Visit a Farm Local farms are great places for families to spend the day. Many have outdoor activities that will keep kids of all ages engaged. Why not try walking through a corn maze? Corn season is over and some farmers create a corn maze in the field. Pumpkin farms let you walk through the fields so each family member can choose his or her own pumpkin to take home. Bring your pumpkins home and have a family pumpkin decorating contest. Pack a Picnic Fall is the perfect time of year to enjoy a fun picnic. Pack a simple lunch that the kids will enjoy and head for the forest preserve. Bring along some outdoor toys or games to play (Frisbee, bag toss, softball). Enjoy a beautiful autumn day with the family the old fashioned way – make it a rule to enjoy the outdoors without any electronic devices.

Take a Class Why not learn something new? There are plenty of fun classes you can take with your children. Think about a cooking class, pottery making or ceramics, music, or jewelry making.

There are classes to interest every member of the family. Try something new – get out of your comfort zone while exposing your children to new and interesting activities. Go Fishing Fishing is an enjoyable activity for kids and adults alike. Grab some fishing gear and take the kids to one of our many area lakes or ponds for a fishing experience. Pan fishing is best for kids because they are more likely to catch something and you can easily fish from shore. If you don’t have any fishing gear you can buy inexpensive fishing kits that have everything needed to get started. Adults will need to have a fishing license which can be easily obtained online or at a local sporting goods store.

Fall Golf Source Tips From Local Pros

DuPage Golf

Oak Meadows Associate Professional, Peter Longo Oak Meadows Golf Course Addison, Illinois DuPageGolf.com STAY IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD: If time and expense are limiting your trips to the driving range, you can do excellent work on your game right in your own backyard. TEE DRILL: Place 6 empty tees in a row, about ¼ inch above the ground. Take any club and, addressing each tee separately, take a full swing and knock the tee out of the ground. This drill improves hand/eye coordination and arm

control for guiding the club into the precise contact point. BLANKET: String a clothes line between two poles, about 10 feet wide and 7 feet high. Hang a thick blanket from the clothesline, leaving the sides and bottom untethered, hanging loosely. Stand as close as you can to the blanket without hitting it with the club. Then drive real balls, as hard as you can swing, into the blanket. The ball will wrap in the blanket and fall harmlessly to the ground, allowing you to work realistically on your swing with the same feel that comes from hitting real balls.

Pottawatomie Golf Course

By PGA Professional Ron Skubisz 845 N. Second Avenue St. Charles, IL 60174 pottawatomiegc.com Tip: Pottawatomie requires strategy on shot placement into the greens. The greens are small with few straight putts. The ideal strategy is to position your approach shot in the quarter of the green that presents the greatest opportunity for a straight putt. The desired shot is not always the shot closest to the flag, but a shot that is placed in the proper area. You also need to take into consideration suburban family | subfam.com

what side of the green to miss on for your approach shots. When a flag is favoring the left or right of the green, you should play for the center of the green or if you miss, play to miss on the opposite side of the flag position, allowing for a much easier approach.

Sugar Creek Golf Course Cory Ferrell, PGA Golf Professional 500 E. Van Buren, Villa Park, IL 60181 630-834-3325 sugarcreekgolfcourse.org

Tip: Chip Shot set up with 3 thoughts for solid shots! Hands forward, Weight Forward, and Sweep the grass. Chip Shot Set Up: Set the Club down behind the ball and grip down on the club handle. That allows you to stand closer to the ball and gives you more control of the club during the stroke. Play the ball in the middle of the stance. Stand with feet closer together and with an open stance. Now apply the 3 thoughts, “Hands forward”, “Weight forward”, and “Sweep the grass” during the stroke. Keeping your hands forward and weight forward will encourage you to hit down on the ball for a solid shot. Try the tip during your next short game practice session! September/October 2013

‘Twas the Night Before Monday By Pam Melyan-Bratton

‘Twas the Night Before Monday… And all through the house Mom was making lunches While ironing a blouse…

G

etting everyone ready for school and work each morning and out the door on time can be a dreaded, fren-

zied challenge. When common last-minute questions arise, “Where are my keys? I can’t find my backpack! Are my favorite sneakers

still in the garage?” you need a plan. With some night-before prep, mornings can run smoother this year. “The less you leave for the morning, the less time pressured you’re going to feel,” advises Dr. Matt Bellace, neuropsychologist and youth motivational speaker. “Memory works less efficiently under stress, for many people, and reducing the load will reduce stress. Anything that can be taken care of the night before will help reduce anxiety the next day.” All of the work shouldn’t fall on mom and dad, either. Bellace advises involving children in nighttime routines to give them a sense of empowerment and independence. He adds that after several years, the routines will become second nature and will carry with them into adulthood. “This is much better for a person than learning the routine as an adult be32 education central

cause more cognitive energy is needed later in life to remember to carry out the routine,” Bellace adds. Knowing that a routine can help doesn’t cut it if you don’t know how to create a routine. Follow these easy tips the night before, then relax and enjoy that cup of tea while things hum along smoothly each morning.

Be a Homework Hero As soon as homework is finished, have kids put everything they need into their backpacks and set the backpacks by the door. If your child has school library books that need to be returned, those go in at night. Is tomorrow physical education? If so, make sure that sneakers are a part of the wardrobe for the next day. If that major project for Social Studies is finally complete, send it in now if the teacher allows assignments to come in early. Don’t forget, parents have homework, too! All of those notices and permission forms that come home need a place to go until they are ready to be sent off – or do they? Put the important information and dates into your phone right away and then toss the paper into the recycling bin. If you are more of a pen and paper mom, write it down in your personal calendar or on the family calendar. This way, you also get rid of the clutter that all of those notices make. What about permission forms? Sign them immediately then put them right back in the folder. suburban family | subfam.com

Assembly Line Time Now that the backpacks are set and ready to go by the door, have kids put their shoes and jackets next to their backpacks so that everything is right there waiting to head out the door in the morning. This includes mom and dad’s work bags, too!

Make Breakfast Fast Lots of kids and families don’t have time for breakfast, so they don’t eat at all or they grab something sugary and quick like donuts or toaster pastries. The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) recognizes that families today live busy lives that often make it difficult to sit down long enough in the morning to eat a nutritious breakfast. Sometimes children are just not ready to eat a meal when they wake up. Other children may have long commutes to school or long periods between breakfast at home and school lunch. When eating breakfast at home isn’t an option, make it to go without the drive-thru window. Frozen waffles can be toasted quickly then can be cut into waffle sticks and wrapped in foil. A whole wheat bagel can be packed the night before with some cream cheese or peanut butter – just skip the toasting on school days. Easy-to-eat fruit, like apples and bananas, and yogurt cups are a healthy on-the-go morning meal. Grab a bottle of orange juice or milk, and kids can enjoy a quick, nutritious breakfast take-out style. September/October 2013

What’s Cooking? If budget permits, allow children to look at the upcoming school lunch menu for the week and choose 1 or 2 days to buy school lunch. This will give you 1 or 2 nights “off” from figuring out what to pack for lunch and making it. On days when children are bringing their lunch to school, pack it the night before. Let children choose what they would like for lunch so that in the morning when they ask, “What did you pack me?” there is no, “I don’t LIKE that!” When the kids are bringing their lunches, let them help the night before. Kids can look through the pantry and choose a fun snack, along with some fruit. Depending on the age, kids can even spread that mustard on their turkey sandwich to help mom and dad with the prep. Of course, if they are old enough, they can make their own sandwich. Now that’s an idea!

Shopping Spree Sunday Set aside Sunday night as “Shopping Night.” Everyone goes through their closets and “shops” for the clothing they want to wear for the week. But first, check the weather forecast on TV or online. Clothes can be inspected for massive wrinkles (a quick ironing can ease the stress of pulling out the iron at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning), missing buttons (easier to replace the button now or choose a new shirt the night before than in the heat of the morning rush moment), and any clothing blip that might get in the way of the workday/school day prep routine. Designate an area of the closet for the upcoming week’s outfits. The night before, take the outfit out and hang clothes for the next day on the dresser’s knob or the door knob or set them out neatly on top of a dresser, so clothes are ready and waiting for each family member to jump into. On Sunday nights, have everyone put together their outfits and set them aside so that the mess and craziness is all in one night with no pressure of getting to school or work. No one is fumbling through closets and drawers, grumbling about wanting to wear a favorite shirt with a missing button or jeans that still have that grass stain even though mom washed them with stain remover. The most effective way to ease yourself into mornings and help them move along smoothly is to figure out what system will work best for you and your family. As long as everyone is helping the night before, the ways in which a family beats the morning rush can be creative and fun. Pick what works for you, get the kids involved, and then enjoy mornings of calm before heading out the door. September/October 2013

Back to School

Not Just Child’s Play By Gayla Grace

U

nhappy in a job with limited potential, I opted to return to school for a master’s degree as I approached my fortieth birthday. I began searching for options in other fields of study, determined to work a schedule other than eight to five with four kids at home. My current employer offered tuition reimbursement, which provided an additional incentive. So, despite my fears and uncertainties, I plunged into a master’s degree that I’m thankful today offers me a wide range of possibilities. Returning to school as an adult requires serious consideration. When raising a family at the same time and/or working full-time, it means personal sacrifice and strict time management. However, it can bring greater job security and satisfaction, in addition to access to skills of higher demand or personal interest classes for individual enrichment. There are many possibilities to consider when returning to school. The question of “Why?” needs to be answered first. Are you looking for a career change that requires a long-term commitment? Do you hope to increase your marketability with current career-related 34 education central

courses? Or do you want to acquire a new skill through a continuing education course? The National Center for Education Statistics reported that the primary reason adults returned to school was to take work-related or personal interest courses. Regardless of the reason, having a clear goal before returning to school will help determine your direction and how much time and energy you need to invest. Another consideration of higher education centers on tuition costs. Finishing an undergraduate degree or diving into a graduate degree can be expensive. Where you choose to attend, private versus public, and full-time versus part-time status determines how much you spend. Tuition reimbursement plans and low-interest loans can play a role in helping with expenses. It’s important to have a financial plan to avoid setbacks that might prevent you from reaching your goal. suburban family | subfam.com

What changes do you need to make in your schedule to accommodate classes and studying? Will your current employer allow time off for classes? Do you need to secure babysitting for your children? Do you have volunteer duties you can delegate to someone else for awhile? Prioritizing your responsibilities allows a smoother transition with your new schedule. It’s also important to keep your family in mind and seek their support for your decision. Consider asking for additional help with housework or meal preparation. When I returned to school, I had class one night a week and I asked our oldest daughter to be responsible for the meal that night. She assumed the additional responsibility, equipping her with meal preparation as a maturing young lady. The other children helped with clean up and after-dinner chores. It enabled our household to continue to run smoothly and enjoy a homecooked meal without me. September/October 2013

Returning to school may require flexibility with your schedule due to unexpected happenings in your personal life. An aging parent with a sudden illness or a child in need of extra time and attention may slow the progress of classes. While completing my degree my husband’s job was transferred, which prompted an out-ofstate move before I finished. Then I learned I was pregnant (unexpectedly) with our youngest child. It seemed impossible that I could complete my schooling, but I searched several options before giving up. I consulted with a school in our new location and learned I could take my last two classes after we moved, transferring the credits back to my current school to complete my coursework. I couldn’t travel to the graduation ceremonies at eight months pregnant, but I beamed with pride as I received my diploma through the mail upon completion! Perseverance toward your goal, despite unexpected circumstances, will lead to accomplishing what you set out to do. Returning to school as an adult offers fresh challenges and exciting opportunities. With planning and perseverance, it opens up a variety of doors that add new meaning to life. What better time to consider the endless possibilities of returning to school? You’ll be glad you did!

Back to School Organinzing Tips Stock up on School + Craft Supplies

Take advantage of the stores being chockfull of fun and inspiring school, craft, and office supplies to create a well-stocked homework or craft cabinet, and save yourself trips for extra supplies throughout the year!

Declutter the Bedrooms

An organized kid’s room will help you both get each day off to the right start! Clear out old books and make room for the new books on bookshelves.. Clear out desk drawers full of old supplies and notebooks. Try on clothes to see what fits and bring the ones that don’t to a resale shop.

Create or Update Family Message Center

A family message center will help you keep track of the many moving pieces known as your life with kids. Perfect for keeping track of meetings, project due dates, soccer games, etc.

Set up a Lunch Center

Create a spot in the pantry and fridge for lunch making supplies. such as snacks, treats, and veggies that are appropriate sizes and that fit their healthy diets. The night before school make sandwiches together and then store lunches in the fridge until morning.

Plan the Homework Area

Kids need a quiet, well-organized place where they can focus on their homework without interruption. Set up a homework station in a place that has good lighting and enough room to spread out. Keep the station well-stocked with supplies. Use jars, bins, and file folders to keep the space organized.

Backpack Station

Too many mornings have been spent trying to find homework, books, and even backpacks. Set up a coat rack specifically for their backpacks. After homework is done, all of the papers and books must be in the backpack and placed on their hook. Each child must check that it is in place before bed. The best part about organizing kids for school is that adapting to your own kids’ needs is much easier when there is a system in place. Have your best year ever!

FRUGAL TIPS FOR FALL FITNESS By Andrea Woroch

T

he first day of fall is fastly approaching; Sunday, Sept. 22 marks the autumnal equinox and the official end to a sweltering summer. From the crisp, cool air to the brilliantly-colored leaves, this is one of my favorite seasons to be active outdoors.

Whether you spent the summer scaling mountains or doing laps in your gym’s outdoor pool, exercising outside doesn’t have to end when the first leaf drops. In fact, fall is a great time to harvest a new routine to reenergize your workout. Consider the following tips and get motivated!

Layer up. Like us on facebook for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to the Polynesian Waterpark Resort, Wisc. Dells! facebook.com/ SubFam

38 fitness first

The change in season brings about a change in climate. Depending on where you live, temperatures could gradually decrease or drastically dip over the next month. Keep this in mind as you plan outdoor activities and invest in breathable, moisture-wicking clothing. Though you may feel chilly at first, your body will quickly warm up once your blood starts pumping so you don’t want to overdress either. For those cold morning runs, a hat will help insult your head where you lose the suburban family | subfam.com

most heat. Review this post from SparkPeople on how to layer effectively.

Enjoy the foliage. Exercising outside feels like a lot less work, especially if you’re doing something you enjoy. Relish the cooler weather and take advantage of outdoor adventures before the winter rolls in. Research park trails nearby to enjoy a hike or bike ride amid fall’s colorful foliage. Even apple picking or pumpkin gathering with your kids is a fun activity that is sure to burn calories.

Be safe. Shorter days bring dark mornings and evenings, but this shouldn’t deter you from an outdoor exercise regime. Just be smart about it; wear reflective workout clothes and carry a flashlight to illuminate your path. Bike ridSeptember/October 2013

ers should invest in headlights and blinking tail lights and stay clear of heavy traffic roads. All early morning or evening exercisers should opt for designated paths or head to the local school track.

Take cue from the kids. As children head back to school this season, remember that you, too, should never stop learning. Are you interested in boxing, tap dancing or even fencing? Give it a try. Ask about deals on intro classes to find out if it’s right for you, or scour daily deal sites for introductory discounts.

Workout at home. Now that the days feel shorter and the holiday season is looming, fitting fitness into your daily routine may feel impossible. But remember, even 15 or 20 minutes is enough time to get in a quick workout -- think living-room aerobics or a quick dash around the neighborhood. Be prepared for those fleeting moments of free time with fitness DVDs or better yet, hit up Hulu for free workout tutorials on Exercise TV.

Get the right gear. For the most part, you can challenge your muscles with your own body weight and avoid all that specialty, super-expensive equipment advertised on TV. However, some items are helpful to your results, like hand weights or resistance bands. Shop online for discounts at FreeShipping.org, where you can get a coupon code for 20-percent off at Champion through Oct. 9.

Savor fall produce for less. Grocery stores and farmers’ markets will be

full of fall’s freshest produce including apples, figs, pears, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and winter squash. In-season produce is rich in flavor and cheap on your wallet. So, if you aren’t sure how to turn these seasonal vegetables and fruits into meals check out the tasty recipes from CookingLight.com.

Physical therapy

Living with pain or injury? Buy a bike. According to The Best Time to Buy Guide, new bicycle models are released in September and dealers slash prices because they don’t want old models haunting their showrooms. Bike manufacturers make updates to new models, so educate yourself on those changes. Sometimes the updates are minimal or limited to design tweaks, making the older models a super smart buy.

Weigh yourself regularly. With colder weather comes bulkier clothes, and I find it easy to overlook a few extra pounds through chunky sweaters. Combat this oversight by weighing yourself regularly, preferably at same time every day to get the most accurate reading. For help tracking your weight and exercise progress over time, try Fitbit’s Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale, which wirelessly syncs to a free and private online account each time you step on the scale. You’ll get stats with easy-to-read graphs of important body measurements including weight, BMI and body fat percentage over time.

We specialize in Pilates-based Physical Therapy, which combines traditional therapeutic interventions with deep core strengthening and whole-body conditioning. Massage therapy and the Be Activated technique are also utilized by our Therapists in an effort to expedite recovery and reduce the risk of re-injury.

10 Ways to Turbo Charge Your Immune System By Sandra Gordon

T

he world is filled with nasty viruses, bacteria and microbes just waiting to do you in. At the very least, they can cause temporary sickness and misery. Worse, they can make you more vulnerable to killer conditions like cancer. Here, 10 simple ways to mobilize your immune system’s illness-fighting forces-the T cells, natural killer cells and antibodies that declare war and act the enemy.

Give yourself a shot against illness. Vaccines aren’t just for kids. Adults need them too. In fact, there are 10 vaccine-preventable diseases adults can protect themselves against, such as hepatitis B (for adults with diabetes or who are at risk for hepatitis B) and measles, mumps and rubella. Except for the flu shot, which is recommended yearly for adults age 19 and older, many of the vaccines require only one or two doses over the course of a lifetime. Protecting yourself safeguards others. It’s now recommended that adults, especially those in close contact with infants younger than 12 months, such as parents, grandparents, babysitters and nannies, get the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine and a booster every 10 years after that. For a complete list of the vaccines for adults, visit the CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/ Features/AdultVaccines/.

Get some shut eye. Studies suggest that sleep deprivation causes sluggish production of natural killer cells, a type of white blood cell that can obliterate certain microbes and cancer cells. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that catching a cold is more likely if you sleep less than seven hours a night. All 153 participants in the study were given a solution containing live rhinovirus (a common cold virus). Those who slept 8 hours or more each night were three times less likely to catch the cold. Overall, your best bet is to aim for a solid eight hours of sleep each night, says Merrill Mitler, Ph.D., program director at the Neuroscience Center at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland. If that’s not possible, nap if you can, and be sure to catch up on lost sleep on the weekends.

Don’t be a fat phobic. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (found in fatty fish like salmon) may help reduce your body’s production of eicosanoids from omega-6 fatty acids, hormone-like substances that can over-stimulate your immune system, says Artemis Simopoulos, M.D., founder and president of the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health in Washington, D.C. That might explain why high levels of eicosanoids are associated with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diverticulitis, multiple sclerosis and lupus, which 44 family wellness

occur when an hyper alert immune system attacks the body’s own cells as a “foreign invader.” To up your diet’s omega-3 intake, eat fish two at least two times a week, says Dr. Simopoulos, echoing the recommendation of the American Heart Association.

Pile on the produce. A healthy diet has the power to prevent heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders and some forms of cancer. Only 25 percent of U.S. children and adults consume the minimum recommended intakes of vegetables, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. As a general rule, half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables. “Focus on eating more produce in whatever way it’s convenient for you,” says Marisa Moore, R.D., L.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. Minimize nutrient loss during cooking by steaming or microwaving veggies in a small amount of water until just tender-crisp. Guard against weight gain. Research shows that obesity may alter your immunesystem response. Add to that the many health risks associated with being overweight (including heart disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea), and avoiding the 20- to 30-pound gain that many adults pack on as they age becomes an important way to safeguard your wellbeing, says Madelyn H. Fernstrom, Ph.D., founding director of the Weight Management Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The number you don’t want to hit: a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher, which is considered overweight. To determine your BMI, log onto http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ bmicalc.htm, the Web site for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Exercise your options. Doing moderate workouts (like walking or jogging) for at least 30 minutes five or more times a week can increase the circulation of immune-boosting natural killer cells in your body, even when you’re at rest, according to Susanna Cunningham-Rundles, Ph.D., research professor of immunology in pediatrics at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. But overdosing may work against you. The stress of intense exercise (approximately 75 minutes or more at a strenuous pace, or anything that makes you feel as if you’re pushing yourself too hard) may stimulate stress hormones like cortisol, which some studies suggest can suppress natural killer cells. The upshot? If you’re a long-distance runner or serious athlete, you may be at increased risk for colds and flu. Take other stay-healthy steps, like getting plenty of sleep, eating a well-balanced diet and asking suburban family | subfam.com

your doctor about a flu shot, recommends Cunningham-Rundles.

Don’t get caught dirty handed. Get in the habit of coughing and sneezing into your sleeve or elbow and teach your kids to do the same. Cold and flu viruses spread from person to person in spray droplets (sneezing) or when germ carriers cough or sneeze into their hands then touch, say, the TV remote or the phone. Also be sure to wash your hands often, especially before eating and after using the bathroom, changing a diaper and touching raw meat, poultry, fish or eggs. Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent microbes that cause colds, flu and foodborne illness from entering your body. If soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer will do.

Take a breather. Evidence suggests that unmanaged stress sets off a chain of hormonal events that can decrease the activity of natural killer cells, says Gailen Marshall, M.D., Ph.D., director of the division of allergy and immunology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Runaway stress can also make you susceptible to colds and aggravate chronic conditions such as asthma and allergies. “Recognize your limitations and give yourself permission to have time just for you,” Marshall advises. Schedule in at least 20 minutes of daily down time and find a fun hobby.

Get more zinc. If you feel a cold coming on, try a zinc-based cold remedy, such as ColdEeze. “It can help boost your immune system to lessen the duration of a cold and severity of symptoms,” says Bob Stout, a pharmacist in Candia, New Hampshire. Cold-Eeze works by sealing the receptors on cells so that cold viruses can’t enter and replicate. For best results, start the treatment-pop a lozenge or give yourself two spritzes of the oral spray version--within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Don’t go it alone. Can you name someone who’d help you in a pinch? Do you have a confidante? Answering yes puts you at lower risk for illness, particularly heart disease, says Marty Sullivan, M.D., director of the Healing the Heart Program at the Duke Center For Living in Durham, North Carolina. Studies show that people who have a diverse social network (including friends, family, coworkers, etc.) have greater resistance to colds too. But don’t just “friend” someone on Facebook. Strengthen your connections by meeting in person occasionally for coffee or a fun night out. September/October 2013

Feuling a Family By Julie Feldman

F

ueling a family is perhaps the most challenging job around. It pays nothing and demands everything, but the rewards for having a wellfed and well-fueled family are increasingly abundant and well worth the effort. As parents we walk a tightrope every day. We strive to create happy, healthy, welladjusted children. We want them to excel in academics, but not to obsess over them. We teach them to be friendly, but not to talk to strangers. We encourage them to make friends, but not to fit in at any cost, and we cheer them on in their interests and endeavors as long as they fit into the carpool schedule and the budget. When it comes to feeding our children, similar issues present themselves, making proper nutrition somewhat of a conundrum. We want them to be healthy and maintain a normal weight, but not to develop an eating disorder. Day in and day out in my nutrition practice I hear the same vocabulary used to describe our kid’s palates.

46 family wellness

“He is so picky,” “She is a carb-a-holic,” “He won’t eat that.” At some point this narrative begins to define our kids. When they hear over and over again that “they are a sugar bug,” they begin to believe that in fact they are. In order to nurture our children, and rewrite their internal narrative, a tightrope must be walked carefully to ensure two main outcomes. One, that our children have access to healthy options all of the time. Elementary school students can’t grocery shop or cook without help. It is our job to create a safe environment for our kids at home and at restaurants. By providing healthy options and allowing our children to choose between two or three healthy things, we maintain a necessary level of autonomy for our young adults. My new book, Grocery Makeover: Small Changes for Big Results, is an aisle-by-aisle guide to healthy eating. It provides recipes, brand names, meal makeovers and specific guidelines for each and every aisle at your local market. As a working suburban family | subfam.com

mom of 3 kids who have been blessed with their mother’s metabolism, I understand firsthand the challenges that exist in the world of healthy families. Seek out great items that taste good and are good for you. Some of my favorites include KIND Bars Nuts and Spices varieties. With less than 6 grams of sugar, and the perfect pairing of protein and fiber, these goodies pack a nutritional punch every member of the family will enjoy. I also love Bolthouse Farms low-fat yogurt dressings as the perfect vehicle to promote veggie eating. I haven’t met a kid who doesn’t like the low-fat ranch and I haven’t met a parent that doesn’t like the cup of veggies that goes along with it! Our second goal as parents is to help our kids to see their bodies as unique and beautiful. We come in many shapes and sizes. It is our job as parents to educate our children about their bodies and how they may be different but no less special than that of their siblings or their friends. I find that many children are hung up on the fact that it’s simply unfair that they September/October 2013

need to eat baby carrots while their best friend is eating a sleeve of Oreo cookies. Knowledge is power in this journey. When counseling families on how to create healthier lifestyles, I see kid’s faces light up when I explain to them that the reason they always feel hungry and tired is because of the food choices they are making. They are almost relieved to learn that by eating differently, they will not only look different but they will feel different. Herein lies the million dollar question: When do I become too strict when it comes to eating healthy? Parents and caregivers must remember that while their intentions may be the best, it ultimately lies within the child to make a good choice. We cannot shame our children into eating healthy, but we can love, empower and motivate them to do so. As adults we are certainly less than perfect when it comes to our own diets. We learn how to adjust our exercise and daily intake to maintain a healthy weight. These skills are not a part of your average third grader’s repertoire, thus the age-old adage that all things are okay in moderation certainly applies to food in their case. Serving as a role model for your child in all aspects of eating will help to communicate this concept. Include sweets occasionally as part of your balanced diet. Exercise with your children each day. Create a menu wheel on the fridge and allow them to help choose what’s for dinner. Albeit time-consuming, bring your kids to the market and let them pick the fruits and vegetables. Make meal and snack time

fun by using kabobs, cupcake holders, cookie cutters and blenders to create nutrient-dense, colorful and fun-to-eat options. Avoid rewarding your children with food. Our society perpetuates the emotional connection we develop with food by matching every happy occasion with a sugary treat. Start new traditions of activity-based rewards like roller skating, bowling, or bike riding. The reality of this multi-dimensional and complex issue is that most poor food choices we make have more to do with our own self-esteem than anything else. Raise your children up in every way so that they strive to honor the person that they are and the body that they own through balanced nutrition and plenty of physical activity. Julie Feldman MPH, RD, is a registered dietitian in Michigan. As an author, national spokesperson, counselor and consultant, she helps children, adults and families to create healthier lifestyles. She can be reached at www.dietitianjuliefeldman.com or at 248464-0076. Her new book, Grocery Makeover: Small Changes for Big Results, is available everywhere books are sold.

your pet

Breed – Check online about the different breeds, their temperament, health & physical characteristics. Find out all you can about the specific animal from shelter workers and volunteers.

A FOREVER FRIEND T

he American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) sponsors October as Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month to encourage Americans to turn their houses into homes by adopting a shelter dog. Each year, millions of dogs enter our nation’s shelters, yet of the almost 59 million owned dogs in this country, fewer than 20 percent are shelter adoptees.

Lifestyle -- Think about your lifestyle and personality in terms of the kind of dog that would be more compatible with your home and your living situation. Activity level -- Assess the activity level and exercise requirements of the dog you are considering. Are you able to walk your dog several times a day and play with him? Age -- Figure out what age of the animal is best suited to you and your family. Which is more compatible with your age and lifestyle? Do you want an active puppy that needs attention and training, a middle-aged dog with established behaviors, or an older, less active dog?

Pomerance, an activist who has owned more than 40 shelter dogs in her lifetime, thinks it’s a shame that more people don’t adopt from a shelter, because the most faithful, healthy and loving dogs are waiting there for new homes.

said Pomerance, author of seven books about pets, including Our Rescue Dog Family Album (www.animalcompanionsandtheirpeople.com). “They think, ‘I don’t want to inherit someone else’s problem,’ or they simply think all the dogs there are abused or hard to train, or that they won’t be able to find the breed that they want. All of those notions couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, up to nearly 60 percent of dogs in shelters are not strays, but pets whose families had to give them up because of a loss of income or a change in location. These are faithful, loving dogs who just need a home and some love.”

People sometimes don’t go to animal shelters to adopt a dog, because they have a lot of misinformation about these animals,”

The key is to know how to choose the right pet for your family, and Dr. Pomerance offered these tips to help families do just that:

Budget – Research the costs of not only adopting a pet (adoption fee), but veterinary care, including spay/neuter, vaccinations, potential injuries or illness, regular checkups, toys, accessories, etc. Factor in costs of food, pet sitters or boarding while you’re away. Keep in mind many pet shelters offer these services as part of the adoption fee, or at a discounted rate because many are not-for-profit organizations supported by private donations. Space – Do you have sufficient room for a dog to move, eat and sleep comfortably? Further, are you legally allowed to have a dog on the premises/in your community? If you rent, make sure you are legally allowed to have a pet. Shelter -- Find out as much about the shelter from which you are adopting your pet as possible – what is its reputation? Is it a kill or no-kill shelter? What is the track record of the successful adoption of its dogs?

Time – Do you have enough time for a quality relationship with a dog? Like children, they require attention, companionship, patience and interaction. They also require socialization and obedience training.

“Adopting a shelter dog is a lifetime choice, as these pets will likely spend the rest of their lives with you, and it is not something that should be taken lightly,” Pomerance added. “That being said, it is a positive choice, and one that will bring joy and love into your home and provide your family a loyal, caring companion.” September/October 2013

You can invite fans from only one team or you can invite fans from opposing teams and make embarrassing bets to be paid up immediately following the game. The decorations for this type of party are pretty easy. Team colors rule the day. You can order a personalized football banner, or just go with balloons and decorative paper goods in the team colors.

The food for a football themed crowd is pretty simple. All you need is chips, dip, hamburgers, hotdogs, and maybe some pigs-in-a-blanket. When it gets later in the season, consider serving heartier bowls of Chili. Don’t forget the beverages. And, remember, friends don’t let friends drink and drive.

A fun activity for your football themed party is to use the other team’s star player as a target in a friendly game of darts. A quick game of flag football is a must during half-time. Keep

Bobbing for apples and three-legged races are fun activities for the grown-ups and big kids during a harvest themed party. Give the little ones bubbles to keep them going for a while. If we get an unusual warm fall day, you can turn on the sprinkler for the children to run through. If chillier weather prevails, a backyard bonfire might be more suitable.

The harvest themed autumn party is a perennial classic. Your invitation will be a welcome break from the back-to-school hoopla. Your decorations should be in the earth tones of fall such as, brown, gold, orange, and deep red to compliment your theme. Streamers in fall colors and leaf cut outs and a burlap table cloth add a nice touch.. Dried flower centerpieces and pumpkin bowl accents are great seasonal touches.

The food for the harvest themed party is probably the best around. Sweet potatoes are a rich offering that can take many forms. You can serve them baked, fried, or in a casserole. Pumpkin and apple pie are expected at such gatherings. To make serving easier, try a couple of slow cookers of chili or stew. You can have a build your own toppings station. You might even consider using your pumpkin bowls for soup, instead of decoration. Anything hearty hits the mark. Host an autumn themed backyard party and have great fun this fall. Slip on a windbreaker and grab a mug of cider (with cinnamon stick, of course). So start planning now. Whether you plan a football party or a harvest party, you are sure to create memories that your family and friends will carry through the seasons. September/October 2013
