FEATURES On January 20th 2017, the world sat and watched as Donald Trump took over from Barack Obama in assuming control of the Oval Office. After awkward exchanges between the two and a tour through the White House, Trump would proceed to perform his inauguration speech to a very large crowd (depending on what sources you trust). The central theme of his monologue was ‘America First!’ But 12 months since he became the most powerful man in the world, Donald Trump and his team have not stopped obsessing over other nations. In particular, the USA’s struggle with North Korea has largely escalated due to Trump’s tantrums. From insisting that his nuclear button was ‘bigger’ than Kim Jong Un’s, to his claim that the Asian country will be met with ‘fire and fury’, the West has been wary of the start of a nuclear war for so long now that said threat is no longer that frightening.

A YEAR OF

TRUMP

by Oliver Sirrell

The Trump administration’s links with Russia have not gone away either. The 45th President’s sacking of James Comey fuelled speculation of collusion with Putin and his government, while Michael Flynn’s, Jared Kushner’s and Donald Trump Junior’s links with Russia haven’t eased the President’s position either. One of Trump’s first actions in office was to prohibit travel for people from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya, but this executive order was rejected by federal courts. A new version of the order was also subsequently blocked, but the Supreme Court finally granted Trump his long-desired travel ban in December 2017. Disputes with Great Britain, the invention of Nambia and an increasing contempt for Mexico have also been key moments in Trump’s first 365 days.

George Washington University student Eli Caveiro-Frankel, aged 20, believes Trump’s foreign policy has “ruined international confidence in the United States.” The International Affairs student added “the American political system has been more chaotic than in recent memory ever since the Trump administration has begun” and “Trump has been highly inactive and been absent in governing.” Perhaps Trump’s global ineptitudes are distractions for his failings back at home. Trump has not successfully repealed Obama Care in the way he initially desired, and his lax attitudes towards the mass shooting in Las Vegas and the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas seemed to show a President out of his depth. Trump’s approval rating is currently at 38% according to Gallup.com. Despite his successful introduction of a new tax bill, unemployment levels being at their lowest in seven years and record highs on the global stock markets, the President’s accumulation has not dramatically increased. Having started on 45% this time last year, Trump’s total has hovered around the 37% mark for the majority of his first year in charge. To put Trump’s approval rating into context, this score is 11 points below what President Obama was tallying in the second January of his first term and 15 points behind the average approval rating for all Presidents since 1938. However, Trump’s shock election came courtesy of a wave of support from elderly, white men and his base have largely stuck by him in his first year. But for his opponents, like fellow GWU student Beatrice Mount from California, there is still a lingering sense of disenchantment after his electoral success.

6

“Last year, I was extremely frustrated with the outcome of the election. I still am. I thought that I could try to be empathetic towards those who voted for him at first. But I doubt that I will ever be able to do that. “Nothing Trump has done surprised me He was a racist, sexist, nationalist piece of reality TV garbage before the election and will continue to be afterwards. America’s reactions to him have also ceased to surprise me. “Our country has a long history of the same behaviour, so it makes sense that we continue to excuse his actions.” Trump seemed to slip through the white supremacist riots in Charlottesville in August last year. By failing to condemn Virginia’s neo-Nazi’s, the President appeared to have some sympathy for the

most reprehensible group in American society. “The only way to move forward properly in America is through acknowledgement of this history and support of the most marginalized voices. At least something more than accepting Trump as the new norm.” But for all his political inadequacies, perhaps the greatest legacy of Trump’s first year in charge is that he is the new norm, as Caveiro-Frankel testifies.

What to EXPECT IN

2017 was quite a year! Article 50 triggered the formal beginning of the Brexit negotiations, a variety of sex scandals hit Hollywood like a shockwave and Donald Trump threw the global world order into a spiral. It wasn’t all bad however: a new Star Wars film was released and viral videos like the infamous BBC footage where a dad was interrupted mid-interview by his kids warmed our hearts. 2018 is set to be another year of shocks…. Here’s a few predictions: Brexit negotiations began when Theresa May triggered Article 50, the withdrawal clause. Going into 2018 European Union leaders authorised the move to the second stage of the negotiations, which discusses the future relationship of the UK with the European Union. The deadline for all of these negotiations is set for March 2019, so it should be the case that by the end of this year most of the terms of Britain’s divorce from the EU should be decided.

Across the pond it is set to be interesting politically too, with Donald Trump already shaking North Korea’s nest. Just a week into 2018 Trump has already told Kim Jong Un that his nuclear button is bigger than theirs, further angering the North Korean dictator. However, the North and South Koreans have since opened a hotline between the two nations, who are technically still at war, so could this be the year of a cooling in relations?

Alongside Brexit we could see the steady decline of Theresa May, with support from within her own party hanging on through very thin ice. For her to be ousted from power by the end of 2018 would not be a surprise to anyone in Westminster. If this does happen of course, this would give the perfect opportunity for the rise of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The most anticipated event of the upcoming year has to be the royal wedding. On the 19th May 2018 Meghan Markle, an American actress best know for her role in Suits, will marry Prince Harry at St Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle. With many famous faces in attendance it will be the place to be, despite it clashing with the scheduled FA Cup final!

In music and film in 2018, there are lots of releases to look forward to. Fall Out Boy, Don Broco and Justin Timberlake all have albums set to be released within the first quarter of this year; exciting fans around the world. The artists who are rumoured to be developing an album include Kanye West and a joint release between Beyoncé and Jay-Z. In the film world, there is set to be a new instalment of the Harry Potter spin off Fantastic Beasts starring Eddie Redmayne. There is also the final of the Maze Runner trilogy coming in the next year concluding

the fast-paced series. Other notable film releases include a new Mamma Mia and a Star Wars spin off - Solo: A Star Wars Story. Overall, 2018 is set to be a year to remember. These are just a few observation and predictions of what’s to come, but we shall see what will happen. If its anything like last year, then there will plenty to write about for news channels around the world.

FEATURES But republicans believe that just because they are from a wealthy family and part of the royal bloodline, they shouldn’t be treated any differently to anybody else. Republicanism (in the UK) refers to a political movement that seeks to replace the monarchy with a republic. They believe that the monarchy is expensive. Figures released from Buckingham Palace state that the royal family costs 62p for every citizen of the United Kingdom. Last year’s figure was 58p - the increase in tax is said to being spent on reducing a huge backlog of repairs to royal palaces.

DISPELLING THE

MYTHS ABOUT

THE ROYALS Meghan Markle is an actress from America, who is famous for being on the TV show “Suits”. Royal enthusiasts feel that Prince Harry and William are more modest and are showing the modern side of the royal family. This event is crossing the invisible line between the royals and the people. Every time the media report on the royal family, there are always negative reactions claiming that the Windsor family are no longer relevant today. One fifth of the country believes we shouldn’t have a royal family. However, there are many reasons why the royal family can be beneficial for the United Kingdom. The royals have traditionally been seen to help bring a sense of community and morality to Great Britain, especially during the Queen’s coronation after the war. Through the Queen’s coronation and subsequent jubilees there have been

Last month, it was announced that Prince Harry had proposed to his American girlfriend Meghan Markle. There was constant coverage. The media buzzed because this is the first time a member of the royal family is marrying someone not from the same country. street parties where neighbours have celebrated together. There is a feeling of being part of something positive. The whole country joined as one and celebrated the royal family in milestone events. When the war ended, children had lost their fathers, wives lost their husbands and there was a morbid feeling around the country. The royals were able to bring back the spark of happiness. When Prince William married Kate Middleton, there was an undeniable excitement everywhere you went. This is especially needed in the current sociopolitical climate where families are struggling on small amounts of money, food prices have gone up, and all we hear about on the news is Brexit. They help to give the country a sense of hope.

The royal household say that the money given to them is spent wisely and properly. The sovereign grant is money that comes from the treasury, which is from the British taxpayers and is given to the royal family to carry out official duties. In a recent report from Buckingham Palace, the Sovereign Grant was announced as £43 million. This is not as expensive as speculation is made out to be. Some republicans believe that the figure is £334 million a year, which is nearly ten times as much.

shop, with merchandise of the royal family and other iconic ornaments. Visitors love them because they show happiness and stability, and represent a sense of magic. The UK has a constitutional monarchy because it is seen as stable form of government for England. The Queen is the head of state and she helps to separate the official duties of the royals from politics. As a constitutional monarch she must remain neutral. Since Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952, television was introduced, meaning more families could see the Queen from the comfort of their home, which made them feel like family. The Queen has been the monarch for 65 years and has been the longest serving monarch ever. Few individuals are still working at the age of 91. Therefore, she is seen as an inspirational female figure. The royal family will always be adored by some, and disliked or even hated by others, but they will always remain an important part of British culture.

When ordinary people are struggling to live on a small budget, and many people do not have enough money for food and accommodation, this spending is seen to be grossly unfair. However, the royal family attracts millions of tourists to London every year. They are iconic figureheads known across the world because the UK is one of the few remaining countries with a monarchy. In a recent survey by Brand Finance, the royal family’s attraction generated £550 million through tourism in the last year alone. Visitors from other countries love coming to the county to try and see the Queen through the gates of Buckingham Palace. Most places in the UK have a stereotypical souvenir

by Harvey Gough Black Mirror recently returned to our screens with another six episodes, courtesy of Netflix. The modern day anthology tells a new story with each episode, delving into the dark side of technology and the effect it can have on us. This fourth series provides wΩuch as ‘Star Trek’, an episode following one woman’s attempts to survive postapocalypse and even a more light-hearted episode about dating in a technological era. As always with Black Mirror, everyone will have their own favourite episodes, depending on personal tastes. The show pushes further into the extremes of its own limits than ever before. Some episodes feel almost hopeful and optimistic (almost unheard of within the world of ‘Black Mirror’). However, as if to balance this out, it also contains some of the darkest episodes in its history. The season’s first episode ‘USS Callister’ is easily one of the most enjoyable stories in the show’s history. The episode, which from the trailers looked clichéd and unoriginal, turned out to be one of the most interesting episodes in the show’s run so far, with several unexpected twists along the way. It also has some of the series’ funniest and darkest moments to date. This episode also showed off the series’ increased budget since having moved to Netflix, with fantastic CGI effects. This is a welcome change, with some of the visual effects in the earlier seasons’ occasionally somewhat fake and low-budget. However, whilst no episode of ‘Black Mirror’ in its now 19-episode run has been bad, a

couple this season did seem slightly below par. Personally, the episode ‘Arkangel’, focusing on a parent attempting to protect her daughter, felt somewhat anti-climactic, as did the episode ‘Metalhead’. However, I have seen other lists place these within the best episodes of the season, so clearly it really is a matter of personal opinion. At times, some episodes also do seem to re-tread old ground, particularly regarding some of the technology the show examines. Whilst the stories it presents surrounding these technologies are wonderfully unique, it would be nice to see more original ideas, as this is when Black Mirror is at its best. Finally, it is worth mentioning the stellar cast this season, all of whom are fantastic. For example, this season features actors such as Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) and Letitia Wright (Set to appear in ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Ready Player One’). Overall, Black Mirror season 4 is perhaps the show’s strongest season to date. A higher budget allows for an increasingly excellent cast and vastly improved visual effects, whilst retaining the show’s signature storytelling and style. With some of the darkest episodes of the series’ run, Black Mirror still doesn’t fail to feed that hole inside of you with even more despair and misery. Just the way we like it… political debate up until the votes were counted. Luke explained why the band felt it was important to show their support and

ENTERTAINMENT First of all, congratulations on your new album ‘Safe in Sound’, what was the inspiration behind the record? To sum up inspiration for the whole album is a tough one as it came from so many different places. The title for the record came from the idea of music being a form of escapism. Music is a thing that makes people happy or makes people sad and it certainly does that for us and we just wanted to give that to people. Is there any track that is particularly special to yourself? I love Had Enough. I think the opening line is one of my favourite lyrics that Mike’s ever written. ‘I hate everyone that I meet’ just sums up how I feel about a lot of the world sometimes when you’re having one of those days. And that just links back round to the album title. A lot of people with music think they have to be happy all the time but no one’s happy all the time. Reaching number 8 in the UK charts is a massive achievement, you guys must be happy with that!

LOWER THAN

ATLANTIS After releasing their album last year, Lower Than Atlantis are now looking forward to their upcoming tour. Dec Hart, bassist, caught up with Nerve.

Yeah, it’s crazy. On the day that we found out where the record had charted, must have been a Friday morning, me and Eddie were driving to the LTA studios for practise or something, and Eddies car broke down on the side of the road and it was pissing it down with rain and we thought if we don’t get a good chart position on the side of the road we might as well jump in front of a truck! When we later found out we charted at 8 we were like cool, we can count our dues for that one.

for the record but were still working on it at the time. It didn’t really get finished until the eleventh hour, however we wouldn’t usually work like that. Every album uses a different approach to keep it interesting. I think that’s the best way to keep everything fresh and exciting. In 2017 you did an 8-date tour in the UK, how was it to be touring in the UK again? It was good. We try not to tour the UK too much as we oversaturated ourselves. This year we’ve got a 22-date tour, not in the major market cities but in places we haven’t been in 5 or 6 years and some that we’ve never been to at all. It’s going to be sick to get out to all these places we’ve never been to before. This tour is about getting back to our roots. Like we’re going to be playing songs from all our records which we’ve never done on a headline tour before. We’re usually focused on what we’re promoting but its exciting to be playing tracks we haven’t played in ages. Within the rock genre there is a trend of changing music towards the charts, but you guys have really stayed true to your style. Would you say there is a trend? Yeah but there’s nothing wrong with that. I measure things in my life on happiness, not money or fame. If it doesn’t make me happy I won’t do it. With our fans it’s a two-way thing. If people at shows aren’t having a good time, then we don’t either.

by James Inge

How long did it take to make the record? We put out the track ‘Work for it’ at Reading and Leeds 2016 and used that as a preview

Fortnite is a free third person shooter survival game, developed and published by Epic Games. The game is rapidly gaining popularity, and is now the 8th most played game in the world. The rules of the game are simple: one hundred players jump from the battle bus and land on a lonely island to fight to the death, but only one can survive and be crowned victor. Like every other battle royale type game, there are different types of weapons on the island for the people to pick up and use to fight each other. What separates Fortnite from its competitors is that it allows you to build. You can gather resources, such as wood, brick and metal and use it to create your own fort to protect yourself from the enemies. However, the other players are not the only thing you have to worry about. After a certain amount of time, a deadly storm circle forms around the island and as time progresses it starts shrinking, forcing people to come close to each other and

As a huge fan of the Hunger Games franchise, I feel like Fortnite offers a game version of the iconic novel’s sinister game. Trying out this game was insane fun for me because it presents an environment so similar to that in the books, it felt like I was a part of it. GIG REVIews

TRIPLE COOKED at the old firestation

By Harry Mottram

Our writers have been busy recently attending the hottest gigs. Here’s our look back to the end of 2017 and the hottest events of the festive period:

It’s safe to say that Royal Blood had a fantastic 2017 with their number 1 album ‘How Did We Get So Dark’. From playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in the summer to supporting their heroes Queens of the Stone Age on tour in America, they’ve really been living the Rock and Roll dream. As if that wasn’t enough, they then spent the last part of the year headlining their own sold-out tour in Europe.

royal blood

After their excellent support acts At the Drive and Black Honey (a band which played at our 2017 Summer Ball) the band came on stage and the standing crowd erupted into a huge mosh pit. Bodies and drinks flying around everywhere. I was suddenly glad for my seated ticket. The band opened the set with their first single from ‘How Did We Get So Dark’: ‘Lights Out’. It was an excellent opener, not only because the song was hugely popular but also because the band got to put their brilliant lighting to good use during the guitar solo. Throughout the rest of the night, the band ran through tracks from both their new album and their first, bringing out banging tunes like ‘Little Monster’ and ‘Figure it Out’. They ended the night with one of their most popular tracks, ‘Out of the Black’, as part of their encore. It was certainly one of the best gigs I’d ever been to. Watching them, not only do you get fantastic music, but you also get a real sense of comradery and friendship between Mike Kerr (singer and bassist) and Ben Thatcher (drummer).

emerging talent”, a fair statement as its unique blend of disco and house music was complimented by its groovy décor and assisted even further by students who dressed for the occasion to create the funkinfluenced spectacle for both avid music and art appreciators.

The neon lit dance floor and artwork combined well with the music to create a funky atmosphere, and whilst the night began with a somewhat scarce dance floor, it was ultimately a top draw night for the open-minded party goer. Triple Cooked is described as a “movement of

THE ICE BALL

at the old firestation By Ananthi Parekh

Reminiscing back to December, the Ice Ball was the perfect accumulation of festive cheer. From the free Baileys cocktails to the ski-lodge themed photo booth the Old Fire Station was fully decorated to be a winter wonderland. The entrance to the club was decorated with a red carpet, and the interior was full of fake snow, white décor and fancy lights. The upstairs, however, was even more enchanting, in both rooms there were small but sweet photo opportunities: one being

an elaborate ski scene with a professional photographer as well as a small fireplace in the other room. The music was an odd mix of popular favourites and up to date chart hits, however as the night went on the choice of music became quite erratic, with High School Musical and Frozen both featuring, leaving most students both amused and confused. My favourite aspect of the night was the people themselves, all smartly dressed in cocktail dresses and suits. The Ice Ball Was a great end to the term.

FASHION

THE CONTROVERSY

BEHIND BEAUTY

BLOGGERS

Beauty Bloggers Zoella & Tanya Burr Many young women today aspire to look like Rihanna, Jennifer Lawrence or Kylie Jenner (to name a few), and are turning to beauty bloggers to help them achieve their desired look. We took a look at the impact this is having on the youth… The power of the internet means people have a wealth of beauty knowledge at their fingertips. In seconds, young girls can access a video tutorial on how to contour, or come across a blog post on the best way to do your eyebrows. As a result of this, beauty bloggers such as Zoella and Tanya Burr are deemed as role models to young girls, from wanting to buy the exact beauty products they recommend to following their makeup tutorials step by step. Lindsey Rivera (@BTSmakeup on Twitter), a full-time makeup artist, says: “I have noticed more and more people are showing me photos of bloggers and/or influencers as their inspiration as opposed to celebrities.” BuzzMyVideos’ Online Video Barometer revealed that 85% of UK consumers surveyed - aged between 16 and 45 - would trust a review by a YouTuber over any other method. The beauty industry has been changed

forever as people no longer have to rely on a qualified professional when seeking advice about new beauty products. They simply see what a blogger thinks of it and base their opinion from there, without caring that the blogger may not have any level of authority when it comes to reviewing products as for them it is often just a hobby. According to Immediate Future, this is precisely why it makes sense that almost 60% of fashion and beauty brands have implemented an influencer-marketing strategy. Becky Provines (@lilacbunnybeaut on Twitter), a full-time beauty blogger, says: “Just because a blogger leaves a good review, doesn’t always mean it’s honest. Lots of bloggers will not give actual honest reviews through fear of not getting any more ‘freebies’, which is a shame.” It is a scary thought that the young people of our society are potentially being lied to

23

by people who are supposedly their role models. At the end of the day for the people who blog as a career, it is their way of living; it is where they get their income and if by reviewing a product in a positive way earns them (more) money, they often will do it, despite their ‘opinion’ not being true. “Via affiliated links, where you buy through the bloggers link, the bloggers can actually make money from your purchase, like a commission. young girls to feel bad about themselves if they don’t fit in with the crowd. “It can make people feel unworthy if they can’t afford the newest ‘it’ product”, says Lindsey. Sarah Trademark, a beauty blogger, says: “I follow a lot of well-known bloggers and you do often find yourself comparing your life to theirs and wanting everything they have and thinking, ‘why haven’t I got that lipstick in all 23 shades’.” It is clear to see that self-esteem is an issue among youth as a result of the pressure that beauty bloggers have enforced even further. Lindsey at Behind the Scenes Makeup says:

The importance of money now involved in blogging means people may get misled. Young people are buying products that may have been falsely reviewed, all because it has been recommended by an influencer they trust.

“I’ve noticed an increase in plastic surgery / outpatient procedures, such as lip injections, in younger people and it seems like everyone is striving for this specific, unattainable look.”

The pressure the youth of today face in order to look their best and have all the upto-date beauty products is extortionate.

With the amount of beauty bloggers on the internet being on the rise, it appears these ‘role models’ may well be one of the causes behind the confidence issues in young people.

It could be argued that the rise of beauty bloggers is to blame for this and is causing

trends for 2018

Pastel Colours Think of pale lavender, icy blue and creamy yellow. Soft colours, combined with a more masculine, tailored fit, make for interesting contrast that blurs the stereotypical lines of ‘girly’ and ‘boyish’. An all-pastel look is for the brave. If you feel intimidated by that, you can always start by piling on the pastel gradually.

Checks

New year, new trends, new you? With these style picks you can easily transform your outdated wardrobe into a collection of clothes your friends will envy (and beg to borrow).

Yes, checks – and no, you don’t have to own anything from Burberry in order to pull this look off. In fact, the more retro the better, so dive into the world of vintage clothing with this one and you may find the trendiest piece of 2018 for a fiver! Just make sure to only have the checked pattern in a statement item of clothing and keep your outfit simple.

And you won’t have to be spending a month’s rent on a pair of Versace trousers either – many of these trends will be hitting your favourite high street shops very soon, as the retailers follow the example set by the iconic high fashion brands.

Sheer Fabric Those mesh tops you bought for summer ball thinking you’d never wear them again? Well, that day is here! Sheer fabric is making a comeback in the chicest way possible. Transparency doesn’t have to equal vulgar if you make sure to layer a

pretty top or bra underneath. You can also get more experimental and try on trousers with sheer patches on the knees or tops with sheer arms.

Jumpsuits This has to be my favourite of the bunch – it’s a top and trousers sewed together, the best 2-for-1 deal you can ask for (well, right after Domino’s Two for Tuesday offer). It’s also a fantastic way to rock pastel colours if you’re into that, or you can go with an even bolder, brighter colour scheme. There’s no arguing that the classic jumpsuit is the number one item for anyone who wants to feel cozy while still looking fresh and stylish.

Glitzy Shoes Unleash your inner Cinderella and head to the streets with over-the-top boots (that are, believe it or not, made for walking). Glitter-covered heels are something you will be seeing a lot when we approach spring time and perhaps you could whip out that old pair of Primark ballerinas and create shoe art that’ll make others whisper, ‘Wow, I wonder who designed those?’.

FASHION Hydration First things first, are you drinking your eight glasses of water a day? Using skin care products may help soften your skin but after all, we are 70% water and your hydration levels are dictating your skin condition. Without adequate hydration levels, your skin will appear dull, and fine lines, wrinkles and pores will appear exaggerated as the face shrinks into its tightest position. Drinking your two litres of water a day is one of the best thing you can do for your complexion.

Cold temperatures, steaming hot showers, harsh winds and central heating - all things that you cannot escape during winter and that don’t make your skin soft and radiant. Tightness, dryness, flaking, chapping, itchiness - we’ve all been there and wondered whether having soft, glowing skin in the winter is even possible? We took a mission to find products to both hydrate and protect the skin from the freezing cold winds.

SPF Protection

Always take off your make up before bed. We cannot stress enough how important this is. Avoid using skin wipes at all costs as they are incredibly drying. Instead, use face wash that will gently get rid of the dirt, excess oils and won’t leave your face with dry/itchy patches. Our favourites are Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser, (£15) and La RochePosay’s Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel (£12).

We cannot stress the importance of wearing SPF every day even if it’s cloudy and raining. UV light is always present and will cause irreversible damage if you are not protecting your skin. SPF should always be the last step in your skincare routine and the first in your makeup. When buying sunscreen products look for one that contains both UVA (longwave rays) and UVB (short-ray waves) and go no lower than SPF30 to fully protect against sunburn, pigmentation, dark spots and fight against premature aging. Eucerin’s Face Sun Creme (£15) provides great protection for all skin types.

Cleansing

Lip Balm

When choosing the right winter cleansing product keep in mind that wind and cold temperatures will leave your skin drier than normal so you will need different product from the one that you use in the summer. For example, if you are using a gel cleanser, it would be a good idea to switch to a cream cleanser, which will leave your skin feeling less tight. You can try Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, (£7) or Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, (£10).

There is one thing that is worse than the combination of wind, long hair and lipgloss, and that is cold weather and chapped lips. The lip balm addiction rises in the winter and we have a few favorites that will help you beat the dry lips with SPF-packed formulas. If you prefer a clear lip balm for really dry lips that does the job Nivea Soothe & Protect Lip Balm SPF15 (£2) is the right choice. If you are searching for long lasting moisture Korres lip butter (£8) will bring the summer back as you can choose between pomegranate, mango, and quince. And last but not least if you like to add some color, Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm (£12) not only gives you immediate moisture but also comes in 12 vibrant shades.

a more emollient product. Look for one containing ceramides which lock moisture into your skin, and apply generously right after your quick shower when skin is still damp. Products like Nuxe Crème Fraiche Moisturising Cream, (£17), and Neutrogena Visibly Clear Oil-Free Moisturiser (£7) really do the job.

Moisturising Moisturising is a really important skin care routine step when the weather is cold. Put away your summer go-to moisturiser until the mercury rises – winter time demands

Valentine’s Day is

commercialised

nonsense

Everyday

Sources cite that the origins of Valentine’s Day lie in the ancient festival of “Lupercalia”, which took place on the 15th of February and included some extremely archaic forms of courtship.

single Valentine’s Day, which is absolutely outrageous. While Valentine’s Day initially had a slow start, one billion Valentine’s Day greeting cards circulate worldwide every year. What’s caused this immense growth?

However, the origins of Valentine’s Day stretch further back all the way to ancient Rome in 278 AD. St. Valentine’s execution occurred on the 14th of February 278 AD. Legend has it that Valentine wrote a love letter to his jailer’s daughter the night before his execution and signed it, “From Your Valentine”.

The over glamourisation of Valentine’s Day in film is one of the biggest culprits of perpetuating the need for ridiculously expensive gifts. Valentine’s Day preparation including gifts, trips, and anything romance related has made the industry a $20 Billion industry.

The Pope officially began Valentine’s Day in the 5th century as “St. Valentine’s Day”; yet, the day had nothing to do with love. Love was equated with Valentine’s Day much later in the Middle Ages when France and England noticed that Valentine’s Day fell on the same day that birds coincidentally happened to start mating. Thus, the romantic theme of Valentine’s Day was born. Now, while the origins of Valentine’s Day are speculative and still debated, one thing we can all agree on is that the 14th of February is the epitome of commercialised nonsense. St. Valentine wrote a love letter to let his lover know what she means to him, whereas we spend an average of £140 every

Companies have taken full advantage of this commercialisation too. Valentine’s Day themed chocolates, flowers, clothes, and decorations have a higher price mark up only because they have been re-packaged; most of the time there is no difference between the products inside. The commercialisation of Valentine’s Day can also lead to personal problems within romantic relationships. Many people have disagreements with their significant other because the gifts they exchanged might not have been extravagant enough or the day was not special enough. Love, like anything else, should be celebrated on a regular basis and not on just one day of the year.

are dating apps

racist? Dating apps such as Tinder and Grindr have transformed the dating scene into an infinite all-you-can-eat buffet. With the simple swipe of a thumb, we can easily choose exactly whoever wets our romantic appetite and discard anyone who doesn’t. May it be Blondes, Redheads, Brunettes, Black, Asian or Latina… whatever your flavour, dating apps let you have your fill. However, here lies the problem…instead of dating apps opening up horizons and introducing users to something new, they have only served to narrow preferences even further. No longer are we stepping into the dating scene with open minds, rather we’re are doing so with rigid criteria and the concrete idea of what our ‘type’ is – and god forbid we deviate from it. This obsession with stereotyping typecasting has unfortunately led to racism manifesting itself e.g.“I’ve always wanted to know what it would feel like to be with a Black guy” Unfortunately, over time dating apps have become hotbeds for racism, but of a much subtler kind. And the most common manifestation of said racism? So called ‘racial preferences.’ The idea of only being attracted to particular races or ‘types’ has become so wide-spread and accepted, people have finally given over to considering it a given of the online dating experience. This is crazy! If someone in real life said, “I wouldn’t date him because he’s Black,” we’d consider that person racist, so why is it seemingly okay online?

by Silva Chege

Decade-long studies by online dating platform OKCupid have found that when comes it to replies and interaction on their platform, the world of dating has become a racial hierarchy in which white members sit comfortably at the top and minority subgroups such as black women and SouthAsian men sit uncomfortably at the bottom. It’s important to note that racism on dating apps doesn’t operate in a mere vacuum, the discrimination on these platforms speak to wider societal issues and so easily filter into other areas of our lives too. For instance, as explored by journalist Emma Dabiri on her Channel 4 show Is Love Racist, stereotyping online naturally leads to stereotyping in job interviews and in the eyes of the law. I’m not arguing that people shouldn’t have preferences or particular tastes. After all, we are all free to love and date whomever we please. However, I would like to put the case forward that our choices shouldn’t be made on superficial ideas or stereotypes, but rather on commonalities and genuine chemistry. Ultimately, dating apps are extremely flawed. With a mere handful of photos to choose from and a strict character limit, apps have completely reduced the dating experience to the lowest common denominator – looks and nothing else. Instead of being seen as unique three-dimensional human beings, in the eyes of these apps we are all just pixels on a screen.

BE KIND TO EVERY KIND by the meat, dairy, egg and fish industries. Beautiful animals, and they all lose their lives in unimaginable conditions. Perhaps it could be that these shocking figures are purposefully hidden from us?

It doesn’t have to be. The amazing thing is that anyone can make the world a better place. How? Through the simple idea of being kind to everyone.

No matter the circumstances, no sentient being should lose their life regardless of what traditions may be or society seeks to conceal.

Mahatma Ghandi once said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

In Western culture it might be tradition to eat cows or chicken and in China dogs but what is the difference? An animal’s life is as important and irreplaceable to them, as ours is to us.

Recently there was a media uproar about the loss of five animals’ lives in a fire. However, the media fails to report on the over 150 billion animals killed in the world per year

by leaving them off of our plates - all animals want to live, regardless of what culture may try to make us believe, so let’s broaden our compassion to include all life forms. We all know the power of consumers. Supply and demand has more impact than we may think.

Pythagoras, who was born in 571 BC, quoted “as long as man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. He who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”

For this reason, the vegan movement is a social justice standpoint which seeks to minimise suffering towards all life forms and freedom and liberation for all.

The incredible thing is that we can all strive for a better world with no suffering and death and through starting this journey towards a kinder world, we must first look to our plates. If we open our eyes to every living being’s suffering and act with compassion to all, the world can be so much greater.

What better New Year’s resolution can you make than to be kind to others? In a time where atrocities are so commonplace, a world with less suffering with peace and harmony sounds all too surreal.

It is safe to say that in Western society whilst we may love dogs, we also eat pigs and wear cows which definitely doesn’t align with his philosophy.

ethical choice outside of personal interests. According to new data from GlobalData 2018, more people than ever are becoming vegan. The UK saw its number of vegans increase from 0.4% in 2014 to around 3% in 2017. Each vegan saves nearly 200 animal lives every year.

Let’s all begin the year thinking about how we can make it our responsibility to make a change, positively impacting animals lives

Challenge 22 is a great resource to try veganism for 22 days, with support and recipes to help along the way. Bournemouth University Reducetarian Society would love to welcome anyone who seeks a more compassionate and fairer world where no sentient being has to suffer. Small changes that we make ourselves pave the way for even bigger changes out there.

by Norina Maniscalco

When someone makes a dietary choice for their own self-interest, animals lose. Diets and health choices change like the direction of the wind. However, veganism should no longer be seen as a fad diet or a personal decision, as this in itself is forgetting the victims of our decisions. Instead, it is an

SPORT Anthony Joshua British Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua is aiming to become the undisputed king of his sport in 2018 and will be back in the ring in front of his adoring fans on March 31st, against WBO champion Joseph Parker.

Sporting CALENDAR

2018

Every other summer, football fans are left in a huge predicament as they consider what is left for them to enjoy in the close season, with no European Championships or World Cup to keep them occupied. 2017 was that year but not to worry, as 2018 is looking far more exciting with the World Cup returning in Russia on 14th June for what promises to be another month of enthralling football and entertainment and, fingers crossed, an England triumph… But, there’s plenty more to look forward to, with a wide range of sporting events around the corner.

The Olympic gold medallist had an incredible 2017 as he defeated former longreigning champion Wladimir Klitschko in spectacular fashion, knocking out the Ukrainian veteran in front of a packedout Wembley Stadium and in doing so, he added the WBA ‘Super’ belt to his alreadyacquired IBF title. Joshua ended the year with a 10th round TKO victory over Carlos Takam at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and the same venue will once again play host as the 28-year-old looks to add Parker’s WBO strap to his growing collection.

Haye vs Bellew 2 The much-anticipated rematch between bitter heavyweight rivals David Haye and Tony Bellew is set to take place on May 5th at the 02 Arena, but will these two finally settle their long-running beef? Haye pulled out of the scheduled rematch on December 17th due to a freak bicep injury and this was not the first-time injury had stopped him from stepping into the ring, as he pulled out of two proposed bouts with Tyson Fury back in 2013. ‘The Hayemaker’ is looking to rewrite the script after the ‘Bomber’ pulled off a shock, stoppage victory over the former undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion, with Haye snapping his Achilles tendon in the 6th round.

Premier League of Darts Think outrageous costumes, boisterous fans and eccentric walk-ons. Yes, the Premier League of Darts is back. The tournament, commencing on February 1st in Dublin, travels across Europe and features the top four players in the world coupled with six wildcard picks. World number one Michael Van Gerwen will be favourite to claim his third title in succession but is likely to face stiff competition from current world champion Rob Cross who beat the Dutch darting legend in December in an Alexandra Palace epic.

FA Cup Final 19th May is the date for your diaries, as it’s FA Cup final day. Wembley Stadium will of course host the oldest cup final in football and this time it is set to clash with the royal wedding. Holders Arsenal will not be there after they were knocked out in the third round by Championship side Nottingham Forest. We can expect many more giant killings before the May showpiece.

Wimbledon The 132nd Wimbledon tennis tournament will take place over two weeks between 2nd July and 15th July. British number one Andy Murray, who is currently out injured, is hoping to be fit for the All England Club while Swiss legend Roger Federer will be aiming to retain his title after his record 8th win last year.

MId-season

review

The Players:

The Manager:

The Cherries have one of the more unique squads in England’s top flight, with the likes of Marc Pugh, Simon Francis, Charlie Daniels and Harry Arter all joining Bournemouth in the lower reaches of the Football League Pyramid, and playing a key role in guiding Howe’s side to the Premier League. Along with the old guard, the permanent re-signing of Nathan Ake for a club record fee demonstrated Bournemouth’s willingness to spend big when needed, along with the arrivals of Asmir Begovic and Jermain Defoe.

Eddie Howe’s role at Bournemouth is, understandably, untouchable. The young manager has guided the Cherries through three promotions, from the very bottom of League Two to regular Premier League football. Despite constant rumours of a bigger job lined up in the future, Howe appears to remain committed to the Vitality Stadium for the foreseeable future.

Defoe’s season has unfortunately been stunted with injuries, after being ruled out for ten weeks after sustaining a nasty tackle in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal defeat to Chelsea. However, Begovic has earned regular game time and has impressed so far this season with some superb stops to earn points at crucial times. Nathan Ake has been nothing short of a revelation – his commitment to the shirt and constant desire to play at his best has made him a firm fan favourite at the Vitality, and the Dutchman shows experience beyond his years while leading from the back. He is certain to be many people’s favourite for the club’s player of the year come the end of the season. Another standout performer is Callum Wilson. The ex-Coventry striker has scored seven goals so far this season, with two assists, and his work-rate up front makes him a nightmare to defend against. Ryan Fraser deserves a mention, too. The Scotland international may be the smallest player in the Premier League, but he more than makes up for that with bundles of pace and skill, leading to two assists and four goals, making him another fan favourite.

41

Some questionable team selections have marred this season at points, but Howe’s attention to detail on the training ground really appears to be paying off now. The players work hard for him, and the crowd constantly sing his name both home and away – it really is a match made in heaven.

Rating: 7/10 Judging a season which could still go either way is incredibly difficult. The Cherries are far from safe from the threat of relegation, but the superb victory over Arsenal saw Bournemouth move four points clear of the drop zone. Home form is particularly important for any club wishing to remain in the Premier League, and the Cherries’ has been patchy at points but there have been positive signs in recent weeks that things could improve. The victory over Wenger’s side showed the passion and grit that Howe’s men have, and putting in similar performances should see Bournemouth earn a comfortable mid-table spot come May-time.

SPORT 4. Bournemouth 3-3 West Ham

5 OF THE

In a game full of twists and turns, the Cherries picked up a point against David Moyes’ Hammers right at the death.

BEST MATCHES

An early header from James Collins put the visitors in the lead, before Bournemouth fought back in front through Dan Gosling and Nathan Ake. Marko Arnautovic pounced on a slip from Asmir Begovic and then slotted home a rebound minutes after to put West Ham back in front, but the drama wasn’t over on the south coast. Deep into stoppage time, Callum Wilson appeared to use his arm to divert a looping cross into the back of the net, and referee Bobby Madley controversially awarded the goal.

3. Crystal Palace 2-2 Bournemouth

by Dan Davis

The Cherries were fortunate to leave Selhurst Park with a point back in December, when Begovic saved a stoppage time penalty to deny Roy Hodgson’s side all three points. Jermain Defoe put the Dorset club into the lead, after tucking home a well-worked corner routine. Luka Milivojevic smashed home a penalty to level, before Scott Dann tapped home at the back post to put the home side in front.

1. Bournemouth 2-1 Arsenal Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal arrived at the Vitality in the midst of a mini-crisis, with the future of Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez in the balance and anger from fans directed towards the management of the club.

Defoe looped home one of the best goals of the season, meeting a superb lofted delivery on the volley to equalise, before Milivojevic was denied by Begovic late on.

The Gunners took the lead through Hector Bellerin, but the Cherries fought back and picked up an important three points after second half goals from Callum Wilson and Jordon Ibe, the latter grabbing his first for the club.

5. Stoke 1-2 Bournemouth The key to staying in the Premier League is beating similar-placed teams, and the Cherries 2-1 away victory at Stoke was a key example of this.

2. Bournemouth 4-0 Huddersfield One of the most convincing performances from Eddie Howe’s side resulted in a 4-0 demolition of Huddersfield Town.

Early goals from Andrew Surman and Junior Stanislas got the Cherries off to the best possible start, before Howe’s side put in a gritty, defensive performance to cling on to the three points after Mame Biram Diouf’s second-half goal halved the deficit.

Callum Wilson’s hat-trick put the Cherries in cruise control, and Harry Arter also got on the score sheet to round off a superb, all-round Bournemouth performance.

SPORT The UK Open is likened to the FA Cup because of the accessibility it provides for players of all standards and abilities, and after failing to qualify at South Benfleet, Cross was persuaded to try his hand at qualification once more. It was this win in Norwich that an ever-modest Cross described as “sort of life changing”. After reaching the last 32 of the UK Open, only bowing out to world ranked number 1 Michael Van Gerwen in a 9-5 defeat, Cross decided to quit as an electrician and focus on darts full time. Having gained an automatic two-year tour card for 2017 and 2018, Cross played his first professional match in February 2017, earning £250. In the proceeding eleven months, Cross went from strength to strength, climbing the rankings after winning four Players Championships. The now world number 4 also made an impact on TV tournaments by reaching a final, a semi final and two quarter finals.

rob cross: Electrician to

world champion in 12 months

by Luke Hewitt

Back in February 2016, Rob Cross was dragged out of bed by his uncle, before driving the 170 miles from Hastings to Norwich to enter the final UK Open qualifier. This journey will now go down in infamy as the trip that turned Rob Cross from a pub player to world champion.

45

Before the 2018 World Championships had started, Cross had already earned £200,000 and came into his debut on the Ally Pally stage as the bookmakers’ fifth favourite. Cross winning the World Championships on his debut is a milestone but his route to lifting the trophy and the context of the final itself makes this story one that will go down in darting folklore. On his journey to history, Cross won thrice in last set shootouts. In the last 32 he beat Michael Smith 4-3 in a powerscoring master class. He then edged past Dimitri van den Bergh 5-4 in the quarter finals and reached the final after defeating reigning champion Michael Van Gerwen in a thrilling 6-5 victory, which some are claiming to be the best ever match seen at Alexandra Palace.

The 2018 World Championships was the final swansong for 16-time world champion and darts legend, Phil Taylor. In a final that seemed like it was the climax of a Hollywood film, either Taylor would be retiring holding the biggest trophy on offer in the sport, or the greatest of all time would be passing the torch to the heir of the darting throne. Many believed Cross had it in him to beat Taylor, but some felt the occasion would get to the new kid on the block with his first meeting against ‘The Power’ being in the legend’s last ever match and in the biggest game of the darting calendar. The former electrician, however, defied the expectation of the majority of darts fans by handing Taylor such a beating it reflected the Taylor of old, who would storm through any opponent that got in his way of silverware. It was a fitting end to the career of a man who revolutionised the sport. It was a bittersweet moment that saw many understand why Taylor decided to put his darts away for good, showing that he was not only leaving a legacy behind, but also leaving the sport in good hands. Although the final did revolve around Taylor throwing his last ever darts on stage, it also made a star out of the man who took home the trophy, placing his name in darting history as a world champion. In the manor he won the final (with a 140 checkout no less), it showed that Cross is a serious contender to knock the ever dominant Michael Van Gerwen off the top of the sport. It’s been a fantastic year for Cross, a story many have likened to the rise of Phil Taylor in his final year, as “the new Phil Taylor” may just have been discovered.
