Performing Arts Society Continuing solid preparations for their huge musical performance of Grease in March 2014.

Jewish Society Celebrated Mitzvah Day by collecting over 200 items of food from ASDA to donate to local Foodbanks.

What can students expect from the BU Falcon cheerleaders this year?

We will be cheering on as many sports games as possible. Also students will see us actively fundraising to raise the funds for our competition entry fees.

How did you get involved the Falcons?

I joined in 2011, before I even came to the University. I was really happy to see Bournemouth had a good team, so I could continue into my 9th year of cheerleading. In March 2012 I was asked to take over and coach.

What are you looking forward to this year?

The BU Falcons goals for this year are to bring home trophies! Hopefully a 1st place win, that would be exciting.

What advice would you give to new students?

Be confident! We have a lot of people attend tryouts so they need to stand out and show off.

Law Society Played a key role in organising the annual Law Ball, a networking and celebratory event for BU Law students.

SUBU’S GREEN CHRISTMAS year round. We’re hosting a Green Christmas this week, helping you to waste less and get a bit more creative during the Yuletide season. Here are just a few tips for a gloriously green Christmas: - Use old Christmas cards, foraged fir cones and real springs of holly as décor.

- Instead of buying plastic baubles, bake gingerbread cookies and hang them on your tree. These can be best be recycled straight into your stomach!

- Buy some of your presents from charity shops.

It’s cheaper more environmentally friendly. Plus, Oxfam do a great laptop bag from recycled car tubes!

- Ethically dispose of your unwanted presents with ‘Green Gifting’ by regifting it to someone or donating to a charity shop. This may seem tight, but it’s a real thing, Google it!

- Try Go Green as your Christmas board game, featuring wheelbarrows, pigs and vegetables. Again, just Google it, you’ll see.

- Around around a million Christmas cards are thrown away every year, so try to send recycled cards.

- Save leftover turkey bones for stock to make a rich, meaty soup.

With the deadlines for the Green Impact Awards drawing nearer, we’re aiming to make Bournemouth a greener placefor Christmas

T

he Green Impact Awards are hosted by NUS, where Student Unions across the country submit evidence of how they are being ethical and environmental, in a hope they will be awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold accreditation.

Last year SUBU achieved Gold status because all of the hard work students, staff and officers did to lobby the University on green spaces, setting up committees and even getting our general manager to attend big university meetings on our behalf!

This time round we are going bigger. We’ve increased the amount of Green Ambassadors at BU from 4 to 12, we’ve got a member of staff tasked with green issues, a new Green Society and your new Environmental officer: Stefan Haas! And it’s all because being ethically and environmentally friendly is one of the biggest aims of SUBU looking to the future. One small thing you can do is upload pictures of unnecessary lighting to snapitoff.nus.org.uk. The more people from BU that upload the better.

FOR CHRISTMAS Your President discusses the importance of keeping your student house safe over the holiday period

N

ow that the Christmas festivities are approaching, we’re reflecting on all the fantastic work that has been done over the past term, and all the passionate students that have made a real difference by either representing students, volunteering, leading a society, or helping with local community projects. A huge thank you goes to all those students, and we can’t wait to launch a huge set of events and campaigns next term with our newly elected Councils.

Before setting off home for Christmas, we want to stress the importance of keeping your homes safe from burglaries and theft. Unfortunately, every year student properties can become targets of burglary over the holiday season. A mixture of high value items compared to the average family house and an increased chance of empty houses

as people go home creates an ideal opportunity for potential robbers. So before you leave home for Christmas, make sure you’ve done the following: Always remember to lock and shut doors and windows.

Do not leave bags, purses, mobile phones, laptops or other valuables Set light timers for the night time Consider registering your valuables for free at Police partnered site Imobilise The peak of burglaries is actually in January when you have returned back to Bournemouth – with all your new presents! We will be launching the ‘Lock it, Don’t Lose it’ campaign in the New Year to increase awareness of keeping your house and belongings secure, so stay tuned.

he festive season is upon us and over the past week The Old Fire Station has been celebrating it in style with our very own 12 days of Christmas.

Every night, we’re hosting a different Christmas themed party, featuring our very own alpine chalet in the form of the Moose Bar and daily prize draws online with festive treats. Each winner will also be in with a chance of receiving the prestigious Moose Bar for the rest of the year (don’t worry, we’ll be picking it up in time for Summer Ball)!

DRUGS AWARE

D

rug issues at university are nothing new. A nationwide poll from student newspaper The Tab saw 7 in 10 students admitted to trying drugs. However, recent coverage of the ever-concerning drug culture among students has resulted in Student Unions being called upon to ensure people are aware of the information available, including the physical and criminal risks.

We’ll be providing more information throughout next term but in the meantime, please be aware: - Drug taking can have serious consequences for your health. For example, Ketamine can cause irreparable damage to your bladder and MDMA can cause danger by impairing your ability to

sense body temperature or hydration.

- Legal highs can be equally dangerous.

They often contain untested ingredients and can have serious side effects.

- The Old Fire Station has a zerotolerance policy on drugs and is fully compliant with UK law. People found in possession will be arrested and prosecuted.

- If caught with drugs in Halls, you face consequences including police action and even eviction.
