What can you tell us about BUFF? BUFF not only provide some of the most popular socials at BU, you can also get qualified as a sky diver using highly qualified instructors at the Army Parachute Association. We subsidise transport and also offer a range of benefits to experienced jumpers. What are you looking forward to this year? To seeing membership grow with new people going that step further than the standard "bucket list" Tandem Sky Dive. Advise for students joining a club? Use the experience of being at Uni to do something new or challenging that they may not have had the opportunity to access before. What’s your favourite thing about Bournemouth? The diversity and liberal attitudes of the people who live and study here, and of course the incredible beaches and night life. BUFF are holding an info event for potential and experienced jumpers in Marconi LT at 6pm on Wednesday 9th October to learn what they have to offer this year.

dedicated SUBU volunteers helped collect a massive 1.5 tonnes and over £1100 for local foodbanks. The Big Feed, a large SUBU-led volunteering food drive competition on Wednesday 25th September, urged 1st year students to compete in teams at supermarkets across Dorset to collect as many food donations as possible. Across 7 supermarkets, students collected 1494kg of food donations, which in layman terms, nearly equates to the weight of an average car. Additionally, £1113.34 was also raised from customer donations and contributions by supermarkets. All of this money will be used to buy further food for the Bournemouth, Poole & Kinson Foodbanks. The aim of The Big Feed was to provide extra resources for the area’s local Foodbanks, who are experiencing a sharp rise in demand. Among the 375 other Foodbanks coordinated by the Trussell Trust, the national food donation charity who helped coordinate the event, Bournemouth has fed the 8th largest number of people in the UK. Karrabo, 18, from the winning team, hoped they had helped improve the perception of students. "We’ve killed two bird with one stone. We’ve shown the local community that this University does go out of our way and we’ve gone to areas not used to fresher’s coming along and doing something so wonderful."
NOMINATIONS FOR SUBU ELECTIONS With nominations closing on Friday 11th, there are just a few days left to put yourself forward to run in the SUBU Student Council Elections
O
ne of the essential roles of SUBU is to listen and represent the student body. Alongside Student Reps, the online ideas submission process (subu.org.uk/ideas) and the token box in the Student Shop, we rely on elected student representatives to become the eyes and ears of the students, and help shout about their experience. Cue, the Student Council Elections. We’re electing the new team of Part - time Officers to populate three of our four representative councils: Activities Council, Lansdowne Council, and Welfare Council. Run slightly separately is the Education Council, which is made up of twice-elected Student Reps called School Reps. School Reps represent groups of courses from each academic school and are elected separately by that School. Each council has a number of roles, all geared at representing specific groups of students, from sports clubs to student parents, health & social care students to LGBT students, postgraduate business students to those passionate about the environment.

Being elected means you could find yourself accompanying the Full-time Officers to meetings at the top University level, running events and campaigns on and off campus and with SUBU’s support, taking control of activity within your remit. The reasons to run are endless, including adding valuable experience to your CV, learning management, leadership and responsibility skills and creating long-lasting friendships in the process. The most important thing though - you’ll get to improve the BU experience for 18,000 students. After nominations close, the elections will run from the 23rd - 25th October, where you’ll be able to campaign across campus to secure people’s votes. If you have any questions about the elections, email supresident@bournemouth.ac.uk or about the Education Council, email suvpeducation@bournemouth.ac.uk
Interested in running?
Head online (subu.org.uk/elections) for descriptions of each role and to fill in a nomination form (or in the SUBU Office on Talbot or Lansdowne campus). You have until 5pm on 11th October to submit your nomination.

IS A DEGREE ENOUGH?
Your President Murray discusses the value of extra-curricular activities at University
G
oing to University can be the best experience of your life, but it’s also one of the most expensive. Students not only pay £9000 tuition fees, but they also miss out on full-time work for up to 4 years while studying. Plus the reality is, a degree may no longer be enough in the current economic climate, and to make this huge investment worthwhile, the importance of extra-curricular activities is bigger than ever. With the increasing number of graduates, the UK job market is becoming more competitive. Similarly, the introduction of MOOCS – where students can get their degree online for free means the HE sector is becoming increasingly focused on providing more than just a degree. This is where the Students’ Union can play an invaluable role. Research by Futuretrack (2012) found graduates who took part in extra-curricular activities were less likely to be unemployed, and more likely to secure a graduate job than those that didn’t. Employers place great value on such activities as a means of demonstrating desirable characteristics such as teamwork and leadership, and are increasingly looking for students with great place-

ment experience, globally transferable skills, and Research found evidence to show they go graduates who took the extra mile over other part in extragraduates. curricular activities Engaging with activwere less likely to be ities provides students unemployed with competitive skills and unique life experiences necessary for future careers that could never be obtained through an online degree, and they do so at a fraction of the real-world cost. The leadership skills gained from being President of a society, or the confidence demonstrated through hitchhiking to Prague for charity as part of a Rag event or the professionalism learnt through representing fellow students in an elected role all add extra value to your CV. Obviously, using your time at University to study your course is essential, but so is making your story unique to employers – so grab those opportunities while you can.

Light night brightens up Bournemouth
In collaboration with the BFX Festival and part of the Arts by the Sea Festival, BU students took part in a interactive, improvised art display in Bournemouth. On Saturday 28th September, the guerilla style show saw huge, customisable animations projected on buildings in Holdenhurst Road, and the Horseshoe Common underpass (opposite Cameo) lit up with 1000s of magnetised LED ‘throwies’ (above).
