What Kids Need for a Mentally Healthy Summer By Tanya Peterson

S

ummer is about to begin in earnest. Those adults who have children in their lives likely have a checklist of summer necessities to keep kids healthy. Sunscreen, bug spray, water bottles, Band-Aids, and other such necessities will help kids stay physically healthy and well through the summer. What about a checklist for kids’ mental health this summer? What’s necessary to help kids be mentally healthy during the summer months?

When we care for our children (whether they’re our own offspring or someone else’s), it’s natural to want them to thrive. “Have a great summer” can take on a new level of meaning, and there can be a great deal of pressure behind that command-style wish. There are certain things all children need in order to experience mental health and well-being and thus have a great summer. Think of the following list as a checklist for a mentally healthy summer. Kids Need a Sense of Belonging in the Summer to Enhance Mental Health Psychologists such as Abraham Maslow, William Glasser, and more have demonstrated suburban family | subfam.com

through copious amounts of research that a basic human need is love and belonging. It’s essential for mental health and well-being. For most of the year, school is a major source of belonging for kids of all ages. While kids don’t feel close to everyone at school (and there are some people they’d love to get far away from), school in general provides an important sense of belonging and human connection. When the doors close for the summer, some kids can have a hard time adjusting to a sudden void in their network of connections.Tips to help children adjust and maintain a sense of belonging: • Help them know that if they’re feeling lonely or down, they’re not alone. It’s normal to need some time to adjust to a change, even a good change. • Plan some special activities together. A picnic in a park, a game of catch in the backyard, a night of stargazing—anything that allows your child to connect with you is excellent. • Allow your child to have friends over, go to friends’ houses, and otherwise connect with kids of the same age. For optimum July/August 2016

mental health, kids need connections with peers. It fulfills the need for belonging, and it creates a support network that contributes to the development of resilience. A Sense of Purpose Gives Kids a Mental Health Boost Throughout the Summer As much as kids grumble about homework or their classes in school, these things are actually very good for them in a number of ways. Academics aside, school helps kids develop a sense of purpose. A universal question, worded differently across the life span, is why am I here? We answer that question by discovering a sense of purpose. School-age kids need to feel a drive, a motivation, a sense of purpose in order to be mentally healthy. Sometimes, the summer months can contribute to feelings of depression or anxiety because of their lackadaisical days. To help kids maintain a sense of purpose, and thus mental wellness, consider these ideas: • Let them help decide and plan activities (with age-appropriate limitations, of course). Allow them to brainstorm things to do, and have them make the plans for it. This can apply to the lunch menu or to a weekend outing. Kids thrive when they are allowed to have some responsibility for what the family does.

• Give them age-appropriate chores. Sure, they’ll likely grumble, but behind the rolled eyes is a kid who is developing a sense of purpose, a sense that there are things to do during the summer and that they can contribute to getting them done. That develops self-confidence, an important component of mental health.

Summer Fun is Essential to Kids’ Mental Health Like belonging and a sense of purpose, fun is actually essential to mental health and well-being. Experiencing fun reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, and it increases our connection to others. For kids who are out of school, away from their normal routine, network of supportive adults, and peers, summer vacation can become a drag. Kids can become listless and apathetic or irritable and prone to getting into trouble. Introduce fun for a mentally healthy summer. Fun is a balancing act. Kids need structured fun, such as involvement in sports, clubs, classes, and camps. Structure provides routine and a sense of safety. Too much structure, though, can be stifling and stressful, even contributing to anxiety. Kids also need unscheduled time for free-play to enhance their mental health. To find this balance, • Decide how much you can spend on structured activities, and research what is available in your area. The older your

child is, the more input she can have in this process (other than the budget, of course). Let her help you choose one or a few structured activities • Put together a kit or box for free-time. Again, let your child contribute. Being set loose for free-time can be overwhelming for kids, resulting in the complaint that there’s nothing to do. Having things on hand for your child to do is helpful in getting them into the fun. You might have noticed that belonging, purpose, and fun are interconnected. They exist together, contributing to each other positively. Together, belonging, purpose, and fun help your child have a mentally healthy summer. Children, like adults, are complete and complex creatures. Their skin must be protected from the sun’s rays. Their bodies must be properly nourished and hydrated. And their mental health needs to be cared for as well to help them thrive through the summer and well into next school year. No more is this true than with putting. The hole itself is 4.25 inches wide, but a ball rolling to it changes the effective “opening” of the hole and varies upon speed. This opening can be measured. For example, a putt rolling 6 inches past the hole has an effective hole opening of 3.9 inches, but a ball rolling 3 feet past only has an opening of 1.4 inches. The larger the opening, the more chance the ball has to go in. To make sense of this, picture a putt barely trickling to the hole that falls into the side door, compared to one with too much speed that lips out, even though it hits the cup nearly dead center. The trickling putt takes more advantage of the hole’s full diameter than the lipped-out putt which rolls over the edge, meaning the hole’s effective size is bigger with

irthday party planning shouldn’t cost a fortune. These ideas are fresh, fun, and won’t raid your wallet. Planning a birthday party? Better save those pennies. According to event services firm GigMasters, over two-thirds of parents spend at least $300 on their child’s big day, and nearly one in six spend a grand or more. But you don’t need to raid your kids’ college fund to plan a festive, photo-worthy fete. These four ideas for DIY home parties max out on style and fun without breaking the bank.

What’s Old is New: Vintage Noticed an influx of retro tunes, toys, and togs lately? Modern parents are coasting on a wave of nostalgia that’s bringing all sorts of vintage Americana into vogue. Nearly any party theme can take on a vintage twist for a fresh, new-again vibe, says Raleigh-based mom of one Lauren Isaacs. Isaacs drew on the Little Golden Books she loved as a child to craft a “vintage kitten” theme for daughter Evelyn’s first birthday celebration. “We’re having a throwback moment in parenting and clinging 36 celebrate!

Cinematic: Outdoor Movie

Back to nature: Scavenger hunt

How to:

Think all kids’ parties need to be wild and noisy? Think again. If relaxed and low-key is more your family’s style, consider a backyard movie screening, complete with a favorite film, movie-theater snacks, and comfy lounging pillows. This theme can take one a glitzy, awards-show twist with strings of glittering backyard lights, a DIY “red carpet” made from carpet samples, and parental “parparazzi” snapping pics; an old-fashioned lighted movie sign, striped popcorn bags, and classic movie memorabilia give it a vintage vibe.

If your little one loves mud, bugs, and rocks, why not plan a party that combines treasure-hunting with a little good oldfashioned dirt? A nature-themed scavenger hunt can work for children as young as 4, as long as you have other adults to help (and since younger kids’ parents tend to stay for the party, there’s sure to be extra grown-ups on hand, anyway). Pick your location based on the size of your group and the guests’ ages—smaller kids can search your backyard, while older kids may want to spread out over a neighborhood or a local park.

And, if you just arent’t feeling up to the DIY task, be sure to call the advertisers in this section to help you plan an affordable, fun event!

How to:

A white sheet provides the backdrop for the movie, so find one that’s large and bright, and place it in a spot that won’t get blasted with rays from the setting sun. (Note: big-box retailers also sell inflatable outdoor movie screens for under $150.) Rent a projector from a party-rental store and do a “test run” beforehand to ensure that your party won’t suffer from an audiovisual malfunctions. Search Pinterest.com and Etsy.com for coordinated printables like movie tickets, snack labels, even a “Concessions Stand” sign. To take the theme over the top, rent a classic movie popcorn popper; theater-style popcorn tubs can be purchased inexpensively on Amazon.com.

Create a simple printable chart with pictures of the items kids will search for—a flower, a beautiful rock, an interesting leaf, a pinecone, an acorn, a chestnut, or a twig. Tape or glue the charts to simple brown paper lunch bags, and be sure to include a pencil or crayon so kids can mark off the treasures they find. Set a time limit, and don’t forget prizes for guests who collect every item. Inexpensive dollar-store magnifying glasses add a nice touch and serve as a useful take-home treasure for young naturalists.

IS YOUR CHILD READY FOR SCHOOL?

A

nticipation builds as the new school year approaches. Every year my kids become antsy as the stores fill up with new backpacks, fun colorful accessories, and the latest in locker items and school supplies. And even though I am not ready to begin the process of letting summer with my kids slip through my fingers, I grudgingly give in and get to work. The excitement of and preparation for a new school year can be stressful for the parents and their children. So, what can parents do to make the transition smooth for themselves and their children? Especially for the child who is attending a traditional school for the first time or going to a new school? Here are some ideas to get everyone ready for school.

Schedule a visit. Meeting the teacher and walking through the building does a lot to ease the stress of change. If your child’s schedule requires changing classrooms and the use of a locker, take them to school, encourage them to physically walk through their schedule and become familiar with their locker. Your child gains a sense of the familiar and you, when you think of your child during the day, can be calm knowing where your child is. (Make and keep a copy of their schedule.)

Get the paperwork done. Mark this task off your to-do list early. Doing so allows you the time to address anything that may have been overlooked, like a copy of your child’s inoculations. Make and keep copies in case paperwork is misplaced. Keep a folder at home for each of your children with all required school paperwork, class list, phone numbers, class schedule and any other important papers. If you need something, you’ll know where it is. Last minute worries and misplaced paper add to stress. You’re working towards smooth, yes? 40 education central

ARE YOU?

Take your child shopping. Going shopping for school supplies is our annual first step of getting ready for school, part of our tradition for transitioning from summer back to school. In the early part of August, we wade through the aisles with shopping carts and our lists of required school supplies. Each of my four kids has a copy of their list and runs through the aisles, grabbing the items on their list and throwing the supplies into the carts. I check what is in the carts against my master list. I also adjust supplies, to account for the myriad of school projects that will be pop up throughout the school year and the items that may not go the distance over the course of the school year (extra poster board, erasers, folders, plastic rulers, highlighters, dry erase makers).

Checkups! If your insurance allows, consider scheduling checkups in early to mid-summer. Seeing the dentist and doctor earlier, especially when inoculations are required, disassociates them with the start of the school. Middle and high school sports physicals will need to be completed before your child begins practices for their fall sports.

sleeping in and staying up later. Gradually begin moving bedtimes and wake-up times back to school schedules. Changing the schedule early should help you get some added sleep since you aren’t staying up as late either. Help the younger kids say good-bye to the fireflies and flashlight tag and assist your middle or high schooler with a small scavenger hunt or barbecue with friends. The excitement of the new school year, adjustment to class work and studying, and added expectations wears your child out.

Go over expectations. Sit down with your child and go over what you and your child’s school expects of them. Some schools require signed agreements from the student that holds them responsible for their actions, like cheating, turning work in on time, responsibility, and treatment of other students. If these are required by your child’s school, make sure you discuss the agreement and that your child understands what they are signing. If you or your child feels anything needs clarification, get it and keep a copy of the signed agreement.

Organize and mark everything.

veryone loves summer, but the brighter sunshine, increased heat, and all that water activity can introduce risks you might not consider. Here are a few helpful tips from your DuPage Medical Group (DMG) physicians to keep in mind when it comes to maintaining safety while having fun. SHIELDING FROM THE SUN Safety in the sun applies to both children and adults. Sunburn isn’t the only way to harm your skin – sun damage can build up over the years. The damage isn’t just relegated to clear, sunny days either, so don’t be lax about prevention when it’s foggy or cloudy. Children under 6 months should never be exposed to direct sunlight. Keep them under a shade at all times. While outside, we recommend dressing them in a light-colored, lightweight cotton shirt with long sleeves, along with lightweight cotton pants and a protective hat. For areas that may not remain fully covered, you can apply a small amount of broadspectrum sunblock with sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Everyone above the age of 6 months should wear a broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 15 or greater. Broad-spectrum indicates that it will protect you from ultraviolet A and B rays. The higher the SPF, the better the protection from ultraviolet B rays. Rub it in thoroughly, especially around the eyes, and don’t forget these spots:

• Tops of feet • Ears • Scalp • Lips • Eyelids • Edges of clothing 44 family wellness

Be sure to check the date on your sunblock, as it can expire and lose strength. And don’t be stingy with the application! Cover yourself with at least 1 oz. (2 tbsp.) of sunscreen about 20 minutes before you go outside, allowing plenty of absorption time. Reapply every couple of hours, regardless of the SPF, and reapply immediately after swimming, toweling off, or in case of excessive sweating. Even when used properly, sunscreen does not guard you from all skin damage caused by the sun, so be considerate of your time outside and level of exposure. The sun’s rays are at their strongest between 10am and 4pm. Look for clothing with fabric that includes built-in (SPF) or ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). Find a hat with a brim or visor of at least 3 inches to cover your face and preferably your neck. Wear sunglasses with 99 to 100% UV protection. BEAT THE HEAT As temperatures rise outside, so does the chance for overheating. Hydration is key: drink 20 oz. of non-alcoholic beverages for every hour of sun exposure. Electrolyte-rich sports drinks are the best bet for helping to counter salt depletion – a primary cause of heat-related illness. Avoid sugary, caffeine or alcohol drinks, as they can make you lose body fluids more rapidly When exercising, wear light-colored, loosefitting clothing that breathes easily. If you do workout, do so indoors, or keep it to the early morning or later evening. And always listen to cues from your body. Don’t push yourself if you are feeling overheated. Heat exhaustion symptoms include:

• Headache • Weakness • Increased Thirst • Cool, clammy skin • Fainting • Nausea & Vomiting suburban family | subfam.com

Heat stroke symptoms include:

• Severe headache • Seizures • Weakness/Dizziness • Not sweating • Confusion • Body temperature 105° F+ • Loss of consciousness

When experiencing heat exhaustion, move indoors, undress and lie down. If you must remain outside, find shade or cool water for relief. In an instance of heat stroke, seek emergency room care immediately. WATCH THE WATER When it comes to beating the heat, taking a dip is tough to top. But swimming should be taken seriously. Don’t swim solo – using the “buddy system” decreases your chances of injury or drowning. Swimming in designated areas where a lifeguard is on duty only adds to the security. This especially applies to bodies of water where you are unfamiliar with the current or tide strength. Always jump in feet first, particularly in dark or murky water. The depth can vary. and there may be hidden rocks or objects. Diving can lead to severe head or spinal injuries. Again, don’t push yourself. Understand the limits of your endurance and swimming capability. Fatigue can set in quickly, so always remain where you can quickly get to safety if needed. ENJOY YOURSELF Never hesitate to contact your DMG physician with any question, from sunscreen types to heat exhaustion. Mostly importantly, have fun! Summer is a wonderful season for time with friends and family – staying safe just makes it that much more enjoyable. July/August 2016

Back to School, Back to the Doctor

o matter what grade your child is about to enter, N there's the yearly back-to-school checklist of to-dos: Shopping for school supplies Filling out permission forms Scheduling your child's yearly pediatric wellchild visit, eye exam and dental check-up. While it may not seem as urgent, a yearly physical exam by your family's pediatrician is an important part of your child's health care. The back-to-school season is a convenient time for putting the exam on your family's schedule.

Back-to-school check-ups, as they are commonly called, are often the only visit most kids and teenagers have with their pediatrician every year. The annual physical gives the pediatrician a chance to give the child a thorough physical exam and address any emotional, developmental, or social concerns. It is also a

good chance to address important questions, especially with teenagers, including adolescent issues of drinking, smoking, drugs, sexual activity, and depression. Children involved in school athletic programs often receive a sports-specific exam through the school.

If they can’t even see their ABCs, how can they possibly learn them? While schools do offer vision screenings, they are limited in nature and very rarely find any actual issues. So parents should find a trusted optometrist. Your child's back-to-school checklist should also include regular dental examinations to diagnose and treat or prevent dental problems. Your dentist may suggest fluoride treatments or sealants to prevent decay and can diagnose and treat dental problems. Dental pain or disease can lead to difficulty in eating, speaking, playing and learning as well as lost school time.

The first day of school can be an exciting time, but to make sure their first day goes well, parents should get their child’s eyes checked. Eyesight is a crucial part of your child’s success in school, and an eye screening before classes ramp up again can get them started off on the right track.

5 secrets to happier feet this summer After hiding our feet in heavy socks and boots all winter long, we can now rejoice that it is finally sandal season! But are your tootsies a little funky after a winter of neglect? Maybe they’re a bit smelly, or your skin is rough and cracked, or you may even have a case of Athlete’s foot. Podiatrist Dr. Lauren Kishman, Akron General Othopedics (Akron, Ohio), knows the most common foot complaints and lets you in on some secrets to get your feet summer-ready. • Sweaty, smelly feet? Use antiperspirant – yes, on your feet. “Your feet have sweat glands. As your feet sweat, proteins are released which bacteria are able to feed on causing odor,” says Dr. Kishman. “It can be worse in the summer because of moisture and physical activity.” Change out your socks often and try a clear, roll-on antiperspirant on the bottom of your feet - apply after showering and drying your feet. If an over-the-counter antiperspirant doesn’t work, there are prescription-strength

antiperspirants to try – see your podiatrist. • Avoid fungus – wear sandals around the pool. “Fungus is easy to pick up in the summer, especially around moist environments like pools or hot tubs, so make sure to keep your feet covered in those environments,” says Dr. Kishman. If you have Athlete’s foot, over-the-counter antifungal medications are generally successful. Nail fungus, though, is typically more difficult to treat and often will require prescription medication to recover completely. • Don’t leave nail polish on all summer.“The chemicals and dyes in nail polish can discolor or crack nails. People often mistake this for a fungal infection,” says Dr. Kishman. “Don’t leave polish on for extended periods of time – remove after about two weeks and give your toes a break before reapplying.” Look for polishes with fewer chemicals or even try antifungal polishes. If you’re not sure if it is fungus, see a podiatrist. Getting a pedicure? Dr. Kishman cautions to make sure the salon where

you go sterilizes their equipment. • Apply sunscreen all over your feet. “Skin cancer can affect the feet, so if there are any suspicious or dark spots on your feet – on your skin or underneath the nails – see a doctor to get them checked out,” says Dr. Kishman. If you have cracking or dry skin, lotions with urea or ammonium lactate in them can help. • Ditch the flip-flops – wear supportive shoes. “In the summer we often trade supportive foot gear for flip-flop-type sandals. This predisposes the foot to more stress through the arch, heel and ball of the foot, which can lead to stress fractures and heel pain,” says Dr. Kishman. Look for thicker soles and arch support – avoid very thin or very flexible. A good way to check the shoe is to see if you can bend it in half – if you can, look for something sturdier. Also, sandals with more straps tend to be more helpful – you won’t have to grip with your toes as much so there is less stress on your tendons.

What is an Uncontested Divorce? An uncontested divorce is a viable and inexpensive option for spouses of all economic and family status. Offering you and your spouse the chance to end your marriage quietly and with dignity. An uncontested divorce means that the spouses are able to agree on the major issues involved in a divorce, such as child custody; child support; spousal support; division of property; and division of debt. Spouses in agreement must still go to court to obtain the court’s approval. However, an uncontested divorce usually moves quicker through the courts, is less expensive, and minimizes the amount of private information made public. While no divorce is without disagreements, an experienced divorce attorney can assist you in getting the best results. July/August 2016

Experience. Compassion. Legal Resolution. The Family Law Attorneys at Klein, Daday, Aretos & OʼDonoghue, LLC know divorce can be a confusing and stressful time.
