s we come to the end of another hectic year, I wanted to give this last issue of the term a more festive tone! I am exceptionally proud of the content we have been able to output at the magazine and I hope you all share the sentiment with me. I feel the manner in which all of our writers have tackled the new formats and dealt with issues has been very professional and the transfer of new editors has been seamless! I have no doubts that the upcoming issues of 2022 will only continue to improve, I hope you all look forward to reading them just as much as I do.

With all the mushy stuff out of the way, I chose a theme for our end of year issue that I feel resonates perfectly with the spirit of Christmas. Storytelling! From the expletiveridden ‘Fairytale of New York’ to the huge library of Christmas tales and movies, it’s hard to escape storytelling during this festive time, and you won’t be able to hide from it here either. We’ve had some super interesting content submitted for this issue, so if you find yourself missing BU on your Christmas break, give this issue some love with a hot chocolate.

Potentially with some baileys but that bit isn’t mandatory, and if you’ve got some ideas for future content don’t hesitate to write it up and send it to one of our lovely editors! Have a very merry Christmas everyone, you deserve it. @SUBUBournemouth

WHAT IS SPIKING?

Spiking is when you put alcohol or drugs in a persons drink without them knowing. It can happen in either alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. This also includes, as seen more recently, injecting people with foreign substances without their permission.

TAKE MEAT OFF THE MENU

The number one way to reduce your environmental impact is by removing meat and dairy from your diet, so why not try a plant-based Christmas dinner this year? Even Lidl has a vegan Christmas selection; it’s easier than ever to get in the festive spirit without harming animals or the environment in the process.

RE-USE YOUR WRAPPING PAPER

Instead of buying new wrapping paper, use last year’s paper, and if you have any newspapers lying around, those work too. Try not to rip the paper off presents, and instead fold it up and keep it for next year.

TRAVEL BETTER

Keep environmental impact in mind when you plan your travel. Use public transport wherever possible, and car share with your family and friends. If it isn’t too far, use the trip as an excuse to wrap up warm and take a walk.

SAVE YOUR TREE

If you already have a fake tree, keep using it and make it last as long as possible. If you buy a real tree, check that the place you buy from has an FSC-certification logo, which shows that it’s been grown sustainably. When you’re done with your tree, find a Christmas tree recycling point local to you, and it’ll be shredded to be used in parks, on woodland paths, and as compost.

BUY YOUR PRESENTS LOCALLY OR ORDER IN ADVANCE

Check out local shops for Christmas presents, and if you need to order something, make sure you order early instead of choosing next day shipping. This means that your package will be sent alongside others and won’t be as environmentally damaging as paying extra for fast delivery. If you see something you want on Amazon, search up the retailer on Google, and buy from them directly instead.

Charity shops are a Christmas present goldmine; spend a day searching them, and you’ll find unique, cheap, and sustainable gifts.

They’ll also stock second-hand Christmas jumpers and decorations, so you can get festive guilt-free and without breaking the bank.

Turn off your tree lights which will save you money and will stop energy waste. If you hang lights on your house, turn them off during the day when it’s too light to see them and late at night when no one’s up to see them anyway.

GET CRAFTY

Get in the holiday spirit sustainably by using scrap paper to make snowflakes and paper chains. You can melt down old candles, add a wick to make new

ones, cut up used Christmas cards to make gift tags, and paint your old baubles.

DRINK WITH CONFIDENCE: If you’re comfortable doing so, you can collect a bottle spikey from SUBU reception. SUBU have also created some emergency contact cards for you to input your local emergency contacts. We’d suggest your house mate or a friend on your course. The Old Fire Station also have Drink With Confidence Kits. In each kit is a bottle spikey, a drink cover sticker, a drink testing strip and an emergency contact card.

SAFE TAXI SCHEME: SUBU have also generated the Safe Taxi Scheme, designed to get you home safe in an emergency. All you need to do is call 01202 556677, quote ‘999-safe taxi’ and provide your student number.

When the taxi arrives, the driver will check your student card to confirm your identity and then take you home. You will then be given a receipt for your journey. Within the next week someone from SUBU will then be in touch to arrange a time for you to settle your bill.

You must have your student card on you, without it you will not be able to use the scheme.

hristmas is well known for being a time of the year that brings people together. Last year, however, the holiday season was different to any other.

Everyone has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in different ways, with some suffering immensely from loss of time, opportunities and even lives. Christmas 2020 felt underwhelming due to the pandemic, which kept families separate, forced shops to shut, and limited opportunities to visit a Christmas market for a latenight mulled wine. were empty of people, and the mood during the festive period was low.

However, this year, we can finally celebrate the time of year that brings people together as there will be no restrictions on Christmas.

Once again, Bournemouth’s streets will be full of the usual hustle and bustle oHf eager shoppers ticking off their children’s Christmas lists and old friends catching up over a glass of Bailey’s. Not only will this year bring people together, but it will also allow for small businesses that were hugely affected by the

pandemic to get back on their feet. Market stalls, online gift companies and independent coffee shops will be hotspots, enabling people to make a profit they missed out on last holiday season.

Everyone’s festive spirit will be much higher for Christmas 2021, as the magic of Christmas is back and here to stay. Christmas lights, iceskating, late-night shopping and deluxe hot chocolates are once again on the agenda.

After a year of empty supermarket shelves and online meet ups on Zoom, it has been a long time coming.

England will be missing two vital and experienced players in Haughton and Bronze who are both injured and will miss out. Although 24-yearold Arsenal defender Williamson has taken over captain duties in Haughton’s absence, showing Wiegman’s trust in youthful players. This trust has been repaid in convincing wins and lots of goals.

The England Women’s squad have so much potential for doing great things if they carry on building their momentum into the tournament that they are well on course to qualify for. Goals are flowing freely for the

Lionesses with 26-yearold Beth Mead, making history in the game by becoming the first player to score a hattrick at Wembley against Northern Ireland.

This current England side seem to be taking everything into their stride and are proving to be strong in all areas of the pitch. Positivity is radiating off this squad and into their performances for the national team. The goal fests and high-quality performances are also drawing in the fans as attendance against the Northern Ireland Women's Team was an impressive 23,225.

England’s Women’s team have so far been flying through their group for the World Cup UEFA qualifiers. With high scoring wins against Latvia, Northern Ireland, Luxembourg and North Macedonia. These wins have also come without conceding a goal too, contributing to their place at the top of group D. England are almost halfway through the group but are yet to play Austria who follow them in the table and may prove a test for the Lionesses.

Being a home game will be an advantage for the Austrians, who have the potential to give them their toughest test yet.

I

t's set to be a defining month for Chris Billam Smith as he continues his quest for world honours going in 2022.

‘The Gentleman’ is scheduled to defend his European title, against an as yet unnamed opponent, on November 13th and a successful outing would see him edge one step closer to a world title shot.

The 31 year old has responded well since suffering the only defeat of his career back in July 2019. On that night, at the O2, he lost a razor thin split decision to Richard Riakporhe but has enjoyed a far more prosperous couple of years than his opponent.

secured thumping knockout victories over Craig Glover and Nathan Thorley before grinding out decisions against Vasil Ducar and Tommy McCarthy.

The win over, 18-2, McCarthy earned him the British, Commonwealth and European belts in what is a fast-growing collection.

It’s been four years of furious development since Billam Smith made his debut at the O2 Academy, Boscombe, against Russ Henshaw in September 2017. In that time the Bournemouth man has boxed in Wembley Arena, Leicester, Edinburgh, York Hall, Nottingham, Liverpool and, on November 13th, at the

Not only is Chris Billam Smith blessed with beautifully brutal power but the big danger lies in his intelligence. He’s an intelligent man in and out of the ring: possessing that patience and probing punches to rack up the rounds whilst also pouncing at the first sign of weakness. Looking ahead at potential match-ups for 2022 and an all British world title clash with Lawrence Okolie certainly gets the mouth watering. The gentleman needs to navigate his way past November 13th but, assuming he sails through it, then all eyes will be set on a world title showdown in the near future.

T

he uncertainty about the viability of the 72nd Ashes series is over, as England and Australia will finally lock horns at The Gabba on December 8th.

Plenty has been of the ultra-secure restrictions that are imposed in Australia, not least that the rules vary drastically in each state, which led many English cricketers to voice their concerns about the tour.

Having, essentially, lived in a biosecure bubble since May 2020 many felt a trip to Australia over Christmas, with all the stress and pressure that the Ashes brings with it, could prompt serious mental burnout.

The five match series commences in Brisbane on the 8th; Adelaide hosts the 16

second game from the 16th20th December; it’s a short trip down to Melbourne for the Boxing Day test; up to Sydney for fourth fixture between the 5th and 9th of January; and Perth hosts the final instalment of the 2021-22 Ashes commencing January 14th.

England, coached by Chris Silverwood, will be hoping to improve drastically on the last time they were down in Australia: a 4-0 drubbing back in 2017-18.

There is reasonable room for optimism for Joe Root’s men with Ben Stokes back in the test squad for the first time since March. England won’t want to put too much pressure on the 30 year old, absent through both injury and a break to look after his

mental health, but he has often looked the missing weapon in England’s arsenal since his absence.

It’ll be interesting to see where England go with the top order: Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, Zak Crawley, Dan Lawrence, Dawid Malan and Ollie Pope all vying for places in the batting line up. And it is that rich vein of talent that, perhaps, is causing the biggest headache for England’s hierarchy. Undoubtedly there is a plethora of quality but, it seems, none of them have quite managed to find that consistency that makes them a shoo-in.

The same argument can be made for who fills the slot as England’s fourth seamer: if you consider James Anderson, Sports

AT 72ND ASHES Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes as your top three then, again, you’ve got Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson and Craig Overton competing for just one position. Any one of those ten players (batters and bowlers) really needs to take it upon themselves to make their mark in these series and make that shirt their own.

Australia, meanwhile, have had a mixed run of form with a 4-1 capitulation, in August, at the hands of Bangladesh not ideal preparation for cricket’s biggest fixture. Prior to that Australia lost to India in a four match test series (21, the same margin by which India currently lead England in that ongoing saga). The storyline since the Ashes was last contested, in 2019, is perhaps that of Marnus Sports

Labuschagne’s emergence on the international scene.

The 27 year old, born in South Africa, has established himself as one of the finest batsmen of the past couple years - the leading Test runscorer in 2019. Furthermore his character shone through, thanks to Amazon’s The Test documentary, with Labuschagne endearing himself as one of the most likeable cricketers in the sport.

Of course, when England and Australia set to war in December, likeability counts for nothing. Friendliness goes out of the window with the two rival nations competing for the smallest of trophies that comes with the largest of pride. To the right is England's Super 12 Group.

STORYTELLING THROUGH FASHION Written by; ISABEL MCKENNA

I

f you haven’t seen the film, Andy Sachs is wearing a simple blue knitted jumper which Miranda Priestly explains is not just a blue jumper that Andy’s chosen to wear, to prove she’s too serious to care about fashion or how she looks. In fact, Miranda explains the shade of blue - Cerulean - was first coined by Oscar de la Renta in 2002, from which it made its way into many other designers collections. It then trickled down into regular high street shops. Miranda Priestly demonstrated that each piece of clothing designed has a purpose and tells a story.

When thinking about you personally, there is a reason you wear the clothes you buy, and most of the time it’s not simply because you like them.

If that was the case, you’d buy every single piece of clothing you’ve ever looked at and thought “that’s nice”. What differentiates the clothes you like from the clothes you buy is the story you’re telling about yourself - consciously or subconsciously.

"MRS MAY HAS TAUGHT US THAT FASHION AND POLITICS ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE"

The story someone is trying to tell through their fashion can be used to their advantage. One person I believe understands power this is the controversial political figure, Theresa May. The former Prime Minister is not only an interesting character because of her political manoeuvres and questionable dance moves, but also because of her fashion choices. On many occasions we’ve seen the self confessed fashion lover be ridiculed in the tabloids because of her outfits, with her shoe choice letting her down the most. But, I do feel that on other occasions Mrs May has taught us that fashion and politics are not mutually exclusive, contrary to popular belief.

Despite the funny fashion faux pas, I do believe each outfit is tactical and gives May a chance to express a side of her that she wouldn’t normally be able to, given

her job status. My favourite tactical choice from Theresa would be the “lucky” Vivienne Westwood suit, which initially she was mocked for due to the similarities to Johnny Rotten’s suit worn in a 1977 performance. However, this suit has has become iconic, not only because of the person who inspired May to purchase the suit (Cara Delevingne), but also due to the story she aims to tell when wearing it. This suit, costing approximately £1200, has become the signifier that Theresa May is about to drop a political bombshell, and is known by many as her “lucky suit”. This specific fashion choice gives May opportunity to tell her colleagues and constituents she is still confident, determined and trendy despite her job title.

I think is a great message for women of all ages today.

There are many ways to tell a story. It can be done through film, pictures, writing, art, and through fashion. From a designers choice of patters, fabric and colours, to the person who buys their work, a story is told. A story about who the designer is, and who their customer is. Culture, heritage, identity, personality, and experiences are used to tell a story of who we are, whether that’s fashion fanatics, stylists, designers or simply just wearers of apparel.

Her popular ideas have caught the attention of a wide group of females across the world and her designs have made history by breaking down the patriarchal barriers in women’s fashion and becoming a symbol of freedom which still impacts people to this day.

ashion is like a revolution – it only enters our lives after it has gone down in the streets’, Coco Chanel once said this but what did she actually mean?

We all know the name Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, one of the biggest names in fashion, she completely transformed the female fashion landscape and gave women the ability to say goodbye to corsets and hello to comfort. However, how much do you know about her life story or how she became the success she is known for today?

Well, she was born in August 1883 in Western France where she was raised in an orphanage run by nuns who taught her how to sew, sparking a crucial skill that she would use throughout her lifetime. Coco had a gift to analyse the constantly changing fashion trends in her everyday life, making her a big influence on what people chose to wear. This made her a style icon.

Her timeless designs were popular for being simple yet sophisticated and contrasted the traditional image of women’s style during the time; her main goal was to make clothes which were more comfortable for women.

Coco’s journey to building her fashion empire began when she Lifestyle

received help from two men: Etienne Balsan and Arthur “Boy” Capel in Paris. She started out by selling hats but soon expanded her talent to other items of clothing.

Coco’s journey to building her fashion empire began when she received help from two men: Etienne Balsan and Arthur “Boy” Capel in Paris. She started out by selling hats but soon expanded her talent to other items of clothing.

Her first success story was a dress she designed from an old jersey which received a lot of attention and even had people asking her to make one for them too. Coco then realised she had already caught women’s eyes with her designs and admitted this may have been the hit to start off her success. She explained, ‘My fortune is built on that old jersey that I’d put on because it was cold in Deauville’.

In her lifetime, Coco had a boyfriend, the Duke of Westminster, who would wear men’s everyday clothing but also a lot of sportswear. Chanel saw this as an opportunity to develop women’s fashion by combining masculinity and femininity, showing how iconic her ideas are as she wasn’t afraid to take inspiration from the more comfortable looks men wore and then go on to

style them. She understood how uncomfortable womenswear was at the time and how that needed to change. She wanted to encourage women to feel less pressurised to wear traditional corsets or long skirts and instead feel more freedom and less formal in what they wore.

Chanel’s most famous designs are the legendary ‘Chanel Tweed Suit’ which symbolised classiness but also liberation for women around the world and of course the ‘Little Black Dress’ which was revolutionary for breaking the norms of black representing sadness and instead showing how chic it can be.

Narrative Approaches to Christmas Movies

T

he most festive time of the year is fast approaching and I’m sure, like myself, you’ll all be taking some time over the Christmas break to see loved ones, eat tons of rubbish and watch an unholy amount of films.

The go to choice of film undoubtedly varies from household to household though, as I’m sure some people would rather bingewatch all the Harry Potter films than watch a magical snowman be serenaded for far too long. Personally, I’d stick on the exceptionally festive movie ‘Die Hard’ which I find weird because it’s not a ‘typically’ Christmassy story. When I think Christmas I imagine snow, family, presents, Santa etc. So why have Christmas movies deviated so far from these stereotypes over the years? Let’s discuss, or at the very least, let me talk at you for the next few hundred words.

In the early days of cinema, movies hadn’t matured enough yet to be able to tackle hardhitting topics. Narratives were typically very linear and technology hadn’t been sufficiently incorporated to allow for extraordinary Michael

Bay-esque cinematics. I noticed a couple of trends from the post-world war era, unsurprisingly, a lot of directors opted for a narrative with a soldier as lead returning home to find love during the Christmas holidays.

The earlier approaches to Christmas movies tended to be a lot more family oriented and less ‘artistic’, showcasing an easy to follow, easy to understand and easy to enjoy narrative. Yet, a little further down the line, in accordance with the surge in Western movies, a handful of ‘interesting’ Christmas. John Fords 1948 hit Christmas-Western retelling of the three king’s story, ‘3 Godfathers’, was certainly an exciting attempt at changing up the style of Christmas movies.

However, to me it seems like an attempt to capitalise on a now long -dead trend and ‘3 Godfathers’ has fallen out of the Christmas movie rotation.

So long, cowboys *insert sleigh bell jingle here*.

Between the 80s and 90s, lays the golden era of Christmas movies, in my humble opinion. We have timeless classics such as; ‘Santa Claus: The Movie’, ‘A Christmas Story’, ‘Die

Hard’, ‘Home Alone’ and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’. Though there’s still the incorporation of a heavily festive tone, like with the fairly blatant Christmassy Christmas movie, ‘A Christmas Story’, we start to see a more rapid emergence of artistic writing. ‘Home Alone’ for example, is a lot of people’s favourite Christmas film and though there is a strong Christmas theme with set design and time-period choice, the movie is actually a 103-minute showcase of a sadistic child’s decision to dabble in attempted murder. But pop off Kevin, you’ve saved Christmas.

After the turn of the century, the rise in comedy films influenced A LOT of Christmas films, some that I would even consider as classics. With the advancement in VFX and the hindsight of trial and error, we now have such masterpieces as; ‘Elf ’, ‘The Polar Express’ (which, by the way, is also a horror movie) and ‘The Grinch’.

We have so many choices now and all I can really say is, whatever you do decide to put on at Christmas.

Please, just make sure it isn’t a Western. Feliz Navidad.

une: Long awaited, Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ poses as an immensely well shot and directed two-and-a-half-hour-long trailer. Yet another starstudded cast fails to live up to expectations and it has been joked about online that Zendaya, who was advertised to have a leading role in the movie, looks as though she is filming an illusive perfume ad. Regardless, the visuals are 28

notably awe-inspiring, which surprised me personally because I didn’t think much could be done with a planet made of… sand. An interesting narrative tackling themes of; politics, family and giant worms.

ETER NALS Eternals: The latest instalment to the ever-

Designed by: JOSHUA BUCK expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fails to hit the mark. Currently, it boasts the not so impressive medal of WORST rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes, with a still generous rating of 47%. The plot is interesting enough and the performances from the star-studded cast continued to maintain my attention, but we’re left with a very forgettable villain and several plot-holes. All in all, if you’re a fan of ‘MARVEL’ and want to keep up to date with the storyline, it’s worth a watch but don’t expect an Avenger’s level experience... and still stay after the credits.

That’s probably the best bit.

If you’re interested in an action-packed storyline and beautiful visuals: this game is for you.

his dark and mystical storytelling mixes the life of modern day 60’s obsessed fashion designer Eloise who quickly finds her life intertwined with the 60’s singer known as Sandy. To begin with we see Eloise experience the luxurious lifestyle Sandy enjoyed and, overtime, more secrets are revealed as Eloise tumbles down a twisted rabbit hole, tormented by the demons of Sandy’s past.

The self described ‘psychosexual’ horror, is certainly as outrageous a script as is described. With stand-out performances by rising star ‘Anya Taylor-Joy’ and ‘Matt Smith’, Edgar Wright’s ‘Last Night in Soho’ is a refreshing take on 2021 cinema, with a beautiful mix of tone and approach to cinematography.
