ANOTHER GREAT TERM

W

ell didn’t that go quickly? At a giant 14 weeks, term two is one of the longest in BU’s history, but with the amount that’s happened - we’ve barely noticed.

We’ve had Speak Week, Activities Fair, I <3 BH, S.H.A.G. Week, One World Day, LGBT History Month, Advice events, Nerve going FM, Summer Ball hype heating up, Activities and Rep Awards, as well as loads of other events in The Old Fire Station and around

campus. Oh, and the small feat of electing our four new Full Time Officers in March. You can meet Chloe, Ellie, Reece and Peter over in our main feature and see what they’ve got planned stepping into an exciting future for SUBU. Join us back in May for the start of the third and final term, where we’ll be building up the big final push of our activities, all culminating in the ultimate end of year blowout that is Summer Ball!

he Purple Army were suited and booted as they came together for the Rep Awards. Over 70 You’re Brilliant awards were given to Reps, after both students and staff members nominated them for their outstanding contribution to democracy at BU. People taking part in the Rep Development Scheme also received their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

After the ceremony, Reps attended an after party in Dylan’s, which was brilliantly organised by Events Management students.

Winners of the main awards were: Student Rep of the Year – Katie Pliskin School of the Year – Faculty of Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution to Representation – Shannon Hardy Outstanding Contribution to the Student Experience by BU Staff – Fiona Knight, Graduate School Student Experience Champion of the Year – Mark Ridolfo, Business School.

MEET YOUR NEW LEADERS The Full Time Officer Elections were a standout success, and we proudly introduce our new team for 2014/15

M

eet (from left to right) Peter , Chloe , Reece and Ellie - your new team of Full Time Officers to lead SUBU into a new era next year.

After a hard fought week of Elections campaigning among 12 other incredible candidates that took over campus, the winners were announced in Dylan’s Bar in a special awards ceremony hosted by Nerve Radio.

The week saw imaginative ideas, hardcore campaigning and hoards of passionate students choosing who they want to represent them at the highest level.

The results were incredibly tight, and some positions came down to just a handful of votes.

Chloe , your new President expressed how overwhelmed she was when her name was announced as the winner.

"I felt so relieved and just so so happy. It took a good week at least to really sink in", she said.

Reece, your new VP Welfare echoed these feelings, and even asked current VP Comms Annie Hall if she was telling the truth when he got up on stage.

"It didn’t feel real. The thought of that many people believing in me and for taking the time to vote for me."

When asked what they were most looking forward

to next year, all emphasised their ability to positively impact the BU student experience.

Peter, your new VP Lansdowne said: "I am most excited about the opportunity to meet and work with some brilliant people and be able to try and make a difference with what I hope to achieve."

Ellie, your new VP Education said she was most excited about working with all the new Student Reps to improve their experience.

"I want to get reps really engaged and I’m looking forward to meeting all these new people that could have amazing ideas of how to improve student’s education", she said.

All four of the Officers were full of praise to those that voted for them, and wanted to thank each and every one of them.

"It’s so lovely to know that people who don’t even know you think that you’re one of the best candidates based on what they’ve seen throughout the week", Chloe said.

"Thank you so much to everyone. I feel I owe everyone who voted for me a drink!", expressed Ellie.

A massive congratulations to all the candidates and campaign teams throughout the week - who did an incredible job. Also, a thank you to everyone that voted, you’ve contributed in making the Students’ Union what it is!

TECHNOLOGY in Education

Your VP Education John talks about ways BU are utilising the latest technology to revolutionise your educational experience.

E

ducational technology in the digital age means more than just Facebook groups for courses and checking your timetable on iBU. Due to a saturation of technologies available to enhance and aid learning, universities have to teach tomorrow’s skills today, or risk being left behind.

Bournemouth University recognises that in order to graduate students that are not only ready to enter the job market, but excel in it (much like the students who worked on Academy Award winning Gravity), they must ensure that students are interacting with innovative lecturers who are unafraid of experimenting with new media and technology.

For the past six months, I have been working closely with a community of BU staff

dedicated to enhancing the literacy of lecturers, developing new ways of integrating technology in lectures and assessments, and scoping a vision that supports a whole new approach to learning – one shaped by the innovation that tech offers.

Through the Centre for Excellence in Learning, we have been exploring new methods of engaging students with their courses at BU. Whether that is by using wikis to increase peer-to-peer learning, streamlining the process by which students can be assessed and manage assessment online or the overhaul of myBU to work for students and not against them, we know that BU is on a journey to reshape the very nature of studying for a degree at this university.

We have a long way to go, but as fast as tech is evolving, so are we.
