LGBT PRESIDENT

What can students expect from LGBT this year?

Our aim is to create a proper community within University for LGBT students (with straight students welcome too of course).

We intend to branch out and get involved in the local community with volunteering and other activities. We will also be having regular socials such as nights out in the triangle, quiz nights and daytime events What are you looking forward to this year?

I am looking forward to, with equal dread, the challenges of third year as well as the prospect of launching my career.

How did you first get involved with LGBT? I first got involved in my first year going to socials throughout the year, I decided to become part of the committee as I felt I could contribute to the society and push it to do a wider range of activities rather than just nights out.

What’s your favourite thing about Bournemouth?

The beaches!

ive BU students are challenging themselves to run the Great South Run on 27th October to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. The decision to brace the 10 mile run comes as a sign of support for a colleague of one student who was diagnosed with the disorder whilst on placement. The group have set the ambitious target of £1000, with every donation to be hugely appreciated to reach their goal.

unday 27th October sees SUBU’s own Nerve Radio host the National Student Radio Chart Show. Broadcast on student stations up and down the country, Nerve’s own presenters will be introducing the Student Radio Chart’s Top 10 biggest tracks in Student Clubs that week, and a rundown of the Top 10 tracks students are listening to by unsigned bands. It’s the only chart representing what students are really listening to and Nerve can’t wait to put their unique spin on the Student Radio institution. Don’t miss out! Despite receiving a record number of nominees for this year’s Part-time Officer roles, what stops more students engaging in Union elections?

T

his year is a mammoth one for SUBU. With the introduction of the four Student Councils, we have set ourselves the massive task of electing 40 student officers over a three day period. From Wednesday (23rd October) you will be able to vote for a variety of roles from an Environmental officer to a Lansdowne Socials and Activities officer.

So far we’ve done amazingly well. With a record 41 nominations submitted by the end of the nomination period, we couldn’t have been more thrilled to have students engaging with the democratic processes at Bournemouth University.

But is this enough students? When you take into consideration that around 14,000 BU students are eligible to vote and run, 41 candidates throwing their hat into the ring amounts to only 0.3% of the BU population.

Interestingly, in a recent poll we asked students if they would ever consider running in the elections. 13% of you said ‘Yes’, and taken representatively, that’s over 1800 students. So what stopped the other 1755 of you from contemplating, to committing to run? And most importantly, what more can SUBU do to get you engaged?

According to research by NUS, those least likely to be involved included; males, those over 25 years of age, EU citizens and part-time students. Furthermore, over half of students involved in elections first became involved prior to attending university, and many tried to continue with this work even while attending university.

Other universities have discovered different reasons too. From "It’s just a popularity contest" to "There’s no point, you’ll never change anything" to even "I won’t win without a big campaign team.

These are all understandable concerns and it’s natural to be apprehensive about running. elections can often seem scary or a lot of hard work, but it’s what SUBU is here to help support you with.

Whether it’s helping candidates with time management or training them to effectively campaign and talk to students, we recognise we have a job to do to get more of you involved

Your VP Lansdowne Sophie introduces how SUBU are helping student parents at BU

A

s it’s National Parents Week this week, we’re using the opportunity to explore some of the ways SUBU can encourage and reach out to student parents - a group particularly close to my heart.

In the past three months alone, we’ve had over 800 students with dependants register with the SUBU website, but as you may expect, certain barriers exist for student parents.

According to research by the National Union Students (NUS), 77% of student parents felt it wasn’t easy to get involved in large parts of university life. In the same report, student parents admitted feeling guilty about the time spent studying limiting time available to spend with their children.

Add that to a reported annual child care cost of up to £4576 for children under two on top of tuition fees, and life as a student parent can be tricky business.

Nationally, priorities reported for student parents were a child-friendly attitude and more child-care support. And knowing we needed to find out more, I carried out some research into how student parents at BU feel. In response, a new area of the SUBU website is now dedicated completely to student parents, with information on everything you’d want

We hope, whoever this individual is, will bring first-hand experience to all of our plans to make life at BU better for students with children. Finally, to try and combat some of the negatives of balancing study time with family time, we’ve been bringing toys, movies, tea and coffee to monthly events on Talbot Campus, where students can bring their kids to meet with SUBU and other student parents. It turns out this is a great way to find some baby sitters too!

Every fortnight, The Loft and Dylan’s is host to Coffee House Sessions; stripped back, live acoustic music as part of a new nationwide University tour. Presented by Nerve Media, the performances from up-and-coming artists like Al Lewis, Lucy Mason and Lydia Baylis are the perfect counterpart to an afternoon coffee.

PETITION TO CHANGE STUDENT FINANCE

An e-petition has been launched to encourage the government to introduce monthly student finance maintenance payments to all UK full-time students.

Full-time students currently receive funding for living costs in 3 installments each year. No other group in the UK gets their income in this way. Monthly payments might ease the challenge of budgeting & enable students to better manage their money in preparation for their graduate career.
