WHAT IS COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING? Community Volunteering is made up of on-campus and off-campus projects that benefit both BU and the local community; these can vary from 5 minutes to running a long-term event or project! Community Volunteering is where you are expected to dedicate your ‘time’ to people in charities and organisations, for example, tea and singing with Alzheimer’s patience’s, litter picking on the beach, or conservation work in the countryside. If you want to help run these great events and have something great to put on your CV, then a Community Volunteer Leadership position could be the perfect role for you!

• Prepared to recruit student community volunteers, and Green Taskforce members, to help run on campus events, and attend volunteering events in the Bournemouth and Dorset community. • Prepared to fill in some paperwork!!! For all events that you run, there will be some paperwork involved, mainly noting who has attended your event, so that we can keep a total of how many student volunteer hours have been done over the year.
WHAT IS THE GREEN TASK FORCE? The SUBU Green Task Force is made up of students who are passionate and engaged in making a change to the sustainability and the green impact the Students Union and BU have on the wider community. You will have an ethos for wanting to encourage all BU students to question every aspect of their life, as to how they can live it in a more sustainable way, during their time as a BU Student, and in the future, when they go on to graduate.

What can you expect from SUBU in the way of support?
Media & events officer
• Initial Leadership Training – this will be a half-day event to help you understand the leadership role • Risk Assessment Training – this will be a half day event in Term 1, to help you understand risk assessment so that you can run your events safely. • LEADERSHIP AWARD SCHEME – workshops are available throughout the year, to help you improve your leadership skills. For more information about the Leadership Award Scheme, just ask the SUBU Community Team. • The Community Team in SUBU will be your main point of contact for help and support with any of your events, campaigns and volunteering. Every event, campaign or volunteering session should be discussed with the SUBU Community Team to ensure the necessary risk assessments etc. have been completed and you’re getting all the support you need.
Vice Chair
• The full-time officers will be supportive of your events, campaigns and volunteering sessions, and will be happy to help if you would like them to – just pop up and see them on Floor 1 of the Student Centre at Talbot Campus! • Team bonding/training session at a convenient time • Regular leadership training throughout the year as well as specific skills training where appropriate/needed. • Goal setting and objectives at the beginning of the year • Termly meetings with SUBU Community Team to identify training/development requirements • On-going ad hoc support where needed

ALL ABOUT THE ROLES UP FOR GRABS‌ Chairs
ELECTED ROLES
The Chair is an elected Part-Time Officer role and is responsible for overseeing and leading your respective Volunteering or Green Task Force Leadership Teams. You are elected into this role as you sit on the Community Council which is a student representative body of all extracurricular activities at BU. As a Part-Time Officer on the Community Council, it would be your responsibility to keep the council in the loop on what Community Volunteering/Green Task Force are doing and take part in or organise campaigns/events with the help of the Community Executives and SUBU, to promote extra-curricular Community Volunteering/Green Taskforce activities on Talbot and Lansdowne Campus. (Note that any high level volunteering/Green Taskforce issues can be referred by the Community Council on to the Exec Council for discussion.) As Chair, you are responsible for chairing all leadership team meetings. You will receive training to help you achieve all of this, and you will have an amazing Leadership team behind you, made up of student volunteers and the full support of SUBU Staff in the Community Team.
Community Volunteer Team Chair The Community Volunteer Chair is expected to host the SUBU Volunteer Fair (October), the SUBU Refreshers Fair – SUBU Volunteer Stand (first week of February) and National Student Volunteer Week (Usually in February). and is expected to organise and run on campus volunteering and community campaigns.
Green Task Force Team Chair The Green Task Force Chair is expected to attend the NUS Student Sustainability Summit (usually at the beginning of November), and is expected to organise and run Go Green Week and support other on campus campaigns such as Fairtrade Fortnight (late February) and to run at least one green campaign or event during both semesters, and to promote annual Earth Day.
Skills needed: The Chair will need to attend all Leadership team meetings, so a flexible and adaptable person is a must. As Chair, you will also be expected to attend as many events, and campaigns as possible, that have been organised by your Leadership Team.
Vice Chairs
APPOINTED ROLES
Community Volunteering vice chair Green Task Force vice chair The role of the Vice Chair will be to support the Chair, and the rest of the leadership team. This position entails a variety of things - from scheduling meetings to organising Leadership Team socials. You will be responsible for sending invitations and collecting apologies for meetings, as well as being responsible for minutes and circulating them to the team. The Vice Chair will be the main point of contact via Email along with the Chair and will need to have extensive knowledge of all events hosted by their team. It is also the Vice Chair’s responsibility to collect data for the weekly Volunteering and Community newsletter or Green Taskforce newsletter, to ensure all things are adequately advertised.
Skills needed: You must be an effective communicator and be able to lead and coordinate meetings. The Vice Chair will need to attend all Leadership team meetings, so a flexible and adaptable person is a must!
Media & Events Officer
APPOINTED ROLES
Community Volunteering media & events officer Green Task Force media & events officer In this role you are expected to encourage students to get involved with volunteering in the community. You will also be responsible for liaising with the rest of the Leadership Team to plan community volunteering events on and off campus, and to market and advertise them to students. You must be pro-active in getting information from the rest of the Leadership Team in order to effectively co-ordinate and market the year’s volunteering events. You will also be responsible for working closely with the Communications Assistant in the SUBU Community Team, in order to tell students about forthcoming events, and to call event volunteers to action, and celebrate the success of events afterwards. The Media & Events Officer needs to have a passion for working with charities and organisations in the Bournemouth and Dorset community. The Media & Events Officer is responsible marketing a range of volunteering events that are held locally. These will include the SUBU Volunteer Fair on campus, in October, and National Student Volunteer Week (events on and off campus) in February. You will also be expected to boost the reputation of students volunteering in the community and promote all the great things that student volunteers do for local charities and organisations. You will be expected to work with the SUBU Community Team. You must have a good knowledge of Social Media to share key information and updates with the SUBU Communications Assistant about student volunteers and charities and organisations, via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, snapchat, etc.
Skills needed: The Media & Events officer needs to have or want to improve on the following transferable skills: organisation and event planning, communication and marketing, time management. You will need to be highly organised, and good at planning & marketing events. knowledgeable in using social media, in order to reach students. It is essential that you are a competent communicator, who can seek out information that is appropriate for the audience. You will need to be a pro-active, approachable and smiley.
COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER LEADER ROLES APPOINTED ROLES
SUBU Community Volunteering Project Leader As a Community Volunteer Project Leader you will work in teams of two in the same role, and will together be responsible for the complete co-ordination of the student volunteers you will be leading, liaising with your organisation or charity, advertising the event on the SUBU Volunteering webpage, liaising with the SUBU Comms Assistant to help advertise your event on appropriate social media, managing a small budget for your project, and bidding for extra funding if your project goes well, and recruitment of student volunteers for your project. You will be held to account by the SUBU Community Team as to where and how this money is spent in the best interests of the projects. You will be liaising with external organisations, students and staff, so an effective communicator is a must. The success of each project is entirely down to the commitment of the Project Leaders.

As a Green Task Force Project Leader you will have the same responsibilities as a SUBU Volunteering Leader. The Task Force is still in its infancy, and so as yet has no pre-set projects. If you are interested in leading a project, please contact the SUBU Community Team on the details above.

All members of the Volunteering and Green Taskforce Leadership Teams are responsible for helping to promote other events alongside other leaders! You will be expected to make yourself available for meetings and promotion outside of your specific role.
Lansdowne officer
APPOINTED ROLES
Community Volunteering lansdowne officer Green Task Force lansdowne officer As the Lansdowne Officer it is preferred that you are a Lansdowne student, this is because the role is focussed on Lansdowne and we would like a member of the committee who is familiar with the environment and needs of Lansdowne students. Primarily as this role is new, the Lansdowne Officer will need to research what it is that Lansdowne students need i.e. small events or big events? The successful candidate will need to engage with halls of residence to create a sense of community on Lansdowne. The Lansdowne Officer will need to work closely with the rest of the Leadership team. You will need to be assertive; occasionally you may need to remind the Leadership Team that there is life outside of Talbot! You will be expected to promote, and support meetings on Lansdowne. You will be expected to work with the Lansdowne Council to ensure they are aware of Volunteering and Green Taskforce events for Lansdowne students and halls to make sure it is accessible to everyone.
Skills needed: Skilled Communicator, Team player, comfortable working remotely from the committee, pro-active and committed to Lansdowne student volunteering and Green Taskforce events, friendly and confident, comfortable approaching and chatting with students.
