O

ver the past few weeks, dedicated SUBU Volunteering students have been giving up their time at local schools as part of ongoing community projects. These included painting a large decorative mural for the students at St. Lukes School in Winton (above left)

and helping renovate garden facilities at Langside School in association with Diverse Abilities Plus (above right). If you would like to take part in SUBU Volunteering projects, from 5-minute volunteering to large conservation projects, visit their brand new website at subu.xvs.org.uk.

What can students expect from the Politics Society this year? An increased involvement with the University and SUBU to make a name for ourselves, and provide a service for students with things like speakers (Political and non Political), networking opportunities and also chances to work with local businesses. What are you looking forward to this year? Organising and participating in Parliament Week in November. The topic of focus is ‘Women in Democracy’ and we have organised 6 speakers with different backgrounds and careers. Also, we are organising a trip to Brussels for March 2014, where we hope to visit places like the Grand Palace, Council of the EU, the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Palais de Justice. What’s left on your BU Bucket List? I would like to either Trek Machu Picchu or climb Kilimanjaro before I graduate, but also to fundraise more than £5,000 for charity.

MEET YOUR NEW STUDENT COUNCIL With over 800 votes, the newly elected Student Councils are primed and ready to start representing your life at BU

Y

our votes have been counted, recounted, and then counted again to reveal SUBU’s brand new team of Part-time Officers, and our very first Student Council! After a hard fought week of candidate preparations and campaigning, our most ambitious elections to date drew to a close with a lively Dylan’s winners ceremony. Now elected, the team will undertake comprehensive training and begin working towards improving conditions through their respective councils. Murray Simpson, SUBU President, said he couldn’t be prouder of what everyone had achieved. "Running in an election is never easy, but every single candidate went in to it with the right attitude, and there was such a friendly, well contested buzz around campus all week. I can’t wait to start working with them!" Our sincerest thanks go out to all the candidates, their campaign teams and to every single student that voted. It’s people like this that make the Students’ Union what it is, and help make a positive impact on every BU students journey.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Your VP Comms Annie discusses lad mags,‘banter’ and if we can do more to fight sexism on campus

F

ollowing an eye opening summer of NUS training on dignity, diversity & equality campaigns I find myself with an endless list of issues I could write about... The need to end mental health stigma; the on-going fight against racial hate-crime; the need for an improved quality of student housing; support needed for student carers or even how we can eliminate participation barriers for LGBT students. However, I thought I’d ask about a topic dividing opinion in Unions around the country. Should lad mags like Nuts, Zoo, Loaded and Page 3 newspapers such as The Daily Star or The Sun have a place in our Students’ Union shop? I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a feminist, but the gender inequality articulated by the representation of women in the media, let alone in politics, science, engineering, technology and generally at senior management level, is becoming difficult to ignore. A report produced in 2012 (available at object.co.uk) found the extent to which women are objectified, sexualised and scrutinised in the UK press to be alarmingly disproportionate. The excuse that ‘sex-sells’ has become accepted alongside page after page of celebrity weight obsession. Even our famous

women in leadership find themselves at the mercy of ‘who wore it best’ columns whilst their male counter-parts experience thoughtful interviews on their latest career-moves. But whilst women are continuously stereotyped, humiliated or simply not featured at all, what effect is this having on the UK female audience? With a gender pay-gap still very much in existence, women account for 89% of eat-disorders and in the same report, 30% of people claimed a woman should be held at least partly responsible for being sexually attacked if she is wearing revealing clothing. Add that to women still only holding 3% of clout positions in telecoms, entertainment, publishing and advertising, where will this end? Of course there are counter arguments to be heard. Freedom of speech and choice, women’s right to exercise sexual liberation, but given a context of such inequality, it begs the question of whether this is really freedom. So I ask, should our campus take a stance against this depiction of women? Should we send a zero-tolerance message on sexism and remove these publications from our shelves? To have your say and start the debate, contact Annie on suvpcomms@bournemouth.ac.uk or @Subu_Comms on Twitter.

GENERATION MO

N

ow it’s November, that can only mean one thing. Men across the world are ditching the razors and letting the handlebar, pencil, horseshoe and whatever other types of moustache exist, grow in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and The Institute of Cancer Research. Last year in the UK alone, over 350,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raised nearly £27 million, and over £92 million globally. Send in your Movember efforts to @SUBUBournemouth on Twitter at ‘SUBU Bournemouth’ on Facebook and we’ll reward the best one!

LOOKING FOR A HOUSE?

UPCOMING EVENTS:

TUESDAYS=MILK

F

orget what you already had planned this Tuesday night, don the casual jeans/ Converse get up and grab a taste of Milk, The Old Fire Station’s premier indie night. Milk offers a serious change of pace from other nights in Bournemouth, with a focus on the legen-dairy music you want to hear from the likes of The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire and more. Entry is just £2 and most drinks are £1.50, with a mixture of known, and unknown indie and 80’s cheese hits. Check out Milk’s Facebook page for weekly competitons and to submit your playlists. Every year we see student after student spend large sums in estate agent fees, hand over unprotected deposits and sign year-long contracts for houses they can’t afford, only for housemates to withdraw from the tenancy later, leaving you to pick up the rent. All this stress can be avoided. There is no rush to secure a house before the end of term one. There are important things you need to consider and SUBU Advice can help. SUBU Advice and the Don’t Rent Yet campaign team will be available on campus on Tuesday 12th Nov with useful information for you to pick up. We’ll also be visiting halls of residence and will be happy to answer any questions you might have about entering a private rental contract.

From becoming a student rep to forming a club, from joining Nerve to even helping put together SUBUurbia every fortnight, we have loads of activities to help you become an active part of your Union and add experience to your CV.
