Welcome to the very first Sports and Societies Festival! What’s the sitch!? A week celebrating and showcasing some of the amazing sports teams, societies and activities that we have on offer for you at Bournemouth University. Whilst I was studying, being involved in a society (the BU Falcons Cheerleading Team) and taking part in other things like LEGGIT with our RAG team, made my experience a thousand times better than it would have been if I had just chosen to focus on my degree. The memories and friendships made through getting involved in these different things will stay with me forever, not to mention the array of transferable skills I developed, and you can develop to make you more employable! If anyone asked me for one piece of advice whilst at University, it would be to get involved in as much as you can. What can you expect? Each day has different things going on, from showcases to give-it-a-go days that all aim to encourage you to try something new, and let you know that it’s not too late to get involved in some of the amazing things we have to offer! Why is Sports and Societies Festival happening in February? Freshers’ may be over, but all of these activities have been put in place nicely to fit in with our Refreshers Fair, which is on Thursday 9th, and is an opportunity for you to sign up to some of the activities on offer, helping to give you the full University experience. See something that interests you? Give it a go, then sign up for more at Refreshers Fair!

I love being a part of a society since it gives me a chance to meet people outside of my course and feel like a greater part of my university. When I first moved to Bournemouth, it was really nice to be able to hang out with people who share the same interests as me. There are so many different societies here as well, so there’s something for everyone.

I have loved playing volleyball and beach volleyball since I started the sport back in 2011! At the university the best part is being involved in a group that is more like a family as we spend so much time together training to hopefully go out there and win titles for the university. Being able to study and train full time in a place like Bournemouth just adds to great journey as I meet more and more people along the way who also enjoy the sport.

Lacrosse has always been a passion of mine and BU gives me the opportunity to play lacrosse in a social and competitive environment. We train at least 3 times a week which gives me the chance to hang out with friends at the same time as keeping fit and healthy. Its great being part of the squad and really makes me feel part of something!

I enjoy playing for the netball team at Bournemouth University because it has allowed me to meet friends I will have for life. Not only has it provided me with great memories on and off the court, it has also made sure I have down time away from my Uni work. Representing my University at netball is something I will always be proud of and take away as one of the best parts of my uni experience.
