SO, WHO ELSE IS ON THE LINE UP? David Rodigan
Give me some signal! Everyone’s favourite Reggae regulator, Sir David Rodigan will be packing his signature exclusive dub plates, rounding up his heavyweight dance-hall team and bringing his world famous DJ set to Summer Ball 2018. For 30 years, David has been the man for heavy bass, classic ska, rock steady and of course, reggae. The key to his success has been an unsinkable passion for reggae music, which first took a hold of him as a schoolboy when he heard ska music in the early ’60s.
FRICTION
Friction is part of the coveted D&B hall of fame and is known for his masterful ability behind the decks. Fans of bass will know him from his radio show on BBC Radio 1 or for tracks like Freak and Mad In The Jungle. If Drum and Bass is your kind of thing, make sure you’re at the front and ready to party.
jaguar Skills
The anonymous DJ will be heading to Bournemouth for this year’s Summer Ball. A well established name in the festival and club circuit, ravers love Jaguar Skill’s flawless mix of drum and bass, hip hop and everything in between. The multi-genre mixing DJ has previously worked with Urban Outfitters, Carling, Renault and BBC Radio 1. He also boasts making one of the most downloaded hip-hop mixtapes of all time.
Artwork
Bringing us a 4 hour set, Artwork, known as one third of Magnetic Man, is a pioneer of all this dubstep and bass. He’s been producing since the 90s and with Skream
and Benga, the trio joined forces to form Magnetic Man… But Artwork on his own is a completely new clubbing experience. And even so, he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He has had an undeniable impact on the electronic scene in London and is set to make a splash at this year’s Summer Ball.
Oh My God! It’s The Church
Oh My God! It’s The Church’ is a raucous, Deep South Pentecostal Church party brimming with the best Soul, Motown and Disco tunes. Fronted by the insane pastor ‘Michael Alabama Jackson’ the service leads the audience through wild sermons of religious ecstasy. Since its premiere in May 2013, the show has moved from the fringe tents onto the main music stages at numerous festivals including Glastonbury, The Secret Garden Party, Beautiful Days Festival and Bestival.
young t & bugsey
The big grime artists hitting Bournemouth this year will be the creators of hits like Gangland and No Mickey Mouse Ting. This Stormzy-approved Nottingham duo made it big when they produced made Gangland in one week, shot the music video a week later, and saw it gain over half a million views on YouTube. They’re putting Northern sounds on the map and showing that the grime and rap scenes aren’t just in London. also in attendance: kc lights, Felix Dickinson, Our Girl, Leeches, Patrick Nazemi, petrie & many, many more check the line up poster for the full details
learn more about this year’s stages Now that we know the line up, here is what to expect from all the different stages this year. Bestival Tent After moving from the Isle of Wight to Dorset only last year, The Bestival is a fairly new addition to the BU Summerball line up. Last year it boasted an abundance of vibrant colours in correlation with the theme of the festivals theme that year. Last year it was a nice spot to kick back with a beer and sit down for a minute before going back to the mania that the rest of the festival presents. It’s also an ideal spot to get that all important Instagram with its great décor. But now, it’s set to be something even bigger. Suddenly Funk The Suddenly Funk tent promises non stop old school classics throughout the day and way into the evening, probably one of the best decorated tents of them all, there isn’t a minute it isn’t rammed all the way back to the door. In previous years it has also turned into a silent disco come nightfall, a great way to end your 2018 summerball. Whether you’re into House, Funk or just want to dance this tent holds no judgement. The tent will also host DJs from 909 and Bad Decisions, new residents at The Old Fire Station this year. For fans of: House, Funk, Soul, Indie, Rock. We Broke Free The We Broke Free tent is where to go if you’re looking for live music. In the past it has held host to some now massive acts
including the likes of The Amazons, Black Honey and VANT. The tent showcases talent from across the UK as well as local up and coming bands. It is small and intimate, a great way to see some names before they break into the industry. For fans of: Indie, Rock, live music. Applebum The Applebum team pull out all the stops to ensure their loyal fan base find it hard to leave. With an indoor tent, a massive sound system and an even bigger light show, their stage is always one of the most popular year in and year out. But prepare to lose a few items of clothing in there whether it be by the mosh pits or the intense heat caused by a couple thousand steaming students jumping up and down to their favourite hip hop tracks. Featuring tracks from the likes of Drake, ASAP, J Cole, Eminem etc. For fans of: Hip Hop, Old School RnB Main tent The main tent and the foreverland tent, unsurprisingly to you I’m sure.. hosts the biggest names of the Summerball every year. With the Rudimental, Chase and Status, DJ Fresh and Stormzy all gracing its stage in previous years. Although it tends to kick off later on in the day in comparison to the other stages, make sure you remember to note where it is. With a mix of live sets and DJs, this is where you get your moneys worth for your ticket. Just make sure you’ve not had so much by the time the headliner comes on that you forget their set entirely! For fans of: All things good.
Summer Ball is undeniably one of the biggest student events in Bournemouth. Students flock to grab tickets, anxiously awaiting the line-up to see who will be entertaining them for a day of partying in the sun (fingers crossed, anyway), and preparing the wackiest, wildest costumes for one final bash before heading home for summer, or for good. Just last year, SUBU had to release 500 extra tickets due to the high demand. 2017’s event was the biggest and best that Bournemouth has ever held, with big names like Chase and Status gracing our stages, as well as My Nu Leng and Black Honey. It was also the beginning of a beautiful collaboration between Bestival and Bournemouth University, one that is expanding in 2018 as Bestival will be hosting its very own stage. They’ve set the bar high. And historically, the ball has always had notoriously high standards.
the history of summer ball Words & DESIGN: Lily Coleman
2016 was just as good of a year as the line-up boasted student-loved names like DJ Fresh, MNEK, 99 Souls, Chip and Fatman Scoop to name a few. With these names in tow, and a variety of food stalls, free funfair rides, and more… There’s something for everyone at Summer Ball and that’s what makes it such a popular event. It not only brings some of the acts that students are dying to see. But it also helps boost the careers of up-and-coming artists, and boosting their career to new heights. Think back to 2013 and Stormzy was in attendance but he certainly wasn’t headlining. Now look at him, a pioneer of Grime with Brit, GQ and MTV awards all under his belt. Big names like Rudimental, Feeder and Netsky have also visited us in 2013 and 2012 respectively. And it’s not many places that you can find people dressed as disney characters, political figures and mythical creatures all in one venue. The whole day is bursting with creativity and fun. And there’s always a surprise on offer, if you look hard enough. Summer Ball truly is a special event. Not just for us third years, celebrating our last few moments in Bournemouth before we must have the harsh realities of adulthood and the ‘real world’. Not just for the first and second years who are celebrating the end of exams, assignments and preparing for their summers away from their university friends. But also for the acts that hope to please us, who provide us with hours of entertainment, and who will ultimately go on to the limelight.
Summer Ball Outfit DOs and DON’Ts Words: tiina karppi Design: Lily Coleman
Summer Ball may still be over a month away, but it’s never too early to start planning your outfit! Whether you want to rock a solo look or do something cool with your friend group, there are a few things to keep in mind. Check out our guide on how to find the perfect outfit and also how to avoid accidentally wearing something inappropriate.
What to Wear? Don’t know where to start? Well, it’s time to get creative! While there is nothing bad about dressing up as a lifeguard or a fairy, you can really think outside the box here and make your wildest fancy dress fantasies come true – draw inspiration anywhere from films to your favourite drinks (yes, you can totally dress up as a bottle of Tequila). Purchase your fancy dress outfit at least a week advance so you have time to adjust if something unexpected happens. Make sure the clothes and shoes you wear are comfortable enough to party all night outdoors, and perhaps pack a jumper with you for the journey home. There is a cloakroom (£1 an item) and all stages are under cover in case it rains, however it’s always good to be prepared. This works the other way too: if the weather is
looking super sunny, make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen and don’t forget your sunglasses.
What Not To Wear? The ground is soft, so girls, leave your heels at home. Also think twice what to bring with you if you’re planning on showing up as Harley Quinn or Kylo Ren – imitation weapons such as guns, water pistols, spears, bats, clubs or equivalent are an absolute no-no. In addition, make sure to stay culturally respectful – if you find yourself questioning whether your planned costume is funny or offensive, it’s probably better to come up with a whole new look. You may also want to think twice about bringing loads of props that you’ll probably just end up losing. It is also important to realise the party tents will be packed, so massive angel wings that may poke someone’s eye out or get too heavy throughout the night probably aren’t the smartest choice. Summer Ball is all about celebrating the end of this uni year and making memories with your friends that will last a lifetime. Let’s make the Ball the best it’s ever been by collectively respecting the rules and obviously… dressing up in something epic!

Fortnite Battle Royale from Epic Games has blown up within the gaming world. The multiplayer shooting game was released last year and is now one of the biggest online games out there. With over 40 million players worldwide, you have probably already heard of it. And now you will be able to play Fortnite Battle Royale for free. But is this move to becoming free just Epic shooting itself in the foot? With everything becoming free; free music, free news, free gaming - who’s paying for it? Before Spotify and Youtube, you would’ve had to buy all of your music in a physical product. Now, with streaming sites such as Spotify or Youtube, the concept of music ownership has undoubtably changed. The broader mentality being one of ‘Why would I buy it when I could just stream it?’ Even with subscription-based streaming, the way artists are paid for their music is not what it was. As they aren’t paid as much per stream as per download purchase, their revenue models are steered more towards artists capitalising on live performances and merchandise. However, streaming has created a wider audience for artists. Aguiar and Waldfogel’s paper entitled “Streaming Reaches Flood Stage: Does Spotify Stimulate or Depress Music Sales.”, states that recent growth in streaming evens out what is lost in sales. Their estimates suggest that around 137 streams displace one track sale.
Although there are arguments for both sides of the streaming argument - whether it has helped or hindered the music industry as a whole - artists still rely on their supporters to invest in their music. So although you may get the music for free, to keep your favourite bands and singers going, you’ll have to cough up the cash somewhere. In the news industry, we also aim to get all of our updates without the cost of subscriptions or newspapers. But without those costs, news outlets rely on advertising to keep their revenue up. Yet it is still not enough. Even The Guardian, who has stated in a pop up on their website that the revenue they are getting from advertising is falling and they ‘Increasingly need [their] readers to fund [them]’. There has been significant change in the news media with journalists competing with social media platforms to report news - platforms such as Facebook and Twitter facilitating the discovery of free news. The biggest affect on news consumers by getting all their news this way is what they actually consume. The great thing about traditional outlets is that you can pretty much assume that what you are reading is researched and fact checked. Social media is one of the biggest factors behind the spread of ‘fake news’. Fake news stories like ‘Pope endorses

Trump as President’ that exploded all over social media are widely recognised and largely believed. So in the pursuit of free news, be careful what you believe. Despite the ‘free mentality’ having detrimental effects on other industries, gaming is different - especially when it comes to Fortnite. Fortnite Battle Royale was launched freeto-play in September 2017, following it’s early release (where consumers can pay for a game in various development cycles - as a way for developers to make money and improve the game before its release). Releasing free-to-play guarantees the opportunity to find an audience first and worry about convincing users to hand over their money second. On top of which, Epic Games already had people who were invested in the gaming brand.
As stated in a Polygon article by Charlie Hall “Epic Games makes the Unreal Engine, one of the more powerful and versatile game engines in the world. That’s the foundation for Fortnite. But they very clearly built Fortnite with the same kind of rigor that went into Unreal. Not only are the engine and the game intertwined, but they are each enhanced by that closeness. Which is to say, it’s not just a game. It’s a platform.” So it’s looking like Epic knows what they’re doing, many saying that Fortnite is just the start. But although this game is curving the ‘free mentality’ hit, many industries are having to adapt to it. Finding other ways to bring in revenue. ‘The Future is Free’… Perhaps not.

A tribute to stephen hawking On the 14th of March, we lost one of the greatest scientists of our time, renowned not only for his work but for his character too. Most of you might know him as the man who made a mockery of his motor neurone disease, or the scientist with the robot voice. But are you aware of what he achieved? Throughout his life, Stephen Hawking contributed an enormous amount to our understanding of the universe, but arguably his two greatest scientific achievements were the discovery of Hawking radiation and one of the first attempts at creating a ‘theory of everything’. Hawking radiation is a theory involving very complex quantum physics, but long story short, Stephen came up with the idea that black holes can leak matter and this causes them to eventually fade to nothing. This contradicted the popular belief at the time that nothing could escape a black hole, and essentially suggests that black holes are not black at all because if matter can escape them, then so can light.
no knowledge on the subject could understand. The book sold ten million copies in 20 years and was on the Sunday Times bestseller list for over five years. This book significantly helped bridge the gap between the everyday person and the universe. A brilliant mind, a determined attitude and a great sense of humour is not a very common combination, but Stephen had it. He once said: “Life would be tragic if it weren’t funny,” and so he’s always maintained a sense of humour and a light-hearted approach to life. He’s appeared in hit comedies like The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory. In 2014 he was interviewed by John Oliver on Last Week Tonight, where Oliver asked Hawking if there might be a parallel universe in which he is smarter than the scientist. Hawking responded that there might be, but that there might also be a parallel universe where Oliver is funnier than himself.
Stephen had always expressed a desire for humans to develop a theory of everything: a single set of laws which would govern the entire universe. "This complete set of laws can give us the answers to questions, like ‘how did the universe begin?’" he said. "Where is it going and will it have an end? If so, how will it end? If we find the answers to these questions, we really shall know the mind of God." He made a significant step towards this in the 1970s by combining parts of quantum physics and general relativity, a feat which people previously thought was impossible, whilst studying black holes.
Stephen was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 22 and was given two to three years to live. In one of his last speeches before he passed, Stephen spoke about his experience with this disease: “At first I became depressed,” he said, “I seemed to be getting worse pretty rapidly, there didn’t seem any point working on my PhD because I didn’t know if I would live long enough to finish it.” He then went on to say “after my expectations (of surviving) had been reduced to zero, every new day became a bonus and I began to appreciate everything I did have.” “Whilst there is life, there is hope,” he said.
While these were incredible achievements in the world of science, Stephen really secured his status as a global celebrity after the publication of his book ‘A Brief History of Time’ in 1988. The aim of this book was to explain the basics of cosmology in a way which people with little to
The legacy he left behind was one of scientific discovery on a colossal level, but perhaps more importantly, he showed that for as long as you breathe, you can and should do everything in your power to keep going and achieve your goals.

Bournemouth has recently made its way into national news due to the poor treatment of the homeless in the town. This occurred after it emerged that metal bars had been installed on benches, in an attempt to stop the homeless from ‘misusing’ them after multiple complaints from businesses and residents in local areas. Homelessness in Bournemouth has commonly been an issue throughout the years, with the number of rough sleepers found on the streets increasing by 292% from 2010 - 2015, according to Bournemouth Borough Council. This statistic can be compared to the national rise of 102%, highlighting how Bournemouth has one of the largest rates of homeless people in the country. Bournemouth has previously been shown in a negative light after reports from the BBC highlighted the harsh conditions faced by the vast amount of homeless people in the area. This includes the local council playing bagpipe music in order to force people away from Bournemouth rail station, as well as the council buying one-way train tickets for those ‘sleeping rough’ to make them retreat elsewhere. However, there has been funding for 200 hostel beds and the introduction of a Local Welfare Assistance Fund to help these people in financial difficulty, possibly proving that the rapid increase in homeless people over the last few years is taking the council by storm and that they cannot quickly adapt to this change in numbers. The beginning of this year saw tragedy in Dorset after a rough sleeper nicknamed ‘Homeless Kev’ passed away on the streets of Bournemouth. Although the cause of his death has not been established, one factor which could not have helped towards his overall health was that the individual’s sleeping bag and possessions were apparently removed by the local council during a clean-up of the area, according to a friend of the deceased who told the Bournemouth Echo. Bournemouth Borough Council deny such claims of taking away possessions, but perhaps more could have been done to help ‘Kev’ in the first place. To get an inside view of Bournemouth Borough Council’s attitude towards the homeless,
Green Party councillor, Simon Bull, told Nerve Magazine: “We see the numbers are rising. Measures that are put in place that make life harder for those without homes are, at best, misguided. It is good that Poole have put on hold plans to fine beggars and rough sleepers and that Bournemouth have removed the bars from benches in the town but much more needs to be done to address the situation. “I was barracked by council members when asking, in full council, for more support for the homeless - that attitude is appalling from those elected by the residents of Bournemouth.” However, efforts are being made to make Bournemouth’s rough sleeper’s lives easier. Bournemouth’s anti-homeless benches were recently brought to the attention of music artist, Professor Green, who in early February released an Instagram live video of himself removing the bars from the benches manually, saying “we’re showing what three and a half grand versus £18 can do.” Another hero to the homeless, especially with the recent villain of the ‘Beast from the East’, is the Italian cuisine chain of Franco Manca, who gave out free pizzas to the homeless during the cold weather. Although this was done all over the UK, Sandro Spahiu, the chain’s operation manager, was seen to be working in Bournemouth at the time of the blizzard and it was here that she began giving out pizzas to those forced to live out in the cold. Homeless people are usually stereotyped to be violent and a problem for society, but, when taking time to look past these stigmas, it must be realised that these apparent problems for society are real people and should not always be treated with the ill-respect that they are sometimes found to receive. If you would like to help the homeless and donate in order to improve the wellbeing of others, please make contact with a local homeless charity, including Shelter Bournemouth, AOK Rucksack Appeal or HopeForFood Bournemouth to help those in need in Bournemouth.

It’s exam time again. It seems to fly round every year and suddenly you realise you don’t have long until that dreaded day. You start to panic and begin to rush your studying. This makes you feel even more stressed and you start to lose out on sleep. You stay up all night trying to finish revising. Procrastinating can also happen when you have assignments, with many students leaving their work to the final week before the hand in date, often pulling all-nighters to finish it. But why do we procrastinate during exam and assignment time? Normally fear takes hold of us. We worry how we are going to finish a 10,000-word essay or even have the motivation to begin. How are we going to fit it in around our social life? The worst is the thought of having to sit down for a long period of time and study on a subject about which we aren’t confident. Then there’s the overwhelming feeling of a lot of work needing to be done in a short amount of time. We normally feel this if we have an unpleasant task to do. This makes our brain panic and decide to put it off for as long as possible. So how can we stop ourselves procrastinating when we need to get on with our work before the deadline? Here are some handy tips you can use when you’re studying or writing an assignment. 1) Control your social media usage. In the weeks leading up to your exam or assignment limit your social media time. This will help you concentrate on your work. Don’t ban social media altogether but limit the hours each day and use that time to study. 2) Create a fun, dedicated study space. Tidy up your desk or where you study so you have enough space to work. Make sure that you’re comfortable in your seat. Use coloured
post it notes as colour has such a profound impact on how the brain remembers information. If you find that working at university helps, go to the library. I, myself, find that environment helps me to concentrate. 3) Make a timetable of when you’re going to work. Make a timetable which looks appealing by using different colours and pictures. This will help to motivate you to spend the designated time on your work. You can set times for when you have a break. It’s very important that you take regular breaks as the memory can only take so much information. On your break it’s important to have food and drink and take a walk as exercise helps improve your memory and motivates you. You can also break tasks into smaller parts. 4) Reward yourself when you’ve done work. Have your favourite food, go to the cinema, or even have a relaxing bubble bath when you have achieved doing a section of work from your timetable. This will make yourself feel better, and knowing you have something to look forward to afterwards will help to motivate you to do your work. 5) Remove distractions from your study space. If you know you’re going to be distracted by your smart phone ten minutes into your studies, remove it from the room. It is appealing to go on Facebook instead of doing work, but you will get more done if you remove your phone, and it means you will feel better because you’ve done your studying. Give your phone to a trusted friend whilst you are doing this. Make sure that you only have the tabs open on the internet which are connected to studying or your assignment.

Best ways to stop procrastinating 20

The VACCINES THE INTERVIEW Hot off the release of their new album Combat Sports, Nerve caught up with The Vaccines drummer Timothy Lanham to learn more about the latest record. In the singles that have already been released there are certainly variations in terms of the sounds that are coming through. ‘Nightclub’ feels like a heavier rock track whereas I Can’t Quit is a fun and pop-like sound. What was your overall aim for the style of the new album? I would say that Nightclub is probably the heaviest it gets on the album. Towards the end of the album we tried to take it more so in that direction, but it’s certainly a pop-based album initially that got taken in the direction of the heavier, guitar based stuff. You can hear that in I Can’t Quit; its still kind of heavy and spikier. You won’t expect to hear anything heavier than Nightclub but that was still the direction we were going in. It has been said that The Vaccines are returning to their earlier, more energetic roots on this new album. Would you say that’s true? Yeah, exactly that. It sounds cliché to say that we’re going back to our roots or whatever but I
think more of what we had in mind was that we wanted to make songs that were fun to play on stage, that were energetic. I think historically we’re an energetic band and I think we wanted to keep [that] in the music. We really focused upon keeping it somewhere that’s high-octane and exciting to come out on stage and play. Was creating songs that you could just have a good time with a big part of the creative process of the album? Yeah, that’s a major part of it. I remember Freddie (Cowan) was saying at the start of the process that we would all prefer “guard dog over puppy dog” as part of the attitude that the band had when going into this new project. We wanted to stray away from something that involved straight beats and soft guitars. In recent weeks, we’ve all seen the video to I Can’t Quit, which is fun and very aesthetically pleasing. Was that a fun thing to be a part of? Yeah, it was cool man. We went down to shoot it in Italy for a couple of days and wanted to keep it all exciting and authentic-looking as opposed to something filmed in somebody’s backyard. It’s always good to go somewhere that’s new and fun

ENTERTAINMENT to film, and I think that will be a theme for the rest of the videos, as we want it to look fun and inspirational. We also wanted the band to look cool and like something people would want to be a part of. Do you still keep your ear to the indie rock scene? What bands are The Vaccines listening to at the moment? I think it varies for each of us, but actually some of the guitar on the new album is inspired largely by a lot of old Queen records. It definitely references those older bands like Led Zeppelin for example. Personally, I’ve been enjoying music that’s a lot wackier like Charlotte Gainsbourg, but as a musician it’s important to cut off some of the inspiration from other artists that aren’t

helpful to the direction of the album, so ultimately those old rock records were the most helpful in creating the new album. Combat Sports is going to be the first Vaccines album in which you were part of the creation process in the studio. What’s your favourite thing about being a part of that creative process? For me, one of the best things is being able to be in the studio and f*** around with different sounds that you want to hear work, and to really get the chance to experiment with it as much as you want and give the songs the best possible chance they can have. That’s the best thing about dedicating a year to making an album full time. Also, there’s nothing more satisfying than to tour it and see real humans enjoy it in real life. vitalised with the energetic, adrenaline-fuelled Norgaard - a real treat to witness live. This anthem was followed by another song from the new album in Surfing in the Sky which leant itself particularly well to a live performance. In fact, the new songs in general performed better under the circumstances. The fact that many of them were slightly quieter and/or slower made them easier to listen to than the somewhat distorted, faster rock songs.
Words & Design: STEPHEN WRIGHT On the 5th of April The Vaccines performed an 80-minute long set of the old and the new at Bournemouth’s 02 Academy. The gig got off to a flying start with Nightclub, one of the singles from the new album Combat Sports. It was followed up with older fan favourites including Teenage Icon and Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra). Regardless, the crowd had a great time, as picked upon by frontman Justin Young who noted that “people say the crowds get crazier the further North you go. You’re proving those people wrong.” On the third leg of their UK tour, the band were all on fine form, even if guitarist Freddie Cowan did break a string and have to replace his guitar mid-solo! The Vaccines are a great, energetic band to watch visually, and a good lighting display only added to making them worth watching as well as listening to, but the scene could have been set with a more interesting back drop than a plain white curtain if I had to be picky about the stage. Either way, six years on from the band’s previous display on the South Coast, it’s fair to say Bournemouth had great fun with The Vaccines.

FILM REVIEWS tomb raider
Video game adaptations are a seemingly cursed sub sector of cinema. We are still yet to have a unanimously positive opinion of a film based on a game. Despite the bad wrap video games get on the big screen, Hollywood still has enough faith to put millions of dollars towards making them. One such film is the latest Warner Bros backed Tomb Raider film. The third film to be made, and the first without Angelina Jolie, Tomb Raider is a reboot that takes heavy inspiration from the 2013 video game reboot of the same name. Desexualised, gritty and surprisingly well structured, Tomb Raider is one of the best video game based movies to date, however it isn’t enough to break the age old curse. Tomb Raider feels like Warner Bros answer to Universal’s The Mummy (2017) and their failed attempt at the Dark Universe. Tomb Raider’s three acts are marked by three very different tones; act 1 is a dumb fun Hollywood action blockbuster, act 2 is a faithful gritty reboot based on the 2013 video game, and finally, act 3 is a Warner Bros/ Conjuringverse horror movie. The film switches from too many tones too frequently that the resulting film lacks any identity. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Tomb Raider is the 12A certificate rating - the film fails to carry across the traumatic circumstances Lara goes through in her first ever adventure. Overall, Tomb Raider is a muddled origin story with a several conflicting tones, but it’s perhaps the most respectable a video game movie has ever been to its source material, despite being slightly predictable.

Nostalgia for the 1980’s has become increasingly more popular in film and television. With TV shows like Stranger Things and The Goldbergs, as well as films like Guardians of the Galaxy spearheading this newfound cinematic appreciation. As a result, people have been going crazy about everything retro and everything 80’s. Now Steven Spielberg, the man behind the most influential pop culture of that decade, tries his hand at 80’s nostalgia, bringing Ernest Cline’s novel, Ready Player One to the big screen. The resulting film is as classic Spielberg as you can get, a fun adventure that acts as a homage to the decade that arguably made Spielberg the Godfather of cinema. From its characters to its story to its score, Ready Player One is 100% Spielberg, harking back to his adventure blockbusters of the 80’s. Although this makes Ready Player One a fun cinematic thrill ride, it does also bring into question whether this is simply a hollow repetition of Spielberg’s glory days? Ready Player One isn’t Spielberg’s most successful formulaic outing, and it pales in comparison to most of his filmography, however it does prove he’s still got it, being a hell of a lot better than the Post and Spielberg’s best film since Bridge of Spies. My one big issue with Ready Player One is the amount of things on screen at one time. The screen at times is completely overwhelmed with pop culture characters, and thus bringing up the question as to the hollowness of this film. Overall, Ready Player One is a classic Spielberg film for the nerds in all of us. Not a patch on his previous efforts, but far exceeding his most recent works. Ready Player One will satisfy pop culture nerds, Spielberg fans and lovers of both alike.

ENTERTAINMENT
black panther
We are less than 3 months into 2018 and already we have ourselves a cinematic milestone. Black Panther may not be the first time a black superhero has been portrayed on screen, but it is the first tent pole, family friendly blockbuster film, featuring a predominately black cast and directed by a black man. Ryan Coogler continues his win streak, going 3 for 3 with Black Panther, maintaining a level of authorship of the film, whilst crafting a blockbuster film worthy of the milestone it has set. What makes Black Panther stand out amongst the oversaturated landscape of tent pole blockbusters and Marvel films, is its rich black culture. Black Panther is a celebration of African American blackness, from its origins in Africa to now. This is perhaps best exampled by Ludwig Göransson’s score, fusing together African drums and hip hop in his evolutionary score. He deserves a lot more credit than he is getting, considering everyone’s fascination with everything Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick’s soundtrack may be good, but Göransson’s score is a work of pure art. As much as Black Panther is a celebration of blackness, it doesn’t shy away from the struggles of the black people. This is articulated in the film by it’s antagonist, Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan. Killmonger is perhaps one of the best big screen superhero villains ever. for me, the best since Michael Keaton’s Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Killmonger’s story is that of the struggling black man. He is a man who has suffered and lived his life watching his people suffer, but now he’s had enough. Aware that Wakanda has advanced technologies which could help the Black social movement, he seeks to use vibranium to help the black man gain control in the world. His struggle is a real one and his intentions are understandably human, making him an antagonist you not only understand, but also root for. The movie however, isn’t just about blackness, it breaks down gender barriers completely, simple showing women as strong individuals fighting alongside men equally. As well as this strong yet subtle message of gender equality, Black Panther’s entire narrative centres around a message that governments around the world should seriously take note of. The message being that, wise men build bridges, foolish men build walls. In an American political climate where lies are fed to the public on a daily basis, the film delivers an educational message to its global audience until its first end credit scene, which takes aim at the Trump administration. Overall, Black Panther is more than just another Marvel blockbuster. It may not narratively reinvent the superhero genre with its plot points and events, but that was never the job of this film. What Black Panther does is embed its encouraging political messages and gorgeous culture into an incredibly engaging story with high steaks, complete with one of the greatest villains in modern cinema. Wakanda forever!

THE DEATH OF NME words: Claire Boad Design: lily coleman The news of NME ending its print run is now reaching many music fans and to be honest, its hit me. All I can really think is that it’s a damn shame. In a market full of magazines focusing on Justin Bieber and the One Direction boys, NME was a place where rock and indie bands still took president. Over the years it built up a rep of a magazine for the fans, with the NME tour bringing some of the hottest new bands to people up and down the country. Its closest competitor is Kerrang magazine, but as it has shifted its focus to more pop punk bands, NME was able to take dominance over the rock and indie market, with a circulation reaching 290,000 between July and December 2017.
bigger as it wasn’t just another broadsheet newspaper to go, but a music conglomerate that has so much influence that even the second biggest stage at Reading Festival was sponsored by it. Even though NME will still be available online, there will definitely be a gap in the newspaper stands that will be hard to fill. I personally loved picking up the latest copy of the magazine every Friday and it will certainly be something I’ll miss looking forward too. As for its effects on the wider world? So long as the website remains successful and the NME awards keep people entertained, then I think little will change. But if this is the beginning of the end for the NME, then the promotion and popularity of indie music will change forever.
February saw the NME Awards take place where the likes of Liam Gallagher, Muse, Kasabian and many more were awarded for things that the pop genre normally dominates everywhere else. Once again, the fans came first with these awards as those nominated and the winners were both voted for by the fans. it was always the fans. The night was a huge success which means that the news of NME going out of print is somewhat more shocking as bands and fans alike were given the impression that NME was only growing stronger. This isn’t the first time that a major publication has gone out of print and moved to online content only. The Independent did that a couple years ago. But for some reason the sense of loss for the NME feels much

High End or Drugstore?: Battle of the Mascaras Words: Raluca Rusoiu Design: lily coleman
27
FASHION ‘Your eyes are the reflection of the spirit’, some say… so what can a good mascara do for you to enhance this?
Dior Addict IT – Lash in 092 This 9ml mascara retails for £25.50. The supple elastomer brush is supposed to pick up the tiniest lashes giving your eyes that dramatic look we all hope to have – or at least that is what Dior claims. The website says the mascara’s formula ‘combines waxes that go on thick for fabulous volume with a clear gel base for pure and radiant color’. Now, that is a bit of a statement. But oh my days, I think I bought myself a piece of heaven! Some mascaras pick up so much product that it just hides the eyes and gives them an unpolished, messy look. Not Dior though: the mascara does everything it says on the website and more. Length, volume, pigmentation, class – worth it. Plus it makes you feel like royalty just for owning it.
This 9ml mascara is only £10.99. The cool thing about this one is that it has 2 ends: one curved and one hourglass. The hourglass wand is for a black primer which is meant to thicken the lashes. The curved brush is made to lengthen and give a false lash look. The innovative 2in1 mascara got me so intrigued I had to buy it. However, a bit of disappointment happened: the brushes are picking up so much product that even when you try to put some back in the tube you still end up with loads of product on the lashes. The primer and the curved brush are doing the same exact thing, when they are actually supposed to be doing different ‘jobs’. Lashes end up looking clunky and too thick. The only way I managed to save the look was to go back with the Dior brush and separate my lashes, also picking up a bit of that thick layer of product. Not happy.
L’Oreal Paris False Lash Superfast Red Carpet Mascara in Black
Yves Saint Laurent Luxurious Essentially the same thing as the one above: Mascara for False Lash same bottle and brushes, same price, same Effect in Black quantity. However, the end with the primer is 7.5ml available in six different shades retails for £26. ‘Now enriched with further care ingredients - 4 sensuous oils, the formula leaves lashes more flexible, lengthened and feel more durably supple’. Yes, it does do all of that, plus pigmentation and the illusion of false lashes without having too much product on the eye. However, the one (major) thing this luxurious brand is not doing is to make the mascara last all day. If you do not use fixing spray after applying your makeup, you will end up noticing black stains underneath your eyes in just 2-3 hours. Bad, bad mascara, especially for the high price.
L’Oreal Paris False Lash Superstar XFiber in Extreme Black
this time white and it dries down transparently. This mascara is doing its job in all aspects: lasts the whole day, lengthens and thickens giving that false lash look and is very pigmented. This one does not give those spidery chunky eyelashes, which makes me think L’Oreal might have completely different formulas for similar designed products. All in all, mascaras in my opinion are a necessity in order to complete an eye look. Whether they have to be expensive or not, that is only up to you to decide. Big brand does not necessarily mean better quality as you can tell. Their packaging is amazing though – you can tell you are paying a bit extra to get that luxurious feeling. However, it’s the inside that counts the most.

five fresh fragrances for spring Words: ruby ellis Design: lily coleman DKNY – Be Delicious
Straight from the Big Apple itself, this fragrance ventures away from classic spring florals, swapping them for something juicier. It opens with the crisp, fruity scent of green apple, melon and cucumber and dries down to a blend of exotic flowers and woods for a sensual perfume that is very modern and sweet. It is perfect for when the days start to get warmer as the smell is refreshing. It is unique but sophisticated, meaning you can wear it both day and night, whenever you want to feel delicious.
Glossier – You
Available as an eau de parfum or a solid perfume, cult brand Glossier claims the first ingredient to this perfume is in the title: you. Musky base notes melt into your skin to create a “personal perfume experience”, and extra layers of freshness add some sparkle. It is spicy and warm and floral and sweet all at once. The idea is that it doesn’t wear like a traditional perfume, instead it enhances your natural smell, making it the perfect every day spring fragrance.
Viktor and Rolf – Flowerbomb
This now classic fragrance is beautifully feminine. With top notes of mandarin
and saffron, heart notes of roses and jasmine and base notes of amber, vanilla, and patchouli it mixes classic florals with a sugary sweetness. Don’t be fooled by florals though, this is a grown up, statement perfume. You can wear it and be soft and feminine whilst still letting the world know that you mean business.
Miu Miu – L’Eau Rosée
New for 2018, this is the sweeter, pink sister of the original Miu Miu fragrance. Lemons and limes are followed by the main note of lily of the valley and then peonies and roses. This is Miu Miu’s take on a classic rose perfume for a young woman. It is fresh and light, making for great everyday wear, giving you that clean out of the shower feeling.
Prada – Candy Sugar Pop
Prada announced a new addition to the Candy collection in February. Sugar Pop doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is fun and youthful, with main notes of red apple, vanilla and white peach. It takes inspiration from sweets, with a colour block bottle and hints of caramel from the original fragrance, but still manages to stay fresh and not sickly. It is sure to add some playfulness and character to your perfume collection.

Your Guide To Festival Makeup Words: zlatna nedev Design: lily coleman It may only be April, but many of you are already looking forward to the festival season. Here is the ultimate makeup guide of this year’s hottest trends and best looks to have you slaying Summer Ball. Along with the usual glitter and sequin looks that have been killing the festival scene the past few years, there are few more trends that you should try out this summer to complete the look.
Ditch the Contour In the past few months there has been a transition from extremely heavy contour to a much lighter-looking makeup. For the warmer season and especially for festivals when it is all about the sparkle, a fresh, glowing skin is the way to go. For defined facial features, try flushes of colour on your cheeks and subtle sheen of highlighter rather than sharp contouring.
Swap Smoke for Shine Sparkles are for life, not just for Christmas. So swap the usual brown and black eyeshadow for shimmery textures and metallic accents. They are set to last longer, so no matter how hot it is outside you’ve got your eyeshadow locked in place, looking fabulous.
Glitter-arty
Because what is festival makeup without glitter, right? There are so many ways to use glitter and sequin and the best thing is that there is no strict rule where and how much you should use. You can plug into the sequin grid with glistening cheeks, use glittery eyeliner or ask one of your friends to blow glitter on your forehead. The options are endless!
Think Pink If last year was all about ‘Sunset shadows’, burnt orange eyes and Urban Decay’s Naked Heat palette, then this year is about ‘Pink peepers’. Just pick any shade from cotton candy to bubblegum to full blown Barbie. Barry M has your back when it comes to bargain-priced vivid shades.
Colour Wash If not now, when? Festivals allow you to be wild with your style, so let it loose with a bold pigment eye. To make it easier follow the Drag Queen rulebook and smooth down your eyebrows with non-toxic cosmetics glue and then brush them flat. Once your brows are tamed, go heavy with the primer and then add several coatings of pigment-rich powder shadow. Skip the liner and just comb and curl your lashes.

How to mix prints (like a pro!) Words: tiina karppi
FASHION
Design: lily coleman
We all know that one person who is really into incorporating different patterns and colours into one outfit… and often ends up looking like a hot mess.
Swapping the base colour and wearing the two pieces alongside each other will work with any colour- or print combination.
Maybe they have made you slightly scared to combine out-there prints together – however, fear not! We have all the help you need.
Make sure to hold back with accessories and choose neutral-coloured shoes in order to avoid the overall look getting messy.
With these three tips and tricks on how to mix prints you can elevate your plain everyday look into something chic and unexpected.
Start out small So you have a cute floral top but those black trousers look way too heavy with it? Opt for a small print such as thin stripes or tiny checks to lighten up the overall look as well as to make it more fashion-forward. To tie it all together, throw on a chilled jacket made with the same fabric as your trousers and apply a pop of colour on your lips that matches your top.
Finishing touches Don’t want to invest in a patterned statement piece of clothing? No worries – the world of accessories and shoes is filled with bold prints that add colour and personality even to the most mundane of outfits.
Go bold with inverse colours
In fact, the more one-coloured your base is, the better, as it allows you to add on any two or three bright pieces of accessorises. What’s even better, you can find the trendiest pieces to enhance your outfit from second-hand shops! Experiment with daring shoes, colourful clutches and fabulous hats which will look fantastic against simple jeans and top.
Combining a black and white jumpsuit with a white and black jacket or cardigan will never look heavy or loud, but totally cool instead.
Most importantly whatever you decide to wear, rock it – fashion is all about having fun at the end of the day! What’s the point in dressing up if you’re not enjoying it!

sex for rent
To a sea of applause and standing ovations, Oprah Winfrey delivered the final few lines of an impassioned and heartfelt speech at the Golden Globe. During her acceptance of the Cecil b Demille Award, Oprah touched upon the power of seeing as a child Sidney Poitier become the first African-American to win an Oscar; the injustice once experienced by activist Recy Taylor as she watched the six White men who raped and abused her avoid conviction; and finally, she proclaimed a new dawn of equality and female empowerment. In short, Oprah spoke like a president. Post-speech, the outpouring of love wasn’t just confined to the Words: silvitareverberated chegeacross the Beverly Hill hotel, world as newspapers scrambled to weigh up the design: molly gardner merits of an Oprah election bid, and Twitter blew up with the hashtag #Oprah2020. Would you vote for Oprah? Should America vote for Oprah Winfrey in 2020? With a glittering career spanning decades as well mediums: radio, talk shows, films and even books, Oprah has catapulted herself from humble beginnings to billionaires and global brand status, with name recognition comparable with likes of Subway, Nike and Microsoft. Honestly, just think about it…who hasn’t heard of Oprah? Considering her career has been built upon female empowerment, providing a voice to the voiceless and philanthropy – her girl’s school in South Africa being a testament to that, while most celebrities divide opinion, Oprah has always been one of the few who across demographic lines is equally admired as well as adored. Without a single ounce of experience in public office or even a history of engaging with politics, the chances of Oprah reaching the White House may seem extremely unlikely. However, didn’t we once say that about Donald Trump? True, in the 2016 election the promise of change rang louder and truer than the need for experience. After all, Hilary Clinton was the most experienced presidential candidate in history. Yet, where did all that leave her? A loser, and with the spurned opportunity of becoming America’s first female president, ever. While it is unclear what Oprah’s stances are on subjects such as foreign policy, the economy and North Korea, it is safe to assume that she’d have a liberal approach. And considering she’s the diametric opposite of Trump, she’ll likely bring about that converted change also. But, will it be enough meaningful change? Could America seriously be considering electing another celebrity billionaire as president? Is all that is required for the highest office, fame and money? A crescendo of talk over Oprah being president is a sign that America is going through a crisis of identity and confidence. Not only does it show lack of faith in Trump, fundamentally it exposes the weaknesses in the Democratic Party when a political outside can generate more passion from the public than their own. American politics is in turmoil. And yes, Donald Trump has only added to the mountain of questions. However, Oprah is not the answer. and if not addressed soon, rent for sex could lead to a full-on national crisis. Although housing charity Shelter would argue that we’re already at that point now, saying “This isn’t just in bad taste or ‘creepy’. It is a dangerous attempt to establish deeply exploitative relationships off the back of homelessness.” Whilst it is not illegal for someone to post on websites such as Craigslist, advertising the wavering of rent in exchange for ‘added extras’ or ‘physical arrangements’, it is illegal to enforce such arrangements according to the Sexual Offences Act of 2003. However, Justice Secretary David Lidington’s stance would mean criminal actions for even the mere suggestion of such arrangements. In a letter to Hove MP Peter Kyle, he wrote, “An offence is committed when a person offers accommodation in return for sex, as they are inciting/causing another person to have sex with them in return for payment.” Thus, if the law takes the matter so seriously, why do landlords still insist on posting such ads on Craigslist in the first place? Well, according to BBC Three Documentary Rent for Sex, most

men simply don’t see it as being inherently wrong or even breaking the law. One landlord even tried to turn the tables and play the victim card himself, saying “I’m a just a really lonely man looking for company.” Another tried to explain away his actions by claiming it was a fair and upfront exchange, putting the case forward that the women are always fully aware of the arrangements before moving in. In both cases, such explanations are the main reasons why this issue has taken such a long time to even gain traction. We’re failing as a society to see the fundamental and moral implications at play here. Rent for Sex commodifies women’s bodies and puts them at risk of corrosive exploitation. Whilst the majority of these landlords may treat it as a mere exchange, there is no doubt that there are those with a darker intent, wishing to maliciously lure in desperate women to do them serious harm. Exchanging rent for sex is criminally and morally wrong. As a country, it’s our collective responsibility to ensure that we protect the most vulnerable people in our society before it’s too late.

We need to talk about school shootings words: silva chege Design: Molly Gardner
Recently, Florida’s Parkland High School became just the latest host to a pandemic which over the years has become uniquely American – the school shooting. This time it was a 19-year-old gunman wielding an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, who claimed the lives of 17 innocents during a merciless rampage. As always, our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the deceased. However, unfortunately, in recent times such condolences have begun to lose weight against these multiplying atrocities. The bitter truth is, as the weeks and months pass, Parkland will eventually be just another name on a list, and the 17 dead will become mere statics. And the worst part of it all? Such massacres are rapidly losing their ability to shock. Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hooks… we’ve been here too many times before. Sure, with 456 deaths, mass shootings only account for 1.2% of total gun-related deaths; far lower than the 11,000 from homicide or 22,000 due to suicide. In America, just like anywhere else in the world, you’re more likely to kill yourself than be killed by someone else. But, at the same time, only in the United States is one person every 15 minutes lost to gun-related violence. And with 300 million guns - enough for every man, woman and child in the country, the U.S is officially the gun capital of the world. From a European perspective, the answer to all this is glaringly simple – get rid of the guns! However, this would mean casually, and naively dismissing what it means for U.S citizens to be fundamentally American – freedom. After all, modern America was built out of breaking away and defending themselves from oppressive rule and government – i.e. The British Empire, and
without guns, the USA wouldn’t exist today. So, if gun prohibition is out of the question, what else can America do? For starters, mainstream media channels must re-evaluate how they cover acts of mass killings, in a way that reports the facts while not glamourising the actions. The use of such terms as ‘Lone Wolf’ imprints in impressionable and unstable minds, that such mass killings are a source of heroism or achievement or points in a video game. And with 24-hour news ramping up publicity, researchers allude to a phenomenon called contagion, which suggests that people already predisposed to violence could be compelled to commit copycat crimes. Stricter gun regulations are also a seductive proposition, but the chances of seeing them remains a mere pipe dream. The haunting truth is that powerful pro-gun organisations such as the NRA (National Rifle Association) consistently have a vested interest in lobbying against the passing of progressive legislation because the firearm industry is worth billions - $31.8 billion a year. In the States, when people are faced with reports of terrorism or mass shootings, instead of opposing the proliferation of guns - they buy even more of them. In the words of NRA Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” Oh, and let’s not forget - Donald Trump is very much pro-gun. Ultimately, the solution to America’s gun problem remains distant and murky at best. At worst, America will forever be vulnerable to the spectre of mass shootings, merely counting down the clock until it can strike again. Until then, all we can do is raise the American flag at half-mast and try to mend our ever-breaking hearts.

England kicked off their 2018 World Cup preparations with a 1-0 win in Holland and a 1-1 draw at home to Italy. The results themselves are solid, if unspectacular – but what got England fans talking over the two weeks of internationals was the style of play on show. The Three Lions displayed confidence and calmness in both their fixtures, which bodes well for Russia in the summer. NERVE takes a look at three players who contributed to this style all across the pitch – one attacker, one midfielder, and one defender. Jesse Lingard: Manchester United youngster Lingard was directly involved in both goals England scored over the break. He scored his debut international goal in the win against Holland, and was on hand to provide an assist for Jamie Vardy against Italy. He is enjoying his best ever season at United, and has translated that form well to the international stage. Lingard has honed his playmaking skills to go well with his pace this season, and both were on full display in the England kit. In the lead up to his goal, for example, he both carried the ball from one half to another, and exchanged a brilliant set of passes with Danny Rose before slotting home. If Lingard can tighten up his decision making, he promises to be one of the spearheads for Southgate’s exuberant young attack.
through the lanes, license to run with the ball, but a duty to press when off the ball. Cook stuck to that brief admirably, and hopefully the Cherries youngster wins himself a spot on the plane to Russia. Kyle Walker: Walker surprisingly started at centre-back in both international fixtures. A natural rightback, his position was initially puzzling. But the Manchester City man proved his doubters wrong with an assured performance in both matches. Walker was on the right side of a back three. All three centre-backs were pivotal to England’s play, with their direct passes often cutting through the opposition midfield and starting attacks. Walker was especially involved in this. His cross-field passes often found wing-backs in acres of space against Italy. With his natural running ability, the ex-Tottenham man also ran through midfield with ease in both fixtures and dug out crosses. Walker made a surprisingly good centre-back in England’s new system, and may even start in the World Cup on the basis of these performances.
Lewis Cook: U-20 World Cup winning captain Cook made his senior debut for the Three Lions against Italy. It was the first time a Bournemouth player has been capped for England while still playing for the Cherries. He was on for 20 minutes against the Italians, and gave a decent showing of himself. Cook’s best qualities are his dribbling and passing skills. While he was unable to stamp himself on the friendly, those attributes were on show, especially through a difficult scooped cross for Marcus Rashford, which Cook somehow accomplished despite being marked tightly. Cook’s deployment shows how Southgate intends to use his midfielders – quick passing

Cherry picking the summer signings Words: Dan Davis Design: Luke Hewitt It’s been another good season for AFC Bournemouth. They were the only team in the Premier League not to sign a player in January. But to show such inactivity in the Summer would be to misplace too much trust in an ageing squad that’s in need of a refresh should it became an established top flight side. Here’s a few players who might be worth considering… Danny Ings The former Burnley forward hasn’t had much luck at Liverpool, but it hasn’t been for the want of trying. Injuries have kept him out of the squad, and the talented Firmino has kept him out of the starting lineup, but when he does come on he works tirelessly off the ball to create chances for his side. It’s only a matter of time before he finds the back of the net regularly. Welcome him back to Bournemouth in a move that would suit all parties, give him a good run of games, and I’m sure we’d see him firing on all cylinders. Kieran Gibbs With Charlie Daniels Bournemouth’s only real option at left-back at present, another one wouldn’t go amiss. Gibbs looked a threat providing the service for Rondon in Albion’s 2-1 defeat to The Cherries, and the ex-Arsenal man will surely be looking to stay in the Premier League after the end of this season.

Jonjo Shelvey It seems unlikely that Harry Arter will be a Bournemouth player next season. The Irishman has barely featured this season and recently handed over ownership of his academy to Simon Francis. With him on the way, Howe will need to bring in a new centre-midfielder for the sake of squad depth. Were Lewis Cook to pick up a long-term injury, a midfield consisting exclusively of Dan Gosling and Andrew Surman wouldn’t be entirely convincing. I’d love to see Jonjo Shelvey at the Vitality. Jamaal Lascelles Nathan Ake is leagues above anyone else in Bournemouth’s current defence, so players ought to be brought in to match him. Steve Cook is usually good enough, but still prone to costing points through defensive errors. Simon Francis isn’t going to get any faster, and Jack Simpson is still very inexperienced. If Bournemouth don’t bring in a new centre-half, hopefully it’s because Tyrone Mings is ready to be thrown into that position when he returns from injury. Jamaal Lascelles could be a decent option. Cherry Chat is the only AFC Bournemouth talk show, broadcast on Nerve Radio every Friday from 5-6pm.

Australia’s Ball Tampering Scandal Words: Calum Goddard Design: Luke Hewitt During the third test between Australia and South Africa, Australia’s fast-medium bowler Cameron Bancroft was caught ball tampering by television cameras. It appeared Bancroft was using a piece of sandpaper to roughen up one of the sides of the ball, to generate more movement on what proved to be a tough wicket. The current Ashes holders were immediately accused of ball tampering as a result. This is the unlawful alteration of the surface or seam of a ball on the field to affect its motion when bowled, as a result giving the bowling side an unfair advantage.
took place over the winter, where the Aussies ran out comprehensive 4-0 winners. Punishment has been issued by Cricket Australia, with Bancroft has been handed a nine-month international ban for physically tampering with the ball. Stricter punishments have been handed to Australia’s captain and vice-captain: Smith and Warner have both been cast aside from the international side for a whole year. Smith, who is in the form of his life, runs the risk of never captaining the Australia side.
Australian cricket captain Steve Smith was forced to make a statement with Bancroft after the incident, where Smith explained that he was aware of the tactic and was ashamed to condone the behaviour. As a result of the incident a full investigation was carried out, vice-captain David Warner was found to have played a central role in the ball tampering scheme and is facing a very public backlash across the world. Ex-England opener and captain Michael Vaughan says he suspects Australia were also ball tampering during the Ashes that

The International break Words: Dan Davis Design: Luke Hewitt Whisper it quietly, but England’s performance against the Netherlands was better than expected, wasn’t it? Gareth Southgate’s permanent appointment as the national team boss was much maligned, many believing the ex-Crystal Palace and Aston Villa defender to be another ‘yes’ man, built in the same vein as Roy Hodgson. The football under Hodgson had been turgid and uninspiring, with underachievement in major international tournaments the forefront of his tenure in the Wembley dugout. But under Southgate, there have been noticeable improvements. The England boss was the heavy favourite to land the role after Hodgson’s departure, and he took charge of a squad filled to the brim with figures who should have been thrown to the peripherals of national team selection years ago. Now, many in the latest squad could be considered outsiders; those who haven’t endured the easiest ride in receiving their call-ups. However, the outfielders who started against the Netherlands in the 1-0 friendly victory all came from clubs in the last 16 of the Champions League. However, some have fallen out of favour away from international duty. Southgate selected them anyway, and they justified their manager’s risk with a controlled, steadied performance against the Dutch. The Three Lions’ patient approach when in control of the ball must have come as a shock to the supporting faithful and watching millions, all of whom would have held similar, average expectations for the performance. England effectively dominated from start to finish, and were fully deserving of coming away from Amsterdam with a win against the Dutch under their belts.
The worrying element to all this is the simple fact that England typically breeze through friendlies and qualifying for major tournaments, before slipping at the final hurdle and becoming the laughing stock of the continent once again. The ‘let’s all laugh at England’ mentality comes about every couple of years, and becomes more tedious with every early knockout. But this time around, things feel different. There is a slightly more upbeat approach to the upcoming World Cup in Russia, with the majority of England fans asking the question ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’. Obviously, another early exit from a World Cup wouldn’t leave too many surprised. The tiny England flags adorned from every passing car only tend to last roughly a week, before they are hurriedly torn down and hidden away for another couple of years. But with a promising group stage this time around, and a winnable round of 16 clash to come should England progress, Southgate may well be eyeing up a quarter-final finish at the very least. When Southgate became England manager, he was faced with a country that didn’t want him there, and a squad of underachievers. But in his short tenure, he has largely brought the fans back onside, and cast out the players who are unable to carry out his masterplan. With two more friendlies to come before the squad travel to Russia, Southgate is running out of time to finalise those who are in his plans, and any final tweaks to his tactics. But he is certainly taking the right steps, and his squad of misfits and outsiders may yet show the potential to shock the world once again.

The managerial merry-go-round

SPORT The Premier League is constantly billed as being the best, most competitive league in the world. Week after week we are treated to mindblowing, truly audacious captured moments of brilliance that never fail in taking my breath away. There is no finer sight than Eden Hazard weaving down the right flank, before beating his markers with a deft drop of the shoulder and a nonchalant roll of the heel. Even the most maligned of players have the ability to drill a thunderbolt from 40 yards into the top corner, past a helpless goalkeeper. These snapshots of football history have firmly placed the spotlight over England’s top flight, and the revenue generated by the broadcasters is only set to increase in the near future. Competition is rife for the chance to bring the Premier League into homes all across the world, and it also seems that competition is just as predominant when a club’s managerial role becomes vacant. Take David Moyes, for example; he may bedazzle you with his fading locks of gingerblonde hair and hardened Scottish smile. The Scot evidently has many qualities that present him as a warm, intelligent person and this could be his way to sneak back into Premier League dugouts. Now I’m not implying that Moyes isn’t worthy of taking up a Premier League job, but I really do feel like there are always other options out there – young managers chomping at the bit to steer away a top flight side from a relegation scrap and start to build a legacy. Next up in the firing line is Roy Hodgson. What a likeable figure he is. The architect behind Fulham’s glorious Europa League run, and the steadying of several other sides seemingly destined for the drop. But of course, England fans will find it hard to forgive him after the Three Lions’ failure to beat Iceland in the Round of 16 of Euro 2016. Rumours have it that Hodgson prepared his resignation speech at half time in that game, hardly the display of confidence his players may have needed.
He entered the Crystal Palace hot seat after Frank de Boer was dismissed early into the campaign. Turgid performances and underwhelming star players were dumped unceremoniously at Hodgson’s door, but he met the challenge with a steady hand and infectious owl-like grin. I should make it clear that I’m a big fan of Hodgson, and even though the limp performance against Iceland deservedly sealed his fate I was still saddened to see him depart in that fashion. Roy is certainly a good manager, and proven at stabilising top flight teams, but the fact is that after de Boer departed there was a chance to be creative with the appointment, and Steve Parish didn’t take it. He chose the boring, safe option. From the capital to the midlands, more specifically The Hawthorns. Now would be a good time to revisit some of Alan Pardew’s finest moments, particularly his ill-fated Samba dance in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United. Unfortunately, this is the only positive highlight I can think of, with the head-butt incident with David Meyler and foul-mouthed tirade at the docile Manuel Pellegrini thrusting Pardew into the news for all the wrong reasons. And now he’s taking West Brom into the Championship; another unwanted blot on his resume. There is something unsettling in the way that Pardew can dance the days away in Marbella during his unemployment, safe in the knowledge that another club will soon come calling for his services, while younger, fresh-faced tacticians remain cast in shadows. The Premier League holds such significance in modern football that managers from all over the world will cast lusting gazes at England. The opportunity is there for clubs to be creative, and ensure an exciting future for their supporters, but the sad fact is that many owners are too scared. So once again, as the managerial merry-goround continues, the footballing dinosaurs will inevitably return.
