One team fact

american football aka bobcats Road to Varsity 2018 We are relatively new in comparison to other Varsity teams, only being established in 2012, but this does not mean we are going to roll over. We are coming for the win and will fight every play of the game to the final whistle. This is evident in our training running up to Varsity as we are training three times a week and implementing new schemes to improve our game. After a relentless season there has been no break or slowing of pace: instead we have stepped up the aggression and intensity for the Varsity Trophy.

We are the only varsity team to have been created in the last 10 years!Abim, one of our freshers, once ate a whole pizza in three minutes 20 seconds and he can down a pint in 2 seconds...

BUCS finishing place (league and cup) There’s no cup, but we came 6th in the league this year.

Team highlight of the season The highlight of the season, though it may have been a loss, was our game against Southampton Stags. They are a team undefeated in our league who went onto championships and playoffs, results in our league included 72-0. We went away to their grounds after a tough start to the season and fought, leaving it all on the field. We came close to thew victory losing by a single touchdown after a tough fight of constant grit and determination. It was a sad loss but a highlight to the team as every member put their bodies on the line and fought for the man next to them achieving what was not expected of us.

men’s football Road to Varsity 2018 Following a well-deserved break after a successful season for BU Men’s Football 1st Team, the boys are looking forward to reuniting as a squad to face Southampton Solent. Our season was longer than expected, due to an extremely successful cup run, which saw us make the BUCS Trophy Final. After returning from the Easter break, some boys have already made their return to the Bournemouth University Men’s Saturday side in the Hayward League Division 1. Their involvement in this side is extremely important, as it gives some 1st team players the opportunity to train weekly and get competitive minutes under their belt ahead of the clash on the 9th May. Both the 1st and 2nd squads are waiting patiently for training to resume ahead of Varsity Day, as some of the players who featured in the 2017 clash have been sharing their experiences from last year, which is extremely exciting.

One team fact

Team highlight of the season Our BUCS Trophy cup run, which saw us finish runners-up, following defeat in Nottingham. On route to The Final, four impressive displays enabled BU to assert their authority in the competition. Following a comprehensive victory in their first match against Imperial College London, BU travelled to Hertfordshire. A professional away performance set-up a tie with League leaders Exeter. BU came away with an inspired win after extra-time to book their place in the semi-final. Things did not get any easier for BU, as they faced a Bristol side who had also completed the double over them in the League. Having failed to score against Bristol in the league, BU were unfortunate not to win the game in normal time. However, a courageous defensive display in extra-time meant the game would be decided on penalties. Including three successful spot kicks from BU centre-backs, Bournemouth were victorious and booked their place in the BUCS Trophy Final. The support over the 120 minutes was extremely important and vital to BU’s semi-final success.

12

An interesting fact about the Bournemouth University Men’s 1st Team involves five of the 1st Team players. The ‘EUS RTC’ is a title that can be used to refer to the car accident which occurred when four of the 1st Team players were on their way to the English Universities South Trials. The initial inconvenience involved 1st Team striker, Clive Makoni, who was unable to attend the Trials due to an exam taking place on the same day. With the moral support of defender TJ Akin; goalkeeper Tom Hayward, defender Michael Thompsett and midfielder Martin Schroeder left for Hertfordshire the day before the Trials. After spending the night together in a Travelodge Hotel, the boys made their way to the Trials the following morning. The boys were only a couple of minutes away from the venue when they took the wrong turn at a roundabout and went into the side of a relatively large Porsche vehicle. The boys were left stranded on the side of the Motorway, waiting patiently in the cold for the Recovery Vehicle to recover their damaged car. As the car was taken away, it was up to the boys to ensure that they were all together and able to make their way back to Bournemouth. Although neither of those selected were able to attend the EUS South Trials, they all returned to Bournemouth safely.

Men’s Futsal Road to Varsity 2018 Determined, Motivated and winners. 3 words to best describe our futsal team. After a successful season, with the first team being crowned champions of the Southern Premium. the players have been training hard to prepare for the challenge of facing Solent, whilst still completing the many deadlines at university.

Men’s Hockey Road to Varsity 2018

One team fact

Best men’s futsal programme. The men and women team train together on Thursdays. Interestingly this team has only lost 2 league games in the 3 years they played together..

Team highlight of the season

The first team will be wanting a win in this year’s varsity following last year’s narrow victory, losing would be very hard to take as Solent are also facing relegation in the league below. Whereas, the 2nd team will be looking to take home a huge win over Solent for another year running as Solent 2’s could not field a team this year in BUCS. Bournemouth 2s just missed promotion after finishing second this year, closely behind Plymouth 2s in 1st place. A big day for BUMHC to secure wins and end their season on a high!

team fact

The team highlight this season was winning the Southern Prem, coupled with an impressive cup run that saw them loose on penalities in the semi-finals.

We got relegated, but we’re still better than Solent, enough said!

BUCS finishing place (league and cup)

2 of the players; Leigh and Lorenzo made it on the BUCS National Futsal team

BUCS finishing place (league and cup)

1st Southern Prem & cup (semi-finals)

14

team highlight of the season The season got off to a good start for the first team with a win and a draw, to maintain their position in the top South Western League as well as a cup win against St Mary’s. A 3-2 win meant the next round; a face-off with against Cambridge University 1st Team, a strong opponent that managed to knock us out of the cup, however we learnt a lot from Cambridge and we became stronger as a team because of it. With both Cardiff and Bristol also looking to avoid relegation, the last game at home for Bournemouth 1st team was must win. A late goal from Cardiff meant relegation was a bitter taste to face, but next season will be a fight back to the top! Furthermore, the 2nd team will be searching for promotion as they continue to improve in their league. The best moment of the 2nd team’s season was a home 5-1 win against our neighbouring rivals in the league; Winchester 1st team. Great goals from Tom Meijer and Ben Perry secured the win leading to a high finishing position!

Men’s table tennis

men’s rugby Road to Varsity 2018 We all get together the night before for a pasta evening, get our carbo load on and just to bond as team. Then in the morning we will all meet up in SUBU for a coffee and a final chat before we head over to Chapel Gate. Most the senior boys will be soaking up the experience as it will be the last time they put on the blue and gold jersey, so an emotional day all round to be fair, but one we are looking forward to.

Team highlight of the season We won the league for the first time this season! Most amazing feeling ever! A lot of hard work went into it and showed true testament of the team to perform week in and week out!

One team fact Our favourite attire of clothing is our Budgie Smugglers! No matter the rig or how well-endowed (or not) the boys are, they are always wearing them for everyone to see!

BUCS finishing place (league and cup) Champions of the Western 2A League!

Road to Varsity 2018 The team are well prepared for Varsity this year having had a strong league campaign in which we finished 3rd, our highest ever position in the Western 1A division. We have a strong squad all round this year, including George Downing who has been playing professionally for the past 3 years in Sweden.

We know that Solent can upset anyone on the day, but the boys are confident that they can keep up their unbeaten run against them, having beaten them twice already in the league this season.

Team highlight of the season Beating former champions Exeter 14-3 in the opening game of the season.

One team fact Scholar George bet the team captains James Marshall and Luke Hunt a crate of beer each that he’d go unbeaten all season. He came close winning 31 out of 32, the one loss being to a Solent player! The captains still haven’t seen those crates turn up..

BUCS finishing place (league and cup) 3rd in Western 1A, last 16 in cup

netball Road to Varsity 2018 Despite a tough 17/18 season the netball girls are aiming to finish on a high at varsity day. With an unbeaten run against Solent we aim to continue our strong form from the end of the season. This year both 1sts and 2nds will be taking the court to gain TeamBU some valuable points! Both teams have had an extremely tough season both finishing 5th in their retrospective leagues (2A & 5A). However the toughness of the leagues shows with results as 1st team finished on the same points as 3rd & 4th and 2nd winning crucial games to escape relegation. We’re all buzzing for varsity day and can’t wait to be lead out by Captains Kate Reynolds & Holly Banks. We especially can’t wait to support other teams after with wa beverage in hand!!

Women’s Basketball Road to Varsity 2018 We have a strong team this year with lots of new faces. Women’s basketball is growing in popularity so we have had a second team this year. Our varsity squad will be a combination of both 1sts and 2nds and therefore we have our biggest team to date for the varsity game. Our training has been consistent and is still on going

to prepare for our play off final, and so we are continuing to train hard which will show on the day. We have some new plays and dynamics which we will be utilising when we play Solent. We’re hoping to get our 3rd win and maintain the 100% winning record we hold against Solent this season!

Team highlight of the season Winning the league and reaching premiership promotion play offs.

women’s hockey Road to Varsity 2018 The hockey girls are very excited for varsity day this year as we are ready to come back and win after a disappointing loss last year. The girls have been continuing with S&C sessions in order to keep up our fitness and are doing extra work outside sessions in order to be in the best condition on the day.

Team highlight of the season Making it to the semi-finals of the cup this year was a big achievement for us as and allowed us to prove to ourselves that we could perform well against some very good teams.

women’s Rowing

Women’s Football Road to Varsity 2018 Following a very up and down season, and a hard loss at last year’s varsity, returning members of BULFC are looking to beat Solent in what will be some of their last games for the team. Being a team of predominately freshers, we have come into our own and established a winning way after dealing with a series of losses midway through the season. After finishing 4th in the Western 1A, the team should be immensely proud of the performances given this season despite some of the results. We have been training hard and working to decipher Solent’s strengths and we’re confident we can give a battle

BUCS finishing place (league and cup)

Team highlight of the season The highlight of the season would be when we played Gloucester at Chapel Gate on the last game of the season and we needed to win that game in order to avoid relegation. We won the game 4-0 with a cheeky back-heeled goal from Beckie Davies to secure the 3 points and goals needed to finish above UWE.

Road to Varsity 2018 BUBC had an intense training camp in Nottingham on the second week of Easter holidays, so all the athletes are fitter than ever. Camp was held in preparation for BUCS regatta, which is coming up the weekend before Varsity day, 5th-7th of May. All of the crews are expecting to do well and this confidence will carry out to Varsity day. Bournemouth has been successful with beating Solent the past few years and the whole squad is ready to repeat the history!

Team highlight of the season

One team fact

One team fact BUBC has had more members and crews than ever before, with all freshers and seniors merging together in a new squad system, and men and women training together on land and water. This has made the club bigger and stronger than ever, and everyone has helped each other in exceed themselves. The club has become like a big family for all the members with never ending socials, sober and not-so-sober, trips and endless hours of training together.

As many the head races this winter were cancelled due to the surprisingly cold and snowy winter, the highlight of the season so far has been Head of The River. Both men’s and women’s races were held on the same weekend, and BUBC raced 2 women’s eights and 3 men’s eights, giving most of our novices their first experience of racing in the tough conditions of the Thames.

We are know by other teams in the league as the team with backflip Beckie

Looking for a student house?

Women’s rugby Road to Varsity 2018 Every year once the season has finished we begin our 7’s season training, which is a lot of hard work and fitness for all the girls. After keeping up with some of the top teams in BUCS all season and playing Cambridge 1st in the Cup we are more than prepared and ready for Varsity Day.

Team highlight of the season Winning against Bath 1st on our Team Takeover week was a definite highlight with a great build up and a great supporting crowd and atmosphere. We also had the pleasure of travelling to Cambridge to play the ladies first team. Although we lost it was the most fun we have had playing a game this season and great to hear off Cambridge that we were their toughest opponents.

One team fact

• Wide range of BU-approved housing

In one of our first games of the season we 3/4 of our team had gastroenteritis and spent the majority of the game throwing up on the side of the pitch!! But we still played the whole game and love each other vomit and all…

Simon Prentice Back in February, Bournemouth University Weightlifting Captain Simon Prentice came 1st in the men’s 105kg weight class at the ‘Bristol Open 2. Since then: – All lifts were made, with PBs across the board.

He snatched 115kg and Clean and Jerked 150kg for a 265kg total, which qualifies Simon for the Britsih u23s in the 105kg class, held on September 15th. His 265kg total was also the best total he’s achieved in competition, 16kg more than his 2nd best competition total. This was also the 2nd biggest total out of all lifters on the day, only beaten by Commonwealth Games Athlete Rhodri West.

– Snatch: 105, 110, 115 (PB lift) #TeamBU – Clean and Jerk: 135, 145, 150 (PB lift) – 2nd biggest lifts of the competition only beaten by Commonwealth Games athlete Rhodri West in the weight class above. In a practice run before BUCS on April 21st/22nd, Simon Prentice competed at the ‘Bristol Open 2’ at ‘myGYM’ in Bristol in the men’s 105kg weight class. Coached by Noorin Gulam on the day, he achieved 6/6 lifts for the first time, and in the process made new personal bests.

Sarah Shazhad Sarah Shahzad is a Masters student of Visual Effects at BU. She has been practicing archery for a little over 4 years, starting when she began her bacherlors and never looking back. Every year Archery at BUCS gets bigger each time with more than 300 archers shooting at two different venues on a single weekend to qualify for the big finals.

Having improved significantly from her last year at BUCS, Sarah is still aiming to improve further in order to secure a place on the podium. The finals are nothing like the qualifiers and a single wrong arrow can make all the difference. She was training hard in the short time she had between competitions and finals.

Only the top 30% in each category move forward to the next stage. Sarah managed to place first on the Southern qualifiers and second on the overall seeding for experienced female Barebow archers.

competing whilst at university Daniel Wilson has studying at Bournemouth University since September, and in that time he has competed at the World Championships and at 2 major World cups.

Back in January he was in Miami at another World Cup. He only returned to Bournemouth back in March following a large training block in Cadiz, Spain.

He is BU’s very own windsurfing athlete.

The Summer programme began this month and brings Daniel into Palma de Mallorca.

As part of his first year here at BU, he’s been travelling. In the first term he was competing out in Japan at his first senior World Championships where he finished 57th. It was arguably not his best result but Wilson remained happy as it was his first senior World Championships.

The southern qualifiers took place on the 24th of February in Crawley. The match was a Portsmouth round where she scored a massive 543/600 and beating her own competition personal best.

He said: “it has been amazing to do all of this my first year and stay on top of my studies”. “Big thanks to Bournemouth university for supporting whilst I have been competing.”

He then returned to Japan for the Gamagori World Cup and finished 12th.

a history of #TeamBU

and after varsity? Want to know what fixtures Team BU has left? Find out below...

Wednesday, 16 May 2018: Men’s Cricket(League): Bournemouth 1st VS Canterbury CC 1st Wednesday, 23 May 2018: Women’s Cricket(League): Bournemouth 1st VS Cardiff 1st AND Men’s Cricket(League): Cardiff Met 1st VS Bournemouth 1st Sunday, 27 May 2018: Men’s Cricket(League): Bournemouth 1st VS Cardiff 1st Back in 2016, SportBU created a new identity for Performance Sport to unite all of its athletes. Working alongside the universities marketing department the TeamBU crest was born. Its creation focused around the vision to integrate part of the university’s history as well as unite all athletes under one recognisable brand. When looking into the history of BU, its educational beginnings can be traced back to the early 20th century with the foundation of Bournemouth Municipal College. In 1992 the institution became a university and was granted a coat of arms by the College of Arms.

To reflect the power and ferocity people have come to expect from BU’s athletes and competitive sports teams there was a clear association with the dragon on the coat of arms which represents Dorset. As a result the dragon was embedded in the TeamBU identity to reflect this and also relate to the heritage of the county in which the university sits.

Thursday, 31 May 2018: Women’s Cricket(League): Cardiff Met 1st VS Bournemouth 1st Friday, 01 June 2018: Men’s Cricket(League): Bournemouth 1st VS Exeter 1st

The new TeamBU crest is now worn on all Performance Sport kit when student athletes represent the university each week in the British University & College Sport (BUCS) Leagues and Cup competitions.

team bu is currently 23rd of the bucs table, with 1318 (at time of print). though this is not the final position 32
