#BUARRIVALS You came, you danced, you hashtagged – you conquered! SUBU is still reeling from the best arrivals period ever as we welcomed over 4000 of you to BU – and not forgetting all our returning students who got stuck in and got 2012/13 off to an electric start. In an exciting first, hundreds of you used #buarrivals to tweet and instagram your arrivals journey. From packed car-boots to party shenanigans, you showed us the arrivals experience through your eyes – and what a journey. Keep adding your pics. It’s your hashtag, your community. Congratulations to Jonathan Heard who won a digital Polaroid camera for his mash-up of arrivals scenes. Over the two weeks SUBU were really impressed with your open-minded, get stuck in attitude and energy around campus – long may it continue! From our yellow shirted welcome crew, to all of you wristband wearing explorers, thank

you for the biggest and best arrivals ever! So term 1 is well underway, and we hope you are enjoying the new BU courtyard (semi-circle to the 2nd years and above!) new facilities at sportBU, and the brand new bus cards – if you are not, let us know. As well as bringing you Nerve media, Clubs and Societies, Rag, Volunteering, Advice and Student Reps, we work to make sure you have the best BU experience possible. SUBU are separate to BU, and whilst most of the time we work positively and collaboratively with them, we also work to represent all our students nationally and locally on the issues that affect you. Well done to Max Stonier from Purbeck (left) who came up with the rather fantastic name of this paper. “I saw the comp on the arrivals Facebook page - It seemed the punniest thing
I could come up with. Arrivals (what I remember of it!) was really good. Everyone was being so friendly, and it was cool figuring out the regular nights like milk and lollipop.”

WE HAVE A HUGE ELECTION! Over the next few weeks you will see lots of VOTE NOW! posters around campus. This is to decide who you want to help run your Students’ Union. SUBU is made up of 4 full time officers – Louise (President) Ruby (VP Campaigns) Murray (VP Education) Sophie (VP Lansdowne) and they are supported by a group of students who make up the part time officers. Together, they make decisions based on the student voice and what you want. It’s really important to get involved in the election – find out which candidate deserves to represent you, read their manifestos, grill them and vote! Voting Opens: Wed 24th Oct – Fri 26th October. www.subu.org.uk/elections

“Take Over The Towers was my first ever Bournemouth University project so it was great to meet new people and work together coming up with lots of creative ideas. On the night I had so much fun, laughing, watching and listening to people’s reactions, finding it hard to believe what they had stumbled upon, ‘Am I actually playing pong on the side of a building?!’.Even the sober ones were amazed!” Kelly Griffiths: 1st Year Multi Media Journalism.

TO WE RING SU CCESS Over 40 students lit up the start of 2012/13 by taking part in ‘Take Over The Towers’ – a 2 week long project during arrivals which saw the group go from nothing but a notion to a spectacular visual display on the opening night of Bournemouth Arts by the sea Festival. The building opposite the Old Fire Station was visually hijacked as spectacular projections including an interactive game of pong delighted passers by.
