.

REPS

To be a Senior Rep, you must have been a Student Rep in the previous academic year. There are 2-3 Senior Reps per department, one of those being Postgrad if applicable to the department.

BECOMING A SENIOR REP To become a Senior Rep, you will be elected by students in your faculty. Once elected, your key responsibilities will include being a point of contact for all Student Reps in your Department and coordinating feedback from those Reps. You will also be expected to help SUBU supporting Reps and ensuring they are engaged with the feedback process. You will be expected to attend the Senior Rep Forum to pass on your feedback and where appropriate, work with the Union Officer team to enact on changes as a result of this feedback. You will receive support and leadership training, and will be expected to chair the Student Experience Forums where appropriate as well as attend Faculty Education and Student Experience Committee (FESEC)
